How I Study Anatomy

Everyone says NEVER TRACE!! THAT'S ART THEFT! Ok but we can do a little crime in the name of Learning.

Trace to learn, not to earn.

I like to take my own photos, but you can study whatever you want. Link back to original photos, and don't post copied artwork unless the artist is dead, cool with it, or both.

As always with learning, start every sketch with the intent to throw it away (trash for paper, quitting without saving for digital) This takes the pressure off and lets you make Bad Art, which is very important.

So let's make Bad Art of a Deer because I happen to have one handy

Start with a photo of your subject in a nice/neutral pose with all four feet visible. (so not like me)

Freehand copy it. Try not to stylize, focusing instead of matching proportions and pose. Don't get too detailed!

It's ok if your art looks terrible and has broken legs. I've drawn LOTS of deer so I have a leg up. Everyone's art sucks in their own eyes and here's where mine went wrong:

Either lasso-distort (recommended for beginners) or redraw a copy of your first sketch with your reference behind it (scaled to match the main body of your sketch)

Put the original and modified sketches together and compare the differences. Write it down if you want. This shows you where your eyes saw things the wrong size, so you can correct for that next time.

After learning about both deer and yourself, try freehand copying again.

Marvel at your newfound knowledge and skill!

You can stop here and move on to your real drawing, Or do another freehand-fix-compare cycle. I actually overcorrected my "draws heads too big" and veered into "heads too small."

Another note on tracing: Learning HOW to trace is more important than anything you could learn By tracing. Draw the Anatomy, not the outline. In real life, things don't have outlines, they have bones.

These are from the same shoot which is extra useful for consistency. The lines are minimal and follow where the animals joints are, and only important parts are drawn.

You won't know what Important Parts means right off the bat, which is where in-depth study comes in. You need to do learn the hard parts to do the easy parts right.

idk if anyone has talked about this but I feel like no one has pointed this out yet. 

So, this fucker right here: 

Do you know why he’s named “chocolate” and how this food is associated with this character? 

Let’s start with how chocolate is made. The cocoa tree that produces cocoa beans and ultimately chocolate is very finicky with the environment it needs to thrive in; you need a very warm, humid climate year-round where it can also be protected from strong weather like harsh sunlight and heavy winds. That’s easily done within the rainforest where the weather is naturally maintained and surrounding trees can protect the cocoa tree from weather or in farms where these trees will be grown with other trees that will provide them with the protection they need. Alternatively, you can create a warm and humid greenhouse instead where the tree can be under constant surveillance to maintain its environment. The greenhouse approach is often seen in research to find ways of growing chocolate in other places around the world and hopefully making the approach affordable and sustainable enough to use over traditional methods. 

Here’s what the lab used to cultivate cocoa trees looks like. It’s called the “International Cocoa Quarantine Centre” and is based in Britain. 

Another factor in growing a cocoa tree is elevation. Ideally, you should be between 30-300 meters (about 100 to 1000 feet) above sea level or at least under 600 meters (about 2000 feet), which is considered low elevation. In general farming, lower elevations will create sweeter fruits that can ripen faster; the downsides of farming at such a level is everything being prone to rot faster, including the plants that bear the fruits themselves (specifically their roots). Farmers in low elevation need to consider factors like lower ventilation and lack of natural drainage, which can cause rotting.  Because of how complicated the conditions for cocoa trees are, it can get costly to grow and maintain them. One way to alleviate the cost of maintaining cocoa trees (besides exploitation of workers and unsustainable farming) is by tree grafting. This technique is commonly used in creating more trees in general and especially common in the chocolate industry. Grafting involves simply taking parts of a tree and attaching it to a tree that is genetically similar and doing so helps grow new cocoa trees, control the quality of the cocoa beans, and reduce cost of production overall. 

Here are some of the things that can happen if you don’t grow your cocoa tree properly. Unfortunately, some of these issues are unavoidable; why they happen and how to prevent them remains unknown and researchers are still trying to find answers that can explain why it happens and how to prevent or resolve them. 

After years of growing and waiting for the tree to mature and produce pods, we finally have cocoa beans to harvest and make chocolate. Creating chocolate itself involves a controlled form of rotting we know too well: fermentation. Disclaimer: some say fermentation is the opposite of rotting because it prevents decay but others say fermentation is defined as a controlled form of decay while rotting is defined as uncontrolled decay. For this post, I’ll stick with the latter definition. Fermentation allows us to get stuff like alcohol, yogurt, and kimchi by breaking down items, essentially making them decay and rot, to create new items by using microorganisms like bacteria and yeast to perform the process. Before cocoa beans turn into chocolate, they need to be fermented for a certain amount of days- no more and no less than necessary. It’s not going to be like wine such that aging the product will make the quality better. Over-fermenting leads to a waste product that’s just completely rotten, moldy, and just unusable in the end. And like any type of fruit, the cocoa pod will ultimately ripen and rot after it falls off the tree if it’s not used over time. Improper fermentation will also cause mold to occur, causing the beans to rot than ferment. Mold can also be caused by moisture coming in contact with the beans. Unlike cheese or meats, the mold on cocoa beans can cause long-term health issues if consumed. What we end up getting after fermenting, roasting, and grinding the beans is a pure cocoa paste or “pure chocolate.” Once the chocolate is made, it cannot get moldy; it can develop a mold-like appearance called bloom but that’s safe to eat and technically not mold. However, if you separate the cocoa powder from the paste, that can mold if it comes in contact with water.

Look at how moldy these cocoa beans can get: 

Pure chocolate has health benefits like providing antioxidants, being a major ingredient in skincare as cocoa butter, and reduce health issues. However, the chocolate we’re all used to eating is some cocoa paste with added ingredients (milk, nuts, fillings, etc.), and these ingredients are the things that end up turning chocolate into unhealthy food. You can eat pure cocoa paste, but it wouldn’t be defined as chocolate and it won’t be as tasty; even bars labeled "70% cacao" have added ingredients to it. One particular ingredient in chocolate that is a great example of how it makes chocolate unhealthy is processed sugar. Sugar itself has addicting properties and is unhealthy for many reasons, yet it’s a huge part of why we love to eat chocolate. It’s also why we have to eat chocolate with added ingredients in small quantities despite the health benefits chocolate has- the benefits and the downsides cancel each other out (i.e. pure chocolate prevents tooth decay but sugar causes tooth decay, chocolate lowers blood pressure yet sugar contributes to health issues that can cause higher blood pressure). The development of chocolate as a sweet candy in today’s world rather than a healthy ingredient also plays into this.

Based on this info, we can see how chocolate shaped Cioccolata as a character and his Stand’s abilities. The mold and rot aspect of Green Day is easily explained with the fermentation process and how the process of chocolate is susceptible to mold up throughout. Green Day’s functionality working only when victims are underneath Cioccolata is because cocoa trees require lower elevations to thrive and how lower elevation increases chances of rot in produce. The constant surveillance and maintenance of cocoa trees in a laboratory setting can reference Cioccolata finding pleasure in recording his victims’ misery, his “research” in torturing their bodies, as well as the intense and detailed work that comes with studying and practicing medicine. The tree grafting in the chocolate industry connects to Green Day’s second ability that allows it to dismember and reassemble Cioccolata with mold. It also connects to Ciccolata’s sadistic nature when it comes to manipulating his victims’ bodies and the brutality of his Stand’s mold being able to break people’s limbs apart (think Sorbet’s 36 frames, Gelato’s possible taxidermy when he was discovered by Formaggio, and how bodies affected are easily snapped apart when mold gets on them). The dichotomy of chocolate as healthy food and junk food also relates to Cioccolata as a character who should have been good (because he’s a doctor) but does more harm instead. The role of sugar in chocolate plays into that as well, but it’s especially related to how sugar cubes are used to control Secco and Cioccolata full name in JORGE JOESTAR is Dolcio Cioccolata (literally “sweet chocolate”). Hell, I can go on about how Secco’s name has a connection to chocolate too. 

