still haven't written anything for my klaine hsm au, but i'm going to take a moment to talk about my hypothetical idea for it because i have nothing better to do (and idk maybe talking about will help me get in the mood to actually write). under the cut incase your not interested in reading it.
So Kurt is Ryan in this au and Blaine is Zeke. Why Zeke instead of Chad? I don't really know, Blaine just gives off Zeke vibes to me. Also the idea of Blaine trying to impress Kurt by baking for him is adorable. The general plot that I've come up with is similar to the first hsm movie with the school not liking when people don't stick to the status quo. Samcedes will take the part of Troy and Gabriella, so when they try out for the musical, Blaine figures he can talk about his passion for baking. Like in the movie though, people don't like it. Cut to that scene of Zeke trying to talk to Sharpay and instead it's Blaine asking Kurt if he would come to one of his basketball games (don't know if I should stick with basketball or change it to another sport). Kurt is definitely interested in Blaine, but he's scared of what his diva sister Rachel will think as she's already mad that samcedes might steal their spotlight (but mostly her spotlight). And that's really all I got so far. Still going back and forth between this being a fun little one shot or a fic with a couple chapters with alternating pov's from Kurt and Blaine.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 4 is shaping up to be the show’s most nostalgic season yet, and PEOPLE has the exclusive First Look at the stars in character, including Joshua Bassett (Ricky), Sofia Wylie (Gina), Julia Lester (Ashlyn), Dara Reneé (Kourtney), Frankie Rodriguez (Carlos), Joe Serafini (Seb), Liamani Segura (Emmy) and more.
Following a transformative summer away at camp, the new season follows the East High students as they enter their senior year — and it doesn’t take long before the drama picks up, both on and off stage. As the students prepare to put on a stage production of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, their plans are quickly derailed when it’s announced that Disney is making the long-awaited High School Musical 4: The Reunion movie at their high school, and they'll all be playing featured extras.
When PEOPLE visited the HSMTMTS set last year, many of the stars teased that this season feels like a “full-circle” moment as many OG High School Musical stars make cameos, including Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed and Kaycee Stroh.
“We've been manifesting it since day one and here we are four seasons later and we finally get to be with the OG Wildcat Group,” explains Lester, 23. “They embody the OG Wildcat spirit, we embody this new Wildcat spirit, and two groups blended together has been so wonderful.”
Bassett, 22, adds that it was especially moving to witness the OG HSM cast’s emotional response to returning to East High nearly 15 years after the final film wrapped. “It was really special to share that,” he says. “It was truly a beautiful thing and beyond what we were hoping for to have so many original people back.”
This season will also feature two new recurring cast members who stir things up for the East High students.
Descendants: The Rise of Red’s Kylie Cantrall plays social media star Dani, who sounds like an HSMTMTS take on Ashley Tisdale's Sharpay. “She likes the spotlight and when she wants something, she goes and gets it, even if it means stepping on people's toes a little bit,” teases Cantrall, 17.
Meanwhile, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. star Matthew Sato joins the cast as a sitcom actor named Mack, who he says “develops a really interesting relationship” with Gina as the season progresses.
Naturally, this season will feature countless nods to the original HSM franchise with the music, storylines and even costumes. “It is so meta,” showrunner Tim Federle says of season 4. “It's like Inception with jazz hands at this point. I think there are Easter eggs in every episode.”
The major storylines in this season also draw inspiration from the third High School Musical movie, as many of the characters go on journeys of self-discovery in their final year at East High.
“We chose High School Musical 3 because they're literally graduating,” Federle says of the significance behind the students’ musical for this year. “Troy and Gabriela have these stories about being potentially pulled apart by circumstance and by growing up and that's exactly what Ricky and Gina are going through,” he adds of Bassett and Sofia Wylie’s characters, who share a passionate kiss at the end of season 3.
As for that season 3 cliffhanger, Bassett teases that fans will continue to see the “aftermath” of that relationship in the upcoming season. “They're both really nervous about getting it right,” he says of Ricky and Gina. “It’s fun to see [them] in this light and actually see them in a healthy relationship because I think both of them have had pretty not great relationships.”
Relationship drama and big decisions are key themes in season 4 as the characters prepare to graduate high school. “Kourtney is going through these massive decisions about wanting it all as a college student,” teases Federle, 43. “Ashlyn goes on a journey where she discovers her own queerdom in the series.”
