Out Of Time ~ The Picture
OUT OF TIME MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
Word Count: 925ish
Summary/Request: This is the long-awaited one-shot about the infamous picture of Y/N and Howard. “Hey Bailey! Can you do a one shot of the night the picture of Howard and Y/N dancing was taken. I always wanted to see more of their relationship since Y/N is so conflicted in taking the job as Tony's bodyguard bc of Howard. Thanks! Love your work”
Notes: This is a one-shot for my series, Out Of Time. This happens between chapter 7 and chapter 8.
Tumblr media
Y/N was tired. It had been a long day helping with the war effort and dealing with men who didn’t believe she or Peggy should be involved. No one said those words because they were too afraid of what Steve, Bucky, and the other Howling Commandos would do to them if they did. She wasn’t officially a member of the SSR yet but was tirelessly working toward it. Y/N needed to make sure that there was no question as to if she belonged here and her abilities.
Slumping into her chair, Y/N rested her elbow on the desk and held her head in her hand. Her training wasn’t the only thing making her feel this way. Bucky and Steve had been gone for weeks now, with very little contact. The worry that Y/N felt for her brother and the man she loved was slowly consuming her.
“Long day?” Y/N jumped slightly at the sound of Howard’s voice before moving to face him. “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.” He walked over to the desk beside yours and sat on the edge, his hands stuffed into his pant pockets. “What are you still doing here, kid?”
“I’ve been busy with training,” Y/N responded, leaning back against her chair.
“I wanna bet that's not just what’s got you down.”
She nodded with a sigh. “Been worrying about Steve and Bucky.”
“I’m sure they’re fine. They have something more than just a country to fight for. They have you.”
“They’ll do what they can to protect the country before they worry about coming home to me… that’s what has me concerned.”
Howard studied Y/N as the two fell silent. She was looking at her fingers as they absentmindedly traced patterns on the desktop. He could almost physically see the worry. Her eyes didn’t light up like they use to, her shoulders were slowly sinking like the weight of the world was crashing down on them. She was spending more time training than even taking care of herself. He hated seeing her like this and knew he needed to do something about it.
“Come on,” Howard said. He stood up straight and held out a hand toward her. “We’re going out.”
“Howard,” Y/N shook her head. “I really don’t feel up to it.”
“You need it, sweet cheeks, more than anyone right now.” He leaned in and took one of her hands before pulling her up to her feet. “Let’s go.”
~~~
The dance hall was filled with pretty dames and soldiers, all trying to find someone to dance with and take to bed for the night. As Howard guided Y/N further into the room, she noticed the stares Howard was getting. Some of them were stares of longing, others were glares.
“How many times have you been to this dance hall?” Y/N asked.
“Uh, a few times,” Howard answered. “Can’t remember the exact number. Here we go.” He guided her into an open spot on the dance floor. Pulling her close to him, Howard started leading her in a dance.
“I’m not sure how Bucky would feel about us dancing together.”
“I’m sure Barnes won’t mind me stealing a few dances while he is away. As long as I don’t make a move. It is for your well-being after all.”
“I’m doing fine, Howard.”
“And I don’t believe you.”
Y/N sighed looking down. It felt off being in Howard’s arms but not Bucky’s. She tried not to overthink it as he continued to lead her through dance after dance.
“You have yet to smile, sweetheart,” Howard noted. “What do I need to do to make you laugh?”
“Bring my boys home,” Y/N replied.
“I will do my best but that isn’t something I can fulfill right now.”
She looked down. “I don’t know… I wish I did.”
Howard glanced around the room to try and see if there was something there that he could use to make Y/N laugh. Getting closer to her, Howard began to make comments about the couples around the room and changed his voice to mimic what he believed them to be talking about. It took a few times but Howard could slowly see Y/N easing up with a tight-lipped smile occasionally making an appearance.
Howard continued, making the voices he was doing more animated as Y/N had even begun to laugh slightly. It was a few more minutes before his joke caused Y/N to full-on laugh and throw her head back. Out of the corner of his eye, Howard noticed a flash go off. He made a mental note to chase after the photographer later to get that picture from them.
~~~
“Thank you, Howard,” Y/N said as the man escorted her back to where her room was. “I had fun and I really did need this.”
“Of course,” Howard replied. “Anytime.” The two paused in front of the room door.
“Goodnight, Howard.” Y/N leaned in and kissed his cheek. “I’ll see you in the morning.”
She turned around and disappeared into the room. Howard stayed still, his cheek burning where her lips had touched. He hated how he was forming feelings for someone who was clearly taken. And he respected Steve, Y/N, and Bucky too much to make a move. But he couldn’t allow Y/N to be as down in the dumps as she was and would continue to do things like this until Bucky and Steve came home.

A Reverse Steve Rogers
Jack Thompson x Reader
Tumblr media
Masterlist - Taglist
Requested by @hawaiianpizzaenjoyer !! Thanks for the request, and for being so patient while I got it done! I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it!
Fandom: Marvel
Summary: Y/N, an Avenger, friend of Tony Stark, and the one who helped Steve Rogers adjust to the 21st century after he came out of the ice, gets flung back into the 1940s when something goes wrong on a training mission. She has no idea how long her stay in the 40s might be, but one way or another, it's going to be interesting.

Category: Fluff, Humor
A/N: This doesn't follow any of the season 2 timeline lol, just some vague stuff put together for the sake of this story.
Putting work into an AI program without permission is illegal. You do not have my permission. Do not do it.
"We could always just find another ticket for her and make up a reason for her to be there on her own..."
"Yeah? Like what? At this event, anybody with the slightest hole in their story is gonna stick out like a sore thumb.”
I looked between Peggy Carter and Daniel Sousa as they talked, frantically trying to figure out what to do with me tonight. They were currently in the middle of breaking up a secret society in Los Angeles, and they had a mission disguised as a date tonight where they'd be infiltrating a fancy party being thrown by said society.
Unfortunately for them, I'd landed in their laps (pretty literally) this afternoon, and accidentally thrown a wrench into their whole operation.
One minute, I'd been doing a training mission with the Avengers. The next, I'd been falling on top of  a desk in the SSR in 1947. I still didn't know exactly what had thrown me back in time, but no matter what the cause, the fact didn't change that I was here, and would be for the foreseeable future.
I'd almost had a heart attack when I'd looked up to see THE Peggy Carter, founder of SHIELD and total badass, standing in front of me. I think I freaked her and Daniel out a little by fangirling the minute I got up off the floor, but a stranger landing in the middle of their super high-level organization probably would've landed me in the interrogation room anyway.
Thankfully, I knew Steve Rogers pretty well, and so did Peggy. I'd mentioned his name briefly when trying to explain how I knew who she was, but then I'd been able to use what I knew about Steve and the stories he'd shared with me to convince her I was telling the truth about time travel.
Since then, we'd done some brief introductions and I'd been let out of the interrogation room. I'd been given the bare minimum details of the mission to understand the conversation, and now I sat on the edge of a desk watching Daniel and Peggy talk as they tried to adjust their plans.
"Perhaps Mr. Jarvis would be available on short notice to take her as a date..." mused Peggy.
"Whoa, Jarvis? Oh my gosh, the real person Jarvis is alive and walking around right now. That makes sense," I said, mostly talking to myself.
"That still doesn't solve the problem of them not being on the guest list," continued Daniel, he and Peggy only briefly glancing my way at the outburst.
"Maybe Howard could help us secure another two."
"He already wore out his welcome with these guys to get you in there the first time."
"Did you just say Howard? As in Howard Stark?"
Peggy and Daniel groaned in unison.
"Don't tell me you're a big fan of him too?" groaned Daniel.
"His ego's already big enough as it is," Peggy agreed.
"No, it's not that, I- uh... nevermind." I pushed off the desk, waving off thoughts of Tony. I still wasn't clear on how this time travel stuff worked, and I didn't want to go telling people about Howard Stark's currently nonexistent son without more assurance it wouldn't have any crazy impact first. "Look, you guys clearly don't have space for me in this mission. The best path is a small team, specifically a couple, who can enjoy the night like a regular date while still gathering intel and handling the mission."
Peggy and Daniel shared a look, and I could see an entire conversation passing between them. I continued.
"I might not know much about the forties, but I'm still a capable adult. I'm an Av- I was on a team with Steve to take on missions around the world. I'll be fine handling myself for a bit while you guys take care of business."
"Are you sure?" asked Peggy with a frown.
"We don't want to completely abandon you. Disappearing from your own time and reappearing in another can't be easy," added Daniel.
I gave them a faint smile, momentarily overwhelmed with memories. I'd first met Steve when he'd shown up in the future and needed someone to help him adjust. I'd been a SHIELD agent at the time, responsible for liaising with Tony Stark, so they figured helping a living legend adjust would be nothing compared to that.
They'd been right, and we'd hit it off the bat. When Tony eventually formed the team, I'd been on the roster. And now, I was the one being faced with adjusting to another time.
"It's not easy," I said to Daniel, the smile still on my face. "But I also don't need babysitters when those babysitters have important, world-saving duties to attend to. I actually have a little bit of an advantage, going back in time. I took history classes and whatnot, so I at least have some idea of how this world works."
"Well, if you're sure-"
"Alright! Sousa, Marge, fear not! The cavalry is here."
I turned at the sound of a new voice, but not before I caught Peggy and Daniel rolling their eyes so far back into their heads I couldn't see the pupils. A tall, blond man in a suit was striding across the room towards us, and a second after I started sizing him up he noticed me and did the same.
"Who's this?" he asked, coming to a stop in front of us. Peggy and Daniel didn't answer right away, apparently working together to gather mental strength before entering the conversation with this guy. I just leaned back a bit against the desk and watched.
Peggy and Daniel took a second to make significant eye contact, then sighed as one. Daniel turned to Jack, and Peggy subtly shifted closer to me.
"She's somebody who does a job like ours, but from the future," said Daniel. Jack just stared at him for a minute, then looked to me, and then back at Daniel.
"Sousa, despite what you might think, I'm not stupid."
"Jack, I get that it's hard to believe, but if you actually listen for two seconds-"
Jack huffed and crossed his arms while Daniel kept talking. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Peggy leaning in towards me, and I blocked out the boys' argument as she whispered to me.
"Y/N, I have a favor to ask of you."
"Hit me," I whispered back. Peggy sighed.
"Jack has recently had a moral epiphany," she started. I took half a second to give her a curious glance, and she just rolled her eyes in response. "It's been mostly nice, both to have him on our side and to finally have him respecting me and Daniel and anyone that's not an older man already in power.
"That said, we don't have space for him on this mission. All he's going to do is be a nuisance, and he's far less likely to agree to being benched than you."
"And I take it you have a solution for this?"
"Yes. But it would require throwing you under the bus to keep him occupied tonight."
I paused for a second, giving Jack another good look. He and Sousa were still in the middle of a heated argument while Sousa tried to convince him I was actually a time traveler, and even though they both seemed exasperated, Jack also seemed to be enjoying the back and forth. A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.
"Peggy Carter, it would be an absolute honor to assist you on a mission," I said, turning to her with a smile. "Even if it means spending the evening learning about the forties from a slightly questionable teacher."
