Equiliberty Transphobia and Censorship - Jocelyn and company react to my departure

Thrilling followup of Jocelyn/Moe/Crownhill EC/cathcc/cath-creative-corner/bambisimmer responding to the farewell message I had to post as a screenshot because she blocked the word 'transphobe' from the server to keep people from talking about her revolting behavior and bigotry.

Red mark-out indicates her complicit (at BEST) mods - people who are morally okay with working along someone who believes pronouns are "political", loudly argues that there are only two genders, misgenders people (even calling one trans person it), comes onto posts about respectfully playing Native American characters complaining about cultural sensitivity, and more!

You'll notice Jocelyn's typical victim complex behavior here and emotional immaturity - she is being attacked, she is being bullied, not the transgender people she's treating like dogshit.

Jocelyn, I want you to know that there's not a damn thing that's going to deliver you from the community's wrath on this one.

There's nowhere you can run to get away from your choices. You can change your url or the name of the server or delete channels over and over again as many times as you want, but this community has a long-ass memory. Make a new account! Change your username again! We're going to find you. There are eyes on you in that server. There are eyes on you frankly most places you post. I want you to know it's not safe to vomit up your hateful "opinions" anywhere on god's green earth without it ending up in another public post, and honestly, you're going to be exceptionally lucky if youtube's simmers don't pick up on this one for views from the controversy. You had an okayish rep as a creator back in TS3's equine community and you, nobody but you, threw that all away why? To hurt other people who did nothing to you.

Most of us are LGBT+ in some way and those who aren't are almost always allies, not fellow bigots.

Without further ado! Here's my post in the 2 minutes before Jocelyn deleted it (after saying to me specifically 10-15mins prior she was going to stop deleting posts she just didn't agree with).

You're immature, incapable of leadership at 30something years old, desperately clinging to a failing server which you imploded with YOUR OWN hateful diatribes against people who did NOTHING to you, trying to jealously hoard members and talking about "poaching". You had to create an entire server because you were not welcome elsewhere simply because of your personality before you even started spewing hate speech!!!! Honestly when I joined the discord I kind of anticipated a fall of Rome scenario given who was at the helm, just tried to not interact with her, etc, but nah man. Nah.

Energy in DmC: Devil May Cry

So I previously made a post about weapons in DmC (and it was supposed to include a section about energy) but… I accidentally posted before it was finished?

So, I don’t use tumblr very much (I had it uninstalled for a while), and I don’t know very well how to navigate it. Anyway, I wanted to talk about the weapons and energy because I feel like they are overlooked a lot even within the reboot fandom.

I was gonna type a huge thing out in the DmC Brotherhood Server, but I figured I wanted something that could be “linked” so I could use it in different occasions/ chats. So I redownloaded tumblr to make that

I typed as far as I got in the last post then accidentally hit “post” and immediately tried to delete the posting process and bring it up as a draft. But, I’d thought I’d lost it? So I just gave up, uninstalled tumblr, and went off in the discord.

Then, a couple days later, someone was like “hey did you write that post on tumblr?”

And I was like “bro, that posted??”

Anyway, thanks to everyone who read that. Here is the second part before I inevitably delete tumblr again and disappear into the void.

(I don’t know how to like the comments, but I appreciated the nice comments.)

So, the way energy works in DmC: Devil May Cry is… somewhat akin to Bleach (the anime/ manga) but obviously there are significant differences. Not to mention the hollows, which are based on the same poem as Bleach’s were, apparently.

One could also easily see comparisons into that of the Metaverse from Persona 5 (Palaces and distorted desires/ perceptions)

A lot of people don’t really… understand how “energy” or “power” works in DmC. Especially in regards to Lilith and her death. (That entire scene is consistently misinterpreted and misrepresented to begin with, but we should stay focused.)

There is the human world. And then there is an angel realm and a demon realm. The angel and demon realm seem to be at some kind of consistent war. I’m not entirely sure how that works? Their planes may be on a more even level with that of the human realm. So humans aren’t really perceptive of the angelic/ demon realm, but the angels and demons can perceive and interact with eachother. (Perhaps they in spirit are very akin to eachother, somewhat like how Nero and Mundus in the original series are almost angelic in nature. That might explain more how Angelic and Demonic weapons work in limbo.)

If there were ever a sequel to DmC, I’d hope they could shed some more light on the angels perspective and world.

So- humanity cannot directly interact with the demons, but a sort of “in between” plane of existence has been discovered by Mundus and the demons (Limbo), and they use this to extract humanities power through indirect means. This being through propaganda, poisoned Mountain Dew, and directly possessing the humans.

