Skektember 9 : the one they hate
In the Natives AU, SkekShod and SkekLi spent at some point a drunken night of passion together. No love or anything, just 2 drunk guys fucking. SkekLi left arter his semo punishment, SkekShod stayed... but, afraid that SkekSo who had him in his bad graces and had bashed him on his head would do worse to ruin his life, the next time SkekLi visited he shoved in his arms an egg/a baby (depensing out own takes, @dracocheesecake sees the Skeks are oviparian while I don't lol sub AUs) to bring with him to protect them as much as it pained him. His ! SkekLi was absolutely not ready or responsible enough for that, ESPECIALLY since he had already gotten SkekLach pregnant before after just a one night stand during mating season, WHY did it keep happening to him !? Not seeing how he could rise a Skekling while being a semi-banished wandering artist, he gave them to an old friend and former crush/booty call : UrLii. UrLii was NOT ready either but couldn't just abandon a baby so had no choice but accept. He named them SkekMi (belong to Draco). He raised her like an UrRu, teaching her their ways and protecting her from racist remarks from other UrRu who did not lile to see a Skekling playing with their Urrlings. SkekLi would sometimes visit, but more like an irresponsible uncle than as a father staying just for the fun part of parenting and leaving when it becomes hard, to both UrLii's annoyance and SkekMi's disappointment. But she got used to it
Though one day as a teenager she asked him who her mother was. Li didn't lie, it was the Treasurer, SkekShod. SkekMi asked him one to bring her with him to meet him, which he accepted (only because he was going there already). SkekShod was absolutely emotional. She has grown so much, she was healthy, she was beautiful !... ok she was intoxicated with Mystic way of life but she was alive and well and that was all that matteted. SkekMi can't visit all the time, looking too UrRu for her sake in such an Urruphobic town, but she does try to visit her newfound family to catch up Only issue is... SkekShod, some time after having given her to SkekLi, had fallen in love with SkekOk and they mated off and had 2 children together (with whom she is neutral with. Awkward together). SkekOk not only was appalled he never told him such a secret feeling like he didn't trust him after all these years, he also found out he had a child with SOMEONE ELSE EVEN IF IT WERE BEFORE HIM, RIVALLING HIS OWN LEGETIMATE BABIES ?! SkekOk got a hate at first sight with the teen which soon became mutual. The cliché evil stepfather who mocks her looks, calls her ugly, compares her to HIS perfect children, reminds her whenever he can that Shod abandonned her while he didn't abandon the others which proves she means nothing to him so she could perfectly just never visit again... she knows those are all lies but it hurts, and it makes her wish to retort back. But she can't. He is a courtier and he could rat on a Skeksis raised by the enemy anytime. He doesn't just for his mate... for now

always thinking about the blue tongue skink that we had in the store for a while who had the most human looking eyes I had ever seen on a creature
I really felt connected to him, and as I’ve worked here for a While now, I’ve never felt connected to another animal like I was to him
when his owner was buying him, she was holding him and let me say goodbye, and when he saw me he started squirming out of her arms to crawl into mine .. I literally almost cried on the spot bro.. I miss him so much..

Hey Wig, I'm vaguely familiar with The Dark Crystal, and since you're so knowledgeable of it, would you mind telling me all about it? I just feel like you might enjoy going on a long rant about it and I'm curious
[cracks knuckles] I hope you're ready for the can of worms you've just opened. Under a cut because you have activated my trap card and I will talk about this at ungodly lengths. Just know that this is not all of the Lore, omitted for your future discovery in case you decide to watch this for yourself.
It all starts in the 1980s, when Jim Henson (you might know him as the creator of some famous puppets, like The Muppets or the cast of Sesame Street) sees an illustration for a Lewis Carrol poem of crocodiles living in a fancy castle. This starts the wheels in his mind spinning with the concept of grotesque, reptilian creatures living in luxury.
Tumblr media
Later, he meets illustrator Brian Froud, a really cool fantasy artist and all around cool guy. Froud's artwork looks like this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and Jim loves it. They start talking and eventually end up with a 25 page manuscript entitled The Crystal, which draws on influences from the darker Grimm's Fairytales, with the principle in mind that it's healthy for children to be scared sometimes. Changes get made, things get refined, it's in development for years before the final product, The Dark Crystal starts being filmed.
The catch? It's marketed as "The First Live-Action Movie With No Humans". Every single character in this film (and subsequent prequel Netflix series) is a puppet.
The Premise
Now we get into the actual worldbuilding stuff. First thing's first, this world is called Thra.
Tumblr media
Thra is a wondrous planet that circles three suns, and at its center is the Crystal of Truth. The Crystal connects all life on Thra, and is the spiritual/magical heart of everything. Thra has many native inhabitants, all brought to life by wondrous practical effects, but the most plot-important, are the Gelfling.
Tumblr media
Reminiscent of the elves and sprites in Froud's drawings (they should be, he was the lead concept artist), the Gelfling are said to be closest to Thra. At the time of the prequel series, seven clans of Gelfling inhabit the various corners of Thra. They are also the favorites of the strange mystical guardian of Thra, Mother Aughra.
Tumblr media
Cranky, cantankerous, and with a heart (several hearts??) that beat for the living creatures of Thra, Aughra is kind of a subversion of the sublime mother goddess trope. She's a fantastic character with some even more fantastic insults.
So everything is hunky-dory on Thra for a couple hundred years, before some new beings arrive: The Skeksis.