"You're a lifesaver," she said, giving me a smile back. She pushed off the desk, moving towards Daniel and Jack to interrupt them but shooting me a wink first. "And don't worry, I'll give you an actual introduction to the decade after this mission is over."
I nodded, then Peggy got Jack and Daniel's attention to put their argument to rest and explain the situation. Jack raised an eyebrow when Peggy told him his job would be keeping me company, but she phrased it well enough that it didn't quite sound like babysitting for either of us. Finally, he agreed, and Peggy and Daniel headed out for their event, leaving me and Jack Thompson alone in the bullpen of the LA SSR.
He stood by the windows, staring out at the traffic below as I spun around in a swivel chair. I kept looking at him, but he didn't look over at me once, at least not that I could catch. Finally, after a few more rotations, I huffed a sigh and pushed myself up. I put my hands on my hips, but Jack still didn't look over.
"Alright, I'm bored out of my mind, which should not be a possibility less than three hours after I suddenly appeared in a different time period," I said. Jack finally looked over at me, raising an unimpressed eyebrow as he did. I continued. "You're supposed to be helping me adjust to this place, since I don't know how long I'm gonna be here. Believe it or not, it didn't take me that long to adjust to this office."
He sighed heavily, but stepped away from the window anyway, stopping a few feet in front of me with his arms across his chest. He stared at me for a few seconds without saying anything, and I just stared right back. I crossed my arms to mirror him and he snorted and rolled his eyes.
"You're really from the future?" he finally asked.
"Did the twenty minutes Peggy and Daniel spent convincing you not settle this matter?"
He grunted, then finally dropped his arms back to his sides.
"Fine. What do you want to do then?"
I grinned. "Any good places to grab a drink and a dance around here?”
****************
"This is only my first week in LA, so if this place ends up being terrible, it's the city's fault and not mine," said Jack as we stepped out of the cab together. I'd taken a second to find a dress to steal from Peggy's emergency disguise stash at the SSR, since my 21st century mission clothes would probably cause a riot if I went out in them, and then Jack and I had jumped in a cab to a spot in town he'd heard about.
"Boooo," I teased as he paid the driver and we headed in together. "You can't consider the possibility of the night being a failure before it's even started! It's a jinx."
"A jinx?"
"Yeah, you know. Like bad luck."
"I know the definition of the word jinx," he scoffed. "I just think it's ridiculous you believe in them."
"Oh, yeah, of course. Actually, I didn't want to tell Peggy and Daniel this, but in the future we've discovered that a lot of things people dismissed as superstitions or bad luck are actually true. Like jinxes. Oh, and breaking a mirror? That actually will mess you up! We didn't realize it until science advanced a little further, I think in the seventies, but it's true."
Jack stared at me for a few seconds, and I stared back with a perfectly neutral expression on my face. Then, he broke into a grin and nudged me with his shoulder.
"You're messing with me."
"I definitely am."
He scoffed and shook his head, but the smile didn't drop off his face. He sighed dramatically, looking up at the club in front of us, then held out his arm for me to take.
"C'mon. You're the one who wanted to experience the time period."
I smiled up at him, then looped my arm through his. He pulled me a little closer, and I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't speed up a bit as we walked into the club together.
Immediately I got hit with the music I associated with the swinging jazz of the 1940s as we stepped into a world of men in suits and women in old-style dresses, all twirling across the dancefloor together.
"Whoa," I breathed. Suddenly, it started to sink in that I was actually in the 1940s, more than 80 years from everything and everyone I knew. A new surge of sympathy for Steve welled up in my chest.
"You alright?" asked Jack, nudging me a little as we stood in the doorway. I took a deep breath in and out, then slowly nodded. "Okay, good. Let's go get a drink.”
I huffed a laugh as he pulled me through the crowd and towards the bar. We managed to find two stools, and Jack pulled my seat out for me before I sat down. I couldn't help giving him a slightly bemused look, which he grunted about as he took the seat next to me.
"What?" he asked.
"Nothing," I said, waving him off. "Just, you know... forties."
He turned to stare at me, his eyebrows knit together, but the bartender appeared before he could question what I was talking about.
"What can I get the two of you?" asked the bartender. Jack turned to me, letting me go first.
"I'll have an old fashioned, please."
Both he and Jack looked at me for a second, but I looked right back at both of them like they were crazy for questioning it (because they were). After a second, Jack shrugged and turned back to the bartender.
"I'll do the same."
The bartender nodded, then moved away to make the drinks. I turned and gave Jack a smile.
"Thanks for buying," I said. "I didn't have my wallet on me when I got sucked back in time, and even if I did, I don't think the bartender would be able to accept the kind of bills I carry. I'm not trying to get arrested for counterfeiting a few hours into being in the past."
Jack chuckled. "Sure thing. So, an old fashion, huh?"
"Yeah. It's Ton- uh, it's my friend's favorite drink. He got me drinking them, too."
"Hm. Future sounds like a wild place."
"Honestly, I'd say 1940 is a little wilder."
The bartender set down our drinks, and Jack put a few bills on the table. Then, once he was out of earshot again, I turned to Jack with a smile.
"Cheers," I said, raising my glass in toast. "To new experiences and getting to know each other and this weird ass trip back to the past."
Jack smiled, although I could tell he was fighting it, and clinked his glass with mine before we both took a sip.
"So, Jack Thompson... tell me about the forties."
Jack and I spent the next hour talking about everything from foods that hadn't been invented yet (ranch dressing!) to the weird, national popularity of baseball and how I couldn't wait to see people start getting the memo about the NBA. Some of it was informative, even helpful, but for the most part we just... talked. Laughed. Joked around and enjoyed each other's company like people who'd known each other much longer than a few hours.
For some reason, it just felt easy. Going into this, heading out with someone who was clearly a confident, if not arrogant, man from the 1940s, with Peggy's warnings on top of everything else? Well, let's just say I didn't have the highest of hopes. But by some miracle, whether it was our equally loud and teasing personalities or that fact that I proudly didn't know anything about baseball beyond the fact that games took way too long, rather than the ignorance or indifference he had been expecting... Jack Thompson and I got on like wildfire.
"I'm just saying, when you're watching a legend play, that's the only part of the game that matters!" Jack continued, defending his baseball stance. "And DiMaggio's a legend."
"Yeah, no shit," I scoffed, rolling my eyes to go with it. Jack snorted at my language, but I caught him grinning at me all the same as he took a sip from his drink. "But, unlike in other sports, your legend's only playing for like fifteen minutes out of every hour. Still boring!"
Jack opened his mouth, clearly ready with some other comeback that would do absolutely nothing to change my position, but before he could, the band started up with something I actually recognized.
"Oh my God!" I cried, setting down the now-empty glass that previously held my second old fashioned. "This song- we have to go dance!"
"You know this song?" asked Jack, only looking slightly bemused as he set down his glass and I dragged him towards the dance floor.
"Yeah. Steve plays it all. The damned. Time," I said, finally coming to a stop in the middle of the floor. I moved to drop Jack's hand now that I'd gotten him out here, but he just squeezed it tighter and pulled me closer. "It's one of the only songs from the forties he plays that I can actually stand."
Jack scoffed, wrapping an arm around my waist as we started twirling across the floor together. "You're actually friends with him? Sousa wasn't making that whole thing up?"
"What? No. Actually, I'm the one that helped him adjust to the future not long after he woke up in my time."
Jack nodded, looking thoughtful. "So that's why you recognized Carter? Sousa said you almost fainted from excitement when you first saw her."
"No. I mean, sort of, I guess. But I would've known her even without Steve. She's only the coolest, most badass woman and intelligence pioneer the world has ever known," I said. Jack snorted, and I scowled. "What? You disagree?"
He shrugged. "I mean, I'd probably argue there are some other intelligence pioneers that deserve mention. But... I guess no, I don't necessarily disagree. Just don't mention it to her, alright? I'll deny it, and I don't need her immortalization from a time traveler being thrown in my face every time I work a case with her for the rest of time."
I laughed, and Jack gave me a knowing smile before spinning me out and away from him. He twirled me across the floor before pulling me back to him quickly. We moved in perfect harmony, picking up our pace to match the band and putting the other couples to shame. We quickly got lost in our own little world, to the point that everyone and everything except the music disappeared. When Jack sped up, I sped up a little more, and we easily met each other's challenges, stupid smiles on our faces the whole time.
When a slower song started playing, Jack and I finally relaxed the pace, forgoing the elaborate dance moves to just sway in place and catch our breaths for a minute. I was still a little lost in our moment, enough so that I didn't notice someone else approaching us until he shoved himself part way between me and Jack.
"Hey doll. Mind if I cut in?" The guy leered over me, totally ignoring Jack as he reached for my hand without waiting for my answer. I scoffed, my tired-but-happy smile instantly turning into a scowl. Jack seemed equally frustrated and moved as if he was about to step in and do something about it, but I decided to just take care of it for the both of us.
"Actually, yeah, I do mind," I snapped, fixing the guy with an unimpressed look as I snatched my hand out of his reach. He seemed incredibly surprised by my response, but I plowed ahead anyway. "I'm dancing with someone already, and even if I weren't, I have no interest at all in dancing with you. So... scram. Or beat it. Or whatever people say now."
The man just stood there for a second, open-mouthed, blinking at me in stunned silence. Then, his expression shifted into a scowl and his face started to turn red.
"I- You- How dare you-!"
"Dude, get lost," I said, crossing my arms and staring him down as I talked over him. I glanced over his shoulder to Jack, who also looked shocked but in a pleasantly surprised way, and addressed him. "What's another good way to tell someone to go away?"
He shrugged, a delighted smile growing on his face. "Take a powder?"
"Really?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. Jack just nodded, so I looked back at the rude guy. "Alright, take a powder. Hit the bricks. Take a long walk off a short pier. Other creative ways to say leave. I want to dance to this lovely song with my dance partner here, who is not you, so... yeah. Take the blatant instructions."
The man whirled around to Jack, like he expected him to say or do something to reign me in. Jack just shrugged again.
"You heard the lady. I'm not gonna tell you anything she didn't already say."
The man scowled, whipping back to look at me again. I just met him with crossed arms and a look that told him I wouldn't be budging an inch. He spluttered a few more incoherent words in indignation, then stormed off the dance floor and out of sight. I sighed, then faced Jack again.
"How wildly out of place was that for the time period? Both him and me?" I asked. Jack grinned.
"Him? Not very. You? Insanely," he said, taking my hand again as we went back to gently swaying in place. He tugged me a little closer to his chest, and I smiled. "I gotta say though, I sure enjoyed watching it."
"Good. Because I don't actually care at all, and I had a lot of fun doing that."
Jack laughed, throwing his head back before fixing me with a brilliant smile. He twirled me out and away from him again, then pulled me right back into his chest. We swayed together, closer than we'd been all night, and to my surprise I started noticing more than a few butterflies squirming in my chest as I stared up at the SSR Chief. Hm, noted the more logical side of my brain as we moved across the crowded dance floor. Nice, my heart replied as Jack's strong hand laid firmly on my waist and my hand traveled to the collar of his shirt.
Jack and I spent the rest of the night at the club, enjoying the music, the dancing, and each other's company until the place turned on the lights and threw us out. A few times, other men came up to hit on me and "steal me away" from Jack. Each time, I dressed them down and sent them on their way, and each time Jack just grinned and watched me do it. I could still tell he was ready to jump in, that his instinct was to take care of it for me, but he seemed to enjoy watching the jerks splutter and babble in shock and surprise as much as I did.
