How to give Duke Humphrey a bath
John Russell's The Book of Nurture is the gift that keeps giving. First it was the care and feeding of Duke Humphrey, then it was the medieval toilet poetry. Now, let me give you: how to give your duke a bath and put him to bed.
If your lord wishes to bathe and wash his body clean, hang sheets round the roof, every one full of flowers and sweet green herbs, and have five or six sponges to sit or lean upon, and see that you have one big sponge to sit upon, and a sheet over so that he may bathe there for a while, and have a sponge also for under his feet, if there be any to spare, and always be careful that the door is shut. Have a basin full of hot fresh herbs and wash his body with a soft sponge, rinse him with fair warm rose-water, and throw it over him; then let him go to bed; but see that the bed be sweet and nice; and first put on his socks and slippers that he may go near the fire and stand on his foot-sheet, wipe him dry with a clean cloth, and take him to bed to cure his troubles

Table Mountain (N) via Tyee Lakes, 2022 Sierra Challenge Day 8
Tumblr media
There are two Table Mountains within in the Sierra Nevada. The southern Table Mountain lies on the Great Western Divide and is a very difficult peak to day hike. The northern Table Mountain lies between South Lake and Lake Sabrina east of the Sierra Crest and relatively speaking is a very easy peak to day hike. Day 8 of the 2022 Sierra Challenge was designed to be an active rest day, sandwiched between the two toughest days of the The Citadel and Mt Torchbearer. Therefore, the northern Table Mountain seemed like a good fit. Bob surprisingly encouraged this selection, as there had never been a Sierra Challenge outing starting from Tyee Lakes Trailhead.
I woke up in my motel room somehow motivated to keep in the running for the Yellow Jersey. I drove through the darkness and arrived at the Tyee Lakes Trailhead as the dawn light began to fill the sky. As with most easy days, we had a big crowd for the day's outing. I was disorganized, rushing and awkwardly reintroduced myself to Andrew Schaper. While I had met him many times before, I had never seen him without his hat and sunglasses. I took the trailhead photo and we set off. I immediately dropped to the back of the pack and maintained a very slow pace with Mike. His Achilles was giving him trouble, but he quickly found that my pace was too slow even for him so let left me. My legs were in great pain following the previous day's outing and I suffered more than I expected. I was at least able to pass 77 year old Ron Hudson and his 68 year old girlfriend Karen Anderson, so I guess my pace could have been slower. After about two miles I reached the first of the Tyee Lakes where I caught up to Iris who was fishing and also nursing an injured knee.
Tumblr media
We passed by four lakes that day, with each of them getting more and more beautiful as we climbed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After 3 miles the trail left the lake basin and began switching back up to the plateau that was Table Mountain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spotted a large group on the top. I wished that I could have been part of the fun, but today was not the day.
Tumblr media
A couple large snowshoe hares darted across the barren plateau. There were humans approaching from all directions!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I passed some people heading down, and I watched as others made their way to other points atop the plateau. There were some pines in between me and the summit, so I took a roundabout way that lent itself to no bushwhacking.
Tumblr media
I found a surprisingly fun summit block. I took a challenging route up and sat on the summit. Emma and Megan were basking on one of the rocks below.
Tumblr media
To the southwest were Mt Powell and Point Powell.
Tumblr media
To the northwest were Mt Emerson and Mt Humphreys.
Tumblr media
To the southeast were Cloudripper and Mt Agassiz.
Tumblr media
There was another point to the northwest that looked nearly as tall, so I decided to go visit it. It was about three quarters of a mile away, but it looked closer. Others had already headed that way so I decided to follow. Sandy slopes took me to another interesting set of summit boulders. This peak did not qualify as a bonus peak, but it made for a worthwhile detour. Besides, I'm a purist. Looking back was the first summit.
Tumblr media
There were a couple possible high points at this location so I scrambled up both piles of rocks. Again they were fun class 3.
Tumblr media
To the south was Thompson Ridge. Some of the more eager participants had continued towards this challenging 13er.
Tumblr media
I then continued a half mile southeast to a third and final point on the plateau. Mason had mentioned finding a Smatko register on this summit previously, but not I, nor anyone else, found it.
Tumblr media
I headed cross country down sandy slopes back to the trail where I found Zee. We chatted for a bit then I stopped at the lake for a refreshing swim. Iris was out and about fly fishing, a true outdoors woman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With a mile left to go, I ran into a challenge participant who was just starting. It was almost noon, but he still had plenty of time being that it was an easy day. He immediately asked me if I had any food. I said no, but this was a lie. I wasn't willing to share my dwindling snack reserves with an adult who could easily buy their own. Later that night, that same participant locked his keys in his car at Copper Top in Big Pine. Luckily, I had already left to investigate the Shepherd Pass Trailhead conditions, so I didn't have to waste my energy with that ordeal.
