just realized i had a fully vegetarian day of eating without trying, which i’ve probably done before but this is the first time i feel like i actually got enough protein too without being like intentional about it. im pretty excited even though it wasn’t all vegan, one meal was and the other wouldve been easily veganize-able if i had vegan cheese. and like as someone who used to be such a picky eater i had a list of foods i’d have to introduce into my diet before being able to even THINK about eating vegan, it’s exciting to see i’ve done enough of that introduction that i can have a day of low-effort eating that’s unintentionally vegan-approaching. like i forget how limited my diet used to be until i actually examine what my current diet looks like and go whoa i wouldn’t have eaten like 2/3rd of this even just a year ago lol. and tbh i dont know if i ever intend on going fully vegan but my goal is to limit myself to maybe cooking with meat and/or dairy only once or twice a week, and the only animal product to keep a staple would be eggs (i want to have my own chickens.)
#unfortunately it’s too easy for me to fall into an orthorexic mindset and trigger unhealthy restriction and binging#and i know vegans say ‘veganism isnt a diet it’s a lifestyle’ but#it’s really not lmao it quite literally is about what you eat and ‘diet’ doesn’t mean ‘fad diet’ or ‘weight loss diet’#it’s just what you eat and unfortunately changing it drastically can b triggering#which is why for now i’m focused on slow#sustainable dietary changes#and an additive mindset of trying new vegan dishes#or introducing ingredients that ive been picky about that are vegan staples#rather than eliminating meat or dairy#maybe once i have a larger repertoire of vegan meals and find it easy enough to meet my protein needs#then i can start deliberately limiting my animal product intake#but also i think about i forget who on radblr has this stance but basically#the idea that veganism shouldnt be encouraged to women because so many of us already have iron deficiency and are more prone to it from#our periods and as women are also more likely to have histories of disordered eating#and are more prone than men to a feeling of individual moral responsibility and guilt#which i think is an interesting argument i do kind of agree and it’s why i dont feel the immediate pressure to go vegan even as some#of my vegan friends guilt me lol#like im sorry im gonna prioritize my health#but i do agree that ULTIMATELY a diet LOW in animal protein is most supportive of physical health even with the above considerations about#anemia and women’s protein needs on their periods#like yes those are good reasons to be critical of some of the popular high carb unsustainable vegan influencer diets#but a diet of mostly plant based protein sources with minimal animal based protein where iron absorptionis a concern is ultimately going to#be more supportive of ur general health than a diet high as high in red meat as the standard american diet#anyways those r my thoughts lol idk where i was going in these tags

icl if you’re excruciatingly tired & miserable all the time u need to do a check up on how ur eating. first of all check that you’re eating at all and by that i mean like proper food w protein and nutrients. i remember in 2020 i went from suicidal and unable to walk up the stairs to still vaguely suicidal but generally better about it and able to go on actual walks just because i started like. eating properly and cooking for myself.
like. okay first of all u need at least 5 portions fruit/veg a day we tell kids that but it’s so true. preferably diff portions but if u don’t wanna manage that u can just overdose on like oranges (vitamin c!!) or like idk carrots sweetcorn whatever. then u need protein, i don’t really eat meat so for me this is beans/lentils/chickpeas but i think a lot of meat counts too, like chicken.
carbs will fill you up and u can’t cut them out bc they give u slow release energy they’re meant to be a key part of ur diet but u also can’t rely solely on them, so many people just eat bread and pasta and rice and u need stuff that has nutrients with it too.
then stuff like specific vitamins can have the hugest impact, ages ago we thought my grandpa had dementia but it was literally a fucking b12 deficiency, b12 deficiency can happen so easily and it causes mental fog extreme tiredness/fatigue and depression. b12 is in stuff like red meat i believe and in lower quantities in stuff like eggs, if u don’t eat meat (i don’t rly) marmite is literally like a perfect source of it, just spread some on toast every day and ur set, think of it like meds. of course there are supplements for iron and omega 3 etc oh shit omega 3 is a really big one as well - i also started taking those near the end of 2020 and like i cannot exaggerate the difference, i was still depressed but like in a much more functional way - but u can also get these in ur diet if ur careful abt it bc supplements can be expensive. omega 3 obvi is in oily fish and i think in eggs, iron is in broccoli and probs other leafy veg and maybe some meat…..
anyway i’m putting this on my blog as a self own & a reminder cause i keep being weird abt this stuff at the moment. but food is so important. at the end of the day making sure ur eating is always better than not eating enough even if what ur eating isn’t nutritious, but if u want to feel at ur best then u just have to keep an eye on this stuff. ALSO. if none of this works then. u probably should go get that checked out mate

at the risk of sounding like a weirdo....i just saw your grocery store post and it looks like a lot of veggie items? are you vegetarian? i'm trying to be but i'm a bit lost when it comes to food (where i live it's very difficult to be anything other than a meat eater lol) so i'm wondering if you could maybe share some of your favorite staples that you consistently get. thank you so much!!
hi anon sorry it took so long for me to answer this! but yes I've been vegetarian for about 13 years now! you said not eating meat is difficult where you live, and I know that what brands are sold where is always different so I'm not sure if these particular things would necessarily be available to you, but in the scope of like. meat substitutes, morningstar and simple truth both make really good stuff, and tofurky is the only good vegetarian sandwich meat I've had lmao
I usually always have veggie burgers and fake chicken strips/nuggets in my house because you can literally just microwave them with little to no additional effort. there's also rlly good fake meat crumbles for things like tacos and such and rlly good veggie sausages
as for vegetarian foods that aren't a substitute for a meat thing tho - baked veggies are rlly good and easy to make! I like cauliflower and brussel sprouts most. you can just stick them in the oven on high heat in a baking pan w oil, salt, and pepper and you're pretty much set. smoothies are also a go to esp in the summer time. I eat a lot of sandwiches too lmao. if you like yogurt that's a rlly good source of protein! cheese is also a good source of protein and easy to add to things. eggs as well if you like those. veggies like spinach, collards, and kale are all rlly good for iron but I don't like most of them 😔
without meat your consistent meal staples are probably going to become potatoes, bread, rice, and pasta/noodles but I'd say potatoes and rice are definitely the most versatile! as for like. full meals my top five (in no particular order) are probably stir fry with tofu, tacos, baked potatoes w side vegetable and/or meat substitute, home made mac n cheese (I can post my recipe if you'd like 😌), and pasta with salad or some kind of roasted vegetable on the side. vegetarian soup is also p easy to make but I don't like most soups (sorry souptuals)
I know that if you're going out to eat a lot of places don't have very good veggie options esp if you live somewhere that doesn't have a lot of vegetarian/vegan people but there's a lot of really good vegetarian lebanese food and I've found that most thai and chinese restaurants will have at least a few good vegetarian things there. diners are also usually a good place to go out to eat if you need vegetarian stuff
it's going to take awhile to get used to and find the food that you like and works for your body esp if you usually eat meat All The Time but after awhile it won't even be something you think about anymore. I know a lot of people will sort of slowly ease into being fully vegetarian by cutting certain kinds of meat out every few weeks or months so that's also something to consider if you think that it would help!
I will also say that it's probably also a good idea to keep an eye on your iron and how your energy levels are. it's really easy to get an iron deficiency if you're vegetarian/vegan especially if you're also someone who gets their period. if it ends up happening it's usually fixable by just taking iron supplements but its an important thing to look out for so it can be handled appropriately if it becomes an issue!
anyway I hope that this was helpful to you and good luck! if anyone else has some suggestions feel free to reply w them I'm a pretty picky eater so the scope of foods I eat is already smaller lmao

IRENE
You’re not gonna believe this: I saw the meat lady at the grocery store again last night, and she was buying more raw meat. She was buying some other stuff this time too, like, normal groceries, but still a lot of meat. I didn’t want to bother her or make her feel bad or anything, but, I had to know. Why did she need that much meat?
