Fluff!

Though the sun was well on it’s way to disappearing for the night, the fire cast just enough light to see by, along with it’s dancing shadows. There were a million new things here she could draw. Greys, she probably should’ve been doing so every night to clear her head. Even her favorite subjects--Nycks, Bellas, and Calla--appeared different out here.

She smiled as she pulled out her notebook. Opening to the first blank page, she practiced with a nearby leaf. The familiar weight of the pen, motion of the lines, stain on her fingers...it was easy to get lost for a little bit. Let her mind go blank.

Glancing back up, Nycks appeared to have fallen asleep. A miracle really. But then, the days hadn’t been too kind to him either.

She had just readjusted to begin on him, when she checked on Ayre.

They sat on the other side of the fire, staring down at their hand. No, at their compass? But it was opened?

A locket.

The scarf had slipped--or maybe been pulled down--revealing a soft smile. It almost seemed out of place, given the way they’d fought, and the scars. But it was also so genuine and soft and...loving that it also seemed right.

She began to sketch.

Whatever--or well, maybe whoever--they must love quite a lot. After all, they spent quite a lot of time just...staring. Something from home? That they missed while being here? The person they exchanged so many letters with?

She was attempting to correct this one detail that refused to appear right no matter what she did, when someone cleared their throat. 

More specifically Ayre. Who was now starring up at her and had moved in the last few moments.

Maybe she shouldn’t have intruded on such a private moment?

“I’m so sorry, I just..well I saw you and you seemed so peaceful and...I’m sorry.”

“May I see it?” They didn’t seem mad, almost, smiling?

With a guilty smile, she handed them the notebook. It wasn’t finished by any means, and she didn’t have much practice with Fae features, which is what she had been struggling with, and honestly she still probably shouldn’t have been-

“You are quite talented you know.”

“I, uh, well, thank you?” Did they actually just laugh as they sat next to her?

Opening the locket again, it revealed a painting of another Fae. “Her name is Cailyna, and she’s my wife.”

An Hourglass Character Introduction

Under a the starlit sky, they’ve made a small camp for themselves so they and their horse can rest. Their black clothes cover most of the scars maring their pale skin and allow them to more easily blend into the surrounding darkness. But their pink eyes still seem to glow in the dimming fire’s light as they braid their silver hair. Pointed ears sag slightly as they examine the picture in their locket...

Hourglass: Book 1

(Re)Introduction to the currently unnamed first book in my Hourglass series!

Summary:

Kameryn “Ryn” Wiles and her best friend, Nycks, are preparing to complete their studies in the White Spire and be named full Casters by the Council at the end of the month. But when a chance encounter seems to link Ryn to a dragon and its attack on the nearby town, the two are tasked with hunting down the creature and banishing it from Faedaal. Aided by the only person who has ever fought and survived a dragon, the fate of Korryn now rests on their shoulders. But not everything is as they were told, and the question remains: who summoned the beast? And more importantly, why?

Excerpts:

Golden light reflected off the snow as her cast warmed her. Greys, she hated the cold, could Endyear hurry up and well, end? A blur of the same light began to take shape in the tracks below her glowing hand, creating a golden rabbit. It sat on its haunches for a moment, sniffing the air, before its ears twitched and a wave of anxiety hit her. There were no other tracks around, at least, not this far out into the meadow.

The meadow was peaceful at night. Stretching endlessly into the dark haze beyond, no matter how far she walked. But how had she gotten here?

She picked one of the wildflowers and played with its stem and she continued on. Shouldn’t she be at the forest by now?

“Caster...”

There was no one there when she turned towards the voice, only the empty trees. Something bad had happened here from the looks of the branches. Something had been attacked. She shouldn’t be here. But why? Why couldn’t she remember what happened?

“You had another nightmare.”

Though it wasn’t meant to, the statement made her freeze. “I can’t just want to see you?” She didn’t turn around. She didn’t need to in order to know the look he was giving her. “Yes.”

“Falling?”

“Among other things.”

The room dimmed as he extinguished the candles, before sitting on the bed with her and getting the one on the windowsill. He had a very serious expression as she turned to face him. “Ryn?”

