Was it possible for someone who had been dead for over two thousand years to return to life? A few months back, Amy would say it was obviously impossible, but now she that was part of a world that she never imagined being real, she was facing that possibility.
Kamilah stared at her cell phone screen. Her perfect tan skin became pale and her beautiful brown eyes were wide in shock. She attempted to open her mouth to say something several times, but no words would come out.
“Kamilah,” Amy touched her arm in support, “are you sure that was really your brother?”
“I am. I haven’t seen Lysimachus for 2038 years, but I could never mistake him for anybody else. Amy, that was my brother in this screen and he needs my help.”
She started walking around the mansion, in a rhythm Amy couldn’t quite keep up with. First, she went outside for some air, then she went back to her office, searching for something.
“What are you looking for?” Amy asked, getting anxious to see her walking in circles.
“My phone,” Kamilah answered. “Where did I leave it?”
“It’s in your hands.”
Kamilah glanced at her hands and rolled her eyes. She attempting to contact Adrian but her shaking hands wouldn’t allow her to dial. Completely disturbed, she grabbed her car keys, heading to the garage.
“Wait, I’m coming with–” Amy shouted, following her. She didn’t have time to even change her clothes. Wearing a shirt and sweatpants, she joined Kamilah in her car.
In the driver’s seat, Kamilah stood frozen at the wheel, unable to start driving.
“Kamilah,” Amy told her. “You need to calm down. You’re having a panic attack. You’re not even breathing properly.”
“I don’t need to breathe at all.”
Yet, she followed Amy’s suggestion, taking deep breaths and exhaling slowly.
“I-I don’t know where he is!” Kamilah finally said, a little more calm. “I can’t do nothing to help him! They… They’re going to take him from me again…”
Amy never knew exactly what happened to Kamilah’s twin brother. It was a touchy subject and all she’d get from her was that Lysimachus was taken by the Romans.
“I know this isn’t the most appropriate moment but, what exactly happened to your brother? Did you actually see the body when the Romans took him?”
“I did,” Kamilah told, avoiding Amy’s gaze. She sighed before proceeding. “I was the one to set up his funeral. And the only one to mourn his death.”
“Is it possible he’s a vampire too?”
“No. It’s hard to explain to a mortal, but… I’d be able to tell.”
The rest of the drive to Raines Corporation was completely silent. Adrian wasn’t there yet, so Amy suggested they should go to the coffee shop he had inside the company. Kamilah ordered two cups of her usual strong black coffee.
“Who do you think that is keeping him?” Amy asked curious for the answer, but she already had one person in mind.
“I don’t know,” Kamilah pondered for a few seconds. “Being alive for 2063 years, I’ve made a lot of enemies.”
“What about Jameson? Being a psychic, is it possible he created an illusion for both of us to see?”
“I don’t think so. Besides, he’s safely imprisoned at the Shadow Den.”
After her incident, Amy hadn’t hear of Jameson’s whereabouts again. For safety reasons, Adrian and Kamilah kept the information for themselves. They still hadn’t caught which member of The Council was working with Jameson and Gaius.
“I’m sorry,” Amy reached for Kamilah’s hand, “but I can only think of one person.”
“Gaius,” Kamilah squeezed her hand tightly. “He wants to torture me. Make me pay for my betrayal.”
“We’ll find him. It’s just a matter of time. Besides, what would be the point of bringing your brother back to life and kill him again?”
“You don’t know Gaius, Amy. The things he’s capable of. But I admire your optimism, really. I don’t know what I’d do without it.”
A small smile appeared in the corners of Kamilah’s lips. Her cold hands were finally getting warm again in Amy’s touch.
Minutes later, Nicole Anderson, one of Adrian’s most trusted employees, delivered the news.
“Ms. Sayeed, Mr. Raines is ready to see you.”
She gave Amy a nasty scowl, like always, suggesting she wasn’t allowed to participate the meeting. If Amy suspected anyone, that was Nicole. Her attitude around her, especially after Lily was Turned, made it obvious she had other intentions in mind, other than becoming a vampire. Adrian was convinced she was only hurt she’d have to wait longer to accomplish her goals.
“Should I come with you?” Amy asked Kamilah.
“I’d rather if you stay here,” Kamilah told. “It’s too personal.”
Nicole smirked and walked away, followed by Kamilah. While she discussed her options with Adrian, Amy had her own ideas in mind.
———-
It wasn’t the smartest idea, but Amy was willing to do anything to ease Kamilah’s pain. She decided to take the measure in her own hands, paying a visit where she knew she could obtain some useful information.
“That’s it,” she finished telling Jax at the Shadow Den. “I suspected he could’ve escaped and could be playing tricks with our minds.”
“No, he’s been safely locked here for months,” Jax told. “But is it really possible? To bring someone, that has been dead for so long, back to life?”
“I don’t know yet.“
Part of her wanted Lysimachus to be alive. This way Kamilah would finally find some peace and happiness in her life. The other part wanted it to be fake, fearing how this entire situation could be changing everything, including their relationship.
“There you are,” Jax announced when they arrived at an underground dungeon. “Are you really sure you want to be alone with him?”
“I have to,” Amy nodded.
Jax shrugged and made his way back to the Shadow Den. Amy approached one of the cells. In a dark corner, she could see a figure, a little affected by the lack of blood and freedom.
“Amy,” Jameson smirked, “I knew sooner or later you’d come to me. Now tell me, what are you here for, my precious child?”
“I’m here for answers.”
“Oh the doubts… the doubts about who you truly are, your origins… it was about time.”
“What the hell are you talking about, psycho?!” Amy frowned and crossed her arms. “I’m here to ask you about Kamilah’s twin brother!”
“Her twin brother… Lysimachus was his name. He is dead, since 35 BCE. Or am I wrong?”
“He was. Until somebody brought him back to life.”
“I know nothing about it,” Jameson showed his handcuffed hands, “I’ve been a prisoner at this place for long weeks now.”
“I thought you could be using your little mind tricks,” Amy said. “Is there anybody else like you, that could do the same?”
“Only a few. But they do not live in New York City. I’m afraid they couldn’t be creating this illusion.”
“Then?”
“I assume my Master has achieved his goals. This is a proof, my dear Amy, of only part of what you can do.”
“W-What… has Gaius used my blood to bring him back to life?”