Vergil describes “demon collaborators” or seemingly humans working alongside demon kind consentingly or not so much. We see them in the opening cutscene, pointing at Dante, as he tries to ignore them. But, they are actively dragging him into limbo and calling demonic attention to him. They also appear when Dante and Vergil are discussing the “Nephilim.”

So, the demons cannot really directly do anything to humanity, but from limbo, they can have underlying manipulation and control.

The especially powerful demons can take “human bodies” that can have a real presence in the human world and have more of a foot in humanities door. But, this comes at a great price. We see three powerful demons do this. Bob Barbas, Lilith, and Mundus.

In DmC, the demons have a sort of “atmospherics energy that plays into their designs and powers. The respective demon will be stronger so long as they are in their “palace” though they are still susceptible to death so long as their “human body” is killed.

Bob Barbas

Bob Barbas controls the “digital media.” He has a direct link to the many cameras scattered throughout the city, he loosely reigns over the city’s prison system, and his human form has a political and social death grip on humanity.

This is expressed in the art direction, in that Bob is a floating digital whirlpool of screens that shoots lasers at you. He doesn’t fight you directly. He conceals his human body, and fights you as a digital image. With the “eye” or that which monitors the people, being his weakness. And when you traverse into his “eye” you physically go into live news footage. He’s digital, indirect, and he’s hiding his weakness from you. Not to mention, he’s in a surveillance tower. But with a couple bullets to his “human body” he’s easily disposed of.

Digital media and surveillance is Bobs “domain”

Lilith

Lilith’s big thing in this plot is that she is intentionally written as one of Mundus’ “whores.” Which may seem cruel, but the point is that Mundus doesn’t care about her (in contrast to how Dante values Kat- and Vergil more values what Kat offers. Foreshadowing that Vergil shares certain traits with Mundus that are destructive.)

Anyway, the demon king values Lilith’s “service” through their child more than her. So, you fight the spawn instead of her directly.

Lilith’s speciality aside from being the spawns mother, is clubbing and narcotics. She, akin to the succubus, uses substances to control humanity, primarily various drugs of sorts that she encourages humans to consume at her club. And her Club is her “palace” where reality is blurred the most, humans are most susceptible, and she is the most powerful/ safe.

The club twists and contorts to her will, but she is a coward, who primarily is valued (and seems to value most herself) by Mundus’ spawn. So, she hides herself… within her monstrous child. A reverse narrative on birth, and a mother’s protection. Lilith is vile and would rather put her child on the front lines to protect herself.

Anyway, so Dante can slap Lilith around mid fight. And I think that’s more of a “gameplay” quirk than anything. One of those things that can happen while the player is operating Dante, rather than being explicitly canon that Dante hits her 50 times with a demonic axe (in her human form) and she’s fine.

When Lilith, canonically, is brought away from her domain, the club, she is immensely weakened. And her body can be destroyed just like a normal humans. (It could in limbo as well, she just now doesn’t have the atmospheric power to protect herself) This is why Vergil can shoot her and kill her. She both made the decision to utilize a human body to begin with, and stepped away from her domain as a hostage.

Mundus

Then there is Mundus. We know that he is a lot like Bob and Lilith where if he steps away from the hell gate, he’s in danger. That serves as the source of his power, but overall, his domain is the city. One can be killed in their domain (ex- Bob) but it’s their body that needs to be killed and it’s more conveniently concealed in Limbo.

Despite the hell gate providing an extra layer of protection, the city overall is still his. And a large part of Limbos collective “hive mind” system comes back to him. He’s just always being particularly protective of his human body with the hellgate, though he’s arguably still unfathomably strong away from it- just more susceptible because of his human body.

The city being his domain is seen in that the final fight takes place on top of numerous sky scrapers, as buildings and people are being sucked into Mundus, almost like a vortex. The hellgates destruction serves to throw the balance of the planes out of wack. And Mundus’ city wide power utilizes that to his advantage, building an enormous shield of power with everything that surrounds him.

But, his human body is still just as susceptible as ever. And that’s how he’s killed.

Limbo and Nephilim

I meantioned Limbo being a hive mind, because it is. That’s why it can taunt Dante, and why even small demons can pull Dante in. It’s like a big spiritual consciousness that demons have respective control of depending on their power.

Mundus - the city

But, Nephilim can traverse these planes. Go in and out, and their “human” body is an appearance. They hold the same amount of susceptibility no matter where they are. And that’s very little to begin with, having regenerative powers and just being incredibly powerful overall.

So, Dante’s devil trigger is also a utilization of this. He is quite literally using the same kind of “spacial control” that the three demons use, but he can transport it anywhere. It’s more innate, as a traveler of worlds.

When he wishes, he can expend great force, creating a swirling whirlwind, obliterating gravity, and slowing time. He is bending energy to his will, but, it’s not tied to any respective place. It’s just something he carries with him at all times. DT is just taking full control of the spacial energy around Dante.

