Handsome Siblings (2020) HC’s
I am fully aware that I am late to the party, but I have lots of thoughts on how Xiaoyu’er’s and Wuque’s brothership would develop post-finale so here we are.
Bickering
With Wuque's upbringing in the refined Yihua palace, it is to be expected that he would be far more academically knowledgeable than Xiaoyu'er. Specially considering that the drama does throw in the occasional joke of Xiaoyu'er misquoting this or that proverb. I just think it would be kinda funny if at some point both are having a verbal spat over something ultimately trivial and Wuque, realising he probably won't be able to outwit Xiaoyu'er, simply switches to cultured speech to mess with him.
Go matches
The first time Xiaoyu'er loses to Wuque in a Go match, he is incredibly dramatic about it. He eventually accepts it, but not before putting on a Shakespearean drama performance.
Reputation
By the end of the drama, although he has made amends with both Murong Jiu and Zhang Jing, the rest of the world still knows Xiaoyu as the Most Evil Person Alive, so seeing him travel alongside the illustrous gentleman Hua Wuque must be quite a sight... at some point some unfortunate soul is bound to make a comment on Xiaoyu'er's villainy while they are traveling together. At which point Xiaoyu plays it off likes its nothing with his wits, but Wuque gives the clueless offender the Wide-Eyed Look Of Reprimanding Outrage™. Xiaoyu'er is a smug little gremlin about it.
Friendships
Xiaoyu'er would definitely pick up on Wuque's loneliness eventually, and push him to make more friends at any chance he gets: shared meals with fellow travelers, festivals.
The woes of high literature
Imagine at some point they are solving a mystery. As it is expected, Xiaoyu'er is mostly in the lead, as being the clever one is kind of his thing. So when finally everything is starting to click together there is only one clue that has yet to fit... and for whatever reason it is a piece of hyper complicately written literature. So in the middle of his Eureka moment, Xiaoyu'er has to turn to Wuque for help because "I can't read pretentious".
Attempted tutoring
Following the previous incident, Wuque attempts to tutor Xiaoyu'er. Thanks to the latters shenanigans, they end up doing anything but actually studying. At least they had fun...

One of the funny things that keeps distracting me while watching Love Between Fairy and Devil is that they use a lot of the soundtrack from Handsome Siblings. I love that show so much and now I need to rewatch my beloved Hua Wuque!
(seriously why isn't handsome siblings more popular???)

The plot of 绝代双骄 (#The Handsome Siblings 2020, Netflix) in general
It’s even better when the extrovert turns out to be the introvert’s long-lost twin.

Finished watching Handsome Siblings and got a new crossover idea:
Jiang Xiaoyu (and Wuque) as the founder of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan.
This would explain A LOT about the Jiang motto 😂

9 Fandom Peeps To Get To Know Better:
Thank you Gab @randomingoftherandomness for tagging me 💕
3 Ships You Like: After finding out that She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat has a season 2, I'm back on the Nomoto and Kasuga brainrot. I'm also watching White Cat Legend, which all the ships in there are 🤌🤌🤌
First Ship Ever: I'm pretty certain it's Xiao Yu'er and Hua Wuque, specifically the 2005 version, I don't even think I understood what shipping was, I saw them on TV as a kid and thought huh I think they are neat (و •̀ ᴗ•́ ) و It certainly unlocked something in me, no idea what but it unlocked it 🤔 I think that explains why I was on board with the Gong Shangjue and Gong Yuanzhi situation...the signs were there all along
Last Song You Heard: Akini Jing - Call Me Shadow
Favourite Childhood Book: Rainbow Magic series!!!! I used to go to the library weekly to borrow a different one to read 💖💖
Currently Reading: 一颗苹果 by 孟还 (An Apple by Meng Huan) A story about two brothers who reincarnates and things happen between them... I swear to the danmei gods, brothers is not my go to category, although based on my answer in Q2, this is not very convincing statement. I'm about 3rd way through, it's not as exciting as I thought, also not spicy. (Just checked, no English translations of it yet, but it is on goodreads lol)
Currently Watching: She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat, White Cat Legend, Spirealm
Currently Consuming: Bagel 🥯🥯
Currently Craving: Sleep, girl always crave sleep 😌