It all made sense now. Gaius disappeared, taking multiple bags of Amy’s blood with him. It shouldn’t be enough to resurect the First Vampire, but enough to make Kamilah’s brother live again.
Jameson limped until he was face to face with Amy, behind the cell bars. He gazed deeply into her eyes.
“A true descendant of Rheya,” he smirked. “Look at you. So weak, so frail… and deep down you hide all your potential. Your true self.”
His eyes were hypnotizing, Amy began to feel involved by them. The world around her started to spin, and she felt pulled into a vision.
She walked on the streets of New York City, but everything was in ruins. Buildings had been completely destroyed. The streets were empty. She could see corpses and puddles of blood everywhere she looked at.
“No…” Amy muttered.
Searching for Kamilah, she stopped in front of Ahmanet Financial’s building. Inside, she could hear a weak voice calling for her.
“Kamilah?”
In the main hall, she spotted not only her girlfriend, but also Adrian, Lily and Jax, severely injured. One by one they started converting into ashes.
“No!” Amy cried, kneeling beside Kamilah. “W-What happened… W-What did…”
“Amy,” Kamilah told, her body slowly fading in Amy’s embrace. “You can stop it…”
Another figure appeared in the vision. A woman. Amy felt somehow drawn by her presence.
“When the sap of the tree rests in the blessed chalice… the skies shall turn red, the earth shall be torn asunder… and the First shall walk again.”
“Who are you?” Amy asked.
“Rebirth… Reunification…”
Suddenly she was quickly pulled out from the vision. Jameson was still observing her, amazed.
“It seems like I’ve underestimated you, My Lady.”
With tears running down her cheeks and her heart thundering inside her chest, Amy quickly stormed off back to the Shadow Den.
“Amy,” Jax’s eyes went wide in surprise, seeing her state, “what happened down there? What did he…”
“I don’t wanna talk about it.”
———-
Returning to Raines Corporation, Amy learned Kamilah had already left to her company. A taxi dropped her in front of Ahmanet Financial and she entered, trying to recompose herself. Kamilah was already dealing with a lot. Bothering her with a vision, probably created by Jameson’s twisted mind, would be even selfish.
She was already known and respected by Kamilah’s employees. All of them knew she wasn’t only her assistant, but the woman that had been changing her life for better.
As usual, the female vampire was in her office behind a pile of papers. This was how Kamilah handled stress, by sinking herself into work.
“Hey,” Amy entered the office. “Adrian told me you left. I came here to check how you’re doing.”
Kamilah sighed and placed the papers aside.
“Amy, I’m sorry for leaving you behind. I needed a moment by myself. To organize my thoughts.”
“That’s okay,” Amy said, with a hint of disappointed.
“I have something to show you,” Kamilah revealed a hidden panel on her desk. She pressed her palm against it and from inside a secret drawer she retrieved a small object wrapped in cloth. “This is my most prized possession and I’m glad to share this with you.”
Amy looked at the wooden horse toy in her hands.
“Is it your brother’s?”
“Yes,” Kamilah thought. The corners of her lips curled up a little bit as she thought of her memories. “Our mother died when we were young, and our father was away at war, so Lysimachus and I practically raised ourselves. It was hard, but… there were still moments of joy. Of love. Of safety. This horse… it was his favorite toy. Our uncle gave it to him when we were five, and he treasured it long after he stopped being a child. The little brat would never share it with me either. So I’d have to steal it. And then he’d steal it back. That was a game unto itself. He only gave it to me once. When he left for the war. He told me to take care of it. Because he’d want it when he got back. And then he…”
“Kamilah…” Amy gently placed her hand over hers, she didn’t want the female vampire to feel any more stress or pressure.
“It doesn’t matter. I just know that I have to keep it safe.”
She wrapped the horse up and gently tucked it back into the drawer.
“I have something to tell you too,” Amy bit her lower lip nervously, as she knew it wasn’t something Kamilah would be pleased to hear. “I went to see Jameson at the dungeon. He told me…”
“You did what?!” Kamilah expression changed, from exhausted she looked completely angry. “Amy, have you forgotten what happened 24 hours ago? You were alone with a vampire for only a few minutes and you almost got killed!”
“Nothing happened to me, okay?!” Amy raised her voice too. “God, I’m tired of being the damsel in distress, who always need to be saved by Kamilah Sayeed, the Vampire Queen.”
For a moment she wished what Jameson told her was real. That inside her, she was carrying a dormant power. A power greater than any Vampire ever had, even Gaius. A power that would make them all bend to her will.
“Amy?” Kamilah was suddenly in front of her, touching her arm. “You spaced out. Are you feeling well?”
“No,” Amy placed a hand on her forehead. How could she be having that kind of thoughts? Jameson really knew how to play with people’s minds. “I think I’m tired. I should get some rest.”
She had barely reached the couch when Kamilah’s phone started ringing again, making them both freeze. With shaking hands, the female vampire answered.
Amy approached, watching the screen. It was the same young male as before, but this time he was lying on a bed, looking extremely weak and pale.
“B-Brother…” Kamilah called, obtaining no answer. “Are you alright? Brother! Talk to me.”
“He must be sleeping,” Amy tried to assure her, deep down she had the impression Lysimachus was in some sort of coma, or worse.
Somebody else approached the screen. A man. Only his figure on the screen was enough to give Amy shivers.
“Hello, My Queen. It’s always a pleasure to see you.”
Amy recognized that voice, from the day she was trapped in the library. She never could see his face, but his ancient and creepy voice marked her memory.
“G-Gaius! What did you do to my brother? What do you want from me?”
“This world has changed so much since I was betrayed by my progeny. I can’t tell exactly where we are. But you’re smart enough to figure out, My Queen. After all, you’ve built your own little empire around the planet.”
Kamilah clenched her fists in anger.
“Come quickly, My Queen. You’re running out of time. Or do you wanna lose him again?”

14.01 Round-Up
“Solid” is how I’d describe it, so if you haven’t seen it, I’d advise you not go into it looking to have your hair blown back, this was purely blueprint-unrolling and foundation-pouring. Decent bit of wasted time with random moments spent on nothingburger characters and filler commentary, so you’ll be able to spot the bearing walls going up straightaway. Or, hey, here they are...
