i'm so unironically baffled at the amount of downgrades this site pushes out on a nearly weekly basis at this point. Near half if not all of them are almost completely useless and give absolutely zero benefit to user experience, if anything @staff is quite literally distancing their userbase.... do you think i want another twitter? Like what purpose or benefit does taking away dash avatars has... what's the benefit of taking away basic accessibility features.. fucking genuinely. I hate it here. I don't know how many more feedback letters I have to send in order for all this shit to stop... i'm so tired.

I love you mute lists
I love you word blacklists
I love you blocklists
I love controlling my online experience so that my ability to exist as a freelancer is not an uphill battle against seeing the constant influx of bad news and burning out as a result of it.
There is nothing wrong with mediating what, when, and how you are exposed to news. It is no one's business how and when you put time, energy, and emotions into something extremely important. Not a single human is entitled to know how you prevent yourself from being spread too thin. You need to take care of yourself before you can sustainably take care of others. "Block and move on" is not just for fiction, it includes real world things that distress and trigger you.

I feel like what's being left out of the conversation about why an algorithm would be bad for tumblr is because we know what algorithms do on other social media sites. Promote reactionary hate.
Twitter is such a discourse spewing cesspool BECAUSE the algorithm promotes posts with lots of engagement. What kind of posts are those? Posts that make people mad. It is an endless feedback loop of arguing and hate. There's a reason click bait of people doing outrageous gross things get spread and its because they make people mad. Facebook literally has papers showing how their algorithm promotes hateful content. It's a well documented, well recorded problem.
I know they've said they're rolling back the algorithm based dash idea, but still most of the complaints I saw were people not saying that they didn't want it to change. And yeah I don't want it to change either but there are reason behind that beyond just preferring it to how other sites run things
And since I'm only allowing myself one post on the matter- if they decide to compress reblog chains they're fucking idiots. They literally already have a feature for that, shorten long posts, and NO ONE USES IT!!! ITS ON THE SAME LIST OF THINGS WE TELL NEWCOMERS TO TURN OFF ALONGSIDE BEST THINGS FIRST!!! THIS IS ALREADY A FEATURE!!! IF PEOPLE WANT IT THEY CAN USE IT WHY WOULD YOU MAKE IT MADITORY WHEN REBLOG CHAINS ARE SO INTEGRAL TO THE SITE
I would even argue that having these options, AND KEEPING THEM AS OPTIONS, is a good thing. If people want an algorithm spoonfeeding them content and an experience more similar to other sites? Fine. Let them. Tell them it's a thing when they make an account, and let it be something people can toggle on and off. Whatever. But trying to force everyone who prefers tumblr as it is to basically have Twitter 2.0? You're stupid and insane if you think that's a good idea

It's fascinating how in reaction to the crab day idea half my dashboard is like "Tumblr is awful do not give them one red cent let the motherfucker burn" and the other half is like "let's save the rec center 🙂"

Idc anymore i think i'm a good enough writer that i can say that when i noticed the pattern in what exactly makes a book "good" on booktok (and, bc of that, what makes it popular and top bestseller lists), it feels almost demeaning and denigrating to the entire craft. Idk if i should blame the way tiktok-esque social media has utterly rotted everyone's ability to concentrate and read more than three sentences, but literally none of those books are objectively good.
(Yes, yes, art is subjective. HOWEVER. Art is subjective when you look at style, at themes, at motifs, at plots and characters. Art is still a craft, it still requires skill. I've seen beyond the tiktok quotes of these books. Not even their editors are good given the amount of typos/spelling mistakes. That is not something that you should find in a traditionally published book.)
You look at these books, and you know the only reason for their existence is to make money. I cannot and will not accept that as art.
(I'm on Tumblr, of course I have to explain every point. Artists who make money off their art =/= people who only create art meant to be profitable. There is a difference between an artist who hopes to monetise doing what they love, who creates what they wish to see more of and who happens to then create something that other people wish to see more of, and a person who looks at what's trending and decides that making an unholy frankenstein's monster of a book that mashes all those trending tropes and motifs together would get them rich quick. The fact that a lot of these booktok books become popular because of nepotism is just the cherry on top. It's soulless.)
And to finally say what I wanted to say, it's because none of these books have any deeper message or even artistic value to them. You will find a few out of context quotes or paragraphs, ones written specifically so they'd look deep and beautiful when taken out of context, so that people would post them, so that people would buy the books. Entire books written just so those few lines could become viral and make cash. It cannot even be compared to a hook line writers would post to get people interested in their works, because in booktok's case, those are the only lines of quality and in the context itself, they are often out of place and forced.
I just hate booktok, i hate what modern social media has done to art. It's all created to be quickly consumed, for the few ☆aesthetic☆ glances, and then discarded. Just to make more money for those who are already nepo babies. As if artists needed more obstacles to jump over.
#of course historically it's always been the same#people with free time to create (rich powerful) created#very rarely did you see someone from a humble bg make it as an artist#which is why killing maiming everyone saying Shakespeare was actually a rich guy btw#but like it makes me angry personally#before you call me just jealous - i don't have any wish to monetise my art#my career ambitions lie in a different field (tho adjacent i suppose since i'm a linguist)#i'm saying it makes me angry for other writers who want to make money doing what they love most#it's always been hard. you've always had to have connections or fight tooth and nail for a chance at being published#why? because of how SUBJECTIVE it is#but at least if your skills distinct you and if you bring a truly unique concept you'd have better chances#then modern social media rolled around and no longer can we just publish and disappear no no#WE have to market our works. on twitter on instagram on podcasts on the radio and tv it's up to the authors#i already found that demeaning enough as an introvert#but now it's not even that. publishers no longer look for unique and distinct#they found out booktok is the real cash cow. they look for colleen hoovers who publish fifty books a year#all of poor quality but with enough aesthetic lines that they can easily be marketed thru#the youth who uses AO3 tags and ''omg it's so girlboss!'' and ''it has representation! (not really it's always piss poor rep)'' to market#it to others. who take the same line over and over and go ''omg... this is so deep'' but the lines never look good in context

