How Much Do Systems Matter?
This post is directly inspired by the video "You shouldn't use DnD for narrative campaigns." by Questing Beast (aka Ben Milton) about the Polygon article "Worlds Beyond Number is teaching me things that no D&D book can" by Charlie Hall.
The video and article basically posit the following:
TTRPGs can use concretely designed procedures for certain types of challenges and scenarios while having much looser procedures for other types of challenges or scenarios
Just because a TTPRG has less thorough rules on a type of challenge or scenario than a different RPG tackling the same subject matter doesn't automatically make the former worse at being used for these scenarios than the latter
Depending on the preferences of the table, having a robust mechanical framework for one element of gameplay while lacking that for other types of gameplay may be preferrable than having robust mechanical frameworks for both
Having distinct game mechanics for narrative progression and character interactions is uncommon in D&D and derived games, but is very common in story games, e.g. most Powered by the Apocalypse games.
The Polygon article includes this quote by Worlds Beyond Number's Brennan Lee Mulligan: "[People say that] because D&D has so many combat mechanics, you are destined to tell combat stories. I fundamentally disagree. Combat is the part I’m the least interested in simulating through improvisational storytelling. So I need a game to do that for me, while I take care of emotions, relationships, character progression, because that shit is intuitive and I understand it well. I don’t intuitively understand how an arrow moves through a fictional airspace."
This intuitive knowledge on handling emotional beats, narrative, and characters of course stems from years of experience Brennan has as a writer, actor, improv teacher, comedian, camp counsellor, and professional TTRPG GM and player.
Using Ron Edwards design language (s. his 1999 essay "System Does Matter"), Brennan wants to run primarily narrativist games, while 5e would fit Edwards' idea of a Gamist system, i.e. one which involves the pursuit of "winning" against NPCs.
Now let's look at 5e: it's generally agreed upon that 5e is opinionated on combat, while also being vocal that exploration and social encounters, while less fleshed-out, are still part of its pillars alongside combat, meaning the game is still encouraging you to pursue these types of play.
Combat is a very fleshed-out series of systems. The action system is centered on combat, both in terms of time and types. Spellcasting is very distinct and allows for casting mostly offensive or defensive spells. Class progression usually focuses on improving one's combat capabilities.
Exploration and social interactions are much more bare-bones.
On the social side, a few more recent supplements have reintroduced the classic Attitude table present in earlier editions and which are a mainstay of the OSR community. Additionally the DMG spends merely three pages on how to run NPCs, mostly using fairly general advice instead of concrete game mechanics. Interaction between player characters is also barely discussed in 5e rules.
Exploration is similarly simple, mostly related to the omnipresent but simple skill system, as well as some relatively simple rules on weather, hazards, overland travel speed, and tracking rations.
5e's shift towards simplified rules for these two pillars, including simplifying the skill system into a mostly binary failure-success affair is a shift away from earlier D&D editions and some of its direct competitors, e.g. Pathfinder, Rolemaster, GURPS, and The Dark Eye, which often would involve subsystems for various aspects of social or exploratory encounters, s. Edwards' "System does Matter" essay and his point on simulationist games.
So if Brennan wants to run a narrative game where we can realiably use his knowledge of narratives and character writing to create a compelling story while having a set system as his backup to run situations where violence becomes a factor... Using a game like 5e is a decent choice.
Of course other systems might be even better for that. Shadowdark for example may just be the perfect fit for someone wanting to run a narrative game with occasional combat. The combat rules are thorough enough to cover the fundamentals. Sure, you may just need to get rid of real-time torches, the key mechanic which sets Shadowdark apart from other OSR games, but subtracting a mechanic, instead of modifying it, is a relatively uninvasive procedure.
Personally I too like it when my TTRPG, especially stuff intended for medium- or long-term play, doesn't touch social and narrative elements much mechanically.
Meanwhile games like Ironsworn and Heart - The City Below, which are much more narrative-focused, do have issues where their resolution mechanics clash with the fiction in ways that would pull be out of the story we're trying to tell. Heart has the issue with the Supplies resistance not being shared within the group, and Ironsworn's fulfillment of vows can be glacially slow (s. A. A. Voigt's "Ironsworn: A Narrative Dilemma" video essay).
Ultimately, it all comes down to preference. Personally, if I wanted to run a fantasy game with magic and a strong narrative (like Worlds Beyond Number), with the clear goal of not getting bogged down in combat or minis, I'd legit use Shadowdark as described above. If I knew I wanted to tell a specific type of story and knew of a game that was designed for these types of stories, I'd definitely give it a read and talk about it with my players before we adopt it.
However, I do implore folks to not Ship of Theseus a game with tons of homebrew and houserules so that it's no longer recognizable as its original game. If you ever feel compelled to do that, ask other players what systems might be a better fit for your needs.

assessments for Thinking through Practice by Marley Warren
Autobiography:
During the first term of thinking through practice we had to create autobiography about our lives and the first one we had to write about our lovers throughout our lives which was a new technique that I haven’t learnt before and proved to be a challenge on what to write as accessing my memories I found that I had multiple stories that I wanted to write to about and we had to wite about one in the end I talked about the first time I met my current lover as this memory stood out a lot to me, the style I wrote it was as if it was fairy tale as the memory almost felt like a fairy tail so it work really well for the autobiography, once I finished the group went around talking about their experiences and everyone had around the same theme as most was the theme betrayal and others had the theme of comedy such as with one of my classmates story how he stopped talking to a girl because is fell in love with a bus which was a bizarre story but it was the only few stories that actually stuck with as it was so bizarre and something you don’t hear every day. Their styles of writing it was as if they were talking to someone in the room one other person did something like me because they’ve never had a first lover before, so they made it up which is what we were also allowed to do but it was interesting to hear a story told that wasn’t however had spoken as if it was.
We were then told to edit on our story and put more detail into it which for I did put all that I knew into the story. I soon try to make up a few and make more the parts I made up more descriptive, I felt like this was an interesting exercise to enhance the story as I could of made entire new stories with the way I included the parts I made up.
