The boyfriend just landed and I told him I took a nap to make sure I could stay up for a bit while he gets a Shinkansen ticket and travels to his final destination and he said “Thank you. I’ll need my operator.”
Did he just make a Warframe reference?

Organizing the trip
If the events you'll be going to are in the same city as the one you're travelling to, it'll probably be very easy to organize everything, but if you have to move around or go to more than one live, you'll have to look for transport, acommodation, food, etc., so I've made this guide sharing a bit of my experience in case it is useful for someone when they are organizing their own trip.
Transport
Even though it's possible to buy a JR pass, which enables us to take any JR trains, some metro lines and some buses for the period we get it for, we thought it was a bit too expensive. Also, once activated, you have to use it in a certain period of time (that is to say, if you have a 7-day pass, you can't use it on 7 random different days, it will last exactly for a week since you first used it). However, it's true that travelling on train is really comfortable and fast, so if you don't mind spending a little bit more, maybe this option is worth it for you. Thinking that the tickets had been already quite expensive, we tried to look for other alternatives and we found a bus company, Willer, that offers passes for more affordable prices. There is a 3-day pass, a 5-day pass and a 7-day pass, but they don't have to be consecutive days, you have a few months when you can use them any time. Depending on the dates you'll be travelling, you can also get a discount: if you travel only from Monday to Thursday, passes are cheaper. Each day you use the pass, you can take up to 3 day buses and one night bus. After checking our live plan, we chose the 5-day pass including weekends. Also, we always took night buses, so we could sleep on the bus and save some money from the hotel. Night buses usually leave between 10 pm and 12 pm from Tokyo's city center and arrive at the destination around 7 am, so it's possible to use the rest of the day to go sightseeing. Plus, busses are adapted, so seats are more comfortable, they have a thing to cover your head in case you want more privacy, they have lockets to charge your electronic devices, etc. They'll also make a few stops and you can get off the bus to buy something or use the bathroom at the service area.
Tumblr media
However, we didn't go to every live by bus, so I'll briefly explain our travel plan:
Bus to Sendai (July 5th) - Day 1 of the bus pass // Live at Sendai // Night at Sendai (July 6th) and train to Utsunomiya (July 7th) // Live at Utsunomiya // Train to Tokyo (July 7th)
Train to Saitama (July 9th) // Live at Saitama // Train to Tokyo (July 9th)
Bus to Kanazawa (July 11th) - Day 2 of the bus pass // Live at Kanazawa // Bus to Tokyo (July 12th) - Day 3 of the bus pass
Bus to Nagoya (July 14th) - Day 4 of the bus pass // Live at Nagoya // Bus to Tokyo (July 15th) - Day 5 of the bus pass
Bus to Osaka (July 17th) // Live at Osaka // Bus to Tokyo (July 18th)
As you can see, the last two trips Tokyo-Osaka-Tokyo weren’t included in the bus pass and I had to buy them separately, but doing that by train can be around 15000 yen, while it was only 5000 yen by bus. For Saitama, since it's only half an hour from Tokyo, you can easily get there by train for around 500 yen. On the other side, since the lives at Sendai and Utsunomiya took place one after the other, we decided to spend the night at Sendai and go directly from there to Utsunomiya (it's half-way between Sendai and Tokyo). In any case, Willer doesn't have buses from Sendai to Utsunomiya, so going by bus wasn't even an option. At first, we thought that it was possible to take local trains, which are slower and, therefore, cheaper, but when we arrived to the train station we were told that there were only shinkansen (bullet train). When you buy your tickets, it's possible to choose a carriage with reserved or unreserved seats. We chose the latter because it was a bit cheaper and, since the train had such a high frequency (maybe it's just that it wasn't rush hour, I don't know), there were a lot of empty seats, so we could sit down. If you look for information about the tickets and timetables online on Hyperdia (you can only check, you can't buy tickets), it might be understood that the price of the tickets will be the one that pops up when you select your seat type.
Tumblr media
However, it isn't like that, to that amount on that menu, you have to add the base price that is written in the "fare" column (then, if we choose an unreserved seat, it won't be 3530 yen, but 8040). You can probably picture our faces when the lady selling the tickets told us the actual price. In order to go back to Tokyo from Utsunomiya, there are local trains, so you can choose between going on a bullet train (40 minutes more or less) or take one of those local trains (an hour and a half), which are also a lot cheaper (1500 yen one-way).
Acommodation
As I mentioned before, we were travelling on night buses so we didn't have to pay for a night at a hotel. However, we did have to stay for one night at Sendai. The original plan was to not spend a cent on acommodation and just find any way to spend the night there, but when we arrived to Sendai we saw that it wasn't that simple. At first, we thought that, being summer, since it's hot in Japan, we could just stay at a park or something. But rainy season was a bit longer that year and, once there, it was raining and cold. Since we couldn't stay in the open, we tried to find a place to stay. We thought that, since konbini are open 24 hours and some have an area with sofas or seats to eat, we could just stay there. This might sound like a good idea, but in fact that area will be closed by 11 pm, probably to avoid people doing what we were planning to do. Therefore, now out of options, we finally faced the fact that we would have to look for a real acommodation. Being only one night, we didn't mind sharing the bathroom or bedroom, so we ended up choosing a hostel that was 2000 yen per person. In case someone goes to Sendai and wants to stay there, it was the Sendai Guesthouse Umebachi. It is a traditional house, rooms are for four people and the bathroom was shared (there were two showers, but they are closed so no one will see you). In the mornings they offer coffee, milk and toasts, so we could grab some food before leaving. Plus the staff speaks English. The only problem we encountered was the bed, since it was a futon. It was okay at first, but not being used to sleeping on a hard surface and given that the sun rises early and there are no window blinds, we were already awake at 5:30 am.
Food
Depending on your budget, you can either go to restaurants or find cheaper options. Among those, konbini food is okay. For 300-400 yen there are premade dishes (and they are surprisingly yummy), but for 100-200 yen there are sandwiches, small bento boxes (with omelette, chicken, sushi, etc.) and onigiri (the tuna and mayo one is a hard drug). If you buy cup ramen, you can ask them to prepare it for you, and you can also ask them to heat the premade dish you've picked. If you go to restaurants, there are some Japanese fast food chains, like Yoshinoya, CoCoIchi or Tenya, but I admit we just went in whatever place we found, be it a konbini, restaurant or fast food chain. If it helps, we found out about some traditional food from different cities and I can link to some restaurants we went to, in case someone wants to go to the same place.
Tokyo: Our criteria to pick restaurants was completely random, but we went to some that we liked. In Asakusa, at Kaminarimon Maruka we had some cold noodles. In Shibuya, we ate at a sushi restaurant, Uobei. It is not the best sushi ever, but it's okay and cheap (it will arrive to your seat on a conveyor belt), and in Shinjuku we went to a yakiniku restaurant, Rokkasen. In Ikebukuro, even though it's a chain, we went to Tonkatsu Wako. I love tonkatsu, and the rice, cabbage and miso soup are "refillable", so you could ask for more, it was awesome.
Sendai: There was a restaurant near the hostel that they recommended to us. It is quite small, but the owners were nice and they were fascinated about us being there. The staff doesn't speak English, but they asked if yakitori and sashimi were okay (I loved the sashimi), and we ate that. Some salarymen found us entertaining and ordered typical dishes from Sendai for us to try. I don't remember what the first two were, although one was some kind of oyster and the other one was fish, but the third one was fried tofu (I remember because it was super dry and I didn't like it, but the other two were good).
Utsunomiya: The typical food from this city are gyoza. There are a lot of restaurants in the area near Heaven's Rock, so it'll be easy to find one. There was also a mall (and even though we couldn't find the source, it smelled like there was a pastry shop) and there is also a cafeteria called Barisai Cafe where they sell pancakes, cakes, etc.
Nagoya: Eel is typical from this city, but we were a bit disgusted by the thought of it, so we ended up having lunch at a Okinawan-style meat restaurant.

