“Enough Pieces of Crazy to Go Around” by Melanie Mills
A Book Review
Tumblr media
“Enough Pieces of Crazy” is a first-person, autobiographical recount of Mental Health practices in the late 1900s, surrounding the specific complex Mental Health disorders of Depression, Anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) in Ontario, Canada.
This Autobiography is a real inside look on how complex mental health issues were treated between 1970 and 2007 in Canada. Between several gruelling hospitalizations, long therapy sessions with multiple specialists, and struggling as a Mother to 3 children while still married to her awful husband, Mills instantly comes off as someone incredibly brave and resilient, even though she describes herself often as quite the opposite.
Mills gives an insight, as well, to DID, a rare trauma-based disorder that affects less than 2% of the global population - and something that I also have a diagnosis of. Reading the recounts of Mills’ innerworld, her “parts” and “voices”, and how she desperately feels the need to appear normal, as someone who also has and understands this disorder, is difficult to read. She recounts her trauma, and how her parts would “step into the spotlight”, taking over where she couldn’t. Whether it be for anger, money, art, religion, or simple memory holding, her alters would be there to take over, leaving her “in the darkness” with only Sal to fill her in on what had happened when she wasn’t there. She describes her innerworld, how her alters look, and how she desperately wanted Mel to stop hurting their shared body.
Unfortunately for Mills, the lack of understanding and support for these complex mental disorders is the antagonist of her life, with Doctors constantly telling her that pain was all psychosomatic even when it wasn’t, and brushing her off from one specialist to the next. She was put into institution to institution, all equally as useless, and “failing” each one, as she put it. It really is an honest account of what mental health care was like during the 70s, 80s, and 90s. She describes this time as “mind-numbing” and the professionals giving off the opinion that people are “not strong enough to deal with life’s difficulties” . It wasn’t until the 00s that she met Dr. Chen, and finally started the right healing process.
While this is an actual insight into mental health care during these times, as an alter in a DID system it appears to me that this recount of the disorder is harmful to the other people that all suffer from it. I don’t think that Mills was inaccurate in her recount with this Disorder, as this book is her autobiography, and her recollection of events, but I do think it is on the extreme end of the DID spectrum, as she constantly called herself and described herself as “crazy”, and the extremes in which her system and herself go is not the reality for many DID systems.
As well as this, the way in which Mills writes is very scattered. While the outlined order of the book is kept the same, the paragraphs therein jump from thought to thought, going down a tangent stream of muddled stories that take a while to end, and for the main point to return. It’s very hard to follow Mills’ train of thought, and you need to re-read certain chapters twice or three times before you can see where she’s going or how it relates.
And finally, this book should’ve come with a strong Trigger Warning, as she describes in gruesome detail her childhood, teenagehood, and adulthood abuse, eating disorders, and other triggering topics. To someone who was unaware of what this book would eventually end up entailing, it was certainly something that I needed to take regular breaks from before being able to continue. It’s imperative that if you are writing about something that is quite obviously triggering, that your book come with some sort of warning beforehand, as to the unknowing eye you wouldn’t assume that these details would pop up, nor would you expect it to not only be incredibly down-to-the-letter detailed, but a frequent flyer in multiple chapters.
Overall, I think it’s safe to say that Mills is an inspiration in all that she has overcome in her life, and how she has tackled and survived every obstacle that came her way. It’s not often you see someone talking so openly and vulnerably about complex mental health, even in 2022, and it’s nice to see how much has changed in the mental health field between 1970 and 2022.
However, I do think this book could be harmful for a number of reasons. The most important ones, though, being the intense triggers that come with this book that we are not made aware of beforehand, as well as noting that this recount of DID is on the extreme end of the spectrum, and while Mills has the right to identify and describe herself as “crazy”, not every DID system is that extreme or would be able to relate to that label.

As an obnoxious artsy computer science academic, I can't stand a lot of sci-fi lmao. Most ppl tho don't care even if they're told it's completely wrong. I was wondering if you have any arguments for well scienced fiction other than mine, which is that it offends me, specifically
unfortunately i'm PRETTY MUCH LIKE THIS TOO. i really like biology so sometimes when scifi gets it drastically wrong i'm like. nooo not my baby......!
but the things that annoy me on like, the level where i think there's potential societal harm:
the way scientists are depicted in fiction is often just, like. actively anti-science, or otherwise make scientists unsympathetic in a way that makes people see them as like.... well, underrepresented demographics are more likely to go into STEM fields when they've experienced stories about scientists like them (ie, "humanizing" stories where people learn scientists are just people with a job, esp stories about scientists who are marginalized themselves in some way-- scientists of color, women, disabled scientists, first gen, etc), PLUS people are more likely to engage in good faith with science communication if they think they're just other people with jobs
popular media that misrepresents aspects of science often fuels popular misunderstandings that can lead to huge negative effects, i.e., Jaws depicted wildly unrealistic shark attacks and led to real human affects on sharks (no i don't really remember the specifics bc it's late and i've had two glasses of wine). or you get stuff like people WILDLY misunderstanding wolf social structures and then getting weird AF about it.... or misunderstandings of how gene editing or mutation works from the overwhelming scifi tropes that are just Wild In A Wrong Way
introducing biological determinism as an excuse for unacceptable behavior. this is like people who defend men harassing women as, like, their biological imperative to spread their seed, or people listing scientific "facts" as a reason for discrimination ("facts" in quotes because they're basically all bullshit or a misunderstanding)
sometimes popular depictions of how things work causes people to make dangerous IRL decisions. i'm specifically thinking of medical emergencies, but also sometimes tropes related to various types of natural disasters or characters doing funky physical things that would kill you IRL.
