Alrighty so the final episode!

PLEASE say Maddox and Jet will be back next season. I need them to be. These siblings made the season tbh.

I could not care less about Rina or Portwell. I like all characters individually. I feel bad for EJ and I hope he gets to confront his dad. I am proud of how far Ricky has come. And I am happy Gina is starting to figure out what she wants. But I don’t care who dates who.

Nini’s departure! Also the fact that she leaves opening night cards!!! I really hope she actually does do that in S4 too even if she’s not around

Why are they all so shocked over the trailer? They knew they were just acting bitchy and that they would make it more dramatic than it was.

So now we’re here with… my sweet and wonderful Ashlyn. The character that I think the fandom, to be honest, has been a little harsh on this season. Y’all started calling her annoying, ”out of character”, ”she’s gonna cheat on Red with Maddox/Val 🙄”. No?? What happened to you all being so happy and supportive for Ashlyn in S2 only to immediately bash on her?

I like Redlyn just fine. They’re very cute. ”I’m Ashlyn’s boyfriend and I’m bi” was the funniest thing I have ever heard, though I am slightly unsure why Red was even in the documentary lmao (and I don’t know if he was supposed to say something else and he said wrong/they cut what he actually said lol, but nonetheless it was very funny). I am completely fine with them being endgame - but I hope you all don’t forget that Ashlyn did have a self discovery this season.

Yes, Redlyn are cute, Redlyn are bicons, yes I agree. But what bothers me a little bit is the fact that many people have basically barely mentioned Ashlyn when talking about this season, except when they talk about Redlyn in the last episode. Where were you to say anything in ep6 with the firework hug? Where were you in ep7? 90% of what you seemed to talk about was Rina or Portwell. It leaves me a little itch when people just apparently don’t have anything to say except when she reunites with her boyfriend, and that’s when they even mention her. Even if I find Redlyn cute, this wasn’t a Redlyn season, it was an Ashlyn self discovery season.

Yes, you can talk about what you want. Maybe I am a hypocrite since I barely talk about Rina or Portwell. But this is actual WLW representation and it’s a little sad with specifically WLW representation, cause people are always so much more celebratory with MLM representation - like with Carlos and Seb, people immediately are like ”😍🥳🕺🏼❤️” but when it comes to WLW representation, it almost always feels like people are more like ”🤷🏼‍♀️”. This is why so many WLW shows gets cancelled, cause there’s not as much viewers, cause with queer rep people rather prefer two boys rather than two girls.

I often recommend the show ”Tudo Igual SQN” (All the same or not) on D+ for people who has watched HSMTMTS, especially people who likes Ashlyn and Maddox. There’s two characters named Pri and Trix who are very similar to them. But I feel like, if all of the HSMTMTS fandom would watch that show they would probably focus on the ”str8” ships a lot more than Pri and Trix. Probably focus a lot more on Trix and her boyfriend.

Did I want Ashlyn and Val to be together? No, Val is a lot older and in a whole other place in life. Did I want Ashlyn and Maddox to be together? I’ll… get back on that.

Maddox is another character people just don’t mention in this season, and often when they do it was either to go ”she’s annoying 🙄” or comment on her just saying something. Not a lot of people seem to comment on her storyline or the fact that she has a crush on Ashlyn.

What I want for Maddox is that she comes back in season 4 and talks to Ash. We see the documentary trailer and it seems like they will make it seem like Maddox is in love with her - which probably will cause some drama. I bet there’s gonna be drama for all of them over it.

Ashlyn seemed like she had some doubts with Red in the last ep, but she didn’t want to make him feel bad. We’ll see how it goes with that. The documentary will stear up some drama. If Redlyn stays together and is endgame, I’ll be happy for them. If they break up and Ashlyn ends up with Maddox I’ll also be happy (though, I also hope they can do it justice - I do want everyone to be happy). And if Ashlyn, Red and Maddox all end up single I’ll also be happy for them.