Official Summary:
Active rest day.
A 6am start was a little early following an arduous day 7, but many were at the trailhead on time. Today was a good day for fishermen and lake swimmers. The summit block was a fun class 3 scramble.
I went to all three points of Table Mountain that were marked on the topo. My feet are starting to hurt really bad so I'm worried about tomorrow. Let's see what my body can handle.

Tumblr media
“Oh, you brought slimes?” the doc says with some surprise, “They look pretty clean, no spores at all. I admit I didn’t think you w-would find anything so quickly, but this is a clear s-stroke of luck.” She gathers several armfuls of bottles and alchemy tools and skitters over to you excitedly.
Tumblr media
“Hold up a sec,” you say quickly as the doc looms over you, “I think we deserve to know all the details before we commit to any sort of .. anything.”
The long bug pauses, glancing from you to the flashing box and back. “O-ok, of course. Yes, obviously. Apologies, friends.” They set the tools down and nervously twiddle their fingers.
Tumblr media
“Th-there’s not enough time to get into the nitty gritty of it, but the short version is this: S-slime is a sort of reactive material. In its r-raw form, like your bodies are c-currently, it’s fairly inert. But when processed, it can be infused to make p-potent medicines. It takes a few hours to prepare, uhm,” they look nervously over to the box again, “M-more time than I th-think Bramble has left at this rate, b-but even if she doesn’t make it, we need a way to stop the spores so they don’t spread and hurt anyone else.”
“Which leads to, uhm, the amount,” they don’t seem keen on making eye contact, tapping their fingers together nervously, “I’d say… one of you, or half of both would be enough for Bramble. That’s a lot to ask, I know, but it’s kind of an emergency. It would be enough to stop the spores and destroy the mushrooms for good.”
Tumblr media
“What about this?” you present the bottle given to you by the voidkin, “It’s supposed to be used on void, but would it work on your patient?” “Uhm, hmm..” they lean in and examine it closely, “I’m certainly no expert on the stuff, but I’ve read a bit here and there.. it’s generally not advisable to take this stuff, but it for sure would do the trick. Uhm, well, if it doesn’t kill her anyway, but she’ll die either way I suppose.” “Couldn’t we use a little bit of the medicine now just to keep her alive while you make up a potion with our slime? Or even better, there’s an even bigger slime deeper in the mines, what if we brought them back and used some of their body?” “Too d-dangerous,” they shake their head, “void medicine is already wild and unknown, and mixing it with another potion is just asking for disaster when we don’t even know how those things would react. Probably badly. Secondly, there’s not enough time to bring that slime here, and we don’t even know if it’s b-been infected. It might end up doing more harm than good just getting them here. It’s too risky.”
Tumblr media
You nod. You consult with Humphrey, and turn back to the doctor. “We’ll split the difference, half of our slime from each of us. The void stuff is too risky, and the last thing you need is void trouble on top of mushroom trouble,” you turn to Soot and bow your head apologetically. They look crestfallen, but nod with determination.
Tumblr media
“Ok, so, I’ve uh.. only done this a couple times before,” the doctor begins nervously as they shuffle through some tools, “But don’t worry, I’ve uh, haha, I’ve got a ‘handle’ on the situation,” they wiggle their extra arms in an attempt to lighten the mood. It doesn’t really seem to work.
Tumblr media
You and Humphrey are resting in a large basin as you watch the doctor get to work. They approach and carefully sink their hands into Humphrey’s body. Humphrey winces a little, but the doctor carefully pulls a small crystal sphere out of them. It’s a mostly clear, faintly yellow, and perfectly smooth gem. What was Humphrey’s body is now just a puddle of goo around your ankles. The sight makes you feel slightly unwell.
Tumblr media
“Don’t worry, they’re perfectly fine! Your friend is safe as long as this core is safe. Look,” they hand you the small core.
A voice ripples through your mind, and you have the strangest sensation of seeing the entire room from the orb in your hands. “I’m good! You can trust them.” You hand it back to the doctor and they set it carefully in a softly-lined box.
Tumblr media
They then sink their hands into your body. The sensation is similar to when the unicorn did this, tho they feel less confident, bristling with nervous energy. You begin to have second thoughts about trusting them as they grasp your core, and begin to carefully pull it outwards.
