Juice Wrld Legends Never Die
Tumblr media
For this weeks blog post we had to pick any album that we wanted. I was thinking of different artists I have been listening to over the summer and Juice Wrld was heavily on my playlist. I chose to do this album because I think overall it is a great album for many different reasons. For those who do not know who Juice Wrld (Jarad Higgins) he is a famous rapper from Chicago Illinois who unfortunately passed away in December of 2019 of a drug overdose. After his death the album Legends Never Die was released. Not even as an artist but just as a person he seemed like a genuine good hearted person and you can hear it through all his music including in this album. The opening intro to this album is a clip of him talking about real life issues such as heartbreak, anxiety, and more and tries to inspire his fans to do what you want in life and not let anyone stop you and sets the tone for the rest of the tracks on the album.
youtube
The track Righteous seems to be a very popular one on the album and I can understand why. Everything from the instrumental to the lyrics go together so well. Being able to listen to a song like this after an artist has passed completely changes the vibe to the song. The lyrics in this song talk about how he was feeling and some of the problems that he was going through. I think that is why he became such a popular artist because not only was he a talented artist, the stuff that he talks in his music could be very relatable to people. in this song especially you can hear him talk about real life struggles such as substance abuse and mental health issues. He talks about dying in this song and gives the song a different kind of feeling because you can tell what he raps about was genuine and what he really was going through or thought about.
This album has so many good songs and it makes it hard for me to pick and choose what songs I want to go over. Another song I really enjoyed on the album is Smile. This song features another artist called the Weeknd and this song for me was very relatable over the summer. My take on the song is that it is about his personal relationship with someone that he loved. Even though they are not together he still wants them to be happy and this just shows the kind of person he really was and how he cared for people. I think the Weeknd on this song was a perfect choice and compliments the song very well.
The track Hate The Other Side is probably personally one of my favorite songs. It does not have too deep of a message or make you emotional but I just enjoy listening to it. This song usually always comes up on my recently played list or I will put it on while I am at the gym because it was one of the more hype kind of songs on the album. This shows how talented he is with his music and can reach to different kinds of audiences. He really is a legend be because he can make good hooks, freestyle, and just produce good music in general. Also the other artists on this song are really good especially The Kid Laroi because I listen to him probably daily.

Lifes A Mess
On this album there were a lot of collaborations including the song lifes a mess with Halsey. Once again it is another great song and I particularly enjoy it because the lyrics have a deep message and are very relatable but has a good beat which is more vibey which for me gives it a different tone to the song. Their is a part in the song where him and Halsey sing together and I was not expecting it to sound as good as it did because of the difference in their styles. Being able to see a collaborations like this on the album is great because its not like their could be a chance for it to happen again.  This song gives off similar vibes to another song on the album called come and go. Come and Go has a similar experience with good more serious kind of lyrics but it is paired with a great instrumental from Marshmello that is more upbeat and gives off more energy compared to how it could of been if paired with slower instrumental.
One of the reviews from NME that I read was complaining that the album was too bloated and feature packed. I could see how someone could think that but because of the album coming out after death I would want as many songs and collaborations on the album as possible. Most of the other reviews that I read had a similar viewpoint that I had and agree that it was a great album and just solidified of how good of an artist he was making him the legend that he. Overall I loved the album and the name of it worked perfect because he was a legend and because of his music he will continue to live on.

Professional Matters
Chapter 2
I took a sigh of relief when I pulled into the parking lot of the studio. I was all the way on south side LA in a moderately sketchy area. I had never been to this studio but I knew it was notorious for west coast rappers. I glanced at the time on my console to see I was running a bit later than expected. After I got my work done for the day, I ended up falling asleep and having to rush home, change and head back out again.
I didn’t want to do too much so I decided on a white tee, black jeans and Yeezys. I pulled down the mirror compartment in my car and fixed my hair for the fourth time in the last 30 minutes. My chestnut hair was starting to get so long again even though it felt like I just got a haircut. I kind of didn’t know what to do with it, but honestly I look good with most styles so it doesn't bother me too much.
The bags under my eyes were a different story. My brown eyes were bright but I couldn’t deny how tired I was. Between all my obligations, things are getting very thin. But the money and progress I’m making is worth the bags though. After boosting my confidence for another moment, I closed the mirror, turned off my engine and climbed out my Lexus.
Walking into the building, I straightened out my clothes and adjusted my jewelry. I didn’t want to do too much so I decided on a white tee, black jeans, Yeezy’s and a couple gold chains. I know a lot of people in the industry feel the need to be flashy but I’m comfortable not having all that (yet).
I had to be buzzed in at the door and upon entrance, I gave the receptionist my name.
“Justin Bieber. For the 999 session?” The woman checked her computer. I didn’t realize my name would have to be on a list but I guess Juice really is blowing up. I’m proud.
“Yeah.”
“Alright they’re down the hall on the right to the very back. Studio 11. Make sure the recording light isn’t on before you go in.”
“Thank you, beautiful“ I smiled before setting off to the room. Even though the building looked a little rough from the outside, I was well kept and obviously historical. I couldn’t help but be in awe seeing all the signatures and pictures along the wall. From Biggie to Wayne, everyone had a picture up. I could be making history just by walking through here. As soon as I made it to door eleven, the recording light conveniently turned off. I wasn’t nervous but sometimes in this industry you just never know what to expect. With a sigh I did a quick double knock on the door before twisting the handle.
“Broooooo you made!” Juice exclaimed as soon as he saw me walk in. With a wobble and laugh, he passed the half naked girls in the studio to dap me up before pulling me into a hug.
“Fuck yeah bro. It's nice to see you too. Thank you for inviting me,” I shook his hand again and began to take in the room. It was a decent size studio space with really nice equipment that I would just die to work with. There were three couches on one side of the room and the recording booth on the opposite side.
Like last time, there was a lot of people in the studio. Though I recognized his manager, Max, and a couple of others from his team, everyone else in the room seemed to be friends and groupies. They laughed loudly while mixing and preparing their drugs, drinks and substances of choice. One girl with two red streaks in her gave me a wink before snorting two lines off a compact mirror.
“You want anything?” Juice asked as he started shuffling around.