this isn't related to any ethical questions but like. i just think it brings an extra layer of cool when fictional is well-scienced???
oh!!! actually i REALLY HATE tropes that revolve around the way science is being conducting on screen as like. 100% deterministic, like, "we did the science and we are 120% sure how this DNA sequence translates into phenotype, and any dissent is proven to just be another person being a worse scientist." science is an ongoing moving target and people disagree constantly and basically no discoveries are the work of a single genius, and i'm just bored with fiction depicting it this way and making ppl outside of STEM fields think science works like this. see point one
obviously i don't think individual works need to be 100% scientifically accurate, especially if it's just one writer or a small team, and it's fun to have wild and impossible things in fiction, but certain trends across media particularly bug me. the major ones are 1) tropes re: medical treatments being misrepresented in ways that could get someone killed if copied IRL, and 2) people being completely uncritical of scifi tropes/motifs that are like two steps away from eugenics.
i don't think it's the responsibility of an individual creator to educate or explain all the Bad And Inaccurate things in their writing, ESPECIALLY if it's aimed at adults who should have their own education & critical thinking. but it's just like..... some patterns/trends and the way they interact with the overall zeitgeist are really frustrating

Finance Essay or dissertation Example
Finance Essay or dissertation Example Plaything World, Inc. Introduction Often the lives of youngsters can never get happier while not toys. With this thought, toy suppliers all over the world conceptualized the development of more sophisticated and different assortment of playthings. In 1989, the origin with Toy Entire world, Inc. has been traced throughout Miami, California as one of the top rated wholesalers involving toys, get together supplies, as well as household merchandise. (Toy World Incorporated, parecido. 1) Since playthings are mostly acquired only throughout special occasions; supplied as merchandise during birthdays and on The holiday season, the production was initially perceived as strengthened when appointed seasonally. Some shift from seasonal to help level production of playthings will change often the seasonal circuit of Gadget Worlds working capital needs plus necessitate unique bank credit rating arrangements. (Carl Kester 1) Regarding this, this homework is published to analyze Gadget World, Inc. ‘s offer for a point production and working capital management. Further, your determination connected with what the corporation is now in terms of the abovementioned finance components might possibly be proffered. Seasonal Generation versus Grade Production Seasonal making utilized man and appliance, as well as other means of the corporation in conjunction with the a higher level seasonal income. For products, the level of manufacturing is in its peak period in Christmas year or so. For the rest of the majority, there is minimal production together with machinery in addition to labor stand up still. Machineries were usually idle approximately seven . 5 months through lean intervals and can be subjected to quite heavy use about peak levels. This type of generation have the pursuing effects: (1) recruitment concerns and exercising during maximum levels; (2) tigeressay.com overtime do the job reduces profit margins; (3) regular set-up changes in machinery timetable creates confusion and inefficiencies as workers had to relearn operating techniques; and (4) increased susceptibility to encounter issues in the provide for supplies to be purchased to meet increased production through peak values. Levels productions will eliminate overtime, however, premiums; would definitely stabilize construction runs together with schedules; and also orderly production would tantamount to toil savings through the elimination of inefficiencies and even wastage, and others. However , the sort of production would probably increase memory space and working with costs. Working Capital Operations As per Viscione (1977, 6), ‘the total for current are often referred to as the functional capital on the firm and then the difference among current resources and existing liabilities is termed as net doing the job capital’. From this point of view, working capital direction simply supervises the planning, coordinating, directing and controlling about working capital. Using the seasons production kind, Toy Entire world Inc. would need to build up working capital prior to the busier production. Typically the firm would have to consider other choices for finances to fund inventory build (such because bank loans). Further, the degree of production really depends on a detailed sales outlook. Any essential deviation with projected sales would lead to an increased standard of production that can mean unsold inventories; therefor creating issues in bank repayments (when loans happen to be contracted). Analysis The offered level construction would actually increase territories for success. However , you will discover trade offs in terms of liquidity and elevated risks meant for unsold catalogues if sales forecasts are inaccurate. Quality production increases financing specifications and the possibility for unpaid business financing loans. In this regard, Model World, Inc. would be come across more threats with point production than with seasonal development. Realization While using increased dangers associated with degree production, Model World, Inc. is in a far more precarious problem than having a seasonal construction. The dependence on profits forecasts could be disastrous specifically in times of extreme changes in the surroundings. The toy vehicle industry creates several terrors from reduced and numerous dating services which could straight away copy created toys to get relatively more compact cheaper rates. In this regard, it will be a strategical decision intended for Toy Universe, Inc. to use a output type which incorporates equally seasonal together with level construction to minimize often the weakness for level generation but enrich its rewards. By building a powerful image regarding debt installment and interacting with financial demands to fund production levels, Toy World, Inc. would ultimately achieve a fine credit rating. At present, Squeaky toy World, Inc. diversified in other supplements that are not automatically seasonal around nature, including party products, ceramics, home items, matches, sporting goods, together with baby equipment. By providing other supplements, the flow line is included in a more amount production along with sales and profits staying generated equally throughout the year.