Tumblr media
Foundation Pour One: Mickey Dean
Mikey’s looking for a do-over here in our world since he kinda whiffed it in his, we knew that, so during his recon he’s recruiting as he goes. We also likely all figured he’d be going after angels on the low-down, but he’s a smart cookie and he’s being thorough, injecting some diversity into his army over here. “Faithful” humans, for one - well, the ones who’d like to think themselves faithful - and also angels who walk a fine line. And then vampires, and the inference there being that we’ll have more creature features popping up for the monster squad.
Including demons.
There were multiple weird, unneeded anvil expositions in this ep, but then there was a “hmmmm” one regarding this rando demon (obnoxious as all-get-out, really grating, but Sam iced him, no worries) who comments to Cas that someone asked him to think about what he really wanted out of his life - Mikey’s shtick/the speech he’s giving - so it makes me think one of two things:
(1) Coincidence
(2) Not coincidence; Mikey, via his demon buddy - buddies? who knows - got wind that Cas had feelers out, and he sent this dude to be the one that answered the call, and ideally kill TFW
Does it matter? No. Just would be another knife-twister for Mikey to toss out at Sam and Cas when the throwdown happens in (checks watch) next ep.
ETA: forgot to add my witty “speaking of knife twister” comment before - one of the weird exposition anvils was the pointed bringing up of the fact that the archangel blade... what, killed? ejected?... Lu-Lu without 86′ing Nick, though if that applies to Dean’s Michael situation... I mean..... fuck if I know.  Put it this way: if it’s a hint, it was clunky; if it’s a misdirect, it was clunky. Anyhow, it was my understanding that the whatever-something-blah-blah that Crowley did essentially made Nick into the walking dead.
Hey, speaking of again....
Foundation Pour Two: Nick
I am cool with this either way, Nick or Luci, Pellegrino’s a great actor and I’m pleased he’s still around. This could be good for both Nick and Sam, let them work out some shit as they have a Lu-Lu reign of terror in common. Phenomenal scene - because it was kept simple - with MP and JP.
Here’s my thing - archangel grace residuals, amirite? And that shit must regen better than red blood cells, for a recent receipt see last season, re: both Gabe and Lu getting some real drainage done and popping back like bosses in pretty short order. Archangel grace is no joke.
So I would reeeeeally like to see it be legit Nick for awhile, maybe even bond with folks - hell, bond with Dean, think about it - but that slowly Luci creeps back in, and that they let Pellegrino play it so smoothly, no slip-ups, no showing us in dreams or hallucinations or voices, just boo-yah, it comes out that Lucifer’s “grown back” at a critical moment. I would really like it if that reveal came out in the middle of a bad fight, and he saves them, because now Mikey’s our primary big bad, and Luci can.... heh.... spread his wings.
OR, I’d also be okay with the entire thing being a long con, with Jack’s grace having saved Luci. They showed some Nick flashbacks, because Dabb never met an anvil he didn’t wanna drop (we get that he was traumatized, we’re not cro-magnon, we didn’t need a flashback, if someone is tuning into a 14 year old show for the first time tonight, they’re just gonna have to fucking tread water and catch up), but someone could explain that away as Nick residuals while the grace was regenerating. Either way would be interesting.
Not a word of that will happen.
Foundation Pour Three: Jack
This isn’t anything, this is sophomore creative writing, you likely had this in your mind at last season’s end, how it’s gonna be weird for him to adapt without his powers. I can think of a million different ways that they can take this, but I’m sure they’ll do something boring like a do-over of Sam’s downing demon blood thing, except with Jack it’ll be huffing grace.
Lookit, I like Jack to the extent that he’s giving Cas something to do/giving Misha something to do. Otherwise.... meh. Whatevs. I’m not watching this show for teen angst. The only reason I’d have perhaps watched Wayward would be for Jody and Donna, but if it turned into one of the other zillion shows on CW, then thanks-no-thanks. But the kid’s a really good actor, so... again, “meh” on Jack. Cas is a good dad, that’s why I like Jack being around.
Foundation Pour Four: Sam
These are just blips in terms of ep time, but two things here - Sam’s behaving as a natural leader, just doing it vs. it being made a big deal that he’s doing it (waves at 12!), and I also like that he’s just getting down to business when it comes to finding Dean - it’s a greeeeeaaaat contrast to the palpable panic underneath the surface that we saw with the Demon Dean situation. Both were/are correct. Sam had the normal reaction then, and his reaction now follows suit, he’s been through the shit, he’s more calloused. Points to Padalecki. Also points for Sam’s big dick action, declaring there’s not gonna be a new king of hell, so they can all screw off or else they’ll have to deal with him. #cue the smoke outs
Foundation Pour Five:
They are setting up a Bobby boner for Mary.
Foundation Pour Six:
Seems like Ketch will return! [yaaaaaaay! Davey boy’s a gem] And it sounds like he’s actually helping, so I like this. It was necessary exposition that was fairly fluidly done, and I am assuming it was a necessary set-up for future Ketch because not everybody was accounted for (Rowena, Charlie, etc.) like goddamned Mouseketeer roll call from the finale (or next-to-last ep in 13, can’t recall, whatever, it was baaaad).
Tiny pours:
----> They’re wanting us to be familiar with all the new hunters.
I could not possibly care less.
They super-de-dooperty want us to care about this one chick who has perpetually wide doe eyes, guess what: I couldn’t possibly care less part deux about poor man’s Shelley Duvall. I have no idea how she survived more than five minutes in apocaland, she legit looked at Mary tonight and basically asked how a knife worked, hand to god. They’ll end up killing her, it’s fine.
----> They want us to care about Anael/Sister Jo, a.k.a. Not My Anna/Not My Jo.
I care even less about this character than I do about the aforementioned hunters, I have no idea what purpose she serves, I know she’s done things but nothing that was truly of import that couldn’t have been written another way/the other characters could’ve gotten to the same point another way
That’s about it, hopefully we get the ball rolling next week because this was sufficient groundwork, they can move on. 👍

My Life as a Background Character: Matt’s Fangtastic Date
Greendale is a place where fantastic, out of the ordinary things happen every day. This seemingly sleepy little place is home to strange occurrences and even stranger people. So strange, in fact, that an entire subset of people exists that we refer to only as mutants. Due to a chemical spill that left part of the town with strange mutations and abilities. Since then we have seen the rise of heroes and villains, as well as groups that wish to see all of their kind dead. The social climate here has definitely changed as a result, with neighbors and friends existing on opposite ends of the debate. Greendale has a lot of problems now.