I feel like the autobiography storytelling helped us all understand each other  little more as we found out stories about each other that if not for this part of the course I feel I would never know about my class or I would get to know class at all, it also help me understand how to use script work such as how to tell a interesting story as sometimes you need to look into your own past to create a lot of good sorties in theatre and in film such as with the plot of Indiana jones and the temple of doom written by George Lucas in that story he said that he was inspired by the divorce of his wife that led him to create the darkest story in the Indiana franchise.
Reflection:
Next subject we did was telling a story physically this is where things didn’t go well for me as I never really understood the meaning behind all the physical story telling in class as I felt it wasn’t explained as well as it should be. The first part of the physical story telling was to walk up and down the classroom in certain ways and concentrating on movement of the body and I just never really understood the meaning behind them and how it was mean to improve on our theatre skills, I understood the different ways of walking I think as it could help us become a different person in the way acting in theatre and other forms of acting for an example films, voice acting etc.
One I leant from the exercise was improvisation as we couldn’t vocally communicate with each other we had to know when it was the right moment to take the action of walking which proved to be very difficult as we all couldn’t look at each other nor have any sound cue to walk we just had to know when the time was right for all of us to take the first step to walk across one end of the classroom to the other side, this will help us in the future as in theatre work me and the group who is performing live will know how to non-verbally communicate and act on impulse to improvise scenes if thing go the way the performance isn’t mean to.
The last exercise we did was to make stories visually as our group created 5 scenes using all of us and make a story with each scene, at first we told a coherent story but we then swapped the scenes in different places changing our pace as we all had to quickly move into  the scene, and this taught me coordination with my group as we had to coordinate each scene and make sure the story we told made sense and wasn’t complicated for people to understand.
Process of making my performance:
For my assessment our group came up with a performance that would entail everything that we learnt in class and make into an interactable event as we planned to have the viewers sit down and try to make them participate however we wouldn’t give them a cue for them to participate they would have to know impulsively when they could join in and that main idea of the viewers impulsively join is one of the ideas I liked about the performance as we had try to make them join in but not make I too obvious they were meant to and the best part was it was an optional thing to do they didn’t have to join in but the option is there for them to join in. one other the others interesting parts of the performances was the locations set ups, we wanted the viewer to be brought on a journey and we didn’t limit ourselves to not only the university we went outside the university to tell stories and I lied the factor we branched out a lot more in location such as we went from underneath a stair case to outside a bus stop, a church and under a bridge so I leant about how to use locations and to not limit locations to just indoor use and there is so any locations we could of used a such as we could of gone into the church in one of the stories.
Another part I liked was asking random questions as we had 3 questions that we planned to ask and a 4th question that we had to come up with and again the worked with improvisation and impulses to ask these questions somewhere stranger than others however we came up with questions that made all the probationers think and got them all inverted with our performance as they all really enjoyed our performance
We also used our phones in the performance to immerse everyone as with the first story we told we all played the fire alarm sound effect on so that we could immerse everyone that we were in the story or with the finally story where we played dramatic music so that we get the feel of a emotional story about a person with their undying affection for Thomas the tank engine we really experiment with what technology and devices for our stories.

Final Evaluation (Assessment)
Counter Culture
As we had multiple projects were meant to be completed in the same time, we couldn't manage to focus on both projects. Causing confusion and sense of time, the quality of outcome wasn't ideal as we move forward to the deadline for projects
1 Quality
As a lack of focus was given along the project, quality checks were not done enough. This caused a heavy amount of dissatisfaction on the project yet the time wasn't enough to improve the outcomes.
2 Record
During the life action recording, two members for both recording, instructing, microphone holder and the actor was seriously not enough. Causing a lot of scenes being deleted as more problems were observed during record.
3 Sound Quality
The sound of the ingredients and production progress was important for the project, however accidents always happens unexpected. After records were done and all ingredients were used, we have observed on the volume ration of sound during record. Which a great amount of unwanted sounds were covering the important ones, yet nothing could be done as rerun was not an option during filming.
4 Measure wasn't done during production
While food were slowly being produced, the ratio of food colouring and the dough was not measured, resulting in a really awful bright colour was all over the dough. This heavily damaged the appearance of the food.
5 Not enough practice was done
As we move into video editing and filming, it was clear that practice wasn't done and resulting in a complex mess during production. Although fix and evaluate could be done. However, the lack of experience had me down as a lot of problem wasn't fixed due to my knowledge didn't include the method of fixing that problems.
6 Foolish Ideas
As dangos were a type of dough produced outcome but water boiled. Dough itself was a large problem during filming, as attempting to make dough looks great in the camera. It requires a large amount of expert skills, which wasn't considered during planning. Resulting in a lot of scenes being cut off as it was too awful to look at.
7 Lack of sense in situational BGM
Video editing was also a trouble mess during completing, without any experience on heavy video editing. I didn't know what type of background music shall be used and timing was a great problem, with this single factor from multiples. It consumed me a visible amount of time as I tried to put things together.
8 Not enough practice in 2D drawing
With the sense on how the video would be made. GAL game typed film was decided to improvise the amount of skills I could obtain to build up my portfolio. However, no understanding on my current skill set was done. Resulting in the lack of quality on content I could produce, and causing time wasted on basic corrections.
9 Not enough inspiration were picked and applied in hand
Inspirations and ideas are unlimited from research and observation. However, not all of them were relatable and useful in terms of structure building. Not only that, with a lot of unused of them would only stuck my mind to create as these inspirations and ideas would still stay in mind, causing jam in creating new ones.
10 Too many fresh production causing unstable and relating content without following else works
It is always great to create fresh ideas and layout or method. However, it would only create unstable structure as we move forward without a certain amount of skills. In order to entertain viewers, parts and contents should be holding together and supporting each other. But they were to separated in term of direction would only cause confusion and hatters.
