the naruto vs neji fight makes me laugh because:

naruto frames his win as a victory for "hard work" (as opposed to inborn talent) even though the only reason he turned the battle in his favour was due to his innate potent chakra reserves. neji may be a genius, but he also learned and mastered the hyuuga main house techniques through his own labour. neji is a closer representation of hard work than naruto will ever be (especially when it comes to this fight).

naruto goes "haven't you considered HINATA is suffering too" after hearing about how neji's dad died for the main house

realized how fucked up it was that neji refers to hinata with the suffix "sama." the only others who receive that level of deference are the kages and the sannin.

naruto seems more outraged at neji for reacting negatively to what’s been done to him and his father than hiashi or the hyuuga clan in general (because he, too, is an orphan boy and he alone gets to dictate how every other orphan in the series behaves, apparently)

naruto immediately shelves the issue of the hyuuga clan to be revised after he rises to the position of hokage.

naruto says to neji "you can change your destiny." myself and presumably all audience members assumed that meant neji would not die for a main house member exactly like his dad did.

and watching this fight for the first time i thought "great we'll get development on all these fronts for naruto and neji and the hyuuga plotline later on" and isn't that just hilarious

ik there was a very slim chance of toei actually making sakimai a thing and this is a silly thing to be sad over but... saki and mai had the whole "our meeting was destiny" trope only for them to get paired off with random ass men. and in saki's case it wasn't even kenta, the boy she actually had chemistry with in splash star but some random man we never even see.

Hm so thinking about the Sasuke Retrieval arc, while I don't like it to begin with (aside from the really cool fights) I think instead of Naruto, Kiba, Chouji, Neji, and Shikamaru, I would've had Kiba be replaced by Tenten. I also would've had Chouji die following his fight.

Storm

A storm was approaching, and, even with the power Itachi had accumulated, there was nothing he could do to stop it. Not even legends could stop a force of nature. Dark grey clouds lingered on the horizon, ivory captivated by ebony, a young Hyuuga leaning in as if helpless against Shisui's magnetic pull. The sparks between them were static in the atmosphere, causing fine hairs to stand on end and a sensitivity to even a gentle exhale of air in their close proximity. The pressure was dropping, butterflies were taking flight in the newest Anbu's stomach, coloring his face softly.

It was only a matter of time.

The Anbu's secret Hyuuga, the clan's prodigy, Neji, would inevitably fall for Shisui. He was powerless in the face of such irresistible charm. Shisui's lips would ignite more than just his heart, and the coming winds would rip up previously indestructible foundations.

Shisui's priorities would experience a world-quaking shift to his latest tragedy, a caged bird. Shisui already spent too much of his time talking about him and his unsettling passivity about the injustices of his past. He wanted him to fight. No...He wanted to fight for him. He would direct those chaotic winds into a deadly spiral.

And Itachi would be at the center of the devastation.

Itachi wanted the storm to blow off course, away from Konoha, where peace had been so carefully orchestrated by him and Shisui in their childhood. He wanted it to calm, to dissipate, to die against the shelter of the relationship he had built with Shisui over the years. He wanted to feel safe in their love...

Standing in the doorway of the Anbu locker room, though, watching as Shisui gave Neji's low-hanging ponytail a playful toss then ghosted his fingertips over his lower back, Itachi knew his shelter would soon collapse around him.

There was a storm approaching, and he had no choice but to watch it destroy everything he had worked so hard for, everything he had ever held dear.

Expanding on the Obito-is-smart-actually-he's-just-stupid-around-Kakashi AU from here, because it haunts me and I have many thoughts about it. (Note: while most of that can be interpreted as headcanon, and is an explanation of canon events, this post goes into an actual AU version, where canon events aren't followed, because I am gay and sad and cannot take it anymore.)

Normal Obito has an Actual Plan of things he wants to do when he becomes Hokage, including making sure no one clan can be discriminated against in law, building trade relations with other shinobi nations to create actual lasting alliances not built on war (like Kakashi post-canon lol), and actually doing something about the Hyuuga hierarchy stuff, with the help of Hiashi and Hizashi, who he's already created a sort-of-alliance with.

Obito-around-Kakashi is completely unable to articulate this, and instead ends up blurting out things like "fancy hat" and "people will like me," and looking like an indecisive fool who doesn't know what he's doing. Everyone who's interacted with Obito outside of Kakashi believes he can do it, and would do a good job. Unfortunately, Obito spends A Lot of time around Kakashi, including interacting with Most People, so the number who believe he'd make a good Hokage is... distressingly small.

One would think that, given he was able to function and activate a two-tomoe sharingan when Kakashi wasn't looking, he would be able to dodge the boulder fine while Kakashi was knocked out. Unfortunately, he'd just grabbed Kakashi to throw him out of the way, and without Protecting Kakashi being a direct motivator, holding Kakashi in his arms, even just to throw him out of the way, is enough to make Obito's brain stall completely for long enough to get canon'd.

Rin survives becoming a jinchuuriki because Obito trips and crashes wildly into the clearing when he sees Kakashi, and incidentally he ends up crashing into Rin just before she can jump in front of chidori. Unfortunately, Kakashi sees Obito and gets distracted long enough for an enemy to land a blow, and Obito, intelligence fully impaired by proximity to Kakashi, thinks Kakashi is dead. Mangekyo-activation and nigh-instantaneous death of every enemy shinobi in the vicinity ensues. And then Rin heals Kakashi. Because he's Not Dead.

The combination of passed-out Kakashi and Must-Protect-Precious-People allows Obito to tell Rin that Kushina's a jinchuuriki too (he got suspicious bc of the floating hair, and Kushina humored him when he asked), and her and Minato should be able to do something about the seal of the Sanbi. Needless to say, she's rather happy to stay alive and not have to horrifically traumatize one of her precious people.