I’ve seen how characters in VA are shaped by the food they’re named after, down to their Stand abilities, so it’s nice to see that Cioccolata follows this too. Let me know if you guys have other information that can add to Cioccolata’s characterization. :)

How capitalism harms disabled & autistic people.

This topic is a long-awaited one, and something that not everyone will understand immediately. That’s okay. This post is here for you to learn from, even if you have to return to it more than once and do your own independent research in the meantime.

Before you read this, it’s probably relevant for you to know that I was raised in an anti-capitalist household. My mom has a PhD in Sociology, and her dissertation focuses heavily on the way that female re/productive labor is exploited under capitalism. She has been heavily influenced by the academic work of Silvia Federici, and Chris Knight (an anthropologist).

For over a decade, I’ve been in constant conversation with her on these issues. It has taken me an incredibly long time to fully understand everything, but now I have an understanding deep enough to debate her, educate her, and sharpen both of our knowledge. One of the key things I’ve educated her about is the way that disabled and autistic people fit into the big picture of capitalist exploitation. Now, I will do the same for you.

I think the best thing to do is to give you the general framework for understanding, and then provide you with specific examples that fit into the big picture. That way, you’ll know what you’re looking at when I give you the examples.

First, you need to know what capitalism is, and how it relates to every other system of oppression. Capitalism is an inherently authoritarian, patriarchal economic system, characterized by private ownership of the means of re/production, and the exploitation of re/productive labor to create surplus product/profit for the owners of an enterprise. Under capitalism, everyone is expected to reproduce, to create new workers. Additionally, economic growth (the creation of surplus/profit) has to be exponential, constantly increasing, in order for the system to survive. This means that the ecological boundaries of the planet are exceeded, because the Earth (coded female, of course) is assumed to have an infinite amount of resources to extract and create profit from.

This economic structure necessitates a binary reproductive class system, with reproductive females as the “working class,” and pregnancy as the labor required to produce the end product, new workers. This is why abortion is often heavily criminalized in patriarchal/capitalist societies. It is also why same-sex attracted and gender nonconforming or trans people are criminalized and stigmatized: we don’t conform to the re/productive expectations associated with our sex at birth.

Ethnicity has also been weaponized as a tool to create class categories that we now refer to as “race.” People racialized as white are afforded economic benefits. People racialized as Black are severely economically exploited. In order to fully understand the way that American capitalism developed, you have to understand slavery as the origin point. You must also understand that “race” is a tool that the ruling class employs to keep the working class divided. Because they know that if working-class white people joined forces with Black people and other POC, it would be over for them. MLK understood that, and was assasinated right after the Memphis Sanitation Strike, which was a major part of the the multiracial Poor People’s Campaign (which still exists today, btw!).

It is also important to realize that capitalism, characterized by private ownership, is not the only predatory/authoritarian/patriarchal economic system out there. There were older forms, like feudalism. And the USSR, China, and North Korea are good examples of the way that States can co-opt the role of private ownership and turn an entire country into one large corporation. It is therefore much more accurate to describe those countries as demonstrating a system called “state capitalism” rather than “communism.”

So what does all of this have to do with disabled people? And what does it have to do with autistic people specifically?

Well, under capitalism and other predatory economic systems, everyone is expected to be able to work in a manner that serves the ruling class by producing surplus/profit. If someone is not able to work at the same pace as everyone else, or perform the work required of them, they are no longer of value to the system. In an economy like this, people’s productivity is the only measure of their worth in society.

This has obvious and far-reaching implications for disabled people. So now, let’s get into the specifics that I told you I’d talk about earlier. I can’t think of a way to do this chronologically, and I don’t know how to organize everything I’m about to tell you. But hopefully you’ll be able to pick these pieces up and put them into the framework I’ve provided.

Disabled people are often killed, discarded, and left to die. This is a problem that exists worldwide, because patriarchy/capitalism are systems that exist worldwide. One notable example is the Aktion T4 program in Nazi Germany, which ended up being the precursor to the Holocaust. In this “euthanasia” program, which started in 1939 and continued until around 1945 (even though it technically ended in 1941), around 300,000 disabled people were killed across Germany, Austria, and Poland.

During this program, Hans Asperger (the man who gave Asperger Syndrome its name), saved autistic people he deemed “valuable” to society (for their ability to work under capitalist expectations), and sent other autistic people (who he saw as “unworthy of life” bc of their inability to work in the ways desired by the Third Reich) to die in gas chambers and death camps. This dark history is why the vast majority of autistic people despise the term “Asperger Syndrome,” as it promotes the idea that autistic people who conform to capitalist notions of productivity and intelligence are inherently superior to (and more worthy of life than) autistic people who can’t or don’t conform to those standards.

And you know how I talked earlier about how patriarchy/capitalism want everyone to reproduce? Well, the main exception to that rule is disabled people, because disability is often genetic and inheritable. The system hates it when more “defective” workers are produced. So, beginning in the United States around the 1910s and continuing into the present day, forced sterilization of disabled people became commonplace. Between 1909 and 1963, there were around 20,000 forced sterilizations in California alone.

The main reason given for these eugenics practices was to save money and limit the amount of resources spent on caring for “undesirable” people. Because after all, caring for people who won’t in turn produce surplus for you is just an impractical drain on resources /s. Now, I want you to turn this critical lens to these modern issues:

It is still legal in the United States to pay disabled workers below minimum wage. For example, Goodwill pays its disabled workers as little as 22 cents an hour. (Because even when we do work, our work is not seen as valuable)

Disabled people often lose all of our disability benefits if we get married, even if our spouse doesn’t have the financial means to support us. This means that many disabled people who rely on social security are completely unable to get married. (Because someone else should be taking care of us, we shouldn’t be wasting the government’s money with our existence /s)

The main focus of ABA therapy is on molding autistic children into employable adults. This means making them perform as many neurotypical “skills” as possible, in the hopes that they will be hired to work as “productive members of society.” Regardless of the methods used to try and achieve this goal, it is misguided to try and force autistic people to conform to the expectations of an exploitative system that was not built for us.

Hair Color: Black

Skin Color: Very deep brown

Appearance: Jora is tall for her age, chubby and often wears her hair loose in a parted styled held together with bobby pins. She has a wide and round face, nose, and short uet very thick eyebrows. She wears very little makeup, and always seen wearing lacy pink gloves.

Attire: Varies by seasons and series but she typically wears vibrant or pastel hues with floral and animal motifs, cutesy designs, or polka dots. I'll make an outfit ref soon!

Personality: Jora is described as a super sweet if timid and shy young woman with a deep respect for life. However she bottles up a lot of her negative emotions which sometimes makes her a doormat or she ends up being really icy. She learns to beyter express her negativity, though she does retain emotional sensitivity time to time.

In the OS Jo had to overcome one of her biggest flaws, Bystander Syndrome, in order to protect herself and her friend. Throughout thr series she becomes more assertive, though she dislikes sounding too mean.

While she adheres to the theme of second chances, she has little tolerance for faking and betrayals and wants people to actively work on making amends or changing their ways. She knows that some people can't change, so instead of active revenge she would rather let the person's actions catch up to them, or hold them accountable. She despises assumptions that she's evil just because of her powers. She admits to harboring some resentment, but over time she learned to accept her condition and adapt to it rather creatively.