11 Vocal
Vocal were part of the plan during ideas building, yet time didn't give me a change to test out the vocal. As if vocal is included, there would be a lot to considered like tuning, background noise, white noise, matching between music and vocal timing. I believe vocal is also another great factor to success but with slight mistakes, it could bring the video down. And here I would only had to leave it behind for future experiment.
12 SoundEffects
During vocal and background music or even the subtitle, sound effects could have upgrade the video to another level. However, as mentioned it would require a lot of skills to put them together. It was basically take or full lose.
13 Video Colour Gradient
As an animator, colour gradient was another big problem as we move forward. According to the social media, almost 70 percent of images and videos were amplified with colour gradient. And without this knowledge, my video was incomplete without the colour gradient and all raw colour would only be shown on the screen as it plays through.
14 Ration between background items and character
Gal game has great factors like main character, subtitle and background. In production, the background image was messed up due to lack of skill and as well as character. Ending in uncomforted ratio to be seen during playback.
15 Misuse on software functions
During production, clip paint studio was chosen to draw 2D works, although I had made good use on it's 3D object on 2D draw pad function. Yet overall, I underestimated it's real values like a wild range of effect and brushes. Layer masking was layer effect was the best tool on 2D drawings but none of them where touched due to lack of knowledge on their functions.
Overall
After all, the video was acceptable with the relaxing background music and character. And with the only single skill I know in 2D drawing which is shading helped a lot to improve the outcome. But what could be learnt from it would be to understand my skill set and fix my mindset before any project as trash ideas that comes from a wrong mindset would only increase the work flow and problems. After that, it would only to be better management ratio between content and annotating the contents. As without understanding what was made within contents would only cause more unwanted problems and time wasted.

Hey, I really enjoyed your KPOP headcanons (the Gosho Girls desperately need more content like this since everyone just focuses on the boys)! I came up with some myself for Kazuha (because I love her) and you said you were fine with other people adding on so here they are. This is... kind a lot so it might be super long... Maybe you could copy paste this into a post if publishing the ask is too hard? I'm not sure if you'll agree, but I hope at least some of them are good enough for you to add to your headcanons haha
- Kazuha seems like someone who greatly values authenticity and honesty (she says what she means and honestly thinks after all). So I think she would be the type to always sing live and refuse to lip sync, even if her singing is not 100% perfect. She would rather make mistakes and have flaws than to not actually sing/fake it. To her, this is what makes it a true live - something where anything can happen and something can potentially go wrong
- Despite this, she is still upset at herself if she makes mistakes and will try to train harder to overcome them
- As a main vocalist, her technique is amazing, obviously, but she is a performance > technique (or performer > technician) type of person and she would sacrifice technique for performance value if need be (though obviously she would try for both)
- Similarly, I don't think she would like her voice to be over-edited (or with many effects) and she would prefer to keep it mostly raw, since that is more authentic and conveys her emotions and passion more (so keeping in things like breaths)
- Which leads me to the next thing. Kazuha would never become an idol if she wasn't completely serious, enthusiastic and passionate about music and performing (mostly singing). So her performances are always full of passion and rawness and you can tell she really enjoys performing and doesn't view it as a chore.
- Kazuha is an amazing performer with lots of stage presence. She's super expressive (and emotional) on stage and that shows in her dancing, singing and expressions. Although she's good at synchronising with people (aikido requires harmony after all), she adds a lot of little flairs that show her individuality (and slight improvisation rather than always completely following all the choreography), and sometimes she does this too much that it may slightly clash with/disrupt the synchronisation or overall harmony of the performance
- Despite this, I think she is still overall serious on stage/when performing, and doesn't give out too much fanservice since she's completely invested in the performance and focused on putting her absolute all into it.
- In fact, sometimes she can get too into it and be a bit too intense about performing that she can exhaust herself when practising. She has probably fainted from practising too much and losing track of time (see movie 21 with karuta). This is especially the case if she does not think she is good enough at a particular thing. She will keep practising that nonstop until she's satisfied, and will tend to start panicking if she doesn't improve to the level she wants. She tends to do less well when stressed like this.
- Japanese idols tend to have more of an emphasis on stage presence and interacting with the audience, and I think it's the same with Kazuha. She really enjoys concerts (over music/award shows) because she gets to interact more with the audience, and perform more /for/ the audience. She likes seeing the impact her singing has on people.
- I think her brand of beauty would be more natural (like in canon) so her stylists usually don't do /too/ much and she usually looks similar between performances and comebacks (eg, she usually doesn't drastically cut or dye her hair)
- She almost always wears her hair in a ponytail (with a ribbon) because it's an iconic look for her.
- When she doesn't have her hair in a ponytail, she always still manages to incorporate a ribbon somewhere because ribbons are /special/ to Kazuha ok (and are probably all treasured gifts from people
- I would say her singing style focuses on good emotional execution (she makes people Feel things ok) and high belting/power vocals while still maintaining good technique.
- Dancing? Pretty good but not as good as Ran, obviously. She seems to be the type to make up for any flaws in technique and strength (like how aikido's less strength-based) using passion. And she's the main vocalist so she usually doesn't get hard dance parts so that she can sing (esp since she sings live). And she'll sacrifice her dancing for her singing if need be.
- She's a fast learner though, so she learns lyrics and choreography pretty fast.
- In livestreams, she sings a lot and will allow people to request songs for her to sing acapella
- Probably one of the first to make a solo debut (if she wants) because her singing abilities allows her to carry entire songs by herself. Her songs will be very vocals-focused rather than dance-focused. Does a bunch of collabs as a solo artist too
- Covers a lot of Japanese songs, including traditional Japanese songs because her family is pretty traditional (and she fits that theme). In fact, she may be skilled in enka and traditional Japanese folk singing (kind of like the caller in karuta - like if you remember in movie 21, there's someone that kind of sings out the poems)
- Kazuha acts really authentically. She doesn't put on a stage persona or act differently just because she's a celebrity (she can't anyway, even if she tried. She would probably break character really easily)
- Probably cries at concerts all the time
- Probably best at cuter and fresher concepts, but she can also be powerful
- Puts so much emotion into her singing (especially with emotional songs) that sometimes she herself can become overwhelmed with them. She has probably broken down or started crying while performing a particular emotional song.