“Yes?”

“Your bear is snoring.”

She couldn’t.

She wouldn’t.

With the last bit of strength, she let out the burst of energy she had in the lessonroom.

Nycks froze.

She collapsed.

----

“You insolent child!”

“You consider me a child? And still, you sent me instead of fighting your own war. Well, that proved to be your mistake, didn’t it?”

“A setback,” he said through gritted teeth.

She tilted her head and raised an eyebrow, “You think I’m done?”

In theory the First Draft since I haven’t finished a draft, but I’ve rewritten and written so much that who knows?

Hourglass

Book One Introduction:

Kameryn has trained as a time caster her entire life, progressing quickly through the levels of the Korryn Spire with aspirations of joining the elite ranks of its council alongside her best friend Nycks. But when a dragon appears and threatens both the Spire and the neighboring peoples, she becomes chosen by it, making her the only one who can bind and stop the beast before it’s too late for the people and for magic. But the questions remain: who summoned it? And why does it want Kameryn?

Hullo and happy MAGM: For whichever OC: Which actor should play you and why?

Happy MGM and thanks for the ask! (This requires me to know actors, oof, so I’m going to keep this short) Modern Hourglass AU

Ryn:

In a story about my life? Well, I honestly see it more in an animated format, you know? Cooler actions and aesthetics. So that would mean a voice actor, so maybe Laura Bailey?

Nycks:

He doesn’t look exactly like me, but definitely Eddie Redmayne. His characters have a similar personality and I suppose I connect to them?

Ayre:

Why would someone else portray me? If it is a story me, should I not be the one to do it? Why are you two rolling your eyes?

Hourglass Party:

Ryn:

I just love summer! The warmth, the colors, the freedom that comes with it, there’s just too much not to love! Well, okay, the overwhelming heat, later on, could be better.

Nycks:

Summer’s great I suppose, but as for what I like the best? The peace it brings. Don’t get me wrong, I love all my friends, but the quiet in the Spire when everyone else is gone is very nice. It would be even better with less sweat though.

Ayre:

I am personally not partial to any season, though that is not to say that I do not enjoy the ability to walk in nice weather with Cailyna, but I could do without any storms that happen during the time.

The Grey Cast:

Erra:

It is a very beautiful time, but I cannot say that I particularly enjoy the amount of layers I still have to wear in the blistering heat.

Selena shrugs, but says nothing, looking bored.

Vel smiles:

Summer in the Courts is beautiful, the way the light shines around the crystals. And then outside there are all the flowers that bring the bees and Hexies, and personally, it is the most magical thing I see every year. Is that ridiculous when there is actually magic?

So out of the Hourglass cast, Ayre is the mom-est, especially towards Kameryn and Nycks, or anyone they meet that equates to a child with a sword in their eyes. As for sleepiest and laziest...I think Lila, a side-character, is the sleepiest, but that’s because she overworks herself, and Calla, Nycks’s familiar, is probably the laziest!

Amazingly, knife does not appear in any of my stuff for Hourglass, at least, not yet, which is kind of strange

15: Do you know your characters' MBTI personalities?

Well, let's try this. I think Kameryn would be ENFP, Nycks would be ISFP, Ayre would be ENTP?

Of your favorites pairing for your characters, what got them together? What could be the thing that tears them apart?

So Hourglass doesn’t have any main, romantic pairings, at least not until the second book with Ayre’s family. Which might make Ayre and their wife my favorites that way, and they got together because of their shared commitments to the Court and a lot of soft moments I haven’t written yet as well as adopting every person doing something remotely dangerous w/o supervision, but, they could be torn apart by their lives taking different paths and slowly losing the things they once had in common

As for non-romantic pairings? I really love Kameryn and Nycks friendship, which was formed off a mutual love for adventure and curiosity and troublemaking, as well as their natural skills always pairing them up. But secrets and lies might be their friendships ultimate downfall, as they are supposed to be the person the other trusts most, but finding out that the other didn’t trust them, or worse betrayed them, would hurt. Of course, that will never happen, right?