Travel insurance
Even though it might seem useless, we hired a travel insurance with IATI because we had read that health service in Japan is expensive. After all, it was worth it, because my friend got sick and they wouldn't even sell paracetamol at the pharmacy without a prescription, so we had to go to the doctor just for that and we weren't charged anything, even the insurance company helped us get an appointment for that same evening. Also, the doctor who helped us spoke perfect English and she was really caring.
Internet access
Being two people, we decided to rent a pocket wifi. It is a portable router that works anywhere you go. The battery lasts around 10 hours, but it had an extra battery to recharge it, so it could last a whole day. The good thing about pocket wifi is that there is no data limit and you can connect more than one device. We rented it here. It is also possible to buy a data SIM card. You have different options and prices, depending on the period you want it for, the number of GB, etc. You can order them online, before starting your trip, or just get them already in Japan, since there are shops at the airport where they'll install it for you.
Places to visit
Since we arrived early at each city, we could seize the morning to go sightseeing. I'm writing below the names of the places we visited in case you'll be going to any of these cities and want to check this out.
Sendai: Aoba castle, Zuihoden
Utsunomiya: Oya-ji (you can take a bus directly from the train station), Utsunomiya castle
Kanazawa: Kanazawa castle, Kenroku-en, geisha district (there is also a temple district here, it's signaled)
Nagoya: Nagoya castle, Atsuta-jingu
Osaka: Osaka castle, Dotonbori, Amerikamura