- A theatre (takarazuka) fan! So you better believe that she incorporates musical theatre techniques into her singing and performing.
YES YES YES AND YES! I honestly had all these headcanons as well, but I didn’t post them because I didn’t have more headcanons for the other girls and it wouldn’t be fair to give Kazuha more.

Watching this short clip of newest music video from Wataru Hatano (Badd’s VA), made me thinking:
What most people don’t know yet is that Badd can actually sings beautifully.
Garou discovered this trivial fact when he heard Badd singing in the shower. His voice range is also good: Badd could do from lullaby or mellow-sounded songs to the screamo metal songs.
Badd usually does the lullaby singing whenever there’s thunderstorm at their place and Zenko was afraid to sleep alone, hence Badd calming Zenko down and made her feels safe with his singing. Garou also likes to lie beside Badd when he was lullabying Zenko and couldn’t help but loving his soothing voice so much.
The latter only when he got frustated after finishing annoying missions, like being snobbish executive’s bodyguard or encountering troublesome monsters. It was hilarious everytime Badd does that kind of screamo singing, Garou was wondering if they should just forming a rock or metal band together instead of doing heroes’ duty.
One time he sings Amai Mask’s song because he always (or forced to) listening Zenko’s favorite playlist on daily basis. Garou casually commented, “You sure do a much better job than him, babe!” while giving him a genuine adoring smile. Badd took it as the most flattering praise from Garou as he felt encouraged. So from that day on, he would be singing more around Garou, as it could improve their mood: Badd doing his secret hobby more freely without being judged and Garou enjoying his boyfriend’s beautiful voice to the fullest.
Imagine Garou decided to join Badd at singing duets when they have shower together, lmao. Truly chaotic and hilarious but still sounds beautiful.
Then at some point, there was a rather big television studio inviting S-Class heroes to be the guests for their new summer program. The plan was originally only having a talkshow night along with usual interviews, but the studio asking someone among S-Class heroes to be a volunteer singer for a short promotional music video clip.
All of them agreed to attend the talkshow night, but nobody dared to volunteer as a singer. Either too shy/embarassed that they couldn’t sing, have performance anxiety, or don’t like singing at all. Suddenly Garou suggested that Badd would do it since he got a nice voice and wonderful performance acts. Which resulted in Badd being combusted immediately and spluttered on why did Garou exposed his secret ability.
Garou said he wanted people to appreciate him and his skill, that Badd also has good talent beside being a courageous hero. Also, why not seeing the softer side of Metal Bat doing adorable singing performance on TV?
Badd wont admit it but Garou has a real good point, also felt happy that Garou always being a very supportive boyfriend to him. Thus it was decided that Badd would be the volunteer, saving all the S-Class heroes’ face from ruining the genuine offering.
Before the recording days, the TV program gave Badd the script for video performance, the song lyrics, and the demo song sample from the producer. It has summer-vibe theme, coincidentally also suits perfectly to Badd’s real image as a summer boy. Badd thought the song was actually pretty cute and high-spirited, too. He was sure he could do it easily with some improvisation acting, based on what he feels about the song lyrics.
Badd only needed 2 days (in his sparetime after daily hero patrol) to memorize the song and singing it perfectly. Of course Garou never missed to watch Badd’s practices at home or at the studio, as he always accompanied Badd on each scheduled time.
The recording day has come, imagine Badd’s performance for the song was like in the video above, just like what Wataru Hatano did.. 🎤🎶🌻☀
Everyone was very satisfied with Badd’s surprisingly skillful singing performance, including Garou who was so proud of him from outside recording room. He immediately gave Badd standing ovation on the spot, then hugging him tightly and kissing him passionately once Badd finished the recording session in front of people. PDA be damned Garou just wanted to appreciate his smol amazing lover.
The short music video was officially aired during the talkshow night, shocking both the whole audiences at the studio (including the S-Class heroes) or audiences from home who watched the live TV program (like Zenko). It was surprisingly also got so many views and likes when the video was uploaded at Ytube, not to mention being shared a lot on multiple social medias. Until Badd’s MV become the trending topic for 2 weeks straight, beating Amai Mask’s own newly released MV at that month.
People have been asking Badd if he would ever consider a singing career outside his current job. Badd answered he was actually feel comfortable and satisfied working as an S-Class hero. That no matter how hard and dangerous it seems, he still proud of his job. It’s what he means to be: saving people’s life. So, the answer is a Big No.
Badd only consider singing as his hobby, not his job. Besides, his singing voice is only reserved for his special people in his heart: Zenko and Garou. Only both of them who get free pass on enjoying his voice. Badd ended his public speech by giving a lingering soft kiss on Garou’s cheek and tender yet bright smile, saying that he’s very grateful for having such a supportive boyfriend on his side..

L4D(2) Actor AU
This is a (not complete) list of headcanons for the Actor AU me and my bro came up with during our Expert runs and running extremely low on morale. We created this as a sort of ‘happy’ AU which would also give some room to our own ideas, so some of this stuff below may only slightly be related to original. We understand.

