Tommy hit 9 mil! That means more Tommy appreciation!! :D

I’ve been really appreciating Tommy’s approach to his big fanbase lately. I would have totally respected had he remained more aloof, muting stans because he found it overwhelming and keeping a healthy distance. 

But I really do admire him embracing things. He’s reportedly always nice to fans he meets irl, always letting them take pictures with him. On twitter, he created an alt which is friendly and he interacts more with fans and fanart. He’s been known to send DMs to people thanking them for being there, like he sent a long message to Sad-ist and to the person who made his favourite youtooz design for the competition, cynnosaur. And when he sees animations or music in mediasares he’s always delighted. He’s always very positive about his community, which is lovely. 

I remember in one of his chill streams, saying how it was an open, inclusive welcoming community and you can see that he believes in that. He’s spoken about wanting to make his merch really affordable and he’s also mentioned not liking BTTV as he wants his twitch to be as welcoming as possible to newcomers. Even though he personally finds twitter stressful, he’s very encouraging of fans to have their community, saying he gets it.

That said, he’s not afraid to poke fun at fans a bit too, and manages to do this in a really lighthearted way typically, rather than being mean about it. Tommy’s developed such a brand that he can tweet ‘my followers are all my friends’ and every reply gets that its ironic, giving him a jokingly sceptical response. Tommy also has this thing of speaking highly of Schlatt - who he’s always looked up to as a huge influence before backtracking and calling him ‘evil’, - because while he appreciates his fans they of course don’t control who he’s friends with.

That bit he did on Philza’s stream was also a great example of poking fun at parasocial relationships - playing the role of a creepy fan saying things like ‘You were my comfort streamer. I bought your merch. I made you fanart. I have a fourteen month sub. You have broken me, why would you do this? After not understanding him and taking a joke out of context to get upset. It was both funny and showed an unhealthy parasocial relationship. 

Anyway, all in all, I love how Tommy both really, really appreciates his fans and goes out of his way to show it. I also think its great that he isn’t afraid to poke fun at things and has an understanding of boundaries. He presents himself as a very genuine, kind person and its so cool to see him handling his fame so well even though it must be super overwhelming. Especially at such a young age.