“You uh, sorry, you need to let go of it.” You try to relax. The doctor pulls your broken core free, and -

Melba Liston
Tumblr media
Melba Doretta Liston (January 13, 1926 – April 23, 1999) was an American jazz trombonist, arranger, and composer. She was the first woman trombonist to play in big bands during the 1940s and 1960s, but as her career progressed she became better known as an arranger particularly in partnership with pianist Randy Weston.
Life and career
Liston was born in Kansas City, Missouri. At the age of seven, Melba's mother purchased her a trombone. Her family encouraged her musical pursuits, as they were all music lovers. Liston was primarily self-taught, but she was "encouraged by her guitar-playing grandfather" who she spent significant time with learning to play spirituals and folk songs. At the age of eight, she was good enough to be a solo act on a local radio station. At the age of ten, she moved to Los Angeles, California. She was classmates with Dexter Gordon, and friends with Eric Dolphy. After playing in youth bands and studying with Alma Hightower, she joined the big band led by Gerald Wilson in 1944.
She recorded with saxophonist Dexter Gordon in 1947 and joined Dizzy Gillespie's big band, which included saxophonists John Coltrane, Paul Gonsalves, and pianist John Lewis) in New York for a time when Wilson disbanded his orchestra in 1948. Liston performed in a supporting role and was nervous when asked to take solos, but with encouragement she became more comfortable as a featured voice in bands. She toured with Count Basie, then with Billie Holiday (1949) but was so profoundly affected by the indifference of the audiences and the rigors of the road that she gave up playing and turned to education. Liston taught for about three years.
She took a clerical job for some years and supplemented her income by taking work as an extra in Hollywood, appearing in The Prodigal (1955) and The Ten Commandments (1956). She returned to Gillespie for tours sponsored by the U.S. State Department in 1956 and 1957, recorded with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1957), and formed an all-women quintet in 1958. In 1959, she visited Europe with the show Free and Easy, for which Quincy Jones was music director. She accompanied Billy Eckstine with the Quincy Jones Orchestra on At Basin Street East, released on October 1, 1961, by Verve.
In the 1960s she began collaborating with pianist Randy Weston, arranging compositions (primarily his own) for mid-size to large ensembles. This association, especially strong in the 1960s, would be rekindled in the late 1980s and 1990s until her death. In addition, she worked with Milt Jackson, Clark Terry, and Johnny Griffin, as well as working as an arranger for Motown, appearing on albums by Ray Charles. In 1964, she helped establish the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra. In 1971 she was chosen as musical arranger for a Stax recording artist Calvin Scott whose album was being produced by Stevie Wonder's first producer, Clarence Paul. On this album she worked with Joe Sample and Wilton Felder of the Jazz Crusaders, blues guitarist Arthur Adams, and jazz drummer Paul Humphrey. In 1973, she moved to Jamaica to teach at the Jamaica School of Music for six years before returning to the U.S. to lead her own bands.
During her time in Jamaica, she composed and arranged music for the 1975 comedy film Smile Orange starring Carl Bradshaw, who three years earlier starred in the first Jamaican film, The Harder They Come.
She was forced to give up playing in 1985 after a stroke left her partially paralyzed, but she continued to arrange music with Randy Weston. In 1987, she was awarded the Jazz Masters Fellowship of the National Endowment for the Arts. After suffering repeated strokes, she died in Los Angeles, California in 1999 a few days after a tribute to her and Randy Weston's music at Harvard University. Her funeral at St. Peter's in Manhattan featured performances by Weston with Jann Parker as well as by Chico O'Farrill's Afro-Cuban ensemble and by Lorenzo Shihab (vocals).
Composing and arranging
Her early work with the high-profile bands of Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie shows a strong command of the big-band and bop idioms. However, perhaps her most important work was written for Randy Weston, with whom she worked for four decades from the early 1960s.
Liston worked as a "ghost writer" during her career. According to one writer, "Many of the arrangements found in the Gillespie, Jones, and Weston repertoires were accomplished by Liston."
Social meaning
Liston was a female in a profession of mostly males. Although some consider her an unsung hero, she is highly regarded in the jazz community. Liston was a trailblazer as a trombonist and a woman. She articulated difficulties of being a woman on the road.
"There's those natural problems on the road, the female problems, the lodging problems, the laundry, and all those kinda things to try to keep yourself together, problems that somehow or other the guys don't seem to have to go through."
She goes on to recount the struggles she experienced as an African American woman, which affected her musical career. However, she generally spoke positively about the camaraderie with and support from male musicians. Liston also dealt with larger issues of inequity in the music industry. One writer has said, "It was clear that she had to continually prove her credentials in order to gain suitable employment as a musician, composer, and arranger. She was not paid equitable scale and was often denied access to the larger opportunities as a composer and arranger."
