So I binged the entirety of How To Build a Sex Room last night and this one scene just cracked me up
The designer's at a western leather/tack store looking for supplies to make a rustic-style sex swing and turns to one of the store employees for advice, which initially goes about as amusingly as you would expect

So then she pulls up some pictures to give him an idea of what she needs
And he's Immediately like

The professional disgust, I'm living

I just finished watching 'How to Build a Sex Room' on Netflix and ... it is probably one of the most sex positive shows I've seen. The soundtrack is completely awesome and every song they play use is a bop. Also, the designer, Melanie Rose is lovely and so accepting.
And she and her contractor are a fucking kick when they're together - and for as much as they joke, her contractor is just as open and accepting as she is. And the people that are featured on this show are such an amazing cross-section of America.
More vanilla couples, people on their second wedding, gay couples, lesbian couples, nonbinary, polycules, a single woman finding her way after 22 years of marriage, a couple where the man was raised super conservative so is far newer to kink than his wife, highschool sweethearts who have been together 17 years where the woman tops ...
This 8 episode 'design series' actually does an amazing job of showing that kink comes in all shapes, sizes and flavours.
I highly reccommend it.

no but really how to build a sex room is delighting me. the host meets people where they are without shaming them, helps prod what they’re curious about, and takes people to get real demos of bdsm and other various kinks from actual real experts. it’s home makeover and education all in one go. it is the antithesis of 50 shades. there’s actually a lot about how she handles sex and desire that i find really powerful but i don’t have time to get into it 😂 def try it, i think!

Friend: *walking in after a long day of work* OMG WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING?
Me: *snacking on some chips and lounging on the couch* It's on Netflix it's called how to build a sex room
Friend: But your asexual! Why would you want to watch that?
Me: I find it fascinating. You know how you like to watch serial killer docs but you don't want to kill anyone?
Friend: Yeah and your point is?
Me: It's the same thing here. I find shows or movies like this interesting but I don't want to have sex.
Friend: oh okay...but do you have to watch it in our living room?
Me: *groans as I stand up gathering my chips and blanket, before saying jokingly* and people call me a prude
Friend: Touché

My husband likes to wear panties and be dominated. I like to be slathered in honey and bees, and we just want a room where we can truly be ourselves.

Binging the sex room show while the heat wave fucks up your sleep is all fun and games until you watch the very much in love queer couple who trust each other to the ends of the earth experiment with shibari together and you get taken out at the knees by a baseball bat made of Yearning

To my “old” tumblr friends…I have no doubt we would all like to hire this woman to design our dream rooms.
New and improved Netflix and chill.

The idea that a sexless marriage is a failing one always makes me so uncomfortable
I'm watching how to build a sex room (which is great btw) episode 3 and the host lady was asking how many times a week they have sex and the guy was like.... none. and they all like... wince. And the lady was like 'i understand a marriage can't sustain without sex'.
And it's something I've heard so many times that makes me so vastly uncomfortable. Even if both parties aren't asexual, it's still a weird way to think about marriage to me.
Also, the idea that having sex every day is a sign of a healthy marriage is also just weird. Like, sex every day? for your whole life??? until you die??? That uh. idk. i don't vibe with the idea. weird. sorta horrifying.
i get that if one person wants it and the other doesn't then it's a matter of like, how do you deal with being in a relationship where two people want different things. or if both want to but it just never happens.
but in general why is it just the norm to think this way?

Look, I'm just saying, if you're writing smut and need a little kick, watch "How to build a sex room" there's no sex in it. But good lord, does seeing the fabulous Melanie Rose and her design skills are inspiring.
(It got the juices for this August fic going wild!)