She was in front of me in line, but luckily, I didn’t have much to buy. Just some chickpeas and coconut milk. I checked out as quickly as possible—the poor cashier looked like he got whiplash from how fast I swiped my card—and I ran out to the parking lot to meet her.
She had just finished loading her groceries into her car, but thankfully, she hadn’t left yet. She looked surprised when I ran up to her, but not afraid. She had this warm smile on her face, which eased my nerves, surprisingly. She asked if I needed anything.
[EMBARASSED] I probably should have introduced myself or said hello—that would have been the polite thing to do. All I said, though, was, “Why do you need that much meat?”
She didn’t get angry or upset. Somehow, she didn’t seem fazed at all. Maybe she had gotten the question before? That wouldn’t surprise me. She still had a small smile on her face when she answered, “It’s for my child.”
I was kind of surprised for some reason? I asked if she had multiple kids, and she said no, just the one.
“They’re on summer break,” she said, “and they start their junior year of high school next year. Isn’t that exciting? I remember being that age. Anyways, being a teenager and all, they’re growing a lot, so I have to make sure they’re well fed. Wouldn’t you want the best for your child?”
[STIFLED] I got kind of weirded out by that. I asked if they were getting fruits and vegetables, because those were all important, too. She said, “Well, protein is especially important for a growing teenager. Besides, they have special dietary needs.”
And there was that phrase again! “Special dietary needs!” I asked what exactly that meant, a, an iron deficiency, some sort of issue with their muscles. She looked at me with this—God, this almost tender look, as if she was my mother and I had just disappointed her.
She said, “I don’t want to speak for them. They get very embarrassed talking about it. I promise the meat won’t go to waste, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
[UNCOMFORTABLY] I apologized after that. She smiled wider, and said it was okay. Before I left, she gave me a mint from her bag. Even though I did nothing to deserve it but invade her and her kid’s privacy.
So, I guess that’s the end of the mystery of the meat lady? I still don’t know why she feeds her kid that much meat, but no way am I asking her again. Actually, after that experience, I kind of hope that’s the last time I see her.
[A PAUSE.]
IRENE
I should probably get ready. I just…I have a lot on my mind. Yeah.
[PHONE BEEP.]
[RECORDING ENDS.]
[ANOTHER PHONE BEEP.]
[INT. IRENE’S CAR AS SHE’S DRIVING.]
[SHE IS HEARD DRIVING IN THE BACKGROUND.]
IRENE
The landlord is sending a mold inspector to my house today. He said he’ll call me and let me know as soon as possible what he thinks the best course of action is. I might have to spend a night in a motel room or something, but honestly, it will be well worth it to finally be rid of that yellow mold.
Also, I stopped by the library last night to look for any evidence about the Lorelei thing, or, that entire coven that went missing. Sure enough, there were articles about it in the local paper while it was happening, but I’m surprised it didn’t make national news. It definitely happened—I could even find the missing persons reports online—but hardly anyone outside of town covered it, let alone anywhere outside of Washington.
Some online conspiracy forums have talked about it, but no one ever came to a solid conclusion as to what happened.
[A FORCED CHUCKLE.] Didn’t realize how close to home the whole situation hit until I started researching it.
[A PAUSE.]
IRENE
[SINCERE] I hope you didn’t get kidnapped, Rose—or, killed by some weird cult, or whatever. Though, for a while, can I be honest? That possibility actually kind of made me feel better.
[SADDER, MORE DISTANT] I mean, the alternative is that you chose to leave. For a while, I thought that if I could just pretend it wasn’t your fault, then that meant you kept your promise. [QUIETER] To not leave without telling me.
[A BEAT, THEN, A SHAKY BREATH.] I’ve thought about it since then, though, and I think you probably did choose to. That was what you wanted, right? You wanted the spontaneity, the excitement, the leap of faith, whatever. I wouldn’t be surprised if one night, you just decided you were tired of waiting, and left.
Doesn’t make it hurt any less, though. Knowing that we had plans to leave together, and you just decided it would be better to go without me. No warning, no big talk, not even a letter.
I’m not angry anymore, don’t worry. I’m so indecisive all the time, I probably would have dragged you down.
[STRAINED] Still.
[a long pause.]
IRENE
Why do I still tell stories to you like this is a conversation? [SHE SCOFFS.] You don’t care, you—
[SHE TAKES A SHAKY BREATH BEFORE ENDING THE RECORDING.]
[PHONE BEEP.]
[RECORDING ENDS.]
[ANOTHER PHONE BEEP.]
[INT. IRENE’S OFFICE.]
IRENE
I’m about to go on my lunch break. [SUSPICOUS] Haven’t heard from the mold inspector, which is odd.
Look, I just wanted to talk because…I’ve been thinking a lot. Especially after looking through the newspaper reports for the coven incident. I think—I think whatever’s happening, it’s the whole town. That’s gotta be it, right?
Okay, I know it’s absolutely wild. I’m not saying that this is like, one of those mysterious little towns with some big supernatural secret that the whole town is hiding.
[A BEAT.] But that’s basically what I’m saying. Why else wouldn’t this place show up on a map? And, also, why else would an entire group of people go missing without hardly any news coverage?
[RAMBLING] It’s like there’s some big thing—and I’m not sure if everyone in town knows about it, or just a select few—but it’s like some big secret that everyone just knows not to talk about. Only, maybe, people don’t actually know the secret? Because Phoebe, who should know everything because of her grandmother, still knows close to nil.
Maybe—okay, maybe it’s not a secret that the townsfolk are keeping, but like, the actual town is keeping this secret from not only its own citizens, but the world. It’s like, some big thing is happening and nobody actually knows what it is. They just know it’s there.
[A PAUSE.]
IRENE
I have no idea what the fuck that means or why I said that.
[THERE’S A KNOCK AT HER DOOR.]
CAROL
[MUFFLED] Irene?
IRENE
[SURPRISED] Mm—Yeah?
CAROL
Can I come in?
IRENE
Um, sure.
[THE DOOR OPENS. CAROL STEPS INSIDE THE OFFICE.]
IRENE
What’s up?
CAROL
[NOW CLEAR] I, uh… How are you doin’?
IRENE
[CAUTIOUSLY] I’m...fine? How about you?
CAROL
Ah, I’m alright—say, uh, not to infringe on your privacy or anything like that, but I wanted to ask you about somethin’.
IRENE
[SLOWLY] Go ahead.
CAROL
[WARILY] So, I was talkin’ to Aden the other day in the breakroom, and he mentioned to me that you’ve been having this...issue. Somethin’ about a huh...jeez, how did he put it, eldritch dirt abomination?
IRENE
[DREADFUL] Oh, god, did he tell you about the dirt thing—?
CAROL
[OVERLAPPING] I’m worried ‘bout you, Irene. Alright? There, I said it.
IRENE
[SHE SCOFFS.] What, is this an, an intervention? I’m fine.
CAROL
[CONCERNED] You’ve been acting strange since...well, ever since the day we met, I reckon. Er, no offense.
[A BEAT.] Still, first it was these recordings you do, talkin’ to someone who you say is never gonna listen. Now you’re trying to hunt down some sort of mystical forest monster that nobody else has ever seen.
IRENE
[DEFENSIVE] That’s not true. Alright, Dorothy Wood had a notebook—
CAROL
You mean the woman who used to run the bookstore? Bless her heart, but, nobody ever knew what she was doing in her private time. Not even her poor granddaughter.
IRENE
That’s what we’re trying to figure out.
CAROL
I just—I don’t want you to get involved with somethin’ you can’t turn back from. Alright? I, I don’t ever want to see you or Aden put yourselves in danger, and all this stuff you’ve been doin’ is just…
IRENE
[A BEAT.] Just what?
CAROL
Just, well, you know.
IRENE
[GROWING GRADUALLY MORE UPSET] No, I don’t. Say it. Do you think I’m being delusional? I know what I saw was real—
CAROL
[OVERLAPPING] I never said that, Irene. I just want to make sure you’re doing okay.
