• He treats everyone younger or younger looking than him as his a child. No arguments. He's going to dad you to death.
• When he's thinking hard on something he pouts. If you don't know him very well, you'd think he were about to cry, not thinking about whether he wants to go eat out for dinner or cook something at home.
• Cuba will accept any dare without thinking. Head empty, no thoughts. This man is out here to impress not only you but himself too— he had no idea he was capable of balancing on one foot while holding two eggs in the same hand with his arms out stretched until he actually did it.
• Volunteers at hospitals in his spare time.
• Do not fall asleep on the beach. He will bury you. In case you are America, he will also write or draw very rude things on your face.
• Gives the best bear hugs.
• Cuba sleeps walks when under extreme amounts of stress.

America, sadly: Everyone. All the time.

“But what luck I have to call a man like you my son. It is an honor you cannot understand. One day you will have children and if you have just one who is as dear as you are to me, you will understand how blessed my life has been.”
(from left to right, top to bottom: al-andalus/umayyad, spain, portugal, bby cuba, spain)
historical footnotes (and a bonus comic!):
obligatory disclaimer that spanish colonization of Cuba and other places was Bad, to put it lightly- just because i portray two nations having a relationship analogous to family does not mean the two have good or even healthy relations
al-Andalus was the name of the Iberian Peninsula while it was under Muslim rule. The Umayyad Conquest of Spain took place in the 710s AD, and succeeded largely due to the fragmented nature Iberia and Visgothic rule, who had taken control after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Under Caliphate of Cordoba, al-Andalus was a cosmopolitan center of learning and culture, with advancements in trigonometry, astronomy, medicine, and art. Muslim rule in Iberia eventually fell to the rising Christian kingdoms in the Reconquista, which concluded with fall of the Emirate of Granada in 1492, the same year Columbus made that fateful landing in Hispaniola.
(technically, Spain and portugal have other iberian sibs at this time (and continue to do so!) but just imagine that they’re off playing while port decided to stay to see tonio’s weird music shenanigans)
tried really hard to research to make the clothes historically accurate, but my research wasn’t really satisfactory, so i can’t attest to how accurate they are, especially the first part! and i will be the first to admit that I made portugal’s coat periwinkle blue mostly because i thought it looked nice lol
(…..also spain’s breeches would most certainly not be skin tight but i claim artistic liberty on that one)
In the first panel, Spain is playing an oud, which is a short necked, pear shaped lute. It was brought to Iberia in the Ummayyad conquest, and fused with the previous lute tradition under the Romans. There have been many depictions of musicians playing the oud throughout Umayyad Spain, which would go onto influence European music traditions, and it continues to be a popular instrument in the Middle East, Turkey, and Iran!
(now that i’m looking at it, this oud must’ve been custom made for spain because it’s rather small for compared to their typical size LMAO)
In the second panel, Spain is playing a vihuela, which is 15th century string instrument that is shaped like a guitar, but tuned like a lute. It was brought over to the New World and is often used in Mexican mariachi bands!
The quote is technically a wee bit off base because it implies that Cuba was Spain’s fave which…… wasn’t really the case until spain lost his other colonies in the Latin American wars for independence WHEEZE
rest in piss tonio

HWS Cuba headcanons
I really like Cuba and I think about this guapito a lot, so I thought I’d share some of my headcanons in here!
When he was young he spent a lot of time bedbound, so nowadays he enjoys spending as much time outside as he possibly can. He loves going on walks, visiting the markets, going to social gatherings, etc.
Because he's very extroverted and sociable he has a LOT of human friends. People like to confide him him because he’s both a good listener and kinda forgetful, so he’s great at keeping secrets. (Another reason why he might get along with miss Angola, maybe?)
He’s one of the countrytans that has changed his name the most. Since he’s always in heavy contact with his people, he likes his name to blend in with the trends. His current name is Yotuel (a common cuban name meaning ‘strong’ that first became popular with the ‘Generación Y’).
Has a lovely baritone voice, and it’s a joy to hear him speak. He can also sing, but he hates the attention that comes with it, so that’s only reserved for people who are very close with him. He also really likes to sing for himself, when a good song comes on on the radio.
Contrary to popular (fanon) belief, he’s not agressive at all. He’s a very chill guy and hardly anyone has seen him mad. He even tries to avoid using foul language and smoking in public out of fear that a child might see him and copy him.
He is, however, very outspoken, but tends to soften the blow by putting his ideas out in a humorous way.
Not organized or punctual by any means, and he’s always surprised when other people are. He just loses track of time easily so he can be chaotic to deal with. It’s very unlikely that he’ll answer messages or calls because he put his phone on silent once and it’s stayed like that ever since.
He really enjoys drawing and painting, as well as practicing sports, and that’s why most of the time he has his hair up, to avoid it getting in his face all the time.
Has a very practical approach to life and is quite spontaneous. Contrived and stilted behaviour as well as people who dance around topics are a huge pet peeve of his.

Prussia: Punch him in the stomach. Then when he doubles over in pain, kiss him.
Veneziano: Tackle him!
Spain: Kick him in the shin.
Cuba: Dump him?

hey anon, I accidentally posted this privately and even if i made it public it wouldnt show at the front so :///// hope you see it!
obligatory disclaimer that colonialism and spanish colonialism of cuba was bad and just because two nations have a relationship similar to parent-child relationship does not mean it was good or healthy
Cuba for the longest time was not the most favored among the Spanish colonies, and was considered to be a mere neglected stopping point for the Spanish fleet, on their way to plunder the mainland before returning to Spain with vast mineral riches. Up until the 18th century, it was subject to lots of attacks from pirates, british privateers and french corsairs. While defenses were bolstered, this didn’t do too much, as in 1628, a Dutch fleet plundered the Spanish ships of Havana, before English admiral and pirate Myngs occupied part of the Island.
a few select examples from Cuba’s childhood drawings....
