Saltburn time

First and foremost, Rosamund Pike is Mother.

Secondly, I'd like to talk about Harry Potter in Saltburn. Allow me to preface this by confirming that JKR is an absolute shithead and can sit on a hot poker.

So throughout the summer, we see Felix, Venetia and Farleigh passing around a copy of the final Harry Potter book. It makes a huge amount of sense for them to read it! They're all in that strange stage of arrested development one forms at uni, because you're an adult living independently for most of the year, but then you come back to your parents' house and return to a teenage state. Surrounded by physical reminders of your childhood, you may well regress and re-engage with old media. I think many people have returned home and listened to CDs or flicked through forgotten video games. So there's a sense of nostalgia.

It also helps to ground Saltburn in the mid '00s. The hiddeous fashions are hilarious, the phones are bricks, and everyone was reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final installation in the saga. Given that Felix, Venetia and Farleigh are in their late teens/early 20s, it would make sense for them to have grown up reading those books. Again, I can't be the only person to interact with media I've "aged out" of because, well, I've invested so much in the series. I imagine a fair number of people who read the final book(s) weren't officially part of the target audience, but read it because they felt nostalgic or curious about how the story ended.

Finally, there are some obvious comparisons between Harry Potter and Saltburn. Both take place primarily in a beautiful old building and feature a character (Harry and Oliver) who wants to join a different world (magical/extreme wealth and status). You could also compare the characters of James Potter and Severus Snape with Felix and Oliver. You have the popular, desirable person, and then the jealous, slimy genius. There are classical allusions in Harry Potter and JKR actually read classics and French at Exeter uni. The joke about Cerberus, guardian of the underworld and terror of 11 year olds being named "Fluffy" is pretty hilarious. Farleigh reads English at Oxford, so he's going to get those references... even if he's not especially literate or into books.

Oliver, of course, doesn't read Harry Potter. It's too pedestrian and reminds him of the life he's trying to leave behind by cutting ties with his parents. Oliver is a total snob, and wouldn't deign to interact with anything like that. I don't really think Oliver even likes reading, to be honest. Do we ever see him with a book? He does it before uni and completes the reading list, yet when he mentions this to the professor, the professor is shocked. Then he ignores Oliver. Oliver only does things which he thinks will benefit him, other than when his sensory, animalistic, sexual desires finally come through. See - fucking the graves.

Anyway, you should watch Saltburn. It's excellent! Beautiful! The cast is gorgeous and talented! Everyone is psychotic!

Spring… Harry thought, would be forever associated with Ginny. It reminded him of the sunny afternoons by the lake, chilling with a fresh breeze swooping over them from the lake. Ginny resting in his arms, talking excitedly about quidditch… her lips so kissable, her body so soft and sweet as a comfortable weight against him, a flowery scent in his nose.  The cold winter weather he was currently in was a far cry from it. The breeze was biting cold, the sun had been absent for days. There was little to comfort him as he sat outside of the tent, keeping watch. His mind inevitably strayed to her on these long watches. It was his comfort then and he tried to find it again but with every memory of her bright eyes, freckles, lips… was the stinging knowledge he’d likely never hold her in his arms again and someone else would have the honour of pulling her into their embrace on a nice spring day.

To Harry’s surprise, a solid third of sixth seventh year Slytherins stayed seated after McGonagall’s announcement.

“Aren’t you going to... you know, leave?” he addressed the remaining students.

A sixth year Slytherin rolled her eyes. “Nah,” she said simply, stumping Harry into silence.

“You know that if you stay, you’ll be forced to fight your families?” Hermione pushed carefully.

The Slytherin girl snorted. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to punch Great Auntie Gemima,” she said, running her fingers through her short spiky hair.

“Literally the only reason I came back to Hogwarts this year was because I was hoping you’d come here and give me a legitimate excuse to fistfight my cousins,” added a second Slytherin with a savage smile that sent shivers down Harry’s spine.

“If you want me gone, Potter, you’ll have to physically force me out,” added a third Slytherin, giving Harry a warning look. “I’ve been waiting for this for years.”

Your hand in mine

Ginny's hand shifted down his forearm as she changed position and then both her hands wrapped around his. He turned his head to look at her.