Traveling Japan Without A Rail Pass
If you are planning a trip to Japan and are wanting to stop at more than one city you have probably heard of the Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass). JR passes are great for those who wish to transit between many cities in a short amount of time just exchange you receipt for the ticket when you arrive and BOOM unlimited access onto all JR lines. The only problem with this is some itineraries (like mine was) aren’t worth the price of the pass and instead purchasing individual tickets throughout the trip would be more price conscientious. (To see if the JR Pass will save you money enter your trip plans into the website here.)
If this is the case for you then you might be wondering, “What are my options to get around Japan?” Well, my first piece of advice would be to get an IC card when you arrive. Each region has its own version of this card (Tokyo: SUICA/PASSMO, Osaka: ICOCA), but they all work the same way. IC cards are just prepaid cards that you tap to the gate when you enter and exit the subway platforms. These are a must when traveling within large cities! No fare calculating, no restrictions on subways lines, and no keeping track of individual tickets when transferring! These cards can be purchased in most large stations and can be refilled at all of them. Purchasing/refilling cards is a simple process with the machines all having an English option; just choose how much you want to put on the card and insert the money. When in Tokyo I purchased a Suica card and was able to not only use it within Tokyo but also in Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka. These cards are not limited to just subways and trains either. I was also able to use it to purchase goods from convenience stores, vending machines, and ride the city/airport buses.
Tumblr media
At some point you may be finding yourself needing to riding a bullet train to transfer between long distances and this for me was the biggest worry. Every blog and website I read only told me how to purchase and use a JR Pass when riding bullet trains. It wasn’t until I found this video did some of my questions get answered. I bought my tickets the day before my departure at Tokyo Station. There were two different types of vending machines in Tokyo Station to purchase tickets for the bullet train (Shinkansen), both were the same except one was cash only while the other accepted credit cards. (That’s right finally something in Japan that will accept credit cards!!!!)
To figure out what train to take I recommend two options. The first would be to look up directions using google maps. I used this to do my smaller, same-day transits. Google maps (or your phone’s pre-downloaded map app) work great and are extremely reliable! The other option is using Hyperdia this website is good for looking up train times for bullet trains. Just type where you want to go and what day/time and the app gives you the best options. Both of these options will give you a fare cost and details on any transfers that will need to be made.
All in all Japan’s train system is fast, reliable, and over all user friendly! If you are planning on traveling to anywhere in Japan know that train travel is a cheap and easy way to transfer between locations. Have any other questions on how trains work in Japan? Feel free to submit a question here!
Happy Travels!

That Which Comes After the Dream: Returning to Japan after JENESYS 2.0
By Hikaru Yamato
What happens after a dream is fulfilled? JENESYS 2.0 granted my dream of visiting Japan. Once we returned, not a day has gone by without wishing I could go back as I felt that I left a part of myself there.  The memories of our trip and the people we met are all still very vivid in my mind. After more than 2 years, setting foot in Japan once more brought forth nostalgia and excitement.
Tumblr media
Our first visit was in Japan’s most beautiful time of the year – spring. In my trip, I came at a time when summer is almost over and is transitioning to autumn. This 7-day trip was mostly an anime pilgrimage. From Tokyo, I went all the way to Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto which is one of the settings in Yuki Midorikawa’s Natsume Yuujinchou. Next stop was Otsu, Shiga for the Omi Jingu Shrine which is a must-see for Chihayafuru fans. I also went sightseeing in Arashiyama, Kyoto before returning to Tokyo. I spent a day in Ikebukuro, a known otaku shopping area after Akihabara and the setting for Durarara!! I was waiting to bump into anyone from Dollars as I got lost looking for animate and Sunshine City!
“Prefecture-hopping” as I call it was an absolute adventure! Having printed maps on hand and knowing basic Japanese enabled me to get by. At one point though, I almost got lost looking for my hotel! I am thankful for the kind guy I happened to pass by who gave me directions. I didn’t expect streets in Shin-Osaka to be almost empty at only 9pm in the evening!
Tumblr media
Planning ahead is definitely key for a successful trip. The first step I did was to make a list of all the specific places I wanted to visit. I trimmed this list down considering their location, travel time, and transportation cost. My itinerary included places across multiple prefectures so I opted to buy the Japan Rail Pass (http://www.japanrailpass.net/en/) which gave me unlimited access to JR trains except the Nozomi and Mizuho shinkansen. The next step was to plan my day-to-day schedule. For this, I had to consult the train schedules over at hyperdia (http://www.hyperdia.com/en/). I also looked for affordable places to stay and booked accommodations as early as 6 months ahead so I had considerable discounts on their rates. I stayed at a hotel, ryokan and guesthouse.
Japan is a wonderful country that makes you want to visit it again and again, if not stay for good. Would you believe I was already planning my next trip as soon as I got back? There are just so many more places to see that time seems to never be enough! Until the next adventure!

