10. — nostalgia, Aokaga?
10) nostalgia + AoKaga
The Bulls’ first stringers were good that year. People were saying it felt like 1984 all over again, and others claimed that was an exaggeration; but nevertheless, they had a new ace with ridiculous jumping power, and the whole team started to work around his skills and hoping it would be enough to win the Championship.
Aomine thought it was dumb. Championships were won by teams, not individuals, but apparently, the Bulls’ management was desperate enough to once again put all their hopes and money into this new person with enough anonimity that they all just referred him to as “The Rookie”.
The Chicago Bulls marched in through the gate opposite from them just as soon as he obediently took his place on the bench. One of their shortest players had this really vibrant, familiar mop of red hair which matched the red of his jersey, and Aomine immediately locked eyes with him over the court.
They both yelped.
‘So,’ Kagami started, slipping into the booth across from him, his tray packed with a mountain of burgers. ‘how do you like the States?’
‘It’s big.’ Aomine murmured around the straw of his XXL sized Coke. He could already feel the sugar rush coming in, so he put it down before he’d get into explaining. ‘I thought people in movies took planes because they’re lazy and rich, but it’s a pain in the ass to travel any other way.’
‘Yeah,’ he chuckled. ‘that’s how it is over here.’
‘And everything’s too sweet.’ Aomine made a face, glaring at his too big cup of too sugary soda. ‘And no one ever speaks Japanese.’
‘I’m here to help you with that.’ Kagami smiled, soft and sweet and reassuring. It was one of those smiles he hadn’t really shown people who weren’t very close to him: it was reserved especially for those he wanted to reassure and care for. It made Aomine nostalgic, and quite frankly... flustered.
Ah, yes. They didn’t really put an end to their relationship back then, did they?
‘Say, you want to come back to my place? For old time’s-’
‘I have a boyfriend.’ Aomine blurted out, and the air, the words, and his remaining dignity all got stuck halfway in Kagami’s throat. He swallowed them all down, offering another, much more reserved smile.
‘Good for you.’ he nodded, unwrapping another burger with numb fingers. ‘Did he watch you on the court?’
‘I mean. I guess.’ Aomine shrugged, chewing on his lower lip and pointedly avoiding Kagami’s eyes. Of course he was hoping to- ‘He’s kind of in LA right now. Playing for the Lakers and all.’
‘Another basketball player, huh? Looks like you got a type.’
‘He just happens to like the same douchebag sport we do. But he’s way better than either of us.’
‘Sounds like he’s really special.’
‘He is.’ Aomine sighed softly, his lips curving upwards ever-so-slightly over the thought of his partner. ‘Long distance sucks sometimes, but we spend every day together when we’re off-season. He’s helped me get therapy, you know? I take actual antidepressants now.’
‘He must be great.’ Kagami grinned. ‘Not even I could get you to do that.’
‘We weren’t good for each other.’
Aomine finally glanced up to look into Kagami’s eyes. He looked like he wanted to say something: we could’ve been, maybe. Or you’re wrong. Instead, he just took a deep breath, and shook his head no.
‘I’m really glad you’re happy.’ he said, sounding genuine. Aomine studied him carefully, trying to find any trace of dishonesty in his composure. ‘And it was fun to play against you again.’
‘I liked wiping the floor with you.’ Aomine smirked smugly, reveling in Kagami’s answering laugh. ‘Next time, try to play as a team. Tell your coach to stop depending on your skills alone.’
‘I never thought I would hear something like this from you, but I will do.’
‘You can thank Jonah for this as well.’
