The wound on his hand was healing well, scar tissue knitting his palm together. Despite all of the jobs he had taken recently, Madara had only sustained minor injuries. At least, minor injuries that drew blood. His body was sore all over but he had to push through it. Couldn't have all of ES gossiping about him like that if he could help it.

Madara runs his hand under some water in the communal kitchen sink. If anyone asked, he could say a knife slipped while cooking or something. Not entirely believable for him but better than the alternative.

He hears a familiar voice humming down the hall, lighter than air as a melody is born in the moment to his favorite musical genius. Madara smiles and turns off the water, running to catch Leo in a hug before the other boy could surprise him.

"Mikejimama! I'm back in Japan!" Leo hugs him back enthusiastically. It had been a few months since the two had seen each other, what with Madara's odd jobs and Leo living in Italy with Izumi most of the year.

"Leo-san!" Madara doesn't have the words to tell Leo how happy he is to see his boyfriend.

They pull away, Leo's eyes shining as he starts telling Madara about his life in Italy, the types of people he works with and all of the food (he insists that Madara should come with them next time so they can try out these cafes near their apartment together). Madara nods along, soaking in all of Leo's voice for safe keeping.

At some point, Madara finds himself bringing up a hand to brush aside Leo's hair from his face and Leo's eyes seem to trace the movement. His face falls and Madara realizes its the hand with the fresh scar.

"You're taking care of yourself right, Mama?" Leo brings his own hand up to Madara's, thumb tracing over the scar.

"Of course, Leo-san. I just cut myself while cooking last week. Don't worry about it." The lie slips from him easily, but neither of them buy it. Leo doesn't push, he never does (but maybe he should, someday, when they're safe and thousands of miles from here. Madara wants him to push for truth), but he brings Madara's palm to his lips, leaving a gentle kiss, and another and another, until Madara is laughing and Leo follows suit.

Madara pulls Leo in for a gentle kiss on the lips, still laughing, still smiling.

(Ariel anon again) You asked in some tags how I think Ariel should had been handled in the sequel...well, to be honest, I feel I would had rewritten the entire sequel because I don't like any bit of it lol, but if we go to Ariel's characterization, I always believed Ariel would had been the kind of mother who would had chose to "break the cycle" in regards of how she was raised, because in my opinion it's more consistent with her character. Following the LGBTQIA+ analogy you have brought up in your answers, Ariel would be the kind of mother that, based on her own experiences as a closeted teen, would be a loving, open-minded and supporting mother to her daughter so Melody would confide on her and come out to her in a loving, safe space. On the other hand, I think Ariel would never hide away her mermaid heritage from her daughter, but instead, would openly talk to her about the dangerous enemy (Morgana) who wants to harm her so Melody would had been informed and thus, not being as exposed and vulnerable as Ariel was with Ursula, and also would had worked with both Eric and Triton in a proactive way to hunt down Morgana in all corners of the sea and not stop until they would had found her (I hate how the sequel downplayed Ariel's fierceness of the original film. Being a mother doesn't means she lost her fire!). Maybe she would had asked Melody to no swim beyond certain points of the ocean, but I don't feel in character of her to forbid her daughter of something she loves and appreciates dearly and is a part of her, considering her own experience with her father and sisters.

Then again that would had been my personal approach on Ariel. When it comes to Melody I would had made her aware of her half-mermaid heritage from the beginning and maybe her arc should had been more about coming to terms with the two halves of her identity (half human, half mermaid). And Morgana wouldn't had existed either, I would had put another enemy, but again, my ideal TLM sequel would had been something like the new books: focusing on Ariel's life on land with Eric while keeping in contact with her family and friends in the sea instead of making a "Next Gen sequel", but those are my thoughts! SORRY for sending you so many asks but I have so many thoughts LOL and also I love your answers <3

No reason to apologize at all- you have so many wonderful thoughts and they're inspiring me to think of so many things that I've never been engaged to think of before. I definitely agree with you about Ariel not being so secretive with Melody. I think Ariel's strength in the first film was her willingness and desire to connect with others in a dialogue, as we see her often try to talk things out with her father. He's the one who prefers silence, and it's one of the things that irk Ariel most about him. She hates being shut down, she hates there being rules set in place that make no sense and not even being able to ask questions about why those rules are in place, she hates unresolved conflict and the "because I said so" mentality. Also, I think you hit on something important, which is that Ariel would allow Melody a space to be herself and come out and feel safe. Ariel never had that, so she sees the value in it...but also, the world's changed. 