Vergil is a bit more… odd? He doesn’t utilize his spiritual energy the same way, he creates a doppleganger. Which is decently representative of the fact that he is “two faced” and doesn’t really have full comfort in himself. He’s all about “ideals” so it would make sense that his use of this energy is to “separate” himself in two. And how big of a plot point the hollows (or other selves) are to him. Not to mention my last point (in the weapons post) of Yamato being a “separator”

A really cool detail I noticed is that when the Nephilim fight in the final mission, it takes place over the whole city. There is an entire view of what the Nephilim fight to achieve. Vergil wants control of humanity, Dante wants absolute freedom. And so their fight is on high ground overlooking the very thing they are fighting over and have created.

Throughout this fight, the sun shines a bright red. But is slowly engulfed by dark, blue storm clouds, the more they fight. And when Vergil unleashes his true power, the ground is struck everywhere by blue lightning, and the red sun is nearly overwhelmed. The lightning storm also appears when Vergil fights his hollow self. Reboot Vergil is quite literally the storm that is approaching.

This is both excellent visual representation (per usual) on Ninja Theories part, but also quite literally the sheer atmospheric power of the Nephilim. When they fight, the world quakes and the weather bends to their wills. It’s so cool.

First fic: A Little Dramatic - a Hot Fuzz fic which I stopped writing after one chapter. Accidentally abandoning WIPs is a running theme for me.

Last fic: Are You There, God? It's Me, Aziraphale - my Good Omens Season 2 Fix-It fic. I have a part-written companion fic from Crowley's perspective languishing in my google docs. Will I finish it? Who knows (probably not).

Only once: Honestly, most of them. I only have 11 fics published on AO3 and 6 of them are a one-time-only fandom post. It's not that I go through hyperfixations/fandoms quickly; it's more that I can seeminly only write if I'm properly ~inspired~. If I can't write the thing in one or two sittings, it's not getting finished. Don't blame it on the good times, blame it on the boogie ADHD.

Favorite fic from the fandom I've written in most: Urgh. OK. So, I have 3 Stardew Valley fics and, I'm not going to lie to you all, they fucking suck. That's not even me being performatively humble - they are Not Good. So, I'm not really proud of any of them. I'm keeping them up because I don't really like deleting things, and I haven't orphaned them because I believe in standing by my mistakes. But yahh boo we hate you.

Fic I wish more people read: check my spelling, wring my neck - my Alone Rangers fic. The potential readerbase for this is incredibly niche to the point that I am genuinely surprised it has just over 100 hits - I honestly believed it was going to tap out at 20. I mainly wrote it for my friends on discord but I think it's quite good and I'm rather proud of a couple of the jokes in it.

Fic I agonized over: you pulled me into focus - as yet unfinished but NOT ABANDONED Ghosts Patcap AU WIP. I continue to agonise over it because it is unfinished and I want it to be finished. I have the final three (ish?) chapters planned out and part-written. The engine is revving but the handbrake is on. Someone please help me.

Fic that sprang fully formed: 'cause you're in my brain, taking up space - Viago/Anton WWDITS fic. The only not-one-shot that I've ever finished. Sure, it's only 2 chapters but that's not the point. The point is that it whizzed out of my brain over 4 days with very little straining involved.

Work(s) I'm proud of: Are You There, God? It's Me, Aziraphale - I'm more proud of this than anything else. I'm not sure why. I just think it reads well. I think I did an alright job in trying to emulate the narrative style of Good Omens.

This is super long, I apologise! I've decided to use this platform to talk about this, even though I haven't really used it in 6 years, because I feel like tumblr is the first place I was introduced to witchcraft social media on. And also, my only other media besides discord is personal and not witchcraft-related. Introduction I'm Tea, and I am a green and folk witch who has lived in and practiced the folk magic of America, Scotland, and Ireland. I have been practicing witchcraft for about 10 years (I am 25, despite what my bio says). I also am a moderator of a large online witchcraft discord, and that is what most of my answers here will be based on. I will also include here that I am a PhD candidate in plant sciences, close to finishing - I think this is relevant because a lot of my expertise and access to research (even like, JSTOR articles on witchcraft) is enabled and encouraged by my entrenchment in academia.