The Skeksis are probably one of the most iconic aspect of The Dark Crystal, and for good reason. In the movie and the prequel, they're the vultureish, reptilian rulers of Thra. They seize control of the Crystal and begin abusing it, harvesting power from the three suns, sending Aughra off with a splendid orrery to astral project among the stars, and, over thousans of years, make the Gelfling into willing servants who gladly obey the Lords of The Crystal.
They are very obviously the villains, which is one thing that I absolutely adore about them. To the audience, they are almost cartoonishly evil, yet to the characters in the narrative, this villainy is only gradually revealed. There are eighteen total skeksis, but I'm just going to show a few of my favorites.
skekSil the Chamberlain
Tumblr media
For future reference, every skeksis' name starts with the "skek-" prefix and ends with a unique name suffix, followed invariably by the title they hold in court. skekSil is essentially second-in-command to their Emperor, and yes, has been compared to Starscream many, many times before. I will say, he's a lot more successful than Starscream most of the time. He's manipulative, cunning, ruthless, and backstabbing, all with his iconic, high-pitched voice and unforgettable "HHHMMMMMmmmm". He's easily the franchise's most iconic character.
skekTek the Scientist
Tumblr media
Voiced by none other than Mark Hamil himself, skekTek is the long suffering mechanic/inventor/doctor/surgeon/taxidermist/ so many other things to the skeksis. He's responsible for many of the technological advances they've brought to Thra, like harnessing living creatures to use as wheels for carriages! He's absolutely insane and I love him.
skekSo the Emperor
Tumblr media
The supreme bitch himself. The leader of the skeksis, he's the only thing that is giving this disorganized group of horrible turkeys any semblance of order. His favor is paramount, his decisions are final, and he (along with the rest of the skeksis) is horribly afraid of death. All skeksis share this trait, which is what drives them to seek out the Crystal and other methods to try to retain their youth. skekSo is honestly one of the best antagonists I've ever seen in a piece of media. His true motivations and character are slowly revealed throughout the season, without once denying his villainy. It's great. This man sucks but he will be your favorite and there's nothing you can do about it, I'm sorry.
I am of the firm belief that a series is only as good as its villains, and boy does The Dark Crystal deliver. The skeksis can be humorously disgusting and cartoonishly evil at times, but when the moment arises, they are incredibly menacing threats that seem to pose an impossible challenge for our heroes. And I've only mentioned three! The rest of the court and even the ones we don't see are interesting in their own right.
Speaking of our heroes, their basic premise involves attempting to unite the separate Gelfling clans into rebellion against the Skeksis (hence the subtitle of the prequel series, Age of Resistance), after they discover one of the Skeksis' terrible crimes. Anything more than that is a spoiler.
So there's Wig's Dark Crystal Rant. Thank you for your time.

1, 2, 11 and 28
Well this got long quickly...
1. How long ago did you discover The Dark Crystal, and how?
I wassssss three or four, I think? So over two decades ago by this point (because yo’ girl here is dusty). It was Easter and my aunt gave me THIS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before anyone asks: no, I did not dig this old-as-balls VHS out for the sake of this ask. It was already sitting in my room.
(Also I want everyone to know that I wonder every single day which skeksis that’s supposed to be on the cover. Is that supposed to be skekSil?? Is that Sil?? Why does he Look Like That???)
I had a very complicated relationship with this movie for most of my childhood, actually? Which - on that note - unnecessary tangential story time!
When me and my little sister ( @shuri-flurry ) were little, our parents used to take us to this video place to rent movies, yeah? And the place they’d take us to would frequently have The Dark Crystal playing on the TVs they had mounted towards the ceiling of the store. “Previewing the merchandise,” or something.
(Upon reflection, though, there was seemingly no reason for them to have had Dark Crystal playing. This would have been in the mid to late 90s, and therefore well after the movie had been released and needing to be advertised. So I’m not sure what the Video Vision employees thought they were doing there).
My little sister and I - despite having already seen the movie at this point and therefore knowing exactly what we were looking at - were royally freaked out. To the degree that for months afterwards we would be coming up with battle strategies in the car whenever we were taken to rent movies. Essentially, put your head down as soon as you walk through the door so you couldn’t see the TVs, and KEEP it down until you’d discerned whether or not Dark Crystal was playing and how much risk you were in of seeing a skeksis (as long as you couldn’t see them move you were safe).
Now, reading all of the above you’d think I didn’t like the move, right? Wrong! I loved the movie, and would watch in on loop. And my favorite part of it was, in fact, a fucking skeksis (which we’ll get to in a sec here). It’s just that for some ungodly reason, I was utterly terrified of the thing that brought me joy.
Figure that one out.
2. If you watched TDC as a child, who were your favorites then, and who are they now? If not, do you think that your child self would have enjoyed it?
My fave back in the day was our most beloved bastard, dear skekSil. For as much as the skeks freaked me out as a kid, I couldn’t resist falling in love with Sil. Mostly because my villain-lovin’ baby-heart felt incredibly bad for him. Not only was he picked on by the other skeksis (from a toddler’s point of view, at least), but when he talked to Jen and Kira, they were mean and ran away!! Even after he saved them from the Garthim!! RUDE you guys, not cool!!
(I knew that he didn’t have Jen and Kira’s best interests at heart when he was talking about “peace,” but I couldn’t quite comprehend it at that age. If that makes any sense at all.)
He’s still up there in my top 5, although now it’s because as an adult I can appreciate just how cutthroat and devious he is, all while doing it so... uniquely. In all of fiction, there’s only ONE Chamberlain.
