lena is really *really* into the idea of fucking an alien
sometimes when lena is bored at her desk, on a conference call with the board, listening to her mother emasculate yet another yale-bred, early 20s nepotism hire in the hallway, her mind wanders. meanders, really. it's a lesson in imagination. a practice in her academic deductive reasoning. one of those exercises designed to fight dementia, she's inclined to believe. anyways, she wanders about what it would be like to fuck an alien.
don't be like that. it's not crass. it's a scientific pursuit.
for instance, would it be sexual or asexual reproduction? sexual reproduction would make more sense, and surely the universe is sensible. it would promote genetic diversity. and then, what kind? syngamy or conjugation? fertilization was the most common in multicellular sexual populations, lena has often reasoned. (see, this isn't horny. many of these words put you right to sleep, didn't they?) then there's the types of syngamy, of course: isogamy, heterogamy, and oogamy. but she doesn't really need to get into gametes here. size, number, maintenance. the question she's pondering while jess is listing off her jampacked schedule is how different would an alien's physiology end up being, sexually speaking? would they feel pleasure? that wasn't common on earth. how would fertilization work? penetration? on all fours, perhaps?
hm. or would none of that even matter? would it be purely for the experience of interspecies connection? of finding common ground with a creature so distinct from you, it could almost be argued as a matter of say, quantum entanglement. no matter how many stars separated you, here you were. touching. looking. intertwining. two materials from totally different galaxies, the products of millions of years of formation, evolution, coming, coming together as one.
"mrs. luthor?" the tentative voice of her assistant rings out.
lena drops her pen to her desk. she'd been absentmindedly doodling. it's the super crest.
hm.
"kara danvers is here to see you."
"send her up," lena replies, careful in her tone, swiveling her chair towards the blinding windows of her office. up towards the sky, the heavens and far beyond.
if only someone, someone she knew personally, an alien, would be so inclined as to humor her questions. or even a physical demonstration, perhaps? was that really so hard?

Question: if you were one of the Supergirl writers and had been tasked with explaining how or why Lena didn’t know Kara was Supergirl (given how generally obvious it would be when Lena— the world’s smartest woman— has interacted with both Kara and SG) would you have written something fundamentally different than what the show decided to go with?
i couldn’t sleep this morning, suddenly remembered this ask, and decided i desperately needed to answer it.
so my absolute favorite explanation for this was in "The Love of Forgetting" by KL Morgan. i know it would've been extremely difficult to execute on film, but i would've really liked if the explanation had been that kara used cloaking tech or the "image inducer" and that it slightly changed her face. i thought this was SO smart in the fanfic, and one of the few explanations i could actually buy; that lena doesn't recognize kara because they LITERALLY don't look the same. just both blonde, fit, and beautiful, but not the same faces. it would've been amazing if they'd just used her stunt double, but then you wouldn't have your star actress in the dramatic scenes, so. i get it.
the only other explanation i liked was for superman. i'd think i'd seen a post on here about it, but it was the idea that no one THOUGHT superman had an alter ego. no one imagined that he would pretend to be human in his downtime and hold down a job and have friends. no one was looking for superman in the real world, so no one saw the similarities between he and clark kent. that might get us to lena not recognizing kara, but my god... the evidence was abundant and insurmountable on the show which leads us to fanfic's most popular explanation...
denial. i think this one treads water a bit because we know lena's had a highly traumatic, dysfunctional upbringing. they even show us that her one other friend CANONICALLY GIVEN, andrea, lied to her and betrayed her. she just doesn't want to see it. we also see her, quite regularly, show a form of disappointment with this highly idealized concept of supergirl. she moved to national city for her. does quite a lot to get her attention and impress her. and then still believes that supergirl doesn't trust her, that she can't move past her last name. "never meet your heroes." i think maybe denial might stop her from thinking her only friend in national city and second in her life (maybe third if you cound sam) would be SO duplicitous for four years, even if lena did see all the signs (the most egregious of which to me was Supergirl SAYING HER NAME WAS KARA!) it's just extremely difficult for me to believe that a smart woman like cat grant would figure it out but not lena, so it really leaves the only explanation is emotional for lena, which sort of tracks (but not really.)
we know the show dragged it out for years because it was the most important (and only) emotional element to the show, which to me is a critique of how little they managed to build for kara than anything reasonable about lena being unable to see it. lena "finding out" was always going to be a seasonal arc, but they kept pushing it off while failing to make us care about anything else in the plot. then it's this massive amount of time that's passed but a genius hasn't guessed, but EVERYONE ON THE SHOW INCLUDING CHILDREN, have guessed kara is supergirl. it was never going to make sense. what i would've fundamentally done differently is known how to write a la ali adler in season 1 and given us real conflict, stakes, character development, etc. for kara that didn't weight her conflict with lena SO heavily that it had to be drawn out until the show was literally ending.

