X-23: Innocence Lost & Target X Are The Books That Will Make You Hate Steve Rogers
~~~~~~~~~~
X-23: Innocence Lost is a 2005 graphic novel published by Marvel, following the popularity of the X-Men: Evolution cartoon series which was based off a miniseries of the same name. The show featured the X-Men attending public high school as teenagers while living at the Xavier Institute, which for all intents and purposes served as a group home in the show. The show also served as the debut for the fan favorite character Laura Kinney — AKA X-23.
Following her debut in the Evolution cartoon series, Laura became so in demand that Marvel decided to officially introduce her into the Marvelverse with Innocence Lost. And lemme just say innocence was indeed lost.
Tumblr media
The book focuses heavily on Sarah Kinney, whose a scientist and Laura’s mother for all intents and purposes. Sarah was originally hired by the Weapons Plus program — the same government program that produced Weapon X (Wolverine) — to create a clone of Logan Howlett. But when Sarah failed to create a male clone and instead produced a female clone — this is next part is a wee bit fucked up — she is forced to carry Laura to term herself as punishment.
I bet you’re starting to wonder how Steve Rogers comes to play into all of this.
Welp, following years of child abuse — I mean, training — and being forced against her will to carry out multiple assassinations by the Weapons Plus program, Laura eventually escapes the facility she was raised in following her mother’s death. Grief-stricken and rife with PTSD, Laura decides to hunt down Logan at the Xavier Institute in Target X, which is the direct sequel of Innocence Lost. It all leads up to what, I think, is a very touching murder-suicide attempt.
Tumblr media
Luckily, Logan is saved from the fourteen-year-old girl by none other than….
Steve Rogers
And if you wanna see the irony and hypocrisy that ensues, I highly recommend doing a compare and contrast of these two books alongside of Ed Brubaker’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Or, ya know, watch the movie. That might get the message across a lot clearer.
Happy Reading❤️
1, 3, 4 and 18 for keyless or starboard <3
KH:
1. are they associated with a certain color? what color do they wear the most?
nico: blue. it reminds him of an old friend of his back before the world ended; he wears a necklace with a blue gem and the engraving "V.N". he wears mostly darker shades of colors to avoid blending in with the rest of oraen (aka the city of riches)
hemlock: purple. due to experimenting on himself countless times over and replacing limbs with machines, his eye color as well as his general "hue" (from his vents, cracks in the metal, etc) shine a light purple. wears mostly black... edgelord
val: red. though it is seen as the colors of revolution and is frowned upon by not only her family, but the people of oraen as a whole, she wears it as a form of protest. no matter where she is, or what she's wearing, you will find a piece of red clothing on her.
sarrah: blue as well, but a lighter sky-blue. she distantly remembers the way the sky shone before the war, before her father died in the underkeep. it brings her fond memories, but it's also a reminder of what she fights for.
ivy: green. not only is it for their namesake, but it brings life wherever they go. their club may be littered in red drapes and whatever rubies they've traded for, but there are green accents everywhere. they refuse to forget the underkeep was once a place of life.
3. weapon of choice? any particular reason they chose their weapon?
nico: guns. because of his leg, he can't move really fast—though there are days that are better than others—so he sticks to long-range weapons. carries two pistols most days but also has a rifle.
hemlock: his hands. though he's lost an arm, he's modified both hands to be able to hide knives underneath the skin. think of marvel's wolverine or edward scissorhands.
val: her words, most definitely. due to her upbringing, she hasn't really touched a weapon, much less trained with one. she can, however, get under your skin with a few careful words.
sarrah: words as well, but he's more diplomatic with them. he can diffuse almost any situation at hand, but if that doesn't work, he knows his way around a hunting knife better than most.
ivy: their hands, though definitely not in the way hemlock uses his. they're good at hand-to-hand, and when they're in the ring, there are Very few who can actively beat them.
4. how crafty/resourceful are they?
nico: very resourceful—needed it to survive in the underkeep, and needs it now to try and keep hidden in plain sight in oraen.
hemlock: crafty yet reckless with it. take one look at his body and how some of it is machine and other parts are actually human, and you'll understand.
val: not physically resourceful/crafty, but when it comes to speaking, she knows what to say and uses her environment to her advantage.
sarrah: not crafty but resourceful. they know what is safe to eat or drink, how to survive, and where to watch, hide, and listen.
ivy: crafty. they can make something out of scraps, and it'll work wonders. resourceful in the sense of listening and keeping an eye out.
*NOTE: many of these characters ARE resourceful/crafty because of their upbringing in the underkeep. you need to have these skills in order to survive. val does not have these skill sets because she's lived in oraen all her life.