She was looking off to the side, watching her parents decide what casket Fred should be buried in. Though she was not crying, her expression was telling.

He pressed his lips against her temple and lingered, inhaling the smell of her shampoo. He felt some of the tension leave her body. He sat up a little straighter again and followed her gaze towards George. Pale and unmoving, seated firmly between his father and Bill.

"Oh, are you two…?" Ron asked as he walked up to them, eyeing their clutched hands.

"Are we what?" Ginny asked as her head turned towards her youngest brother.

Hermione walked up behind him but said nothing.

"Well… you know?" he asked.

Harry raised an eyebrow. "Why wouldn't we be?"

"No reason," Ron told him. "It's just that last year you said you knew you didn't have a future with her."

"Things change," Harry retorted.

Ron turned to Hermione. "And he definitely looked as though Quidditch had been cancelled for life when he told us he knew she didn't expect to marry him." Ron almost smiled as he teased.

Harry moved to stand up and retort but Ginny's hands remained tightly around his so he did not manage to stand, and Ron continued on with Hermione in tow, who was shaking her head. By the time he thought of any retort, Ron had already gone into the other room.

Feeling a bit embarrassed, his gaze danced back to Ginny, whose eyes were softly focused on him. Her hand lifted and cupped his cheek and she kissed him, firmly planting her lips on his. She leaned away and kept looking at him, her gaze warm and comforting. Her hand returned on top of his, and both of them looked back at the people at the table.

"I am glad all of you were with him when he died," Ginny said softly. "I would have hated for him to die alone."

"He was laughing with Percy, did they tell you that?" he asked her, hoping it would bring her comfort.

She looked at him. "About the minister? Yeah, they said. I’m glad about that, I suppose.”

He put his other hand on top of hers.

“Are you coming to help open the Wheezes again?” Ginny asked him.

“George said he needed the laugh. That the people do.”

“I’d be happy to,” he replied, looking over at George, looking so lost without his twin.

Ginny scooted a bit closer to him and tucked her head against his shoulder. “Were you worried about not marrying me?”

“I never said such a thing,” he said far too quickly. Though she made no sound, he could tell she was laughing by the light shake of her shoulders. He tucked his head against hers. “You knew what you were doing when you kissed me like that.”

She hummed in reply. “Maybe I did.”

Friendly reminder that Fred and George literally tried to murder another student for trying to take House points from them

Like I know we apparently don't give a damn about NPCs in Harry Potter, but it's insane to me how no one acknowledges how fucking vile the Weasley twins were

(unrelated but it's also very funny how self-righteous Fred and George acted over Percy being a "git" and how they were convinced of their own moral superiority because they were on the good side, when I'm convinced Percy would never have done something so horrible)

Same goes for Harry and Ron mind you. The level of apathy and cruelty they demonstrate is CRAZY like they legit do not give a fuck. And yeah, I wasn't much better than them as a teenager when it came to people I didn't like, but surely that is something that should be addressed by the narrative?? By anyone? Hermione gets like 0,5 brownie point for suggesting that maybe they should tell someone (YES??) but considering she does jackshit about it that doesn't exactly endear her to me

Despite how many times Slytherin is said to be the evil house while Rowling glorifies the Gryffindor House (and she absolutely does, there are many examples in the books), the murder attempts between the two houses have been pretty one-sided (Fred&George to Montague and Sirius to Snape, not to mention the Weasley twins and Sirius were both 100% unapologetic.

Edit: yes, I was intentionally and graciously omitting Harry's attempt towards Draco in HP6 because even though using an unknown spell was unbelievably stupid, Harry had no idea Sectumsempra would do that and he felt awful about it + Draco did try to Crucio him. I'm watching you, though, Harry. You got over it a lil' too quickly when Ginny defended you.)

Well, Crabbe did try to kill the trio in HP7 , though 1) it was in the context of the war, they weren't exactly students anymore, but most importantly 2) the event is treated with the appropriate amount of horror for the situation

I think it's really fucked up that no one seems to find it a problem or even remember it but hey that's just me!

Read a lot of snarries at this point, like a lot. I think I have a preference for certain types of tropes for snarries now. Same with Tomarry.

Needs more humor fics for both pairings though. There can never be enough soulmate AUs or courtship fics for those two pairings.