He’ll be very aggrieved to know that he’s sharing the spotlight with several others now, though (all still skeks; don’t know if this counts as irony or just me upholding my brand):
SkekSo has clawed his way up the ranks, which knowing him either involved stalking his way up to the front of the line of potential faves and expecting everyone to just. Move out of the way for him (which, credit, they did), or it involved actual clawing. The emperor that AoR showed us would absolutely rip a bitch’s face off to bolster himself, and damn him, I adore him for it.
I’ve always had a soft-spot for scientists and abused underlings, and when you combine the two you get skekTek. Obviously he’s a fave. Honestly, his character is kind of more what my child-self had initially interpreted Sil to be, but with the addition of snapping under the abuse and violently committing murder (so he continues to check all my boxes!)
Is there a single person in this fandom who DOESN’T have skekGra somewhere on their list of favorite characters? Anyone? Because he’s certainly on mine.
Last but not least (none of these are in any kind of order, honestly), we’ve got skekLi, and Wig it is ENTIRELY your fault for this. I didn’t even need to meet him in canon - I didn’t even need to read the book he’s in (y’know, literally his only canon appearance???) because you swooped the fuck in and made him the most lovable creature in existence. The impudence.
11. Three favorite romantic ships?
Wig, why would you ask me a question you already know the answer to? You’re the reason I ship anything in this fandom, I was a blank slate before you. Have I not gushed enough? Have I left room for doubt in your mind?
Listing these in chronological order of when I got dragged in if anyone’s interested in knowing, here we go:
a. Li/Gra
When we first started talking, Wig sent me a variety of arts, right? Because she’s sweet like that. Among them was this, which I babbled in the tags on (jokingly, this was only supposed to be a JOKE!), and, in response, she sends me this. Then, while I’m floundering, she drops THIS on me. And then followed that up with about, ohhhh, three, four months? Of developing, pure, heart-wrenching ANGST.
And that’s how I got tricked into shipping Li/Gra.
b. Sil/Ung
This used to be a pairing I didn’t understand the hype for. Like... Yeah, okay, they had the rivalry thing going in the movie for all of five seconds, but apart from that I couldn’t comprehend any interesting ways their characters could bounce off each other. There was no chemistry as far as I could see.
Enter Wig, sliding into my DMs one day, sending me cute art. Then, after softening me up with this initial strike, she casually goes, “have you heard about this scrapped early plot idea in the novel where Zok initiates another trial by stone after Ung won the first one, and uses the reflection in his sword to break the rock leading to Ung being exiled too?”
And then, when I was weak, finished me off with "AU WHERE THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENS AND THEY HAVE TO BEGRUDGINGLY WORK TOGETHER TO GET BACK INTO THE CASTLE."
One dramatic reimaging of the movie, several instances of character development, and the dramatic culmination of all discussed -later, and I’m sobbing my entire shipping heart out.
And that’s how I got tricked into shipping Sil/Ung.
c. So/Li
This one I’ll accept partial responsibility for, since I was technically the one to go “hey wait-” over it, but I would have never stumbled on the realization if I’d never talked to Wig, so I’m still holding her accountable.
This all started when Wig reblogged this, and then we got talking about how this angle might affect Li’s relationship with So. Things escalate and then suddenly it hits me: A demanding, violent tyrant, and the ONE(1) asshole who is both not afraid to and routinely gets away with aggressively taking the piss outta him?? That is FANTASTIC. I’m only human for God’s sake how is one person supposed to be able to resist that kind of dynamic-??
And that’s how I- ah shit. I didn’t technically get tricked into this one, I played myself. My pattern is all thrown off.
28. If skekEkt wanted to design something especially for you, what would you ask him to make (formal wear, armor, an accessory etc.)?
Hooooo boy, okay, here’s the thing: I never know how to respond to people wanting to like... GIVE me things. Or DO things for me. And I don’t imagine I’d feel any less awkward when the person wanting to do things for me is a friggin’ skeksis, who aren’t known for their generosity. It’d make me feel like an exception and I don’t know if I could cope with that.
More to the point, I’m literally a cartoon character. Y’wanna know what my daily outfits usually consist of? I take t-shirts, sweatshirts, and sweatpants (or jeans if I’m going out) that are two or three sizes too big, and then I layer. I call it “I’ve rolled out of a dumpster please leave me to my business” -chic.
None of which meshes with Ekt’s brand of style at all. Nor does Ekt strike me as the type who’d tolerate his creative vision to being restricted in any form, if you catch my drift.
So not only am I awkward and uncomfortable with people doing things for me, but he’d be doing something for me where I wouldn’t know what to do with the finished product.
Just kill me it’d be so much easier.

SkekOk!
Yess give me all the skeks. Let’s talk about this nerd.
Tumblr media
Why I like them
He’s really funny, tbh. The fact that he’s the Scroll Keeper, recorder for the skeksis, and he’s the most untrustworthy of the bunch. He canonically rewrites history to make him and his peers in a favorable light. Or he’ll rewrite stuff on a whim if someone even looked at him the wrong way. He is so incredibly petty and I live for it. It’s also really interesting seeing him genuinely interested in gelfling culture, or at the very least, Vapran culture. He enjoys the tithes way more than skekLach does and doesn’t seem to mind the gelfling as much as the others do. There was such potential for him to make friends with Brea and I’m sad that wasn’t the route they took.
I also really like the fact he can sink into his collar and laugh manically. That’s cute.
Why I don’t
He can be a little bitch sometimes with the useless insults he dishes out.