Love Interests: Ben Tennyson

Ship Name: Cosmic Toadstool or BenJo

Ben Tennyson is her major love interest, starting from a brief tense rivalry from their first meeting. Over time they began to see they had common ground and developed more friendly relations by the end. The Ben 10000 episode is particularly amusing in that BOTH of them were quite disgusting at the implication that their older selves dated each other. Ironically it was their older selves watching their example that lowkey led to them getting back together.

They restarted their friendship in Omniverse albeit clumsily as both hadn't seen nor heard from each other in several years. Not to mention new problems: Jora hadn't quite got over her shyness and was socially awkward, and Ben swore off romance after too many failed relationships ego and wanting to focus on his hero career. Layer seasons would see the two began to grow a romantic attraction to each other, with them getting together post series. I kinda didn't want them together right at the end of s8 to drive home the point of them navigating a romance and not just "fighting fate" or what not. So they'll get together on THEIR own terms.

Backstory: Jora appears in the original show as a recurring character and ally to the Tennysons. The joke is that her family, who were also on a cross-country road trip, would often show up at the exact same city or town the Tennysons would be in.

Original Series: Unlike Ben and Gwen, the timid Jo was born with her powers but was afraid of them as she could barely keep it in check. She also didn't start out friendly with the two having been put off by their constant quarreling. It wasn't until an encounter with Kevin Levin (hint: KIDNAP) where she tried using her powers to defend herself and Four Arms for the first time. It didn't exactly work out leaving her ashamed for being a bystander, and decided to remedy this by practicing her powers for better use. This leads up to the Camp Fear event where she played a huge part in containing and eventually purifying the corrupted Mycellium (and yes corrupted; there's something bigger going on).

There were a couple of more adventures: goinf to Chicago to meet up with her cousins Patti and Ginger for a music fesitval; time travel shenanigans, fighting Rojo and her niece Cinnabar, & battling the the Negative 10. Her relationship with Ben and Gwen also greatly improved to the point where they became genuine friends near the end of the show.

UAF: After the road trip ended, she parted ways with the Tennysons and headed back to her hometown of Anneville,S.C. While not fully copinf with her powers she had a rejuvenated sense of self confidence and decided to find more uses for her powers. This included clearing away invasive plant species around town, going into homes and clearing away toxic molds, and dabbling into the scientific side of her powers. She maintained contact with the Tennysons until a few years when life started to get too busy for any of them to remain in contact.

It was also at this point Jora would learn about the scorn "dark" elementals would face, as well as a conflict between dark elementals just wanting to live their lives in peace and a group called the Temple of Light. The Temple's goal was to rid the world of all evil but took rather underhanded methods to do it. Jo would also briefly battle a faction of Forever Knights led by her contemporary Forever Princess, and villainous entrepreneur Kudzu.

Omniverse: Six years passed and Jora got a request from Max Tennyson to join a new "initiative." She turned it down, feeling that she wasn't suited for actual superheroics and wanting to focus on her studies. She was also afraid of seeing her old friends; a small part of her wondered if they'd still recognize her after so many years.

A few weeks later Patti planned on moving to Bellwood for her new job. Jora came with her to help her move in, & it was that trip where she and Ben reunited, and met his new partner Rook Blonko. Ben mentioned about his grandfather picking out new teammates to protect Bellwood. Jora admitted that max sent her a letter but she turned him down for personal reasons. Feeling rather disappointed Ben states that there's always an open spot for her.

During her stay Jora and Rook were taken around town to get familiar with each other and the sites. Rook was curious about her relationship with Ben which she replies that they go way back but hadn't really talked to each other in years. Much of season one and two is spent with her and Ben awkwardly reconnecting. Eventually she becomes a bit of a consultant for the Plumbers and a major member of Team 10, further developing her friendship with Rook, and something much deeper with Ben.

Post Series: Jora's experiences leads her to try to form a villain rehab group, succeeding by forming the Substitute Plumbers. She also begins to use her status and fame to raise awareness on multiple issues from gentrification to widespread Plumber corruption. After a brief breakup and working solo, She and Ben 10000 reconciled and within a year of two married and had three kids over the span of ten more years. Jora became a consultant specializing in Earth customs.

Trivia

- Voice Claim is Kimberly Brooks

- Her theme is nature to contrast with Ben's aliens and Gwen's magic

- Also a bit ironic: she's a good character who protects and values life yet has a power linked to death/dying.

- Doesn't really have a signature color though she does wear a lot of white accents as white symbolizes death in some cultures

- She was made 1) because I'm salty B10 didn't have a named black girl character & 2) to give Ben a compelling/fleshed out love interest

- Jora has a Reboot counterpart! Largely the same except now she's a main fixture right from rhe beginning and has a slightly different power set

- She's not present in every single episode of the original; those times she'd be off with her family doing their own thing

- Her verse is called the Joraverse since it's a complete rewrite of the OS and OV as a whole (not strictly related to her btw but I'm also salty at more than a fee b10 things)

- Her alternate counterparts has different elements, personalities and even designs!

- If she existed her theme song would be the Japanese cover of Say So by Rainych

- Much of Jo's character is based on Card Captor Sakura since I've always been a fan of that show

- Just like how Ben has different aliens Jora has different costumes with different themes.

- In OV her costumes signify each color of the rainbow and has a pun of some sort. She even earns special items with different properties (elemental spells, alien tech, token of peace).

- While Jora appreciates all of Ben's forms she has a certain fondness for Four Arms and Grey Matter (he rescued her as Four Arms and she finds Grey Matter adorable)

i really love the jedi order. i really do. i love them because they tried to do good; they were selfless and expected nothing in return. they are fundamentally good people who want to do good but how did they fail? what is the reason that the whole world collapsed? the galaxy’s fall cannot be blamed on one person; there are thousands or perpetrators whether is it by active choice or basically just ignoring it. they all contributed to the fall of the galaxy.

jedi as individuals can achieve a lot no doubt; many jedi have received the gratitude of many people around them with their need to do good and be selfless. the jedi are a faction that wants to do good and try to minimise their flaws. that’s what they stand for. but what went wrong is when they refused to face those flaws in the wake of a war and raging corruption. they were basically blinded by complacency which is bound to happen when you have the same person as your head for a few hundred years.

let’s look at the bigger picture, it is established that the senate is corrupt and the jedi are serving this corrupt senate believing that they are good. however, they did begin to notice the warning signs but they were too blinded because it worked for more than a thousand years and they believed it would prevail but how wrong were they. the common theme that occurs over and over again is the force’s will which to say they were kind of using that as an excuse to justify their actions.

i believe there’s a clear line between your religious beliefs and your rules. and that is what i am trying to explore here.

the whole notion that yoda is fallible may be foreign to some but indeed, in some ways, he did fail the jedi by not taking quick enough actions or denying his flaws and blaming others. it happens and it’s perfectly normal after being considered wise, humble and all for a few hundred years. how other people view you affect you and yoda is no exception from that. some rules they impose such as the no attachment rule wasn’t originally in the jedi code before our republic. actually, it’s a recent one in the scheme of time. jedi were allowed to marry and love and they condemned possessive relationships which they did rightfully so. but as time went on, they begin to fear healthy relationships too by creating a whole rule forbidding healthy attachment. if they didn’t , then, why did they take kids when they were babies? they did it so they don’t know how to get attached so it helps them to put their mind to fully become the jedi they want.