Afterwards, when we wandered back out onto the LA street together, Jack insisted on escorting me back to Howard Stark's place, where I'd be staying with Peggy. It was going to be incredibly weird staying at Tony's dad's house, meeting him and the real-human Jarvis, but I could process that later. Right now, I wanted to focus on the amazing, less-weird parts of being in the 40s. Specifically Jack Thompson, who I'd just spent a wonderful night enjoying this new time period with.
Jack hailed us a cab, and I rested my head on his shoulder and watched the city go by as the taxi took us out of the city, to the massive Stark mansion. It was basically a 40s version of Tony's Malibu house, and a pang of sadness tightened in my chest when I realized I had no idea when–or if–I would see my friends again.
I took a deep breath and shook those thoughts out of my head as the car came to a stop. All of that was a problem for later, not now. Jack got out first, holding the door for me and offering a hand to help me out, which I took. Rather than dropping it once I stood, he wrapped it around his arm as he asked the cabbie to wait and escorted me towards the house. We stopped on the porch and turned to face each other, and I realized I actually really didn't want the night to end.
"Thanks for showing me around the forties," I said, giving Jack a small smile. "It was actually really fun."
"You don't have to sound so surprised," he griped, but a smile made its way onto his face all the same. "So... I don't know how long you're gonna be here, and obviously we've got a lot of other work to do with Carter and Sousa tomorrow, but... maybe I could take you out again sometime. There's still a lot of forties you haven't seen yet."
"I'd like that," I said, a warm feeling welling up in my chest. I hesitated a second as Jack and I stared at each other on the doorstep, then decided to say fuck it and keep doing what I'd been doing all night: following my impulses. "Quick question: in the forties, if I kiss you on the first date, is that going to scare you off or something?"
Jack grinned. "It might get a raised eyebrow from the cabbie, but I sure as shit won't be complaining."
"Good."
With that, I grabbed Jack's lapels and tugged him towards me, leaning up just a bit and giving him a kiss. It was short, really just a quick peck since we'd just met, but fireworks exploded in my chest at the sensation anyway.
Jack's grin stayed in place as we pulled apart, and his hand lingered on my waist an extra second before dropping to his side. He took a step backwards, towards the waiting car, even as his eyes stayed on mine. I rested my hand on the doorknob, watching Jack and trying to stay in the moment even as he walked away.
"Welcome to the forties, sweetheart," he called as he made it down the porch steps and into the driveway. "I'll see you at work tomorrow."
I waved, a smile on my own face to match his. "Can't wait."
Jack gave a short wave and one last grin before getting into the cab. I watched as he drove away, a smile still on my own face even after I knew he couldn't see it. Finally, after the lights of the cab faded back into the LA night, I turned on my heel and walked into the house.
I'd been in the 40s for less than twelve hours, and I knew for a fact that I hadn't even scratched the tip of the iceberg on exploring the time period, or what frustrations being eighty years removed from everything I knew would bring. But, despite all that, I'd had a blast tonight, and tomorrow I'd get to start working with THE Peggy Carter. Whether I was only here for another few hours or it turned into months or longer, I couldn't help being excited at the idea of everything that was yet to come for me, not least of all my next date with Jack Thompson.

A Proposal
Tumblr media
Summary: howard asks for your hand in marriage
Warnings: fluff
A/N: someone requested this a while ago, and it's 639AM where i live right now and im tired as hell and forgetful about who wanted a fluffy howard stark marriage proposal lol.
You’d known something was up when he started asking your shoe sizes one morning when the pair of you were Lounging around in bed. He kept guessing numbers, yet, you’d never tell him. Then he started placing flowers in the apartment at odd places; some in the bathroom, some on the dresser of the bedroom. He said they were pretty; just like yourself.
When the pair of you strolled through the mall, he’d try and get you to try on formal clothing. You assumed it was a kink of his or something.
It happened on a Tuesday afternoon. You’d come home from work, he’d seat the kitchen table with a bouquet of flowers along with rose petals falling in a trail to the bedroom. Following the trail, you cocked your head to the side when you noticed him kneeling in the middle of the floor with wedding attire on his body.
“Howard?” You smiled, taking a cautious step into the room. “What’s going on?”
“I wanted this day to be perfect.” He smiles, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small black velvet box. Gently, he opened the box and displayed it with an engagement ring.
“Howard, you scoundrel,” you purred as you walked over to him and laced your fingers through his beard before tears pricked at your eyes. “Of course I’d say yes to you.”
Smiling widely as he stood up, he slipped the ring on your finger before leaning over and pressing his lips to yours. “I hope the dress and shoes fit you; it’s been hell trying to hide this secret.”

TONY STARK!
when Tony was young, you were his world but he just couldn't bring himself to tell you
Tumblr media
pairing: young Tony Stark x fem!reader
warnings: NSFW, angst? , english is not my first language
word count: 1,01k
let me know what you think!! reblogs, comments, likes, and feedback are highly appreciated <33
Your laugher filled the halls of the big empty house the Starks resided in. Running through the big doors, the ones that were not locked, you enjoyed being chased by Tony. His shadows seemed to taunt you as you tried to figure out his hiding spot in the dining room, breathing heavily.
Tony watched. His soft lips grinning like the Cheshire cat, while his eyes trailed your body, then your face. God, he loved the way your mouth seemed to always be calling him, your eyes seemed to always be haunting him. Their striking color tattooed in his mind. He was sure he could never forget.
Your breasts heaved up and down as you were trying to catch your breath and the young Stark boy couldn't help but bite the inside of his cheek, tempted. His ego wouldn't normally allow him to leave his hiding spot, but he knew he would always make excuses for you.
He started sneaking up behind you, but you were so focused on your own breath that you didn't hear his until it fanned against your neck. you turned around, shocked, while holding your hand over your heart. You shot him a crooked smile, loving the way his eyes told you everything his mouth couldn't.
You both knew that without you, the grieving of his parents would have ended in much worse scenarios than pissing himself while being drunk. You both knew that the last time before he would leave this house forever would have looked quite different than chasing each other and giggling loudly.
You were confident enough to say that he loved you and that you sure as hell loved him – but he wasn't.
You didn't pressure him in saying it, but you wished for nothing more than to hear it, see it scribbled on a little note or be shown by little, heartwarming gifts. You knew you were the one who had told him that you didn't want any gifts, but flowers wouldn't hurt. You were his angel. That's what he called you, that's what he told you and it was endearing enough for that smart brain of yours to stick around for years.
Trailing his brown orbs down to your legs, oh he loved your legs, you caressed his shoulders lovingly. "Got you baby.", he murmured, making you gulp, knowing the tone of his voice exactly. Slowly he trailed his hands up your hips, shoving your black jeans skirt up. "So soft, so pretty.", he whispered swiping a finger over your satin slip. "New?", he asked, already knowing the answer. He knew his girls panties well. You nodded, chewing your lip, before tucking on his band shirt. "I want to fuck you one last time in my bed, yeah? One last time baby." You nodded. In your mind he already had you down on your knees.
Scooping you up, his hands on your bum, you left soft bites around his neck, leaving a trail of marks. You licked his earlobe, knowing he loved it.
Tony unlocked his old bedroom door. It was even more unpersonal than before, but he didn't care as he threw you on the fresh sheets. You released a giggle as you bounced up and down, but stopped when he took of his shirt. Without another word, he opened your skirt button and slid it down your legs. He trailed a finger over the wet spot only created for him. "I'm tempted to leave them on." He kissed your button over the silk, earning a ragged breath from you.
"Tony.", you breathed, trailing your hands under your top, playing with your already hard nipples. Looking up at you, his eyes darkened even more. Tearing of your shirt, you shuddered. Tony wasn't a softy in bed. He liked you fucked wholeheartedly and to complete exhaustion, so when he started wildly licking your breasts, while shoving two fingers inside of you, pumping fast, you weren't startled knowing he was going to have you see stars in a minute. Gripping his neck, you pulled his head up kissing him hard. He scrunched his eyebrows. God, she's so perfect. "I'm going to...", you moaned, making him halt all his motions. You looked at him bewildered. "I want you to come around me baby. Can you do that for me?", he asked looking at you with adoration. "Yes please, please, please.", you wimpered. Not waiting any longer, he took his pants off. You watched as he pumped himself a few times before slamming into you. With fast and hard strokes, he became a moaning mess above you. He was loud and you loved it. "Fuck.", you moaned, raking your hands thru his soft locks. "Fuck, fuck, fuck."
He looked up from watching himself get lost in you and locked eyes. They twinkled. You loved that too. "Tony!" You clenched, making him clench his jaw. "I-I-", you started, but were stopped from your eyes rolling into the back of your head, while he kept pounding into you. He slapped your breast watching your soft skin get red. You moaned loud as you came, your nails dugging into his back. Filling you up he slowed down, breathing hard. "Such a pretty pussy. Your so pretty angel. So good for me.", he cooed as he looked down at your messy self. His eyes twinkled. He called you angel. You loved that. "I love you."
You said it before. A few 'love yous' here and there, but this seemed intimate, and you could see your heart breaking in the look of his eyes. He sat up abruptly. "We should leave.", "Tony.", you pleaded, feeling the tears well up in your eyes. "Don't do that. I'm begging you." You knew Tony Stark. And you knew the moment you said those words to him, looking into his eyes, you would be sleeping alone tonight.
"Lets go." He left the room. Left the house. Leaving you naked on his old bed.

Time In A Bottle(young!Howard Stark X reader)
Paring: young!Howard X Carter!Reader
Summary: after a time machine going wrong a few faces from the past get knocked into our century.
A/N: this is an old story of mine that I posted on Wattpad a while back. It's not edited but I hope you all enjoy.
Tumblr media
"can't believe how long it's been since you've been in the ice" I mumbled looking through a magazine that was just published. It was full of articles and pictures of Steve, my aunt peggie, and Howard Stark. I kept flipping through when I stopped on a picture of my aunt.
"you know you kinda look like her" Steve said standing behind the stool I was sitting on and looked over my shoulder looking at the picture of Peggy. I smiled and nodded. I was proud to be a Carter and I didn't hide it like my sister Sharon did. Before I could say anything else there was a loud crash coming for the lab. "what the hell was that?" I asked Tony who was sitting on the couch with pepper.
"you didn't leave anything on did you?" pepper asked. "it's probably just Bruce" Tony mumbled and got up.
"no because Bruce and natasha went on vacation... Remember?" tony stopped in his tracks and looked guilty. He knew exactly what he did he just wasn't ready to admit to what he did. "I'll be back" he said running towards the lab.
"miss. Carter, Mr stark has requested your assistance in the lab" I hear Friday call out from the speakers of the lab. I sighed and threw the magazine onto the coffee table and walked towards the lab. "Tony way do I always have to save your ass" I asked walking into the lab.
When I looked up I saw a treo of people serounding the time machine we've been working on for months. "who's your friends?" I asked crossing my arms. Tony tried to talk but I ignored him looking at three people. One that I recognized made my heart skip a beat.
"aunt Peggy?" I mumbled. She didn't hear me which I was thankful for. No need to add more to the confusion.