I also think Kourtney deserves her own little part here, because y’all were sleeping on her too this season. She plays ELSA and needs to be treated like the queen she is! Her anxiety storyline was so good. Her scenes were the only times in the entire series when I cried. When she climbed the wall. When Channing turned off the lights and she stood on stage, TEARS came for me when she started singing again and everyone cheered for her. I am so proud of Kourtney. She is so good. The only one who has gotten me to cry TWO TIMES in a show I barely felt a bit sad with last season.

Conclusion: For me, and me personally so this ofc does not apply to all of you, the characters who made the season the most for me was Ashlyn, Kourtney and Maddox. Everyone else was fine, but those three ladies really made it for me ❤️💜💙

Omg okay so I’ve only watched up to ep6 of the new season of HSMTMTS and I have thoughts.

I really don’t like that they’re bringing Rina back. Like last season the arc between EJ and Gina was the best thing that ever happened to the show, and if Gina gets with Ricky after EJ goes to college as if nothing ever happens I’ll be PISSED

and the second best thing that happened? Ashlynn and Big Red. They were just so sweet. Big red ESPECIALLY doesn’t deserve to get essentially cheated on or whatever ashlynn is fixing to do with whatever the other girl’s name is.

like is it a representation thing? Do they need more girls who like girls? Unless there was an ENTIRE arc about how big red stopped being a good bf (like EJ’s arc in s1) then I would understand. But he doesn’t deserve any of this.

Apparently filming for s3 of hsmtmts ends in early April and it seems they already finished filming ep6 so mid-season finale is already finished. My predictions are: we’ll get our first look into the season by late March or early April, after that they'll probably announce the premiere date. Trailer for S3 will drop on mid May so the season premieres in June so it will have a late August or early September finale. This gives them the whole summer for the season. By late May/early June we'll probably have the poster for the season, a photo shoot and the cover for the soundtrack or at least know the song titles, they’ll probably release a song earlier to push promotions (most likely the one featured in the trailer). If I have to guess, according to IMDB the first episode is called "All For One" that’s the group song from HSM2 and it feels like the perfect one to promote. A week or so before the premiere interviews with the cast or Tim, plus reviewers might come in.

I’m actually super excited to see sneak peeks of the characters and how the set will look like. I have hopes for this one. Hope won’t get disappointed.

Yeah the summer season airing in the summer just feels right. Still keeping expectations low but I'm hopeful

You didn’t specify a topic so i’m actually gonna take HSMTMTS for this one.

I could not care less about Rina or Portwell. I like all three characters individually and I don’t care who they end up with. I feel like a large majority focuses all too much on these three when there’s so much else going on??

Maddox and Jet??! Hello??! The sibling drama they have here… also with Maddox and Madison? I wanna know more!

Kourtney is playing ELSA and she does not get that amount of screentime or talk from the fandom about it. She has also has some anxiety that I feel like not enough people are talking about (myself included, sadly - but I have thought about it)

And Ashlyn. My sweet Ashlyn. For the majority of the season this far, it seems like the fandom has called her annoying, out of character, ”not a help for the others”. And the girl is going through an identity crisis. Yes, at first it was handled a little so-so, but after ep6 I really feel like they’re going in a good direction with it. I am sorry, but I can’t believe people are focusing on Portwell and Rina and they’re NOT discussing the hug.

It’s not often Disney gives us WLW representation. And when they do it’s so much more vague than with their MLM representation. I mean just take Carlos and Seb, who both were obvious gays from the start. While Ashlyn, they had more of a vague approach.

To make other examples, I will take the D+ shows from LA. For example, Siempre Fui Yo (”It was always me” on D+) has two boys who eventually fall in love and gets to have a pretty passionate kiss scene. Another D+LA show called Tudo Igual SQN (”All the same… or not” on D+) has two girls who the first is an out lesbian and the other is (coincidentally) a red haired girl who thinks she has the perfect life and it all figured out, and then she meets this other girl and suddenly she starts to question a LOT about herself. These two girls don’t get a kiss scene (other than a brief one where one is gonna kiss the other on the cheek to say goodbye, and accidentally kissed her lips, they stare at each other for a moment before she walks away) - most of what they get is stares and a little discussion in the last ep about the red haired girl having to figure stuff out. I know it’s all setup for season 2, but it’s different to Siempre Fui Yo, where they let them have a full kiss scene already in S1. It just shows the difference of their approach of MLM characters and WLW characters.