and when, anakin comes in who basically is very different from what typically the jedi order is used to, they feared him. the jedi feared change. the jedi thought their method was superior and thus, they forced a traumatized boy to fit into a mold he couldn’t. mistake 1. it’s even more scary to know that palpatine had unrestricted access to anakin since he was a preteen which is creepy in itself because he’s an old man and a child which is a prefect background for grooming. the jedi failed to exert their rights as anakin’s rightful guardian. i have heard people say that the jedi were mostly neutral to him when they were assessing him but is it really when what you are saying to perfectly normal feelings that it is evil to harbour them and make the child feel guilty or disappointed. mind you, we are not talking about an adult here; we are talking about a nine year old child, fresh out of slavery. he has lots of trauma in terms of self-worth to deal with and he didn’t need more people telling him he’s bad and evil, causing his self-esteem to further plummet. yes, he seemed confident in tpm, thanks to his mother, but there is there whole self-esteem problem apparent. in this scene, anakin asks what will happen to me now. and i have heard people call him selfish for that. he’s a child for god’s sake who thinks he will be put back into slavery again after being rejected. that’s really messed up. the responsible thing to do then would have been to say, i am sorry but we can’t train you because our training programme won’t fit you and we do not have the tools or training to cope with your trauma but we are willing to help you get into society and free your mother and then hand the reigns to you and your mother to free more of them.

mistake 2. there is nothing wrong to agreeing to fight a war but recruiting a slave army into is not really acceptable. this further shows their moral failings. i think palpatine is part to blame but we can’t divorce the jedi from the blame since they made the choice to lead the slave army. and i doubt there’s nothing in their code to say that they need to accept a slave army to fight in a war. slavery is wrong. there’s nothing more or less to it. there is no good slave owner. so they were nice to them and all but they still infringed on their basic rights; well for one, they had no rights to start with and most considered them canon fodder as if their lives didn’t matter. somehow that’s easy to overlook, i guess. heck, most jedi were nice to them but never really saw them as an equal or as an person save for a few jedi but still they didn’t care enough to free them. everyone in the jedi order is to be blamed for it because they perpetrated slavery and allowed slavery even within the republic. that’s wrong. weren’t jedi supposed to be peacekeepers and guardians of justice. there’s nothing just about slavery. i think people like to just blame palpatine but the Jedi made the choice to accept it. and they continued to listen to him by using this slave army. and none of them really stopped for a moment and considered that hey, this is wrong and maybe, there are better alternatives to using than a slave army like gathering everyone trained in combat like the battle of naboo because there were no clones there btw so planets must have some sort of military. and if you call these lazy pigs and that they won’t defend them and then, i would ask — then , why are they citizens of the republic, isn’t it their duty?

mistake 3, they refused to admit to their mistakes. for example, the whole ahsoka fiasco where they just said that it’s the will of the force. like, does that make it okay to send a minor into a bureaucratic trap where they will probably execute her without a fair trial. considering they prosecuted her on purely circumstantial evidence. like so they are willing to throw their child to sharks because of a this one flimsy piece of evidence instead of standing by her? oh, and then giving her to a probably emotionally unstable jedi just to see if he can let go. does she even mean anything to them? do they care about her education? plus, the guy that was supposed to teach her was a newly minted knight who has yet to get into the balance of things. i don’t think that’s a good idea. so does ahsoka even mean anything to them? like they made quite questionable decisions for ahsoka. and like she’s a child! you are her guardian, you have the rights to do something and they just opted to let rusty cogs run and come to a probably wrong decision? sounds about right.

well, there are a lot more mistakes than this.

I’ve given in and joined the rapidly growing cult of sourdough. I even gave my starter a suitably cultish name... I call her The Avatar of Zuggtmoy, after the demon queen of fungi and molds in oldschool D&D.  And she has blessed me with my first gift! A loaf of whole wheat sourdough bread! Check out that crumb shot (no really that’s what it’s called). It’s dense as fuck, but so soft and chewy and perfect with just a little butter. I can’t wait to try it with my soup tomorrow. Tear Gas protection

So I've never been to a protest, I'll admit. However I have A LOT of allergies, many of which are asthmatic triggers. So over time I've accumulated methods of keeping harmful substances away from my eyes, nose, and mouth. So, even though I'm usually too sick to attend protests, I figure I could probably help out by sharing these.

1. Goggles

I know that seems a tad obvious when you hear it, but seriously. Goggles. Get some. And the great thing about these? You can get ones that have those special yellow lenses that cut glare... like say the glare created from the lights of police vehicles, flashlights, etc.

And the great thing about goggles? They come in a bunch of different styles. Many of which you can just wear on your head for fashion....

Like those goggles? I got em off eBay. For super cheap. They've lasted years. They've saved my eyes from many allergens. But they also look p cool when worn like that. And I've run errands or gone about my day with those on like that btw. Most people don't think much of it.

(but honestly even just swimming goggles could probably do the trick)

2. Ventilator Mask

Now this is one of the things that a lot of people think ya gotta have a big bulky thing in order for it to do anything. But what if I told you that most people with health issues like mine have masks like these?

The main brand for these are called "vogmask", and they have several layers of air filters, including carbon filters, and there's a ventilation duct on the side there. It'll keep A LOT of stuff out. And it's mostly fabric, so easy to tuck into your pocket or bag until you need it.

(Btw it comes in like. All the colours and patterns.)

And while actual vogmasks can be kinda pricy, if you get another similar ventilator mask (just make sure it says it has carbon filters), then it should work just as well. Some of the knock offs are a bit bulkier, stiffer, have two ventilation ducts, etc. but they should serve your needs just fine.

3. Dust Masks

Now these you can get at the dollar store. Or Walmart, or a hardware store or.... Basically they're super cheap and super accessible.

Now these are technically not designed for harmful chemicals in the air, however I've used them while cleaning black mold, as well as when exposed to heavy duty perfume exposure. Perfume is my worst asthmatic trigger btw. Like it can send me into a potentially life-threatening asthma attack. And there have been instances where someone sprayed a bunch of perfume in the air near me, and all I had handy was a dust mask, and the mask was enough. (I had a shitty neighbour for a while who would try to cover up the fact that she was smoking in her place by spraying a SHITTON of perfume near her entrance. It took a few weeks of complaints to get it sorted out, but in the meantime I would have to wear a dust mask anytime I got near my own door, and especially if I was in the hallway.)

So while they may not be the best, they can block a decent amount. Potentially enough to give you time to gtfo of there. Or to do whatever ya gotta do, idk.

Secondary Benefit: when you're wearing goggles and/or a mask like that...... it's a lot harder to tell who you are..... Just saying. And since you're using equipment that's designed for protection....... A lot harder for the other side to say that you're a bunch of masked thugs. I mean you're just trying to keep yourself safe!! If they don't want you wearing masks and goggles, then they ought to stop using chemical warfare on citizens!! (Especially considering that some of those citizens have conditions like asthma which makes those "nonlethal" methods potentially lethal but ANYWAY)

Anyway. Hope this helps even one person out there. Stay safe everyone!!

Makes 40-45 cookies Yes, it's that time of year again! All kinds of Easter cookies (or Koulourakia in Greek) are baked during the holy week. With their wonderful smell, they are the promise that Easter is finally approaching, while we are still fasting! I can't wait to try Koulourakia again when fasting is finished. Especially these delicious twisted 2 colored cookies with vanilla and chocolate are simple, beautiful and taste divine when I dip them in my coffee! They are also called Friendship Cookies because with their colors and twisted shape, they remind us to love and be friends with every other person in the world, which is the true meaning of Easter! Btw traditionally koulourakia are highly anticipated in Greece at Easter time, although they are consumed all year round 😅!! The difference is that they were sorely missed during the Great Lent, so absence makes the heart grow fonder, I guess! Or it’s just that they taste amazing 😉!! Suitable for lacto-ovo vegetarians.

