Here’s some photos from a really cool exhibit at the Gajoen Hotel in Tokyo. It’s a grand hotel that was built in the 1920’s. One wing has been preserved with its original architecture and decor. It consists of 99 stairs, with traditionally decorated chambers branching off every dozen steps or so. This year, yhe hotel invited various artist to produce cat-themed art to fill each room.

1) The first room compared the viral cats of last era (Banzai Neko) and this one (Tama the station master) by... making giant felt sculptures of them. There were also very lifelike normal-sized felt cats dotted around the room.

2) This room told the Tale of Genji in cat form. I found their little faces so endearing.

3 and 4) This one had a wall-to-wall collection of cat-themed cafe cards, matchboxes, etc. I had a lot of fun picking out favorites.

5) Celebrities as cats.

6) This giant lolita cat greeted you as you entered the exhibit.

Why are there only 99 steps in Hyakudan Kaidan, “Stairs with 100 steps”? 🤔 Well actually, there are a couple of reasons 👇 1️⃣ There's a belief that odd numbers are positive numbers. "99" is consisted of two "9"s and since "99" itself is also an odd number, it is believed to be extra lucky. 🤞😊 2️⃣ There's a theory that "unfinished aesthetics" are long-lasting. It's believed that a perfect state will not last for a long time, so subtracting 1 from 100 and leaving room for improvement is better😌 🤨 The Hyakudan Kaidan has often been referred to as a department store of ornamentation or the Palace of the Dragon King of the Showa Era. 😍 When it first opened in 1931, Tokyo was recovering from the devastating earthquake. This year marks 90th anniversary of Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, known for the Japanese gorgeous decoration and designs. In celebration of the anniversary, Hotel Gajoen Tokyo will hold the event “A Museum Hotel of Japan Beauty” at Secret Gallery in Paris on November 15. At this event, guests can enjoy its original washoku performance, demonstration of woodwork technique “kumiko”, and short film set in the hotel. There will be also another event “Hyakudan Kaidan Exhibition – Glory of Japanese Art” from November 29 to December 24 at Hotel Gajoen Tokyo. The event will take place in the Hyakudan kaidan (the hundred stairs) area which has been designated as a Tangible Cultural Asset of Tokyo. The hotel will show the artworks decorating the Hyakyudan kaidan, such as paintings, architecture, and sculptures by using Motion Graphics.