Overall setting
The Left 4 Dead universe itself is a series of 90-min movies divided into first and second season, L4D1 and L4D2 respectively. This list will further refer to them as S1 and S2;
L4D is a series about, of course, zombie apocalypse, but teamwork and forming bonds between people are brought to spotlight. Both seasons consist of episodes where four Survivors try to find a solid ground and safety with every episode ending on a cheerful note but every next one starting with the cheerfulness destroyed. The episodes share their names and events with Campaigns;
Originally, L4D was created by a team of enthusiasts, consisting of friends, families and family friends, so they are all very immersed in process and really giving their best. Their collective is also the reason their funding isn’t very high and they’re mostly using their own equipment and props; this makes the series look less expensive and polished but retains the atmosphere and the main goal: to show people growing warmer to each other and learning to stick together;
The actors’ names are mostly created by combining the face model’s first name and the voice actor’s last name, though some other versions do take place (see S1 and S2);
The safehouse graffitis are inspired by the fans’ responses from forums and contests, so it’s some sort of communicating with audience through screenplay;
The Third Strike, more commonly known as Black and White Mode which occures after second incapacitation, was firstly discovered as a camera malfunction but then the team liked it so much that they decided to leave it as a feature and add the heartbeat effect and stuff;
Main plot line consists solely of canon Campaigns (that means it doesn’t include Last Stand and Cold Stream) but there were also suggestions to shot additional episodes - the Mutations. After S1 success, the authors posted their ideas on different ‘modes’ and fans added theirs as well and thus during S2 some more episodes were made using, for example, a male synchronized swimming team to create the Hunting Party mutation. The original Hunter actor also participated and the swimmers required to copy his behavior; they did it so well that sometimes the whole Survivor team was being overwhelmed once they began the take;
There are no stuntmen on board so every fighting scene is shot with original actors. When it requires to shove someone off with a weapon (e.g. Zoey shoving a Hunter off Louis in the L4D1 intro), after the take actors always ask each other whether they hit too hard, should they improve the movements etc. Different actors have different range so it’s a tricky thing to cooperate but they still manage (I’ll come back to this topic in L4D2 section);
Most Infected, especially Special Infected encounters are improvised, bringing more life and realism to the Survivors’ response. The Hunter is responsible for a fair share of their shock as they noticed him stuck at a saferoom ceiling only after a while (this is a reference to the glitches that allow the Hunter to get stuck under the roof in Versus);
There was a suggestion to run a Kickstarter campaign to gather money for a fanservice episode especially for shippers. While it was most likely a joke from actors who didn’t mind shipping, it’s still a suggestion and not in work.
L4D (Season 1)
Zoey shares the zombie movie obsession with her actress; Sonja was the most familiar with the topic among original team and provided a lot of help with setting up the scene, behaviour writing etc. Along with Louis and Boomer actors, she was the creator of original idea and can consider herself a founder of the series. She is also older than Zoey as a character, being already in her 25s while Zoey is a college student;
The original Boomer actor was a CGI specialist and offered his skills for post-processing while also playing an Infected role. He came up with the idea of a Boomer Infected himself and suggested his large physique to do the role with a little touch of computer graphics and makeup;
While discussing the major characters and personalities worth including, Zoey’s actress instantly remembered her neighbor, the big buffy tattooed guy who was her childhood friend, worked as a driver and spent his weekends with his favorite bike. She figured that it’s a nice image to have in a zombie apocalypse setting, and thus Francis’ actor made it to the set;
When it came to the image of a war veteran refusing to give in to monsters, Zoey’s actress was also the one to suggest another person to fill up the space: her father. He was younger than Bill was written to be but did the impersonating well. He’s got an overall friendly but bickering attitude towards Francis’ actor so most of lines written for Bill and Francis interaction were the ones actors remembered from their own conversations, slightly exaggerated;
Zoey’s actress and Louis’ actor were co-workers for several years and bonded over their mutual interest to zombie theme and shooting. She foud out that Sean attended a shooting range in his spare time and asked him to take her out too; thus she both found out he aces in ambidextrous shooting and got him to teach her how to wield a hunting rifle. The weapon preferences were carried over to respective characters;
Hunter’s actor became a surprise for the team as Francis’ actor brought him over saying that the guy’s got a fantastic voice (and a music band) and physique to make some badass new Infected for them. They got him to voice the crowd extras of common Infected but also came up with an idea of shrieking hooded parkour bastard to rip someone’s guts out, thus creating the Hunter as another Special Infected;
As the next Special Infected concept came out of the shadows - a lanky coughing tongue-twisting zombie who would grab the Survivors and restrict them, Hunter’s actor brought another person to the set. It was his music band co-participant who did drums and back vocals and also had an ability to eject the most horrible coughing sound out of his throat while being (seemingly) healthy. He took over the role of a Smoker;
Hunter’s actor is named Mike after Mike Patton, the voice actor for Infected and SI like Hunter and Smoker. Smoker’s actor is named Mike too but the fact that he plays drums and does back vocals is actually a reference to Faith No More, the band where Patton actually does vocals and Mike Bordin does what Smoker’s actor does. It sounds complicated but originally the idea of Hunter and Smoker actors sharing a name came from Patton voicing them both, and then I found out about the band and two Mikes present so... that was a weird but happy coincidence;
The fact stated above was the reason the team came up with nicknames just for two Mikes on the set - Hoodie and Tongue respectively. The tradition was carried over to S2 where the new Hunter actor would receive a patronizing nickname Kid from Survivors (see S2)
Of all Infected actors, Hunter’s actor was the least level-headed and even Francis’ actor sometimes doubted his past decision to bring him in. Nevertheless, Hoodie’s cheerful attitude and energy helped the collective stay positive and fuelled during especially hard days. It also brought out the less lethargic and melancholic part of Tongue and made him more lively about things;
Despite Hoodie being the Endless Energy Core which people tended to adore, he was still in a lousy relationship with Witch’s actress (her name, by the way, is different from the voice actress - it’s Rose). He kept a charmer’s attitude towards her even though she was a married woman; Rose tended to be neutral or mostly positive towards most colleagues but this behavior pissed her off big time, leading to Hoodie being injured by her stage costume claws after she punched him in the face for a really bad dating joke. Hoodie toned it down afterwards but their relationship didn’t improve much up until the end;
Witch’s actress is keen on baking and sometimes brings some to the filming set;
Since the budget was comparatively low, the team couldn’t afford a lot of crowd extras so they hired a group of people to then create an image of a Horde attacking by using CGI. That’s why there’s so much repeating common Infected on-screen;
The first season included all L4D1 original Campaigns, leaving The Sacrifice out as it was added later in a DLC. As S2 came into development stage, the team wanted to add an episode with the old Survivors team but Bill’s actor was unavailable at the time and was overall not hot with the idea of shooting movies anymore; so eventually they plotted the episode (The Passing campaign) to feature Bill being dead. The fans were shocked to find it out and demanded to know what exactly happened, thus leading to actually shooting The Sacrifice as a bonus episode to S1 (and requiring Bill’s actor to come back despite his attitude).