INGREDIENTS (for 40-45 pcs): 500 gr / 1 lb 2 oz/4 cups All-purpose Flour 200 gr / 7 oz /a bit less than 1 cup Crystal Sugar 150 gr / 5.5 oz Butter (or margarine) soft 1 large Egg (for the dough) @ room temp. 1 small Egg (for glazing) @ room temp. 15 ml / 1 tbsp. Vanilla Essence 25 ml / 1.5 tbsp. fresh Milk 1/2 tsp. Salt 1/2 tbsp. Baking Powder 1/4 tsp. Baking Soda 25 ml / 1.5 tbsp. Brandy Extra for the chocolate dough: 3 tbsp. Cocoa Powder 3 tbsp. lukewarm Water (to dissolve the cocoa powder)

METHOD: A. Prepare the cookie dough: 1. Melt the butter in the microwave. 2. Use an electric or hand mixer, and place the butter in the mixer bowl. Start beating. 3. Add the sugar. 4. Next, break the large egg and add in the dough as well. 5. Beat the butter with the sugar and egg at medium speed for 10’, until the mix becomes white and fluffy. The more you beat, the whiter and fluffier the dough becomes! 6. When the dough is white and fluffy, turn the mixer speed to very low. 7. Pour gradually and slowly the flour while continuing to beat. 8. Halfway through beating, add the baking soda, milk, brandy, vanilla essence and salt before continuing to add the rest of flour. 9. Once all the ingredients are in the dough, you don’t want to beat with the mixer much longer, in order to prevent batter from hardening. 10. Check the dough: It should be fluffy, soft and buttery. Should not stick to your hands, but be flexible enough to mold into cookies easily. 

11. TIP: If batter is still sticky, add a bit extra flour! If it’s hard, add a bit more milk. 12. When the dough is ready, divide it in half. Half stays in the mixer bowl and the other half in an extra bowl. B. Make the chocolate dough: 13. Dissolve the cocoa powder in 3 tbsp. lukewarm water. Mix it well with a small whisk until it turns into a thick paste.

14. Start beating the (half) dough in the mixer once more. 15. Add the cocoa paste and beat it for 1' or till it is blended and the dough becomes brown. 16. Add half of the baking powder and blend it in. Stop the mixer. 17. Knead the chocolate dough a bit more with your hands. If the chocolate dough feels now a bit sticky, dust just a bit more flour and blend it in. 18. Add the rest of baking powder into the vanilla dough and knead it a bit more with your hands too. 19. Let both bowls with dough rest for 15’ covered with clean kitchen towels.

C. Prepare the cookies: 20. Lay parchment paper on 2 big oven trays. 21. On a flat surface, start rolling the dough to make the cookies. The traditional shape for these cookies is a simple twist. 22. With your hands, take a dollop of the white dough and roll it out to shape it like a thin "cigar". Do the same for the chocolate dough. Now attach their ends together and shape them by twisting them like a 2-string braid. 23. Cut the braid in half with a knife. Place the ready cookies on the lined tray.

24. Repeat with all cookie dough. 25. Take care to make the cookies about the same size so they can be baked at the same time. 26. Tip: You can also make other shapes. Here are a few examples!         a. Wreath b. Twisted Heart c. Letter S or any other letter d. Other inspiring shapes (see photo) 27. Here are my lovely cookies! I suggest that you make them with your kids like I did. Maybe they are not perfect but a great way to make beautiful Easter memories!

28. When all cookies are prepared, beat the extra egg with 1 tbsp. water and a fork. Then using a brush, put some egg mixture on top of all cookies to help them glaze during baking. 29. The 2 trays with yummy homemade cookies full with love are ready to be baked 👫🐥🌸😍! D. Bake both trays with cookies in a preheated oven FAN @200℃ / 400℉ for 17'-20' or until they turn golden brown all around! 30. When ready, remove from the oven, and let cookies in the 2 trays stand to cool down and dry completely.

31. They are fluffy, golden all around and firm to the touch.  And the house smells absolutely delightful!! The promise of Easter approaching.

32. Tip: Put them in a cookie jar to keep them crispy for several days. They can be preserved for a month, if you and especially your kids can stay away from them for that long 😋. Kids love these cookies!! E. Serving suggestion: Place these beautiful Koulourakia on you festive Easter Day table together with the other delicacies you prepare. Here are mine on my table with my dyed Eggs, Greek Sweet Bread-Tsoureki (plain and chocolate-check my separate recipe) and Kataifi rolls (check my separate recipe).

Perfect also if you arrange them in a festive cute plate together with Easter Sweet Bread - Tsoureki, dyed and decorated boiled Eggs and chocolates and give to friends as an Easter gift! Can you think of anything better?!

Δίχρωμα Πασχαλινά Κουλουράκια BY: Greek Cooking Made Easy https://www.youtube.com/greekcookingmadeeasy Φτιάχνει 40-45 κουλουράκια Ναι, είναι και πάλι η πιο όμορφη εποχή του χρόνου! Όλα τα είδη από Πασχαλινά Κουλουράκια ψήνονται στη διάρκεια της Μεγάλης Βδομάδας. Με την υπέροχη μυρωδιά τους, είναι η υπόσχεση ότι το Πάσχα επιτέλους φτάνει, ενώ ακόμα νηστεύουμε! Δεν μπορώ να περιμένω να δοκιμάσω ξανά το Κουλουράκια όταν τελειώσω με τη νηστεία. Ιδιαίτερα αυτά τα νόστιμα στριφτά δίχρωμα Πασχαλινά Κουλουράκια με βανίλια και σοκολάτα είναι απλά, όμορφα και τόσο γευστικά, όταν τα βουτάω μέσα στον καφέ μου! Ονομάζονται και Κουλουράκια Φιλίας επειδή με τα χρώματα και το στριφτό σχήμα τους, μας θυμίζουν να αγαπάμε και να είμαστε φίλοι με όλους τους ανθρώπους, που είναι και το πραγματικό νόημα του Πάσχα! Τα παραδοσιακά κουλουράκια είναι αναμενόμενα με λαχτάρα στην Ελλάδα τις ημέρες του  Πάσχα, αν και καταναλώνονται όλο το χρόνο 😅 !! Η διαφορά είναι ότι μας λείπουν κατά τη διάρκεια της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής, οπότε η απουσία τους μας κάνει να τα πεθυμούμε, φαντάζομαι! Ή είναι απλά ότι έχουν καταπληκτική γεύση 😉! Κατάλληλα για χορτοφάγους.

ΥΛΙΚΑ (για 40-45 κομμάτια): 500 γρ / 1 lb 2 oz / 4 φλυτζάνια Αλεύρι για όλες τις χρήσεις 200 γρ / 7 oz / λίγο λιγότερο από 1 φλιτζάνι κρυσταλλική Ζάχαρη 150 γρ / 5,5 oz Βούτυρο (ή μαργαρίνη) μαλακό 1 μεγάλο Αυγό (για τη ζύμη) @ θερμοκρασία δωματίου 1 μικρό Αυγό (για γυάλισμα) @ θερμοκρασία δωματίου 15 ml / 1 κ.γ. ΄Αρωμα Βανίλιας 25 ml / 1,5 κ.σ. φρέσκο ​​Γάλα 1/2 κ.γ. Αλάτι 1/2 κ.σ. Μπέικιν πάουντερ 1/4 κ.γ. Μαγειρική σόδα 25 ml / 1,5 κ.σ. Κονιάκ Επιπλέον για τη ζύμη σοκολάτας: 3 κ.σ. Κακάο σε σκόνη 3 κ.σ. χλιαρό Νερό (για να διαλύσει τη σκόνη κακάο)