IRENE
I am. Okay? Everything’s just peachy. I’m doing my job just fine, aren’t I? That should be your primary concern, not whatever I do when I get home each night.
CAROL
[SHE SIGHS.] No, you’re right, you’re right. I’m sorry for bein’ so invasive.
IRENE
[A BEAT.] It’s alright.
CAROL
Just let me know if you ever need anything, alright? I care about you, not just as an employee.
IRENE
[STRAINED] Appreciate it.
[A PAUSE.]
CAROL
Say, you headin’ to lunch soon?
IRENE
Uh, yup, I was thinking about going out to grab something. Do you—?
[THERE’S FOOTSTEPS IN THE BACKGROUND AS ADEN WALKS BY.]
ADEN
[CUTTING HER OFF] Irene, have you downloaded it yet?
IRENE
[SHE GIVES AN OVEREXAGGERATED SIGH.] Not yet.
[MORE FOOTSTEPS AS HE WALKS IN.]
ADEN
Do you still not have enough storage?
IRENE
I have the space, I just have better things to do.
And I’m not a total caveman, you know. [UNDER HER BREATH] had Tumblr back in high school for a bit.
ADEN
[HE LAUGHS, OVERLAPPING.] Tumblr? Are you joking? You were a Tumblr kid?
IRENE
For like, three months! I was fifteen, dude, give me a break.
CAROL
[SHE CHUCKLES.] Anyways, I was just wondering if y’all wanted me to grab somethin’ for you while I’m out? I’ll take a list, if you want to start writing down your orders. I’ll probably go to the café nearby, if that’s alright with y’all.
ADEN
Oh, sure! That’d be great! Thank you! Irene, do you have some paper?
IRENE
Yup. Thanks, Carol!
CAROL
Not a problem.
[A PEN IS HEARD CLICKING, AND WRITING ON A PAD OF PAPER IS HEARD IN THE BACKGROUND.
ADEN
Actually, Irene, I was hoping to get to talk to you. Do you have any plans tonight? Because you still haven’t come over to my house yet, and I think it’s a crime I haven’t gotten to show you my collection of knitted cats yet.
IRENE
[TEASING] And I think it’s weird that you’re so passionate about showing off your collection of knitted cats.
ADEN
[DEFENSIVE] I worked really hard on them, okay?
IRENE
[SHE LAUGHS.] Mm, in all seriousness, maybe? I actually have a mold inspector over at my house today, and I might have to call him soon, because he still hasn’t...
[HER TONE BECOMES MORE SERIOUS.] …gotten back to me.
[A BRIEF, EERIE INSTRUMENTAL NOISE ECHOES IN THE BACKGROUND.]
IRENE
Why are you guys looking at me like that?
CAROL
[SHE CLEARS HER THROAT.] You said you had a mold inspector?
[CAROL’S VOICE SOUNDS CALM, BUT THERE IS A GROWING PANIC UNDERNEATH.]
IRENE
[SLOWLY] Yes. This mold started growing in my house when I first moved in, and it kept getting worse, so I hired someone to take care of it.
CAROL
[HER BREATH HITCHES.] And what exactly does this mold look like?
IRENE
Um…it’s yellow?
[CAROL TAKES IN A SHARP INTAKE OF BREATH.]
IRENE
[CONT.] Like, puss yellow? Kind of smells like rotten meat?
CAROL
Alright. Irene, what’s most important right now is that you stay calm.
ADEN
[MUTTERING TO HIMSELF] This can’t be happening, this can not actually be happening.
IRENE
Okay, what’s going on? What are you guys not telling me?
CAROL
Look, I need to go grab something, but after that, I think we need to go to your house right now.
IRENE
Wait, what—?
CAROL
[OVERLAPPING] This next part is very important: have you touched it at all? The slightest touch—
[CREEPY, TENSE MUSIC BEGINS BUILDING IN THE BACKGROUND.]
CAROL
[CONT.] —even just your pinky toe?
IRENE
[GROWING FRUSTRATED] No, of course not! What the hell is happening? Aden?
ADEN
[PANICKING] Irene, I’m so sorry. I’ve never actually experienced this before, I—I don’t—oh, Jesus, oh, no.
CAROL
Aden, it’s okay. We’re gonna be okay.
ADEN
But she’s—
CAROL
[OVERLAPPING] It’s fine. You just stay on hold for us, okay? I’ll call you if anything happens.
IRENE
[SNAPPING] Okay, you know what? I’m getting really, really fed up with things happening and me never knowing what’s going on. That’s all I’ve gotten ever since I moved to this town. So, either one of you tells me what’s going on, or I’ll go home and find out myself.
CAROL
[PANICKED] You’re in some grave danger, Irene. That’s the best way I can describe it right now, ‘cause we don’t got time. Just, trust me. Please.
[A TENSE PAUSE.]
IRENE
Fine.
[THE MUSIC ENDS WITH THE CHIME OF A BELL.]
[THERE IS A PAUSE BEFORE AN AUDITORY GLITCHING NOISE PLAYS, WHICH IS FOLLOWED BY A FEW SECONDS OF CHOPPY STATIC. THERE IS A CLICK.]
UNKNOWN VOICE
—hoped the Foundation would have been a little more generous with their funds, but, also I’m not surprised they—
[THE SPEAKER IS CUT OFF BY ANOTHER AUDITORY GLITCH.]
[PHONE BEEP.]
[RECORDING ENDS.]
AUTOMATED VOICE
Today's quote is: “My soul is a black maelstrom, a great madness spinning about a vacuum, the swirling of a vast ocean around a hole in the void, and in the waters, more like whirlwinds than waters, float images of all I ever saw or heard in the world: houses, faces, books, boxes, snatches of music and fragments of voices, all caught up in a sinister, bottomless whirlpool.”
Fernando Pessoa, as published in The Book of Disquiet, 1982.

Note
I recently learned that both me and my mom are anemic, So I was wondering..how would members of the Volturi Coven react to their bloodsinger having anemia?? does it make the blood taste/smell off to them?? does it reduce their urge to feed on their mate? would they become more protective of their singer then normal? Or maybe become more violent? Same question with the Egyptian Coven. I love your tumblr, you always give a deeper look into the culture of vampires! :3
Hello, fellow anemic buddy! These are really interest concepts to considering since I regularly mope around about how I will never be able to attract vampires since my blood is probably not nutritious.
I think it really depends how you characterize vampire’s metabolism. There are a few different types of anemia that result from having too little of certain substances: Microcytic anemia (commonly caused by iron deficiency in women, also those that have thalassemia trait- hello there 👋🏻), Macrocytic anemia ( B12 or folate deficiency), Sickle cell anemia (irregularly shaped, which leads to rupture), and Normocytic normochromic anemia (chronic conditions such as liver disease or after acute blood loss).
Technically, the majority of blood is made up of proteins, such as hemoglobin and albumin, rather than inorganic metals, such as iron and copper. During the transformation, vampire venom could result in the over-expression of mutated proteins that are able to break-down and convert blood proteins into glycolysis and the citric acid cycle intermediates, giving them the energy they need. I made a more detailed biochemistry-like post here.
Assuming that it is these blood proteins that vampires need to function, vampires would probably not be attracted to the scent of individuals with thalassemia or sickle cell traits. Both of these conditions result in atypical hemoglobin molecules. Individuals with microcytic anemia and macrocytic anemia would probably have a different flavor that would depend on the vampire, but would still be nutritious and attractive since their blood protein levels are normal. Meaning, it probably wouldn’t change their behavior toward their mate and/or blood singer.
Since certain conditions that lead to anemia- like having sickle cell or thalassemia - are protective against malaria, which is a parasite that affects the blood cells. In the case of sickle cell, the infected cells change into their sickle form and are more easily destroyed in the spleen. Now, technically vampire venom is suppose to be “pumped” through the bloodstream. So, I’m not really sure if it binds to blood cells or if it’s just floating in it. If it does bind, I would imagine that individuals with these conditions may either have extended transformation or may have intense responses that could increase their likelihood of not surviving the transformation. Although, I do think it be cool if their genetics could unlock some sort of cure or something though. But, also then I wouldn’t be able to be a vampire which would be totally not cool.