“Nah bro. I might roll up but that’s it,” I turned down his offer causing a few of the girls to boo me. I rolled my eyes and redirected our attention. “So what you on today?”
“Bro honestly my homegirl came into LA today so this a chill session. She produces so we were just going to be on the freestyles today. She got a few beats I been waiting to hear,” Juice nodded before sparking his blunt.
“Say less,” I nodded though I was a bit disappointed. Obviously I didn’t expect him to tell me to get in the booth and start recording, but shit I did have hope... No telling if any of the other people in the room were hoping for the same.
“We just got started an hour ago. I don’t know what Milli bout to play but I might have you hop on. I low-key want an R&B hook and that song you posted was hard as fuck. That R&B shit always gon’ hit.”
“Thanks man. I was think that-“
“It’s shot o fucking clock motherfuckers!” The door to the room swung open with a crash. When my eyes focused on the commotion, I swear my heart stopped for half a second. Standing in the doorway was single handedly the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.
Her brown skin was glistening as she showed her perfect smile before kissing the unopened Hennessy bottle in her hand. She was wearing baggy cargo pants that swallowed her whole frame and one of the smallest tube tops in existence. The streetwear look created a contrast so stark, it complimented her body drastically... even though her body was far from her best feature.
Her beauty was ethereal, especially in the face. Her big, wide set eyes squinted as she stormed towards us and stole the blunt from Juice Wrld’s hand. It hung between her glitter gloss lathered lips as she poured the first shot of Hennessy into Juice’s mouth. I watched her pour carefully into the rapper’s mouth as she inhaled the blunt deeply, causing smoke to fill the vicinity.
“Shit my bad,” She giggled, swatting away the smoke from our faces. Though her lips were pressed around the blunt, you could tell she was struggling not to smile and drop it. As soon as Juice swallowed his shot, he took the blunt back with an eye cringing laugh. Upon the moment the smoke cleared, she was staring me dead in my eyes. She acknowledged me for the first time with a smirk but it felt like I had seen her face a million times.
Curious.
Next she pushed her bleach blonde hair back behind her ears before leaning back her head back and taking a shot herself. With her neck lifted I noticed the large intricate butterfly tatted on her neck. I have never seen a pretty girl with a neck tattoo that bold, but it was sexy as fuck.
“Shot O Clock?” She challenged me. Her brown eyes moved from mine as she examined my face and looked me up and down before meeting my eyes again. I recognized the look she gave and I didn’t want to ignore it. I nodded at her invitation and with a smile she grabbed my chin and pulled me down closer to her height.
Her touch. Everything changed.
I don’t know how to describe what I was feeling other than my heart and dick instantly jumping as she pushed my head back. What the fuck? She poured much more liquor into my mouth than I expected, a bit running out the side of my mouth. I lifted my head back and swallowed all she gave me obediently and wiped away the rest. She smiled before leaning into me. I almost jumped at how close she was getting to me, not knowing her next moved. Just when she was close enough to press up on me, she reached on the table behind me and grabbed something.
Swiftly she leaned back and shook the black hat in her hand, insinuating innocence. I already knew she was far from that. She put the Chanel bucket hat onto her bone straight \hair, completing her outfit.
“Shit bro sorry I’m fuck tweaking. This my homegirl KCM, she’s producing today,” Juice Wrld spoke. He apologized for the awkwardness but I felt anything but that. It felt like time stopped when I looked at this girl.
“KCM?” I questioned not missing a beat. I looked down and met her eyes, challenging a response.
“Karma Countin’ Millions,” She said proudly before reaching her dainty hand out to shake mine. “Karma. Producer.”
“Justin Bieber. Singer,” I took her hand.
“What do you sing, Justin Bieber?”
“Anything.” I tried to compose myself.
“He’ll fuck up R&B in a heartbeat,” Juice spoke as Karma and I let go of each other’s hand. "Lowkey may want him on that third beat you sent me.”
My ears perked at the sound of that. I came here for a reason and I can’t be thirsty over this producer for many other reasons. The two main ones being Hailey and taking this opportunity seriously. She was pretty but pretty isn’t enough to make me fuck myself over.
“Yeah, just let me know bro,” I redirected my focus to pressing matters.
“I’ve actually been playing around with that beat. Added in drums and synthetics,” Karma moved past a topless brunette and plopped into the chair at the desk. “Both of y’all, take two shots while I pull this up,” She demanded before clicking away at the computer screen.
-------------------
“Aight, I think this is it!” Karma called, causing the room to quiet down. At this point, I was slouched on the couch trapped between three coked out hoes and I was very fucked up. I think if I were to stand, I would most definitely fall. Karma had us taking shots every twenty minutes so the fact that she’s able to keep her eyes open, let alone produce right now is extremely impressive.
Honestly she was impressive across the board. I don’t want to say I underestimated her based on appearance but I definitely didn’t expect all this. She is a product of pure talent.
“Aye, hold up. Lemme get on Live ri quick. This hoe going too crazy,” Karma unplugged the headphone jack before unlocking her phone. A few moments later, she had her screen propped up against the monitor as people continued to join the stream.
“Y’all come over here,” She nodded over at Juice and I. He grabbed his styrofoam cup and stumbled to the other side of the studio. With only two stumbles I managed to sit on the stool behind Karma as I watched her press play. Immediately the hum of the bass came in on the song, more amplified than ever.
"Vibe on this bitch, though A lighter
Nah, in the room
Oh
Uh-huh” Juice’s intro started lowly.
“New Juice Wrld, New Justin Bieber. Produced by KCM.” Karma introduced before leaning back in her seat and sparked another blunt as my voice started to ring out.
"Tell me where you wanna go, I can take you there. We can fly across the globe baby don't be scared. Don't be scared. Baby don't be scared, no, no,” I sang along but never in my life, had I heard my voice recorded and produced like this. The nodding of my head was instant as the deep autotune transitioned into my normal pitch over the heavy base.
"You deserve a storybook ending, fairytale, fairytale. You deserve a storybook ending, fairytale, fairytale,” Karma chopped up the rest of my chorus, allowing the perfect transition to Juice’s verse.