“Those are all things we're able to address in a way that I think celebrates the original franchise but puts a stamp on it in our own way,” Federle adds.
As for what Federle hopes the show’s final stamp will be? The importance of community. “In the streaming era, there's something real about the phrase ‘It's now or never,’” he explains. “[To] still be on the air after four seasons is a blessing alone.”
“I hope what people take away [from the series] is that in a mean, mean world, it's really important to find your people who have your back,” he adds. “The world is mean enough, and there are certain pockets of the world that you can find your people and soar and not apologize for who you are.”
He continues, “That goes for our audience, and that goes for these characters and ultimately, it goes for the real-life cast, hoping from me that they carry this with them for the rest of their lives. That they had a place to go that was safe and where they were celebrated for all of their colors.”
“This was my first TV show,” he adds. “And what I promised Disney was that if they let me hire real theater kids, they wouldn't let me down. I'm so proud of them because when the world beats them up, they still show up for me and for each other.”

Everyone is so focused on EJ being jealous of Ricky because of everything with Nini in S1 and Gina in S2 and it makes me sad that his character has been reduced to that. yes, Ricky "stealing" the girls from EJ (or however you look at it) is an important part of EJ's character build up and it plays into his insecurities but I don't think that's the biggest/only reason for the tension between them, there's a big chunk of the show's storyline for EJ that I feel like everyone is overlooking: It was EJ's senior year, the last high school musical productions he'd ever get to be in, and Ricky got the leading male parts in all three shows (also EJ didn't really get to audition for Frozen bc he has to direct it).
In season 1, he was soooo excited for HSM and he had spent a lot of time preparing to audition for Troy, his heart was set on that part and he even talked about how he thought he was the perfect Troy, and he was so confident about it. And then Ricky swoops in, not knowing anything about musicals, having never even seen the movie and having no understanding of the character, only auditioning to impress Nini, and he gets the part EJ wanted so badly. EJ has to be content with being the understudy and then he ended up reading Miss Jenn's casting paper to see why she didn't think he was good enough to play Troy and it was kinda mean tbh (and remember, after he read it he started really trying to be better) and I feel like everyone kind of put him down that season. He was so happy when he got the chance to go out as Troy on opening night but then he ended up supporting Ricky, building him up and telling him he was "the better Troy" and that he deserved the part. In season 2, it's the spring musical and the last musical of EJ's high school career! and we know from season 1 he really wants the lead part, and we find out about his dad's expectations so I think it's fair to say he also wanted to impress his dad and show him how talented he is, but at the same time, I feel like he just wants his moment in the spotlight that the others have gotten, he wants that validation that he is capable of playing the leading man and get it right and just that validation and confidence....but again, Ricky gets the lead, and EJ has to play the villain (don't get me wrong he was the perfect Gaston and I am not mad about that). In season 3, he's so excited to have all his Wildcats at camp with him, and have a great last summer; he and Gina talk about how they hope to be the leads together and it's EJ's last chance to have that spotlight leading role moment bc this is the last theater production for him to be in unless he gets onto Broadway or goes to a performing arts college. And EJ can't even properly audition for it bc he's been forced into directing it, and Ricky got the lead again, as Gina's love interest no less- and Ricky doesn't know the show well again and he casually jokes about it to EJ. And throughout all the seasons, EJ just puts on a happy face and supports everyone else and lifts them all up and helps them out; he's happy for Ashlyn when she got the lead, he's happy for Gina when she got it, he's even happy for Ricky. Even though the girls get to be upset when they don't get the parts they wanted, EJ is expected to just accept that he's not a leading man.