Topic 1 I share my practice online for community. I thankfully now live in a place where the in-person witchcraft community is pretty great, but I lived in small cities and areas where most witchcraft discussions centered around Wicca (which I have never been interested in as a path for myself). I started sharing here first on an account that was accidentally deleted in 2017 but I moved to discord a couple of years ago and really found (and then started another) community there. I have never wanted to teach but rather just wanted a serious space where I could discuss what books I was reading mainly. I think community is great at introducing me/you to new things and furthering my/your craft, and that is what I hope to accomplish by sharing my own craft. I think social media has impacted the community in a lot of ways, both good and bad. I honestly think it depends on the space in which the community operates - I will not pretend the discord I mod is perfect, but I also think a lot of other witchcraft discords I have been in can run a little rampant in misinformation found on witchtok, tumblr, etc.. I'm sure we have some too, because it's super hard to weed out when crafts are so personal. I think one of the biggest things is the spread of misinformation seems to have exploded with the explosion of short form content. There is just no nuance in any short form content, witchcraft or no. And with UPG this gets even more complicated. The only way I find I am able to combat misinformation anywhere is to not accept anything I see as fact, until I have either tried it for myself, or if it is verifiable from other sources (which a lot of my practice is - if I find folklore repeated in many books which are well sourced, I take that as good info). But I definitely struggle with knowing when someone is speaking in UPG terms or in folkloric terms especially when it comes to deities. For content creators, I do really think it is important to distinguish what is UPG and what may not be.

I also think there is an issue with people exaggerating experiences that they've had to get views / attention / whatever, and that can lead a lot of people who are beginning and can't recognize exaggerations feeling inadequate. I think with experience people begin to realise that certain claims are ridiculous, and it no longer bothers them (it no longer bothers me), but that can be a hard lesson learned. Social media allows people to compare themselves to others and can lead to overconsumption, which I won't say a ton about because I feel like this is covered a lot. I think witchcraft requires a degree of skepticism, and it may take a while for newer witches (and even some who have been practicing a while) to develop the skills needed in sorting out good information from bad information. But! There are also a lot of communities which dispel misinformation, exaggerated claims, and the like. Thankfully, I feel like these communities which are 'serious' witchcraft communities are starting to be a little more well-regarded than the areas which aren't as discerning. With discussions like these, and big creators talking about it, I think more and more awareness will spread and will prevent people from taking advantage.

And social media introduces a lot more people to the space, to know that it's even a thing that they may be able to approach. I found witchcraft here, when someone posted an aesthetic graphic of the Green Witch by Murphy-Hiscock that made it's way onto my feed. I read it, and resonated with what I read. My craft has developed since then, and I may have found witchcraft some other way eventually, but there really is this amazing reach that has helped so many people find what path was for them. I think defining witch vs new ager vs pagan is a whole other issue (one for another time) but honestly, how am I affected by you calling yourself a witch if you don't fit into my definition? I'm not. I think that will be another challenge for the community in the coming years - accepting that your definitions and practice do not rule other people's. But I digress.

In terms of consumption of media replacing practice, I definitely think it can. It's not something I personally struggle with, as I cast spells when I need to and don't consume a huge amount of witchcraft content outside of discord, but I definitely did when I was younger and living with parents who weren't witches. I mean, we have the term 'armchair witchcraft' for a reason - it definitely exists. I said earlier I had been practicing for about ten years, and when I typed it I knew I would address here that I have been practicing seriously for about six or seven. Moving into my own space allowed me to start practicing the way I wanted to. I still consume a lot of content in the way of books, but as time has passed my reading preferences are less spellbooks and more historical accounts.

Topic 2 I am not an influencer but what I share on discord is minimal (I don't share spirit workings besides showing herbs, deity workings, and many of my spells) but it is authentic. I don't really have the resources to post anything that isn't authentic if I am including a picture. I am more liable to post recipes with plant correspondences connected, or a list of folklore associated with a particular plant I am working on. If I do share a picture, I may include a list of spell components, but I never share what I did with them if that makes sense (like only sharing the ingredients of a recipe but not cooking instructions). Everything else feels too private to me.

I'm only affected by censorship by having things of certain topics like domination magic, blood magic, etc., behind an 18+ wall on the server. This is done because adults who are posting that info don't want to be sharing it with minors, which is the correct take! People will find things online anyway, but that doesn't mean it has to be through us.

I've definitely seen grifters in the community. Mainly here or spamming DMs on discord or instagram. I don't think this is a spicy take, but anyone trying to sell you something that isn't tangible (like selling a spirit) seems too risky to me, and not to mention unethical. If you get something direct in response, like a tarot reading, fine. But I personally wouldn't risk sending someone money to do a spell for me (again, unless it's tangible like a witch ladder or a knot magic hat or an oil or something). I think we talk about scammers so much in the community now though, that it's not something I really need to discuss because everyone knows about it.

I discussed misinfo in the topic above, and the only way I can think of to combat it is to talk about how it is rampant, and tell people to double and triple check their sources. Educating yourself isn't easy. Watching a tiktok or even a youtube video is not going to give you all the information. People will have to get comfortable doing research and then actually doing the witchcraft themselves 🤷🏼‍♀️. Also like I said, clearly stating UPG is important.