Thess vs Food
Let’s talk about food. Or rather, let’s talk about how unhealthy a relationship with food so many people both have and want to promote. It’s like ... people forgot what food is for somewhere along the way, and I don’t understand it even a tiny bit.
Part of this is prompted by an editorial in the Guardian yesterday that was going on about how everyone in the world simply must change their diet to be plant-only or the whole planet is doooooomed. It was amazing how few people went, “Hey, I get that industrial farming is currently made of ass, but maybe we should try to reform it, not to mention try to go to solar and wind power instead of doing the whole fossil fuels thing before we start making billions of people feel guilty about their diets?”. One of the comments actually said, “Hey, a little vitamin deficiency is okay!”, which is where I noped out because not only am I anaemic myself, I have been working in medical for a very long time and in every speciality I have ever worked in, there have been a multitude of letters talking about how X patient is deficient in Y vitamin and it needs to be handled because hey, guess what? Being vitamin deficient is not okay.
I’m not down on vegetarians, by the way. I’ve known a lot of vegetarians, and I take a live and let live policy about vegetarians. But a lot of vegetarians, particularly vegans, don’t offer the same courtesy. So let’s get one thing straight right the hell now: not everyone is in a position where they can be on a plant-only diet. My anaemia, for example. It’s pretty mild, but I need vitamin supplements to keep my iron levels decent even with red meat in my diet. Yes, I know that there are some plant-based foods that are iron-rich. Weight-for-weight, though, it’s not enough. I don’t like quinoa (and even if I did, I am leery of something that has a reputation for being farmed in an exploitative manner), I have an aversion to nuts and tofu for a couple of reasons, lentils take forever to cook, there’s only so much spinach one person can eat, and there are some significant gastric effects when living on a diet of mostly beans that I really don’t feel equipped to deal with. Long story short, red meat is the easiest way for me to get even close to a sufficient amount of iron in my diet. I wish people would stop shaming me for that. And that’s just me. What about people with allergies? Everyone goes on about how nuts are all the protein and iron you could need but nut allergies are a serious issue.
I think a lot of this comes down to how people perceive food in general. It feels like a lot of people think that eating is some kind of weird indulgence. They sure as hell don’t understand what calories are, never mind what they’re for. So let’s make this abundantly clear:
A calorie is not a bad thing. It is not a indictment of how weak and sinful you’ve been. It is a unit of energy. Nutritional guidelines use the large calorie - the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. That energy? Also powers everything you do - from breathing to blinking to thinking. People need a couple of thousand calories on an average day; and yes, people who are dieting need less so they start burning stored fat, but not that much less. Burning fat cannot entirely replace food as an energy source, partly because it’s inefficient but mostly because...
Food isn’t just about calories. Food is also about nutrients. We need a wide range of vitamins, minerals and other stuff just to keep going without significant health problems. Iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, the alphabet vitamins (including a wide variety of B vitamins) ... hell, even sodium and zinc and a whole lot of other weird shit. How do we get those? ...Well, I have to supplement mine with pills in places, as do a lot of other people, but mostly we get it through food. The whole ‘five servings of fruits and vegetables a day’ thing isn’t about, “FULL STOMACH WITH FEWER CALORIES!”; it’s about energy and necessary dietary nutrients.
All of this can make it sound like eating is a chore. We change that by making food enjoyable. We can make it taste good by cooking it in certain ways, spicing it in certain ways, and finding things that are good to eat both for our bodies and, in a more specific appeal to the body, our taste buds. There is nothing wrong with enjoying food. We need some simple joys in our lives; stop stripping the easier ones to manage away with eighteen different flavours of guilt.
Food is awesome. Yes, industrial farming needs reform - but that covers plants as much as animals. There is nothing wrong with dieting but there is something significantly wrong with trying to turn the entire planet anorexic. We should be able to find ways to make things better for the planet and for our bodies without shaming people for their needs, and without taking yet another bit of fun and pleasure out of the world. We already guilt people about sex; let’s not do it with food as well.
(I also still want to know what we’d do with the current generation of cows, pigs, sheep, chickens etc if we outlawed all livestock farming tomorrow. We couldn’t release them into the wild, because not only are they not bred to survive in the wild, but the ecosystem would collapse if you added that many new herbivores to it. So we’d have to slaughter them all anyway. Then again, I wouldn’t put that past PETA, given their track record...)

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance: Why the Difference Matters
Although we have a lot to learn about food intolerances, ever-growing research proves that they aren’t psychological or make-believe. Read on to learn the differences between a true food allergy and a food intolerance, some examples of common food intolerances, and how healing your gut can, in some cases, alleviate the problem.
Food intolerances are very real—and can have serious consequences if they’re ignored. Check out this article to find out the difference between a food allergy and a food intolerance. #wellness #chriskresser
Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance—They’re Not the Same
Food allergies are on the rise, especially in children:
Between 1997 and 2011 food allergies increased by 50 percent in American children (1)
Today, around 1 in 13 children and 1 in 25 adults in the United States suffer from a life-threatening food allergy (2)
In a true food allergy, a person’s immune system produces immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in response to her consumption of a particular food. These IgE antibodies initiate a cascade of events that can affect the skin (hives), the respiratory tract (wheezing), and/or the GI tract (vomiting).
In severe anaphylactic cases, an allergic reaction can be life threatening if not treated immediately with epinephrine.
Even more common than food allergies, food intolerances are estimated to affect up to 20 percent of the population in industrialized countries. (3, 4, 5) Food intolerances are not IgE mediated and are thought to be caused by specific enzyme deficiencies, impaired food absorption, and other GI issues. (6) In many cases, other immunoglobulin antibody responses may also be involved (IgA and IgG)—but more on that later.
Food intolerances generally don’t trigger the dramatic or immediate reactions associated with food allergies, but they’re every bit as real, with varied symptoms like nausea, vomiting, respiratory problems, brain fogginess, and skin reactions such as eczema.
If unmanaged, food intolerances can have serious health consequences too. If you don’t know you have a food intolerance and keep eating the offending food(s), you increase your risk of developing an autoimmune disease, neurological disorders, and more. (7, 8, 9, 10)
Five Common Food Intolerances
Let’s explore some common food intolerances that affect millions of people.