I mean...just think about it. EJ puts in all of this effort into being his best, he spends so much time understanding the character and rehearsing and preparing to be the best he can possibly be and Ricky, who puts in very little effort, doesn't know the character or even story/what the damn show is about, and doesn't really know that much about theater or acting just waltzes in and gets the lead three times in a row. (this also applies to the love triangles as sort of a metaphor in a way) Nini, Ashlyn and now Gina and Kourtney all get their time to shine in the lead roles they always dreamed of but didn't think they'd ever be good enough for but EJ has to suck it up and be happy for them and cope with the fact that this is his last show and he never got that big moment he wanted (despite the fact that he's basically a cookie cutter of the perfect leading man).
edited to add: yes, I do realize season 2 EJ chose not to pursue being the Beast bc he felt he was too busy with preparing for college and pls excuse my mistakes in this post/incorrect facts, it's been sooo long since I've watched the first two seasons so I went off what I thought I remembered when I was writing this post (so yeah, I'm a clown & I'll be the first to admit it but everyone who follows my blog already knows that lol). My mistake aside, my point is still the same. EJ has put in a lot of effort throughout all three seasons- with Nini, with Gina, with auditions, with all the shows, and he also went out of his way to atone for his past selfish actions (even tho he stepped back in s2 and worked on himself) and Ricky swooped in having no idea what he's doing and has effortlessly (if you're looking at it from EJ's POV- not trying to villainize Ricky cause I actually adore him) gotten everything EJ has been working hard for handed to him. In the present season it's not just that EJ is noticing the clear romantic tension between Rina, it's that Ricky is having the summer that EJ wanted to have- having fun, spending quality time with Gina and the other Wildcats, playing the leading male part alongside Gina in the show, enjoying EJ's camp friends (and becoming friends with all of them), participating fully in all the fun traditional camp activities and doing all of this with a carefree, Hakuna Matata attitude while EJ is literally about to combust from stress. It's as if Ricky has replaced him. (again, looking at this from EJ's POV). this is just a thought I had that I wanted to share bc I have seen so many posts about the love triangle and nothing about the other stuff so I apologize if I haven't articulated it in a way that makes sense but hopefully this clears some things up. I still think he should get his time to shine though bc he hasn't really gotten that in the show yet.
Also even though EJ was initially presented as being overly confident and kind of cocky, I always personally thought they've made it obvious he, like the other characters, has a lot of insecurities about himself and the cocky attitude is kind of a façade to hide that from everyone else. And considering how hard his dad is on him with all of his high expectations, I think EJ has probably spent his whole life putting in maximum effort to be the best at everything and acting confident and cocky bc it's how his dad wants him to be.

Rina and The Office: An Endgame thought experiment no one asked for 😂
I haven’t seen anyone handle the topic I’m going to cover here, but if they have, please feel free to let me know. Don’t want to reiterate things we’ve already heard.
Here we go…
So I’ve seen just about every kind of endgame prediction on here.
Most derive from two methodologies.
The first is trying to predict the likelihood of character’s future presence on the show. (EJ going to college, or even Olivia becoming too famous, etc.) By process of elimination one can guess at that elusive Rina endgame which may or may not exist.
The second being scouring season one and two for narrative evidence. Going beat by beat through Ricky and Gina’s paths to find what was meant to be or maybe what was just wishful thinking.
I think both approaches are useful, especially when applied simultaneously. It’s unlikely that endgames are being totally decided by narrative design, and not influenced by external factors like Olivia’s once in a lifetime debut, Covid, etc. It’s also bad faith to assume that Tim and the writers are just playing this by week, and not attempting to tie everything back together. So if we are interested in guessing at a Rina endgame/s we should continue to analyze using both methods. But I’m proposing a supplemental thought experiment that I haven’t seen covered yet.
I call this The Office Experiment: Jim, Pam, and the three seasons.
It’s obvious this show’s documentary visual style, comedic editing, interviews, etc. is taken in large part from the massive success of The Office. It’s not too much of a jump then to consider how this framework influences the development of core relationships over multiple seasons of HSMTS.
Now before we get lost in this, I’m not oversimplifying. I’m not so shallowly saying Jim is Ricky and Gina is Pam.
That wont work on this show. One of the remarkable things about this series was how HSM archetypes were blended into each core character. Gina was a fearsome adversary like Sharpay, and vulnerable new girl, constantly moving like Gabriella. Nini was hesitant to take the spotlight like Gabriella, but also not chained to Ricky like she was to Troy. EJ was a perfect blend of Troys jock, hot, popular guy coolness, with Ryan’s silly theatre geekiness. Ricky had Troys fears to put himself out there on stage, but he was far from “the man on campus.”
So as I dive into the Office Experiment I will draw one for ones between characters, but just know they aren’t perfectly squared. Mostly want to focus on how seasons played out with relationship arcs. This is a macro approach.