L4D2 (Season 2)
The collective decided to take a sharp turn on the new Survivors and create them being unacquainted and sort of separated at the start but growing closer as time passes by. The idea of S1 Survivors being almost a family to each other sounded great and played along just right but the team wanted to delve deeper into relationship problems and also have a change of scenery - and so they did;
The Infected team for S2 still consisted of some old faces (Boomer, Tank and Witch) but some had to leave the set for the time being and were unable to rehearse the roles, this being Hunter and Smoker actors. They got into music harder than zombie movies and planned to go on a tour so they could only leave their old Infected sounds as a legacy;
The new Smoker actor was a treasure Coach’s actor brought to the set. Since Coach was in fact a college coach, he kept a close eye on some problematic students under his wing and picked out the one he’d considered perfect and at the same time worth looking after. The guy was recovering from compulsory drug treatment and had some ugly scars all over his arms, making him an easier candidate for makeup;
Hoodie, on his part, brought a replacement on his own, and it was his brother - four years younger, even more insanely into parkour and a huge fan of L4D series, he made a perfect new Hunter. Despite being only a few years younger than Hoodie, he instantly became treated like a restless constant-questioner child, a literal piece of sunshine on the set, so the team came to call him just Kid. He adjusted to the nickname after a couple of weeks, though being seriously surprised at it at the start;
The actors of Ellis, Jockey and Charger all come from one family, being two sons and a father. Coach suggested the family as well, being their close friend for many years and pointing out Ellis’ actor appearance being something close to the laid-back mechanic they wanted for the new Survivors team;
Although fluently speaking in a Southern accent, Ellis’ actor isn’t very fond of it as he tried to get rid of it and move to a different state; the role obliged him to use the accent again though and it wasn’t hard to recreate, but he still didn’t take pride in it and was mostly annoyed with it and Nick’s jokes written in script;
Ellis’ actor is also the one more frequently complaining about amount of money the actors receive for their work on set. Their funding increased a bit since S1′s popularity strike but still;
Most of Ellis’ stories were written based on actual on-set incidents, usually featuring Nick’s actor (see below);
Nick’s actor, Taymour, is married to Witch’s actress and is a big fan of her performance in S1. When she heard the idea of having a snarky self-centered ladies’ man in the new Survivors team, she immediately knew who’d handle the role at his best. She also rehearsed the role of Witch just to make sure nothing bad happens to her husband on-set (also see below);
Nick’s actor suffers from constant bad luck incidents. He can accidentally break or twist something without serious effort; he’s also allergic to artificial blood and he is the reason the filming set actually features painkillers and functioning adrenaline shots. Despite all that, he’s got a positive attitude about bad luck and got used to being in a state of constant non-obvious danger, unlike others who geniunely worry about his well-being and fear that one day an accidental injury might end him once and for all;
This trait is also the reason Nick’s line “Can’t you see I’m limping here?” made it into the script - it was improvised after Nick’s actor badly hit his leg and was the last to make it to a saferoom during a take. The team liked it and decided to leave it in;
Nick’s actor treats his role with all respect and doesn’t consider it a small one despite the not so large fee. He’s also a complete opposite to the character, being a very friendly and kind-hearted guy to everyone on set; he can however switch back to his script personality with startling speed and it scared some of the new actors at first. Despite playing an asshole which is very different from real him, Nick’s actor enjoys it a lot and overall finds great joy in working with the team and bringing them together;
Bringing back the topic of being gentle to each other, Nick’s actor takes great care when it’s required to hit or shove someone in the take, keeping it mildest possible, unlike for example Ellis’ actor who can smash you in the face without a second thought;
Nick’s actor and Witch’s actress keep their loving attitude on set as well, sometimes making it hard to shoot scenes featuring a Witch killing; as they were shooting the Witch Bride scene where the same actress took place but had a different outfit and makeup, they ruined several takes by driving the dialogue in unwanted directions, e.g. “Ellis, go kiss the bride! No wait, I’ll do that myself” or “N: Sounds like my ex-wife... W: I still AM your wife, darling! >:C”;
With her husband on stage, Witch’s actress is probably closest to her role - she will tear apart anyone who dares to hit on Nick’s actor or mean any harm to him (as if his own harming isn’t enough...). The only one she’d go loose is Ellis’ actor, being an old close friend;
Ellis’ actor was the one who introduced Nick’s actor to his future wife. They’ve actually been close friends since the university and Ellis’ actor was among those who obviously saw Nick’s actor and Rose being in love but completely oblivious to it. Ellis’ actor is still kinda jealous that she took his best friend away and they can’t hang out anymore like they used to, but they get quite a lot of time on set so he’s less irritated about that;
Nick’s actor is especially supportive towards Rochelle’s actress, Shanola. She feels self-conscious because of her character’s rating being lower than expected and blames it on her performance, but Taymour keeps reassuring her that she’s doing amazing. Rochelle’s actress is also the one least accustomed to shooting a weapon and handling violence of any kind so it was hard for her to get her head into action. With the team fully supporting her, the progress sped up tremendously;
Ellis’ actor’s name is Jesy and he gets salty about people misspelling it or mistaking it for a female name. It was the inspiration to include the “El kinda sounds like a girl’s name” part of Ellis’ dialogue;
The team is overall friendly towards shipping dynamics in the series’ fandom, with the only one explicitly stating otherwise being Ellis’ actor. He’s espeicially upset with Nellis ship as people started shipping actors over it too; he stated multiple times that he and Nick’s actor have been best friends for so long that it’s simply wrong to imply any romantic and/or sexual relationship between them. He once stated in an interview that he’d rather believe an Ellis/Hunter ship and the fandom exploded with it on the next day, much to the actor’s chagrin. The Hunter’s actor, or Kid, however, wasn’t that upset and supported the idea. The team made no confirmation to any ships yet;
Nick’s actor is neutral to most ships including Nellis and doesn’t see why his friend is so angry about it. His personal favorites are Nick/Witch for obvious reasons and Nick/Hunter for less obvious reasons that he doesn’t state. He jokingly suggests Jesy from time to time to start a Kickstarter campaign for a Nellis-centered episode; it’s still unknown whether they’ll take it serious one day.