HEYA I LOVE UR BLOG !!! 💖💖 your japan bujo is so cute aa !! do u have any tips on how to survive there w/o knowing the language ?
.+:。(ノ・ω・)ノ゙oh ma goodness I am SO sorry this reply is super late ˓˓(ᑊᘩᑊ⁎) thank you so much!! i love yOUR blog a lot omg there are lotsa tips I have but here are just a few (for traveling) ヽ( ・∀・)ノ
1. In addition to using Google Maps, download an app that is geared towards trains! I’ve only used NaviTime but have heard that Hyperdia is good as well (i just don’t like the hyperdia interface lul) Train will probably be your main mode of transportation so it’ll make it easy to get around! 2. Learn some basic phrases about ordering, asking for directions, and how to thank someone will get you a long way! If you stay in the touristy areas (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) you’ll be okay not knowing much Japanese. Usually the stores in that area have an english menu or at least know some basic english phrases.
3. Avoid taxis!! Honestly the price for taxis are OUTrageous and would recommend that as a last resort. Do try to take train and bus whenever possible. Keep in mind however that trains typically stop running around 12~1am.
4. Although there are more and more wifi spots appearing in Japan, I still would recommend having a pocket wifi with you. It’ll come in handy a LOT, especially when exploring unknown areas.
I could go on and on about traveling in Japan so just hmu if you want some more! Hope this somewhat helped heh .+:。