We’re headed into season 3 of HSMTS. For the sake of discussion I’m combining season 1/2 of The Office together since the first season wasn’t a full order, and didn’t tell a complete story.
Jim and Pam struggle to be together across Season 1/2. There’s moments where they are obviously close, but externally due to the obstacle of Roy, they can’t be together.
In this way we see some immediate parallels. Gina as Jim, Ricky as Pam, and Nini as the Roy obstacle covering two seasons.
At the end of season 2 of The Office, Jim puts all his cards on the table, it’s clear there was always something between them, but sadly it’s just not enough. Pam is in too deep with Roy. We can draw some ties here to Gina’s unknown and probably retconned emotional speech to Ricky in the dressing room. She feels good for having said it, and Ricky seems sympathetic, but now she has to begin the work of accepting what wont be and moving on.
Season 3 Jim is with Karen, and Pam is back and forth with Roy, but often single and dating around. Which is how we’re most likely set up to be in Season 3 of HSMTS. Jim here again is Gina, with Karen being EJ, Pam still Ricky, with Lily being Ricky’s dating around moments.
By the end of season 3 Jim and Pam are still not together. Jim is off in NYC with Karen, while Pam alone in Scranton must explain why she and Jim didn’t work out, “we could never get the timing right. I turned him down and then he turned me down.”
The bad timing for us would be Ricky was still hopelessly devoted to Nini when he and Gina begin to share the flames of romantic potential. They shared a (cheek) kiss, had inside jokes, attended parties together, gave each other hard advice, and after a private serenade Ricky told her, “I can’t forget anything about that (Homecoming) night.” But the bad timing becomes worse when Gina had to suddenly move after Thanksgiving, which sent Ricky (terrified of change) back on a path to Nini. He, in essence, turned Gina down for Nini. Now that Ricky is single, and Portwell has arrived it’s seems it’s now Gina’s turn to “turn down” Ricky. At least that’s what could happen.
At the end of season 3 of The Office, Jim swoops back in after we discover that Beach Day flashback where Jim explains to Pam that after he returned from Stamford, he “never really came back.” Pam takes a leap of faith and says “I wish you would.” Recalling this memory in his interview spurs him to unexpectedly return to Scranton, swoop in on Pam’s interview, and ask her out on their first official date. If we do get a Rina endgame, I wonder what this equivalent might be.
When you start to think of these broad relationship arcs, it does seem the most logical, and perhaps the most satisfying outcome to this show would have to be a Rina endgame, as it’s the only one with the emotional torment, and structural strength to achieve something akin to Jim and Pam, which lets be honest, is a, if not THE standard.
By the end of three seasons, mountains of tension, set backs, almost connections, dramatic speeches and external obstacles we finally got a Jim and Pam endgame.
Is The Office DNA strong enough in HSM, to secure our Rina endgame by season three’s end, or at all? Idk.
Based off last seasons abysmal, unorganized, and backtracking story lines I would say this show is more a chaotic degrassi where anything could happen. There are no grand designs. No true endgames.
But I don’t want to be that cynical. I’m excited for Portwell. I don’t think it can last, but whether or not it does, I can’t wait to see the joy and growth between those characters. I have ZERO comments about the off screen rumors. I’m excited to see a fully uncaged Nina, and poor Ricky lol. Once he discovers the harness it’s curtains for Lily, but perhaps that will help him finally recognize Gina. Lets be honest, who wouldn’t want to see even some temporary Ricky pining for Gina moments or episodes.
An additional point is that each season has a sort of predetermined balancing effect. Season 1, Ricky and Nini START broken up and END back together. The opposite being true for season 2. If Portwell, started season 2 apart and got together by its end, the opposite could likely be true for season 3. They wouldn’t likely show us Ricky and Nini “back together cause they’ve already done that.” And if Portwell ends mid season like Rini did…
… that only realistically leaves two people left to find there way back to each other. Rina is inevitable. *Thanos voice*
At the end of the day, our predictions are just that. We should investigate them throughly, but also not take it too seriously. The fun of HSM has always been not knowing how they would resolve things dramatically in the eleventh hour. HSM 2 still being my favorite, unexpected finish.
Here’s to seeing what season three resolves, or doesn’t, who ends up together or doesn’t, and if this Rina endgame has been the obvious climactic finish, or just our own meanings we made along the way.

