"I was always more of a quiet kid, greatly preferring my books and toys, and the company of those that I was familiar with. I suppose that's why Fritz and I got on well -- We were of the same temperament and had more than a couple shared interests. Being a part of such an unconventional family hasn't always been easy... Especially now that I'm more grown and am more aware of tensions brought about by politics and the like. But I wouldn't change it for the world."

(L to R Back) Otto (Order of St. John), Niklot (Reiner's son, Neubrandenburg), Konrad (Berlin), Gilbert (Prussia), Rahela (Gilbert's wife, Romania), Reiner (Brandenburg), Ilse (Potsdam), Johanna (Koenigsberg), (L to R Front) Ludwig (German Empire), Sztefa (Silesia) - Gilbert and Rahela were wed in 1866, after Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen came to the Romanian throne as King Carol I of Romania. The marriage is purely political, but the two maintain a cordial and warm friendship. much to Erzsi's dismay - Niklot is Reiner's son, born from a human lover he had before the 30 Years War. Father and son were only recently reunited in the 1820s. - Sztefa is Gilbert's adopted daughter, taken in during the First Silesian war, and raised in part by Frederick II. Served in the volunteer corps during the Napoleonic era disguised as a man. Is Ludwig's scary lesbian older sister.

~Name~ -Kal [Former Capital Representative of Königsberg]

~Age~ -20

~Gender/Pronouns~ -Cis, He/Him

~Sexuality~ -Asexual

~Appearance~ -Like Filbert (Berlin), he too looks like a mini Prussia -The only difference between them is that Kal has long hair, often pulled into a ponytail, and glasses -Has a nose ring (matching with Filbert) and several piercings on both ears, also has some freckles -Usually has on some sort of baggy hoodie, pocketed jeans, and knee-high leather boots. No shirt...usually

~Personality~ -Mostly acts like a mini Prussia -Over-energetic, always excited, along with slightly toned down cockiness -But he knows when to calm down -A big people person -Big brother energy -Can get a little protective over loved ones, primarily Filbert

~Extra Not Mentioned~ -Dating Elias (Stockholm) -The retired capital of Prussia, he is -It is, very easy to get him and Filbert (Berlin) mixed up because of their appearances -Wants a big family -Very physically active and always keeps himself busy -He took up knitting and absolutely loves it -Has a white rabbit named Gil -Runs a nursing home for all the Ancients

“They still get a bit wary at times, Reiner especially, but overall my family seems happy to have Ludwig back with us again; for which I am truly grateful. Speaking of Ludwig, he’s come such a long way. He’s capable of walking and even running now without tripping much --- If it wasn’t for the obvious scars, no one would ever guess that he was once dead.

I will be returning and resuming my studies at Ingolstadt once the summer break ends. In the meantime, I admit that I’ve been... Going through the notes I compiled while working on bringing him back. I ought to destroy these to keep them from falling into the wrong hands and yet I simply can’t bring myself to.

... I will keep them for now, see if I can learn anything else from them, and make a decision before I leave for school once more.”

“I may have built a reputation for being the ‘Army with a State’ but practising medicine is where I will always feel the most at home --- Not the military. Having a scalpel or saw in hand, sewing wounds shut, creating tinctures and poultices... It all feels like second nature to me; like it’s what I was always meant to do.

And I haven’t taken the oath yet, at least not officially. I never formally went and graduated from a proper medical school, after all. I would love to go through formal schooling but I’m afraid I simply don’t have the time. Maybe one day...”

and yes, reiner almost always cooks when the family goes to koenigsberg on holiday. konrad, gil, and johanna always squabble at the end over who gets to wash the dishes with johanna on team ‘you are guests i’m not letting you do chores’, and the boys on team ‘you’re the host you’re not touching a single dish’. when ludwig grows older he volunteers to do dishes before the squabbling starts sdfsdd.

Tldr; They’re all Protestant on paper but their stance and practices vary greatly

And on another little note: I do headcanon that Reiner was originally the representative of the Stodorane tribe in his early days as a nation, which was a tribe of Polabian Slavs who lived in the Brandenburg area before the days of Christianization. After doing some poking around I found that the Stodorans primarily worshipped the god Triglav and I think Reiner still holds that belief.

That was a pretty recent development however, since post thirty years’ war he turned full atheist and lost all faith in any kind of god. When all the hurt and anger started to ebb away though, I think he found himself wanting to believe in something again and made the personal decision to go back to the beliefs he was raised in.

“When the disease progresses to the point of blood poisoning there’s no curing it and death was certain to follow shortly. Thanks to our nature as nations, death didn’t have to be permanent for my sister. Of course I can say that with certainty now, but I remember being terrified that maybe she’d die and never wake up again... Or worse, that I’d be called back to Malbork before that happened and I wouldn’t know until much later.

The month or so I spent in Koenigsberg over the course of the plague was the longest I’ve spent with Johanna since I came back from Venice with my Grandmaster --- And she was barely conscious for most of it because she was just so sick. Clearly my younger self had yet to learn to put his priorities in order,”

The map I used as reference was this one from Brittanica and the colors indicate approximately what year the first cases of the plague started cropping up! And I’m still marvelling at how Poland was still left relatively unscathed like wow.

Also this was very much inspired by a plot bunny that grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go last night. Long story short, the idea was that Mikael stole all those herbs he’s got in hand from the Knights’ personal stores when he heard that the hospital where his sister was being treated might be running out of things they needed to make medicines to control fevers and bleeding among other things. It wasn’t an easy thing for a child who was pretty much conditioned to fear doing anything that might upset his Grand Master to do, but fear for Johanna’s life and the guilt of never being there for her won out in this case.