ΜΕΘΟΔΟΣ: Α. Προετοιμάστε τη ζύμη για τα κουλουράκια: 1. Λιώστε το βούτυρο στο φούρνο μικροκυμάτων. 2. Χρησιμοποιήστε ένα ηλεκτρικό μίξερ ή μίξερ χεριού και τοποθετήστε το βούτυρο στο μπολ του μίξερ. Αρχίστε να το χτυπάτε. 3. Προσθέστε τη ζάχαρη. 4. Στη συνέχεια, σπάστε το μεγάλο αυγό και προσθέστε και αυτό στη ζύμη. 5. Χτυπήστε το βούτυρο με τη ζάχαρη και το αυγό σε μεσαία ταχύτητα για 10', μέχρι το μίγμα να ασπρίσει και να αφρατέψει. Όσο περισσότερο χτυπάτε, τόσο πιο λευκή και πιο αφράτη γίνεται η ζύμη! 6. Όταν η ζύμη ασπρίσει, γυρίστε την ταχύτητα στο πολύ χαμηλό. 7. Προσθέστε σταδιακά και αργά το αλεύρι ενώ συνεχίζετε να χτυπάτε. 8. Κατά τη διάρκεια του χτυπήματος, προσθέστε επίσης τη σόδα, το γάλα, το κονιάκ, την βανίλια και το αλάτι πριν συνεχίσετε να προσθέτετε το υπόλοιπο αλεύρι. 9. Μόλις όλα τα συστατικά μπουν στη ζύμη, δεν θέλει πολύ χτύπημα η ζύμη για να μην σκληρύνει. 10. Δοκιμάστε τη ζύμη-πρέπει να είναι αφράτη, απαλή και βουτυράτη. Να μην κολλάει στα χέρια αλλά να είναι αρκετά ελαστική για να πλάθονται εύκολα τα κουλουράκια.  

11. Συμβουλή: Αν κολλάει στα χέρια, προσθέστε λίγο επιπλέον αλεύρι. Αν είναι σκληρή, προσθέστε λίγο γάλα. 12. Όταν η ζύμη είναι έτοιμη, χωρίστε τη στη μέση. Το μισό παραμένει στο μπολ του μίξερ και το άλλο μισό σε ένα επιπλέον μπολ. Β. Φτιάξτε τη σοκολατένια ζύμη: 13. Διαλύστε τη σκόνη κακάο μέσα σε μπολ με 3 κ.σ. χλιαρό νερό. Ανακατέψτε καλά με ένα μικρό σύρμα μέχρι να μετατραπεί σε μια παχιά πάστα.

14. Ξεκινήστε να χτυπάτε ξανά τη (μισή) ζύμη στο μίξερ. 15. Προσθέστε την πάστα κακάο και χτυπήστε το για 1' ή έως ότου αναμειχθεί και η ζύμη γίνει σοκολατί. 16. Προσθέστε το μισό μπέικιν και ανακατέψτε το μέσα στη σοκολατένια ζύμη. Σταματήστε το μίξερ. 17. Ζυμώστε τη ζύμη σοκολάτας λίγο περισσότερο με τα χέρια σας. Αν την αισθάνεστε τώρα να είναι λίγο μαλακή και να κολλάει στα δάκτυλα, προσθέστε λίγο αλεύρι και ενώστε το μέσα στη ζύμη. 18. Προσθέστε το υπόλοιπο μπέικιν στη ζύμη βανίλιας και ζυμώστε λίγο περισσότερο με τα χέρια σας. 19. Αφήστε τα δύο μπολ με ζύμη να ξεκουραστούν για 15' καλυμμένα με καθαρές πετσέτες κουζίνας.

Γ. Ετοιμασία των δίχρωμων κουλουριών: 20. Στρώστε 2 λαμαρίνες με λαδόκολλες. 21. Σε μια επίπεδη επιφάνεια, αρχίστε να απλώνετε τη ζύμη για να φτιάξετε τα κουλουράκια. Το παραδοσιακό σχήμα είναι μια απλή στροφή. 22. Με τα χέρια σας, πάρτε ένα κομματάκι της λευκής ζύμης και ανοίξτε το για να το διαμορφώσετε σαν ένα λεπτό μπαστουνάκι. Κάντε το ίδιο και για τη ζύμη σοκολάτας. Τώρα ενώστε την μια άκρη τους μαζί και στριφογυρίστε τα σε μια απλή πλεξούδα. 23. Κόψτε τη πλεξούδα στη μέση με ένα μαχαίρι. Τοποθετήστε τα έτοιμα κουλουράκια στη λαμαρίνα.

24. Επαναλάβετε με όλη τη ζύμη. 25. Προσέξτε να φτιάξετε τα κουλουράκια περίπου στο ίδιο μέγεθος ώστε να μπορούν να ψηθούν ταυτόχρονα. 26. Συμβουλή: Μπορείτε βεβαίως να φτιάξετε και άλλα σχήματα. Ακολουθούν μερικά παραδείγματα! a. α. ένα Στεφάνι b. β. Καρδιά c. γ. Γράμμα S ή οποιοδήποτε άλλο d. δ.  Άλλα εμπνευσμένα σχήματα (βλ. Φωτογραφία) 27. Εδώ είναι τα υπέροχα μπισκότα μου! Προτείνω να τα φτιάξετε με τα παιδιά σας όπως έκανα και εγώ. Ίσως να μην γίνουν τέλεια, αλλά είναι ένας πολύ καλός τρόπος για να τους χαρίσετε όμορφες Πασχαλινές αναμνήσεις!

28. Όταν όλα τα κουλουράκια σας είναι έτοιμα, κτυπήστε το επιπλέον αυγό με 1 κουταλιά της σούπας νερό και ένα πιρούνι. Στη συνέχεια, χρησιμοποιώντας πινέλο, απλώστε λίγο από το μίγμα αυγού πάνω από όλα τα κουλουράκια για να τα βοηθήσετε να γυαλίσουν κατά το ψήσιμο. 29. Τα 2 ταψιά με τα πεντανόστιμα σπιτικά κουλουράκια γεμάτα με αγάπη είναι έτοιμα να ψηθούν 👫🐥🌸😍! Δ. Ψήστε τα δύο ταψιά μαζί σε ένα προθερμασμένο φούρνο στο ζεστό αέρα @ 200 ℃ / 400 ℉ για 17'-20' ή μέχρι τα κουλουράκια να ροδίσουν και να χρυσίσουν παντού! 30. Όταν είναι έτοιμα, αφαιρέστε τα από το φούρνο και αφήστε τα κουλουράκια να κρυώσουν και να στεγνώσουν τελείως.

Sometimes I wonder whether I was conscious in seventh grade. I mean, I literally was -- I’m haunted by the spectre of my English teacher, a proper Southern gentleman, picking his nose and thoughtfully examining his findings. Nevertheless, life before eighth grade took place in a viscous mental state, as though my right-handed brain was trying to think left-handed while confined inside a jello mold. Sometime during eighth grade, someone -- probably my new, kleenex-using English teacher -- added metaphorical acid or whatever disintegrates jello to my metaphorical jello mold and all the mental viscosity slurped away and my mind regained use of its dominant hand, which promptly threw into the air a prehistoric bone that turned into a spaceship: DUN-DUNNNNNNH! Everything turned sharper, quicker, clearer.

That wouldn’t happen until the fall of 1990. Before that, glurb. But in the spring semester of 1990, two sparks of nascent consciousness appeared: I started listening to the Top 40 countdown every Saturday morning, and my parents got me my very own magazine subscription from Focus on the Family.