1. Celiac Disease
Often confused with a wheat allergy, celiac disease (CD) is not an allergy but rather an autoimmune disease, characterized by an inflammatory immune response to wheat gluten, rye, barley, and related proteins. Affecting 1 to 5 percent of Americans, CD usually manifests as GI disturbances like abdominal pain and diarrhea, but many patients with CD have no GI symptoms and may not even know they have it. (11, 12)
These atypical, or “silent,” forms of CD are far from harmless. Silent CD is associated with higher rates of iron deficiency, anemia, osteoporosis, neurological symptoms, and a nearly fourfold increase in the risk of death. (13, 14)
2. Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance
CD screening only tests for antibodies to a few components found in gluten, but people can react to many other components of wheat and gluten in a condition called non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). (15, 16, 17, 18, 19) No robust diagnosis yet exists for NCGS. The best clinical description is: “a reaction to gluten that resolves when gluten is removed from the diet, and CD and allergy have been ruled out.” (20)
Despite its inexact diagnosis, NCGS is real—and studies are proving it. Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials indicate that a subset of people who do not have CD or a wheat allergy can and do indeed react horribly to gluten when they don’t know whether they are being given gluten or not. (21, 22, 23)
Up to one in 20 Americans may have NCGS, which can affect the brain, skin, endocrine system, stomach, liver, blood vessels, and more. NCGS can produce a wide range of symptoms: (24, 25, 26)
Bloating
Abdominal pain
Gas and related pain
Diarrhea
Constipation
Tiredness
Headache
Anxiety
Foggy mind
Eczema
Chronic fatigue
Joint and muscle pain
Asthma
Depression
Unfortunately, many health professionals still don’t take NCGS seriously, which does a huge disservice to those suffering. In fact, NCGS, especially if undiagnosed, can be even more serious than CD. Epithelial damage to the gut, systemic immune activation, and systemic inflammation are all linked to NCGS. (27) By continuing to eat gluten, patients with NCGS are at higher risk of developing arthritis, thyroiditis, multiple sclerosis, ataxia, diabetes, and even amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). (28, 29, 30, 31)
3. FODMAP Intolerance
Sometimes, people who think they are sensitive to gluten may actually be intolerant to FODMAPs, or fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. FODMAPs, a type of carbohydrate, are found in many common foods besides wheat, including:
High-fructose fruits
Asparagus
Brussels sprouts
Garlic
Onions
In the case of FODMAP intolerance, the GI tract isn’t fully digesting and absorbing these short-chain carbs, which are then fermented by gut bacteria, creating gas and increasing fluid movement into the large bowel. (32)
FODMAP intolerance is common in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). By adhering to a low-FODMAP diet, up to 75 percent of people have relief from functional gut disorder symptoms, especially IBS. (33, 34, 35, 36, 37). However, a low-FODMAP diet is not advisable long term because it can decrease microbial diversity and density of beneficial bacterial species. (38, 39)
4. Lactose Intolerance
Up to 65 percent of the world’s population—literally billions of people—may be lactose intolerant. (40) Lactase, the enzyme that digests the milk sugar lactose, is present in infants and young children, presumably to digest breast milk, but many people don’t maintain full lactase function beyond childhood. (41, 42)
Why Eat Dairy, Anyway?
Most iterations of the Paleo diet don’t include dairy. But, if well tolerated, dairy can be a nutritious and beneficial part of a Paleo template. If you’re not eating fish heads, bones, and skin, getting adequate calcium without dairy isn’t easy. Pastured dairy is a great source of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K2 and is a primary source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a beneficial, naturally occurring trans fat thought to have anti-cancer properties. (43)
5. IgG- and IgA-Mediated Food Intolerances
Many prominent immunologists argue that some (maybe even most) food intolerances do activate the immune system, but rather than being IgE mediated like a food allergy, they are mediated by IgG and IgA antibodies. IgG- and IgA-mediated food intolerances are thought to be related to increased gut permeability and are often implicated in Crohn’s disease and other GI conditions. (44, 45) If the gut is permeable, food molecules can escape and be detected by the immune system.
Symptoms of these intolerances range from allergy-like reactions such as rashes and asthma to GI symptoms like cramps, constipation, and diarrhea and neurological symptoms such as migraines. (46) Unlike IgE-mediated responses, IgA- and IgG-mediated responses can take days or even months to occur, which makes identifying the culprit(s) more difficult. (47)
How to Overcome a Food Intolerance
People with food allergies generally have them for life, although children sometimes can “outgrow” allergies to milk, egg, wheat, or soy. But you might be able to do something about a food intolerance by healing your gut.
Food intolerance circles back to compromised gut health. In most cases, a food isn’t being digested properly and/or or food molecules are getting past the gut lining when they shouldn’t be able to.
Here are some ways to fix your gut:
Increase stomach acid using supplementation and herbs. Stomach acid is needed for digestion. Although many people think they have too much stomach acid, they may in fact have too little.
Get tested and treated for SIBO or intestinal pathogens to reestablish a healthy gut flora.
Eat sauerkraut and other fermented foods and consider taking a probiotic supplement.
Eat fermentable fiber, as prebiotics can be even more effective than probiotics at improving the microbiota profile.
Drink bone broth. The gelatin, glycine, and glutamine in bone broth all have beneficial effects for the gut.
Should You Get Tested for a Food Intolerance?
The most budget-friendly way to identify food intolerances is a 30-day Paleo reset diet, as I’ve outlined in The Paleo Cure, where the most common offenders (dairy, grains, legumes, sweeteners, processed foods, industrial seed oils, and alcohol) are removed from the diet for 30 or even 60 days and then systematically reintroduced.
If your suspected food intolerances seem linked to severe reactions or conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), IBS, or ulcerative colitis, the Paleo autoimmune protocol (AIP) diet, which goes a step beyond Paleo by also initially removing eggs, nightshades, coffee, nuts, and seeds, might be prudent. In a study published in 2017, 11 of the 15 IBD patients who adopted an AIP diet achieved clinical remission in just six weeks! (48) This further supports the idea that the gut and food intolerances are intricately linked.
But because reactions don’t always appear right away, these rudimentary dietary experiments can be incomplete. The next option would be IgA- and IgG-based blood tests.
A lot of controversy surrounds blood tests that screen for food intolerances based on IgA and IgG levels. Some scientists and immunologists claim that levels of IgG and/or IgA antibodies in the blood merely reveal that a patient has been exposed to certain foods, not that they are necessarily intolerant to these foods. (49, 50, 51) I interviewed Dr. Aristo Vojdani, a respected immunologist with many peer-reviewed papers, on this very subject. We explored some of the reasons why not all food intolerance tests are created equal, such as how testing cooked versus raw foods can yield different outcomes, but not all tests measure both. (52)
It’s clear we need more research surrounding reliable, reproducible, and scientifically founded food intolerance testing. However, food exclusion diets based on IgG and/or IgA antibody testing have provided relief for symptoms of:
Ulcerative colitis (53)
IBD (54)
Migraines (55)
Skin disorders (56)
At my clinic, we use the IgG/IgA tests offered by Cyrex Labs. (Your healthcare provider will have to order this for you as this is not a direct-to-consumer lab.) Array 3X identifies gluten and gluten-related protein intolerances. If a patient has celiac disease or NCGS, they are very likely to have other food sensitivities, and I might follow up with Array 4 or Array 10. (57)
Now I’d like to hear from you. Did you know the details of a food allergy vs. food intolerance? Have you ever been dismissed or mocked for claiming to have a food intolerance? Let me know in the comments!

Anywhey You Want It
Protein is something humans reap naturally from food. From hunter-gatherer times, until the 1950’s, people seemed to survive, grow and function just fine without additives and supplements, so what happened? In the early 1900’s, a man named Bob Hoffman was one of the first people to suggest nutrition influenced the health and strength of a “man” (24, Hall and Fair).
Bob Hoffman greatly protested the early protein powders. He believed everything humans needed for an ideal physique could be provided by a balanced diet. His focus on nutrition’s bodily effect prompted people to pursue a perfected form—a way to maximize protein consumption, for a better physical outcome.
Thus, protein powder was born. One of the first was “by Patton’s dietetic of Los Angeles and Schenectady and contained such ingredients as soy beans, deep sea kelp, and whole wheat germ” (24, Hall and Fair). This sparked the beginning of body building that Americans, today, may be more familiar with. Protein became a revolutionary way to bulk muscle, without eating massive amounts of food.
Tumblr media
So if protein powder was born among the body building community in Los Angeles, how did it end up in the hands of the average consumer? Re-appropriation of protein supplements to target specific demographics like professional athletes, body builders, or people looking to lose weight, has driven the market in multiple directions. Protein powder was born from a culture obsessed with physical appearance. Now that protein products are becoming more ubiquitous in grocery stores, questions of who has access to such an excessive product and why are they buying it come to mind. Could protein powder be an indicator of larger cultural beauty standards?
Ulterior to the relationship between protein powder, working out and beauty standards, the expansive availability of vegan protein powders may be in response to increased popularity of veganism and vegetarianism. Agriculture and animal production are two of the largest contributors of green-house gases and climate change. In response, research has suggested Americans should reduce meat consumption to discourage animal production (Joyce, et al, 2012).
Tumblr media
Being the meat centered culture that America is, concerns of protein deficiency are large. Protein powder then becomes a viable option to help make up any nutritional gaps created by the omission of animal products. This study cannot speak for all American’s, however, so from her on I will be talking about protein powder consumers.
