Some books I have read in 2023
(mostly romance fantasy, but not only that)
I'm not really a bookworm, but I try to read about one book per month. This year I have read 17 books (overachiever!), most of them romance fantasy novels, but some also of a different fantasy genre. Here's a selection of these (the ones I have something to say about), not sure it interests anyone but maybe there's someone out there looking for a recommendation or a non-recommendation. I will only write my thoughts on the book, not the synopsis or details about the plot, but there will be links to the page on Goodreads. Here are the books I'll talk about after the "keep reading" break:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you have read any of these, feel free to drop me a line to let me know what you thought about it!
Spinning Silver - Naomi Novik
This was my second attempt with this book - my first attempt ended in DNF, because I was extremely confused by the POVs (it contains multiple POVs in first person, without an indication of who's talking at the beginning of the chapter) and somehow I was not hooked in the story. My second attempt much later went differently, this time I was more invested in the story - I liked the main character a lot and ofc given my pattern with evil villains with long white or blond hair, I have a soft spot for the Staryk king. The POVs are still a little confusing, but it was remarkable how past the first lines of confusion, you could recognize who was talking because of the individual styles of the characters.
From Blood and Ash - Jennifer L Armentrout
I'm going to say what everyone says: if you liked ACOTAR and are looking for something of the similar kind, this book is for you. BUT, I'll admit I liked this one more than ACOTAR, because I liked both main characters a lot. Usually I find the MMC in these books a bit irritating (unless they're evil kings with long blond hair like the Staryk king above) but this time I liked him. I also enjoyed the worldbuilding, it kinda has to do with vampires but with a different take than the traditional one or the Twilight one. Overall interesting. It ends with somewhat a cliffhanger but I was not really eager to continue with the series yet, so I haven't read the other books.
(this is one of the romance fantasy novels and contains explicit scenes)
Warbreaker - Brandon Sanderson
Aaahhh, Warbreaker. This was my very first BrandoSando book and I finally understood why everyone in my book club is such a huge fan of this writer. The worldbuilding and the magic system here were very original and interesting, and well thought (though I think some parts of how magic worked were a complication that could have been avoided). Each of the characters has their own personality which is well described and fleshed out, and the plot is engaging. If I was a more avid reader, I would have definitely read the other books of the Cosmere, but I'm a lazy reader so for now this is the only book by this author I have read.
The House in the Cerulean Sea - TJ Klune
This was such a cozy read! I loved this book, the plot maybe was not epic but I was so impressed by the characterization given to each character - also, the audiobook version on Audible was very well done in this regard. I loved each and every one of the children who appear in this book, it is one of those books that just make you smile the whole time and leaves you with a warm feeling in your heart.
Kiss of Death - Alice Wilde
I'm not going to say much about this book - I'll just say that this was an example of what could happen when you trust a reel on Instagram or a video on TikTok. This book was definitely not what the reel on Instagram that kept popping up in my feed promised: I expected a dark romance with a cool villain, and there was nothing of that, I even found it rather childish at times. It was not for me.
The Serpent and the Wings of Night - Carissa Broadbent
This is another romance (with explicit scenes), and it also relates to vampires. Very interesting worldbuilding, and I liked the main character. I also kinda liked the MMC, yeah. What I liked the most was the plot and the various fights and challenges, rather than the romance per se. But the romance was good as well. It ends with a cliffhanger, but I have not yet read the sequel.
King of Battle and Blood - Scarlet St. Clair
Another one with vampires. I'm not even a fan of vampire stories (I strongly dislike Twilight) but this year apparently I stumbled against everything that has been written about vampires in the last ten years? Anyway, this one was OK - another romance (with spice), I was not sure I understood how these vampires worked so maybe I would have needed a bit more explanations at the beginning, to know what we're dealing with. Overall I have forgotten what this book is exactly about and the characters, so maybe I would not put it on the top of my favourites this year. I can recommend if you’re already a romance fantasy reader, simply because this book is always in all rankings, for your “knowledge of the field”.
Nettle & Bone - T Kingfisher and
A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking - T Kingfisher
I have read these two books one after the other, and I liked both a lot. I can't really remember the plot (usually I forget the plot of a book as soon as I finish it), but I enjoyed the witty writing style, smiled and laughed a lot while reading, and loved the characters.
The Bridge Kingdom - Danielle L Jensen and
The Traitor Queen - Danielle L Jensen
A nice series, I think it was a well-written enemies-to-lovers (I don't remember if it contains explicit scenes, probably it does). The plot was interesting and the two main characters were likable, so overall I can recommend the series to those who are into romance fantasy.
Hyperversum trilogy - Cecilia Randall
Well this year I actually only read the 2nd and 3rd (I have read the first one last year), anyway - this one is for Italians only, I fear, because there is unfortunately no translation available. Which is a shame, because this is one of my favourite series ever. I'm not sure if this trilogy is to be classified under fantasy but I guess so, anyway it has to do with time travel and history (medieval). If you are Italian and something like this can be of interest for you, then I recommend it!