Also, like… the treatment of WLW characters in general? People have talked about how they want Ricky to be confirmed bi and ship with with Jet - and that is very valid, of course! But then when it comes to Maddox and now Ashlyn, who now canonly are WLW, people often find them annoying and/or never ever mention them at all (it’s a little like how people treat Robin in stranger things). I’ve discussed Maddox before in a previous post and yes, she overstepped, but I really do understand why she acts like she does.

I’ve often been pretty tempted of asking Portwell/Rina shippers what they think of the other plots in the show, especially what they think of Ashlyn’s storyline. However, I never have, because I do feel like a hypocrite - I mean, sure, they never mention her or her storyline, but I never mention Portwell or Rina, so it’s like… yeah.

Anyway we’re getting some representation here (I personally can relate on a PERSONAL level getting hugged by a girl at a camp and my world turning upside down, I am serious) and I don’t know how they are going to handle it, maybe they’ll surprise me or they will disappoint me. But nonetheless, we are getting it and I personally find that more interesting than whoever Gina is gonna end up with.

let’s talk about ricky bowen again

dude ep5 and ep6 has crushed me. the way that they are alluding to ricky’s mental health these two episodes is so incredibly loud in the most subtle ways. and not to mention so damn relatable.

ricky bowen is crying for help and comfort rn and it’s so sad and incredibly heartbreaking to watch.

episode 5 mostly set up the emotion derivative and complexity for all of ricky’s actions in episode 6 to be as angsty and as wonderful as they were so i’m just gonna be pretty straight to the point with this first half of the post. let’s take a closer look and start with episode 5:

watching this sucked. he’s growing up, and bottling up all of these feelings to be strong for his dad. i love that they establish ricky’s response to conflict and trials: as someone who wants to be there for everyone else, even though it’s pretty sad to watch. he passively states what’s going in his life but never really talks about it, throughout the next few scenes, we realise that he deals with his conflict by being there for everyone else and well... not dealing with his conflict. he literally grows up and as fucked up as it is, becomes the parent. it made my stomach twist and it was written really well. my poor baby boi.

in his next two scenes with gina, we see exactly what was established with his dad:

in the first gif, he states his conflict in passing and then flips it to gina to talk about what’s going on with her. i’ve said again and again that he’s rlly bad with explicit verbal communication and this is a great example of how he’s good at being a support system for literally everyone, but has such a hard time being kind to himself. he uses ‘it’s a whole thing’ as a fast and sure way to dismiss his issue as not worth talking about and instantly wants to make gina the focus. the writers really did well with establishing that.

this gina and ricky interaction was great. not only did it establish rina’s chemistry, it also gave us the setup to ricky’s actions in the next episode - this play is what’s keeping him afloat rn. the people, the lines, the rehearsals are effectively helping him stay grounded and not lose his mind. it’s rlly heartbreaking to see how much he’s actually hurting, especially because he explicitly doesn’t show it throughout this episode or the next.

(i plan to do a rina arc post as well, and i’ll save most of my thoughts on them for that, but while we’re here, the last two scenes we broke down really established this strong and substantial connection between the characters really well. the writers pushed past the ‘we’re both outsiders’ arc and really gave ricky and gina substance and common ground for a solid dynamic. their motives and actions are very similar, and that’s why they have such a good foundation for gina’s understanding of, and being there for ricky in ep6, as well as where-ever the writers decide to take them - i personally prefer friendship but i know that some of y’all are rina shippers and that’s also very much on the table and i’m rlly okay with either! as much as i want rini to be endgame, they have established such wonderful characters with such amazing arcs and i want all of them to be explored and the writers are doing good work with it rn).