"how did you guys get here?" I asked my question was competly ignored and my aunt Peggy started to attack a man who looked like Tony. "Howard you buffoon I told you to not mess with that damed robot again"
"time machine!" Howard correct. "it's a time machine and it obviously worked so I'm a genius" he said with a smirk and crossed his arms over his chest with pride. Now we know where tony gets his ego. "what year is it miss?" the third one asked. He sounded like Jarvis just more human.
"2022" I said crossing my arms. As the three conversed with Tony and I couldn't help but feel a pair of eyes on me I looked over and noticed Howard staring at me. Howard was pretty handsome in his younger years. He looked at lot like Tony but maybe a bit taller. They both seemed to have the same attitude and the same eyes and hair.
I looked at him and raised an eyebrow questioning him. He simply winked and tried to get his two since in the conversation. After a few minutes of arguing we finally came to agreement.
"okay so they'll stay here In till we can figure out how to send them back home" I said walking to the time machine. It looked burnt to the crisp and refused to turn one. I sighed as I picked up a piece that fell off and sat on top of the waist of space.
"(y/n) why don't you show our guests around and show them where the extra rooms are" Tony said before I could escorts them to their destinations Peggy chimed in. "that won't be necessary" she said to me. "I think I can find my way around" she left the lab and literally walked the opposite direction of where she was supposed to go. I crossed my arms and rolled my eyes at the woman I shared blood with. "she's going the wrong way isn't she?" Howard asked clearly reading my expressions right.
"yup" I said turning to him. He flashed me a smirk and looked me up and down. "if the offer of a tour of our new living facilities are still open I would love if you'd show me around" I rolled my eyes at him. He was definitely cocky and very brave you could also tell him and Tony are related. I scoffed "fine" I then started to walk down the hallway as Howard tried to catch up with me.
-----------(1st pov)-----------
I tossed and turned in my bed. Once comfy bed felt like a brick and the room felt like a hundred degrees. Millions of things ran through my head. From the simplest things to more hectic things. My first thoughts were on my aunt and how hard it felt to tell her I was her blood or the fact me and Tony couldn't figure out how to send her back to the right time period.
It also felt wired that I couldn't get Howard out of my head. The man was indeed a charming man much like his son. He also held the same ego and sarcasm but he seemed to know when to hide it unlike Tony.
The man wouldn't leave me alone the rest of the day. He would follow me around the compound like a lost puppy or try to 'help' me in the lab. On the contrary I don't need help in my lab and I felt that he needed to know I don't need a man to help me get my job done. That's why I own my own lab because dispit Tony being my best friend it was always hard to do a job with out him breathing down my neck.
I sighed giving up on sleep and left my room. I quietly walked down the hallway trying not to wake anyone and headed into the kitchen for some tea and maybe a snack. I sighed rumgimg through the cabinets in the dim almost dark room.
"can't sleep either?" I voice said making me jump. I quickly turned around and saw Howard setting at the counter in the middle of the kitchen. He looked just as tired as I felt. His brown hair slightly wet from a shower but in some strainds of hair were fluffy and Stubele peppered his jaw. He was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans that Tony possibly gave him. Above all he was handsome I wasn't denying that but in the end I would have to stop myself from getting close to him. For his, mine, and especially Tony's sake.
"no I can't sleep too much on my mind" I sighed setting a crossed from him. He simply smirked and shook his head. "this hole thing is a mystery to me too. I think this is an amazing experience but then I want to get Peggy and Jarvis home where they belong"
"if ony Bruce was home, he's just as smart as you and Tony"
"your pretty intelligent yourself doll" he responded. His brown eyes looked at me and he smirked making me blush.
"me and Tony will try to get you home" I said. "I mean no rush... This time period can't be that bad could it?" he asked.
I titled my head to the side and my straight face broke to a smile. "are you kidding? I would love to live in the 40s"
"why?" he asked with a chuckle. "I Love the history, the music, the cars are my favorite" I smiled.
"you like cars?" he smirked like he was surprised. I slightly nodded and He looked amused.
"what was Steve like back then? I mean before the serum?" I asked breaking the silence.
"much like he is now I'm guessing. I didn't really know him much before he took the serum" he said drinking the last of his coffee. As we fell into comfortable silence I started to feel my eyes get heavy. I rested my elbow on the tabe and my head was supported by my  fist. "you look tired.. You should go back to bed..we gotta lot of work to do tomorrow" Howard smiled at me. I only nodded and stood up from the counter. I smiled and padded his shoulder. "get some sleep too Stark" he only nodded.
"good night doll" he called out as I left the room.
------------
The next morning I woke up before anyone else. It was pretty quiet which in my opinion was good. That ment Tony was getting the right amount of sleep he deserves and hopefully the rest of the team was doing the same.
I really didn't feel like working on the time machine before Tony and Howard got up so I just went down to the grauge where all the cars we owned sat. All of them were different in size in color. To Scott's rust bucket of a van to clint and Steve's motorcycles. I like to think my baby out shined them all. My car is back 1967 chivy impala. I worked hard to keep in shape and always made sure I ran to perfection.
I smiled at the black automobile and turned on my CD player. The silver machine flashed one and played Elvis Presley on a low volume. Tony and Clint always called me old school. I didn't use Bluetooth speakers to listen to music and I never saw the reason to by modern cars. I hated New music and new anything. I'm a old soul as steve would say. I loved old movies like Alfred Hitchcock movies or Friday the 13th. I refused to listen to any new music which annoyed Wanda and Peter in some ways.
I digged out the tools I needed and started tinkering under the hood. Things were going through smoothly in till I felt one bolt that wouldn't loosen. I grunted getting aritated and started to pull harder while cussing under my breath.
I then herd the door open and close. I ignored it and continued to work. So after the noises disappeared I felt someone come up behind me. The figure the bigger than mine and I felt his arms reach and grabbed the rinch I had. When I felt his chest against my back I quickly elbowed him. "hay doll I'm only trying to help" it was howard. I rolled my eyes and moved away from the car. "thanks but I got it" I said crossing my arms.
As I turned back around and finished my work on the engine. As I had my back to him I heard him snort and let out a sigh. I quickly wiped around and crossed my arms and Clinched the wrinch I had. "what?"
"nothing" he smiled and moved closer. I stepped back and leaned on my car. "your different from anyone I've ever met"
"oh?" I said not really amused but wanting to know what he meant. "you don't fall at my feet and you stand your ground" he explained. "your kind to me with out trying to be a flert and I really admire how smart you are"
"well... Thanks I think" I slightly blushed and turned back around before he could see. When I leaned over into the car under the hood I saw him move over to the side of the car in the corner of my eye. I sighed as he watched me closely as I worked.
When I went back to the bolt I was struggling with I pushed down as hard as I could and got it lose. But when I did I smashed my had making me hiss and pull back. I grumbled and shook my hand to hit rid of the pain. I squeezed my eyes shut not seeing Howard come up and grabbed my jammed hand in his hand. I opened my eyes and saw him looking down at my hand and rubbing where it hurt. "what are you doing?" I asked stepping back slowly.
"it's bruised let me see" he said taking my hand back and examining my thumb and palm. "im fine really" his chocolate eyes looked up at me making my heart race. My cheeks faded into a pink color and this time he saw it.
"I'm making you nervous, aren't I doll?" he asked kissing my knuckles then Releasing my hand. "n-no you don't" I said trying to stand my ground. I quickly turned around to my car and shut the hood. As soon as the hood shut with a thud I felt him behind me.
"so now your being shy around me?" he asked and kissed my cheek then my jaw. "what happened to your little attitude?" I sighed and turned around facing him. One of his hands fell to my hip and his other went under my chin lifting it up so we made eye contact. "we should see if Tony's up" I whispered.
He leaned in closer brushing his nose to mine. "he's not up yet" his brown eyes stared into my soul as his free hand moved to the back of my neck and pulled me closer. "can I kiss you?"
His question surprised me. I wanted to say yes but when I stared into his brown eyes all I saw was tony. What would he think or react to his best friend kissing a young version of his father. He would always tell me how much he hated Howard and I was always Tony's shoulder to cry on and was always there to listen when he needed to rant about his father.
"I can't" I whispered as I placed my hands on his chest as a single tear left the corner of my eye. "we- I cant do this to tony" he looked at me with hurt and confusion glossing over his eyes. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to over step-" he started but I cut him off.
"I'm sorry... It's not you" I shook my head and left his arms. "I should get to work Tony's probably waiting" I said leaving him alone in the garage.
-----------
"sorry about intrupting your vacation Bruce" I said crossing my arms and looking at him through the screen. "we wouldn't have called you unless it wasn't important" I said.
"don't worry about, sorry I cant be there to help" he responds. "no, you and natasha deserve to get away"
"wait I've got a quick question" Scott said behind me. "what?" me and Bruce said at the same time.
"so if Howard doesn't get back to his normal time period doesn't that mess up Tony's chance of being born?"
"no not necessarily" I said hoping up on my desk and flipping through my notebook of notes we've taken the last month.
"most likely when Howard and Peggy went into the future they made a different time line" Tony chimed in.
"wait, what do you mean?" Peggy asked crossing her arms. I looked over to my aunt and Howard. Howard avoided looking at me which made me upset but that was the least of my problems.
"okay like 5 or so years ago a member of the X-men had to trave into the future to fix something. Now when he did he made two different time lines. The one he was originally from the a different one...kinda like an alternate reality" I explained. "now if Tony's right you being here won't affect the past."
"so ignore everything you learned from back to the future Scott" Bruce committed through my computer.
"what if we don't want to go back?" Howard spoke up. Peggy whipped her head around and glared at him. "and take the chance of messing up the future? Messing up the chance of your son being born?" he said kinda shouting at him.
"aunt Peggy" I started she turned around and looked at me without any of the aggretion she gave Howard. "if you trave to the past or the future, that becomes your future/past and the your  future becomes the present. Which now can't be changed by your new future"
"so we could stay here if we wanted?" she asked looking at Steve. He was in the back of the lab trying to stay out of the way. "it's a risk to take, but most likely yes" Tony responded.
"we need to look more into it before you guys make any decisions" I said looking at Peggy then Howard. He immediately looked down and started to fiddle with button on the sleeve of his gray dress shirt.
------------
Another week passed and we got a little bit closer at cracking the codes. Last week we were lucky enough to get Shuri to trave from Wakanda and help us. Me and her worked into the night so Tony and Howard could get sleep and then we got sleep in the early mornings.
"almost done with the coding on this" shuri said taping on one of the hologram screens in the lab. "I'm putting in the last of the wiring now" I respond twisting the red and blue wire together then closing the lid to cover it. Before I could continue with anything else the alarm went off signaling there was a mission.
I sighed and ran off after apologizing to shuri for ditching her. "what do we got?" I asked running into the jet were everyone else was. "just a standard Hydra base, nothing we aren't already use to" steve said.
The mission was longer than we intesapated and a lot of us got engerd especially me but I didn't really care. When we got home I tried to go to bed but Tony and Steve dragged me to the lab were Howard was working with Shuri. "what happened?" he asked as steve picked me up and sat me on Tony's desk. "I'm fine" I mumbled.
"Howard check her enjeries will ya" Steve said walking out of the lab. "I'm fine really" I said as Howard rolled up my sleeve to check the cut on my arm.