Another thing that Greendale has is a high number of disappearances. Within the last year, there have been at least twenty people and even more pets that have vanished without a trace. Many try and blame this on the mutants and use it as even more fodder for their hate-filled campaigns, but the disappearances started long before the chemical leak. The mutants are not the only strange thing about Greendale. There is something else, something much more sinister hiding below the surface.
I was walking home from Eliza’s house one night after eating dinner with her and her father. He had made some overly complicated vegetable dish so that he could show off how fast he was at working with his four arms. I often went over there to speak to the pair of them about their adventures as the town’s superhero pair, being the only one that knows their secret. It was just after eight when I decided it was time to walk home. My parents had a strictly enforced nine o’clock curfew in place for me, especially with all of the crazy occurrences that have been happening lately.
I was walking down Jefferson Street, just past Chuck’s corner store when it happened. Jefferson Street is a long narrow street filled with nearly identical homes, all with their own fenced in yards. Usually, the Davis’ dog, Roscoe, can be heard barking long before I turn the corner, but tonight all I hear are crickets chirping in the darkness. I continue my trek up the street towards the Davis’ house ready to see my favorite little buddy jumping on the fence in greeting. But when I get there Roscoe is nowhere to be found. Instead, I see little patches of blue fur lining the grass and sidewalk. Roscoe’s fur.
Walking home alone suddenly seems much more dangerous than it did a few moments ago. I try to ignore my concern for the little mutant dog and continue up the street towards home. I still have several blocks to go before I reach my destination. Every sound I hear makes me jump and quicken my steps. A cat screeching in the dark makes me want to jump out of my skin. I finally hit Main Street and my fear starts to wane as more and more street lamps click on. That’s when I hear it. In between two small businesses is a barely lit alleyway, and coming from it I hear the sound of whimpering. Common sense tells me to just leave. To go home and lock the door. There’s blue fur on the ground in front of me. I go down the alleyway hoping that my mind is just creating worst-case scenarios and that I’ll find that stupid dog unharmed. Down the alley, there is a dumpster with a small pile of boxes beside it. The whining and whimpering seems to be coming from the stacks of cardboard. I begin to move the boxes to get to the source of the sound and soon I have found him. Roscoe. Except he is not unharmed as I foolishly hoped. There, where his collar used to be, are two small holes. His blue fur is streaked with blood. He continues to look at me as he whimpers, obviously in pain. I have to call for help!
I take out my cell phone and begin to call Eliza. Having a flying superhero for a best friend can come in handy in an emergency. I could just hear the dial tone when suddenly I am thrown against the wall by an unseen force. My phone is ripped from my hands and I suddenly find myself staring into a pair of red eyes. Red. The color streaks his face and stains his lips. His skin is pale and his hands, which are pinning me against the walls, are cold. I barely hear Roscoe whimpering from his place on the ground over the sound of my own heart racing. Is this what it feels like to stare death in the face? I hope not.
He stares down at me with a look in his eyes that almost looks like fear. What does he have to be afraid of in the situation? I’m the one being held against a wall by an actual vampire while his most recent victim lies on the ground near my feet! This is definitely not how I envisioned my own death. I planned on being old and grey holding the hand of my husband, Daniel Winters, as we fade out together like in some cheesy romance movie. Instead, I’m going to die in a dirty alleyway beside a dumpster. A blue dog as my only companion. On the plus side, if I die tonight I don’t have to take the geometry test tomorrow. Silver linings.
He opens his mouth to speak to reveal sharp fangs and more blood drips down his face. I cringe and look away, unable to handle the site.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” he says in a frantic whisper. My eyes are screwed shut as wait for the piercing feeling of his fangs entering my neck. Maybe I have seen too many horror movies, but considering the situation I am currently in I feel my assumptions are accurate. I hear him sigh, and his grip loosens slightly. This is my chance! Using every last bit of courage and strength I have, I kick him away and take off running away from the alley leaving Roscoe and the terrifying creature behind. He doesn’t follow.
The next day I find myself sitting in class, a test in front of me with numbers that seem to swim across the page. I did not sleep last night for fear of him coming to find me. Geometry is even more impossible than usual. I look around the room, seeing Matt concentrating on his test at the desk beside me. He was really chipper when he entered class today and if I had even an ounce of energy today I probably would’ve asked him, instead his peppiness is annoying. How can he be so happy when vampires are apparently roaming the streets, ready to suck our blood? I want to ask, to tell him what I saw but I’m afraid he won’t believe me, or worse that he’ll assume I ran into a mutant and started crying monster. It happens and is a real problem Greendale faces and I don’t want people thinking that I believe that rhetoric. For all I know that was a mutant I saw last night, but most mutants do not go around drinking the blood from little doggies in back alleys. If he is a mutant, then he is a dangerous one that needs to be stopped. I plan on telling Eliza later. If anyone can do something to fix this it will be her. She fights wayward mutants on a regular basis so a vampire should not be much of a challenge. Maybe she will even use a wooden stake to do it?
The bell rings and I realize that I had drifted off and left over half of my test blank. Great. Well, there goes my GPA. I gather my stuff and shuffle to the door to walk with Matt to our next class. He’s talking animatedly with Georgie Kline about the test, apparently, he actually feels good about this one. Is this what it feels like to want to stab your best friend? He looks at me and tries to get me in on the conversation, which is honestly the last thing I want right now.
“So how do you think you did?” Matt asks with a smile. I want to smack it right off of his face. Instead, I just groan. Maybe I was attacked by a zombie last night and not a vampire because I certainly feel like one right now.
“That bad?” he says with a grimace, Georgie wearing a similar expression beside him. “I’m sure it will be okay. Mrs. Womack is usually pretty nice about these things and I’m sure if you ask you can get some extra credit or something.”
“Yeah! And it was only one test so it’ll be fine” Georgie says. I just groan again. I need sleep, not a pep talk. Georgie excuses herself as we approach the lockers. Matt and I are lucky to have ours beside each other. He quietly opens his and begins digging around while I stare blankly at my combination lock. This is going to be a long day. I hear the rattling of a pill bottle beside my head and turn to see Matt grinning with headache medicine in one hand and a bottle of water in the other. Forget what I said about wanting to stab him, he’s the best friend a girl could have!