Funny enough, modern vegan powders are not totally unlike the original made back in 1950, soy is still a fairly common additive. The major difference between then and now though, is that people want more than just protein, they want a full serving of vegetables, antioxidant fruits, super food blends, biotin, collagen, vitamins, probiotics—things that would not be in your average hamburger.
My point is, protein powder has become a lot more than just protein, it’s become more of a cultural product in America, and for this study D.C. It is still used by athletes and body builders, but now D.C. residents outside these categories are hoppin’ on the Whey Train, hoping these magical protein powders will transform them as well. A self-awareness of environmental impact, in hand with influences from cultural beauty and fitness paradigms, creates an imaginary necessity for protein powder.
Understanding protein powder is not vital for survival, I would like to reconfigure it as a dietary accessory. Using ethnographic data collected from GNC, Safeway, Whole Foods and CVS, I use the position of protein powder in the store, as well as the availability of natural/conventional powders to generate an idea of the kind of customer these stores are targeting.
So what is my protein powder consumer profile? It seems the person stores are marketing to is affluent, health oriented and body conscious. Quick disclaimer: I only witnessed protein powder being purchased once during my time in the field, so all of my conclusions as to who protein consumers really are, are drawn from observations of the greater environment of each store.
Out in the real world D.C. residents do purchase protein powder. The fact that specialty stores, like GNC, exist shows there is demand in D.C.; however, I think demand for vegan or ‘natural’ protein powder is growing.
Tumblr media
GNC has a limited selection of “healthy” powders, as the majority of their brands contain long lists of unknown (and unpronounceable) substances. The lack of business when I visited the store seems to suggest a decline in the popularity of their products, though I would also posit online markets may reflect a very different reality. These observations from GNC, combined with high prices ranging from $19.99 to $64.99, tells me protein buyers must be of higher economic status. Being located in a business area of D.C., I also suggest GNC’s protein customer is educated and health conscious (because they are buying protein powder).
Tumblr media
Whole Foods has a growing supply of natural protein powders. The average Whole Foods customer fits the archetype of my consumer—affluent and health conscious with the added bonus of environmental awareness. Whole Foods itself has a reputation for being fairly elite, as suggested by its nickname, “Whole Paycheck.” The high prices, starting at $25.99, of natural protein powder works to limit those who have access to the additive, repositioning protein as a status symbol (and supporting my hypothesized affluency of a protein powder consumer).
Tumblr media
Safeway tries to recreate the Whole Foods upper class ambiance by placing protein powder in the ‘natural’ aisle, which stands apart from the rest of the store because of its ‘natural’ wood flooring and organic labels. The aesthetic shift accentuates the segregation of ‘natural’ foods from the rest of the store. Protein powders can only be found in this aisle, and their selection is limited to natural and vegan brands.
Prices did start a little lower, at $16.99, however the large aisles, carts and adjacency to neighborhoods, suggested it is more of family grocery store. Therefore, these prices may still be considered high if two or more people are using the protein product.
The aesthetic separation of the natural aisle works to further emphasize protein powder as a status symbol by mimicking “whole paycheck.” Consumers of natural protein powder are physically and economically separate from the average Safeway shopper.
Tumblr media
CVS bridges the gap between Whole Foods and Safeway as it has both natural and conventional protein powders, despite its limited selection. Once more, I would like to bring attention to the placement of the conventional powder behind a support beam. This suggests CVS prioritizes the visibility of the natural protein powders. Maybe this means they expect customers who are looking for protein powder to be looking for natural brands. The natural products are consistently more expensive, starting at $23.99, than those that are not, which start at $20.79. The customer who purchases the natural product is likely someone with the resources to do so. Yes, there are the conventional options, but it seems clear that protein powders have taken a turn for the natural and expensive.
Discussion Looking across the four stores, protein powder is clearly a dietary accessory. Where powders once served a specific purpose for body builders, protein markets have expanded their appeal by incorporating other nutritional additives. High prices limit the accessibility of protein powder, something even greater affected by the even higher prices of natural products. The concept of ‘natural’ seems to be a marketing tool used by stores (with the exception of GNC because they have a more specific weight lifting demographic). “Natural” and “organic” tend to have upper class connotations or affiliations due to price trends (and whole paycheck). Protein powder’s affiliation with body builders may appeal to consumers’ desire to improve their musculature, but I argue this association is too limited now.
The socioeconomic affiliation with “natural” pricing and superadditives advertised on protein powder labels began to appeal to a broader audience. The cosmetic origins of protein continue on today as they aid in achieving cultural ‘fit’ beauty standards. This leads me to believe my Whey Train people are of a middle to upper socioeconomic class who seem to favor plant-based proteins in the interest of improving their health and physique.

What are the reasons for hair loss, "they" actually cause hair loss
Qilu Evening News reported that hair loss is really a headache. Every day, whether you are going to work or after get off work, whether you are shopping or attending a party, you have to worry about your hair and sweat! I worry about colleagues, friends, partners and family members. Depreciate your own image and look at yourself with another eye. Over and over again, what happiness is there to talk about in life. So what are the reasons for the U-turn, I have sorted it out, as follows:
1. The pace of life is accelerating: Nowadays, everyone is busy with houses, cars, and tickets. They are exhausted every day in the long river of life, which increases mental stress, irregular rest periods, and messy diet. This causes the hair to fall, some even more severely.
2. For beauty at all costs: not only is the love of beauty not only demanded by many women, but many men also pay more attention to their own appearance. Compare this to a society that struggles with appearance. As a result, I often dye my hair with perm and change my hair style, but in the process of perm and dyeing, the hair quality and roots are already scarred and will fall off at the touch of a touch.
3. Staying up late has become commonplace: whether it is due to work, or to go out with friends, or to pass the time because of boredom. Staying up late for a long time has a great impact on your health, and it will naturally threaten the normal growth of your hair, causing it to have problems and gradually fall off.
4. Increase in the number of heavy-tasting people: Perhaps it is the reason for eating for too long. Many people are a little bored with home-cooked meals, and like to eat high-fat foods and spicy and irritating foods, becoming heavy-tasting people. High-fat foods will make the sebaceous glands secrete too strong and block the hair follicle pores. Too spicy food will cause dry hair, and eating too sweet will speed up the growth of bacteria. These will directly or indirectly damage the hair and cause the hair to fall.
5. The perfect body is more important: It is no longer the age when fat is beautiful. The devil body has become the goal pursued by many women, and it is also the stunner that many men desire to own. It may be due to laziness. When it comes to weight loss, people can't help but think of dieting or only being vegetarian. Insufficient intake of protein and trace elements over time, causing hair loss due to severe malnutrition
6, wantonly enjoy air-conditioning: With the advent of winter, more adjustments. With the improvement of living conditions, air-conditioning becomes more and more common, and people also become more and more hypocritical, afraid of cold and heat. However, regardless of whether the air conditioner is heating or cooling, it is easy to cause the indoor air to become abnormally dry and lack moisture. Especially women who use the air conditioner for a long time are more likely to lose their hair due to the loss of moisture and nourishment.
7. Mobile phones and computers are uninterrupted: Computers and mobile phones have become necessities of life. Some people can even skip meals and cannot live without mobile phones. Most of the daily workload of people in the workplace is done in front of the computer. What's more, on the way home from get off work, most of the time before going to bed after dinner is spent with the mobile phone. Regardless of computer radiation, just use the brain time to consider. Using the brain for a long time will easily increase the excitability of the brain and affect the endocrine function related to hair growth. This will cause the hair to lose its nutrient supply and cause obstacles to the hair, resulting in fragile hair. Sex increased, and severe hair loss appeared.
8. The cause of the disease: In fact, many diseases can make people's hair fall more severe, even hair loss. Only when the primary disease is cured, the hair loss caused by it can be resolved naturally. So what common diseases can cause severe hair loss? For example, iron deficiency anemia, hypothyroidism, scalp diseases and fungal infections, lupus erythematosus, etc. are all diseases that cause hair loss.