While Triton's "gay" too in the metaphor, and he's deeply closeted and homophobic as a result, the world he grew up in and is holding onto is a different one. He actually fears for Ariel's safety should she ever accept herself and his negative experiences are so deeply ingrained in him that he makes himself willfully blind to future progress. It's like, my family is very intolerant of gay people but that's also because they came from a European village where it was pretty much punishable by death. Gay people were outcasts, alienated, and on the outskirts of society, often in physical danger because of their identity. However, I grew up in America and, while there were definitely problematic elements surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community and "agenda" growing up, I still think it was much more normalized and gay marriage was even legalized when I was just out of high school. Obviously, due to these external factors, when I have kids one day, it'll just automatically be totally different than it would've been for me experiencing the upbringing I did with the people that were shaped by the environment and era they were shaped by. I think, Ariel's already of another generation, but she also helped impact society through saving Eric and, ultimately, marrying him. She's the first mermaid to become human (to our knowledge) and her bridging those two worlds impacts the society of the universe in a way that's impossible to overestimate. So, to think she would just mindlessly parrot the parenting styles of someone with all the differences she and Triton share not only doesn't make sense but undercuts everything Ariel did in the first film to make the changes to her world that she did?

I also think Melody being so interested in the ocean, first off, totally fits in line with Eric's interests. He opens the first film with a clear appreciation for the open seas so I don't think it'd be so shocking and something that Ariel and Eric wouldn't have planned for? Also, Ariel never had a relationship with her sisters due to her not trusting them and having to be closeted around them. So, once she goes on land, I don't see her continuing much of a relationship with her sisters because there was never much of one in the first place and, now, she's more different from them than ever. If anything, Melody wanting to be a mermaid would be a beautiful way to give Ariel a reason to develop something with her sisters. Imagine if she allowed Melody to go into the ocean, but since Morgana hadn't yet been found, she would entrust Attina or Aquata to keep a close watch on Melody and swim around with her and show her the sights of the undersea kingdom while keeping her safe from Morgana's grasp. There's just...so much lost opportunity.

i would LOVE to talk more about parasitism!!! i’m by no means an expert but i think it’s super neat!!

something i didn’t know until studying ecology more is that finding parasites in an ecosystem can be an indicator of a really healthy environment! they fill an ecological niche, just like any other creature, and their absence would disrupt their community just like any other creature.

for example, i helped study a particular stream’s health by sampling fishes from it, then dissecting them and searching for parasitic worms. if i dissected a healthy adult bluegill and found it had heart worms, i might consider that a good thing for the stream’s biodiversity. it shows that the bluegill population is stable enough to produce healthy reproductive adults, and the worm population is stable enough to exist within the host body in a small enough capacity not to hinder its growth. win-win!

there’s a lot of parasites that are very careful in how they depend on their host! many spend their entire lives on/within a host’s body and rely on it for nutrition, so they need their host alive. (this is called endoparasitism - meaning the parasite lives inside the host body. the alternate is ectoparasitism - where the parasite lives on the host’s surface.)

some parasites move from host to host through the food chain, so they need to keep a low enough profile to be carried along. for example, a parasite might deposit its eggs onto the gills of an aquatic insect, where the eggs stay dormant and use the insect’s body as shelter. the eggs won’t develop and hatch until the host insect is eaten by a fish, giving the parasites a larger host body to grow into. they might develop into larvae in the fish’s heart and and just hang out there, remaining larvae, until the fish is eaten by a bird! now the parasite is in an even bigger host body, and it could mature into its adult form. it might make its home in the bird’s intestines, so its eggs can be dropped with the bird’s feces - and the cycle repeats!! the host organisms could live a complete life and successfully reproduce without the parasite causing it any problems!