Favorite episode (scene if movie)
The first episode just before the skeksis went off the rails. When they were way more benevolent and the Scroll Keeper while being nice to Brea, is tone is condescending and from an outsider’s perspective, his treatment of skekLach seems cruel. Great foreshadowing for how the Crystall Alliance falls apart.
Favorite season/movie
AOR skekOk by miles. He was just a background character in the movie.
Favorite line
“Perhaps your interminable age has finally caught up with you”
Favorite outfit
I love his regular outfit, but his bathing gown and cap is a look.
OTP
Like most of the other skeksis, I ship him with his mystic urAc. I really want to see what their dynamic would be like.
Brotp
Obviously him and skekLach are bffs. They’re almost always seen together on screen and joking and teasing each other. When skekOk insults skekLach in the first episode, she laughs. It’s done so very playfully and she knows he doesn’t say it so out of maliciousness. It’s just how these two talk to each other (or maybe it’s just a skeksis thing). Even if they don’t have a lot of screen time, you can tell they have such great chemistry. Also skekOk was clearly heartbroken when the Collector died, mourning with skekEkt over her death.
Speaking of which, I’m also certain skekEkt and skekOk are good buds (also considering they later join a political alliance with skekSil together). They are both the pettiest of the skeksis and thrive on mocking everyone else’s physical looks. I’m sure they regularly make fun of how ugly the other skeksis have become. Away from the skeksis, as mentioned before, I would have loved to see him and Brea being friends. They both have similar interests that they could nerd out and I’m sure under different circumstances skekOk would have shown her his library (at least just so he can brag about it). I just wanted to see some juicy conflict of him being torn between keeping a belevolent relationship with the gelfling and draining their essence. Where he eventually sides with the latter, but it pains him quite a bit. He might even try to save Brea in some way.
Head Canon
I think skekOk is so self-conscious of his physical appearance. He hyperfixates on physical beauty, obsessing over princesses and constantly points out how ugly everyone has become. He can’t get it back so he wants to make sure that everyone knows they are far uglier than he is.
Unpopular opinion
Don’t think I have one.
A wish
Someone call this guy ugly in the show. I want to see how offended he gets.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen
This is a double edged sword because I would like to see this happen, but imagine sometimes he visits skekLach’s room to mourn. He quietly looks through all of her stuff, always comments how much of a slob she was, but never has it cleaned up. Most of the things in the room are junk so none of the other skeksis have stolen anything from it. He looks through all of the stuff, recalling fondly of all the fun they had before the gelfling resistance. At some point he mentions it was probably for the best as she wouldn’t have to attend another tithe. Then he ends up sobbing in her room, clutching to whatever object he got his hands on.
5 words to best describe them
Petty | Vain | Deceitful | Articulate | Flighty
My nickname for them
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD

The Child of the Dark Crystal Chapter 3 “Hide”
DISCLAIMER
I do not own the Dark Crystal or Winx Club and its Characters, all rights go to their rightful owners. I do however own Mara and her story.
Rated E for Graphic Depictions of Violence and Rape/non-con (E Chapters will be announced and only posted on Ao3)
Chapter 3 “Hide”
Time passed quickly and the infant had grown into a child, most of the Skeksis tolerated that she now lived amongst them, some simply because they feared the wrath of the Crystal if they dared to question its will other. Others because they thought that she might be useful for them in the future as she held some secretive power inside of her that they did not quit understood yet. And then there were a few Skeksis that actually seemed to like her.
Especially SkekEkt the Ornamentalist, who raised her, cared for the child and it almost seemed as if she had developed some kind of maternal affection for the little one. She spoiled the girl with self made gowns and jewelry and made sure that the other of her Kin treated her with respect. However a few of the vulture like beings still though of her as a nuisance they wished they could get rid of as soon as possible, especially the new ones that had arrived at the castle after their battle at Stone-in-the-Wood. Every time when the Ornamentalist was not around to protect her, they made sure to let the girl know exactly how they felt about her.
Most of the time she was only left with a shattered self esteem, but there were days when they had scratched and pierced her delicate skin until the blood began to pour out of the wounds. The external wounds were not severe, only scratches on the surface, it was her Heart that suffered every time when she was reminded that she was just a plague to them, an insect they wanted to squash between their bony claws. And thats when she realized that she would never be truly accepted, or even loved by them.
When SkekEkt found out about how her little girl was tretaed by the others of her Kin, she immediately put the culprits in their place with the fury of a mother. The girl was then given a room right next to her chambers and was not allowed to wander the Castle without her to ensure her safety and well-being.
Right know she was sitting behind one of the large pillars, making herself as small as possible to hide from the approaching Skeks. “Hmmmmmmmmm, Mara?…..Where is Child? Mara cant hide from me forever!” The sound of a curtain being rapidly opened startled the little girl, causing a low gasp to escape her little lungs. She swiftly covered her mouth with her little fingers to keep another sound, that could reveal her position to the Chamberlain, from escaping. Luckily it went unnoticed by the Skeks, who was slowly loosing his temper over this little game they were playing. He was slowly taken over by frustration and annoyance, why exactly had he agreed to play Hide and Seek with this little creature?
Everyone in the palace knew to well that she had an exceptionally good talent at finding the most difficult to reach hiding spots, some that even the Skeksis didn't knew of. Little did he knew, that she was actually hiding in plain view, just a few sreps away from him, she could hear the rustling of his Garments, as the fabric was dragged over the floor with each of his steps, telling her exactly where the Skeks was.
She crawled back and forth through the room and each time the Skeks had found her previous hiding spot, she had already taken shelter behind another piece of furniture. But now that the curtains were opened, hiding proved to be much more difficult, as the room was now flooded with light, that creped into the smallest corners of the room. She had to be as quite as possible if she wanted to get out of her unnoticed.