I love your pinned ficlet because Lena is typically such a hyper-focused workaholic it really sells how catastrophically horny she must be to daydream at such length while at work. Hope Kara helps release her from her horny prison!
'artificial intelligence' is the only subject any reporter has asked her about for the better part of the last twelve months. generative AI, to be specific. it's tiresome. luthorcorp has been using AI, or applied statistics as lena would rather refer to it, for the last decade. incredibly expensive to develop in house and rife with issues ranging from proprietary data misuse to perpetuating biases to data hallucination to ethical misconduct, it's never been an easy subject to broach. and it's never been a hotter topic. it's a bit of a minefield for her to speak on, especially on how luthorcorp uses it, and she's loathe to engage publicly on the topic if she doesn't have to.
nonetheless. she's bored. she's passively watching morgan edge have a histrionic episode in one of their shared board meetings. she's idly working on her tech pad, stencil moving bits of data around as she plays with a chat bot she's been training for the last week. it's a chat bot specifically trained on transcripts of supergirl's interviews. hundreds of them. it's a chat bot that actually mimics supergirl. pretends to be her.
no reason why, really. just a bit of fun in her downtime.
maybe she'd been musing about what all she could get supergirl to say to her. maybe she'd wondered how supergirl might react in specific instances. specific to lena instances.
morgan shouts the word 'FUCK' across the conference bridge, and lena continues to try different text inputs.
lena: Supergirl, if I were to wear a deep cut dress, would you prefer that over a pant suit?
Supergirl.AI: Oh, golly, Ms. Luthor. That's hard to say.
typical. so deflecting.
lena: What color do you think I look best in?
Supergirl.AI: Uh, hm, let me think. Red?
ever bashful.
"Lena, don't you have something to say on this flagrant misapplication of our budget dollars?" Edge rings across her virtual meeting. "This is not what I signed on for."
"I'm sorry, Edge, you're cutting out, can you repeat that?"
edge turns a lovely shade of carmine. speaking of.
lena: If I were to take you on a date, what kind of restaurant would you like to go to?
Supergirl.AI: Of course, I would love potstickers!
wait a minute.
oh. oh.
fuck.

I just read your post regarding Lena’s inability to figure out Kara’s true identity and really loved your musings on the subject. Its a topic I see tackled in a lot of fanfics and usually with more depth and plausibility than the show ever gave us tbh.
I will say that the sick, evil, twisted part of my brain would LOVE to read a story similar to the plot line of the Identity Crisis comics: specifically where the JL mindwipes a villain (and subsequently Batman) when their secret identities are discovered. Like, imagine J’onn, Alex, et al get it into their heads that S2 Lena isn’t to be trusted and is a potential liability to Kara should she ever discover the Kara is Supergirl. So a suggestion is made about “altering” Lena’s mind in such a way to prevent her from putting two and two together: that Kara and Supergirl are the same person. I know it’s wildly OOC (and a very messed up premise), but like… just imagine Kara trying to reveal her identity to Lena and Lena still being unable to process it. THEN imagine Kara finding out what her friends and family did to her best friend (the same friend she’s been lying to for years) all in the name of “protecting” her. The angst just writes itself, no?
this is another excellent interpretation of how the show could've explained Genius Lena Luthor's inability to perform simple AI facial recognition. however it's funny you go angst because as i was reading this, i fully went comedy, like in the first men in black and how they have to keep wiping that poor morgue woman's memory. like there's 18 different security incidents at the DEO because kara keeps taking off her glasses to clean them at lunch with lena and every time they have to go wipe her mind again. i'd watch that.

What kind of future do you picture for vampire!Lena and Kara? Does Kara annoy her way into Lena’s pants fairly soon after the end of the story?
this is so random and makes me paranoid because i just reread vamp au on saturday and got to the end and was like, where the fuck is the rest OP???? and i actually have a ton written for a part 2 and have been taking a lot of little gay notes in my phone of things to add to it, so like....... are you watching me? jokes aside, i wouldn't say kara puns her way into pants super soon after the story because as you'll see lena is mad at kara for lying to her about being affiliated to vampire hunters. also, lena reunites with sam and the three of them +alex hunt lex. i'm currently planning for that next level kiss against a party pillar scene, and i'm open to any suggestions you might have! @msdanvers had given me a list of tropes she liked for pt 1 and that really informed what kind of scenes i wrote! rosa, pls feel free to give me more. i'm lost without you