not every parasite is that gentle though. there’s multiple millions of different parasitic species each with their own survival strategies, many of which are much more disruptive to the host. for example, some species of parasitic wasps have venom they can use to immobilize or affect the behavior of catterpillars, allowing the wasps to lay their eggs inside the caterpillar, sometimes completely filling the host body with eggs and killing it. so, you know, a bit less pleasant of an experience for the host.

i think it’s Loxothylacus panopaei (loxo), the parasitic barnacle that castrates mud crabs, laying their eggs in the host’s body and altering the hosts behavior to make it protect and nurture the parasitic eggs. in female mud crabs, this means they are prevented from laying their own eggs and instead care for the parasitic eggs. but get this - male mud crabs naturally have narrower bodies with no internal space for eggs, and no nurturing or protective behaviors for their own eggs. but when infected and controlled by loxo, male mud crabs’ bodies will widen to resemble the females, creating a space for loxo to lay eggs in them too. then the loxo causes the male crab to care for the eggs like a female would. this means loxo essentially doubled the amount of hosts it can use, and it reproduces crazy fast with this strategy. loxo’s intense and effective reproductive strategy means it’s spreading fast, invading regions where the crab populations haven’t evolved to have any defense against the parasite, and mud crab populations are in danger because of it. there’s ongoing efforts to study the interactions between loxo and mud crabs and to protect vulnerable populations in the chesapeake bay region.

compared to bluegill example, it just goes to show how much diversity there is among parasites and their impact. the heart worms in the bluegills and the barnacles on the mud crabs employ crazy different strategies with crazy different effects on their hosts. but they both have to have a degree of caution with their hosts - maintaining a population at the ecosystem’s carrying capacity requires the parasite to infect as many hosts as it can, but leave enough hosts alive long enough to reproduce so that the future generations of parasites will have hosts too. ecology is just a constant series of cost-benefit analyses and evolutionary microadjustments - how much can we take, but still ensure our children will have enough to survive?

parasitism is so fascinating to me as a case study in the way we interact with the natural world and apply our own morals onto nonhuman organisms. i think it’s easy to think of parasites as bad, mean creatures. i remember learning about forms of symbiosis in grade school science, where mutualism (where both of the organisms benefit from their interactions) was described like a happy friendship between two animals, and parasitism sounded like bullying. and i completely understand that gut reaction - seeing a deer turned pale and sickly from ticks draining their blood makes my heart ache, and i don’t think it’s wrong to feel that way. i don’t think compassion for the world around us is ever a bad thing. but i think it can be easy to follow that heartache into a somewhat pessimistic path. like, Cryphonectria parasitica (the fungus that causes chestnut blight) doesn’t have an evil plan to kill a chestnut tree. it’s an organism which has a sole motive of survival and reproduction, and parasitism is the method it’s evolved to achieve that.

anthropomorphizing can sometimes keep us from remembering that wildlife conservation cannot be limited to animals we think are cute. creepy crawlies have to be included in conservation efforts because excluding any member of an ecosystem disrupts every member of the ecosystem. we see this in cases like the absence of keystone species creating havoc down the food chain (think wolf restoration efforts in yellowstone) but similar problems can happen when we lose primary consumers from food chains too.

that’s not just a theoretical statement - there’s something like a 50% decrease in insect numbers globally caused by habitat loss, climate change, pollution, etc. i think education about invertebrate ecology and parasitology is so important in destigmatizing them so we can afford them the compassion and efforts they deserve to protect them. i love this ted talk by danae wolf, a conservation photographer who focuses on insects and spiders, where she expands on this topic. it’s not specific to parasites, but i think the insights she has are applicable there as well and overall worth the watch!