and now let’s look at episode 6, where they drive that stake into our hearts further. this is ricky’s reaction to carlos breaking the ms. jenn news to everyone:

you can see him unwind. you can see his world fall apart bit by bit as the realisation hits. the established safe haven he has, doubling down as a distraction for everything going on in his life right now, is being torn from under his feet. it was personally one of the hardest and heartbreaking things to see this ep, it’s just constant angst with him oof.

but then, in the most ricky bowen fashion ever, he jumps right back to wanting to fight and keep trying, he stays despite everyone else leaving (starting with nini, and i’lll mention why that’s important in just a second). he puts aside all the anxiety he has if the play (at that point, most probably bound to end) falls apart and commits to fighting for it, clinging desperately to it:

and now as for everyone leaving, the writers used it as such a good way to establish how significantly important the play is for especially ricky, carlos and gina - the three people who stayed. as a side-note, carlos’s attachment to the play is established and developed later in the episode with the string of dialogue in big red’s basement, so i’m not gonna elaborate, it was way more explicit than ricky’s arc that led to the climatic monologue(ish) he delivered towards the end of that same scene.

for nini, the play is the path to her developing her self-confidence and maturity so she embraces it to grow (and she’s slowly rediscovering herself just generally), not to run away from the rest of her life, unlike ricky and gina:

like nini, the rest of the cast uses the play as an opportunity rather than a distraction, and that’s what sets ricky and gina apart from them. this made it easier from them to walk away and wallow in the possibility of the show ending (also that look ricky gave nini walking way *my heart shattered*). ricky (and gina) is established to clearly not have that same luxury. this scene sets up ricky and gina having the play as this tether that’s keeping them at bay from things that they should be dealing with (we don’t know about gina’s issues yet and i’m very ready and excited to cry about that angst by the way), so their instinct is to stay and try and fight for the play/keep practising.

the next scene explicates why this play means the most to ricky, and as with everything about his arc rn, it’s heart-wrenching:

he’s in complete denial of the only thing keeping him together rn falling apart. it is sad, heart-breaking and gut-wrenching. this angst is delivered with such fucking excellence by joshua bassett that i kinda wanna punch him lmao

and here’s where it hits home. gina realises the reality that they might not come back to the show and is ready to face it (instituted by her even asking the question in the first place), but ricky’s denial contrast that so heavily this scene. that denial is what establishes the play meaning the most to ricky. just by watching the scene, you can tell how he’s unravelling, trying not to let himself be overwhelmed by the possibility of it. it’s so fucking angsty ugh.

(another side note, as i said before, i’m probably gonna make another entire post about the gina/ricky arc but i had to mention this. after this exchange, her supporting him and taking his mind off of all of this by asking him to do something he loves and perform the acoustic version of ‘when there was me and you’, grounding ricky for a bit, was one of my most favourite things to watch this entire episode, even being primarily a rini shipper - they rlly sold them i can see their growing popularity as completely justified, they were hella cute this ep).

now this moment is where i felt like sobbing and reaching into the screen to hug him:

he finally opens up about it. why he’s so desperate to keep this play alive and why saving ms. jenn’s job is so incredibly important to him. and i loved that nini helped him say the words he needed to say. the look of relief when he was assured that he didn’t have to do any of this alone, just with nini finishing that sentence for him - that nini, gina, big red and everyone else was going to be there for him, and hear him out - fuck, it was beautiful!! it also encouraged him to take charge and chant ‘what team?’, he was ready to fight and everyone readying with him was so magnetic to see. it was also clearly therapeutic to him bc during, and after the final number, he looks genuinely happy, and we see him fully smiling/laughing more than the last 5eps combined.

he finally gets a win and it may not solve all his problems, but being one of the motivating factors in saving ms. jenn’s job through his vulnerability in this scene really gives him a leg up and i loved watching it. i hope they don’t dismiss everything he still has to continue to have to deal with (making this an all problem solving cure as sometimes disney does) but that aside, i’m so glad they had subtle continuity in furthering his character’s development these last two episodes even though he wasn’t a primary focus. it was subtle, nuanced and genuinely so complex and enjoyable to watch.