I feel like if Disney had been as open to adapting the plot around the characters, chemistry, and fans, back in the day, HSM the movie series could have done what HSMTMTS has done now
I have mixed feelings about Rina, but I have loved them at times, and they are now canon, when in the start of the series it was clear the purpose and plan for the show was for Ricky to end up with Nini
Now I feel like Gabriella and Sharpay were both written very poorly and inconsistently as characters and used as plot devices more than anything, but as characters for their core traits, it always felt like Gabriella was too soft for Troy, to indecisive, she was the girl that seemed like a safe bet but never was, whereas Sharpay was a bit abrasive and it was supposed to put you off, but overall, underneath how harsh she seemed, there was someone who really paid attention to and understood Troy, but that wasn’t the plan in the movies, their plan was Troyella and the actors were dating in real life, so that was the story they told, but now so many people look back and see what could have been with Sharpay and Troy and it’s interesting to see the comparisons now with HSMTMTS
Because they tried to write NiNi and Gina as the new Gabriella and Sharpay, but despite their affections for the same boy, and Gina’s sabotage attempts, they learned from each other and developed a friendship and the writers allowed them to grow as characters, and in that character growth Nina does what Gabriella Kept trying to do but never achieved, she leaves Ricky and moves on and goes her own way to be who she is, while Gina finally gets the guy she wanted all along and learns that the spotlight isn’t as important as who you share it with and that lesson sticks instead of being erased overnight
Again I feel like Rina could have been written so much better than it was, it felt pretty disrespectful all around, BUT, in a way we are finally getting the authentic Troypay development that we were denied in the movie series, and our new Gabriella gets to be more of herself and find her independence and I thinks it’s the best look on all of them

What are your thoughts on when we’ll get a release date or a trailer? I was so convinced they’ll release it in July like last year but now I’m afraid that ship has sailed 😭
Hi Anon! I have a couple other anon requests I’ll get to tomorrow, but I wanted to make sure I got this one answered today BECAUSE I think we are getting info tomorrow.
Last year on the exact same day, Disney+ gave a bunch of announcements for future shows in the series (as a part of National Streaming Day). This included HSMTMTS have Corbin Bleu in s3 and the renewal of s4. Well, guess what day tomorrow is? 😁 and there is a tik toker @abbzbon who will be doing “flows” all day of different shows and what shows to watch on Disney+ if you watch Hulu and vice versa. I think we will get info there and/or on YouTube when they drop the video on show announcements. I don’t see them doing any more than a sneak peek at a scene (my guess is the principal announcing the play will be HSM4) and a release date.
If this is the case, I feel like we can expect the same timeline as last year where we get the first trailer mid-late June and the first episode late July… which I agree kind of sucks.
HOWEVER, we know this season is probably following the pattern of previous seasons (because it’s been revealed there will be a Halloween episode), so I could see them picking up right where season 3 episode 8 left off. Dara said episode 8 is important to rewatch for s4 and we have that screen cap of what looks to be Ricky unpacking on his bed (perhaps a flashback to before the kids watched the trailer?) so I think the SHOW will start mid-late summer, which would line up with when we start to watch it too.
TLDR: one scene and a release date tomorrow, trailer mid-late June, first episode release late July-first week of August
I also genuinely think we are getting a s5 but it won’t be announced tomorrow
My prediction for the first episode (if you care hahaha)
We start off right where episode 8 left. We see rina kiss again and them walking off stage and some sneaky scene where someone (even Corbin if he’s secretly still being a villain) is capturing their audio (the camera turned off, but mic’s very well could have still been on and for Corbin to blatantly say he was turning off the camera feels… sus to me)
We see a time jump of the kids returning from camp and some of the reasons they were dressed/acting the way they were at the trailer premiere (like Kourtney). We see the scene of Ricky unpacking and the photo of gina on his bed.
Then we flash forward to the first day/week back at East high where the kids find out about hsm3 -something Jenn is so proud of- just for the spotlight to kind of be taken by the principal announcing hsm4. (I feel like this will reflect her story arc in a big way. Like she’ll get another chance to be in an HSM movie and/or she is sad about the spotlight of her show getting taken so Mozzarella Stick comforts her and that’s what gets them together [I’m a Mikexjenn stan, but I won’t deny who will probably end up together]).