“Mara where are you?” SkekSils voice echoed through the room, the annoyance in his voice being as clear as glass. She loved how easily the Chamberlain lost his patience over a simple game like this, sometimes she would just quietly leave the room, keeping the annoyed Skeks occupied for a few hours until he would storm out of the room in anger. It gave her some free time to explore the Castle without the supervision of her mother or the Chamberlain. She knew that SkekEkt would be angry if she found out about this, but she hated to feel like a prisoner in the pace that she called her home and besides playing hide and Seek with the Chamberlain and reading through the books in the Library, it was the only fun thing to do around here. There were no other children here that she could play with and even though SkekEkt cared for her with all her heart, she was to occupied with other things.
She quietly sneaked to the other side of the room, where a small shaft, barely big enough for her to fit in, was built in to the wall. She quietly crawled into the small space that writhed around the whole Castle and often served as her means of escape when she wanted to get out of the Prison that her room was. Or in.
She had crawled halfway back to her room, when the ground beneath her suddenly gave in and crumbled apart. A shrill scream escaped her lungs as she began to fall, beneath her the Banquet hall, where the Skeksis usually gathered to feast. She landed on the marbled stone floor with a loud thud, dust was whirled around from the falling debris and formed a thick layer of particles around her. A wave of pain rushed through Mara’s body as it crashed to the ground and the air was forcefully pressed out of her lungs with a sharp exhale. She heard the shocked gasps of the Skeksis around her and when the dust began to settle, and formed a thin layer of dust on her skin, she stared directly in the eyes of the Skeks that she always tried to avoid.

Good Skeksis designs
~~~
I break the laws of the universe, but stay with me! I had this vision of them being pure good beings, still having their characters and i couldn’t let it go. I especially love my Good Skek’so, so you will see them more ^^;;;
Skek’so - Unlike his dark counterpart, Skek’so cares deeply for the life on Thra and the gelflings. He dedicated his life to create an empire for them to thrive and live in peace. It pains him to outlive them, so when the Darkening appears, he sacrifices himself to contain it and keep it hidden from the rest. But he can’t hide it forever and when his friends discover, it causes a lot of emotional pain. Especially for Skek’sil.
Skek’sil - Here he is truly the friend of gelflings. He is their ambassador and knows all the Maudras. He never forgets and keeps his friends close. When a friend of his, Ordon contacts him, that his son was arrested for a crime unknown, Skek’sil discovers a plot against the Skeksis and Thra itself.
Skek’tek - Still the most vulnerable of the Skeksis. He dedicated his life to preserve Thra and it’s creatures. He lost his eye to a beetle still. The creature was released in his lab by gelflings to steal some of his research. Tek is traumatized by the event, but his family is now there to heal him.
Skek’ ung - After his friend Skek’var was killed in the battle for Stone-In-the-Wood, Skek’ung was called back to the castle. A vote was cast to inherit the title “General”. He won, but objected, since he didn’t want to take the title of his closest friend. When the Garthim was created for the upcoming civil war, he picked the title Garthim Master as fast as possible and organized them into an effective peacekeeping force.
Skek’mal - The Hunter and protector of Thra’s forests, he still lives in the wilderness. He carved his bow from a dead Sanctuary Tree and never missed a shot with it. Skek’sil calls for his aid to free Rian from a secure bastion called, the “Bastion of Sacrifice”. Skek’mal saves Rian and escapes with him. They bond to be friends and he inspires Rian to become a warrior. He almost escapes with him, but Archer - failing to stop him - is ordered by the other Mystics to commit suicide for his failure. Skek’mal dies defending Rian and remains a legend in gelfling tales.
(I re-uploaded it, since the original image was too small for the details. ^^;)
Day 14 of FOFebruary-Valentine's Day
---
"Hey SkekVar!" Lias called out, running down the hall past gelfling soldiers to catch up to The General.
SkekVar stops and turns around to wait on the human, assuming that they have something important to tell him. Possibly something from one of the other skeksis. Lias catches up to him, nearly out of breath from running around the castle trying to find him. They seem to be hiding something behind their back.
"Skek *huff* Var...*huff* I have *huff* something *huff* for you." They say.
SkekVar lets out a snort, "Well?" he asks, sounding rather impatient.
Lias huffs a few more times before presenting a box from behind their back. It's a burgundy rectangular box that has a black velvet bow tied around it. He takes no time at all untying the ribbon and opening the box. Placed inside are variously decorated chocolates.
"Happy Valentine's Day." They say with a shy smile.
SkekVar looks surprised, he had been present when the human explained various holidays to a few of the others when asked so he knew damn well what this tradition meant.
"Me?" He looked up at them and asked in disbelief. They had to messing with him, he knew it. He bets Chamberlain put them up to this.
"Yes you." They say with sincerity.
He looks down at the chocolate and back up at the human, "Really?" he asks completely perplexed.
"Yes really." They respond.
"Are you-"
"Yes I'm sure. I like you." They say with a completely serious look.
"Oh. I uh... wasn't expecting this." He snorts and looks away, a faint hint of pink shading his cheeks.
It's true, he never really expected the human to fall for someone like him when there were far more refined skeksis in the court, and he hadn't really expected to fall for them either, but he couldn't help himself when they managed to best him in training, or when they offered him sincere advice, or when they managed to chase the Chamberlain away when he was annoying SkekVar, but damned if he didn't fall hard. He just never imagined they'd feel the same so he never did anything about those feelings. But hearing this and receiving treats from Lias, he'd be lying if he said it didn't make him feel happy.