What Lego sets do you collect?
hi friend! i am a big fan of the classic star wars ships, so my pride and joy is the 7,000 piece Slave 1. i also have the snowspeeder, Y-wing, TIE fighter, x-wing, and a-wing. i really want the millennium falcon, but i wanted the old one, not the new one with the new characters! the at-at is also very fucking cool, but it's too big and i don't have space for it. it's also very grey! i just love all vehicles, in general, even outside of star wars. the other collection i have is the entire harry potter hogwarts castle, the the miniature one but a collection of full-size pieced together. i had to stop adding to it after a point to boycott JKR (this was around when i was selling the fidelity books in 2020), so it's not complete but it's lit with lights and very cool. it's a shame she has to suck so much ass because the diagon alley set haunts me, i want it so bad. it's probably a gift, anyway, because as any lego lover knows, space becomes a problem quickly and you have to really ask yourself if you want to dedicate an entire room to your lego sets.

I mean, while I’m v excited for the vampire hunting I also love LOVED the silly sorority/campus aspects, including all the younger students clearly obsessed with Lena and Lena dealing with sorority politics. And Kara being a really friendly student who plays I wanna guess maybe ultimate or broomball? All the Buffy/Greek/Legally Blonde elements I enjoy SO much 😆
ULTIMATE OR BROOMBALL? the way i will try to work this into the story, on sappho. so genius and so ridiculous and very much in line with the absurd nature of this story. those parts are also my favorite, and i'm very proud of the opener of ch 2 for incorporating an element of college culture often overlooked (except in pitch perfect.) and it's funny you mention buffy because @thirdtimeunlucky, who actually helps me beta read and bounce ideas off of for this fic, compared it to buffy season 4. i was VERY offended at first until i realized that she was simply right 😔

may i request one (1) cute story or fun fact about the wife?
i will give you so many! she is a master gardener. she loves fortnite. she is blonde and very sweet, and i have a complex that people like her more than me BUT IT'S FINE -manic laughter.- she played the bassoon in high school and always comments on when there's one in a movie by smirking and muttering "naughty bassoon" to herself. i was a film major, and she has easily watched about 10,000 more TV shows and movies than me. she has recently taken an interest in the fiction genre called "splatterpunk" which i have been referring to as "splatter porn."
a cute story is that we met the 2nd day of freshmen year of college. we were briefly on the rowing team together, and it was as gay as it sounds. i've actually now known her longer than i haven't known her!

I need you to know that I think of your bicep obsessed tennis AU literally every time I watch tennis, regardless of who is in the match.
Side note: Maria Sakkari's muscles are *insane*
aren't they marvelous? she has this huge divot in her deltoid that my mind can't physically comprehend. i actually think A LOT about which players best represent kara, too! or which amalgam of players. i went to indian wells recently, and i think rybakina definitely has that innocent, sweet vibe of a kara danvers player. but she doesn't have the GUNS of sakkari!

When writing fantasy do you ever worry about how complex/interesting/unique your magic system is?
i don't write fantasy much BECAUSE i find this so daunting, and i don't think i have the right DnD dungeon master personality to endlessly ruminate and refine and rewrite the rules of a brand new world. even thinking of it is making my TMJ worse. HOWEVER, i have mad respect for authors who do this, especially authors who do this in a unique way. i really enjoyed Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett and how he wrote the magic system. as an amateur coder, i was really thrilled. it's also queer!

Kara should definitely have more obviously alien characteristics
RIGHT!!!!! to be honest, i'm working on an original novel that's just a full on supercorp knock-off and the story takes place on krypton, but i'm not giving that franchise a fucking ounce of my creative effort so i'm going to name them lana and clara and Crouton or something. but it's been so fun to research exoplanets and possible alien lifeforms and SPACE. and i'm excited about a big twist i have but it was essentially predicated on the point of, "there's no fucking WAY we encounter an ancient alien civilization and they look JUST LIKE FUCKING HUMANS."
i actually really loved the concept on the show of the image inducers because i know that film crews do this "human knock-off" bullshit for budget reasons. they don't have whole costume departments who get to be creative every day spending 8 hours getting someone into costume. but still. there are cool ways to say this individual isn't human-looking, they just look human to you. but even THERE, you don't see any worldbuilding with cultures, languages, customs. i did so much research on krypton and there is SO LITTLE, even in the comics where there was no such limitation on budget. they really sat down somewhere and were like yep Supergirl will simply be a hot human!