"You work numbers, work wonders
You done woke me up from my eternal slumber
I'm the lightning, you're the thunder
There's a difference 'tween, "I need you, " and, "I want you"
Girl, I need you
Good sex led to conversations getting a little deeper, uh
Tell me your darkest secrets, shit you wouldn't even tell Jesus, uh My karma been tweaking so much, I don't even believe in karma.”
Everyone in the studio was nodding their heads as the rest of the song poured out the speakers. This was a hit. For sure. I couldn’t see all that well but I know I saw verified checks, fire emojis, and heart eyes flooding the comment section.
“This is one of 5 songs made tonight. All freestyled. Fuck outta here. These niggas next up. Lemme play this next shit,” Karma yelled before cutting the first song and going to the second, which was even harder. I was only on back vocals but I was appreciative to get any play time, especially on two different songs.
“That’s all imma give y’all, we're dropping this shit sunday night so y’all better be ready to stream. Follow my bros Juice and Justin. Super talented kids."
“999. Young niggas doing this shit” Juice called. “Bye live!”
“Bye!” I spoke up just as she was ending the stream. Karma quickly spun in her hair and looked at the pair of us.
“20 minutes left in this session. We just made hits. Where’s the after party?” She asked. Fuck. After party? I couldn’t think straight now and we were working this fucked up... I’m scared to find out what after party means.
“Honestly I might go h-“
“Don’t say home,” Karma cut me off "You got any songs out? Any new songs? Is your soundcloud and IG boomin?”
“Um well-“
“They’re about to be. You just made a song with one of the most popular up and coming rappers from the North. You’re on and people gon know your name very soon. Celebrate with us tonight,” She pleaded. Even after hours of work, drinking and drugs her beauty never swayed. It’s not that she is irresistible, it's that she’s right (or that’s the reasoning I was trying to convince myself).
I’ve waited so long for a big opportunity and here it is, potentially. I deserve to celebrate. “Okay.”
“I was about to say don’t make me beg,” She hummed with a more than suggestive undertone.
“I should’ve held out then,” rolled off my tongue swiftly. I couldn’t help myself.
“Don’t play with me, Justin Bieber,” She had a smile on her face but I knew nothing was a joke. She wants me.
“Max, get food and shit sent to the house. Hoes, tell y’all friends it's an afterparty at my crib," Juice called to the room.

"Before I get up out of here, I wanna tell you that you can do anything you put your mind to, period
As long as you work hard, give it your all and don't listen to what anybody got to say, it's your world, you can do what you want, on bro, period
Always remember that, I love every single last one of y'all, everybody get home safe, gang, gang"
haven't appeared here in a while but the Juice WRLD album got me really emotional and I have to show up here and say some words about this man. juice, i know i just got to really meet your work and your art some days before your passing, but the way he makes you, as a fan, feel close to him, by his songs, lyrics, by the way he talks, you know, everything, it hits different. this is what makes him special in a unique way, the passion in the way he does that, the way he approaches the fans to him, it feels like you know him really close. and this is why his art is amazing, because he really expressed himself in a perfectly way. his talent in writing songs, in freestyling, in touching you seemed to be endless, he had a genius mind, period.
the anxiety-intro got me crying my eyes out because it was so beautiful, everything about this quote, every single word he said in this intro is something gorgeous because it really goes juice's mind about the sadness he had inside but him acknowledging the impact he makes in people's life in his music ("I don't know, music is just a beautiful thing, like I love myself so much, as far as the way I make music, the way God made me, the way God wired me to do the things that I do, and to change the world the way that I can
I think you're an agent of change, I think you're touchin' the wave, this generation that very few, if no one else, can")
and it ends with a inspiring speech about how you can change the world too. those last words i put in the beginning of the text made me cry and made me think about how valuous my life can be yet it feels difficult to WANT being alive and feeling like you're useful to the future but him saying that made me believe that yes, i am. yes, i can be an agent of change too. i feel like no one touched me this way like juice did,and no words can explain that, but depending on me i wont let his legacy die. i want him to live forever through his music. i want him to be everything.
J, you won't be forgotten. #LLJW 🕊 999 ❤️

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 30/01/2021 (Wellerman, Fredo, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish & ROSALÍA)
I’ve never been more thankful for a song being this big – “drivers license” by Olivia Rodrigo spends a third week at #1, blocking “WITHOUT YOU” by The Kid LAROI at #2. Thank God. Anyway, we’ve got 10 new arrivals so let’s cut the chit-chat and start REVIEWING THE CHARTS.
Tumblr media
Rundown
Of course, after this brief rundown we always do. Thankfully, the site actually updated last week, so I can go through this as routinely as possible. For drop-outs, it’s a lot of recent new arrivals falling out either off the debut or a few weeks after – most of them being pretty crap – but we do have some notable drop-outs, like “Forever Young” by Becky Hill, “Plugged In Freestyle” by A92 and Fumez the Engineer, “pov” by Ariana Grande, “Love is a Compass” by Griff, “Tick Tock” by Clean Bandit and Mabel featuring 24kGoldn, “Lasting Lover” by Sigala and James Arthur, and finally, “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. Now to move onto the chart proper, we do have some movement to discuss. Firstly, we have some fallers, those being “Dynamite” by BTS at #32, “positions” by Ariana Grande at #39, “Lemonade” by Internet Money and Gunna featuring Don Toliver and NAV at #41, “All I Want” by Olivia Rodrigo at #43 off of the return, “SO DONE” by The Kid LAROI at #46, “Best Friend” by Saweetie featuring Doja Cat at #47, “Midnight Sky” by Miley Cyrus at #48, “What You Know Bout Love” by the late Pop Smoke at #51, “Wellerman” by the Longest Johns practically being replaced at #52 (We’ll discuss this more later), “See Nobody” by Wes Nelson and Hardy Caprio at #53, “Notorious” by Bugzy Malone and Chip at #55, “Looking for Me” by Paul Woodford, Diplo and Kareen Lomax at #60, “Bad Boy” by the late Juice WRLD and Young Thug unfortunately purging to #62, “WAP” by Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion at #67, “Pinging (6 Figures)” by Central Cee crashing off of the debut to #72 and “Diamonds” by Sam Smith at #74, joining our two returning entries – which are just older songs getting another brief pick-up at the bottom of the charts. Those are “Baby Shark” by Pinkfong and “Shallow” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper at #75 and #73 respectively, by the way. Oh, and we also have “Martin & Gina” by Polo G at #65, but I honestly can’t see that song going anywhere – and I really like it. This doesn’t mean that we don’t have any gains, however, as finally, we can see some rising hits trying to fill in the cracks, like both of Rudimental’s debuts from last week: “Be the One” with MORGAN, TIKE and Digga D is up to #58, whilst the incredibly worse single “Regardless” with RAYE is cracking into the top 40 at #40. Sigh, well, we do have some more promising gains, like... “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals at #38? “Friday” by Riton, Nightcrawlers and Musafa & Hypeman at #37 off of the debut? Okay, 2021 might end up being pretty rough, huh? Thankfully, we have a plentiful amount of new arrivals to waive any of my fears, so let’s just start with those.