Breakaway magazine was the FOTF empire’s new method for colonizing the minds of teenage boys. (The mysterious Brio took care of the girls.) FOTF, you’ll recall, is the evangelical nonprofit founded by Dr. James Dobson, noted child psychologist, religious ponderer, unrepentant spanker, suave complementarian, and in 2008, the doomsaying author of “Letter From 2012 In Obama’s America,” which let’s just say didn’t pan out. A mixed legacy. But his impact on my developing aesthetic was profound.

I’d get really excited whenever my parents got mail from Dr. Dobson, because his newsletters opened up my small Missouri town (population 5,280) to The World. I mean, “Piss Christ”! Somewhere out there was a motherfucking photo of a CRUCIFIX submerged in Andres Serrano’s URINE. I wasn’t a complete dope -- this was clearly supposed to offend me, but it was still pretty cool. As was The Last Temptation of Christ. Dr. Dobson’s movie critics could have said, “This movie is thoughtful and anguished for three hours and you’ll probably go to sleep,” which is what happened when I watched it a few years later. But no! Sex with Mary Magdalene! The disciples spitting bloody transubstantiated flesh out of their mouths! (Sadly, that bit didn’t make the shooting script.) This fucking thing was so lurid I knew I had to see it -- you know, so I could condemn it with authority.

When Breakaway started, its music reviews were disguised as an advice column. Some kid (or FOTF plant) would write in asking what the fatherly columnist thought of, say, Paula Abdul’s “Opposites Attract.” Fatherly columnist would hold the music’s lyrics up to Scripture’s plumb line and discern whether we his readership should fill our ears with this tripe. Occasionally he’d mention the music. “Opposites Attract” didn’t pass the test. Its overall message was good, averred fatherly columnist, but that line about “She makes the bed/And he steals the covers” implied Paula and her boyfriend were sleeping together outside marriage, rendering the song off-limits for Christian teens. This was reasonable.

Even so, thoughts arrived like butterflies. What if Paula Abdul was supposed to be married to the Wild Pair? By quoting this troublesome line in Breakaway, wasn’t fatherly columnist soiling our minds as thoroughly as if we’d just listened to “Opposites Attract”? Which I continued to do, btw, even though it’s clearly the second worst single off the first two Abdul albums. (Since you asked, “Knocked Out.”) In fact, the sexual implications of the line only occurred to me because of fatherly columnist’s advice! After which they continued to occur to me. Daily. Again and again.

Fatherly columnist was also no fan of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus.” He couldn’t understand why le Mode would be so sarcastic about the Savior of the world, and he encouraged us to call radio stations that were playing the song and breathe heavily into the phone -- “hoohoohoo hahaha hoohoohoo HA!” Either that or we could just tell the DJ how offended we were. I dialed our local radio station once when they were airing that bit of blasphemy. The DJ didn’t answer, drunk as he was on the blood of nubile goats.

I swear we’ll get back to King’s X in a second, but let the record show that two years later, Breakaway gave a hearty recommendation to the first Arrested Development album, despite some “mild profanities” and “sexual images.” While fatherly columnist was fishin’ 4 sex and cusswords, he’d presumably also heard the lines, “This government needs to be overthrown/ Brothers with their AKs and their 9mms/ Need to learn how to correctly shoot them/ Save those rounds for revolution/ Poor whites and blacks bumrushing the system.” Since he didn’t mention those lines in his review, I assumed he approved. For those following along at home, here’s the Focus on the Family scorecard. Stealing the covers outside marriage: not good. Blaspheming Gnostic Jesus: worthy of protest. Armed revolution: OK!

In my first or second issue of Breakaway, “somebody” “asked” about King’s X. The reply was the most important record review I’ve ever read in my life.

“Nobody knows about King’s X, and they’re great!” raved fatherly columnist. He knew about them: a hard rock trio from Texas who harmonized like the Beatles and were inspired by C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Dad had a copy of the Space Trilogy on his shelf, and it had seemed tempting yet forbidding for years. (Like spending a night on the Fixed Land, amirite?) I had to hear this music. I would find Gretchen Goes to Nebraska at the mall.

I wish I could tell you I played the opening song, “Out of the Silent Planet,” with its ethereal 12-string bass riff and its cryptic Christianese lyrics, and felt lifted to new vistas of nirvana and/or joy. I was actually a little disappointed. It’s not like I had so much money to spend on tapes, and the mall was a half hour away! For eight bucks or whatever, I wanted seismic life disruptions. I wanted “Sweet Child O’ Mine” reshaping my fear of hard rock into bliss, or Exposé’s “Tell Me Why” making me jump around the bedroom. King’s X had their moments but they were a little weird.

I told my parents as much a few months later: “They’re kind of like a cult band.” They stared at me from the breakfast nook, bewildered, as though I’d started heavy breathing “Personal Jesus” into their faces. Not an occult band, I quickly backtracked -- “their lyrics are weird and they’re maybe Christian, maybe not.” Why on earth was I throwing around words like “cult band” and “lyrics”? Had I gotten this stuff from Breakaway or Casey Kasem? Whatever. My parents seemed satisfied with this explanation, little concerned that their son was dabbling in the dark art of rock criticism.

My friends, it got worse from there. That fall, on Saturday nights after Twin Peaks, I started falling asleep on my bedroom floor while listening to college radio. (Dad, a Lutheran pastor, would be in the next room with a highball, writing the next morning’s sermon until 1 or 2 in the morning.) Lindenwood College’s Crossroads show played mostly mainstream Christian rock -- Petra, Stryper, Holy Soldier, Idle Cure, Geoff Moore, Liaison -- but sometimes they’d throw in alt-rock bands like The Choir. King’s X’s album Faith Hope Love came out in October of 1990, and at least four of its songs swiftly entered Crossroads’ rotation. Eagerly taping them off the radio, I got the same shivery music fan feeling I’ve only had a couple times since -- that affirmation of a private pleasure being embraced by the outside world. It was thrilling. (I assume this is how hardcore Metallica fans felt about the Black Album.) I heard Gretchen with new ears and expected King’s X to conquer the music world. I had no idea what that could possibly mean.

Here, in a nutshell, we find the perpetual joy and heartache of King’s X fans.

Hey guys! I wanted to know how was the fifty shades darker movie? Was it decent or was it really bad like some people are saying?

Omfg.

I actually have intense complicated thoughts on Fifty Shades.I’ve been obsessed with the rise and fall story of Fifty Shades, mostly because I’m a fanfiction writer myself and super - SUPER fucking familiar with the community and it’s inner workings. LONG POST AHEAD. 

The tale of HOW and WHY Fifty Shades even hit bestseller is amazing. AD I SEE IT HAPPEN EVERYDAY ON AO3. Like, keeping your fanfic chapters to a couple thosand words, updating weekly, and commenting on comments for your fic to up the comment count (something I refuse to do for this very reason) is a VIABLE method to staying on the top list of any fandom on any fanfic hosting website. Even if you only have the same 10 people commenting on your fic, fic you comment back, 20 comments per chapter nad have 60 chapters? Thats 1200 comments! FUCKING INSANE. I see it everyday. I think every fanfic reader/writer knows that ONE STORY thats ALWAYS on top, for this reason alone, even when (JUST LIKE EL JAMES) the writing is horrendous. 

So! When I researched all of this once the book was released and had all that controversy about BDSM I was both suprised, impressed and horrified. Suprised that a fanfic had even MADE it this far. Impressed because, you got to give the girl kudos. Having her original fanfic readers comment and rate her book on amazon with copy pasta reviews and skyrocketing her to #1 is ingenious. It is, from a marketing stand point its amazing. And of course, I was horrified and dissapointed that with all the fanfics out there, it had to be this one. Not only was the writing terrible, but its a terrible terrible representation of the bdsm culture and community. 

