On December 27, 2018, South Vancouver lost a loyal friend, with the passing of historian Ken MacLeod, author of The Story of South Vancouver and John Oliver High School. The 74-year-old retired teacher lived his final years in Courtenay, but his heart remained in the Sunset neighbourhood of his childhood.
He attended MacKenzie Elementary and was an enthusiastic Boy Scout. As a student at John Oliver Secondary (J.O.), he joined every club and team that would have him, and founded the Mountain Dew Boys contingent of the Pep Club. He caught the acting bug in the school’s drama productions. He played football and broke his nose in a game of cricket.
His six years at J.O. (yes, they used to do grade 7 there) coincided with the adolescent pinnacle of the post-war baby boom, when John Oliver was the largest high school in Canada. The school frequently dominated in sports, music and scholastics, and Ken was sad to leave the frenetic place when he graduated in 1962.
He got his BA in education at University of British Columbia, and later an MA from the University of Victoria. Ken taught high school in Chase, Salmon Arm, Langley and Abbotsford. He coached over 60 teams, with an emphasis on his beloved sport of basketball.
In 1973, journalist Barry Broadfoot published Ten Lost Years, based on interviews with Canadians about the Great Depression. The oral history book fascinated Ken and he launched himself into the past. He traced his family roots back to 14th century Scottish king Robert the Bruce. He grabbed a tape recorder and began interviewing West Coast fisherman for a book that, although not completed, has resulted in a treasure trove of memories being donated to the Cumberland Museum and Archives. He immersed himself in Canadian armed forces history and was the military subject adviser to the Encyclopedia of British Columbia (Harbour Publishing, 2000). He guided 29 military and veterans tours to Europe, revisiting the Canadian battlefields, cemeteries, and commemorative sites. When he retired to Courtenay, he produced 19 musical shows, including an annual Remembrance Day review to honour veterans. Ken was a true ally of the  Canadian soldier and one of the first citizens to receive a Veterans Affairs Canada Commendation. He was also awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and made an honorary Seaforth Highlander.
But of all the forays that Ken made back in time, his biggest push was reserved for his old stomping grounds of South Vancouver. In 1999, Ken formed the John Oliver Historical Society with the intention of quickly writing a small book about the school. The historian soon discovered that J.O.’s background was vast and rich, and so intermeshed with the surrounding community that he felt forced to combine the two topics into a massive 800-page tome entitled The Story of South Vancouver and John Oliver High School. The project was a 12-year labour of love. The author filled a room in his home with interview tapes, photos and memorabilia. He travelled all over B.C. to collect memories. A story about kids pole vaulting over creeks on the South Slope led to the story of sprinter Barbara Howard (J.O. senior matric, 1940) becoming the first black female athlete to represent Canada internationally. She competed at the 1938 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Sydney, Australia. That recollection led to memories of the Horticultural Hall, a barn-like structure that served as J.O.’s only gym up until the construction of a proper one in 1940. The rustic hall with its pot-bellied stove, continued as a back-up gym into the 1950s, and Ken chased down the holders of those memories, too.
The research snowballed. It is a miracle that Ken was able to publish the book in time to watch J.O. grad of ‘47 and billionaire Jimmy Pattison play his trumpet accompanied by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robinson on tuba at the school’s centennial celebration in 2012.
Ken’s book is the only comprehensive history of South Vancouver on the shelves at the Vancouver Public Library. It is a fine legacy for an outstanding individual.
Even as Ken battled with lung cancer, he continued to arrange for his work to carry forward. An easy-to-search PDF of his book will soon appear on J.O.’s website. Other J.O. grads will continue his popular alumni e-letters. And Ken’s sister, Edie Kernighan (Grad of ’67) will work with her fellow classmates Alicia Hagerman and Nancy Nagel to help maintain the school’s archive. Their goal is to find a space to display John Oliver and South Van’s history. One possible venue is the school’s Unit Two Annex, an attractive 1926 Class-B heritage structure known as The Barn.