18. their opinion on lying, stealing, and killing?
nico: good on all three accounts
hemlock: good on all three accounts
val: I wouldn't say she's against all of these things but she does not appreciate liars (the council, oraen, and eventually nico) and firmly believes there are other solutions than murder. however. things happen. :) and she changes her views pretty quickly afterwards.
sarrah: does not lie, does not harm, does not steal. if anything, she listens in on information and trades it that way. understands that lying and stealing are integral to survival in the underkeep, and she understands that violence can sometimes be the only solution to injustice.
ivy: good on all three accounts, however they do not steal themself. if someone needs something, they try and get it to them in other means (like food, clean water, a home, etc)
**no one in this book is morally "good" for the record. they all do things that aren't acceptable by today's terms.
STB:
1. are they associated with a certain color? what color do they wear the most?
ignacio: orange. he IS the tangerine. however, he wears baggie shorts and a red, sleeveless shirt as well as an orange sash around his waist. his hair is also dyed orange (non-bleached) <3 and gold jewelry that he's snagged from jumpin' around ships.
caspian: blue. for a while, he didn't wear Any blue (insert backstory here) but rather gold and red. but then ignacio finds him, and he starts wearing more blue :3 fancy fits, dresses (eventually), and even a casual sweater now and again.
atlas: red. it's xer favorite color, and xe has a large red jacket that xe wears on the regular. xe pairs it with... probably one two many outfits, tbh, but it gets thrown around quite a bit in the fray. xe wears the jacket, a white shirt, and some jeans on the best of days.
harrow: white. wears a loose white shirt as well as a pale blue robe/shawl. his clothing is fairly simple rather than complicated, but it's mostly because he has texture problems. he's like a beacon in the dark LMAO bright and shining.
jesse: yellow. wears a yellow t-shirt with blue overalls that are practically always stained with grease or oil. mechanic things. when they aren't working on anything, though, they have a few cardigans they shuck on :)
mai: light brown. wears tight fitting shirts and jackets, ripped pants, and high boots. silver piercings as well as a tight necklace. she'll wear suits also, when the mood strikes her, and always carries a book of some sorts with her.
kasumi: dark green. wears black pants and a loose, dark green kimono with a patterned haori over her shoulders. he also has two green tear-drop earrings and a black ribbon to tie her in place. wraps her chest in bandages/gauze (NOT to bind)
will: black. okay because it has been brought back from the dead, it tries to wear the brightest, gaudiest clothing EVER to try and bring life in its closet. however, it does wear a black necklace and gloves though.
theodora: pink. favorite color, and her scrubs are a really light pink:) when she's not in doctor mode though, she wears the weirdest t shirts. like. fish fear me fish fear me fish fear me shirts. also would wear shoes made of denim
3. weapon of choice? any particular reason they chose their weapon?
ignacio: fists:) throws hands. if you know nothing about this wip, know this: it is a one piece rewrite. okay? okay
caspian: his voice, mostly, but also his teeth and claws. if need be, though, she also has a staff strapped against his back that can transform into a spear. hates using swords bc of her family.
atlas: more or less a pacifist, but (insert one piece rewrite in here) xe can manifest limbs and eyes out of thin air. helps with navigating as well as spying + stealth missions
harrow: he's a gunsman. has two revolvers that are named:) his aim is probably one of the Best on the Icarus' crew other than mai. discovered he was good at it and honed the skill.
jesse: more of a mechanic than anything, but if they need to fight, they have a giant hammer at their disposal that they can whack people with. bam bam bam
mai: daggers. doesn't matter where she is, she always has a million or so daggers at her disposal. her aim is near perfect like harrow's, but it's because of years on the run.
kasumi: two katanas she lays at her hip. they're unnamed, but one has a green hilt and the other has a black hilt. the green one is most important to her for backstory reasons:)
will: a garrote. a lot more of a defensive fighter than anything—my man sings and plays instruments. however, it also uses its words to cut through people. think of vicious mockery dnd
theodora: girlie is 15 and can shout at you until you weep. it's happened before. caspian taught her how to wield a dagger if need be though.
4. how crafty/resourceful are they?
they're all crafty/resourceful to an extent! they're pirates:) they gotta be to survive.
18. their opinion on lying, stealing, and killing?
ignacio: steals and does kill, but he's very specific about it. if someone hurts someone wrongfully, he will hurt them back. if someone needs help, he will help them. yk... I love him. but he's usually p chill. doesn't lie bc he doesn't see the point in it
caspian: fine on all accounts but doesn't really lie. he more hides the truth. will kill for Anyone on the crew but especially ignacio—especially since ignacio was the one to save his life. something about a first mate and his captain yk?
atlas: top ten liars of all time. doesn't steal because xe is really bad at it; only kills if xe is absolutely needed to.
harrow: good on all accounts especially if it is meant to help the crew. doesn't usually thieve though.
jesse: good on all accounts again. will whack someone really hard with their hammer. usually the main burglar of the group — they always need parts
mai: also good. doesn't really lie more along the lines of she's just really quiet and Doesn't Say Things. kills; has kasumi's back in every fight.
kasumi: all good [broken record noise] though she doesn't quite see the point in lying herself. he, alongside caspian, is one of ignacio's "wings"
will: it's good with all. it's been dead for a hot second, like. it's pretty chill. especially if it has to do with the crew or ignacio
theodora: of the mindset of you have to do what you have to do. she's 15: of course she lies. but everything else she leaves up to the crew—but that isn't to say she'd sell them out.