“I figured you could use these, seeing as you are half dead today,” he says while handing them over to me. I take them from his hands and quickly swallow them. Matt has begun fiddling with my lock and within seconds it swings open. Normally I would question how he knew my combination, but today I am just grateful.
“Try to wake up please, I have some amazing news to tell you but it’s no fun if you can’t get properly excited for me,” Matt says as he gathers his things and walks away, heading to his next class. I quickly get what I need and follow. Hopefully, the pills kick in soon.
Classes continue in this manner until lunch time where we join Eliza and the others at our usual table. I have managed to wake up a little but now I keep remembering all of the little details of the attack last night. The way the blood dripped down his pale face as his blond colored hair seemed to shine even in the darkness. Maybe that one author got it right, maybe vampires do sparkle? I find myself actually smiling at the thought of the one I encountered last night covered in glitter. That would definitely make him less scary than the covered in dog blood look he was rocking last night.
Once everyone had gathered at the table Matt stood up and cleared his throat, making everyone at our little table stop and listen. “I have an important announcement to make! So hear ye hear ye!” he says being dramatic as possible. He pauses in an attempt to increase our anticipation. Everyone turns away and goes back to their own conversations instead. “Fine. Fine. I won’t make you wait any longer! Over the weekend I, Matthew James Garrett, met someone!”
“That’s great Matt! Where’d you meet him? What’s his name?” I say excitedly. This is a big deal for Matt. He has had a hard time in the very limited dating pool he has here in Greendale, so for him to find a guy he’s willing to talk about means that he’s actually serious about this one.
“His name is Evan and I met him at Gina’s, you know the little cafe that stays open all night? Well, it was like ten and I decided to go get some coffee to help me get through the literature homework. Mom was still at work so she wouldn’t notice if I left. I walked in and there he was! Pale, blond, and gorgeous with brown eyes! I decided to drink my coffee there and we ended up talking until after midnight. By the way, I’m grounded for a week, but once the week is up we agreed to meet up for an actual date!”
“That’s great Matt! He sounds great!” I say but I also feel the need to reprimand him for being out so late, especially after last night, “Just try not to go out so late at night by yourself, you never know who or what is out there.” He gives me a strange look before laughing at what I said, the rest of our friends joining in. Of course they wouldn’t take me seriously, I habitually stay out much later than I should. Things are different now though and I want the people I care about to be safe. Honestly, now that I think about it, it’s strange that we haven’t all been given stricter curfews and more rules since the factory incident. A guy set half of the town on fire a few weeks ago! What are our parents thinking letting us go out alone at night?!
The bell rings and we all gather our things to leave the cafeteria. Matt and Eliza are staring down at his phone and talking in hushed tones. I walk over and look at the phone, noticing that it is open to someone’s online profile. My eyes take in the picture and I feel my blood run cold. There on the screen, beside the name Evan Doyle, is the vampire. His eyes are brown in the picture and his skin is less pale, but I know it is him. I guess the myth about vampires not showing up on film is a lie, or maybe he really is a mutant. Either way, one fact remains: My friend has a date with a vampire.
School had finally ended for the day and I am headed back to my house with Eliza. I need to tell her about the vampire and about how much danger our dear friend Matt is truly in. I know she will listen to me and help me come up with a solution. Matt was so happy at lunch and I don’t want to take that away from him, but his safety comes first. I just don’t know how to tell him without seeming crazy. Why do all of my friends have to end up in crazy situations like this? One’s a superhero and now the other is dating the undead. This is not normal!
I quickly lead Eliza up the stairs, not even stopping to greet my mom on the way up. I need to talk to someone before I burst. I secure the door behind us and press my back to it. Eliza is staring at me like I’ve gone insane. Hopefully what I’m about to say doesn’t confirm that I have. “Okay. Are you going to explain why you are acting so weird and why you made me come all the way over here instead of going home? I’ve got like a million assignments to catch up on, so this better be good.”
I stare at her for a moment, trying to find the words. I can tell she’s getting irritated with me. She huffs and starts to walk towards the door. Prepared to push me out of the way so she can leave. I understand her irritation, as a superhero, her time is very limited. As she’s about to turn the doorknob I find myself shouting, “Matt’s new boyfriend is a vampire!”
She pauses and turns to stare at me. “What are you talking about?” she says coldly. She doesn’t believe me. I soon find myself babbling, recounting all that happened last night while pacing around the room. She listens intently, only interrupting when I mention the fate of poor Roscoe. When I finish my story I collapse on the bed and she walks over to sit beside me.
“Are you sure that it was the same guy?” she asks hopefully. I wish I could give her the answer she wants.
“Yes. I’m sure. His eyes are brown in the picture but that’s the only real difference that I see.”
She sighs and leans back to lie beside me. “What do we do?” she asks. I wish I had an answer.
The rest of the week goes by quickly. I keep trying to get Matt alone but every attempt ends in failure. He is never alone at school, constantly telling anyone that will listen about his date.  If he wasn’t grounded I would visit him at home, but that isn’t an option at the moment. Eliza has begun doing nighttime patrols to see if there are any more sightings. There have been none. It’s Saturday and Matt’s big date is tonight. His weeklong grounding has been lifted. Eliza and I head over to his house, planning to finally tell him. Hopefully, he listens. We arrive and he excitedly takes us upstairs to help him pick out what to wear. I’m nervous and I can tell Eliza is too. He finally decides on an outfit, a red shirt and some nice jeans. Red. How appropriate.
He finally sits down with us and starts to talk about Evan. About how they have been talking and messaging each other all week and how great he is. We need to tell him. I need to tell him. He’s in the middle of retelling a joke that Evan apparently sent him when I can’t take it anymore. “Your boyfriend is a vampire!” I shout, “A blood-sucking creature of the night!”
The room goes quiet after my outburst. Eliza looks like she wants to hit me. While I admit that was not the most eloquent way of telling him, at least I said it. Matt starts laughing.  “That’s a good one, Annie!” he says through his chuckles, “a vampire? Really? Someone has been watching too much television lately.”
“I’m not joking! I saw him in an alley covered in blood! He ate Roscoe! You have to believe me.”