Musical style
Liston's musical style reflects bebop and post-bop sensibilities learned from Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, and Art Blakey. Her earliest recorded work—such as Gordon's "Mischievous Lady" a tribute to her—her solos show a blend of motivic and linear improvisation, though they seem to make less use of extended harmonies and alterations.
Her arrangements, especially those with Weston, show a flexibility that transcends her musical upbringing in the bebop 1940s, whether working in the styles of swing, post-bop, African musics, or Motown. Her command of rhythmic gestures, grooves, and polyrhythms is particularly notable (as illustrated in Uhuru Afrika and Highlife). Her instrumental parts demonstrate an active use of harmonic possibilities; although her arrangements suggest relatively subdued interest in the explorations of free jazz ensembles, they use an extended tonal vocabulary, rich with altered harmonic voicings, thick layering, and dissonance. Her work throughout her career has been well received by both critics and audiences alike.

150 word meme
Since I’m currently bouncing between fics (I’ve had 8 Word documents open over the last few days) and it’s been driving me mad, I’m going to do this meme and hope it lets me focus.
Rules: send me a number or three from the list below the cut and I will write 150 words in that fic.
1. which death could scarce disgrace (Edward takes Hal to view Richard’s corpse)
Edward had a choice.
A choice that made him ill, that robbed him of sleep and appetite. He made excuses where he could and spent hours pacing his room or hunched over a basin, heaving. His father remarked that he looked pale and recommended a physician, his sister asked if he had lost weight. He almost told them but could not bring himself to – he did not trust them to give a fair answer or even to understand his dilemma.
2. and all this light (Mary gives birth to John of Lancaster, Hal has night terrors)
Mary rolls over onto her side, hugs a pillow to her chest. She closes her eyes and tries to empty her mind or at least distract it. Remembers her boys running in the grass in the evening, dusk in their hair and how it was so clear she thought she could see forever, that the moment would last forever. Her eyes are heavy, her thoughts slow. Sleep, she’s going to sleep—
The door creaks open. Mary frowns and pushes herself up in bed just as a little terrified voice calls out for her. Harry. She pulls open the hangings, squinting to make out his face and then hastily lights a candle, seeing the glimmer of tears on his face.
‘Oh love, again?’
3. the light of hidden flowers (Humphrey and Eleanor Cobham visit 4-year-old Henry VI at Easter)
‘It won’t be like you want,’ she said. ‘I have no reason to be at your side. Everyone knows what I am. And it’s one thing to be it here – but in the king’s household? In front of the dowager queen?’
He frowned, reaching out to cup her cheek. ‘We can sort that. You can come as Antigone’s maid.’
‘‘And, what, I just happen to sleep in your bed every night?’’ she said. ‘You don’t understand. They already know. There’s no point in trying to pretend my position is respectable.’
4. bird bones (Henry VI and Humphrey Duke of Gloucester’s death)
‘Henry,’ Margaret says. ‘You did not eat. You need to eat.’
He thought he had fooled them, moving food around on his plate, raising his hand to his mouth – he has a vague memory of his uncle reading something while eating once, barely noticing what he put in his mouth and Arthur – his uncle’s bastard – laughingly said that you could put anything in front of him when he was reading and he’d eat it without even noticing. He dared Henry to put a live frog on Gloucester’s plate but Henry had refused.
He wonders if Arthur is with Gloucester’s men, if he still tries to put frogs on his father’s plate in hope they’ll be eaten.
He wonders if Arthur hates him now, if Gloucester’s intransigence and quarrelsome nature has been inherited. Arthur had always seemed too kindly-natured to have been Gloucester’s son but once Gloucester was kind.
5. the quintain (another story about the Black Prince and Richard II)
It’s a good day for Edward. Which means that he’s successfully bullied his doctors into letting him out of bed and actually managed to get out of his room and into the free air. Of course, that will only last as long as it takes them to find Joan and appeal to her to send him to bed but in the meantime, he will enjoy the air and the sun and the sight of his son practicing his riding.
6. crowned with roses (Joanna of Navarre meets her new stepsons)
Joanna squeezed her eyes shut. These were definitely brothers. She stood, going to the window where she could look down into the courtyard. Humphrey was clinging to the person who must be Harry, an older boy - lean and broad-shouldered, his hair cropped in a circle around the top of his skull and sun-darkened - while another, sturdily built boy with an unfortunate nose who must be John, tried to pull Humphrey away.
