scream i landed on your blog and was immediately delighted to see someone who has as much of a soft spot for fairfax as i do!! i adore your portrait series of him!! i went to the national civil war centre and saw his wheelchair/the sword and gauntlet he wore at marston moor in person and that was enough to make me tear up fjfkfk

HELLO MY FRIEND <3 <3 <3 these asks have been living in my mind since you sent them (a very long time ago, i am so sorry!!!) i am so glad you like my drawings of him, thank you so much for your very kind words :,-D also Same Hat with regard to his wheelchair/sword/gauntlet!!! seeing them in person almost killed me for real. i remember walking in and seeing the wheelchair Right There, Literally The First Exhibit, and causing such a scene by grabbing my mum's arm and making garbled noises that the very nice person at the desk started laughing (in a nice way) and offered to take a picture of me with it. also his GIANT GAUNTLET.........puts my hand in it. now we are holding hands :-) i also very much liked the description of him on the information sheet as a Huge Dark-Haired Man. i love a #hugeguy. mr big

ANYWAY to answer your second question: i agree that it seems very likely he did use a cane at some point, if only because i doubt he would have spent such a vast amount of money on a wheelchair if he had not exhausted alternative options for mobility aids first. i have never heard of a cane being linked with him, but i agree it seems far less likely that something like a cane would have been preserved than his massive extremely cool and awesome newfangled wheelchair (i love his wheelchair So Much. if he wasnt already the swankiest guy in yorkshire he definitely was when he was zipping around in that thing). it's also possible of course that he never used a cane, but it seems unlikely to me that he wouldn't have used some sort of mobility device/devices before commissioning his wheelchair, whether a cane or crutches or something else. assuming he did use one, he might have discarded it once he started using the wheelchair full time, or else it just wasn't preserved along with his other personal items after he died. i would be over the moon if something was discovered though!!! that would be very exciting indeed. in the meantime he can borrow my cane :-)