Do not misunderstand me; The Fifty Shades books are horribly written and super problematic. 

The Movies: 

Okay so, I’m a huge film buff. Huge. I took film history and cinematic storytelling in college and I love analyzing movies. 

From a director and writer and cinematographers standpoint, I was literally curious about HOW THE FUCK YOU EVEN FILM THIS MOVIE?? Like, will they have exposition of her ‘INNER GODDESS’ like some odd edgar wright cut aways to a Lizzie McQuire type Anastasia steel!?!? WILL THEY ACTUALLY FILM HIM RIPPING OUT HER TAMPON TO FUCK HER?? (this happens in the book) LIke I needed to know. I had to know. SO I had to see the first movie. I was too curious. AND I wanted to see a legit, from my generation, written fanfiction, adapated for film. Its too groundbreaking, even if you have problems with the story and films how is that not fascinating. 

After watching it this is what I got (I did not pay for this movie btw.) 

EVERY FANFICTION I EVER READ EVER ALL ROLLED UP INTO ONE META MINDFUCK. Like!??? I have almost a keen adoration for how WEIRD it is to see ON SCREEN lines like “Your biting your lip.” LIKE – thats fanfiction from 2005, the lip bite. The FUCKING. Dialogue of this movie is like a collection of all the terrible coffee shop aus, high school, fanfic soap opera craziness. Or how he just bumps into her at her work and shit!? OR the fanfic issue of a 20-something yr old interviewing the SUPER HOT hotshot bachelor who has tons of money because….why? WHAT DOES HE DO? In fanfic it doesnt matter but in the movie THEY NEVER ADDRESS THIS EITHER> 

I MEAN its literally that FIC. The one where theres nothing left of your ship you havent consumed, and this one aint so great but eh its 4am on a tuesday and it has 45 chapters. 

I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend any writer or reader to watch this film just for the weird TRIP it is. It freaks me out mann its nuts! 

The movie literally breaks hundreds of Cinematic rules JUST TO tell the story because its source material is what it is. Theres no introduction to the protagnist, no side introduction to our love interest like a rom con always does and the Meet Cute is isn’t a meet cute, it plays like a PROMPT. And its in the first 3 minutes of the film. 

And the Twilight source the fic hangs on can be seen there on screen. Seattle, him saving her from the bike/car, his big rich family compared to her remarried mom (to a golfer not a baseball guy), and her estranged dad whose never around, the weirdness of Christian Grey thats missing that can only be explained by -immortal vampire-. Its insane. They didn’t change any of it. You can see Twilight right there its hilarious. 

AND BECAUSE ITS FIC, theres actually, surprisingly, some really good moments? Its few and far between, but I find the bar scene generally funny and charming. Anastasia anyway. Christian is a creepy from first minute to last minute of every movie because what can you do with a non-vampire-vampire character, really? But Anastasia is pretty funny in a way Bella swan never was. I love the whole “Your so bossy, come here, come here, go away go away!” dialogue. FUCKING hilarious. And so unarguable a FANFIC genre of WIT. I like those moments. Or the buisness meeting about the bdsm contract “please turn to page 5 and strike out ‘anal fisting.’” “Are you sure?” “YUP.” (no paraphrasing, she literally says YUP. 10/10 delivery) Also love the texting scenes, reminds me too much of MS though and I immediately felt like trash. 

Now, aside from those moments, hands down, terrible fucking plot. But it had terribel fucking plot to begin with. 

What I was suprised about was that the film crew and creators DID IN FACT listen to te protests and uproar about the controversy of the content of the film. And I was suprised to see that THEY CHANGED a lot of stuff and cut out a lot of shit too. Christian NEVER touches her unless she says so. There actually a lot of moments stressing the consent thing. Even in the room, he tells her to hold out her hand and test the pain, and se if its ok. If its ever to much, he tells her to say stop, and he will. In fact, we see a lot of “nos” that he adheres to. Whereas in the books hes on he like a grade A rapist. They also add her in negotiating a ton of the terms. 

Theres no tampon pulling scene and no inner goddess, much to my dismay/happiness. Lol. 

HOWEVER.Aside from terrible plot, after making changes to the controversy, the movie didnt go far enough to differentiate the problematic nature of CHRISTIAN and the lifestyle of BDSM. Because Anna is a stranger of both, both are presented to the audience as BAD. We see bdsm through the lens of someone who USES IT THE WRONG WAY, FOR THE WRONG THINGS, and thats the main idea the movie can seem to target, and the book never bothered to learn. That last red room scene is Confusing at best, since its all consensual and really tame looking to anyone apart of bdsm, and misdirecting at worst to anyone not apart of it. Because its obvious Christian has ACTUAL Issues, but we’re made to believe all BDSM is like that, and its just not true. 

TO THE SEQUELS CREDIT, 50SDarker goes a little more into this. Not just with dialogue, but showing how Anna is accepting of and in control of BDSM. She asks for specific thinks and seeks out certain sexual activities and calls him out on the shadier parts of his own personality, But in my opinion, its not enough. Theres too much –between the lines– and for a movie ABOUT this lifestyle, its to important to skim over like they do. Thats probably the most disapointing part. 

All in all, its a terrible plot and terrible movie, that doesnt know enough about a material it references, and cant stand alone without its SOURCE material. 

Theres way too many helicopter shots of places, and vehicles. Greys idea of romancise seems to be fancy transportation of some sort and his idea of -KINKY- sex is Cunnilingus, missionary, missionary cunnilingus, and missionary with some handcuffs. But its a WILD ride to watch. And has its genenuinly charming moments that can only come from the COMMUNITY of FANFICTION that molded it. As we know, fandom is just as much influenced by the original fiction as it is the headcanons, aus, peronality tropes and almost mandala effect culture the FANS put into it. And I love and adore that secret part of the movies. Dakota Johnson is also super charming and natural as Anna. A Bella swan, oc, induced character, self instert type fanfic pov. And to do that is some acting talent right there. And finally, and I’m probably the ONLY one here, but Im not 100% upset that 50shades got a movie. Because yes, its terrible in a on of fucking ways. But its STILL a fanfic on screen. And thats incredible. Thats why I bought tickets to support the sequel. She may have manipulated the rise to fame, but EL James still showed us the path to that goal. Fanifc to novelist, novelist to billiondollar box office numbers. EL James was ON SET, telling them how to film – HER FANFICTION. Thats a THING now. You cant not take fanfiction as a community and tool seriously now. Not when it made that much money. And hey, look at Superhero movies. We had to sit through too many shit Xmen and Daredevil movies to get an Iron man. 

I will sit through a few 50shades to get my fucking favorite fanfics on screen too. Its not like Hollywood has any better stories to put up but Adam Sandler movies.

I'm about to turn 16, and would like to save up for a reliable, cheap (2k-4.5k), good-looking, car. It has to be American, or anything other than Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai, etc. cause dad works for GM. I am paying for the car on my own, most likely, but maybe I can convince parents to pay 1k or so. Money is tight right now in my family. Dad got demoted last year during GM's bankruptcy, and may get a promotion in spring. My Mom is opening a restaurant this year, which is going to cost a lot. I have a terminal illness but I am still able to work, however, I am on COBRA because my last job wrongly fired me. I am not poor but I simply cannot keep paying for COBRA. I cannot go for Medicaid because my good doctor does not accept Medicaid and I do not want to owe lots of money and have to worry about paying it off. I heard there is a program with either Social Security or Medicare where all you need to do is fill out a few forms and get a letter from your doctor stating that you have a terminal illness. Then you will receive health insurance for little or no cost and your doctor has to accept the insurance. Does anyone have any info on this?