NEW ARRIVALS
#70 – “Overpriced” – M Huncho
Produced by Quincy Tellem
Oh, come on! Okay, so this is M Huncho, UK trao’s answer to the late MF DOOM, except without any of the lyrical complexity, storytelling abilities, genuine wit, charming sampling and production techniques, brilliant discography... he’s pretty much just a guy whose main gimmick is the mask, and it’s on this single cover too, seemingly in a museum. This song in particular is just one of these melodic trap cuts with wavy acoustic guitars blended with synths beyond recognition, topped off with odd bass mastering and a checked-out performance from M Huncho, who spends way too much time on his verses going “doo-doo-doo-doo-doo”, before the beat switches for a verse that fades out after like 20 seconds. What’s the point of any of this, honestly? It’s not awful – the bass does kind of knock – but I really don’t understand why this is here, or why M Huncho is a big name. It’s not even as good as AJ Tracey’s trap bangers and it’s not even as funny as D-Block Europe, which I’m surprised by, considering that he had his own stupid hit with “Pee Pee” around this time last year, and that song was actually good. Also, M Huncho, what do you think your fans get from you dissing them? If you’re going to brag about your “house by the lake” and then rap about how some unnamed individual “still lives at their mum’s in a council estate”, consider that a lot of your audience will still live with their parents in council housing or be surrounded by people who do. Someone who really came from poverty should know that this is classist and disrespectful to your own demographic. Yeah, this is worthless. Why’s this guy still charting? At least Young Adz knows how to write a hook.
#65 – “New Love” – Silk City and Ellie Goulding
Produced by Silk City and Picard Brothers
Okay, so we do have some energy on the chart – or at least half of the credited acts have. Silk City is a duo of producers, those being Diplo, a true weirdo in mainstream EDM who’s honestly kind of fascinating and oftentimes a fluke genius (especially in its work in Major Lazer and Jack U with Skrillex), and Mark Ronson, one of the greatest producers of the 21st century so far, probably most known for “Uptown Funk!”. These guys did have a hit together with Dua Lipa in 2018 in the form of “Electricity”, but it’s been a while and I’m interested to see how they work with the complete non-presence that is Ellie Goulding. It’s with some level of disappointment that I say that she’s not a non-presence here, as this is otherwise a pretty neat house tune with some excellent 90s keys and a deep-house groove I think is pretty fun. The strings in the pre-chorus are great and build-up to a fantastic chorus... or at least the instrumental is fantastic, because Goulding is a waste here, mixed way too high and honestly just faltering her vocals here. She sounds awkward through multi-tracking and even worse without it, as she clearly goes for a rough swagger that cannot work with her light, almost fairy-like voice she’s relied on much of her career. The intricacies of this production are really admirable, but Goulding was clearly an afterthought. With a real diva on vocals, or honestly just a sample of a soul or diva house track, this could be excellent. As it is, I’m bored. Next.
#63 – “Typhoons” – Royal Blood
Produced by Royal Blood
Oh, okay. Well, this is a pleasant surprise. Royal Blood are an English garage rock duo that rock pretty hard, and don’t go for anything else beyond that, which to me is a breath of fresh air, and, yeah, this is good. Is it as good as their debut? Of course not, their biggest hit “Figure it Out” is still incredible, and this one goes for a more synthesized 70s feel, even accentuated by disco keys in the pre-chorus. The riffs are still here though, as that main guitar line is pretty awesome. I see this as a mix of garage rock revival bands from the 2000s like the White Stripes, as well as some stoner-adjacent bands like Queens of the Stone Age, with a more classic hard-rock groove and Mike Kerr’s signature yelp, and it works for what it is, so I’m excited for that upcoming single. Nothing’s particularly impressive here, but I’ll definitely go for this over the rest of what we have charting, so I’m not complaining. This is good, you should check these guys out, even if they tend to be a bit derivative. That tense bridge with the looming background vocals and intensifying riff is genuinely epic, by the way, even if there isn’t much more of a pay-off behind just... the chorus again, which ends up rendering as flat as a result. Regardless, it’s a good break from the norm – which for a chart week like this, I’m especially glad is here.
#61 – “Your Love (9PM)” – ATB, Topic and A75
Produced by ATB, Topic and Rudi Dittmann
German DJ ATB was showing his girlfriend his new recording studio when he got carried away with a single guitar sound and made a song out of it, “9PM (Till I Come)”, named after the time the track was finished. Later on, he took the track and added some whispered vocals from Spanish model Yolanda Riviera. This happened in 1999, by the way, when this song was released to great success in Europe, leading to a hilariously dated album cover but still a UK #1. The song is honestly kind of bad, relying on a pretty typical house groove, ugly MIDI guitars and that seductive vocal loop. Regardless, since 90s nostalgia has come way too fast, Topic has remixed the track with A75, a collaboration we’ve seen before on “Breaking Me” from last year, which sucked. To be fair, the original song is pretty empty, so I’m interested to hear A75 add some vocals... and he just sounds pained over a deep-house rip of the original. The ugly MIDI melody stays, just now it’s drowned out and even more synthesized – this is the guitar sound you liked so much? I hope she left you. Let’s move on.