Lias gave the General a smile, "I made all of them different too, some have creme in them and some are flavored."
"You MADE these?"
"Yep."
Now it's extra special to him. Normally he'd just dig in but now he's gonna have to take his time eating these later.
"Th-thanks." He manages to get out with another snort, "I uh... don't have anything for you though."
"That's fine, I just want you to enjoy the candy I made for you, that's enough for me." They smile again.
He can practically feel love's arrow piercing his heart, "Do you uh...do you want to come watch me train some of the new recruits?" He asks hoping to show off to them.
"Yeah sure."
The two walk together and chat as they make their way to the courtyard training grounds, Lias subtly brushing their fingers against his every now and again just to see the General blush.
Also, skekZok. Can't separate the bros.
SkekZok the Ritual-Master
Why I like them
RA RA RASPUTÍN, LOVER OF THE RUSSIAN QUEEN-
legitimately though, I love his design and how over-the-top Dramatic Evil™ he is. He constrasts well when you look at skekGra's even more theatrical behavior. Plus, he can play the deadpan bystander role, too! Always great for comedic scenes, especially since he's such a despicable asshole that you don't feel bad when the joke or bit falls at his expense.
Also, I just like characters who enjoy the "scary" hobbies, since it offers a little more variety than "this guy likes art, this guy likes soccer, this guy likes singing", etc... The idea of Zok's knife collection is interesting, for example.
Why I don’t
As for things that don't also pertain to the other Skeksis... The "vigor" scene. Hilarious line, perfect delivery, disturbing context. Enough said.
Favorite episode (scene if movie)
This is less because of Zok, and more because of who he's playing off of, but definitely the Unamoth-snacking scene! The Skeksis puppets are incredibly expressive, and scenes like that definitely help show it off. The Gelfling puppets, like Mayrin, still feel a little Uncanny Valley to me - possibly why so many people in the fanbase like the villainous Skeksis, rather than the Gelfling heroes? - but it works well anyway, especially with their more nuanced expressions, and the Look™ Mayrin gets. That's what I call high-tech puppetry!
Favorite season/movie
Season 1 of AoR. He was good in the movie, but didn't have much of a distinct personality, in my opinion.
Favorite line
["What's wrong with that one's face?"] "I think it's just old."
look who's talking, Lord Horseshoe-Crab Teeth
Favorite outfit
The spa scene was pretty "meh" for me - Aughra was the best in that, so the rest kinda fades to the background - but Zok's vaguely triangle-shaped robe is p funny.
Otherwise, just his regular robes - notably, the red fabric lining the inside. It contrasts well.
OTP
Again, SoVarZok is a major rarepair (... raretrio?) of mine. I feel like So needs somebody to keep him in check, with how easily he might talk down to Var; Zok would be very useful for keeping the General's spirits up, I think, even when the Emperor acts cold towards him.
... Also, Zok likes a man with a high pain tolerance. Just gonna leave that there.
Brotp
Once again, Zok has a close bond with skekSo - one that they've been building up ever since they were exiled as Urskeks. It was rough at first, and they despised each other in the beginning, but by the Second Great Conjunction and the Split, they had already pushed through and cultivated an alliance that could've withstood the test of an eternity.
... Could've.
But death doesn't care about loyalty.
Head Canon
Zok didn't just want the throne in the movie for power's sake; he wanted it to carry on where So left off.
The dying Emperor likely made him swear upon his "free" life - as in, free from the Urru and Unity - that he would never lose sight or give up... But he would've done it with or without So telling him to. He doesn't like many people, but the few that he respects, he will give anything for.
Unpopular opinion
Not sure if this is an "unpopular opinion", but I do think he genuinely believes the teachings of his cult, and holds himself to its standards. Those aren't very good standards, true, but he's sticking to them.
... Also, I really, really dislike seeing him characterized as an aggressive creep. I know it's canon, it just makes me hella uncomfortable, so I don't """"write"""" (cough cough I haven't written fic in years cough) him the same way - still annoyingly blatant about his "interests", and it still ends up as other people's problem a lot, but not intentionally, and not maliciously. In this case, sadism takes a wildly different form for him depending on the context, and it's not nearly as brutal towards people he's attracted to. So, yeah, that's how I reconciled that
A wish
... More goofs? More goofs.
Preferably, ones that involve Gelfling, Podling and/or GRUENAK revenge
An oh-god-please-don’t-ever-happen
hey old man stop creeping
5 words to best describe them
Ra-Ra-Rasputin, Russia's Greatest Love Machine wait I already made that joke uhhhh
Intimidating / Gaudy / Sadistic / Melodramatic / Comedic
My nickname for them
Again, I mostly just call him by his name without the "skek" prefix, or by his title.