What do you think the next musical is going to be? Sorry if you reply this before. I believe is time to let other guys shine so I feel Seb is going to be the lead and I'm thinking Hercules maybe? To give the spotlight to every girl and maybe Gina is Meg and she signs I won't say I'm in love and it fits with whatever is happening in the season. My own wish is The little mermaid with RINA as leads but by far the same characters has never been leads twice. I wouldn't mind Descendents either
Hi - no worries I haven't answered this before.
I was under the impression that the musical they did had to have a stage/broadway version for some reason. I just googled it and Hercules does have one coming out in the 2022-2023 season, but I don't know if that is too new to adapt for the show. I think Gina singing 'I Won't Say I'm in Love' would be amazing though as it is one of my fave disney songs!
I actually get the feeling that the musical is going to be the little mermaid (like your wish lol). My reasons for this are 1. stage version exists. 2. movie coming out soon, can tie in promo for that and 3. it has been mentioned a bunch in the show plus there are heaps of characters so most can get a good part.
With Beauty and the Beast and Frozen both musicals were referred to before they were done in show in dialogue and plot points. Beauty and the Beast, obviously was the musical performed at Camp Shallow Lake with EJ and Nini East High before hsm and Frozen has been mentioned in the show a couple of times before (I am having trouble remembering when because its 7:40 am as I write this, but there definitely was a couple in s1/s2), plus it was hinted at when Dara and Frankie performed 'Into the Unknown' randomly. The Little Mermaid was kind of a big presence last season with the North High thing and how Zack Roy was in the broadway show, which is why I think they may circle back to it.
My personal dreams would be Descendants as well (I'm just obsessed with it if you don't know plus it is a core 4 which I think suits this show well), Tangled and Aladdin. I mean just imagine Ricky and Gina as Aladdin and Jasmine singing A Whole New World and tell me it isn't the stuff dreams are made of.
edit: plot twist - this morning I noticed all my hsmtmts music mixes are labelled Aladdin Original Broadway Cast... i wonder why

ok dont get me wrong i love that kourt and big red and carlos get their time in the spotlight but i dunno i wish that they had kept part of the main cast being on the crew. like it feels like those three were only switched to cast in s2 because batb has a much bigger main cast than hsm. like i love seeing kourtney talk to nini about the drama with hair and makeup crew, i love seeing big red struggle with theatre terms. obviously i loved kourt as elsa but i kinda feel like they did a disservice to make everyone cast.

Disney Plus just dropped a Pride Month Collection. Your thoughts?
I saw it and was HOPING someone would bring it up or I could slip it into a review because man oh man is this shit hilariously pathetic. Like last year's attempt at showing queer solidarity to earn some quick points:
Tumblr media
Still hilarous btw, it TRIES to show them as progressive.. while instead showing just how bad they are at doing representation.
So starting off we have the movie section
Tumblr media
It's not as hilarious as the other two, we'll get to that, as there are four full length movies in here making a gennuine effort as well as shorts.
That said two things about it stick out: the first is that there are ONLY four movies here. While I do thank Disney for not having the balls to put any of thier "first gay person" bs films in there, it does show that it took until LAST YEAR to put a gay character of note in a marvel film and that none of the others are huge relases.
As for west side story, which is indeed a film... that one's simply because Ariana Debose, who is wonderous, is nonbinary. Which is awesome, she is, but it does feel a touch pathetic to put a film in there JUST because the actor is nonbinary, especially when they didn't for any films that had other queer actors. I didn't see Cheetah Girls 1 or 2, College Road Trip, The Descendants Trilogy, Encanto, Kim Possible: So the Drama, Onward and that's just the handful I saw that I know have a queer actor in them. The list likely goes on past that. I mean if they wanted to i'd fully support it, but this feels less like putting a spotlight on ariana, like it should, and more like Disney going "oh shit we only have 8 things in this section quick pull another out of our goofy's ass!". So it's not TERRIBLE but it is pretty shocking just how little queer content disney has, as well as how a possible out, spotlighting it's queer actors, was never thought of beyond one single movie.
Now onto our main event
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's beautiful. Stupid and self serving but beautiful. So yeah for starters like movie's it' slaughably sparse. It's not as bad as there's still a decent spread of shows and outside of glee I honestly can't speak for big shot, hsm the series, future president, doogie kamahola MD, or grown ish as I haven't seen them and only know jessica jones and runaways gayness by having read stuff. And on stuff I have seen I watched all of glee as it aired...