#59 – “My Head & My Heart” – Ava Max
Produced by Jonas Blue, Earwulf and Cirkut
Speaking of being bored, here’s pop singer Ava Max, with a new lead single from the deluxe edition of her debut studio album, Heaven & Hell. This one’s produced by Jonas Blue, which, alongside a redundant “Jonas Blue remix”, is probably why it’s charting. What’s sad is it’s not really very good, as the vocals are over-processed over fake hand-claps and clipping mixes that make those plastic synths sound even worse. Admittedly, I like the rubbery future bass-esque bass line here, but that’s really as far as my appreciation for this goes, as the writing is non-existent, and Ava Max is barely here. It’s honestly really similar to “New Love”, except this one’s not even as interesting as that track, going for an exhaustingly tired house-pop style that while she is a natural fit for, it does make the 2000s synth-pop she started with sound inspired in comparison. Oh, and the “Jonas Blue remix” is practically a glorified bass-boost that makes this sound even uglier, so, yeah, skip this.
#42 – “Apricots” – Bicep
Produced by Bicep
Bicep is a Northern Irish electronic duo from Belfast, and this is an instrumental from their most recent album, Isles, which clearly must have stood out enough for it to debut at #42. I can understand why too, as that sample from Hugh Tracey’s African music recordings, particularly the vocal sample used, is really infectious and interesting. I don’t think everything surrounding it is enough to really make it less annoying, as it running through nearly the entirety of a four-minute track makes this sample lose its lustre too quickly. It runs its course far before the song has the chance to build up into a house track, with that sample crushing everything that isn’t the percussion in the mix anyway. The keys are really cool, and I can’t fault the strings and ambiance that keeps the song building up for as long as it does. It also takes a sample from a Bulgarian folk choir, which they paralleled to the Celtic folk they grew up hearing, and honestly, this is just a cool blending of global music rather than an actually good song, ending with me respecting this more than actually enjoying it. The synths by the end sound fantastic as does the Bulgarian chanting, but it doesn’t really have a great climax or drop to make the build-up worth it, defaulting to a generic house groove by the end that fades out before it can have any real impact. So, yeah, this isn’t bad, but feels like a waste of some really great ideas. I guess I can say that “Northern Irish remix of an English ethnomusicologist’s recordings of African music that also samples a Bulgarian folk tune” isn’t quite as much of a developed idea as “Kazakh remix of an American rapper of Guyanese descent’s trap song in a Brazilian house style released on a Russian record label”.
#35 – “Lo Vas A Olvidar” – Billie Eilish and ROSALÍA
Produced by FINNEAS
It’s not often that songs in non-English languages chart in the UK. Whilst in the US, Latin music is such a force that it’ll launch hits for many Spanish-speaking artists, this isn’t the case in decidedly smaller Britain, where a still multicultural society tends to produce art that is always in English. To be fair, we don’t have a place like Puerto Rico, and the few songs I’ve talked about this year that have been in a different language... well, basically the one song I can remember off the top of my head, was in a Nigerian Creole language. So, why’s a Spanish song by Spanish artist ROSALÍA charting so high? Well, it’s also a Billie Eilish song, and it’s also from the HBO teen drama Euphoria. Yeah, a teen drama makes a lot of sense for Eilish to soundtrack. This has been teased since 2019, and is actually ROSALÍA’s first song to chart here in the UK, so is it any good? Well, yeah, actually, it is. Both Eilish and ROSALÍA have excellent whispery tones that complement FINNEAS’ muted, ambient production perfectly, and their harmonisation sounds great, with both singing in Spanish here for the most part. That chorus is pretty janky, though, and I don’t really see the point in the Auto-Tuned interludes, even if they both sound great playing off of each other with a lot of tuning in the outro. This is pretty minimal and dare I say awkward, kind of eerie, so I don’t see it sticking around, but as a longing break-up track, they both sell it well. Next.
#28 – “Skin” – Sabrina Carpenter
Produced by Ryan McMahon
Joshua Bassett’s response flopped immensely, meaning that now it’s Sabrina Carpenter’s time to shine, because if it’s anything she gets out of this Disney love triangle, it’s a hit song, and people clearly want to hear more from the women than they do from Josh. Telling. Now I’m not one to follow Disney teen drama because this is all a marketing gimmick. I mean, the songs dropped every Friday so anyone who can’t see through this is either blind or... a child, and considering the audience, that second one is more likely, which is fine. Popular music is, ultimately, in the hands of teenagers and record executives, and all of these break-up response diss track... things, tend to feed into both hands, whilst also giving these talented young actors a bigger break. This is Carpenter’s first charting hit in the UK, after all. The song is decidedly worse than “drivers license” though, and by a lot, as the mixing here isn’t even competent, as Carpenter’s voice clips through these ugly pianos, worsened by how her voice does not sound great here at all, as she struggles through that terrible chorus. She may say that this isn’t a response to Rodrigo, but given the lyrics and how quickly this rushed release was put out, are we really supposed to believe that? The percussion here is gross as well, drowned in bad reverb that makes this just sound grey and dull. The strings building up to a climax are barely there, and when they are, they sound like they’re elevating a really garbage performance from Carpenter, who can barely keep up. This is supposed to be a ballad yet it sounds so stiff and controlled, meaning that Carpenter trying to let loose on the vocals makes this awkward and painful. I’m sorry, but this is really bad, and I hope it doesn’t stick around. Thankfully, I don’t see that happening.
#20 – “Back to Basics” – Fredo
Produced by Dave
Lil Chocolate Frog’s got a new record out this week that I’ve yet to hear, and this is the lead single, produced by his long-time friend and collaborator, Dave – who’s awesome. I’ve typically been less kind to his mate Fredo but honestly, his ever so slightly off-kilter style has grown on me too, and this song is a pretty good introduction to that. It’s one verse over rattling trap hi-hats and a really eerie vocal sample, and Fredo flows casually and smoothly over the beat, in his typical careless, just barely there style, which works well over a pretty subtle beat like this. Fredo’s lyrics are pretty interesting here too, as amidst flexing and gun-play, he has some pretty funny lines, although far from Dave’s wordplay, rather relying on fun one-liners where he says he’s “kind of Christian”, doing revision on drug trafficking, will run for mayor, and because of how much of the gang violence is sadly amongst ethnic minorities, he himself is racially profiling his “opps”. One line near the end of the track actually made me laugh, when he says he counts up twenties while eating porridge. It’s not funny on paper, sure, but the delivery is gold. He shows more character here than he has since “Funky Friday”, also with Dave, so I’m pretty excited to hear this record, which Dave actually executively produced. It’s also got the late Pop Smoke on a track with Young Adz, so at least I’ll let out more of those laughs. This lead single is pretty good though, and I can see it going top 10 next week with the album boost.