The rural reference is apt, because as Ken explains in his book, Vancouverites used to refer to the South Van crowd as “stump jumpers,” but the jabs stopped abruptly when the “farmers” living way out on Cemetery Road (Fraser Street) built John Oliver, which quickly became an educational powerhouse.
A service for Ken will be held at Courtenay Fellowship Baptist Church on January 12th at 1:00 pm.
In memory of Ken and his legacy to John Oliver Secondary School and South Vancouver, please consider a donation to John Oliver PAC 530 E 41st Ave, Vancouver, BC V5W 1P3 to support a scholarship and the JO Archives.
[UPDATE: Ken’s book The Story of South Vancouver and John Oliver High School is available as a free PDF download from the VSB Archives & Heritage website. Thank you to Derek Grant and his fellow volunteers who have done such a great job preserving the Vancouver school district’s history.]

Labor picks fight with farm piece rates in a move critics say could drive producers to the wall
The federal opposition says farm workers need to be guaranteed a minimum wage if they are paid according to how much produce they pick.
Key points:
Workers paid according to how much fruit they pick are being exploited, say unions
The opposition says workers must be guaranteed a minimum wage
The National Farmers’ Federation says piece rates drive worker productivity
Labor has thrown its support behind a union campaign to amend the horticulture workers award in a move farmers claim could drive them out of business.
Speaking in Sydney today, Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said fruit pickers must be assured of earning the minimum wage of $19.84 per hour.
“What we’re saying is there should be a minimum rate,” he said.
“There’s got to be a minimum rate. You can’t have no bottom.”
Under the award, the piece rate allows workers to be paid according to the amount of fruit they harvest, and must offer the average worker up to 15 per cent more per hour than the minimum wage.
Mr Albanese said it had led to workers being underpaid and exploited.
Unions call for minimum pay guarantee
The Australian Workers’ Union has lodged a submission to the Fair Work Commission seeking to amend the award to ensure a minimum payment for those paid piece rates.
Farmers claim to rely on the piece rate system to boost productivity among workers, but unions say it has led to exploitation of vulnerable workers.
A new study by Unions NSW, released today, claims farm workers are earning as little as $1.25 an hour, despite a widespread labour shortage exacerbated by COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Download the ABC News app for all the latest.
Based on interviews with 100 workers and an audit of 1,000 job advertisements offering farm work, the report said “96 per cent of piece rates advertised would not allow workers to earn the national minimum wage, and in several instances workers would earn less than $1 an hour”.
“No worker receives above the minimum wage if they are on piece rates; in fact, piece rates provide wages as low as $2 to $5 an hour for workers,” Unions NSW secretary Mark Morey said.
“It is hard work. It is back-breaking work. There is no upside to this, we need to scrap piece rates and we need to have a system where there’s a minimum rate of pay for the worker.”
A new union study says some farm workers are earning as little as $1.25 an hour. (
ABC
)
The study, entitled Wage Theft: Shadow Market, reported hourly rates fell to as low as $1.25 for blueberries, $4.10 for peaches, $4.89 for strawberries and $4.90 for grapes.
One backpacker’s story
For Taiwanese backpacker Johnson, working on a Queensland strawberry farm last for a piece rate was “a disaster”.
“I remember the first day, I worked for six hours and I only get $38 — six hours for $38 and I still have to pay my rent; it’s pretty much a disaster for me,” he told the ABC.
“It should be $100 at least, I think, but they didn’t pay me for hourly job, it was how many kilos I pick and then they pay me like 60 cents per kilo, maybe lower.
“I’ve never worked on a farm before so I don’t know if this price is normal so I just do it.”
Get the latest rural news
Johnson, who declined to give his surname out of concern for his job prospects, has left Queensland and now works in Tasmania, where he says he is earning much better wages with a different contractor.
He says there are times when earning the piece rate has worked in his favour.
“It depends, on the condition of the fruit … if there’s a lot of fruit I don’t want to work an hourly job, but if the season just get started or is about to end, then I prefer to work in an hourly job.”
‘Losing piece rates will close farms’
The National Farmers’ Federation [NFF] said any cases of exploitation or underpayment should be reported to the Fair Work Ombudsman.