"so what happened?" he asked cleaning the cut that was on my forehead. "it was just harder than we expected... More weapons and better sacurity than we thought" I replied and tried to leave but he pushed me back down. "come on Stark"
"you know it's not a bad thing to get help some times" he said kinda irritated. I sighed and let him help. "thanks" I mumbled.
"your welcome" he simply replied and wrapped up my forearm with a bandeges. "I'm only trying to help ya know" he said breaking the silence.
"I know" I mumbled looking down not wanting to face him. He didn't seem to like that so he gently lifted my chin with his fingers. I looked into his brown eyes and felt the familiar feeling. My heart pounded as he leaned in closer than pressed his lips to mine softly. I surprisingly didn't push him away I let it happen. I felt his hands move to both sides of my jaw and pulled me close as he depend the kiss. "Howie.." I said.
He only hummed. "I like that" he said against my lips smirking. He tilted his head to the side for another but placed my hands on his chest stopping him.
"okay I'm sorry" he whispered.
"I'm not, but I can't get attached" I said. "why?" he asked looking scared of rejection. "because we live in two different worlds and time periods.. We have to get you back home" I said tearing up. I moved away and left him but he quickly grabbed my hand before I could get to far.
"you can honestly tell me you feel nothing for me" he spoke.
"yes... I have feelings for you Howard" I said with a whimper.
"then-then what's wrong? Why can't we be together?" he said stepping up closer. "you really want to know why?" I spoke getting frustrated.
"yes! I want to know why" he said shouting. "because I don't trust myself with you" I whispered. I wanted to hug him, kiss him, but I couldn't. The idea of being with someone always seemed to be slim or negative for me. I did care about him but I was scared.
------------
"have you seen my father?" Tony asked coming into the kitchen where I was reading.  "how should I know? I'm not his babysitter" I said not looking up from my book.
"well I just noticed how he started following you around like a lost puppy" he said setting down in front of me. I looked up from my book and locked eyes with genius. "what are you implying?"
He tilted his head to the side like he didn't know what I was talking about. He gave me the soft puppy eyes he always gave me when he knew something was wrong. "okay forget my father, are you okay?"
I shook my head and felt the clinch in my chest as I tried to hold back the tears. "me and Howard kiss" I sob and covered my face afraid of his reaction.
"did he kiss you?"
"yes" I responded
"did you kiss back?"
"I'm sorry Tony, I tried to not get close bu-"
"I'm not mad" he said cutting me off. I raised my droppie head and gave him and questioning look. "why aren't you mad? You always told me how much you hated your father, now I'm starting to fall for him"
"it's okay" he whispered then wrapped his arms around me. "he just better not hurt you"
"it doesn't matter" I spoke pulling away from his arms. "once we get the time machine to work he's going back home.. It would have never worked between us"
"I'm sorry (n/n)" he wrapped his arms around me again and rested my head on his shoulder. "we'll figure this out okay?"
"okay" I mumbled.
----------(Howard's pov)----------
"okay let's start it up" Tony shouts. The machine that's supposed to take us home fired up. I stood there not really wanting to leave and I could tell Peggy didn't want to leave either.
I watched the time machine glow and slightly shake signaling us it was time to leave. I sighed feeling bad that I didn't tell (y/n) goodbye. She was probably the first woman a genuinely loved and was more than a fling or lust. She was smart and sarcastic and didn't fall to my feet when first met her. She made me work for her affection and attention which I actually liked and I worked hard for it.
The times she pushed me away only told me she cared more about other people's happiness than her own. She had a heart of gold and I admired that. She pushed me away because she was afraid of hurting Tony.
"wait" Peggy's voice said grabbing my arm. I looked at her kinda sad and stood in my place. "do you love her?"
I tilted my head to the side trying to play dumb. "don't you look at me like that, you know what I'm thinking about" she said.
I dropped my head and sighed. "I do" i shook my head and started fiddling with the insides of the pockets of my jeans. "than go to her" she said crossing her arms. "stay here and be happy"
"what if effects something? What if I screw up the time line?" I asked pacing back and forth.
"you won't" Tony butted in. "I've talked to Bruce and Strange, and they both said you can't mess it up" I looked down not wanting to look at the man that would be my son in the future. "look she loves you so just stay with her" he said with a sigh. He had the look of someone being forced to say something they didn't.
"I don'-" I started. "go!" Jarvis and Peggy both said at the same time cutting me off.
I nodded and ran out of the room than down the hallway looking for her. I frantically looked around and found a lot of dead ends before I found her in one of the labs. "hay" I said casually.
She quickly looked at me with big dough eyes. "aren't you supposed to be back in the 40's now?"
"I've come to a conclusion" I said walking up to her. "and what is that?" she said crossing her arms. "I'm staying here"
She stared at me with shock painted all over her face. "why would you? What dose this time period have to offer really?"
"you" I said truthfully and stepped up closer maybe only leaving five inches between us. "I want to stay here with you"
I placed my hand on her cheek and slowly leaned in connecting my lips to hers. I felt her arms slowly wrap around my neck and deepen the kiss.
"I love you" I whispered against her lips.
She slowly pulled away and smirked. "I know" I playfully rolled my eyes knowing she was joking. I kissed her forehead and smiled. "your gonna have to teach me about modern time though"
"oh that should be tons of fun" she chuckled than wrapped her small arms around my waist.
"is Peggy staying too?" her small voice spoke making me sighed. She's going back for me, for us. She was on of my closest friends and she's giving up the opportunity to be with steve just so I could be with (y/n). She told me of one of us stays someone needs to be on the 40's keeping it safe. She also told me to keep her safe because (y/n) was her niece. Even though the the two just met you could tell how much Peggy loved her. "she's going back so I could stay with you"
"she also told me to take care of you and if I break your heart she'll come back and kick my ass" I said trying to make her smile. She sadly smiled and looked up at me with her (e/c) eyes.
Everything happens for a reason. I was supposed to screw up with the time machine so it would take us into the future. I like to think I was supposed to find (y/n) and maybe I was supposed to make myself a better father to tony. What ever it supposed to be its definitely a second chance and I'm grateful for that.

i see the “army vet bucky” modern au alternatives for the winter soldier trauma and raise you “life-altering motorcycle accident survivor turned (recovered) painkiller addict bucky”. i think this might be too niche but there’s so many parallels psychologically wrt: the lack of choice inherent in the neurobiology of drug addiction particularly in ppl who started off just taking what was prescribed to them for their pain in like the 90s/early 2000s (when pharma execs Lied about the neurological impacts). the way you kind of lose all that time despite still living it and having the memories, how sometimes the memories feel like they belong to a different person once you get sober. how it separates you from everyone else in your life who Didn’t suffer like that. it’s Compelling. imo.

it always just hits me that:
tony was abused and emotionally neglected since he was a child
he was expected to "toughen up" so he was sent to boarding school, where he was bullied by the other kids (the bullying itself i don't recall being confirmed in the mcu, but i'm assuming it is)
his first real friend is probably rhodey... and they're already teenagers here, right?
i just wish i could hug tony forever

I have no idea how this would work on the timeline but omegaverse AU where alpha Bucky helped omega Howard through heat exactly once and neither of them realized that it got Howard pregnant.
So when Steve meets Tony in the twenty first century, he's prepared for him to smell like Howard. But Tony still takes him by surprise, because sure, he smells like Howard's kid, but he also smells like Bucky's.

A/N: Thank you for this request! Hope you enjoy
Tumblr media
While your dad was out gallivanting with women or doing whatever he was doing with his inventions, Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis took you in. They didn’t mind so you were a perfect house guest and they already saw you as their own daughter. You didn’t go to school since your dad taught you everything you needed to know so you stayed and helped out around the house once Edwin began leaving the house more often.
Your dad kept you off the record so no one knew you existed which was helpful in this current time. He had to disappear as he was wanted for selling his weapons or, as he liked to call them, his Bad Babies. You had been with the Jarvis' since the news broke and you had no idea where your dad was but you knew he wasn’t in New York but Jarvis was out too much for your dad to not be up to something.
~~~~~
Since you were a naturally curious person, one night when Edwin left home late, you stayed up waiting to see when he’d get back. He came home a few hours later but you heard another female voice. It was Anna since she was asleep so you went downstairs to the kitchen to see what was up.
“What were you doing out so late?” you asked him, eyeing him and the woman next to him.
“Miss Stark you should be asleep right now,” Jarvis said, surprised that you were awake at this hour.
You shrugged and looked at the woman. She looked familiar but you couldn’t place her, “Who’s that?” you asked.
“This is Miss Peggy Carter,” he said, introducing her.
“Wait, the Peggy Carter? The one that dad worked with alongside Captain America?”
Jarvis nodded.
“I’m sorry did you say Miss Stark?” Peggy asked, “As in Howard Stark? As in, you’re his daughter?”
“That’s me,” you said, “Don’t feel too bad. He doesn’t mention me to anyone. Likes to keep me a secret.”
Peggy nodded slowly.
“Are you alright Miss Carter? You look a bit beat up,” you pointed out, noticing the bruises on her face.
“Oh yes I’m quite alright,” she said, quickly looking over to Edwin, “Just need to get patched up and I’ll be good to go.”
“I can do it,” you said, heading to the kitchen where you knew the first aid materials were held, “Mrs. Jarvis has been teaching me a few things.”
“Well then, if you two are okay here, I’m going to go to bed now. Goodnight,” Jarvis said, heading upstairs.
Peggy sat down on one of the chairs and you began your work. You two went back and forth talking and getting to know each other more.
Requested: Yes, by @flowers-and-fichte ! Thanks so much for your patience with this one queen, it took me forever (I completely underestimated my April schedule when I opened requests), but I’m happy with how it came out! Hope you enjoy it!
Summary: Steve Rogers was supposed to get the serum and become Captain America. An enemy agent was supposed to shoot him and Erskine, keeping the Allies from ever getting a weapon like that. Y/N was supposed to be in the room, supporting her boyfriend and keeping an eye on things along with her fellow agent, Peggy Carter. None of them end up with the roles they'd expected.
A/N: I haven’t watched tfa or what if? in a hot minute so this ended up as a kind of mix of all of those with some other fun stuff thrown in there
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
I couldn't help the question escaping my lips as I sat at the bar with my boyfriend, Steve Rogers. He looked even paler than usual as we sat together for our last night before Steve would risk everything in an experiment to become a supersoldier tomorrow morning. We'd both been given special leave from camp and our regular duties to spend tonight together, both of us mentally preparing.
"I'm sure," he said, after taking a long breath in and out. He looked at me with a calm smile, confidence written in every line of his face despite the massive uncertainty that followed us through every minute of this war.
His answer didn't surprise me one bit.
I'd only met Steve a short time ago, when he showed up at camp for training along with tons of other recruits. Despite the fact that he was clearly nowhere near healthy enough to be here without the support of Doctor Erskine, and that General Phillips clearly didn't like him very well, he never let any of that stop him or slow him down.
I'd fallen in love almost at first sight.
Despite the mountain of obstacles in his way, Steve had fought to be part of the war, to defend justice and freedom, no matter what barriers anyone put in his way. From the US military to the enemy, he did everything in his power to stand for what was right, no matter who stood against him. What more could I ask for in a partner?
