I come from a toxic and pathological home… I don't know much about self-care and things like that… can you give me some advice? I would like to start this… I never had a mother to teach me this and I'm on unfamiliar ground… I can't even put on makeup because it was forbidden.
First of all, I'm so sorry that you weren't allowed to experiment with self-care in your upbringing and I think it's great you want to take the initiative to learn now. I started getting into self-care around 13 and I think I can give a fairly simple and affordable run down. *take notes*
Skincare: The key to skincare is learning what your skin type is (dry skin, oily skin, or combination) and what issue you want to fix (hyperpigmentation, teen acne, etc). Then try to develop a morning and night routine that you do EVERY DAY. The simpler your routine is the better. 5 steps is usually normal. Invest in a good cleanser, exfoliator, moisturizer, serum, and SPF. There's a great YouTuber named Hyram who suggests great products for all different skin types. I suggest watching a few of his videos and taking notes.
Tumblr media
Hair: Hair Care is different for everyone. Always look at hair tutorials and wash routines from people who have the same hair texture as you, and same hair struggle as you (length, frizz, split ends, etc.).
Always go for the slightly more expensive hair care products (but it doesn't have to be anything crazy) and try to avoid parabens if you can.
Keep your hair wrapped at night with a bonnet or silk wrap so it's preserved
Wash, Condition, and Moisturize it regularly
Keep it styled even if the style is a simple ponytail. You'll eventually find your signature style.
Body/Fragrance: Invest in some smell-good lotions, soaps, body scrubs, and perfumes.
Decide how you want to smell/feel every day.
Some really basic scents are cotton candy, vanilla, and strawberry but you can experiment.
Bodycology and Treehut have really good scents for an affordable price and can usually be found in Walmart or Target.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Makeup: If you're a beginner I'd search "Natural Everyday Makeup" tutorials on YouTube and take notes from women who are the same color as you.
Usually, a little concealer under the eyes, a nice sharpened eyebrow, a little eyeliner wing, mascara, and lip-gloss will suffice for beginners.
You'll need to buy a setting spray so your makeup doesn't melt throughout the day, a beauty blender, and a concealer brush.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Additional Tips
Make an "It Girl" playlist that you listen to in the morning or whenever you're getting ready with music that makes you feel pretty.
Buy a nail filer kit and keep your fingers and toenails filed and polished with a simple clear nail polish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dedicate relaxation time to yourself. This can be watching chick flicks on the weekend, or taking yourself out to eat when you have free time. Get used to treating yourself here and there.
I hope this helps and enjoy your journey💕✨

Bonjour. If I may be so bold as to ask.....
... what skin care did you do/ use?
LOL for sure!
I have really oily and acne-prone skin (yes it can continue into adulthood, no it is not fun... it doesn't help if it's a side effect of your meds), but with this routine my skin is clear basically all the time
This post is not sponsored LOL
First, I do wash my face twice a day (most of the time).
Second, the MOST important component of any skincare routine is sunscreen (regardless of skin tone, yes, I mean it)
I use Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen 40 SPF, it leaves no white cast so no excuses!!!
Face wash: CeraVe Salicylic Acid Cleanser (daily) Panoxyl Acne Foaming Face Wash (1-2x a week.. it has benzoyl peroxide) CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, Normal to Oily Skin (1-2x a week with Panoxyl)
Treatments: The Ordinary 5% Lactic Acid (DAILY) The Ordinary 10% Niacinamide (periodically) The Inkey List Collagen Booster (periodically)
Moisture! (cuz after all that drying shit I need to replenish LOL even though I have oily skin this is very important!): LUSH Eau Roma Water Toner (just helps the moisturizer go on better and it smells nice. I also dilute it with distilled water.) Belif Aqua Bomb Moisturizer The Ordinary Plant-Based Squalane (only in the winter) Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado
And, in case you missed it! SUNSCREEN (I am extremely passionate about everyone wearing sunscreen all the time. It will save your skin and also possibly your life) Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen 40 SPF
A lot of these things sound kinda fancy, but they're actually pretty affordable. CeraVe and Panoxyl are drugstore brands and The Ordinary and the Inkey list are usually not more than $10 per thing. Everything else is like >.> hey it's my birthday may I have a sephora gift card please and thank you.
One time Sephora was giving out little sample bottles of sunscreen as a 100 point perk and I had a lot of points because most of the time their stuff doesn't interest me since I don't wear make up or need serious hair care... and I asked the girl "well how many can I get?" and she said "up to 14" >.> so I got 14 and then it was like getting a full size tube for free LOL
I started watching Skincare by Hyram on youtube and I recommend checking him out.
So... there you have it.