Ben Rogers, the NFF’s general manager of workplace relations and legal affairs, said farmers were reliant on piece rates to drive productivity and without them some farmers would be forced to close.
“You’ll just be driving a whole bunch of growers and small growers out of business and out of the economy,” he said.
“The reality is that piece rates don’t lead to exploitation.
“Those rogue operators are going to exploit people and they’ll find other ways to do that, but attacking piece rates and denying the sector a key productivity tool is just not the way to go about solving that issue.”
The matter is expected to come before the Fair Work Commission in July.

E for Employment-- Whorehouse sex inspector
As all of us know, Mr O got his Certificate II in Horticulture and is now looking for an adult apprenticeship. January was extremely peaceful on the job front as it always remains in Australia. Today there was an article about a job Mr O didn't see when it was readily available (it has been filled, no pun intended). Coming from a nation where this sort of thing is just not spoken about, it took Mr O a number of minutes to understand why I was so amused at the report. While I am not discussing his certifications for the particular position, I couldn't resist sharing the article as it certainly provides a viewpoint on Australian culture that possibly not lots of overseas individuals would see. Maybe I must have conserved this for H for Humour! It's billed as a bachelor's dream task-- being paid $70k each year to"partake of sexual services"at whorehouses in NSW on behalf of local councils. An advertisement for the job as a "Whorehouse Buster Detective", placed by Lyonswood Investigations and Forensic Group in
Sydney, was published in My Career in late January.Applicants were needed to be single and ideally single, to be ready to have protected sexual intercourse with woman of the streets and to offer sworn evidence in court. http://news.msn.co.nz/worldnews/8411388/australian-firm-seeks-brothel-sex-inspector!.?.!The link takes a little while to open-- it is being reported in New Zealand and I think the site might
be taking a couple of hits today as the link is doing the rounds on Twitter. As someone commented,"A new angle for"How I Met Your Mom"? Maybe, indeed.I liked the"single and ideally single "requirement! Now, I do apologise for there being no picture with this particular glance at Australia, however I make certain you'll agree one proper to the story may not be suitable for the readership!Hopefully I am forgiven for this somewhat risque different article, but I'm still giggling over the series of cultural adventures one can experience in
this country! If you think it is just this part of the world, do visit Piglet in Portugal for a story AND pictures about SEXY toilet tissue. I kid you not!Visit http://myatozchallenge.com!.?.! to discover more countries and short articles on the A-- Z Obstacle.

Diploma Of Hospitality Management and its relevance in modern-day job market
Importance of education has always been in the talking since years now. Like it is rightly said, in order to judge something justly, one must have proper education. It is a fact that without education, it is literally difficult for one to build a spine and work to curb evil from the society, of which education is the only way out. Thus, this has always been a crucial area of concern. However, even if the importance of education remains constant in so many years, the methods of imparting education have definitely changed. Earlier, it used to be all dependent on studies. One used to go and acquire traditional courses that took one years to complete. In that case it is better that nowadays one has options of making a choice from short-termed technical courses like Hospitality management or courses on kitchen management or even horticulture.
Diploma Of Hospitality Management is one of the most popular among the technical courses doing rounds nowadays. This provides the candidates, overall knowledge about what hotels look like and how they work, hence offering the candidates the job roles of hotel managers, hospitality managers or even managers in posh hospitals in the area concerned. Besides, course like Certificate III in Horticulture is another popular choice that is availed by many, especially those who have a thing for plants, their growth and their well-being. Crucial topics like soil management, disease and pest control and also garden designing are discussed here in this course, that makes the candidate confident enough whilefacing the professionals at work. Job roles offered to a horticulture-qualified person might include gardening, landscaping or even turning into a mainstream horticulturalist.
Apart from the above-mentioned courses, one might also be interested in cookery and decides to Study Kitchen Management in Sydney. This is a well-defined course that gives in fora holistic study about the kitchen and its working. Any person who wants to explore one’s passion in and about the kitchen and cooking, this course is surely the lane to take. Working as chefs or hotel managers is now streamlined with such courses.

