Eliwood/Lyn is just as bad for Lyn as her other noble option. The point of her abdicating Caelin in base ending, and returning to the plains to escape stifling court life is defeated by being with another noble. Not only is it sexist as a relationship reinforced by "Lyn changed her core ideals for ~love~" but its not a good romantic support simply because the interaction between them was pleasant, so saying its better in comparison is a stretch. Being in the base game doesn't make it okay yknow

this is baffling to me on so many levels, especially the last sentence... I know that? hence i’m critical of heclyn? and so many other things about the game?

You say pleasant interactions don’t make it a good romance in and of itself and I agree--but they’re absolutely a prerequisite for one. By this standard alone Eliwood and Lyn is leagues better than what you call her “other noble option.” They actually treat each other with mutual respect and don’t act like characters out of a tropey het rom-com. Hell, just take a peek at the sheer difference conveyed through their CG arts.

In Hector and Lyn’s, Lyn is visibly uncomfortable and startled. Hector’s put her in a degrading and embarrassing position in an almost possessive way. Respect for Lyn clearly isn’t present here.

In Eliwood and Lyn’s, they’re standing with each other on equal terms. Lyn is visibly happy, and Eliwood is looking at her in clear adoration. You don’t have to like the ship (I still prefer Lyn and Florina, as I said), but you can’t pretend that Lyn isn’t treated with more respect here, or that Eliwood treats her with much more respect in general.

And in regards to Lyn’s arc....I’d argue it’s more complicated than you make it out to be. Yes, the idea of a woman derailing her desires for the sake of a man is a common sexist trope. But Lyn is a complicated character with complicated motives, priorities and desires, and notably she grows differently depending on who she achieves an A Support with. She feels a tug between her roots in Sacae and her feeling of responsibility to her grandfather and Caelin. Most clearly in her Florina support, her yearning for Sacae wins out, and in every paired ending she has except with Eliwood and Hector she abdicates once her grandfather dies. Who she falls in love with has a great effect on where her priorities eventually land. Perhaps you can see her falling in love with Eliwood as the most decisive or final factor in her ultimate decision, but it’s not the only one, because it was always a complex decision for her. A woman isn’t less strong because she makes a tough decision you personally don’t find acceptable or to be approved of.

I’d also briefly point out that Eliwood and Lyn’s ending mentions an uproar at their marriage. Lyn isn’t meekly acquiescing to court life--Even marrying Eliwood is its own form of defiance. She does what she wants, not caring for the wishes of these nobles who disrespect her and think less of her because of her blood. She’s sticking it to them, and carving out her own place of power and respect within a system that doesn’t respect her is a valid form of strength as well.

Additionally, I’d complicate the idea that Lyn’s decision to abdicate is one free of sexist connotations. It makes perfect sense within her individual character arc, yes. But it becomes a bit more troublesome when you look at how FE treats its female rulers at large. Most either end up dead to advance a male relative’s character arc, or they explicitly express a lack of desire to rule and give it up. Sheena gives the crumbling Gra to Marth, Eirika, despite her better suited disposition to rule, allows Ephraim to become king, Camilla gives up the Nohrian throne to her younger brother Leo, Hinoka accepts the role of Queen with extreme hesitance and explicitly states she’d always assumed her older brother Ryoma or younger brother Takumi would be the one to take up the throne. The individual examples mostly make sense in terms of their characters, but taken as a trend there seems to be a clear message. Female claim to rule is often fleeting and undesired. There are notable exceptions to this trend, such as Guinevere and Elincia, of course. Though even in both of those cases they had to be installed on the throne by the heroics of a male lord, and were seemingly the last alternative in the bloodline. At least Lyn won her own throne, which few other FE women get the chance to do.

tl;dr you don’t have to like the ship or something but it’s more complicated than you make it out to be. also ship wars are some of the worst things fandom has ever created it’s so tiring and pointless

honest to god i hate drawing hair in general but, long hair is at least manageable because its in larger chunks and/or tied back. that makes painting it as individual strands SO much harder so its!! hm!!