This has been said on every one of the videos discussing this I've watched: definitely having a large following automatically makes people think you're an expert. I've noticed this even on my relatively-small discord: being a mod in a position of power makes people believe you are all knowing. We try to staff based on activity and level-headedness and chemistry, so a lot of our staff are beginners. The rest of us who aren't beginners make it very clear what we're experts in and what we're not. Again, I think this goes back to doing my/your own research rather than maybe expecting to be spoonfed information.

Topic 3 I can get inspiration from content creators or other discord members, definitely. But I tend to take that and do my research and figure out how to do it in a way that works for me. I don't really get FOMO, but I feel like that is a product of knowing myself and knowing my craft and having lived in it for a while.

Rather than feeling FOMO, I feel like oftentimes I can feel quite burnt out. It's not a product of comparing myself to others necessarily, but especially with the moderating of the server. I don't know how content creators do it. I am a firm believer in going through seasons in your craft, and I think that can be so hard to do when you operate in a space where a lot of your community (or your job) revolves around one thing.

I don't know what my craft would look like without social media, to be honest.

Topic 4 I definitely think online communities are as valid as in-person communities. I am extremely grateful for the friends I have made on discord and online - they have pushed me and my craft to grow in a way it never would've without them by asking questions, recommending books, and sharing their own ideas.

I personally haven't been affected by people capitalising off of witchcraft, nor do I know anyone who has been. I definitely think some things should be paywalled so creators can get their due, but also almost all of the information you want to find you can find for free. It's whether you want to hunt to find that information, and whether you trust the sources that information may come from. I think the only way to ensure a course/etc is valid is to have info on who's running it. Who is teaching? What are they teaching? how long have they been practicing what they're teaching? Do they have a good bibliography / resource list for further reading? What are their accreditations? These are all questions we need to ask before we purchase something like that. Conclusions I feel like communities are always going to have issues, bad eggs, tension, all of that. There's no way to prevent it. I think the witchcraft community needs more honesty (not rudeness - honesty) about what they're doing and why, and I think it's important for people to know why they do things in their practice and why they work (the example I always use is, why do we stir tea clockwise to 'bring an intention'? It's an adaptation of movement in a circle thrice from British Traditional Witchcraft, but a lot of tiktoks don't share this when talking about the method). This will help prevent misinformation from spreading and can give context to posts. I also think people need to understand that some people's crafts will look strange to you. You may not call what they do witchcraft, but they do, and like I mentioned before, we all need to just accept that that's the way it is. This will be easier when people stop inflating their experiences (if they ever do), but for right now I think making your own experiences known to whatever extent you want is important. Even I can step up and say I did not have a deity choose me from birth, nor have my deities or spirits ever acted in a romantic, sexual, parental, or even best friend-type of way toward me. My relationships with my spirits has always been friendly and professional, but if they were not working with me, they would find another witch. I am not the Chosen One. Other people may have had these experiences, but that's not my experience, and that doesn't make me less of a witch.

Having this conversation about social media and its impact on the community is important, and I think just having this conversation by itself will make a big change.

I would like to share some general statistical data so far (the one that doesn't have an impact on the overall results) and address some feedback that I've received. Some graphs

I'm very happy to see that tumblr users have been the most active! You guys rock! Reddit has also been really active and I'm happy to see discord and twitter catching up!

I don't expect a lot of activity from dreamwidth as it's a different kind of website and I barely have any followers there but I'm curious to see how it goes. I ended up not posting anything on instagram because I would need to make images and I currently don't have the spoons for that :c

The age graph is also really cool! I'm very happy to see so many active 31+ people! Almost a quarter! And I'm very grateful to the young adults, who are the main bulk of the participants! I'm also happy to see teen participants express their votes as well c:

I posted the poll at 2 am my time (I had been working late nights on it the entire week because of real life responsibilities taking most of my free time) but decided to stick around for a bit to check if everything was going smoothly and to finish my conversations with friends on discord.

About 7 votes in, I decided to check on the poll and I saw this message in the feedback field:

This person was a life saver! Because although I know I added Rayllum originally, I must've accidentally deleted it and never noticed T-T it really is super easy to accidentally click on an X and delete a row from a multiple choice grid on google forms. Thanks to that person the crisis was averted. And it really would've been a crisis, because Rayllum is the flagship of TDP and getting lots of answers with no opinion on Rayllum would've really hurt the accuracy of the data.

I had also forgotten to add opinion options for some categories in the controversial ships section, which a friend as well as two poll takers notified me about!

Other Feedback

A few people mentioned that they weren't sure if it were ok not to tick every ship and I realized I hadn't been clear on that in my instructions. It is absolutely fine to skip whatever you feel like skipping. If there are ships you don't care about so much you don't even want to choose any option for - that is 100% valid and it tells me important information about the ship - you're not just neutral about it, you really do not care about a ship. And if I want to accurately evaluate our fandom's relationship with various ships, this information is also important.