It turns out that there are so many reasons why hair loss is serious. Maybe many friends don't pay too much attention to these in their lives. That's why so many people suffer from the torture and trouble of hair loss. Of course, the reasons for hair loss are more than these, I will not list them all here. After clarifying the cause of hair loss, what can be done to effectively prevent hair loss?
After investigation and analysis, the best way to treat hair loss, and the best choice is to use Heileya. Shouhei Leya extracts plant essences, which are rich in effective active ingredients, can quickly reach the hair follicles, improve the growth environment of the hair follicles and the nutrient supply system, and activate the mow cells to restore vitality, achieve rooting and growth, and completely solve the problem of hair loss.
Persisting in the use of Heileya can promote thick, black and beautiful hair, so that patients with hair loss can get rid of the troubles of hair loss, improve their appearance, and regain their self-confidence in life. Heileya has quickly become popular in the industry and is trusted by consumers with its "safe, healthy, and efficient" treatment concept and its true and effective treatment concept for hair loss since it was launched on the market.
Life is repeated every day, and hair fall will naturally happen again and again. Only by getting enough attention and taking effective treatments to solve the serious situation of hair loss can life continue in the light and heat.

Helloooo! Honestly, I planned to eat more, but I just forgot to add some things into my meals. I had 1/2 a baked potato (planned for a whole one) with some black beans and veggies, and then a delicious red themed fruit salad (raspberries, red grapes, strawberries). I was going to have this protein chocolate milk (190 cals for 1 cup, 20g protein) but I just forgot haha. Tomorrow is supposed to be a fast, but since we're going to the movies and eating beckfast together, it might be hard to do that.
Also, for some reason my stepmom came up to me and just said wow you look really tired. Out of nowhere. Weird

Bleeding Disorders
Bleeding Disorders, also known as Hemophilia, von Willebrand Disease, Coagulation Disorders, Blood Clotting Disorders, Clotting Factor Deficiencies
Bleeding disorders are rare disorders affecting the way the body controls blood clotting. If your blood does not clot normally, you may experience problems with bleeding too much after an injury or surgery. This health topic will focus on bleeding disorders that are caused by problems with clotting factors, including hemophilia and von Willebrand disease.
Clotting factors, also called coagulation factors, are proteins in the blood that work with small cells, called platelets, to form blood clots. Any problem that affects the function or number of clotting factors or platelets can lead to a bleeding disorder. A bleeding disorder can be inherited, meaning that you are born with the disorder, or it can be acquired, meaning it develops during your life. Signs and symptoms can include easy bruising, heavy menstrual periods, and nosebleeds that happen often. Your doctor will review your symptoms, risk factors, medical history, and blood test results to diagnose a bleeding disorder. Your doctor may recommend medicines or clotting factor replacement therapy to treat the bleeding disorder. Some bleeding disorders are lifelong conditions, and some can lead to complications. Even if you do not need medicine to treat the bleeding disorder, your doctor may recommend taking precautions before a medical procedure or during a pregnancy to prevent bleeding problems in the future.   TRANSCRIPT
Lita T  00:07  Hello and welcome to another episode of PodcastDX. The show that brings you interviews with people just like you whose lives were forever changed by a medical diagnosis. I'm Lita.
Ron  00:18  I'm Ron
Jean  00:19  and I'm moving to Hawaii.
Lita T  00:21 No, she's not
Jean  00:22   it snowed again last night.
Lita T  00:23  I know but
Ron  00:24  and today
Jean  00:25  and today
Lita T  00:26  still not moving to Hawaii.
Jean  00:27  ohhh moving to Hawaii
Lita T  00:28  Remember when you said you cannot shovel lava?
Jean  00:30  Lava
Lita T  00:31  Okay,
Jean  00:31  this is true.
Lita T  00:32  We're staying here.
Jean  00:33  Okay.
Lita T  00:33  Collectively we're the host of podcast dx. March is bleeding disorders Awareness Month, although bleeding disorders may be acquired. On today's show, we're going to be talking about the most common inherited bleeding disorder, von Willebrand disease,
Jean  00:53  someone with (unitelligable) the blah...blah
Lita T  00:55  What?
Jean  00:56   Someone living with a bleeding disorder has blood, which does not clot properly.
Ron  01:02  When someone is injured and bleeding, a blood clot forms to hopefully...to hopefully stop that person from losing too much blood. This process requires both blood platelets and clotting factors which clump together to form something like a dam to stop the bleeding.
Lita T  01:20  Right?  I remember watching Grey's Anatomy.
Ron  01:22  (Chuckle)
Lita T  01:23  Okay, we need more platelets, right?
Jean  01:26  I don't watch Grey's Anatomy...but sure I could see them saying that.
Lita T  01:28  Yeah, cuz you know, somebody is bleeding. They need more platelets!
Jean  01:31  Right
Ron  01:31  That's not scripted.
Lita T  01:33  No, it's not.
Jean  01:33  No.
Lita T  01:35  Someone with a bleeding disorder may notice that they bruise easily bleed; excessively during medical or dental procedures or when cut; have unexplained nosebleeds and bleeding gums and internal bleeding. And when I was on blood thinners...no
Jean  01:54  Here we go...
Lita T  01:54  Right? Wait was I am blood thinners or aspirin? I was either on blood thinners or a baby aspirin at one time. And I was outside gardening. And I grabbed a thorn bush.  Right? I was clipping and the thorn punctured something on my wrist. And I'm watching it and it's going: squirt, squirt, squirt, and I'm just watching it. I like Isn't that interesting? As it squirting like a squirt gun every you know it would like with my pulse. Squirt, squirt, squirt. And then finally I said: "Okay, better stop this." So, I put pressure on it to stop it. But um, yeah.
Jean  02:24  We're all surprised she's still here. (Chuckle)
Lita T  02:36  (Boisturious laughter)
Ron  02:36  But you definitely painted a picture.
Lita T  02:38  Yeah. Right. So that's what it would be like, if you have a bleeding disorder.
Jean  02:41  I don't know if that's exactly what it would be like, that sounds like an arterial spray that squirting in very, very dangerous.
Lita T  02:47  Okay, that's a bleeding disorder.
Jean  02:49  Bleeding problem.
Ron  02:50  So
Lita T  02:51  yeah.
Ron  02:52  In addition to obtaining a complete medical history, your healthcare provider may order a complete blood count, a bleeding time test and or a platelet aggregation test to help diagnose your condition.
Jean  03:07  And have you guys ever had a bleeding time test?
Ron  03:10  Me personally? No.
Jean  03:11  Oh, they like cut your, nick, your ear and then stand there and wait to see when it stops bleeding.
Lita T  03:18  (chuckling)
Jean  03:19  That's what I remember.
Lita T  03:19  like watching. paint dry?
Ron  03:20  I don't like your doctor's.
Jean  03:21  Yeah, well, that wasn't my doctor. That was my mom. Oh, no, just kidding. Okay. Um, treatment for bleeding disorders will likely depend on the severity and cause of the specific bleeding disorder an individual has.
Lita T  03:33  Right. And although I had never heard of it before, today, the most commonly inherited bleeding disorder is von Willebrand disease.
Ron  03:45  Well I can say that approximately 1% of the population here in the US are affected by von Villa brain disease. And it's characterized by an insufficient amount of a protein. Ironically, the von Willebrand factor or VFW
Jean  04:03  VWF
Lita T  04:04  The VFW hopefully doesn't. It's causing you to bleed you're going to the wrong  VWF
Ron  04:11  Did I say I do glasses. I'm sorry, the von Willebrand factor or v w F, which aids in the clotting,
Lita T  04:18  right? There are three forms of von Willebrand disease.
Jean  04:24  We're gonna say it differently every time you say
Lita T  04:26  Yes, okay. Individuals with type one have less VWF than average and may have associated bleeding issues.