Im kinda obsessed with I-Land right now. I love 23 boys and if possible i would like them all to debut but the elimination is in 30 minutes so im going to post my top 12 picks before it airs (kind of in order, kind of not, im biased, this is based on an unsure mixture of skill and personality, could change but most likely not):
1. Sunoo- BITCH!!! WTH!!! I JUST LOOK AT HIM AND MY SEROTONIN LEVELS BURST THROUGH THE ROOF!! He is a puppy!! He is amazing. If you didnt know anyone yet and you put all 23 boys in a line up. He will draw your attention with his sunshine smile :)))) he is so heartwarming. Most people be like "i have no filter" but they just be mean, but this guy is different, he literally has no ability to hide what he thinks but it never comes off as anything negative. He says "Me! I can do it!" but it's just endearing and never comes across as trying to show off. He says "there was a little bit of friction" and when the members look at himshocked, he looks at them shocked too.... theres no dull moment when he's in frame. It's so amazing how pure a person can be. But know that i am not just rooting for personality but for talent. his voice... His Voice!!! Vocally geonu and heeseung really slayed the butterfly performance but if you ask me, "save me" had a more emotional attack. His facial expression is just brimming of feelings. His voice is so raw. Also You know that part in save me where he transitions from head voice into chest voice really smooth??? You'll know what im saying if you see it. thats so fucking satisfying that i had to replay it so much. I definitely replayed the save me performance more times honeslty. And the way he dances!!! It might not be That refined yet but that's the charm... it's so raw and full of emotions... so like him. I can see myself stanning this group long term if he debuts with them.
2. Jungwon- tf i love this boy so much. his visuals already stood out to me when they were entering i-land, then his voice stood out to me in the first challenge... he did that hard ass choreography without any audible changes to his voice that i had to rewind that multiple times (more than the editor already did) then the moment i saw him dance the center in episode 4??? BOY???? BOY!!!! that was my breaking point... i can't believe im saying this about men but i already knew i would die for him... plus he is so sweet :((( his eyes are just so naturally cute but i was so shocked in the last challenge when he was able to pull off that fierce ass look.... i am devastated... im about the same age but my parental instincts are at work here. plus SPOILER ALERT to those who plan to watch he won first place in both the first and last challenge can everybody say jungwon ace
3. Geonu- my feelings for him are much like jungwon :((( except theres more parental instincts... and i say this despite being younger than him but whatever age is just a vibe... HE IS SO LIDDOL :((( i want to be his mom :(( at first, personality wise, it's hard to notice him bc he's a little calm and laidback... but its the little things that draw you to him :((( his glasses and hoodies just seem a little bit big on him and that just makes me smile for some reason... he cries silently when people are sent to the ground and he gets along well with the people... i noticed him first together with jungwon in the first i land challenge because they had the most stable performance. but i've never been more attached to him than when he sang butterfly (favorite bts song anyone??)... i honestly thought they could debut then and there and i wouldnt bat an eye... also it's so funny that the one thing i identified him with during the early episodes was the fact that whenever the camera pans to him, he just has the dead eye stare and parted lips (think: pokerface but confused) especially with the huge ass glasses but in the end the poker face thing that stuck to me became the thing that worked against him i cri
4. Jay- hold on folks this is going to be a long one. Jay has such a powerful personality that at first made me hesitant about liking him... idk he just seemed like the guy i would not vibe with in real life, but the longer time passed, the more he became one of my favorites and i root for him now like crazy. at first it was funny when they kept rejecting him for the vocal parts, but the more it went on, i was so sure that if it was me, i would have cried and dropped then and there, but it was so amazing watching him push through that and he didnt even lie about how he felt. his unique determination is such a breath of fresh air, a little heartwarming and oh so inspiring. i honestly learned a lot from just watching him. the time he went to the ground was so crucial to his development as a person, leader and performer. it was so mindblowing when he became the leader at the ground and even adapted heeseung's teaching methods. you know that meme "improvise, adapt, overcome?" he is the exact personification of that. what i loved about him the most is that even with his steely determination, he didnt enforce or project that on the other grounders, he just shared it with them. he understands when they need rest, encouragement or massages. he was such a caring leader. Skill wise- i can't say anything. He already proved himself so many times. Great dancer and potential vocalist. The mnet specials also show how much sweeter he is than the show shows him to be. He takes care of everyone, and has more of mother duck than street gang vibes (and he knows how to cook!!). And at the end, while he seems to be mostly self- oriented about debuting, he ends up spending most of his time teaching others and helping them improve. I just love him. Debut Jay 2k20!!!