People also commented that there have been too many ships to go through and that's definitely true. I tried to be as thorough as I could by including every possible ship people would have opinions on but the lists ended up being huge. I am planning to change a few things for the season 5 poll. I will probably exclude certain ships that won't do very well on this poll (unless the events in S5 warrant keeping them) and try to rearrange them in a way that can help people go through them faster.

There was a related comment where a person noted that it's not very convenient to scroll back and forth through the four opinion choices on mobile and suggested using just the numbers 1 to 4. That is a very good idea - I will implement this in the next poll.

One person was asking about Breakfast Guards being included in the canon ships. While I didn't get any official confirmations, they were shown almost kissing in the episode where Zubeia visits Katolis so I think that counts as them having some sort of onscreen not strictly platonic relationship.

While I explained the kinds of ships the poll was dealing with as well as the difference between active and passive shipping, I didn't actually explain what I mean by shipping, as one person rightfully pointed out! It's not an easy thing to define but I will try to come up with something for the season 5 poll! So far we can stick to romantic, queerplatonic or nonromantic sexual dynamics.

I used the wrong ship name for Rex Igneous x Avizandum. It should be Zanrex instead of Rexandum and the wonderful @cometchasr explained to why that particular shipname was chosen! He said that Zan was a nickname for Avizandum used a in few fics featuring the former dragon king and it fit very well with how the nickname Zym works. When I don't know a shipname I often just make one up on the spot as a placeholder but I am always happy to hear feedback from actual shippers and I switch to their preferred shipname.

I got so many nice compliments and words of encouragement too! Thank you guys! It means a lot ;__;

I will try to address feedback roughly once a week and keep you all updated on how things are going!

I've got over 35,000 words, spread across several documents, including published fics and WIPs, various drafts and completed scenes, but not including the drafts and scenes handwritten in a notebook. I do like to outline or full-out write my fics in a notebook.

Aaaaa, so manyyy! Wow! Okay, so I want to write a series of one-shots depicting scenes from Bartlet history (college, Kennedy-style wedding, or that time Jed accidentally ran over their next-door neigbors). There's another short, winter/holiday fic that I just might end up finishing before the New Years and a 5+1 things fic I've talked about on discord. (I have no self-control). I've also been working on my "What Was Abbey Bartlet Doing" fic which is basically a collection of standalone post-eps, so I'm going to continue working on that one as well.

Looking for a beta reader for:

Title: If We Never Make It Back to California: I Want You to Know I Love You (First of a series, unfinished)

Fandoms: Gravity Falls, Invader Zim, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (The second part involves The Owl House but the second part isn't public yet)

Other info: Before you ask, I don't have Discord.

Rated M, because I curse so frequently and there's some pretty involved angst and violence, but sexual material is kept to the absolute minimum because I'm NOT very comfortable with sexual content involving characters that are minors in canon. There's also very in-depth discussions of eating disorders, gender dysphoria, and slef-harm. Warnings include Graphic Depictions of Violence and Major Character Death.

The fic is intended for those who have seen Invader Zim in its entirety, and know important context from lost/deleted episodes. ETF and the comics, however, aren't really brought up in the fic. It will likely be confusing to those unfamiliar with Gravity Falls. You could possibly read and understand it if you haven't read JtHM or it's spinoffs, but it probably would hit a little harder if you're at least somewhat familiar with JtHM, Squee, and I Feel Sick. Lots of references to other cartoons.

Genrewise, I'd consider it a mix of just straight up fluff with angst. It has an underlying murder-without-much-mystery plot but it takes a backseat to some mundane, everyday things at times. It's a future-fic that I try to make somewhat trope-aware. It has a crossover ship (Dipper Pines x Dib Membrane) that very much started for Crack Purposes but at this point I'm extremely invested.

Summary (directly from AO3): "Featuring my horrid music taste, eighteen-year-old Dib Membrane drives across states to visit West Virginia, home of his future college. Professor Membrane doesn't approve, and complications arise after his mysterious and conveniently-timed death. But there's always a pair of paranormally-disadvantaged twins across the country for Dib to rely on. They always have their own problems, though, and the involvement of some of Dib's interesting extended family isn't helping his relationship with Dipper Pines- or maybe her relationship? Not even Dib knows. Either way, there are many possibly murderous road trips to be had, body insecurities to be unsuccessfully avoided, the occasional romantic drama for shits-and-giggles, and a coffee-shop side plot here and there.TL;DR: Dib and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Summer"