Unsurprisingly, I also sometimes call him Rasputin... And also, a few jokes at his expense that would get this post flagged immediately. I do a lot of Discord ranting.
in  a  commentary  that  can  be  found  on  some  copies  of  the  original  film,  henson  states  that  the  skeksis  are  sexless  beings  with  concepts  of  masculine  and  feminine,  expanded  material  states  that  jen  has  an  incredibly  base  concept  of  gender  as  he  was  raised  by  the  mystics,  and  the  collector's  puppeteer  stated  that  she  does  not  think  of  skeksis  as  male  or  female  and  that  they  tried  to  use  names  and  occupations  in  the  place  of  pronouns  (  which  i  have  noticed  is  the  case  in  most  scenes.  )  tldr;  the  skeksis  and  mystics  have  their  own  culture  surrounding  concepts  of  gender  that  is  very  different  from  our's.
you  could  argue  skekSo  is  one  of  the  more  avertly  masc  leaning  skeks  and  while  he  definitely  is  masc  i've  never  seen  him  as  being  on,  say,  the  garthim  master  or  general's  level.  there  are  multiple  instances  where  the  more  fem  aligned  skeksis  are  referred  to  as  ' lord '  which  is  a  typically  masculine  phrase  by  our  standards,  so  you  could  argue  that  they  do  not  view  emperor  as  a  gendered  word  or  they  don't  have  a  concept  of  gendered  words  at  all.  i  definitely  lean  towards  the  second  one  as  it  lines  up  with  the  mystics'  view  of  gender  and  the  skeksis  seem  to  call  most  creatures  ' it '  which  sounds  derogatory  at  first  but  then  i  read  the  lore  entry  where  the  scientist  uses  it  pronouns  instead  of  he.
my  portrayal  of  skekSo  does  lean  towards  he  /  him  pronouns  but  doesn't  mind  any  others,  he'll  respond  as  if  he  was  addressed  with  his  preferred  pronouns  no  matter  what  you  call  him  because  ultimately  they're  just  words  to  him,  they  hold  no  real  meaning.  skekSo  might  use  typically  masc  terminology  but  he  is  not  a  man  in  any  way,  if  you  ask  him  he'll  just  tell  you  out right;  he's  the  emperor,  nothing  more  nothing  less.
The void was quiet. Too quiet, to employ the cliche. The quiet rang through reality. The silence deafened, tore and stabbed and stretched, breaking at his senses until his senses simply shut down in protest.
Nothing made sense.
That was it, wasn’t it?
Nothing.
Nothing was hammering away at his brain, hitting out at him again and again. Nothing was pushing at the edges of his perception, screaming in his ear and yet utterly absent, silent, empty, gone, gone, gone…
Who am I? a thought raced through his mind. His thought? He couldn’t tell, he didn’t know. Why am I here? Where is here? What is here?!
Fear tore at his mind, and he frantically groped about his mind, searching for whatever was left of his sanity, until… until what? What was left? Was anything left?
Was anything left?
Was there anything to begin with, or was it all merely a facade, a lie I told myself?
No! We are… you are…
Who are you?
Who am I?
His mind gave him no answers in the long, dark silence.
***
The Solarin Empire Starship Legacy arrived at the edge of the Great Desolation almost quietly: the space around it empty, silent as the grave.
A poor omen.
The Legacy hung in the blackness of the infinite void like a silver arrowhead floating in a deep pool, a point of glinting metal and red-painted accents in an otherwise featureless space. So small she seemed that a casual observer might have feared that the space around her would just swallow her up. That fear was certainly shared by her crew.
Scuttlebutt throughout the ship had already done its cruel work: rumours of an invasion of dæmons or monsters from the Great Desolation abounded, conveniently ignoring the fact that dæmons were a fairy tale (not to mention that such an invasion would call for far more than a single Valiant-class cruiser as response), and that as much of an unknown as the great Desolation was, it was not officially home to dæmons, monsters or worse.
Still, by the time they had actually reached the coordinates of the distress beacon they were answering, the whole ship was permeated with a sense of unease, one that could even be felt on the vessel’s bridge, and even by her commanding officer.
Captain Reyla Dyjar’s ears were standing straight atop her head, her fur bristling with disquiet and her wide, yellow eyes unblinking as she stared at the observation screen. The Vyde has to force herself not to hold her breath in anticipation.
Next to her, she could see her XO, Commander Omar-3, sitting stiffly, even his normally calm expression tinged with unease. In fact, the dark-skinned, gene-modded human was positively frowning. Such a display was almost unheard-of for a man from the planet Mode, so set they were in creating perfect humans, free from such things as doubt and fear.
If even a damn Modal is scared, then we’re skekked, Dyjar thought, but she didn’t say it aloud. She was the Captain after all. And that means we must be more than merely Vyde, she admonished herself. It was a lesson she had drilled into herself a thousand times. Be aloof, be strong, be ready. Even when you are not. Especially when you are not.
She closed her eyes for a moment, and then she spoke, putting as much reassurance and authority into her voice as she could.
“Report.”
“I’m still picking up the automated beacon, Captain,” her comscan officer, another Vyde by the name of Lyrak, reported, frowning at his console. His console let out its usual bleeps and bloops, which – despite their somewhat insistent nature – Dyjar found oddly comforting. “Registers as the SES Babel, a science-corp vessel.”
“The Babel was reassigned last year,” Omar-3 said quietly to her. Trust him to know that immediately. “The research was highly classified, as I recall.”
“Might explain what in the hells they’re doing here,” Dyjar replied, scowling. “I can’t believe anyone would be stupid enough to come to the Great Desolation unless they were ordered to.”
“I concur,” Omar-3 agreed. He looked back at the screen, frowning. “May I recommend we take the ship to general quarters, Captain?”
“You think that’s a necessary precaution?” Dyjar queried.
“I think we’re responding to a distress signal from a ship at the edge of the Great Desolation,” Omar-3 replied, still speaking softly. “That, in and of itself, suggests caution would be apt.”
Dyjar nodded. “Very well.”
Omar-3 gave a very slight smile, before turning to his own console. He tapped a command.
“This is the bridge,” he said, his words echoing slightly through the Legacy’s comm system. “General quarters. All hands, man your battle stations. This is not a drill. Say again, all hands to battle stations.”