if you have $8 to waste on a worthless set of checkmarks to signify that you’re in on a corporate joke that’s exists to take advantage of you, you have enough money to send a $8 tip to an artist or especially sex worker on the website currently trying to deplatform a huge amount of its nsfw creators instead

Oh also when I start dropping the Red White and Royal Blue book quotes expect a FLOOD I'm highlighting the fuck out of this book
#red white and royal blue#lb#okay so 1. its well written. sincerely.#2 it knows the GOAL of its story so in its own way its Plenty deep#in regard to a. romance. b believable lived in characters c hinted emotion and biased pov narration#d political commentary social commentary international commentary generational commentary family trauma commentary#e excellent at what seems to be its theme which is showing how to connect to people you see as different#and like. the way that ties into the core romance and ties into the leads individual family trauma and fharacter arcs#and the way f OUTSIDE the novel how that affects the reader#the novel expects all readers to connect to this democrat politicial loudmouth half mexican texan child of divorce#whos stubborn as hell and somewhat self centered and so Mean to a guy he barely actually knows (when novel starts)#and thrn of course Alex is asked by his life to Connect to Henry. and the readers even if they are a TON like alex#still will also find connecting to Henry a leap (after all most of us simply are NOT royalty and know no one who is#even if we know public social media figures. its not to rhe degree of the Fantastical levrl of Prince Henry#and i think partly the character is a prince rather than Old Money generally because it TAKES the point further#it makes it so unrelatable to nearly all readers. so it asks us and alex to be open and get to know someone we simply cant judge or guess#ok anyway my point 3. i fucking HATE writing advice and heres why#different authors who are GREAT tackle the challenge of writing wrll very different. theres somr advice to#avoid writing thought felt wonders etc type words. this novel does it. and i feel does it well#it keeps the pace snappy in a DENSE book that needs it. it helps create the biased unreliable pov narration of alex#by telljng us not what he Actually thought but what hes PRETENDING TO HIMSELF to acknowledge or not.#which is alsl how i use those words. and its a fun time when the character is lying to themselves and readers have to notice#and get to be in on it

i follow this welsh girl on instagram who almost exclusively posts pictures and stories of either her talking walks in the woods or reading a book in bed surrounded by blankets and she reads like 100 books a year. i don’t know what she does for a living or how she can manage to sustain any of that because she posts quite a lot. but if this isn’t the life i want…

i'll be honest i do not trust any up&coming social media site that claims it will be free to use and also not sell your data and also have zero ads. WHERE are you getting money then? like sure you can rely on donations for sustainability for like... a couple years at best probably, if you're aiming to wildly increase growth/number of users. donation based works ok for small highly invested communities or for online repositories of data (wikipedia, ao3). but like facebook/instagram/tiktok are profitable becuase they harvest data and use ads. tumblr is BARELY scraping by because it only relies on ads. if you take away even that, as soon as you have enough users to surpass the limits of free hosting, you're operating at a deficit.
like not writing this to say don't give it a shot, sincerely wish them good luck and hope they figure it out, it's hard! but also i just don't consider those kinds of websites/communities a reliable "backup" plan compared to tumblr itself which has kept chugging along for years despite Everything. it's a shiny new social media but it is weird to profess that a social media site advertising NO revenue streams will last longer than this one here.