"You're coming with me tomorrow, right?" he asked, looking at me with a touch of uncertainty breaking through his expression. It was the first and only sign he'd shown of fear for tomorrow and what it might bring.
"Of course, Steve," I said, smiling as I reached out to take his hand. I'll be there with you every step of the way, both before and after."
He nodded, giving me a tight smile which I returned. Neither of us was willing to entertain the possibility that there might not be an after tomorrow.
We finished our drinks, taking our time and enjoying the moment together, then left hand-in-hand to return to our separate army bunks for the night. I knew sleep would be difficult, but I did my best to drift off quickly, since I'd need to be as rested as possible for the morning.
The drive to the facility and all the procedures that went with it passed in a blur when the time came. I stayed by Steve's side as much as I could, both of us resolute and determined as we entered the top secret facility where Steve would become the world's first super soldier.
"Don't worry, he's going to be fine."
I nearly jumped out of my skin at the sound of Howard Stark's voice behind me. I'd been lost in thought and hadn't noticed his approach, and couldn't hold back a slight glare when I turned to face him.
"You're strung as tight as a live wire."
"I don't think that's a real expression, Howard."
He shrugged. "What makes any expression more real than another? If you say it often and with enough confidence, it becomes one."
With that settled, at least in his mind, he headed off towards the waiting machines and instruments he needed to tend to. I just shook my head as I watched him go.
"How are you feeling?" asked the much more calming voice of Peggy Carter from my right. I sighed as I turned to her, arguably my best friend in the world, and she gave me a sympathetic look.
"I've felt better. I just... I hope he's okay. Howard says he will be, but Howard's a maniac, so what does he know?"
Peggy gave me a soft smile as I turned to look at Steve, who stood across the room talking to Doctor Erskine.
"He will be fine, Y/N. And once this is over, the two of you can keep fighting the bad guys and saving the world even more than you already have."
I sighed, at last turning my attention back to my friend and willing myself to believe her words.
"I'm sure you're right, Peggy."
Time seemed to fly by and move at the pace of molasses somehow at the same time as Howard made the last adjustments on the machines and Steve had a last few words with Doctor Erskine. I waited a few steps from the machine with Peggy by my side as Steve finally approached. The time had come.
And then a shot rang out.
I whipped my head around in horror towards the source of the noise, to find Doctor Erskine lifeless on the ground, a man with a gun hovering over him. Officers all around the room ran to take him down, but not quickly enough.
He fired off another shot. It hit Steve right in the chest.
"No!" I screamed, surging forward to try to get to my boyfriend, my best friend, the love of my life, but my progress was stopped by an even greater force pulling me backward. I whirled around, ready to throw off whatever was pulling me backward, and to my surprise found Peggy.
"I'm sorry, Y/N, I'm so sorry," she said, continuing to drag me nonetheless. Then she turned, shouting across the room. "Howard!"
Somehow, amidst the screaming and chaos in the room and the gunshot that still seemed to ring everywhere and drown out everything else, Howard apparently heard her.
"We're a go, Peggy! Now!"
I finally caught sight of Steve then, laying on the floor without moving despite the flood of movement happening around him. My heart leapt into my throat, and I was about to shove Peggy off me and go to him again when, somehow, I was looking at the ceiling instead.
Peggy hovered over me and I moved to get up, but restraints slapped me into place as, finally, I realized what was happening.
I was in the supersoldier machine. Instead of Steve, Howard and Doctor Erskine's concoction was being pumped into my bloodstream while the one it was intended for, my wonderful boyfriend, lay dead or dying a few feet away.
For better or worse, the despair welling in my chest didn't have the chance to overtake me as a pain like nothing I'd ever felt completely took over every thought, sense, and feeling in my body. Somehow, I was on fire, and the metal box around me was closing in. My limbs were being ripped away one by one, my skin was stretching to the point of breaking, my blood was boiling-
I screamed, but it felt like a faraway version of me that did it. I wasn't in my own body anymore, rather looking down from somewhere else as my brain short circuited with every nerve ending screaming.
And then suddenly, I was back. The pain started to ebb, and I grit my teeth and focused on breathing and hanging onto survival no matter what it took. I would do it, I would survive this world-ending pain, and I would do it for Steve. And hopefully, by some insane miracle, he would do the same for me.
At last, the rest of the pain drained away, leaving me breathing heavily but otherwise feeling better than I ever had in my life. Slowly, I felt the contraption Howard had built tip upright, and my porthole viewing window revealed the room I'd just left.
I had no idea how long it had taken, but based on the chaos that still dominated the slightly more empty room I guessed it hadn't been too long. At last, the metal door opened, and I stumbled out. I looked down, intending to finally run to Steve, but he wasn't there.
"Y/N!"
"How do you feel?"
I turned to find Peggy and Howard, their voices respectively concerned and curious, then found I had to look down a little further than I ever had before. I blinked a few times, the world briefly spinning, and realized, somehow, I was taller than I'd been a few minutes ago.
"Do you think she can speak?" I heard Howard ask, leaning around me to talk to Peggy. "Maybe some of the muscle growth impacted her vocal cords-"
"Where's Steve?" I managed to ask, overcoming my shock and inadvertently answering Howard's question. He looked at me in surprise, then started dancing around me with scientific instruments and taking measurements, so I turned to Peggy.
"Y/N, are you alright? I-"
"Where is he, Peggy?"
She hesitated, then seemed to realize I was stubborn enough not to let this go until I got an answer. "A few of the soldiers we still trust took him to the hospital."
"Take me to him."
"Y/N, I really don't think-"
"Peggy." My best friend and I stood perfectly frozen as we held eye contact, Howard still moving all around me but neither of us paying him any attention. "I need to see Steve."
She sighed, then gave an abrupt nod. "Howard, if anyone asks, tell them where we've gone. And keep me updated on anything you find out."
"Hold on, I still need to-"
"You can do experiments on our friend later," she snapped. I gave her a grateful smile as I followed behind her, out of the room where the world had just upended itself completely. I loved Howard, but sometimes he didn't know the meaning of the word "boundary".
Still half in a daze, I followed Peggy to a car outside. She went around to the driver's side while I went to climb into the passenger's seat. I tried to pull the door open, something I'd done a thousand times before, but the door ripped off its hinges in my hand like it was made of paper. I stared at it blankly, trying to fight off the wave of shock threatening to totally overcome me.
"Y/N?"
I shook myself out of it, looking back up at Peggy.
"I'm fine."
We got a new car, and for the first part of our drive, I tried quietly testing out a few of my new limits. I could bend metal like it was nothing, and I was clearly stronger and more muscled than I'd been before the serum. Erskine's serum was a success; I was officially a supersoldier.
As we made our way through the busy streets of New York to the hospital, my mind wandered to other things. I glanced over at Peggy, white knuckled on the steering wheel while otherwise projecting outward calm.
"Why did you do it, Peggy?" I asked, unable to help the question from bursting out of me.
Peggy glanced over to me, then back to the road. She was silent for almost two full blocks before she finally answered.
"You were always our contingency plan," she started, her voice a little gravelly. "While you and Steve were having your last night of drinks, Howard and I had drinks of our own. He was worried about the serum falling into the wrong hands, especially after Colonel Phillips pushed for that absolute prat from training camp. We talked about it for some time, and neither of us could come up with a better option than you."
I didn't respond, instead opting to stare straight ahead as I tried to process everything Peggy had just told me. She gave me a few seconds, then continued.
"I'm sorry we never told you, Y/N," she said. "We didn't have much time, and honestly, it was never supposed to come to this."
I nodded, mostly to let her know I'd heard her. My brain was working overtime, but one question kept ringing through my mind.
"Why me?"
Peggy glanced at me a few times, splitting her attention between me and the road.
"Why you? I thought that would be rather self-evident."
She briefly turned her attention away from me as she at last pulled into a parking spot in front of the hotel. I started to shift in my seat, ready to just let the question keep echoing in my head while I ran to find Steve, but Peggy put a hand on my arm to stop me.
"Y/N, listen to me. You are just as good a choice for this serum as Steve. You're strong, kind, and a fundamentally good person- not only are we lucky to have you as the world's first supersoldier, but I'm lucky to have you as a friend. I know this must be overwhelming, and I'm sorry I put you in this situation without warning. But I need you to believe it when I say you are up to this task."
I took a deep breath as Peggy held my stare, willing myself to take in her words. I wanted to, but honestly now that we were at the hospital, I couldn't really think of much beyond Steve.
I gave Peggy a tight-lipped smile, then pulled my arm out of her grasp and moved for the car door. I nearly pulled this one off its hinges too, then remembered to be much, much more gentle than I'd normally be.
Peggy gave me a look as we got out of the car together and headed towards the hospital, but I pretended not to notice. Thankfully, she just let it go, and helped me get to Steve as quickly as possible.
When we arrived at his hospital room, he wasn't there. We'd been told he was in emergency surgery, and the doctors were currently fighting to save his life. I plopped down in the chair next to his bed and resolved to wait.
"He's not going to be back for some time, you know," Peggy said gently from her place by the door. "You might be waiting here for a while."
"Better than waiting in a lab while all the military execs talk about what to do with me now."
Peggy pursed her lips, but didn't voice whatever she was feeling. She just nodded, and came to take a seat by my side.
"Then I suppose I'm in for the long haul too."
****************
When they finally brought Steve back in, he was unconscious. Alive, to my massive relief, but unconscious and still not safe as he was fighting to recover from his injury and the resulting surgery. I didn't move an inch from my seat by his side.
Peggy stayed with me for a while, but eventually had to start working with and talking to various generals and officials again. None of them wanted to let me out in the field anyway, so I didn't have anyone challenging my decision to stay by Steve's side.
When I was alone with him, I talked to him, telling him about everything that had happened after he'd been shot and working through my own attempts at processing everything that had happened. I started exploring my powers in my own time too, within the confines of the room. I could bend the metal instruments left on the table in one corner, and could do more than double the number of pushups I'd been able to do before without breaking a sweat.
I was in the middle of testing whether I could jump high enough to touch the ceiling (yes) and then with how much of my arm I could touch it with when Peggy came back into the room. She grinned when she saw what I was doing, but I quickly stopped to look at her instead.
"Not going stir crazy, I hope?" she teased. I rolled my eyes.
"It's for science, Peggy. Come on."
She snorted, but didn't challenge my statement all the same. Instead, she crossed the room to take a seat beside Steve, next to the chair I usually sat in.
"How is he doing?" she asked softly, staring now at Steve instead of me. I sighed and went to sit next to her.
"Still fighting through his coma, as I'm sure you can see," I said. It had been just less than a week now, but Steve still hadn't woken up. "The doctors say his injuries are healing well, though, and they're hopeful that he'll wake up soon."
Peggy nodded, keeping her gentle stare on Steve for another minute longer, then at last turned to me. Her expression became much more serious, and I tried to brace myself for whatever she would say next.
"We need you back," she said bluntly, not bothering to beat around the bush. "I've worked with Howard to get permission for you to join us–meaning Howard and myself, under General Phillips–in the European theater. We don't have permission for more than just you being there yet, but this is the closest we've come to getting you cleared for active duty. If you stay, we may never get you out of a lab or off a stage again."
