Emily: "I basically want to- if we can't do it on campus, I don't have to do it on campus. I can do it around the town. I basically want to disguise myself as various eligible high schoolers and probe about Ruben's dating past."

Brennan: "Oh-hooo! Go ahead and gimme a Mystery roll. This is your third roll, so the DC's 15, but successes past a certain point will get you even more. You can give me Perception, Investigation, or Insight."

Emily: "All right, I think the goal is that I was gonna try and use my Actor feat, but okay, I'll do that."

Brennan: "I'll let you use the Actor feat to get advantage, but not to use your Performance skill. Cool?"

Emily: "Okay." *rolls dice* *scoffs*

Brennan: "You could take a stress." (Why is he so evil?! 😭✋)

Emily: "I'll take a stress. I'm gonna take a stress."

Lou: "You can take a stress."

Emily: "I want this."

Ally: "Ah, a stress pusher."

Brennan: "That definitely passes. You ask about Ruben's-"

Emily: "And like, I wanna go through all of his lyrics and basically get a profile of what he might be attracted to."

Brennan: "You talk to a student. There's a Triton student at Aguefort whose name is Lashra. And you see she says like,"

Lashra: "Oh, Ruben's dated a lot of people. Like, he's in everyone's DMs. He's, like, constantly talking. I haven't heard anything that's, like, that gross beyond, like, what you would expect for someone who, like, got famous quickly."

Fig: "Yeah, no, I meant more like, does he have a type?"

Lashra: "I would say anyone who thinks he's cool, straight up. I haven't seen like a strong type. Oh! He talked a lot about this girl at the beginning of the year, Wanda."

Fig: "Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I heard she's super hot and mysterious."

Ally: "Wanda Childa?!"

Lashra: "Yeah. Oh! He asked me if I knew if Wanda was gonna be at Frosty Fair."

Fig: "Okay. That's crazy. I'm so jealous of Wanda."

Lashra: "Yeah, he was like, 'I hope she's there.' 'Cause he's- I dunno if you heard, he's headlining."

Fig: "Is he?"

Lashra: "Yeah, he's headlining at Frosty Fair."

Fig: "Interesting."

Lashra: "Mm-hmm."

Fig: "Cool"

Emily: "So I wanna use that information to...I took the Dream spell and I wanna, just every night, give him dreams of Wanda."

Emily: "Just dreams of Wanda saying how good he is. Dreams of like-"

Ally: "You're invading a teenage boy's dreams. Inserting your alter-ego."

Emily: "My alter-ego."

Brennan: "My alter-ego."

Ally: "Alter-emo!"

Emily: "I think it's like- who did 'Tree of Life?' Like, Terrence Malick, kind of flashbacky. Her in fields."

Brennan: "Yeah."

Emily: "Her showing him her poetry tattoos, her putting hair behind her ear. It's just, like, everything is montages of that."

Brennan: "So you're incepting Ruben with Wanda Childa."

Emily: "Like a buildup of this crush on Wanda Childa."

Brennan: "Incredible. You successfully do that."

Siobhan: "Why is she always under a white sheet?"

Emily: "It's always like, yeah. It's always over her shoulder, like that Instagram travel."

(Siobhan and Ally laughing)

Lou: "Your mouth is talking, but it's just the sound of waves crashing."

Zac: "She's on the end of a pier?"

Emily: "Yeah. It moves in and out."

Siobhan: "Are there piers? Aren't we in a landlocked city?"

Emily: "Just like, her in the passenger seat doing this in the window."

Ally: "omg."

Brennan: "Incredible. Like a week after that, a single hits the thing of 'Not All Who Wanda Are Lost.'"

God there's so many. he's really out here constantly Pulling Shit.

Beverly Toegold IV's deal with Akarot to save Cirilla. Holy shit. So goddamn rude. Beautifully built. Iconic betrayal. I'm adding in, of course, "A Beastiary of Devils and Archdevils by the Paladin Beverly Toegold I" and the fucking Lay on Hands that was stored inside it. Because god what a series of moments. Bev (our Bev) almost became evil in the endgame of Campaign 1 because of this deal. So uncalled for. Absolutely beautiful storytelling.

Sending Cooter off to kill Maw Maw. Holy shit did that almost work. And holy shit did that almost kill Cooter. The description of that moment, with Glen not understanding why his father would work against the orders when he knew it would kill him? Haunts me. Also one of the 100000 posts on Crown of Dreams day said something to the effect of "If i were emily or caldwell and murph said cooter was sent to kill maw maw to my face i would have murdered glen then and there" which is so real and true. Glad they both ended up okay but that was truly evil.

Thiala's trap for Bev, but more specifically the dwarf mage bringing just Erlin and Bev out of Irondeep and to Smuggler's Bounty and leaving Mavrus behind. Just because Mavrus is then with 3 people he does not know, all of whom think he is a 26 year old man trying to date a 16 year old. (if you haven't listened to naddpod - he very much isn't. the 16 year olds just get jealous and he's too iconically idiotic to not stick his foot in it).

