Concept doodles I did specifically for redesign of The Nine Realms Night Lights but could actually work for Light Furies too (I mean colors)

They are very late, but Bubblehorn's existence was reminded to me and I found that I could try to do a redesign for it, but I got distracted and ended up with Night Lights lol

Kinda inspired by @/sparrowlucero's idea of Night Furies colors working like those of wolves so they aren't all black.

These Night Lights are just ideas and there probably would be possible different versions of each patterns but idk. Just ideas

And Thunder's design diss lmao

Now I think his tail fins should be bigger but I'm too lazy to come back to it now so let's agree it's bigger. Mostly longer.

For all we know Toothless was the last Night Fury, so it's theoretically impossible that after so many years his descendants would continue to have black coloration, especially that much of it (unless they are heavily inbreed what after looking at those models is possible-)

To distinguish our main dragon (because apparently the saddle is not enough???) from other representatives of the specie as well as dragons from the background, I thought it would be an interesting option to give the Light Furies (whose genes should now predominate, if not completely supplant those of the Night Fury) and Night Lights a naturally varied color scheme.

Since the popular interpretation is that Light Furies are a semi-aquatic variety of Furies I thought aquatic animals would be the best inspiration. There I have only dolphins but probably some other could be used too (like sharks??)

Thunder is, of course, inspired by the Killer Whale. Mainly because I didn't want to change his design very much.

Notes:

All tail fins are shaped more like those of Light Fury but are ragged like those of Night Fury. I didn't write it on the doodle but wings are more like NF (they are kinda bat-like and dragons were living uderground.)

The wings have a much larger connection to his flank, giving a surface area that gives him the actual ability to fly

The legs are somewhere between NL and LF. Bulkier than LF, slimmier than NF

I kept his big ears. They are funky

Plus I made his body longer and neck thicker

Reupload from earlier this year, yet again

I redesigned Subzero (my Light Fury OC/replacement) for like the third time this year because design consistency is a myth for me

since she IS an Arctic Fury in my AU I designed how I felt would be more suited for an Arctic habitat such as:

shortening her ears and nubs so she'd lose less body heat

got rid of her detailed scale texture to make her more smooth and blubbery like a beluga whale, resembling the canon Light Fury's skin texture more (plus it'll make it easier for me to draw her)

changed the shape of the elbow fins

changed the tail to be more fish-like

Other fun facts/headcanons about my Arctic Fury/Ice Fury species for my HTTYD3 AU under the cut if you're interested:

instead of fire, Arctic Furies have ice breaths like the Bewilderbeast. They breathe out cold mist that instantly freezes anything on contact

they can still cloak like the canon Light Fury does, with a similar mechanism where they coat themselves in an icy sheen that makes their scales clear and reflective as glass for several seconds. It doesn’t JUST work for camoflauge but is also an effective mechanism in hunting and battle. Turning themselves reflective makes their opponents/prey stop in their tracks and confuses them with distorted reflections of themselves, giving the Ice Furies the opportunity to catch them off guard. Turning invisible also allows them to fire blasts from long range distances without getting caught

though they aren’t semi-aquatic like their cousins the Tide Fury, Ice Furies can hold their breath for a long time and are often better swimmers than regular Night Furies. They often dive and glide underwater to catch fish like some bird species do. They’re also known for ambushing prey by stalking them under the ice and then breaking through to catch them, not unlike leopard seals

Arctic Furies function like penguins, where the females go hunting to find food for the babies and the males guard the eggs until they hatch. Yes this even happens with Toothless and Subzero when they mate

Some canon divergence/redesigned Night Lights

Before DreamWorks announced the Night Lights species name, given names and genders, I called them Blight Furys(didn't know blight was a fungus at the time) and gave Dart the name Twilight and made her male, Ruffrunner was given the name Midnight and made him male and Pouncer was given the name Eclipse and made him female.

So anyway I haven't seen HTTYD The Nine Realms but what the heck as long as I've drawn just about every dragon in Toothless' family I decided to redesign Thunder for my AU too

I've said before that The Hidden World isn't canon in my AU so the Night Furies are NOT extinct but I still thought ti'd be fun to grab some inspiration for Thunder redesigns I've seen where he's 90% Light Fury (or Arctic Fury, in my AU) and portray him with bi-colored blue and green eyes (so if this looks basically identical to anyone else's Thunder redesign I'm sorry I promise I'm not stealing from you rip)