‘John, leave it,’ said Harry.
John’s face darkened. ‘He always gets his way. Just once, why can’t I get to pick?’
Joanna stifled her giggles. Such waring boys, strong boys. And they were hers now,
7. The Brittle Crown (Hal’s year with Richard II, intended to be a novel)
Thomas shoves Harry. Harry shoves him back. They wrestle for a moment, Harry pins Thomas before deciding it’s too much effort.
‘You have your own room and your own bed, why are you trying to steal mine?’
‘We’re leaving tomorrow,’ Thomas says. He goes quiet, lips pressing firmly together. He nudges Harry. ‘Will you be alright?’
Harry scoffs. Of course he will. What kind of question is that? He’s always alright. Thomas rolls over, dropping his head onto Harry’s belly heavily. Harry swats at him.
‘Why did the king call you Hal?’
‘How should I know? Get off.’
‘It’s not a bad name.’
‘Father hates it.’
‘He just hates that the king called you it,’ Thomas says. ‘I think he hates the king more than he hates you.’
8. important pegging fic #2 (Joan of Kent pegs The Black Prince because of course she does)

Medieval Toilet Poetry
Last night I was chatting with @nuingiliath about John Russell’s Book of Nurture, which is a guide, in verse, to the duties of the personal servants of a nobleman (specifically, in Russell’s case, Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester). A lot of effort was expended in finding a particular passage I knew I had read, because the one modernized version out there on the internet omits it (it is a transcription of an edition that is probably about a century old) and as medieval toilets are a longstanding thing in my scholarly work I thought I’d share it with all of you. You can read the entire text, which has a great deal of non-toilet content, here, or large portions of a modernized version of the text at the link above. I actually really recommend it to all my histories peeps as it’s a very useful resource for the daily lives of medieval nobility and their servants. (The full text has an extremely helpful feast menu which the modernized version leaves out, for instance)
In the excerpt below I have changed þ to [th] for ease of reading.
[HOW TO PREPARE A TOILET FOR A MEDIEVAL ENGLISH NOBLEMAN]
Se the privehouse for esement be fayre, soote, & clene, & that the bordes ther vppoñ / be keuered withe clothe feyre & grene, & the hoole / hym self, looke þer no borde be sene, theroñ a feire quoschyñ / the ordoure no mañ to tene looke ther be blanket / cotyñ / or lynyñ to wipe the nethur ende; and euer wheñ he clepithe, wayte redy & entende, basoun and ewere, & oñ your shuldur a towelle, my frende; In this wise worship shalle ye wyñ / where that euer ye wende
[See that the privy house is fair, sweet (smelling) and clean, and that the boards are covered with a fair green cloth, and that no wood is visible around the hole,* and a fair cushion on top of it so that he isn’t bothered by excrement. Make sure there is woolen, cotton, or linen cloth for him to wipe with, and when he calls, be ready with a ewer and basin and a towel on your shoulder; in this way you will win honor wherever you go.]
Tumblr media
*The kind of toilet he is talking about is basically a little closet with a chute that goes into the moat or a pit, and a seat with a hole in it. You can see surviving examples in some medieval castles. Here’s one from the Tower of London that should give you the idea.

Day 294: Sunday October 21, 2018 - “Blaze A Trail”
“Well buddy, this is what we came all this way for - no turning back now.” As I slide out in front of the road closed gate and started packing it up.  3 miles up the road was Lockett Meadow.   Cant be that bad - especially given that we were fueled up.   I coaxed Havarti out of the back seat convincing him this would be a great way to warm up and thaw out!  And I promised him solid off leash time.  Ok, honestly I coaxed him out with “whose here?”   Gets him every time.
The day started at a camp side just a hundred yards away in a secluded little dispersed spot.  38 degrees when we woke up at 630,  Lets get that coffee going! And when the water was boiling I had a great idea to heat up his can of Love Stew and had a good laugh remembering the old chili bomb.  Wont make that mistake again.  I loaded Havarti back up after breakfast as the sun came out on us “come here, I want to show you something.”