Conexión a internet
Sendai: Castillo Aoba, Zuihoden

Day 1 London > Japan Woke up hungover as fuck. Don’t think I slept properly, really. The previous day’s exploits at Hospitality in the Park had taken their toll, but certainly were worthwhile. Such a nice send off with Toby, Kris and Emma, and in smaller doses Coops and Lucy. Dragged my arse out of bed at 6:30am, having gone to bed a little bit worse for wear at around 12:45. Thankfully mum had cooked me dinner before I slept so after a nice hot shower and some ibu + codeine I started to feel better. I quickly gathered my gadgets which had been left charging and slipped them into the bottom of my bag. Some concern around having them close to the edge - I hope they don’t get broken by a cackhanded, angry bag handler like the crazy guy in Croatia who literally launched mine and Katie’s (and everyone else’s!) bags into the luggage storage space for our bus from Pula to Zagreb. Decided to leave my 3DS, in favour of spending my time more productively – reading, journalling, and hopefully finding an app to edit my Go Pro footage on are on the agenda. Got to the airport with plenty of time to spare despite mum faffing for about 10 minutes whilst I waited at the door. In truth we had left ample time, anyway, and there was no need to worry at all. So thankful to have had mum look after me the last few days, it’s been really nice. And obviously very appreciative of the lift to the airport! No queue for check-in. Minor hiccup at oversized baggage as the belt wasn’t working (I was sent there because my backpack had straps?!), but that was resolved within 2-3 mins. Security was rapid… Unsure why but my shoulder flagged up on the body scanner. He also swabbed my shoes. Bizzarre. Why do they make you get to an airport two hours before your flight if you can pass all of the above within 10 minutes? Still feeling a bit worse for wear I head to the pub (duhhh). This time I’m feeling well enough to have my usual pint 📷 before take off, along with some smashed avocado on a muffin. Tasty. I kill some time talking to Boj about (amongst other things) how aeroplane toilets work. Tho asks me if I remembered my booster seat for the plane. Hilarious. Vicki sends me some Japan tips: -Good luck being veggie outside of Tokyo, but try to use ‘niku wa tabemasen’ (I don’t eat meat). -'Sumimasen’ is 'excuse me’ and can be used when asking for directions in conjunction with a map. -Hyperdia is the best app for trains She also tells me she has friends in Kyoto who we can link up with, and that I should defo go to The Phillipines - specifically El Nido on Palawan. After a quick look on the observation deck 📷 and I’m finally boarding the plane. It’s the most empty plane I’ve ever been on! Almost everyone (with exception of families who are seated together) has 3 seats to themselves 📷 . I get through a fair chunk of my book and listen to some music; I notably listened to The 68’s first album which is decent - raw rock 'n’ roll/indie vibes. Ended up sitting in the middle seat of my three with the seatbelt super loose and lying down across them, with three blankets stacked under my head as a makeshift pillow. Living the dream! Unfortunately the dream did not extend to my vegetarian meal, which was rice, boiled veg and what i presume to be pumpkin? Not. Great. Still, manage to get two glasses of wine, so it’s not all bad. Arrive in Moscow and have quite a few messages to get through… Realise I am being charged £1.50 per mb for data and quickly switch to WiFi. Astrid had messaged me to wish me well for my travels, which I thought was really kind of her, given the conversations we have had recently. Pass the time by having some chats with Iona and Katie as well, with Iona telling me about some sort of Scottish swingers island? Odd, but amusing. I order nachos at the TGI Friday bar, and a pint and get charged the equivalent of £13📷! Board the next plane, thinking it’s gonna be a 5 hour flight but it’s actually more like 9 or so? Not 100% sure. Unfortunately it’s also fully booked, by the looks of things. Sleep a bit, watch Trainspotting 2 -disappointing, frankly. Not much happens, and it has one of those lame endings where it turns out one of the characters wrote the book. Food again. Same meal again. Blegh. Another glass of wine though. Presumably my last of the journey, but hopefully not! The guy next to me says 'cheers!’ and we have a bit of a chat about the purposes of our journeys, and the advantages of eBooks over real books - he says he uses a Netflix style service which costs the price of two books per month, but that he and his wife get through 100 (!!!) books per year. Seems a really nice guy but we both go back to our films. It’s at this point I’m writing this first entry of my journal, which I intend to update every day. It strikes me that Ive written a lot about a relatively boring day. Waffling on, as usual! Hopefully I’ll have more interesting things to add tomorrow, as I’ll be in Toyko! I’m a little bit excited, but it still seems surreal to me. I am a bit nervous about getting public transport to the hotel, but Maddy has sent me instructions of how to do so, and I’ll be picking up my data sim and have airport WiFi to help me navigate, also. Hope I can sleep some more on this flight, but I feel wide awake, and John Wick 2 awaits.

Ōkunoshima, Bunny Island in Hiroshima!
Tumblr media
If you don’t know yet, Ōkunoshima is a tiny island located in the Hiroshima Prefecture. You may have seen some videos on Facebook that show rabbits chasing after people for food. It is indeed taken in Ōkunoshima and also the rabbits become a little aggressive around you when they know you have food. There are hundreds of wild rabbits roaming around and you can feed them with food bought from Tadanoumi port or bring your own rabbit-friendly food (carrot, lettuce)
The island has a very dark history but let’s not go to that. You can actually book and stay at the hotel (Kyukamura Ohkunoshima) there. Also, please bring your own food if you can because there are no other food vendors around except the hotel.
FOR EASY TRAIN ROUTE PLANNING, use Hyperdia!
Alright, so how do we get there?
Take the Shinkansen to Mihara station.
From Mihara Station, take the JR Kure Line for Hiroshima to Tadanoumi Station
Coming out of Tadanoumi Station, turn right and walk straight all the way. Turn right again just before the bridge and down to Tadanoumi Port (Refer to map below)

4. At the port, please buy the tickets for the ferry from the ticketing machine. A round trip cost 620yen (2016). If you have not brought any food for the rabbits, you can buy it from the shop. The shop also sells pretty cute souvenirs. It is better if you plan which ferry timings to take first before you start your trip
5. Once you’ve reached Ōkunoshima, there will be a hotel pick up bus waiting at the pier. You can take the bus and start your journey from the hotel. There are plenty of rabbits around the hotel. Either that, or you can just start your way from the pier.
6. As there are two piers at Ōkunoshima, make sure you check the ferry timing schedule and the correct pier to go when waiting for the ferry to go back to the mainland! Similarly, please use Hyperdia to plan your route back from Mihara station to wherever your accommodation or next destination is!

There are quite a few scenic spots in Ōkunoshima, so I really recommend taking a day trip there if you are going to the Hiroshima prefecture!