I frowned, processing her words. I hadn't realized there'd been a risk of being trapped in a lab or on a stage for the rest of the war, although if I'd given it a second of thought, I probably would have.
"I know you don't want to leave Steve," said Peggy, turning to look at him one last time. "I can't say I really want to either. But he wouldn't want you to be cooped up in here, when there's so much you could be doing out there."
I sighed, staring at Steve as I felt Peggy's eyes drilling into me. I knew she was right; Steve and I hadn't gone through everything we'd been through so far, both alone and together, just to stand by and do nothing if the opportunity came up for us to make a difference.
"Alright," I finally said, tearing my eyes away from Steve and hardening my resolve. "Let's do this, then."
Peggy smiled, and I didn't let myself look back as I followed her out of the room.
****************
The next few weeks were an absolute blur. Peggy (and Howard, whenever he was around) kept pushing for me to be allowed into combat, and just about every other top brass officer pushed back. Despite the fact they refused to clear me, I'd been kept plenty busy, running around with Peggy doing all the codebreaking, organizational, and action-coordinating duties we'd done before and then some. Whenever I finally collapsed onto my bedroll for a few hours of sleep at the end of the day, I basically slept like the dead.
Still, I jolted up quickly enough when Peggy shook my shoulder just past two in the morning.
"What do you want?" I mumbled, the words only half-intelligible thanks to the sleep slurring my words. After the initial adrenaline that I was being attacked had faded, the drowsiness had swept back in with a vengeance.
"Some soldiers just returned to camp," she said, her voice a hissing whisper. The urgency and the secrecy made me sit up a little straighter, some of the sleepiness fading away. "They're what's left of a regiment captured by Hydra, the rest of whom are currently being held at a base some distance into enemy territory."
"Okay..."
"Since Steve's talked to me about Bucky, I'm assuming you know about him too?"
"...Of course. Obviously I never met him, but... Steve talks about him all the time. Why?"
"His regiment–him included–is the one being held by Hydra."
I shot up, finally fully awake. "What?"
"Bucky, along with most of the other soldiers in his regiment, are being held at a Hydra base not far from our current position. While this is obviously awful-"
"If anything happens to him, Steve-"
"I think it could also prove exactly the opportunity we need."
My eyes snapped to Peggy, not even bothering to hide how crazy I thought she was as I looked at her.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"Y/N, you are being wasted sitting in this camp doing behind the scenes duties, even more than you were before you took the serum. Neither of us wants to risk everything and get court-martialed for something ridiculous, no matter how tempting it may be. But going after Bucky and his regiment, going on a mission to save them... that might be worth it. And it might be everything we need to get everyone to stop second-guessing your importance in combat."
"Are you suggesting we go rogue, somehow sneak across enemy lines, and that I then go single-handedly into an active Hydra base to free almost an entire captured regiment?"
"And destroy the Hydra base in the process, yes."
I sighed, staring blankly at a spot on my blankets for a minute, then swung my legs out of bed and looked at Peggy.
"Alright, I'm in. It's been a little too long since I've done something stupid and reckless anyway."
Just under three hours later, I found myself jumping out of a plane towards a Hydra base, in the middle of enemy territory. Famous last words, I guess, saying I hadn't been doing anything reckless and then jumping straight into the most reckless thing I'd ever done.
I landed in the Hydra base behind a cluster of tanks, then managed to sneak my way inside. Thankfully, I knew enough about interior layouts to make a pretty good guess of where prisoners might be kept, and it wasn't long before I found the men from the missing regiment in a series of cages.
One of them was talking to a guard, thankfully the only one in the room, until I knocked the guard out.
"And who are you?" asked the man behind bars, sounding pleasantly surprised.
"Captain America," I said simply, standing tall with my shoulders back. That had been the planned name for Steve, and the name Peggy and I insisted on keeping, despite the number of male higher-ups who didn't like a woman having that title.
"Well, Captain, any chance you could get us out of these cages?"
"That's what I'm here for," I said, quickly setting to work. "Do you know a man named Sergeant Barnes?"
"Yeah, but he's not here. Some of the guards took him away not long ago. They've been running experiments in rooms on the other side of the compound."
I swore under my breath, then stepped back as the cage door swung open. I looked the man in the eye as he met my stare with a new respect.
"What's your name?"
"Tim Dugan."
"Alright Dugan, do you think you can get these men out of here and on the path back to friendly territory?"
"With the door wide open like this? Not gonna be a problem, sweetheart."
I narrowed my eyes at him, but he just grinned back, no hint of the condescension usually associated with that nickname anywhere on his face. Instead, he looked excited, the wild gleam I'd seen in my own and Steve's eyes before shining back at me. I sighed.
"Alright, good, then get on it. I've got a sergeant to save."
"See you on the other side," he said with a nod. I nodded back, then turned and sprinted deeper into the base.
After ducking and dodging lots of armed guards, as well as knocking out a few when I accidentally barged into the wrong room, I finally flung open a door to find a man strapped on the table in front of me. He was alone in the room, and to my relief, he matched the appearance of the man I'd seen in almost every photograph Steve had before joining the military.
"Sergeant Barnes?" I asked, not waiting for an answer as I moved to start unstrapping him from the table. He looked up at me, bewildered and clearly exhausted.
"And who are you?"
"Y/N Y/L/N, otherwise known as Captain America. I'm Steve's girlfriend."
Bucky's face lit up at that, the suspicion that had been building in his eyes disappearing in an instant.
"Steve has a girlfriend? Now I know you're lying to me."
I glanced back at him to find a crooked smile on his face, and I couldn't help returning one of my own. I undid the last strap, then moved around the table to help Bucky stand.
"Come on, let's get you out of here. Then you can give Steve shit to his face."
Bucky chuckled, but it quickly turned into a wheeze, which made me incredibly nervous. I subtly shifted him so I was taking more of his weight, but before we could make much progress to the door, it came flying open on its own.
"A valiant effort at a rescue attempt. Too bad it is going to be in vain."
We both froze in our tracks, looking up to find ourselves face to face with a man with goggles and a lab coat, standing tall in the doorway and towering over us, one of the biggest guns I'd ever seen in his hands leveled right at us.
"We had heard the Allies created a supersoldier, despite our best efforts to stop them. We hadn't realized it was a woman."
He scoffed the last word, and I scowled, more than ready to put this punk in his place. Before I could, however, he pushed a setting on the weapon, and it began firing up.
"Fortunately, now that you have come right to us, there will be plenty of time for us to figure out just what made the Allies decide to send you into combat."
I frowned, mostly ignoring him while I looked for any way out of this situation. Punching this guy straight in the face felt like a good option, but despite my super strength and speed he could probably shoot me before I got to him, and since this was my first combat mission I had no idea just how well my new super-self held up against bullets, let alone whatever the hell this thing would fire.
As my brain ran through possibilities searching for options, the man turned his gaze to Bucky, an expression of mock-sympathy on his face.
"Now that we have her, Sergeant Barnes, we unfortunately no longer have use for you."
Bucky tensed beside me, and my full focus snapped back to the situation at hand rather than ways to get out of it as the crazy gun before us started heating up, whirring like it was about to fire. It was leveled right at Bucky's head.
I swore, time slowing down as I came to a conclusion. My only real option was to push Bucky out of the way and take the shot for him. I'd just have to hope my super-metabolism also equalled super-healing, and try to take it in the shoulder instead of the head or chest. Then, I'd have to find a way to get up and keep swinging, and hopefully Bucky had enough energy left in him to help me get the gun. Otherwise I'd just have to figure it out myself.
I started to move, ready to block Bucky and hopefully come up swinging, refusing to dwell on how often the word "hope" appeared in my plan, but then the gun went flying across the room all on its own.
For half a second, the only thought in my head was: Do I have magic powers now too?
Then, a metal fist appeared in the doorway, absolutely creaming the guy who'd been blocking it before, dropping him unconscious to the ground like a sack of potatoes.
Bucky and I looked up in sync, confused and (on my part) ready to fight a new threat, only to see a metal man step into view. His eyes glowed blue, and it looked like a big suit of armor come to life. I shifted on my feet, trying to determine whether this was a friend or if I needed to attack this thing, and then its face lifted up, revealing another, human face beneath.
"Oh great, you two have met now. I don't know whether to be happy or brace myself for just how much more shit I'm about to take as a result."
"Steve!" I cried, rushing towards him and wrapping him in the tightest hug my supersoldier strength would allow. Thankfully, the metal suit meant he was fine, despite the enthusiasm. Behind me, I heard Bucky thump into the table as he caught himself after my support disappeared, but I couldn't bring myself to care.
"Hey, sweetheart. I missed you."
"I missed you too," I said, pulling back from the hug to kiss him, hard. For the first time in our relationship I had to get up on my toes to kiss him, even with the extra super-height, which felt incredibly weird. After a second I pulled back, giving his suit a once-over and raising an eyebrow.
"So what exactly is this?"
"A supersuit," he replied with a grin. "Howard's apparently been working on one for a while, but after I got shot he made it more of a priority."
"After you got what?"
I turned to see Bucky behind me, still leaning on the table, looking at Steve with a mix of concern, fury, and exasperation. Steve moved past me to go wrap his friend in a bearhug, and I caught a grin on his face as he went. Bucky didn't look amused, but he also didn't have the strength to do anything about Steve in a metal suit hugging him for dear life.
"Don't worry about it, Buck," he said, still grinning, before turning back to me. Bucky kept frowning between the two of us, but Steve and I both ignored it. "So what now?"
"Now we get out of here, and destroy the base on our way out," I said simply. Steve beamed, and even Bucky's expression turned slightly more pleasant at the thought. "Let's do this."
Like we'd spent our whole lives working together, we moved out of the room in perfect sync. Steve supported Bucky, following right behind me as we moved through the base. We threw stealth out the window now that we had everything we needed, and whenever we came across someone who might try to stop us, I knocked them out before they could so much as reach for their weapon. When the occasional guard got past me, Steve easily took care of them on cleanup.
We planted bombs on support pillars and in power rooms as we gradually made our way towards the exit, then pushed the button to start the short timers once we made it outside. We sprinted for the treeline, Steve in his suit keeping pace with me and my superspeed even though he was carrying Bucky, and made it about a hundred yards into the woods before everything behind us exploded.
The three of us stopped, turning back to watch the wreckage we'd just caused. I couldn't help smiling, since the destruction of that base not only meant the destruction of a terrible Hydra facility, but also a successful mission under my belt we could throw in the face of anyone who doubted me.
"Damn. That's sure a pretty sight."
The three of us whirled around as one to find Dugan, the soldier I'd met earlier, and the rest of the regiment standing behind us. Steve got into a fighting stance, but Bucky and I just smiled.
"I let you out and you only got this far? You might have some skills to work on, Dugan," I said, beaming at him nonetheless. He smiled right back.
"Unlike your trio, I had to get the whole regiment out without being caught. Besides, I can't say I mind how this timing worked out."
"Yeah, me neither."
After Bucky was welcomed back into the relieved arms of his regiment and we got Steve introduced, our group slowly started making our way back to friendly territory and the familiar camp waiting beyond. It took a little over a day, and I had to step into the action a few more times to deal with barriers trying to keep people moving between sides of the war, but eventually, we made it back.