And on up the closed forest road we went - Santa’s Little Helper pulling me all the way and around into the inner basin of Humphrey’s Peak.  Good wide vistas that would no doubt would have noticed but not admired from a car window like we were doing now.And those three miles flew by pretty easy.  Never really did get an understanding of why the road was closed, but now at the top I was glad that we just went for it anyway.   Now, time for the big show.  I let Havarti off leash and he did a real good of staying close.   It helped when we got up into the snow and he no guess about which way the trail went.   “This way buddy” and hed run across to the left.  “Nope this way buddy and hed run back across to the right. “Nope still this way buddy.”  Eventually he’d figure it out... Havarti hasnt quite figured out the joy of hiking for the sake of hiking- he spends the whole time trying to figure out where the trail is going next, if there is anything funky to smell, and being in front.  He seemed awfully confused when we finally arrived in the Aspens and I wanted to stop and take pictures and he’d look back with concern and confusion. “This is how I feel when you have to stop and smell every 5 steps.”
Oh man, I love the Aspens. Even today, when they werent as exciting and popping as I imagined they would have been when I was here this same weekend 4 years ago - a lot less quaking - a lot more brown and gree, and snow.  Its been an odd Fall up here.  Wet and stormy for sure.  But I got some cool photos - Aspens, the tree themselves, are pretty - even without the leaves.   The interesting thing that I learned recently is that they are actually all one big organism connected by the roots.   I didnt believe it either and so looked it up - the largest grove being up in Utah.   I thought about this grove of aspens was actually all connected.  I pondered getting deep in reflection on that and decided....nah, not in front of the dog.   I found a good spot up in the grove to hang my hammock and take a nap with the occasional sun breaks.  Put old man Havarti on the long lead, but he really didnt need it - he just laid under me the whole time and took a nap himself.  Itd been a good five miles walk up hill to get to the Hammock spot.   I laid there for a couple hours, enjoying the view. “Best of all, he loved the fall”
We strolled back down some time after noon, and the crowds had followed us up - where we had it all to ourselves to start the day, we passed by so many other people and other dogs, a lot more peaceful and a lot less “good dog” - but I had a great laugh when I finally found a private tree to pull and piss on, and Havarti, following suit, pulled up lifted his leg on the tree right next door.  And on down the hill we went - good stroll.  Just a couple of old troubadours.  After an eye popping adventure getting the car back up and out of there, we were on the road to home.  “Thats a ramble, buddy”  - practically passed out after the 10 mile stroll which for him was probably more like 14.   Didnt even want a treat.  He slept the whole way back as I rolled down through Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona - busy road on a Sunday evening - but practiced a golden rule to whenever possible, take the long way home.   No new tracks today, but some of the most beautiful to be had for sure.
Song: Kenny Chesney - Happy On The Hey Now
Quote: “Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways. ”  ― Oscar Wilde

The San Francisco volcanic field
The Western United States has a wide variety of volcanic features stretching back in time, including the volcanoes of the Cascades Range and the Columbia River flood basalts. There are also many lesser known features dotted around the landscapes, such as this 4,700 square kilometre field located in Arizona.
Volcanic fields tend to be formed by long running series of smaller eruptions, forming cinder cones, maars (craters created by the explosive interaction of rising lava and groundwater, see our post on Germany's Laacher See at http://tinyurl.com/ocx4opr), volcanic domes of viscous silica rich magma (see http://tinyurl.com/qffzkvn) and short lava flows. Most of these features record single eruptions (known as monogenetic).
None of these features alone are particularly big, but together they add up to persistent magmatism concentrated into a small area, in which a variety of magmas rise to the surface through faults in the crust. Parts of the western US are under tectonic extension, where the rocks are being pulled apart, creating such faults through which the molten rock below can reach the surface.
The San Francisco field is on the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon, and displays volcanoes, lava flows and cinder cones, including the SP crater shown in the image. Such geological boundaries between blocks mark the edges of geologically distinct areas, such as in this case the Colorado Plateau and the Basin and Range province. The faults between blocks provide easy routes through which magma can rise. Cinder cones are short lived piles of volcanic clinker, unless they are found in arid areas, where erosion rates are slower.
They usually form associated with other volcanic vents, fed through lateral faults connected to the main lava tube. SP crater is a 249 metre basaltic cone, and has a 7km long frozen lava flow that emerged from its vent as the eruption changed style from spattering to oozing runny lavas. The lava is 30 metres thick. The crater's name is abbreviated to SP because the original name is somewhat rude. The 19th century owner of the land called it the shit pot crater. If the man in question had been more refined it might have ended up as chamber pot crater.
The cone's edge is cemented by a rim of agglutinated lava, formed of melted spatters of lava cemented together during the eruption, protecting the cone from erosion. The spatters are formed as the magma degasses, and the remaining volatile poor magma flows out afterwards forming the lava flow.