Common problems you may find: This is my first big fic and I'm not an experienced or "good" writer. I try to keep my spelling and grammar intact, though. I get ranty and occasionally stray out of character, though I try hard to keep it in character, because then what's the point of fanfic? I use crutch words like "smiled" and "sighed" a lot and I feel I may have pacing issues. I'm asking for a beta because I have no idea where these issues actually are, if I use them too much in certain parts, etc. I'm a panster and I tend to DUMP text on the page, accounting for the hefty word count I may need help knowing how to combine scenes or plot points. I also generally like knowing when I've accidentally done something rude, had a plot hole, or made a stupid/juvenile mistake. I also need new chapter names because I started the fic a long time ago, and chose exclusively lyrics from really cringey songs and haven't bothered changing just about anything. Plus I need to get some good foreshadowing in for part two.

Word Count/Update Info: Word count is 104,965 on AO3 but I will send you the link to my Google Doc, where it has the ongoing word count. You will see part two on the doc, but I am only concerned with part one for the time being. I update at least once a month, but sometimes two or three times. The fic is VERY close to finished and my projected word count for part one is 110,000.

What I'll do in exchange: My pretty exhaustive list of fandoms (both past and present) is: BoJack Horseman , Creepypasta , Daria , Doki Doki Literature Club , Five Nights at Freddy's , Gorillaz , Gravity Falls , Happy Tree Friends , Helluva Boss , Homestuck , Invader Zim , Johnny the Homicidal Maniac , Moral Orel , My Little Pony , Percy Jackson/Related R Riordan Books (it's been a while though) , Phineas and Ferb , Saw (Movies) , South Park , Team Fortress Two , The Amazing World of Gumball , The Owl House , Undertale and Deltarune. The only things I'm not comfy with are pornography specifically of real life people, pedophilia, incest, or underage. But otherwise that's alright. My max word count is 150k but other than that I will beta read anything in those fandoms.

I wish I understood my Ao3 stats better.

CW: Discussions of mood disorders, emotional dis-regulation, Ao3 stats, low self esteem, proshipping community/dead dove community.

Making Room surpassed 17,000 hits, but have only 159 kudos, and 14 comment threads.

With it being proship/dead dove content, I really don't know what this means. If I had a low hit count as well as low kudos and comments, I think I'd be more easily able to accept that that's just the nature of this type of fiction.

Are this many people really opening the fic and reading THROUGH then choosing NOT to kudos or comment, or are they opening the fic and immediately closing it, despite the fact that its adequately tagged? (This may also come down to poor writing quality. Maybe they open it and go "nah". It's honestly hard to believe that that's happened approximately 16,700-ish times but hey... what do I know.)

I've been writing fanfiction since I was 12 years old. I am a bunch of years older than that now. It began as and remained a communal activity, first between me and my IRL friends (writing self-insert Iron Chef/Gundam Wing crack crossovers LOL) to eventually between myself and other people online (I never left the crack behind). It's always been more than just writing to me. A major part of this is the community and interacting.

It's hard not to internalize this, particularly when I do see many other dead dove/proship blogs being VERY interactive. It doesn't help that I struggle with emotional dis-regulation and an as-of-yet undiagnosed mood disoder (therapist says probably Borderline, but I definitely hit some bi-polar notes - a behavioral assessment is forthcoming, but probably won't have final results for another 9-12 months from now).

My first attempt at connecting with DD communities earlier this year was simply a disaster due to my poor mental health. Rampant, unchecked rejection sensitivity caused me to leave the spaces I'd worked up the courage to enter. And, in at least one case, I was invited into a discord space and then bullied. (This was not a fandom specific DD discord, but a general writing discord that welcomed DD writers.)

I'm not entitled to anything - not positive feedback, not interaction, not fans, kudos, comments, or hits. But my rational brain, the wisemind, so to speak, says there's got to be a functional reason for why the fic gets regular hits, but little interaction otherwise, and according to DBT and my therapists, it's probably NOT me personally. There has to be a reason why so few people who read the fic actually friended me on Tumblr.

The dis-regulated mind takes the wheel from there, and insists that I must be repulsive. I must be the exception to this proship rule, and I, among all other DD writers and proshippers, have profaned the art of fanfiction and am deserving of outcast status. The dis-regulated mind is SO dramatic. It's exhausting. These feelings take brain work and so much energy to combat, energy that I don't usually have, but the more I learn, the more aware I am.

This is also a new blog, and that might be the simplest explanation. I'd had an established blog of 12 years that was accidentally deleted under my non-DD fanfiction pseudonym. I'm still grieving that. My mainstream fiction and the interaction it's gotten, it's successes, back up the narrative that my DD content has just gone too far, or is in fact so poorly written that the scenario about opening the fic and immediately closing it must be true (aka the writing just sucks).