my issue is that the lines between hobbyist and professional became blurred? bc too often on youtube or tiktok you have people who think they know what they are talking about but had 0 proper training and despite maybe good intentions end up spreading misinformation. i'm not saying you need formal education but even when it comes to being a mua some makeup influencers gloss over things like sanitation, meanwhile a mua who lives off doing bridal makeup can't fuck it up and give someone pink eye bc welp they will loose all bookings. yea you can learn a lot on your own but i have an issue with people like hyram speaking over actual derms? i do find most tiktok plastic surgeons disgraceful however they tend to know more than some random person who makes big claims despite being just someone with passion for body mods but who has minimal anatomy knowledge

Doing Good For My Skin Literally Has Never Felt So Good
I read hundreds of reviews, watched countless YouTube videos, and then finally decided to give in and try it. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic: worth the hype?
110% yes! I love this product. I was so skeptical about trying it because I thought with the brand being so highly successful they could have easily paid for their reviews and endorsed beauty bloggers and skin blogs to say the product worked. However once I started seeing the product in countless skin care tutorials from models like Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, Kaia Gerber, Skin by Hyram, and saw it won Allure Best of Beauty, I was throughly convinced maybe it might be worth the hype. With over 13K thousand 5-star reviews, it now has 13,001 because I absolutely love this product! This serum has completely changed the texture of my skin. It’s helped heal my blemishes, evened my skin tone, and honestly just makes my skin glow on a whole new level.
This serum is the perfect combo to my retinol. I discovered Ferulic Acid actually helps retinol work better. I love love love this product. I know a lot of people are probably scared of the $165 price tag, but a little goes a long way, it lasts, and on top of everything else… it actually works!! <3

hey!
I realized it is imperative I take better care of my skin, so I was wondering if you could point me to what to use because your skin looks great! the internet is big and I get lost.
thank you in advance!
hey! much like in my last response on skincare I think the first thing to do is to define what issues you are having with your skin first and foremost, and then you do the research from there. Hyram on youtube taught me a lot so I think he is a great place to start!

My favorite cleanser that I've been using for 6+ months is what's giving me so much sensitivity in my skin and I'm APPALLED
This is what happens when I listen to boss bitch aestheticians without looking at the ingredients more thoroughly and I literally was dying on the hill that it could absolutely not be my oxygen wash :( I have to step my game UP & thank god for Hyram on YouTube because he is literally the only reason I even thought to look at the ingredients in my cleanser & now I'm replacing it with the Centella & Green Tea cleanser cause it's probably the only other cleanser I have that will be beneficial to my skin that's freaking the fuck out
Anyways I'm done venting about this

inconsequential things that linger in my brain much longer than they should
one time i was watching an asmr skincare roleplay and the girl got up to sunscreen and she talked about the sunscreen she was using but then she said that it had fragrance and it wasn’t hyram approved and she was sorry but she wanted to use it up and when she replaced it she would buy one that’s hyram approved. she apologised. in a fake roleplay video. because an unqualified skincare youtuber didn’t approve of her sunscreen. that she wasn’t putting on anyone but herself. but it was important enough. to apologise

generally for skincare you do the lightest products first! :) i only have three. a niacinamide serum, a moisturizer, and a beta hydroxy acid serum. i do the exfoliator first (the beta hydroxy thing) then the other serum, then moisturizer. also youre not supposed to do like all the treatments and serums every day apparently. i do because thats what works for my skin but it doesn't for most people! so watch how your skin reacts to things. of course wait a week or so to make sure your skin is adjusted to a skincare regimen before you switch anything again (unless you have an allergic reaction :P) because your skin will be Upset at changes.
i watch this skincare youtuber who taught me a lot, Hyram, if you want to get into skincare/learn more hes the dude!! :) and he has some really good vids on like the most basic skincare routine if you dont want anything too much or the skincare routine under i think $30 if you dont have much to spend. like me. im a lazy broke bitch i need the least amount of work and money spent as possible lol
oh this makes a lot of sense!! when i was working during summer i used my thick ass suncream first bc my monkey brain thought the thicker cream should be first to help products sink in and then my moisturizer would not sink in AT ALL and i just thought my skin was impossible to work with. THANK YOU!!
the every day thing makes sense. i have 2 products i use semi regularly - like every 2 or 3 days. well its 3 products if you count my facewash as well, but other than that i have a serum like yours too and moisturizer. for some reason i always thought the more products the better and i’d overwhelm myself so much with all the things i see online so knowing other ppl have a light routine as well is comforting! oh i also have a toner though and im unsure of when and how to use that so im gonna have to do research. waiting a week is something ive honestly never done but i’ll do that from now on!!
thank you so much for the recommendation!! i will check it out :D thank you. also yeah i dont want to spend a lot of money on skincare, but if there was something that worked that was pricier i think it’d be worth it but that intimidates me a lot because what if i spend a lot of money on something that wont even work. so i think im better off sticking to cheaper stuff! im the same with least amount of work though i hate hate hate putting in too much work (especially for things i dont understand and dont have a big interest in) but generally im a believer in little work and big results <3
thank you so much for this ask i appreciate it so much!! i hope youre having a good day!