Several other more eroded cones are found nearby, showing how the lava shifted its pathway to the surface over time. One vent gets fed and erupts , and the next batches of lava flow up other paths nearby. A total of 600 volcanoes in the field range in age from 6 million to less than 1,000 years ago, mostly consisting of similar basaltic cones, though some lava domes of erupted dacite and rhyolite are also present. The youngest features are at the Eastern edge of the field.
The highest peak is the state's tallest, the 3,850 metre extinct stratovolcano called Humphrey's peak along with the other volcanic San Francisco peaks. The field is almost certainly still active, though it hasn't erupted for a thousand years. Likely eruptions will be small and have little effect, since the regions is remote and thinly settled.
The field is overlaps two national forests, with several ecosystems inhabiting different altitudes. Junipers are replaced by ponderosa pines, which are in turn replaced by the antique bristlecone pines at the highest altitudes.

Praise the Lord, Everyone. Exodus 12:23 says, "When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down." Most of us may remember the story about Moses, telling Pharaoh, God said, "Let my people go." But, Pharaoh was hard-hearted and would not let Gods' people go. Then the ultimate happened; God was about to kill the firstborn of people and animals. The only thing that will save them would be the BLOOD. The Community of Israel was instructed to sacrifice a lamb, take a bunch of hyssops, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some blood on the top and both sides of the doorframe. This saved Israelites from losing their firstborn from the death angel. The shed blood was the key to saving lives. Today we are the disciples of Christ, the adopted Israelites through Christ, who shed His blood for us. When God looks at us, He sees the blood and not our filthy rags. We now have an inheritance that's beyond our imagination. We have been blessed with all spiritual blessings, and by His stripes, we are healed, to name a few. Let us Pray, Praise, Worship and Rejoice together as we put on the full armour of God so that we can take our stand against the devil's schemes. - Clairmont Humphrey Join me now by clicking on the link below. http://streamdb3web.securenetsystems.net/v5/SPRLIVE https://www.instagram.com/p/CQdoaK-F3SH/?utm_medium=tumblr

Shot Rock Vista Point, CA (No. 4)
The Sierra Nevada's irregular northern boundary stretches from the Susan River and Fredonyer Pass to the North Fork Feather River. It represents where the granitic bedrock of the Sierra Nevada dives below the southern extent of Cenozoic igneous surface rock from the Cascade Range. It is bounded on the west by California's Central Valley and on the east by the Basin and Range Province. The southern boundary is at Tehachapi Pass.
Physiographically, the Sierra is a section of the Cascade-Sierra Mountains province, which in turn is part of the larger Pacific Mountain System physiographic division. The California Geological Survey states that "the northern Sierra boundary is marked where bedrock disappears under the Cenozoic volcanic cover of the Cascade Range.
The height of the mountains in the Sierra Nevada increases gradually from north to south. Between Fredonyer Pass and Lake Tahoe, the peaks range from 5,000 feet (1,500 m) to more than 9,000 feet (2,700 m). The crest near Lake Tahoe is roughly 9,000 feet (2,700 m) high, with several peaks approaching the height of Freel Peak (10,881 ft or 3,317 m). Farther south, the highest peak in Yosemite National Park is Mount Lyell (13,120 ft or 3,999 m). The Sierra rises to almost 14,000 feet (4,300 m) with Mount Humphreys near Bishop, California. Finally, near Lone Pine, Mount Whitney is at 14,505 feet (4,421 m), the highest point in the contiguous United States.
South of Mount Whitney, the elevation of the range quickly dwindles. The crest elevation is almost 10,000 feet (3,000 m) near Lake Isabella, but south of the lake, the peaks reach to only a modest 8,000 feet (2,400 m).
There are several notable geographical features in the Sierra Nevada:
Lake Tahoe is a large, clear freshwater lake in the northern Sierra Nevada, with an elevation of 6,225 ft (1,897 m) and an area of 191 sq mi (490 km2). Lake Tahoe lies between the main Sierra and the Carson Range, a spur of the Sierra.
Hetch Hetchy Valley, Yosemite Valley, Kings Canyon, and Kern Canyon are examples of many glacially-scoured canyons on the west side of the Sierra.
Yosemite National Park is filled with notable features such as waterfalls and granite domes.
Groves of Giant Sequoias Sequoiadendron giganteum occur along a narrow band of altitude on the western side of the Sierra Nevada. Giant sequoias are the largest trees in the world.
Two of the largest rivers in California, which form the Central Valley and drain into San Francisco Bay, derive most of their flow from the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada range. The northern of the two is the Sacramento River (which also drains the adjacent Cascade Range and Klamath Range); the southern one is the San Joaquin River.

