You're exhausted. Everything feels dull. The brain is also crowded - from the darkness is a voice that tells you to keep going. Keep working. You don't have enough. You're not powerful enough. You wish your loved ones were enough for the voice to consider quitting its taunts and trash talk. You desire adventure and escape. Why must you be so weak? How long until you lose control of yourself again? You cannot show fear or despair. The voice grows in volume if you show powerlessness. Losing control means getting people hurt. Means becoming the truly irredeemable, immoral monster you've been this whole time. You need a distraction. You're not powerful enough to tackle this head-on. No one else can be involved - people could get killed again - your family could get killed again, by your own hands. ...You need to keep working.

She stumbles a bit, the wave of exhaustion and numbness thudding into her like waves against a harbor. The darkness, the voices...in spite of how frightening it is, she can't help but bend to it, now too exhausted to fight back. She's a rat running on a treadmill, racing itself to avoid a shock, unaware of the futility of the experiment she's participating in.

Shy's going to cry for a little bit, and then take a long, long nap. Next time she sees Ven...she's not sure if she should give him a hug or buy him coffee, but it's happening/

It's so wild to me how ag industry folks will admit in one breath that U.S. agriculture would collapse without foreign workers, and then in the next breath complain about how high wages are for H-2A workers. Like, I accept that y'all aren't hearing yourselves, but shit.