Tumblr media
Look I was a nerdy kid who loved music. It wasn't a hard sell and only became one as it slowly degraded into a blob monster of hit's former self. I regret nothing. But they had NOTHING to do with Glee's production so while not a bad grab, it had quite a few queer characters and decent one at that including Blaine played by my boy darren criss and Santana played by the late great Naya Rievera as my faviorites out of it's queer cast, it does come off as reaching. Owl House, while something they CANCELED, is also a stellar choice. Granted I also hope this means more yelling at them for it but still. We also get louder and prouder which not only had a standout episode I planned to cover this month but got bumped up thanks to don't say gay, REMEMBER THAT GUYS?, b
But then we get reachy. We have amphibia which DOES have gay characters: oliva and yunan, the IT gals, the "I don't clownface you" guys, and our main trio despite never gettin ga proper upgrade, it just feels lik e"hey this has a few gay characters" feels a bit of a reach.
But then we get to ENTIRE reaches. We have Star Vs which while heavily impling tom, star and marco are all bi or pan, never really goes through with it and in the episode section promotes just friends.. for showing same sex couples. It congradulates the show fo rdoing the bARE MINIMUM. We also get louder and prouder which at the very least has a gay character in the main cast
Then we have the biggest joke of all: Gravity Falls. They put the series they let have the BAREST BIT of gay content at the end in, that they constantly rejected ANY AND ALL gay content from i nthere.. from a guy who DIRECTLY AND RIGHTFULYL MOCKED THEM FOR THE EVERYONE'S WELCOME UNDER THE RAINBOW TWEET. It's a level of embarassment i'd be shocked a company had reached if it was anyone but disney.
Overall it's not that the rep is bad persay, ther'es some decent one, but only ONE of these shows has a queer lead and only a few of them are on mainline networks and one of them, and Glee was added again transparently for representatoin. It probably woudl've eventually but doing it THIS MONTH just makes it obvious.
But most hilarious, most damming is that they LEFT SHOWS OUT. Yes. REALLY. With a list this small they STILL forgot some shows had queer content. So in order
Andi Mack: THe most galling omission as one of the main cast members is gay, both in character and in real life, and was Disney Channel's first gay character I believe. Hell some of his coming out arc is outright MISSING from the service because disney wants you to forget they hired a pedophile to play the dad. Yes that happened. But it's not the show's fault. They coudln't of known he was a sex monster. Just my god
Big City Greens: Admitely it's just two side characters we see together and who are confirmed a couple in the valentine's special but it's weird that's fine for Amphibia but not this show to get put on there.
DuckTales; Now like the gravity falls one this would bite them in the ass a bit as they outright blocked saying Penny was gay.. but she still is and says she is best they could. Not only that you also have weblena and Storkules. There is no straight explination for eithe rof those.
The Muppet Show: Not only was Richard Hunt gay as hell, but you also had queer guests like Elton John on there. It' sbaffling.
The Simpsons: This is a BIG one to me, especially since next week i'm doing FOUR episodes of the show for pride as part of a bigger project. Not just plugging myself there either: homer's phobia was groundbreaking for the time, there's something about marrying handles how gay marriage was and the more recent smithers episodes with him coming out and finding love help recontexualitze what was once a "GET IT HE'S Gay" joke. The show isn't the gayest, i'll grant you but the fact two major supporting cast members are gay and the shows had a decent amount of queer characters, it's weird to not feature it or at least the gay episodes. And it's not the homophobia either: Louder and Prouder's father figures is all abou homophobia as are the black-ish episodes featured. there is NO excuse.
So yeah episodes are also a mess. My point here is that while Disney is trying.. they really haven't learned anything about representation and hopefully CAN.

Disney Channel Original Movie Ranking! #38: Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure
Tumblr media
So I think this one was a direct to dvd and THEN it was labeled a DCOM. So I was wondering whether or not to include it but Wikipedia says I should so here it is!
Basically, this movie is pretty good when it comes to the main character’s growth, the overall pacing, the story beats are perfect, the songs are decent enough, and it’s inspirational. The problem? It’s just too kiddie for me to believe.