Hanging Valley Peak via Horton Creek, 2022 Sierra Challenge Day 4
Tumblr media
Hanging Valley Peak is the unofficial name for Peak 12,200 which stands above the historic Hanging Valley Mine to the east of Mt Tom. The Horton Lakes Trailhead was the designated starting point, located at the end of the 4WD road that branches off from Buttermilk Road. Thankfully several challenge participants had capable Jeeps, so we were able to squeeze everyone in and carpool the last bit of rough road to the official trailhead.
Tumblr media
There was a cloud layer that had formed overnight and a slight chance of thunderstorms was in the forecast. This created the conditions for a very colorful sunrise at the onset of the hike.
Tumblr media
The trail started off by following the old road bed from where the 4WD road is now closed off to vehicles.
Tumblr media
After a few gradual switchbacks we entered the Horton Creek drainage where several historic mining cabins remained.
Tumblr media
Mike was a little slow getting ready that morning and had to brush his teeth on the go.
Tumblr media
The most impressive looking peak on the approach was the unnamed Peak 12,808, unofficially referred to as Gable Lakes Peak.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The old road passed high above Horton Lake and resumed switching back up towards the Hanging Valley Mine.
Tumblr media
A few people passed me on this section, including Bob, but I was only racing against the weather today. Once atop the switchbacks, I entered the hanging valley from which the mine is named.
Tumblr media
I decided to follow the old road bed to the eastern side of the Challenge Peak while most of the others approached the peak via the south ridge. I believe my strategy saved a lot of time, since I was able to cover distance much faster on the road.
Tumblr media
Moments later Dylan ran by me, already on his way down. He had a work meeting that morning that he had to get back for. Mt Tom loomed above us to the east.
Tumblr media
There were some mining relics near the end of the road, and from here I started climbing up towards the peak. My pace was really slow, and my muscles complained the whole time. The last 500 ft to the top was a struggle for me, but I would make it. To the east was Mt Tom.
Tumblr media
To the south were Basin Mountain and Mt Humphreys.
Tumblr media
To the southwest was Four Gables.
Tumblr media
To the northwest was Bear Creek Spire.
Tumblr media
To the north were Mt Morgan and Wheeler Ridge.
Tumblr media
Down below in the valley were mining structures.
Tumblr media
It turned out that most people visited Peak 12,120 first, so I was one of the first to reach the summit. Others slowly trickled in, then we waited for the main party to show up so we could take a group photo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was some discussion regarding which point along the ridge was the high point. It felt like the northernmost point was higher, but we would climb both. Zee, Sean Reedy and I then continued towards Peak 12120, since it seemed like we were the only ones that had yet to climb this peak. It was a relatively easy effort, and moments later we reached the top.
Tumblr media
While this peak clearly did not have much prominence, it qualified as a bonus peak due to a technicality. LoJ claimed the peak had 280 feet of clean prominence, when in reality it only has about 200 feet of prominence per measurements from my track. LoJ is the official standard that we follow for the Sierra Challenge, but sometimes you’ve got to take the easy ones when they are given to you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prior to the Challenge I had wanted to climb Mt Tom as a bonus peak, but the weather was getting worse and my body was withered. We descended the sandy slopes back down to the road. Sean Reedy took off with a light jog while Zee and I walked back to the car together. We passed a few people on the way down, including Ron Hudson, Karen Anderson and a mysterious individual who did not want to tell me anything. As we approached the cars, rain started to fall over the Buttermilk Boulders, but we would stay dry for the rest of the hike.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Official Summary:
Dylan Doblar climbed Hanging Valley Peak in 3 hours and 55 minutes. Jonathan Mason, Sean Reedy, Matthew Rosen, Zee Chunawala, Sean Casserly, Bob Burd, Tom Becht, Yumi Vielpeau, Iris Ma, Tom Grundy and Chris Henry climbed both Hanging Valley Peak and Peak 12120. Mike Toffey climbed Four Gables and Four Gables South. Samir Nafez attempted Basin Mountain but DNF. Ron Hudson and Karen Anderson hiked to Horton Lakes. Sean King DNS.
Thunderstorms threatened but most of the precipitation was centered around Buttermilk Boulders and peaks to the south. True distance was 13 miles. My feet are starting to hurt. I am concerned for Day 7.

Inner Basin and Weatherford trail - San Francisco Peak Wilderness, Arizona. Went to Flagstaff to forage lobster mushrooms and after making off with 7 gallons decided to explore the inner basin behind Arizonas two 12k peaks. The trail ended a little prematurely for my tastes so I decided to head over treeline and visit a few high saddles (all summits other than Humphreys are closed to hiking)