C-Drama Review: Handsome Siblings
Broadcast: iQIYI, 2020, 44 Episodes Genre: Comedy, Wuxia
Tumblr media
My Rating 5/10
A chaotic show full of just as chaotic but loveable characters, getting caught up in a predictable story, that you can't stop yourself from caring for deeply!
Acting: 5/10 World-building: 5/10 Production: 6/10 Storytelling: 5/10 Pacing: 5/10 Re-watch Value: 4/10  Bonus: for having interesting dynamics between the many characters, that doesn't just center on romance!
Summary with minor spoilers:
"Handsome Siblings" is the story of twin brothers Jian Xiaoyu (played by Chen Zheyuan) and Hua Wuque (played by Hu Yitian), who are separated at birth, after the tragic death of their parents. One raised by a prestige martial art sect, the other among villains, both strive to become the best martial artist of their generation. Their true identities and relationship unbeknownst to them, they are still drawn to each other, even through they come from enemies sides. This path leads them to become both enemies and friends - reluctant, setting out to take revenge on the other. On their adventures through the martial arts word, they make new friends and enemies - and it's never quite clear who is who.
My review (Spoiler warning!)
A show mediocre in every way - which includes the best way as well! If I'm being honest, if I had been paying full attention to this show in the beginning, I might have dropped it. Instead, I started to care deeply for the main characters halfway through.
The acting is decent enough for a comedic drama, emotional scenes are done well and draw in the audiences. The production is good as well, the set design is beautiful and the costumes mostly interesting! They do, however, include some of the most ridiculous hair-dues, and it took me a minute to look past them.
The show is a character-driven drama, meaning the story-line is predictable and full of unnecessary loops, that mess up the pacing. Once you actually care for the male and many female lead characters, it becomes quite enjoyable.
I also liked the slow pacing of the two main love stories, which had time to develop probably and each had an interesting dynamic between the couples. I also appreciated, that this was not a romance at its center, but a story about family and the question of how to distinguish between friend and enemy.

Hua Wuque protecting Jiang Xiaoyu
I wonder why Jiang Xiaoyu never thought he’s related to Hua Wuque. All of their enemies describe Hua Wuque having a strong resemblance with his father.

@candorkingdom Ikriiiight. I want to see that so bad tooo. Like they were already so protective of each other when they knew that they had to kill each other, imagine when they actually know that they're brothers, they would go all out for each other.
I wanted to see them bonding, like bickering over who's the older one even though they're twins, for some reason I can really see them doing this lol; Xiaoyu would definitely argue that he's the older or the younger depending on what's more convenient for him in the situation and Wuque would be like "We're twins, there's no older or younger" and then they would go on and on. I wanted to see them fighting over food, though I think it would be more like Xiaoyu openly stealing food from Wuque and Hua Wuque wouldn't even blink in protest and maybe next time he would directly put the things that Xiaoyu likes in his plate. I wanted to see Xiaoyu using "Hua Wuque is my brother" to scare people off and Hua Wuque using Jiang Xiaoyu's tricks to get out of situations(though we do see a teeny glimpse of it with the ten villains but I wanted to see so much more of it). I wanted them to celebrate their birthday together, actually knowing that it's both their birthday and having the biggest smiles ever.
We deserve a season 2 just to see them bonding. I would deffo watch it.

Him: standing at a whooping height of 193 cm; is in the Top 10 Strongest Martial Artists in the show; is also the youngest of that list; can fight a dozen men without breaking a sweat
Me: he’s baby 🥹
Srly Hua Wuque is baby boi who’s emotionally vulnerable and needs to be wrapped in a blanket and fed hot chocolate

The few episodes when Jiang Xiaoyu was depressed was... guh, so good. My favorite character is Jiang Xiaoyu and I love my angst and hurt/comfort and him being all self-sacrificing and Hua Wuque being all protective. We need more of that damn it! Anyone have any fanfic recs that fit any of those criteria?

Look, see, the fact is that twin brothers separated at birth right after their parents were brutally murdered by a pair of jealous sisters, and then raised separately by the (very rich) jealous sisters and by a crew of (not rich) oddballs known as the Ten Great Villains, neither one never knowing that the other exists, and then both unleashed (coincidentally simultaneously) on the world after being given the mission to seek out and kill the other, meanwhile wreaking the maximum amount of chaos that it is possible for an 18-year-old to wreak, will never NOT be a good plot hook.

Honestly one of my favorite parts of The Handsome Siblings was how whenever Hua Wuque started sadly playing his flute someone would inevitably walk up to him afterwards to ask him what was wrong.