#3 – “Wellerman – Sea Shanty” (220 KID x Billen Ted Remix) – Nathan Evans
Produced by Saltwaves, Billen Ted and 220 KID
Last week, the sea shanty “Wellerman” charted as a cover by the Longest Johns. It’s a fine acapella cover, and this version, by Nathan Evans, was originally similarly acapella, except for the tap of a table as percussion to keep time. This version got even more viral on British TikTok, and if I recall correctly, he quit his job to be signed by Polydor, which is pretty scummy on Polydor’s part. I mean, you know this guy won’t have any more hits. Regardless, this version debuted at #3 thanks to a remix by DJs 220 KID and Billen Ted, three English producers. According to their Spotify duo, Billen Ted used to be a death metal band of all things but then transitioned into writing for dance-pop tunes, and have worked with 220 KID, even if this is technically only their second single. This remix is actually pretty cool to be honest, as it takes the original track and adds some needed energy, mostly through this generic 90s house beat and some admittedly really nice pianos. It’s nothing special, and I would usually criticise something this generic, but the song’s not even two minutes and it’s a pretty inoffensive remix that genuinely adds to the original song through that brilliant flip of the original hook melody in the drop, so I can’t complain. This won’t last, but I’m not mad that it’s here.
Conclusion
I’m actually somewhat pleased with this chart week, which I wasn’t expecting initially, as you can probably tell from my above cynicism. Regardless, we’ve got some variety here (though I don’t see much of it sticking) and I’ll give Best of the Week to Royal Blood for “Typhoons”, with a tied Honourable Mention for “Back to Basics” by Fredo, and, God damn it, “Wellerman” by Nathan Evans and remixed by 220 KID and Billen Ted. Shut up, it’s fun! Worst of the Week will probably go to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Skin”, with a Dishonourable Mention for the complete lack of effort that is M Huncho’s “Overpriced”, just being mildly offensive if anything. Here’s our top 10:
Tumblr media
For next week, I mean, a girl can hope for some Weezer, but it’s more likely that we’ll be met with a Fredo album bomb and some scattered efforts from that middling Lil Durk deluxe edition. For now though, you can follow me @cactusinthebank for more ramblings and thanks for reading. I’ll see you next week.

CHARACTER PROFILE (TW; Depression, suicidal tendencies, under age sex/drinking):
Vitya Cristo has always been the baby of his family. It was not due to his age, or order in the births of his siblings, but more his health. It was discovered in his infancy he was born with a congenital heart defect. His skin was pale, he would lose his breath while feeding, and his hands and feet would swell up. His father, being a rich man in the pharmaceutical industry, wanted to fix his boy, but the medical professionals said the case was not severe enough for infant surgery. In fact, he should live a relatively normal life. His father did not see it that way. While his siblings would wander their large, mansion-like house in Vladivostok, Vitya was ordered to stay indoors. He was not allowed to play sports if not escorted, and was even monitored by a personal nanny to most of his schooling. He was isolated, unable to be a regular child because of his helicopter-like father.
Vitya’s mother was the light of his life. The woman had a fire in her, one that was freer and looser than her husband. She loved the man, of course, but disagreed with how protective he was of their son. On nights where he was away, she would sneak Vitya into the fields and courtyards and let him run around and be free. One of Vitya’s most prized memories is running through their lawn with the fireflies. He loved these moments with his mother and he learned to never take the good things for granted.
When Vitya started to enter his teen years, his father would take him to work more and more. Some days, his father would show him the labs and workers that were developing medicines, pills, and more. His father was introducing him into the business, with the obvious intent to pass it on to him. It was a cushiony job, with minimal risk, and little to no physical activity and enough money to set him up for life. It was clear was his father was trying his best to keep his son sheltered as he entered those rebellious years. It was also during this time that Vitya started displaying depressive symptoms, including self-destructive tendencies like playing with lighters and razor knives. In a hope to loosen the leash, Vitya’s mother convinced her husband to send him to school instead of teaching him at home. He, woefully, agreed.
When Vitya was sent away to an all-boys boarding school, the hope was he would become a fine young man, ready to inherit the family riches and pharmaceutical business. At first, he lived every day as if his father was there, as if his nanny still tended to him. It all changed when one night, his dorm mate woke him up to sneak out for the night and meet several other boys at the river nearby. It was near mid-terms, and the boys needed a break. Little Vitya could barely contain himself when he saw all the contraband they brought along. Booze, weed, satellite internet for porn, and hours to get through it all. That night, he partied like an actual teen for the first time in his life. He had his first kiss that night, his first blowjob, and later, at around five in the morning, his first partner. He dove into the deep-end, his sheltered soul yearning for the release and freedom all this brought him. And he reveled in it.
Vitya lived a double life from then on. During his time at home, he was the model son. Well-behaved, well-spoken. But at school, away from prying eyes, he was an absolute devil. Hours of drunken parties, bad habits like casual sex and smoking being his two favorites, and sometimes, getting into physical fights when his anger got out of hand. Vitya and his growing band of misfits found a way to bypass the school’s firewall, getting access to explicit content without hindrance. Vitya’s grades started to slip, but he didn’t care. He kept them up enough so his father would be satisfied, but that did not mean he was studying more. There was many-a-teacher he had dirt on, blackmailing his way to reasonable grades. He became a terror on the innocent boarding school almost overnight.
With his time at the school coming to an end, Vitya knew one thing for certain; there was no way he was going to be some CEO ass, dominating over people he would never bother to learn the name of. He still played the model son, faking his way into his father’s good graces, but each sideways glance to his mother told her what he really wanted; to get out. So, she did the impossible. Under the sleeping eyes of his nanny and father, his mother woke him up and snuck him outside, just like when he was a child. This time, though, she handed him a packed bag, keys to one of the cars, and a plane ticket, telling him to go. She may love her life of luxury and easy living, but she knew this was not the place for her baby. She only asked that Vitya keep an eye on his health, and use those American doctors for all their worth.