All of you should maybe consider reading the Hyperversum saga by Cecilia Randall, an Italian author.
It's a great fantasy/sci-fi series of books and I've read half of it over the past few days (do not recommend, take your time, I am Insane), and is mostly set in the 13th century in France. The setting is great and it's written really well!

Rules: in a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you.

Witches abroad, by Terry Pratchett
Coraline, by Neil Gaiman
And then there were none, by Agatha Christie
the Raven Cycle, by Maggie Stiefvater

@lawful-evil-novelist tagged me on this and it seemed fun. Don't have many mutuals to tag, but i will tag @girlcaligula and @agapantoblu (only if you want to obv)
Do you play an instrument? I do not, though I did some piano lessons as a child. I actually have a terrible ear for music if every music game I have ever played is any indication
Favourite book character? My current favourite is definitely Kimmuriel (Legends of Drizzt), even though I have not been reading much lately; my first favourite was Jasmine (Deltora), but the one that's in my heart and probably overall favourite is Ian Maayrkas/Jean Marc de Ponthieu (Hyperversum)
What's your star sign? Rather not say
Favourite colour scheme? I love gradients and I love black+red/purple combinations. Night sky vibes.
Naps or long sleep? Both. I sleep all of the time.
What languages do you speak? Italian and English fluently, I spent some years studying French, Latin and Chinese but I would barely be able to put sentences together
Dreams/aspirations? I want to go into academia, do research on Algorithm Theory and Logic, publish and maybe teach a new generation
Long hair or short hair? SHORT HAIR. Absolutely. I am ashamed to admit how much simply trying to grow my hair stressed me out last year
Tea or coffee? Tea (warm fruity green teas with lavender honey). I drank coffee once and it tastes horrible + makes my hands shaky so I do not recommend it.
Bring a book character to life or go into a fictional world? If I could bring my friends with me, clearly the second, though I do not know which world we would go into. Possibly professor Layton, I think we would all incredibly enjoy a world where most people just like puzzles. Recently though I have become obsessed with Persona and I feel like that's the one I would pick. But if I had to be alone I'd rather bring a fictional character to life; I'm going to say Essek or Caleb, to round up my current fixations and also because I would LOVE to see how magic and real world physics would interact

This is my gift to this fandom, silly drawings of himbo 1 and himbo 2. I tried to be faithful to their descriptions in the story but it’s highly likely I missed details </3 so Ian is Big Strong dummy and Daniel is Teeny Smol dummy.
Special thanks to Agap who has been a great sport about my dragging Daniel for literally everything he does, including breathe. I’m on like chapter 3 or 4 and I am just. Ripping this boy up.

ok let me go off on a tangent here
does anyone even care let's be real
can we talk about the phenomenon of immersion while reading a book?
a fantasy world completely made up by the author and yet you feel like you can picture every detail in your mind
a book set in present day about something outside your life/experience at the end of which you feel somehow connected and more affectionate towards an aspect of your life, a discipline, a culture you previously couldn't care less about
a historical setting described so well that makes you feel like you're there
with just words
and above all, the feeling of having lost something once you stop reading or finish the book, because you were there just a page ago and it was real, but then you realize that those experiences are not really part of your life and you feel somehow robbed of those memories
not every book is like this but when you find one that does it well, DEAR GOD
it's such a bittersweet feeling