Suffering the classic high school graduate uncertainty, Victoria Ngu approached her tertiary education by applying for the uni course that would give her the most breadth in job choices later down the track: a Bachelor of Business. Here is a case for hedging your bets! She ended up majoring in marketing and law, and graduated knowing two things for sure: 1) she had zero interest in finance, 2) the diversity of communications and creative campaigns was totally her jam!
While she performed the classic study/retail work juggle during her undergraduate years, Victoria also completed a slew of internships on the side. It’s this variety of experiences that led her first to The Sydney Opera House and then to Bangarra Dance Theatre as her first jobs out of uni. This string of incredible opportunities eventually wound up at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, where she has held the role of digital marketing and media coordinator since 2017.
Victoria’s position is hugely multifaceted, and spans the broad range of fields that fall under the Gardens’ umbrella. From horticulture to education to venue management to events, she is in constant liaison with various different stakeholders at all times. Not to mention keeping the company’s public-facing image pristine!
The most important verb in the get-your-dream-job lexicon is…
Apply! It sounds absurd, but I almost didn’t apply for this job because I assumed I wouldn’t have a chance. My partner convinced me to just go for it and now, looking back, it seems ridiculous that I wouldn’t even try. If I had succumbed to my insecurities, I wouldn’t be where I am today!
I landed this job by…
Putting all my energy into my application. Once I ran out of reasons to not apply, I began to update my resume and write a cover letter. The application involved a series of written tasks for different digital channels and I carefully crafted responses I was happy with. I was genuinely surprised to get the call up for an interview and discovered I would also need to prepare a 10-minute presentation on top of the interview itself.
Work for me in 2020 has been…
Surreal. I’ve been working remotely since March and, while I do enjoy the improved focus that working from home allows, I do miss the Gardens themselves. Ordinarily I am based in the office at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, and work a few days from the Australian Botanic Garden in Mount Annan and the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden in Mount Tomah every few weeks, so working from home full-time has been a huge adjustment.
The work itself also pivoted from selling tickets to public programs and events, to focusing on promoting our at-home gardening series, being a source for inspiring content for our global audience, and a reliable outlet for gorgeous imagery. It’s been quite a mentality shift, which required flexibility and patience to navigate this new and uncertain world.
A typical day for me involves…
Moderating the Gardens’ social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn) is a big part of the job, especially now when we have engagement from all over the world. The three Gardens are public green spaces with millions of visitors every year, so we receive feedback, general questions and a myriad of plant-related questions that our Horticulture team help to answer.
A big part of my day is writing and editing blogs, web copy and social media captions that I schedule for the week ahead. We have so many content producers in Education, Horticulture and Science – it’s a huge number of images, videos and news to translate into engaging digital content. I also produce and analyse reports on the performance of digital channels to inform future campaigns.
The most rewarding part of my job is…
Learning about plants. It’s no exaggeration to say that I’ve learned something new about plants, horticulture or science every day I’ve been in this role. I love learning plant names and traditional uses of plants by the Cadigal people, the traditional owners of the land of the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Some people might not be aware that our Gardens comprise Australia’s oldest living scientific institution, and there is so much to learn about the important work often done behind the scenes by our scientists.
I also love how diverse my role can be. In 2019, I put together the Garden’s first-ever Lunar New Year program to celebrate the year of the Pig. It was fulfilling for me to try my hand at programming and to work on the events side, as well as the marketing and communications side of a campaign, and a special way for me to connect to my Chinese heritage.
On the other hand, the most challenging aspect is…
Competing priorities. Marketing and communications support many teams in our organisation including science, education, horticulture, major events, venue services and more, and between the three Gardens, there are numerous events, projects, and stakeholders to support. My team is always busy and multi-tasking.
Something I thrive off at work is…
Spending time in nature. I go for a walk every day, aiming to explore different pockets of the Garden throughout the week. One spot I return to daily is the Succulent Garden.
A piece of advice/a lesson I’ve found useful is…
Where possible, eat lunch outside. Too often I find myself eating lunch at my desk on busy days. I find that by taking a break from my laptop and going outside, even if it’s a short break, I will have a more productive afternoon.