Vitya left that night and never looked back. He started out in New York, wandering to all the sites. He went to Pittsburg, New Orleans, Austin, Los Angeles; he went everywhere, explored everything, and fucked anything that gave him ‘the look’. Vitya would even set up in some motels and just let anyone in, if they had cash in hand and a bottle of booze. He got into some hairier situations, too, when those very customers would catch him clearing out their wallet. He had been cut off from his father’s fortunes when he discovered his actions, so he needed to make money somehow!
It was sheer luck when he applied as a foreign student at Joie University. He really just needed a place to stay, running out of motels to sell his ‘services’ out of. He knew he’d have to get an actual job at some point, selecting an easy degree to go after. He did enjoy drawing while growing up, and left his lovely rock collection in Russia, so illustration and gemology seemed a perfect fit. If only he could kick the Russian accent, then maybe he could fit in a bit better.
STUDENT CENSUS SURVEY:
(Please answer the following questions IN CHARACTER. Responses can be as long or short as you see fit!)
What made you want to attend Joie University?
It is a secure campus with a good curriculum. The housing seems nice and the students friendly enough. I am looking for a place to plan roots, to get started in life, and I want it to be here. There are loads of opportunities here and I want to find them.
What are at least 3 positive or neutral and at least 3 negative traits that you believe you possess?
I’m intelligent. Beyond the classroom. I am good at reading people, what they want or need from me, which helps me understand my task. I know what I want, so I am very direct and leave little room for misinterpretation. I also have a morbid curiosity that can get me into trouble. All of these combined makes me somewhat abrasive, but that is their loss. And I am not very personable. I’ll do what needs to be done of me, but ask if I want to watch a rom-com with some popcorn, and I’m going to have to say no.
Which of your traits do you value most?
My directness. If I know what I want, and it isn’t what someone else wants, then I know I need to look elsewhere. I’m not going to waste time, which is better for both involved.
How can that trait benefit the University (or its student body) as a whole?
Being Russian, I’m a cultural novelty that many haven’t seen before. The fact you Americans have to wait to twenty one to drink was a major newsflash for me, so now I have to wait three more years when I already was drinking back home. The more I learn about America, the more others can learn about the motherland, beyond what some media figurehead tells us.
What do you hope to gain from your experience at JU?
The obvious answer to this is a degree, but anther answer is possible dual citizenship. I hope through this, I will be able to travel between Russia and America with more than just a student visa. I truly believe I can call America home, if given the chance.
What is a quote or song lyric that describes you?
“Do you realize I’m the man and I’m in my prime? And it’s my time, I swear to God I won’t waste no time. You ain’t worth a dime, no, you ain’t worth a dime. Still on my mind, you’re still on my mind.” – ‘Let Me Know (I Wonder Why Freestyle)’ by Juice Wrld

Death Race For Love - Juice Wrld
Tumblr media
Decent album overall and proves that Juice is a unique figure in this era of hip hop and as an artist in general. With rap, nowdays a lot of new artists rely heavily on the beat and even though their were some decent beats on the album, Juice relies on his own craft such as his content, bars and melody.
It is super long-winded because you know, gotta chase that bag, but for an album like this, I don’t see too much of a big issue. Also shouldn’t be surprised it’s this long coming from a rapper who can freestyle for an hour straight. Under the same breath I think Juice can do something better conceptually. It’s a bit too depressing and some lyrics are super questionable in terms of how crazy they sound.
Not a bad project, but it definitely gets draining after a while
6/10

The Kid LAROI
For my artist profile I decided to go a different route than usual. I really wanted to analyze and profile the artist The Kid LAROI. This artist in particular is a very different approach to typical artists. I was introduced to his music by my younger sister, and I played his latest album that was released a couple days ago and immediately fell in love with it. I thought that the album itself was a perfect mix between rap/hip hop and emotional slow music. It feels that achieving successful music while trying to combine slow and emotional and rap/hip hop is extremely difficult, but The Kid LAROI really killed it with this album. His latest album, “F*ck Love(SAVAGE)”, was the first time I really ever fully experienced his music and gave it a thorough listen. I am currently shuffling through this playlist right now while writing this because that is how much I like this album right now.

Born Charlton Howard, with the rapper alias The Kid LAROI, is a 17 year old rapper from Waterloo, New South Wales, Australia. Nowadays, LAROI lives in Los Angeles with his mother and younger brother, Austin. The Kid Laroi considered Juice WRLD his mentor and brother, unfortunately Juice WRLD passed away earlier this year, which is where The Kid LAROI’s music took more of an emotional angle. I really never thought there would be a day where I am listening to an artist that is younger than me, and having the music actually be good and impact me. He has only recently received a surplus of fandom, and gained country-wide popularity with his songs with Juice WRLD and his songs that appeared on the social media app TikTok. Being born in Australia, all of The Kid LAROI’s looked up to artists reside in the United States. According to newsroom on Spotify, “He was always listening to America’s adored exports (hip-hop and R&B) and was especially passionate about icons like Tupac, Erykah Badu, The Fugees, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West”(newsroomSpotify). He took a piece of all of his influencers and combined them into the artist he resides as today. A mixture of hip-hop and R&B with emotional lyrics and feelings.
Tumblr media
After the tragic death of his uncle in 2015, The Kid LAROI, really went into full drive with his music and began filling up pages and pages in his notebook. Once he started uploading his freestyles he began to get an audience. According to newsroom Spotify, “Now LA-based, The Kid LAROI has a staggering 11 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and his name adorms some of Spotify’s most popular playlists, RapCaviar, Pop Rising, Most Necessary, Internet People, Tear Drop, Hot Rhythmic, and more”(newsroomSpotify). LAROI has also made songs with many prominent and popular artists such as Marshmello, Lil Tjay, and Juice WRLD. LARIO developed a rapid fan base in Australia and translated it to an even bigger audience in the United States. The vulnerability and boldness of his music places him at the heart of young music audiences across the world.