“First off, who is Roscoe? And second, what are you talking about? Covered in blood? You haven’t even met him yet!” Matt says with obvious anger and confusion. I begin to tell my story again, with Eliza interjecting occasionally. When I finish Matt is quiet and is looking down at the floor. He isn’t taking this well and I don’t blame him. He thought he finally found a decent guy in Greendale only to find out that he’s been talking to a monster. He’s realizing just what Evan meant when he asked him to dinner.
“I can’t believe you would go this far to keep me from going out with someone,” he says with malice in his voice. “I thought you were my friends, but I guess I was wrong.”
“Matt, we are not lying! We are trying to protect you! You are our best friend and we just want what is best for you!” I say with tears streaming down my face. Why won’t believe me? He’s known me for years; he should know that I would never try to hurt him unless there was a good reason.
“Get out,” he says coldly. “Just go.” I can feel my heart breaking. He doesn’t believe me and now I’ve ruined one of the best friendships I’ve ever had. Even worse is that I might lose even more than that if he goes on that date tonight. Eliza grabs my hand and drags me out of the house. Matt says nothing as we walk out. His date starts in a few hours and I failed.
Eliza and I decide to stake out the date. If Matt won’t listen then at least we can be there if anything happens. We are stationed across the street from the restaurant with a pair of binoculars. Matt and Evan have just arrived at the door and are being led inside. Seeing him now in person confirms what I already knew. It is definitely the same person.  Matt has a huge smile on his face and is laughing at something Evan said. Apparently, vampires can be funny. I wonder if he’ll still be laughing when Evan’s teeth are piercing his throat later.
The date seems to be going well and they stay in the restaurant for a couple of hours before finally getting up to leave. They emerge from the restaurant holding hands. If he wasn’t a killer I would say they make a cute couple. I gather my surveillance equipment so that I can move to a new location. Eliza, wearing her blue super suit, takes to the air. She can get a better vantage point from above and if she gets caught she can just say Dragonfly was patrolling the area. Thankfully Matt doesn’t know about her double life yet. We have our phones so we can keep in contact. I trail them from the ground, hiding behind plants and in alleys the entire way. Definitely one of the stranger things I’ve found myself doing, but if it’s for a friend I will do whatever it takes! They stop and head inside of the movie theater. Eliza rushes down beside me. We have to follow them inside. Movie theaters are dark and the perfect place to hide nefarious activities. Eliza quickly covers her suit and removes the mask. We walk up to the window to get tickets, trying to keep a low profile. We manage to make it into the movie and sit in the back, several rows behind our targets. They seem to be having a lot of fun. It’s a shame we have to end it.
The movie we are watching is some ridiculous horror flick about a doll that comes to life. Interesting that these two would choose a horror movie to watch, though I suspect Matt did that on purpose expecting his date to be easily scared. I swear that boy is a walking cliché sometimes. From where I sit I can see his arm around the back of Evan’s seat. I roll my eyes at the predictability and Eliza is trying to stifle giggles beside me. The movie reaches its climax and I find myself getting invested, so much so that I stop paying attention to our little couple. The lights come on as the credit roll. We were supposed to exit before the movie ended so we wouldn’t be seen. Too late. Matt has noticed us and he looks like he could murder us. The mission is a failure.
He grabs me by the arm and drags me out to the lobby, Eliza and Evan following. He turns me to look at him before he starts yelling. I see Evan behind him with a look of absolute terror on his face. I think he recognizes me. Good. “I can’t believe you! Just stay out of my business and leave us alone.” Matt says, but I’m paying him very little attention. Eliza is speaking to Evan, but his eyes keep wandering to me. He knows that I know.
“Why don’t you tell him the truth, Evan? If that is your real name?” I remark, ignoring Matt’s anger for the time being.
          “Annette stop!” Matt shouts.
“You recognize me. I know you do. You had me pinned against a wall earlier this week!” I say accusingly. Evan visibly stiffens his eyes looking back and forth between Matt and I. Matt reaches over and grabs his arm, leading him away with a glare and an angry scoff.
“Don’t you dare follow us.” He says over his shoulder as they walk away. Eliza and I just look at each other before taking off after them.
We find ourselves traveling down Main street towards the alleyway where this all began. Evan apparently has a favorite dinner location. Eliza flies us both up to the roof of one of the building so we can look down and watch. They are talking in hushed tones. Matt seems to be apologizing for my behavior earlier. Evan stops him though. We can only hear bits and pieces of the conversation, but when even flashes his fangs I knew it was time to intervene. Eliza and I jump down in between our friend and his would-be attacker, preparing to fight if need be. Evan jumps back in surprise and Matt is visibly shaking behind us. “Don’t worry Matt we are here to protect you!” Eliza says as I try to calm him down.
“I told you not to follow,” Matt says quietly. “I’m okay. Just leave. Please.”
“But Matt!” I say trying to talk some sense into him. This is a real-life vampire we are talking about.
“He won’t hurt me,” Matt whispers as he pushes me aside. “He isn’t dangerous. I know he’s not. So please go home and let me finish my date.” He grabs Evans hand and starts walking out of the alley. Evan looks just as surprised as us as he is led away. Eliza and I stand in the alley, shock on our faces. Matt chose to continue his date with a vampire.
Matt does not respond to any of our messages the next day; however, he does change his relationship status online. He’s alive. He also has a vampire boyfriend now apparently. I want to be happy for him but I’m still scared. Evan may not intend to hurt Matt, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t dangerous. I make it to second-period geometry. Matt is there but he hasn’t looked my way at all. I guess I did end up ruining our friendship. The bell rings and I head to my locker hoping to talk to him. Matt continues down the hall.  This feels awful and I want to apologize, but also I don’t feel like I should have to. I was right about Evan, even if I was wrong about his intentions. I did see him in that alleyway that night. I did see Roscoe’s blood on his face. I needed to save Matt from the same fate.