My fic was never promoted on a chapter-by-chapter basis for my fandoms DD blog. Other fics were, but mine was literally only promoted when I finished it. Other little things like this begin to build in my mind, and I begin to wonder if, in fact, I'm not JUST repulsive, but if I've gained some reputation for doing something wrong. What other reason is there for being left out of that DD promotional blog when I'm tagging things the EXACT same way as other authors being promoted? The dis-regulated mind ends up being the loudest voice in this echo chamber.

What's worse is that during my days of writing non-DD content, I still "got a reputation" that I don't appreciate. I commissioned art for my fic, and that helped with traffic, but I did it because I loved my story to fucking death and wanted to see certain things illustrated. I supported an artist halfway across the world to do this. Assholes in the fandom started to imply that my fic didn't deserve the traffic, and the commissioning was my attempt to get more traffic to the fic. It was a natural result of that, but not the original intention. How were me and all my 12 year old friends more mature and supportive than the whole ass adults I interact with on Tumblr? Anyway, this previous interaction doesn't help convince my brain that this isn't about being rejected.

No, I don't just write fanfiction for myself. I don't just write ANYTHING for myself. It starts out as an idea that I want to bring into the world, and that's a solo endeavor for the most part. But once I bake that pie and set it on the window sill, the hope is that my neighbors will come to share a piece. I hate the virtue signaling that is embedded in statements like, "Just write for yourself, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks." No, asshole, there's a whole communal-emotional element to this that I'm not going to starve myself of because it seems cooler than if you're not someone who craves interaction.

I'm just going to keep at it, and do my best not to seem too needy or too disinterested. If I pretend I don't like the cat, he will choose my lap to sit on, or some such nonsense.

Also proshipping seems to be under attack by Tumblr now, so maybe it isn't so wise to be too visible right now.

The overhead comms of the Ark crackle to life with static, at exactly midnight. A voice rings out - loud, enough to wake anyone up who's unfortunate enough to be asleep at this time.

"Attention, Denizens of the Ark," It starts, obviously just as tired as anyone just waking up would be as well. There's a brief pause before the voice continues, seemingly just rattling off a list of necessary points. "Recently a health app was added to your personal devices, as a way to assist in keeping track of your well-beings as you adjust to living here on the Ark. With the latest update, a function was added to keep track of your heart. Or rather - your emotions, rather than physical heart health."

If you choose to check your phone at this time, it becomes obvious the app that's being discussed. The icon is a simple red heart, with a planetary ring surrounding it, the backdrop being a dark blue. It's next to a few other essential apps the Ark had pre-downloaded on your phone. And it looks like it's just about to finish updating.

"We had hoped this would aid in sorting out any uncertain feelings or identifying them in ways where you can discuss them with professionals. However, there was an unexpected malfunction where the app is attempting to link with other devices. More specifically….it's linking your emotions to someone else's. We've figured out that it links to whoever is physically closest to you at the time of the update. It will unlink once you get far enough away from that person…but it will relink you to the next closest individual."

"A fix is being worked on, and it'll be pushed in another update as soon as possible. In the meantime…have fun. I guess."

The voice fades with another crackle of static, and the usual nighttime silence settles back over the Ark…just as the app finishes updating.

OVERVIEW

We hope you're all ready for our first server event - SYNODIC. In this event, your characters will find that they are swapping feelings and emotions with the people around them. These will be the most genuine things you feel in the moment, and cannot be hidden or lied about. This will have your character working on navigating this change with the character they've found themselves linked to.

If your characters go far enough away from each other, the apps will unlink and relink to another person. Whether this happens on purpose or is accidental, is up to you.

EVENT FAQ

Do I get to pick who my character links to?

Yes! You can pick who your character links to, and if they stay linked the whole event or if they choose to unlink, and relink to someone else. One thing to keep in mind is that if you keep characters linked together for the duration of the event, you'll be locked to only having threads with this person. The relinking feature was added so you can have multiple threads with multiple different characters!

Can we just delete the health app?

Unfortunately, no. It's been programmed into your devices as an essential app by the Pyxis Ark crew. Even hacking it, won't get it off your phone, but it may cause some unintended side effects…

Do we have to participate?

No, actually! All events in Pyxis Ark are completely optional. Thanks to interactions being done through Discord Threads in this server, event interactions can be kept to people who just want to interact in events. All we ask is that when doing an event thread, you have ( EVENT ) written somewhere in the thread title as we may reward people in the future for participation in events.

What about chatrooms?

A special instance of chatroom will be made in the groupchats category of the Discord server, and can be used as the global chatroom for event ongoings. The usual global chatrooms will remain as they are, for people who don't want to participate in events.

Any questions about the event can be directed to the questions channel in the Discord server, or the ask box on Tumblr!