2022
People have realized that Instagram makeup looks cakey in real life and began to do their makeup in a way which would look good both in reality and Instagram. Firstly, skincare has became a huge trend recently with youtubers such as Hyram sharing their knowledge and promotiong products for healthy skin. A popular saying is “Skincare first, makeup second”
Tumblr media
Therefore an approach that most people take now is to take care of their skin first before applying makeup, instead of slapping on full coverage products to cover their acne. Therefore more breathable light products have become a trend.
Tumblr media
I find irony in the fact that Maybelline is not vegan or cruelty free yet they are promoting the image that they are “green”, which would make a consumer think that they are.
With the popularity of the show Euphroia and the rise of TikTok, many people are getting more experimental with their makeup looks, with colorful eyeshadow and bold liner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
even though Zendaya (on right) is wearing a bold eyeshadow look, her skin still looks like her skin which is a big trend nowadays, natural beauty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
List of trends: Sheer foundation/skin tint, little bit of concealer, not too much powder, soap brows (fluffy brows with clear gel), colorful eye makeup, bold eyeliner, lots of blush on high points of face and on the nose, highlighter to add a glowing finish to your face.
I followed the rules the best that I could, i’m not used to wearing colorful eyeshadow but apart from that this is actually how I would do my makeup everyday.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why do we do our makeup this way? Brands promoting the “natural” look to us, popularity of skincare and the amount of skincare brands out there now, popularity of TV shows such as Euphoria, rise of TikTok and social media in general.

Oils for skin care
💜 Oils that help skin barrier repair Sunflower seed oil Safflower Argan Coconut Borage Jojoba Oils rich in linoleic acid (high linoleic:oleic acid ratio) are wonderful for preventing transepidermal water loss and aiding in barrier repair.
💜 Oils with anti-inflammatory effects Shea butter Rosehip Jojoba Safflower Grape seed Coconut Sunflower seed Argan
💜 Oils with anti-oxidant effects Grape seed Coconut Jojoba Rosehip Shea butter
💜 Oils that may help skin aging Jojoba Rosehip Almond Oils rich in triterpenes or polyphenolic compounds can, to varying degrees, fight off free radicals and combat aging.
Reminder: Essential oils can be incredibly sensitizing. They should be avoided by those with sensitive or damaged skin.

Hi! You're amazing with your answers to our skincare asks. Skincare mythbuster! I have a question. Every day I used the ordinary retinol (1%) in the evenings and their niacinamide + zinc in the morning and my skin became very sensitive. When I started using either one or the other it calmed down. Is this a common problem or is this just me? And, to get the best results, should these products be used every day or every other day? Also: what do you think about skincare with Hyram on youtube?
ooh, 1% retinol is a LOT to use every day, especially in combination with other actives. you only need to consider using retinol more often than once or twice a week when you’re in your late 20s/30s, but even then it’s good to have one or two nights in between applications to let your skin process it. remember that 1% is a high concentration for retinol. i think it’s more likely to be a reaction to overuse than to the combination with niacinamide, though that could play a part as well. niacinamide can generally be used every day, but on nights where retinol is being used i recommend skipping all other active ingredients and using only basic stuff like hydrating/soothing moisturizers suitable for sensitive skin.
about hyram... i used to watch him, but his holier-than-thou attitude and his extreme hangups with fragrance (while praising brands/products/other ingredients that are just as sensitizing or more really) turned me off. additionally, i don’t vibe with his claim that he’s a skincare expert. he works for a youth to the people counter at a department store; he’s not an aesthetician nor a derm nor a cosmetic chemist, so i prefer to get my info from people who actually have the qualifications they claim to have (recs: cassandra bankson is an esthe, dr sam bunting is a derm, and my fave skincare youtuber is lab muffin beauty who’s a chemistry PhD).
however, the worst thing that sealed the deal of my distaste is the rabid fanbase that takes his word as gospel, comments on all skincare videos or tiktoks @ing him or asking him to react (therefore devaluing the opinions of whoever is posting in detriment to his...) and being generally really insufferable. there’s also a bit of that “white man in a women-dominated industry gaining disproportionate success over female creators” phenomenon going on that’s so rampant in the beauty community, but i won’t go into that because that’s hardly his fault.
tl;dr: i don’t vibe with him, but more importantly i wouldn’t consider him a reliable source of information on skincare.

Watch "I Was a Humanitarian... and I Regret It" on YouTube
youtube
I haven't watched the whole video yet, but he's making some good points about white saviorism (or just Western saviorism tbh), and disrespect to impoverished people of color. I know that he was raised Mormon so I wonder if it was Christian mission trips that he went on. Up until a little while ago I dreamt of going on mission trips with a Presbyterian Church, but I learned that most mission trips just cause more issues and humiliate the people in need without giving them lasting help. I'm looking for better ways to help out now.