365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
September 21st - Wolverine
James Howlett was born to a wealthy Canadian family near the end of the 19th century.  As a young man, he was forced to abandon his home and family following tragic circumstances.  This coincided with the initial manifestation of his Mutant powers; powers that include a greatly accelerated healing factor, keenly enhanced senses and bone claws that protrude and retract from each hand.
James' father was killed by his mother’s lover.  James attacked the killer, slashing at him with his newly found claws.  Believing he had killed the man, James fled.  He adopted the name ‘Logan’ and wandered the world, finding adventure, violence and bloodshed everywhere he turned.  He would eventually travel to Japan and became a student of the warrior sensei known as Ogun.
After fighting for the Allied Forces in the Second World War, Logan relocated to a quiet village in rural Japen. Here he studied under the sage, Bando Saburo, so to learn how to be a man of peace and leave his warrior nature behind.  He fell in love with a local woman named Itsu. The two wed and conceived a child together.  Sadly, Itsu was killed by the Winter Solider as arranged by the villainous Romulus.
Believing that both his wife and child had been killed, Logan abandoned his efforts to live a peaceful life and returned to his violent ways. He later ended up a member of the Canadian special forces division known as Team X.  Herein, Logan began using the codename ‘Wolverine.’
After numerous missions with Team X, Logan became an unwitting subject of the Weapon X program.  His bones and claws were coated in an indestructible alloy called Adamantium.  His healing factor enabled him to survive the process and it made him into a near unstoppable killing machine.  Logan was additionally placed under deep hypnosis and told that he was not a man or individual but rather an emotionless weapon and instrument of death.  The experiment went awry and Logan entered into a berserker rage, killing the various scientists and technicians working on the project.  He wondered into the woods like a savage animal.
Logan was discovered by Mac and Heather Hudson who showed him kindness and enabled him to regain his humanity.  Regaining his senses, Logan found that he lost nearly all his memories of his past, having no idea who he was, what had happened to him nor where he came from.
Returning to the guise of Wolverine, Logan joined Department H’s Canadian National superhero team, Alpha Flight.  Herein he was tasked with hunting down The Incredible Hulk.
Some time thereafter, Wolverine was approached by Charles Xavier.  Xavier discerned that Wolverine was a Mutant and he invited him to join his team of Mutant heroes, The X-Men. Xavier offered to use his telepathic powers to attempt to help Wolverine regain his lost memories.
Proving to be a challenging addition to the X-Men due to his aggressive behavior, Wolverine was constantly in conflict with his fellow teammate, Cyclops. Over time, Wolverine gradually grew very fond of the X-Men, considering them to be his family.
Along with a recurrent member of the X-Men, Wolverine has also become a noteworthy member of the Avengers and The Fantastic Four. Moreover, he has been tasked to run the secret Mutant strike team known as X-Force to protect Mutantkind's interests by any means necessary.
Wolverine would ultimately regain his memories of his past.  He also discovered that his child with Itsu had not died but rather went on to become the villain-turned-hero known as Daken.  He would additionally meet Laura Kinney, a young woman who was conceived using his genetic material and who possessed Wolverine’s same powers.  Laura has become something of a daughter to Logan and the two have shared the mantle of being The Wolverine.
The hero has featured in the Fox Films’ X-Men movies, portrayed by actor Hugh Jackman.  Wolverine first appeared in the pages of Incredible Hulk Vol. 1 #180 (1974).
Hunt For Wolverine: Weapon Lost #1
I figured this was only nominally going to qualify as an X-Men book anyway, but picked it up because Cypher.
I forgot that Soule seems to dislike writing the X-Men about as much as I dislike reading his writing about them.
This issue is abut how great Daredevil, Misty Knight, and Soule’s new Inhuman character are and why they need to team up and look for Wolverine. And Cypher gets to show up for about three pages as a filthy, starving, internet-addicted social maladjust. So yeah, won’t be spending any more money on this. But really, it’s my own damn fault for 1) having enough faith to pick up this book when the character I was reading for didn’t matter enough to rate cover appearances and 2) not remembering that Charles “the Terrigen Mist is like a peanut allergy” Soule still seems to think that the X-Men were in the wrong for not holding the Inhumans already massively adjusted cultural values above the survival of their own people.
Tumblr media
So yeah. If you’re reading this as a fan of Daredevil, you’ll probably like it. If you’re here for the X-Men, give it a big miss.