It’s like when you see the original movie and you’re so excited to watch the sequel only to find that the writers cared more about catering to children than anything else? (This is mostly with animated stuff). But it’s like a Barbie movie or an episode of my little pony, I can’t get past how kiddie it all is. Even the title is kiddie.
The only other flaw is really the side characters, they don’t get their spotlight, which I guess yeah would make sense in a Sharpay film but they needed to have a little more personality than just blindly worshipping her, especially the love interest. That and the cringey “love story” between the two dogs.
Basically this movie is cute, don’t get me wrong, but it’s target demographic is clearly little girls, unlike the HSM series where it felt like it catered to kids in general, and slightly older. So I don’t know if I’ll watch this movie again. If you love it that’s great! I just don’t know if I can get past the kiddie stuff. But sharpay as a character is great! And if you love this character you will love the movie for sure!

Entertainment Spotlight: Joshua Bassett, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series
Joshua Basset is an 18 year-old actor and songwriter from Oceanside, California. He had a recurring role on Disney Channel's Stuck in the Middle, recently guest starred on Dirty John and recently starred in a recurring role on ABC's Grey's Anatomy. In High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Bassett plays Ricky, a sarcastic yet charismatic skate rat and high school junior, who launches a bold plan to prove himself to his ex-girlfriend Nini — by auditioning to star opposite her in the school's first-ever production of High School Musical. Joshua took the time to answer some of our questions:
Describe the role of Ricky in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
Ricky is best described as a sarcastic sweetheart. He’s a skater, who plays guitar as a “side-thing.” Due to his parents’ rocky marriage, he has a difficult time with emotional intimacy, leading to a complicated love life. He “plays it cool” but really is a softy at heart.
What is your favorite line of Ricky’s (without any spoilers)?
It’s tough picking a favorite. I actually was able to improvise a chunk of dialogue in the season finale that made it in the final cut. It’s filled with spoilers, so you’ll have to take my word on it for now ;)
If you could spend one episode playing another character, which character would you want to play?
I would kill to be any character because they’re all so dynamic, but I’d actually rather BE Frankie Rodriguez (who plays Carlos). He’s the funniest person I’ve ever met. I envy his wit.
What’s your favorite song from the original HSM films?
“You Are the Music in Me” from “High School Musical 2” or “Breaking Free” from “High School Musical.” Both staples in my childhood.
How does it feel to be part of an iconic franchise like High School Musical?
I’m honored! How neat that the same people behind the iconic franchise I grew up with, put their faith in me for this series. It’s exciting, too, that it is its own thing – a kind of tribute to the first three, while also independently wonderful.
Thanks, Joshua! Catch High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+, and stay tuned for the rest of the HSMTMTS Spotlights, going live all week right here!

the new disney stars have it so much easier than the old disney stars
#I’m just thinking about how easy zendaya and dove and china all have it so much easier than demi selena miley#or the hsm cast for that matter#its a couple things honestly#like from what I see Disney is less strict with their stars now so they’re more outspoken on their social medias#and so we get to see that they’re not this cookie cutter facade that they put up for disney#and a lot of the older stars stuck to roles strictly within Disney so no one really got to see them in other roles#and because of that when the older stars left Disney they had these major transformations that just got them huge backlash#like when Vanessa and Selena did spring breakers or when Miley had that phase y’allknow what I’m talking about#but zendaya dove china sofia and everyone else did other roles WHILE on Disney so they were accessible to more than just kid audiences#and its also the matter that the older stars current audience is STILL their audience from when they were on Disney ten years ago#their audience grew up with them so its harder for them to shed off that image#but with the new stars the grown up audience isn’t the one that they’ve grown up with#and lastly I would say that it has to do with the fact that they’re not as ashamed ??? to be on disney#again with the older stars they’ve avoided their Disney roots and now all of them are starting to embrace it again#because they’ve realized that their target audience doesn’t like it when they denounce Disney#but the newer ones seem to be prouder of the fact that they’re on disney#and I know I said lastly but one other thing would be that the stars from 2000-2010 were MUCH more in the spotlight than the ones now#just because less kids in general are watching disney#DISNEY DISCOURSE#btw I recently found out that back in the HSM days Disney marketed their audience to a lot of teenagers#so this is also why the older actors were in the spotlight more