Lunch has finally arrived and I expect to see an empty spot at our table where Matt usually sits. Instead, I hear him laughing and see him and Eliza laughing about something on his phone. I hesitantly approach and set my stuff down. Matt grins at me and hands me his phone. On it is an open chat with Evan. The two of them have apparently been sending vampire puns and jokes to each other. The most recent one, from Evan, is a picture of him with a cup of coffee with the words ‘don’t worry, it’s decoffinated’ written over it in red lettering. I found myself giggling along with my friends as I hand the phone back. Everything seems to be okay. We laugh and joke throughout lunch and Matt explains what happened after we left. Apparently, Evan has only been a vampire for a few months. He got attacked while visiting the city and found himself with red eyes and need for blood. So far he’s been dealing with this craving with a diet of very rare meat products and the occasional stray animal. Matt explains that the night I caught Evan red-fanged, Roscoe had already escaped the fence. He apparently cut himself on the way out and Evan followed the scent. He had no idea that Roscoe had an owner. I remember the little tufts of blue fur on the fence and at the entrance to the alley. It made sense. The stupid dog hurt himself in a ridiculous escape attempt. Evan saw an opportunity, and though I am not sure how okay I am with the idea of him sucking the life out of little cats and dogs all over the city, I can understand why. Matt invited me and Eliza to hang out with him and Evan later this week so that we can get to know him properly and so that I can apologize for outing him without his permission. I have my friend back and I couldn’t be happier.
I went to Eliza’s again that night to study for a geometry make-up exam. Mrs. Womack took pity on me and is letting me retake the test. On the way home I stop in front of the Davis’ empty backyard remembering the stupid blue dog that used to inhabit it. Mrs. Davis comes outside and smiles and waves at me as she holds the door open behind her. A little blue creature comes running outside and starts jumping on the fence. Roscoe is alive! I find myself laughing and petting the little menace as he excitedly licks at my hands. If I notice that his teeth seem a little sharper than before, I don’t say anything. Some secrets are best left unsaid.
I continue my trek home, passing the dark alleyways and watching as the streetlights come on. I am just an ordinary high school student heading home after a long day. My life is still ordinary. There is nothing that special about me. Those around me, however, have a much more interesting story to tell. My best friend is a superhero, fighting crime and saving the world. My other best friend is dating a vampire. Sometimes I’m glad nothing exciting happens to me. I think I’d rather just stay in the background for now.

Blood Candy: Chapter 8
When I came to, I found myself in a sickeningly familiar office.
I was bound to the same chair I was in yesterday using the same thick rope Seb used to choke me.
“Hope the ride wasn’t too bumpy,” Jasper Kermit’s voice said. He entered the room and crouched down to my level with an arrogant smile. “Took you long enough. Though…” He frowned. “You’re not nearly as bloody as I expected you to be.” Jasper’s smile suddenly returned, only more cheerful this time. “Good! Means your little friend Sebs is actually marginally obedient and isn’t a greedy little leech.”
“Let me go!” I demanded as Jasper got up to go to his syringe cabinet. “I’ve done nothing to you!”
“I don’t exactly care,” he said, “but thanks for reminding me.”
“I hope you realize I only took your stupid vampire candy just to be polite,” I snapped at him. “I should’ve just turned it down and saved myself the trouble.”
Jasper laughed, a cruel and condescending sound. He crouched down to my level, syringe in hand.
“You really think I would’ve given you that choice?” he taunted. “God, you are so naive. It’s embarrassing, really.”
My heart was thundering. I was gonna die here, I thought. I’ve been kidnapped, I can’t call anyone for help, he’s gonna drain all of my blood and feed it to his army of vampires, he’s gonna—
Suddenly, Jasper started poking needles in the back of both hands, then in both wrists, and in both arms. Though the pain of blood works didn’t affect me as much anymore, having six needles stuck in my veins at once, plus the knowledge that these six needles were going to drain me of all my blood and kill me, made the entire process much more painful.
Finally, he hooked all six needles up to one longer-than-normal syringe, with several others on the sidelines.
“Oh…hold on,” Jasper said with a smirk. “Before we start, there’s one last thing I need to do.”
He grabbed a nearby roll of duct tape, ripped off a piece, and taped it over my mouth.
“Wouldn’t want a noise complaint, now, would we?” Jasper taunted. He wore a sadistic grin on his face...revealing fangs in his mouth and confirming any remaining suspicions. “Now we can get started…”
Suddenly, a fire alarm went off in the building.
“Wh-what the hell…?” he said, then turned to me, an annoyed look on his face. “I’m gonna go check out the alarm. Fortunately, you can’t really escape, so I guess enjoy the last minutes of your life.” He stood up and walked out the door.
I tried to ignore the pain in my arms and wrists as I tried to figure out a way out of the situation.
Chances are, I thought to myself, that I wouldn’t be able to escape before Jasper gets back. And if he sees that I tried to, then he’s probably gonna kill me even faster. I could sit here and die, and if/whenever Sebs snaps outta this, then he’ll have to live with the knowledge that he’s the reason his ‘best friend in the whole wide world since kindergarten’ is now six feet under with empty blood vessels and ghostly white skin. And you know what? I’m okay with that. I hope Seb feels like the scum of the earth for this—
Wait. No. Why am I blaming him? This is Jasper’s fault. He was the one who spiked the candy—with what?—he probably enlisted Seb to choke the consciousness outta me, and he is the person draining my blood. Not Seb. He didn’t want this. He wants me alive, and every remaining conscious part of him is probably screaming at himself mentally for putting me in harm’s way—
“Dakota!” a familiar voice called. I looked up to find Akira, Kaveri, and the kid from the other day, Oliver. He had a bandage wrapped around his shoulder with a bloody spot in the middle.
“Hey! Finally!” I cheered. “GET THESE THINGS OUTTA ME NOW.”
“Alright, alright, geez,” Akira said. “You act like you’re dying.” She and Oliver began gently taking the needles out of my veins. The two of them raided the desk for bandages, and put them on my wrists and arms.
“How did you guys find me?” I asked.
“This hospital is one of the main headquarters of Clueham’s top vampire guild,” Kaveri explained as she was cutting me loose. “It’s also the only local hospital--because the Clueham officials all share a single brain cell--so I figured you’d be trapped here.”
“Oliver—or Oli, for short—is Jasper’s younger brother,” Akira said. “He was in the waiting room crying, and I asked him what was up. He told me about his brother who caused both the small bleeding hole in his shoulder and Seb’s newfound insanity. I triggered the fire alarm to cause a distraction, and boom!” She pulled out the last needle as Kaveri finished freeing me. “Here we are.”
“Akira, you genius,” I said. “Let’s go.”