Tumblr media
One of the largest aspects of The Kid LAROI that helps him bring his music to the next level is how much he cares about his fans and audience. Which is something that he can attribute to his mentor Juice WRLD. He touches upon this in an interview with someone from Spotify when he says “My biggest memories from Juice is how he always went all out for his fans no matter what while on tour. Regardless of how he was feeling that day or if he wasn’t having the best day, you couldn’t tell once he got onstage, and that’s how I want to be. You have to put the fans first because we wouldn’t be here without them. Working with him definitely expanded my creativity and increased my love for making music”(SpotifyNewsroom). This statement just goes to show that he has a good head on his shoulders. I really think he is going to do exceptionally well in the future, he has more potential than any other artist out right now. He is only 17 years old and is completely in control of his own destiny. He already has a monumental audience on Spotify and he can really take his music to the next level in the forthcoming years, as he will get better and improve over time by figuring out what styles and rhythms are perfect for him and his audience. All I can really say is if you enjoy rap, hip-hop, R&B, or even emotional music, look out because pretty soon The Kid LAROI will be found on your playlist.

Neon Drip - Neon Drip Mixtape, Vol.1
May 2020 - Neon Drip an artist with a focus on creating music that feels personal and innovative. His sound is highly energetic, yet it does not skimp when it comes to melodies and appealing hooks. Recently, he has been working to put some new music out and he just hit the scene with a brand new studio mixtape, aptly titled “Neon Drip, Vol. 1” The project sets the bar higher in terms of production excellent and exciting dynamics, going for a direct and forward-thinking sound that blurs the lines between golden-age warmth and modern clarity.
“Neon Drip, Vol.1” features 7 songs, and it offers about 16 minutes of pure and unadulterated hip-hop, with a modern twist.
The opening track is a song titled “Glittery,” and it sets the bar higher immediately due to the feel of this production. The introduction has a more atmospheric sound, with some haunting and darker synth tones, giving the mixtape a mellow feel. The 808-style beat kicks in right away, with a catchy hook and a unique lyrical style. The second song is titled “Bad to Me,” and it highlights the artist’s ability to combine catchy melodies with classic hip-hop feels. The beat has a heavier, yet more chill quality at the same time. The mixtape keeps sailing forward, and its third song is a stunning track titled “No Cap No Lie,” and it is probably my favorite song on this entire project. This one begins with a small melodic intro, and it later gets deeper into a classic trap-inspired beat with some atmospheric vocals, drenched in tasteful echo effects and other layers of sound. The song “Wasted” follows right after. This track has a slow-building intro, which starts off very quiet, but later gets into the song’s full bang loudness. The open, laid-back beat of this song, and the vocal melodies are some of the highlights on this mixtape. “Monster” is one of the catchiest songs on this mixtape, and if I personally had to pick a single song to appeal to a mainstream audience, it would definitely be this one! It has a bit of a Juice WLRD vibe, and it is a killer tune!
“Pink Slip” kicks off with an atmospheric intro and a slightly lo-fi beat, combining innovative melodies with a classic modern trap feel.
“Outlaw” is an excellent curtain closer, giving this mixtape a perfect ending with a trap-inspired tune that also has a lot of deeper atmospheric sounds.
One of the things that you will certainly notice is the high quality of this mixtape in terms of production. The beat are very layered, and it isn’t just your average copy-pasted beat. There are some killer drum sounds in here, and the atmospheric tones are also really spot-on, helping the drums and vocals to blend in and creating some unique aesthetics. It’s worth mentioning that even the vocals are produced really well. Many of the song features some cool reverb sounds and echo on the vocals, as well as some pitch manipulation effects making the sound even more interesting, and utterly balanced with the instrumental mix in every single track. Sonically, these tracks are endowed with a really deep low end and a crunchy mid-range that adds a lot of excitement to the music and helps the main melodies stand out. In addition to that, the treble range is smooth and bright, adding a lot of silky edge to the mix, and allowing the vocals to really pop to the forefront of the mix. Production aside, these songs are plain and simple good - Sure, a good recording helps, but if the good songwriting isn’t happening in the first place,a good production can only do so much. In this case, we have a perfect mix of both, and these excellent songs are combined with world-class sounds, going for a unique and successful feel.
You should definitely check this out if you are a fan of artists as diverse as Lil Wayne, Juice WRLD, Lil Uzi Vert, or Travis $cott, only to mention but a few. Neon Drip managed to strike gold with a killer mixtape, and if the first volume is this good, we really can’t wait to hear what’s next!

We also had the opportunity to ask the artist a few questions: keep reading to learn more!
I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and organic. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?
Answer: I don't have a standard procedure for creating my music and I never plan out any of my tracks in advance. I like to come up with everything on the spot, which creates that organic/personal vibe you're talking about. However, 9 times out of 10 I will start off my recording sessions by freestyling different melodies, sounds, and flows until something I like catches my ear. I currently don't produce my own beats but I am in the process of learning! I am always in search of beat producers who are looking to collaborate with me! Currently, my main focus is recording vocals and sound the engineering. I also engineer all of my vocals myself!
Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?
Answer: I have only performed my music one time at an open mic, but performing shows is definitely going to happen soon! I do have a little bit of stage fright but I am confident that I will get over it with practice! I definitely will be performing in the near future! This goal of mine is definitely one of the major drives that keeps me going and I couldn't be more excited to start performing soon!
If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?
Answer: Its hard for me to pick a single track that I think would make the best impression on a new listener because all of my songs are so different and unique. Everyone has their own taste so it makes it tough to pick out a single track. Personally, my top two favorite tracks on this project would be "Bad to Me" and "No Cap No Lie." These were the first two songs that I recorded where things started to really click for me and made me feel like I was really starting to establish as an artist!
What does it take to be “innovative” in music?
Answer: In my opinion, the best way to be as innovative as possible while creating music is to really think about your main reasons for creating the music in the first place. For me personally, It started out as a hobby, and it still is to this day, so for me, it's all about having fun! Music is also a therapeutic release for me which helps me get any unwanted thoughts/feelings off my chest. Overthinking is also one of the hardest challenges that I face in the studio. To overcome this I try to be "weird" while recording. This helps me think outside the box to keep my music organic. I want to create sounds and melodies that no one has ever heard before!
Any upcoming release or tour your way?
Answer: I have a new single that I will be releasing soon called "Race to the $tars" which will be on my new upcoming EP. I have No release date yet for this track as I am currently still working on this project!
Anywhere online where curious fans can listen to your music and find out more about you?