The corrupted ritual with Cerenysus, Heradecia, and the Third Mates. Killing the autumn fairy. Showing Irina the moment Fia asked if one person was worth all the pain. Hank reliving all the shit with him and his original promise. Obviously so necessary. But truly so uncalled for.

Balnor's backstory. That motherfucker was a card. Brian "Murph" Murphy then goes and gives him a devastating backstory? Where he's the key to the Boobs having a chance of killing Thiala? Where his family got murdered while he was out of town? The man could have stayed a card, Brian!

honorable mention: mentioning on a short rest that his first idea for bringing back Hardwon was to have killed Bev and Moonshine. that didn't actually happen but it filled me with such a white-hot fury that it belongs on this list in some capacity.

I promised a post elaborating on the ordering of the one-on-ones, and I’m here to deliver! Be prepared for some VERY passionate structural and functional analysis.

So the order was Lou/Pinocchio -> Zac/Pib -> Siobhan/Rosamund -> Emily/Ylfa -> Murph/Gerard -> Ally/Timothy and here’s why this is brilliant and Brennan was very smart in picking this order:

First, Pinocchio is an EXCELLENT place to begin. PERFECT for establishing tone and ambiance and stakes for the multiverse/body jumping that is going to be repeating across the other characters WITHOUT too much lore-dumping upfront specifically because the Stepmother is so deliberately withholding and obfuscating. We get all the VIBES of what’s going on without getting much detail about the mechanics or rules of this crossing.

We follow that up with Pib. Also an inspired choice. We get a much needed reprieve from, y’know, all the child abuse in Pinocchio’s segment, and we learn a bit more about how this is all working. Specifically, not only the notion that the same characters appear across stories (which was mentioned in Pinocchio’s, with the horrifying detail that that Pinocchio had to die for this Pinocchio to enter that world) but that the same archetypes can transcend individual characters and stories entirely. This is brilliant to reinforce so soon after we see the Stepmother again because (as we’ve suspected since episode 2 at least with the mirror) she is the only entity of that type that we’ve encountered so far.

Also one of my favorite books as a really young child was called ‘Cat and Bear’ and it was about a cat named Cat who was a little stinker, so idk this segment was weirdly nostalgic and warm and fuzzy

Next, ROSAMUND. CINDERELLA. HOT WOMEN. What else is there to say? Well, we’re back to the plot that the Stepmother was alluding to but not stating outright. We learn more about the mechanics and rules of this world, and in addition to confirming how the crossings work, we get the pivotal piece of information that these other stories are (a) not infinite and (b) getting progressively worse as the better stories are either exhausted or die off.

Cinderella is also key as, three one-on-ones in, we are getting our most reliable narrator to date. She gives Rosamund a clear goal, something to drive the plot forward that’s less cryptic than the book.

And on a beautiful fucking nat 20, Rosamund gains an incredible awareness of her past lives and other stories that supercharged her character arc. I wonder if it is for that awareness that Rosamund (and Ylfa) didn’t get new character portraits when they crossed over: that they are able to retain more of a fundamental essence of self (Rosamund because of the nat 20, Ylfa because she succeeded on the CHAR save).

Coming off of Rosamund’s almost empowering note, the affective roller coaster continues with Ylfa, in which Emily Axford breaks my heart for like thirty minutes straight and I thank her for doing so. We get more of a glimpse of the rules and forces at work in this world, the Wolf continues to be my absolute favorite metaphysical NPC in Dimension 20 history.

Again, each session dovetails beautifully with and builds off of the one-on-one before it to show us new aspects of how this masterwork of a world functions, all while varying tone and affect in a way that isn’t jarring but keeps interest throughout the 2+ hours. I can’t gush enough about how much I admire all of the intrepid heroes and their role-playing skills.

And it was Murph’s segment that made me want to make this post in the first place. Obviously the intrepid heroes did not know what was going on in everyone else’s sessions, but the timing of Gerard as comedic relief is SO perfect. Such an excellent follow-up to Ylfa, again another point of reprieve as Murph commits to Gerard just not fucking getting the concept that we as an audience have had presented to us now for four different characters.

And again, the presence of the fairy brings us back to the PlotTM. We’re getting a sense not for the metaphysical bigger picture but the factions that are at war in this world and the consequences that their fight is having for everyone else. We also get a delicious seed of interparty ~drama~ as Rosamund and Gerard (and Pinocchio) are being courted by different sides in this tale-spanning battle. I NEED to see how much they all tell each other when they finally meet back up again...

Finally, we end with Timothy because, like, how could we possibly end anywhere else than with the storyteller? The book is one of the keys to understanding this world and takes on additional symbolic weight as the characters are passing through to another story, a different, darker book.

But there’s still hope. Things are going to be harder this time around, but there’s still a chance, in another once upon a time.

Just... I commend all of them so much, Brennan for laying the tracks for the emotional, narrative, and lore beats of the episode and the intrepid heroes for picking up on them and responding to and expanding them like the endlessly talented improvisors they are.