“Let’s,” Oliver said, “before Jasper gets back. Exit’s just upstairs—“
“No,” I said. “I need to face Jasper.”
Oliver’s eyes widened with fear.
“A-are you crazy?!” he cried. “He’ll kill you! And if he doesn’t, then Sebastian will!”
“Seb wouldn’t kill me,” I said with a smile. “Hurt me, probably, but he could never bring himself to actually kill me.”
“I’m not so sure about that.” He pulled out his phone. “Can you set up some barricades?” he asked Akira and Kaveri.
He closed and locked the door, then opened up a video. Both girls nodded as they pushed the two chairs in the room in front of the door. Then, Oliver pressed play.
The video showed Jasper in his office, experimenting with what I assumed to be blood and a variety of chemicals. The camera was positions a little higher up, but not high enough to be security footage.
“All the vampires in the facility—Jasper included—busted the security cameras,” Oli explained, “so I set one up behind the books in his office.
What if he pulled out a book from that shelf?” Akira asked.
“Well, he didn’t. He doesn’t read anymore; they’re just for show.”
Suddenly, Seb stormed into the office in the video. Jasper whirled his head around, a confused expression on his face. However, it quickly turned into a smile.
“Oh, you must be Sebastian Briggs,” Jasper said. “Yeah, you definitely came here before. I recognize you from our database. How’s it going?”
Silence. We could only see the back view of Seb, so if he was smiling, we couldn’t tell.
Seb pointed to his neck with a shaky finger. “…m-make me…one of you…”
“Ohhhh…” Jasper said, nodding. “I see.” Suddenly, he gave Seb a slight glare. “Wait…no, no no no. I just…I can’t really do that, see. I don’t exactly know if I trust you to not be a filthy leech like some of the other greedy…subjects from before.” Jasper stood up. “See, you’re just the errand boy. You get Dakota for me, and once you do, then you get to start your real job. Got it?
Seb nodded.
“…b-but…I must…feed…like you…”
Jasper sighed.
“You made a candy that gives people bloodlust,” Jasper murmured to himself. “Of course this was gonna happen.” He let out a sigh, and leaned back in his chair.
“You know what?” Jasper said. “Sure. I’m gonna have to convert you anyways.” He stood up and grabbed something from his drawer. “But biting’s just…so informal, y’know? You’re my colleague now, I can’t just bite you on the neck like you’re some random on the street. Don’t worry. I got just the thing for that.”
Jasper pulled out a small dagger-like device. The blade resembled that of the tooth of a wild beast, and the metal handle had dark red markings on it.
“This little thingy allows me to give people the vampiric curse without biting them. Originally made for a vampire who got her teeth knocked out. Gimme your neck.”
Seb did, obeying Jasper with such blindness that it caused my blood to boil. I watched as Jasper held the other side of his errand boy’s neck as he made a decent-sized slit along his throat. As he did, the dagger’s markings lit up. When he was done, Seb was on his knees, holding the area where he was cut. Finally, he stood up, as Jasper gave a triumphant smile.
“Perfect,” he said. “Sebastian, you work for me from now on.” He took out a black long coat from his closet. “Put this on. There’s a small mirror over there if you wanna check yourself out.”
Seb put on the coat, and went over to a nearby mirror—which just happened to be on the bookshelf. That’s when Seb noticed the camera.
The video cut off just after he looked at it.
“I was controlling the camera from my phone,” Oliver explained. “So I turned it off right as I saw Sebastian looking at me.”
“…so, he’s a vampire now?” I said.
Kaveri nodded solemnly. I looked over at her.
“Can we cure him?” I asked.
“We can probably cure his bloodlust,” she said, “but if you want him to, well, not be a vampire…you’re gonna have to kill him.”
I sighed.
“Guess I’ll just have a vampire for a friend,” I said.
“Once this is over,” Akira said, “I want at least 90% of the credit for this conspiracy.”
“You’re still gonna make a post about this?!” Kaveri cried. “This isn’t a game, y’know. This is an actual threat.”
Akira just shrugged.
“Gotta keep the hustle goin’,” she replied simply. “Besides...best to keep the people informed, right? They might take it a bit less seriously since it’s a ‘conspiracy,’ but they’ll believe us. They always do.”
“Let’s actually get this done first,” I reminded her. “But yeah, I can respect that. Don’t want anyone else going through what we’ve been through.”
Suddenly, a loud BANG came from outside the door.
“DAKOTA!” Jasper yelled from the other side of the door. “I better not find you untied in there, or I will MURDER YOU.”
Akira rummaged through the drawers and shelves, then finally found and grabbed a reflex hammer. She motioned for Oliver and I to open the door. Reluctantly, we both stood on the other side of the door, out of sight, and pulled down the barricades. Jasper stormed into the room, just as Akira threw the reflex hammer at his head with a sickening thud. Jasper stumbled backward as Kaveri rammed into him, shoving him out of the threshold and trying to stick a dagger in his arm. However, Jasper kicked her out of the way.
“You three go on ahead!” Kaveri yelled. “I’ll deal with this vampire.”
“Can you handle him?” I asked. “You just have a knife; is that gonna--”
That’s when I noticed the other sheath on her belt. It was shorter than a full sword, but longer than her knife. The hilt appeared to be dark and wooden, and I could only pray that it was a stake.
“Yes,” Kaveri called, holding Jasper back. “Yes it will.”
I nodded, and took off down the hallway with my friends.
“Alright,” Akira said as we ran down the hallway. “Here’s the plan: Oli knows where the secret files are...don’t ask me how, he just does. I was confused too. Anyway, he’ll take us there and we’ll figure out what this whole candy situation is about.”
“You guys do that,” I replied. “I’m gonna try and subdue Seb, then you guys come back up when you have a cure.”
“You’ll be okay, right?” she asked. “Can you take Seb by yourself?”
“He and I used to play fight when we were younger,” I explained. “If I could take him then, I certainly can now.”
Akira sighed.
“Fine,” she said. “If there’s any trouble, find a hiding spot and text me ASAP. Worst comes to worst, we can abandon ship and find Seb another day. He’ll likely come to us, anyhow.”
“No. I’m ending this now.” We stopped at a stairwell.
“This is it,” Oli said, holding my hand. “Be safe, Dakota.”
“I will,” I said. “I have to be.” With that, we went our separate ways.