5. Sunghoon- tf this guy is so cool and laidback that i didnt even pay much attention to him during the early parts but he just keeps crawling into my heart because so many members love him so damn much??? and he just goes along with them?? they want me to do triple axel while average people can't even do a single axel on a trampoline?? ok imma give them a double axel tho. jake is challenging me to arm flexing? yeah why not? k wants me to dance?? yeah lemme just spin 50 times. jay wants to shower together?? weird but im not strongly against the idea. ej wants to scare people? count me in. someone needs a hand to hold?? ok here's my warm hand to the rescue... everyone just wants to be his friend that he birthed my favorite sunoo scene "im cuter than him [jake]" and he was just like "yeah ok i guess so" sksjsk sunoo is that how you ask someone to be your friend jshdk??? and can i just say? as a figure skating fan, he has automatic +52536 points... and when the judges said he's the most natural performer out of them??? i vibed with that hard.. he dances well so naturally and he takes your attention without even seeming like he's trying to. that dance performance with k and jungwon?? i thought at first that his energy wouldnt catch up but damn boy my eyes were just trackingnhim the entire time unintentionallu that i had to rewind and he was just as great as all of them... with the additional benefit of being a stunt boy!! and though it might seem effortless, we saw that he practiced so hard for it. overall a 100/100 boy with a naturally charismatic personality that bleeds into his performance... as a fellow 02 liner i would also like to apply as his bestfriend thank you
6. Heesung- what can i say except he's a perfect boy ok thats it why are you still reading... jk... ok lets talk about him... skill wise?? I cried during the butterfly performance. i marvel at his vocal stability. his voice is so crystal clear. his dancing is so clean. his skills are superb but most of all, theyre already so refined. there's nothing more i could ask for. personaloty wise... i also have a lot to say... despite his celebrity status, it's awesome how he can make the other trainees comfortable with him. he's kind and soft and lovely.
but because i am me, i have to overanalyze people so idk skip this if you dont like that. for someone who's experienced being an academic achiever... i sure do vibe with his personality a lot... you know when there's a group activity and you're so sure you can lead it well but you don't want to? half because you dont want to come off as a show off and half bc you genuinely still have self-doubts, and you're scared of falling short of expectations. Also, you feel that if it all fails, you'll be responsible so you have to feel that everyone approves you before you can take leadership and show your entire thing. And the moment you feel validated and take the reins, you start unconsciously projecting your perfectionist attitude on people??? yeah... i love that despite being an almost perfect person he still has issues most people can find relatable and that, in addition to the talent makes me want to root from him. (im also going to take a stab and guess that his mbti is probs ixxp) i'll be honest tho, because its like 100 percent sure now that he'll debut, im not super attached to him??? i love him tho but he's just not in any danger so i can just let my support for him chill. i think amidst this, bc most of the trainees depend a lot on him, i mostly hope for him to take care of his mental health
7. Daniel- awww danielll... i went into i-land not knowing anyone's ages so i had a brief whiplash feeling when someone said daniel is 15... it's because he's so emotionally mature?? like he's such a supportive and caring person that it barely struck me the that he might be the youngest?? he already caught my attention when they performed "any song" bc they just seemed like they were having fun and doing their best without the pressure of whether they would win ir not, and for me that attitude is something you'd see from more experienced performers. and during the second ep when he just felt the need to comfort everyone bc he's got such a high score?? i loved that an i was so bummed out when they eliminated him. the save me performance was definitely a cherry on top that i just had to love him more than i already do... he may be young but he's as ready to debut as everyone else.

Jake- jake is just one of the people who showcased so much growth between ep 1 and ep 2. he already had the right attitude when they performed crown and he just had to improve skills and stage presence, and improved he did. despite being one of the trainees with the shortest training time, he was the one teaching the others by the end it just supports my theory that he might have been an ace as well if he just had the same amount of training as everyone else. im also truly in love with his mischievous antics. he seemed like an introvert to me at first but he came out of his shell and i love that. also i just crave more moments of him and sunghoon's friendship (they both seemed like introverts who found someone they could be extroverts with in each other) i am 👌this close to storming i land and demand that they let me join their merry little band of 2002 children
9. Niki- dance skills= 100 he's just so good it's unreal... it's insane... everytime he's on screen i hear boss musicand i cant even imagine him being younger than anyone, let alone taki. i get why some people dislike him but honestly i think it's just because they don't see him as a child... but he is. i was honestly a bit mad for him when they kept guilt tripping him into leading all of them, and i understood his tjought process when he thought he just kept failing everyone and when he thought things just kept backfiring on him. he is held on such a high pedestal and i dont think he deserves that kind of burden. as for me, it would just be a waste of talent to let him go. his attitude could still improve, as we'd seen when he eventually volunteered to help everyone. i also felt bad when he said that he's scared he might not be voted bc some people dont base on skills and i love him and i just want him to kmow that he's loved
10. Taki- what the hell can i even say?? he's the kindest softest boy ever. he tries to see the good in people and is very hardworking... he listens to people well and actually follow them, so he improves a lot... he knows people think he's cute and he tries and tries and tries to look fierce if the song calls for it... he is amazing
11. K- i really can't say anything, he really stands out during performances. also very pro at dancing. his choreography??? *chef's kiss* and i think the younger trainees depend a lot on him, besides heesung and so he's good at keeping the team together.
12. EJ- im really hesitant about the last person to be the twelfth i lander because it could almost be anyone and i wouldnt be too bummed out bc theyre almost all equally talented... the thing with ej tho is he already gets along well with the i landers and has harmony with other members. (plus see above: im a sucker for the 2002 line) i think its a tiny bit unfair to base it on this bc the others didnt even get a chance to show what they can bring to the group so im torn.
bonus: i wouldnt feel too bad if it were jaebeom (he has great voice, the producers think he's not too stand out bc he's weak at dance, but the i land is already so full of people whose expertise is dancing, so i think there should be someone who's specialty is singing), kyungmin (i really appreciated how hard he worked during the last test and it actually paid off, i honestly noticed him there even if he was always at the back. i also loved his determination and i was so touched when he and jaebeom were talking and he said "there's really nothing to do but believe in the impossible right?" it's just that the i landers were already ahead of him in terms of skills so he failed the votings) and hanbin (i've watched his cover videos and he's really good at dancing and stage projection. like i was honestly wondering why it wasnt showing in the performances :((( and he hadnt even had too much screentime to actually See what he's capable of.