How Insta-farming has led to blooming business at rural farms
Updated May 04, 2019 12:18:54
Tumblr media
Photo: Michele Stephens plans to plant more sunflowers on her organic farm. (ABC Gold Coast: Cathy Border) They were planted as a way to make people smile, but the sunflowers on one New South Wales farm have become so popular on social media they are attracting tourists from all over the world. Key points:A crop of sunflowers planted at an organic veggie farm at Cudgen, NSW, has been attracting visitors from around the worldOther farmers and rural businesses say that cultivating a social media following has proved a boon for business as it helps connect people to seeing where their food comes fromSome businesses are devoting more resources and consideration to how they cultivate their social media followings in order to attract more visitors Michele Stephens, who runs an organic veggie farm at Cudgen in Northern NSW, said she planted a field of sunflowers after speaking to her seedling supplier. "He had a lovely crop of sunflowers and I asked why he put them in and he said, 'to make people happy'," she said. "We already had people walking around the farm and enjoying the farm, so I thought we'd give them a field of sunflowers." Ms Stephens said it only took one photo by her son that was posted on Instagram, for the flowers to become a social media hit. She has since had tourists from Japan, China and Brazil make the trip out to her property, but it is tourists from Singapore that have proven particularly keen, often calling to plan their visit.

(ABC Gold Coast: Cathy Border) "They usually say 'We are coming over from Singapore, landing on the Gold Coast, how do we get to your place?'" she said. External Link:Sunflower instagram While tourists have created problems by trespassing through some Queensland sunflower farms, where they have left rubbish and damaged plants, at Cudgen Ms Stephen said they have helped her business. She said the sunflower tourism helps the cafe she has opened on the site. "That's a really big bonus for us with all the visitors we are having and we have ceremonies for weddings and photography for weddings here," she said. Ms Stephens allows visitors to take a sunflower home and also uses the flowers as a cover crop to add nutrition to her farm's soil. Her plans for the future of her farm include "sunflowers and more sunflowers". And she is not the only agricultural business to use Instagram to attract visitors to her property. Another part of the business In the Southern Highlands of NSW, Farm Club Australia runs accommodation and a cafe on its 1,300-hectare property. External Link:Farm instagram While that business does not have sunflowers, it often gets hundreds of likes on its Instagram pictures of food, chooks, horses and fields. Manager Liberty Weller said customers had visited her business from Sydney and Canberra, after seeing pictures on Instagram and Facebook. "I know if I wanted to go somewhere, to a restaurant, I would look up their Instagram rather than their website," she said. "So having a really good Instagram is so important because everyone, pretty much everyone, is on it." But she said farming businesses do need to put time and effort into social media for it to work well. "We find if there are too many people on the Instagram account the consistency of photos is off," she said. "We have had it before where everyone is posting photos but because everyone has a different idea of what they want the photos to look like it didn't look aesthetically pleasing." Ms Weller said they now try to keep the themes and filters of photos consistent. The business manager said another challenge is remembering to take photos, while also running a busy business. It requires hard work Instagram influencer Paris Jacobson has turned her love of social media into a job. External Link:Paris Jacobson Instagram The Gold Coast resident has nearly 130,000 followers. She said Instagram can be a powerful tool to attract visitors to travel destinations. "You see lots of things on Instagram and you go 'Oh that looks trendy, that looks cool, I want to get a photo there too," Ms Jacobson said. She often has people asking her questions on Instagram about the places in her photos. "I get so many messages all the time saying 'Where is this, or where is that? I really want to go there and that looked really good'," Ms Jacobsen said. Connecting with food and fibre The Australian Farmers' Federation said the farming lifestyle across Australia lends itself to great imagery. But general manager Laureta Wallace said more importantly, social media is a great way for farmers to connect with people from across the country and for city residents to get a glimpse of rural life. "Research by the National Farmers Federation has confirmed that people feel increasingly disconnected with how their food and fibre is grown," she said. "Seeing a cotton field or a dairy in action on their Instagram feed, is a great way for Australians to better understand how their T-shirt came to be or where the milk in their coffee originated."