Jean  04:37  Were and those living with type two von Willebrand disease have enough v wF in their system, but their Vidya wF does not function correctly or is incorrectly formed. And
Ron  04:49  type three, v w.f
Jean  04:52  Vwd  willen brand disease Oh, tight as opposed to von Willebrand factor. Oh, Okay,
Lita T  05:00  okay. So type three v WD.
Ron  05:03  Okay? So type three v WD is very serious individuals with this form of von Willebrand disease, do not make v w f at all. Oh, yeah, right. And their platelets cannot clot and this is very This is a very serious condition which makes bleeding difficult to control.
Lita T  05:23  That sounds terrible. Individuals with von Willebrand disease should typically avoid taking medications which may increase their risk of bleeding such as aspirin, or non steroidal anti inflammatories.
Jean  05:37  And if you have a bleeding disorder, it is vital that you inform your health care providers, including your doctors and dentists. And I would suggest if you know if it's a very serious form, that you have an ID bracelet that states that
Lita T  05:50  Oh, yeah, for sure. And carry a lot of gauze.
Jean  05:54  I don't get a tourniquet. I don't think you should be able to carry a tourniquet, no band aids. I think people that carry Okay, tourniquets are very serious,
Lita T  06:02  right. Okay. If you would like to know more about bleeding disorder awareness, check out the link to the national hemophilia foundation Foundation's website which will be on our web page, or you may want to donate to a red tie fundraiser.
Jean  06:21  And I think Haemophilia is what we've all associated with writing disorders. That's what I've heard, right? But it's very, very rare. It just gets a lot of publicity, because you hear about, you know, like Royals hat being haemophiliac and or being haemophiliacs because,
Lita T  06:34  you know, that's, that's where it came from.
Jean  06:37  No, it's just inbreeding, and the those, you know, because then you're passing the factor on and you're increasing the chance, or likelihood that two people with the same factor will pass it on. But
Ron  06:47  that's the most common, right. No,
Jean  06:49  no, no, it's not. It's very rare. von Willebrand disease is the most common. Isn't that weird? And we've never heard of that. Yeah, right. That's Yeah, it's very counterintuitive. It is very counterintuitive. But that's what the internet says, and we believe everything on the internet.
Lita T  07:07  And gene would like you to know about a blood parfait recipe in case you wanted to share this with your friends.
Jean  07:17  Well, the National hemophilia foundation does try to utilize different techniques to help people understand more about their blood and clotting. And to help illustrate that, they suggest that you could try to make a blood purvey, you could use a cream colored substance like vanilla ice cream, or maybe a yogurt as your base use Cheerios. And that will represent your platelets, although they're nice and round, which I don't understand. And you kind of want something like awkwardly shaped but red m&ms or red Hots, and those could be the red blood cells, white chocolate chips, or mini marshmallows. And these can be the white blood cells, pretzels. And these can be the fibrin which is the kind of the stuff that joins with platelets to form that your clot, okay. Gummy worms in the eye can actually represent the V WD. And to top it off, put on some rainbow sprinkles, and that'll represent the 13 other blood factors.
Lita T  08:14  Yeah, we'll be doing that.
Ron  08:18  I gotta tell you, I learned quite a bit on this. This morning.
Lita  08:21  Oh well, that's
Jean  08:22  that's good.
Lita T  08:23  Yeah, I'm glad somebody did. Yeah, I
Jean  08:24  learned we're not moving to Hawaii.
Lita T  08:26  No, we're not moving to Hawaii.

The Nutritionist Has Spoken!
Hey guys!
It’s been a crazy week with lots of new information, knowledge and YT watching. It’s actually been quite a distraction from my studying but....shit happens. This aside, the icing on the cake this week was sitting with the most fabulous nutritionist there ever was, Isabella.
Isabella isn’t just any nutritionist. She’s a teacher in biochemistry (and nutrition) at my school and intertwines naturopathy and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in her practice. This is all super amazing because she was teaching me the madness behind the process while also tryna help me sort my chemical, biological makeup.
So I brought a food diary of my meals from the past week as well as my blood tests to her clinic. After a quick Q&A bout lifestyle and such, Isabella dove right into my blood tests and broke it down for me:
1) Surprise, surprise. I’m in a bad B12 situation.  This wasn’t much of a shock but it seems like it may be a bit urgent so I made an appointment to get B12 shots.  I’m not sure if this is new though because in the States I also once saw a doctor that told me I was B12 deficient. Many people nowadays, vegan or not, happen to be B12 deficient because of the poor quality of industrialized foods. Also, turns out it’s a myth that we only get B12 for animal products. It used to be that we received these nutrients from the soil residue on root vegetables/other plants as well as from fresh stream water. Due to proper water purification systems we don’t get B12 this way anymore. Not to say we shouldn’t be using purified water-- not sure cholera is worth it lol-- it just means we need to find other ways to get B12. Fortunately, we live in an era where vitamins and supplements (when diagnosed properly) are in שפע aka abundance.
2) Iron is low-- another shocker. This is another thing that I’ve been told by a medical professional in the past (years before any vegan-like habits). All is okay though because it’s another easy thing to supplement. Isabella recommended that I take two tablespoons of Floradix a day. At a snap of a finger, I bought some and have been takin it ever since.
3) I’m in good general health and my cholesterol is f&ck!n amazing! I didn’t really fully understand her excitement about my cholesterol-- I’m still a young buck and I don’t eat fast food but I’m happy she was pleased.
Following the general breakdown of the tests we dove into the food diary and Isabella offered some great tricks and tips to help me fill any nutritional gaps during mealtimes. Here are the main takeaways listed gracefully below:
- **MO’ LEGUMES, MO’ PROTEIN!** Squeeze them in whenever possible and pair it with a grain to keep my ATP flowin. This trick I knew about from my biochem class with her but after looking at my week’s food diary it looked like I was not totally on top of it as much as I thought I was.
- Snack on some dried hummus (the type that they pick and dry when it’s still green- gentler on the stomach)
- Add some peas to the diet (maybe a pea soup omg yum)
- Tofu and tomato sauce on Iraqi pita for a quick fix pizza vibe.
- MASH AKA MUNG BEANS!!! This one I’m most excited about because I’ve never played with mash before. It’s so exotic for my American ass. She also mentioned they have pasta made of mash (of which Erez and I eat the lentil and black soy bean one often). So def gonna play with mash cannot wait omg stay tuned. The Chinese say mung beans are great for the liver and uterus too- FTW!
-  Add lentils to a pumpkin soup. In my food diary, I had pumpkin soup with no protein or legume involved. She said adding lentils is an easy quick fix.
- Dried Edamame. Can add to salads!
- Lentil spreads (easy recipes to throw in the freezer and mix with tehina- to be shared at a later date).
- Miso soup ! :-0 (lots of calcium and a Japanese favorite filled with calcium)
- Pickled cabbage (it’s a probiotic, did you know?!)
- Another thing Isabella mentioned was to boost some Calcium (although my levels are fine) by adding more almonds, sesame, cauliflower, cabbage, broc and okra.
Anyway, it was really inspiring and motivating to have someone examine my blood work and suggest the best ways to nourish my body. It’s amazing that a few adjustments and supplements can have a great influence on overall energy levels.
It also means that we really ARE what we eat because the food we eat designs our chemical makeup determining energy levels. In class, Isabella mentioned how we create energy (ATP) through the food we eat and that the food we eat is basically a collection of photons (light energy) transformed into chemical matter (photosynthesis, anybody?) One may conclude that we eat a bunch of light configured into mass and are therefore comprised of various chemical elements that are all a product of our consumption.
So, in a way, we’re big giant radiators and emitters of light. This can have a spiritual application as well.  Perhaps, the people and experiences we involve ourselves with also have a nourishing factor that influence our being and energy levels. Some theories I’ve encountered in my studies at school have affirmed this position too. With my current knowledge and life experiences, I think I’d agree...
Anyway, stay tuned for some more updates and some lighter topics! Like omg cafelix has vegan pastries. I’m never going to any other coffee shop again- best coffee shop in Tel Aviv!
Peace & Love & Good Vibrations