As soon as we came within sight of the camp, we could hear cheering. People flocked out to see us, beaming as we staggered in triumphantly, arms around each other and heads held high. Steve stood on my right, Bucky on my left, Dugan and the rest of his squad right behind us. I smiled as Peggy approached, and I swear I could feel puzzle pieces falling into place.
"Let's hear it for Captain America!" cried Steve, smiling at me as he let up the shout. Everyone cheered, and towards the back of the crowd I could see General Phillips with his arms crossed but a smile on his face nonetheless. It disappeared the second he caught me looking, but I'd known it was there.
Steve wrapped his arm a little more tightly around me, his suit currently off and hidden somewhere safe, and I leaned down to kiss him. The crowd cheered even louder, and in that moment, I knew for certain that nothing Hydra or the Axis powers threw at us could touch us.
Captain America, the Iron Man, Agent Carter, and the Howling Commandos were about to turn the world on its head, and no one would ever be able to stand in our way.
Fourteen-year-old you had always been curious. You explored every inch of the house from the moment you could walk. You couldn't even count on both hands the amount of times your father had found you messing around in his workshop. But even if you were just sitting there, not touching anything and being good for once, he still sent you out.
Until the day you decided you wouldn't just sit there and not touch anything. Until the day you decided to explore the workshop for real.
You didn't know why, if it was out of spite for being constantly ignored or just because you were bored out of your mind, but this time you searched every inch of the workshop for something to do. You looked through blueprints, you pretended to drive the cars, and you even fiddled with some of the helper robots dotted around.
"(Y/n), what are you doing?" A stern voice asked.
You paused what you were doing and slowly spun around. "Good afternoon, father dearest."
There was a heavy sigh as he approached. "I told you to never come in here."
"I'm a kid." You shrugged. "It's not in my nature to sit in one place for longer than an hour."
"And all the places you could have wandered to, you come to the one I expressly tell you to avoid."
"Pretty much."
Tony looked away, hating the fact you were almost exactly like him. The attitude was the worst since the pair of you could never have a decent conversation without one making a comment that set off an argument or disagreement every five minutes.
"Why can't I just watch?" You asked. "It's not like I'm going to sabotage your latest invention or paint the Porsche pink."
He gave you a deadpan look. "That's exactly what you'd do. Just go, (Y/n)."
You jumped up from your seat. "What, not even a please?"
"(Y/n)."
"Yeah, yeah. Fine. I'm going. So long. Arrivederci. Adios. Au Revoir. Sayōnara." You continued pouring out the flat goodbyes as you left the workshop. "See you in hell."
You knew a fourteen-year-old like yourself shouldn't be saying that kind of thing to a parent but you just hated that he never spared you a glance when you needed him. For once in your life you just wanted to bond with your dad. Was that too much to ask?
You moved to the library after that, hoping something in there would help with the boredom instead. At least ten minutes of aimlessly walking between aisles turned up nothing and you were about to leave again until you finally spotted something worthwhile.
"Hello..." You mused, walking over to a little box tucked away in a corner.
You hadn't seen it before which was intriguing enough in itself and a new sense of excitement filled you as you skipped over. It wasn't even locked, like it was just waiting for you.
The child-like wonder in your eyes lit up when you saw dozens upon dozens of old journals lying inside. They were dusty, possibly decades old, and bound with leather straps. You picked one up, labelled 'H.S - 1927'.
"1927?" You mumbled, curious.
You opened up to the first page and your eyes widened to twice their usual size when you realized H.S meant Howard Stark. These were your grandfather's, the current one being from when he was only ten years old.
"No way..." You grinned, putting it down and picking up another one from 1930.
You kept flicking through, discovering parts of his life you never even dreamed were possible. Much like your dad, he seemed to be a genius too, even from age ten. However, you eventually found something that confused you.
It was from a journal in 1940. The entry described being approached by one Chester Phillips after being attacked by something called 'HYDRA'. Apparently he agreed to join the 'SSR'. You moved on through the years until he eventually referred to the SSR as SHIELD, something he helped found. You could barely believe or understand what this organization was. "Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division." You read with a confused face. "I guess someone really wanted to spell SHIELD."
As you read more about this extra-government agency, you couldn't help getting excited again, as well as confused. The journals ended in 1991 which was when he died, and you quickly gathered some of them up, eager to show your dad what you'd found.
You ran all the way to the workshop and typed in one of the passwords you'd seen people use. The sound of the door swinging open caused Tony to look up.
"(Y/n)!"
You grinned, hiding the journals behind your back. "I found something."
"I'm busy."
"But this is-"
"-I'm. Busy."
"Dad, come on!" You begged. "There was this box in the library and-"
He dropped what he was fiddling with and sighed heavily. "Not now."
Your face fell knowing that he really didn't care about what you had to say. You looked down and bit your lip as a tear came to your eye.
"Sorry." You mumbled, turning around and leaving.
-
You stood in front of Fury, trying to remain as calm as humanly possible. You were still terrified, wondering how they found you, but also intrigued. You knew they existed, you had for two years now, but you never could have imagined they'd come to you. There was no doubt they paid your dad a visit after his Iron Man fiascos, but why you?
"Can we, uh... Can we chill on the intimidation?" You asked, smiling nervously and glancing back at the armed agents.
"Do you promise to cooperate?" Fury asked in turn.
I live on cheap groceries and isolation. You really think I'd try and fight?"
"One can never be too careful."
You scoffed, again motioning around you. "Clearly."
He smirked a little at that and nodded in understanding. With a wave of his hand, the agents backed off and left the two of you in the warehouse alone. You bounced on the balls of your feet, both awkward and nervous at the same time.
"So..." You looked around. "SHIELD."
"Indeed." He started to walk around the room, inspecting different parts of it. "Did you know your grandfather Howard Stark was a founding member?"
"Yeah."
"Then you know you're a SHIELD legacy."
"Fancy way to put it." You muttered, crossing your arms.
"What else do you know of us?"
"A fair bit. I found out most of what I do from my grandfather's journals. I know it started as the SSR, responsible for creating Captain America and all that stuff. Then it moved on, became a fancy name and a counter-terrorism intelligence agency tasked with maintaining both national and global security. My grandfather thought it could be the greatest military force on earth even though any ordinary person has no idea it exists."
Fury nodded along, seemingly impressed. "Not bad, Ms. Stark."
You took a seat, your leg bouncing a little. "So, what do you want from me?"
"Like I said, cooperation."
"Yeah, I got that bit, but for what?"
"Your father wants you back. We'd like to grant that wish."
Silence fell.
You looked down, fiddling with your fingers. You thought about it constantly, going back. In fact, you once packed to do so, but ultimately backed out.
"No." You spoke up. "I don't think that's a good idea."
Fury stopped walking around and turned to face you fully. "He informed us about Obadiah Stane's threat. I can assure you you'll have protection." "No one can do that. I don't know how many Obadiah told about me, but I know I'll never truly be safe. I don't want to be stuck in that house like a damsel in distress when I can be here looking out for myself. With him, it's dangerous. Alone, no one but me gets hurt." You sighed after, trying not to think about it too long. "How was he?"
"Stubborn."
A smile graced your features as you looked up again. "No change there."
"Yes, it seems to be a trait you have in common."
"Yeah, well, we are related. Is he... Is he okay? I mean, last week with the Expo and the Hammer drones... It was a mess."
"A lot happened in your absence." He stated. "You're familiar with the arc reactor?"
"I noticed it, yes."
"Well the palladium core was damaged, pouring toxins in the blood, killing him. But we solved that problem."
"What?" You sat up so quickly you almost fell off your seat. "But palladium has no suitable replacement, surely. The power required to power the suit isn't something you can just find on the elemental table."
"That's why we told him he could discover a new one himself."
"A new what? A new element?" It was hard to process and your face scrunched up as you tried to think clearly. "I don't... How..."
"Badassium."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"That's what he named it."
You opened your mouth to reply but just sighed. "Naturally."
"Ms. Potts was appointed CEO of Stark Industries. Also during this reckless time, your father and Colonel Rhodes had a small altercation. Then the Hammer drones. I believe your father and Ms. Potts are a thing now."
"'A thing'?" You questioned, trying not to laugh.
It was like being at a high school sleepover. You felt like you were gossiping. But you tried not to focus on this since other emotions and thoughts were circling in your head like a toy train.
You were scared for your dad since he'd almost died. You wouldn't have ever known and probably not got a chance to say goodbye. And of course he acted out like an idiot, making sudden decisions and fighting his friends, even Rhodey who was like an uncle to you.
But at least he was alright now. You still couldn't believe he'd named his element badassium. That was such a Tony Stark thing to do.
You were glad Pepper got to be CEO, though. If anyone deserved it, it was her. She worked so incredibly hard, especially when trying to carry the company as well as look after you and assist Tony all day. You remembered being told that you'd be the CEO one day but you were honestly glad not to be.
From what you gathered, running Stark Industries led to bad parenting. You'd heard your dad complain about his own father abandoning him because of it and ironically he'd done the exact same to you as you grew up.
You were also happy that he and Pepper were together now. You'd always sensed something between them and she was the only one able to put up with his shittyness.
"See? He's doing fine without me." You said, hoping your point was proved.
Fury didn't seem too convinced but didn't pry at the subject, instead noticing the jet in the corner of the room. "Did you make this?"
Your attention moved to the object and you shrugged. "Fixed it, more like. I don't know who left it here, but it was abandoned."
"Like this warehouse?"
"Pretty much."
"Did you know it's illegal for somebody with no flight experience to use it."
You stood up, pacing to distract yourself. "I actually didn't. I guess I'll have to cancel my afternoon flight around NY."
He nodded in agreement. "Yes, that would be best. It's impressive, though. And the AI we found guarding the place. You've got the brain of a Stark."
You scoffed at that. "Yeah, apparently so." There was a silence that followed. You got nervous again, not knowing where this was going. You felt uneasy as Fury studied your ever move, seemingly thinking up a plan or something agent-y.
"I suggest a compromise." He finally said.
You stopped pacing and looked at him. "Okay...?"
"You don't wish to return home, correct?"
"Yeah, rather not."
"In that case, I ask you to join SHIELD."
"I'm sorry?"
"We can protect you or not, whichever you wish, and your talents can be used to help others.
"There are SHIELD transport and weapons that need consistent upgrades to keep up with the times. You'd be the perfect fit judging by the look of the jet." You thought about it long and hard. You sort of just froze in place as you weighed the pros and cons of joining them. You'd be stable, have somewhere safe and comfortable to do what you did best, and you'd also have freedom. You didn't have to go home if you didn't want to.
 "I want a new life." You conditioned. "A new name, background, the whole deal. I don't want to be (Y/n) Stark."
 Fury nodded. "Done."
 "Right." You mimicked the action, surprised there weren't any arguments about it. "So, uh, what now?"
 "Pack what you need and we'll take you to the Triskelion. We'll set you up there and you can fabricate the life you've always wanted."
 "That easy, huh?"
 "That easy."
 "Well then..." You took a long breath. "I'm in."
 He looked rather smug about that. "And this place?"
 You frowned. "What do you mean?"
 "What do you want to do with it?"
 "Oh. Uh..." You looked at the old space, finding little memories from the various moments you'd had there. "I'll stay here. Or at least use it as a vacation spot."