A loud klaxon sounded – once, twice, a third time – and every officer on the bridge stiffened, suddenly acutely aware of exactly how serious this situation had become.
Omar-3 glanced at Dyjar, who nodded at him, before he turned to their weapons officer. She was a Sevine woman named Daun; the stringy flesh-strands that sat where hair did on humans were tied back in a ponytail, and her normally blue skin was turning a shade of mottled grey as her emotions bled through.
“Charge particle cannons to full, raise defence fields,” Omar-3 said quietly.
“Aye, sir,” Daun replied shakily, checking her console. Her skin turned even darker grey. “Weapons at ready, defence fields at full strength.”
Omar-3 nodded. “Thank you, Daun.” He checked his console one more time, then turned to Dyjar. “All decks report general quarters, Captain.”
Dyjar let out an almost imperceptible sigh of relief. “Thank you, Commander.”
She tapped her armrest computer, bringing up the manifest of the SES Babel. Right at the top was a report about the Babel’s Captain, Uriel Locke: the image was of a stern man, mid forties, blue eyes, and a blue science-fleet uniform that looked immensely wrong on him. A brief skim-read of his record showed no sign of anything that might have convinced him to go rogue and take his ship into the Great Desolation for skeks and giggles. Then again, as anyone even peripherally familiar with that expanse of space knew, that was no guarantee that he hadn’t just spontaneously gone mad instead.
She straightened, before getting out of her chair. “Scan for the Babel.”
“The ship isn’t coming up on sensors, Captain,” Lyrak said, still frowning. “No debris, either. Correction,” he said, turning a dial on his console, “there is some debris, but not enough to account for a ship. Looks like a couple of destroyed evac pods.”
Dyjar nodded, accepting the grim news. “Any survivors?”
“There’s… I think I’m picking up one intact pod, Captain,” Lyran said. “Just the one. Registering a single life sign, human.”
“Activate tractor field, bring them in,” Dyjar said quietly. She looked at Omar-3, who was frowning. “Commander?”
“Hopefully this survivor will be able to give us some information,” Omar-3 said without elaborating. He looked at her. “If it’s all the same to you, Captain, I’d like to be there when they pull them out.”
“Of course,” Dyjar said, her eyes now focused on the observation screen.
As Omar-3 walked out of the bridge, Dyjar found herself wondering just what could have happened to the Babel. Her mind provided only the worst thoughts, and she suppressed them.
Do not let fear guide you. She marshalled herself. You are Captain. You guide fear.
It was a lie, one of many, but a comforting one.
Chapter 8 “Saviour”
The shadow slowly approached the woman laying on the floor, her body trembled in shock, and she could not prevent the uncontrolled sobs from escaping her lips. She breathed heavily through her nose as the figure knelt beside her, the sound of his steady breathing reaching her ears as he bent over her. Mara closed her eyes, pressing the eyelids together tightly in fear of another assault on her exposed body. But none of it happened, instead she was surprised by a sudden feeling of relief as the shackles around her wrists and ankles where ripped open and fell to the ground with a loud rattling sound that made her wince. Now that her extremities were freed, she curled up into a ball and wrapped her arms around her upper body to cover her exposed chest.
The rustling sound of fabric reached her ears and shortly after she felt how something warm was wrapped around her body. Next thing she knew were the pair of strong arms that were wrapped around her body and lifted her into the air, carrying her out of the dark room that she never wished to set a foot in again after this day. Mara could not see the face of the being that carried her through the hallways of the castle, as they were drowned in darkness. Whether he was her Saviour, or just another cruel soul that wanted to take advantage of her weakened state, she couldn’t tell. But no matter the case, she was to weak to fight, her legs felt like Jello and her ind was still in a state of shock.
She was carried through the hallways for quite some time, none of the corridors that they crossed seemed familiar to her. She had never been this deep beneath the Castle and the further her rescuer, or whatever he was. Walked, the colder and darker it seemed to get. Eventually he stopped, in front of them a huge wooden double door engraved with strange symbols that she had never seen before. With a creaking sound it swung open, revealing a dimly lit room. He stepped inside and walked towards a divan chair, which was lined with fabric of a crimson color, and gently placed her down onto the seat. Mara immediately grabbed the blanket that was wrapped around her body and pulled it up under her chin , only her head remaining visible. Her gaze slowly wandered over towards the figure, that walked towards a small alcove on the other side of the room. It was lined with large wooden shelves that kept glass bottles of different shapes and sizes that where filled with strange looking liquids. Another Shelve was filled with glass jars that stored all kinds of dried herbs, plants and mushrooms. A stone hearth stood in between the shelves, a fire crackling inside of it, heating up the iron pot that hung above it.
She observed him as he grabbed a few of the jars from the shelves and placed them on a small counter that stood in the center of the alcove. His claws reached inside the containers, pulling out a few of the dried ingredients before he placed them inside of a small bag of thin fabric, that he tied up with a piece of twine. With the help of the wooden ladle he poured some of the boiling water from the kettle inside of a small wooden cup and placed the bag of herbs inside of it.
“Who are you?” realizing to late, that she had actually spoken the words out loud, she covered her mouth with her hands, her fingers still clinging to the blanket, pulling it over her mouth. Her eyes went wide with fear as he approacher her again, his long robe dragging over the floor behind him, the steaming cup of Tea sitting between his claws.
He was one of them, a Skeksis, which she could tell by the long snout protruding from his face, but he looked so much different than the others of his Kin. He was tall, taller then all of the other Skeksis in the Castle and his body wasn’t bony or lanky like theirs. He had broad shoulders and his chest was muscular as she could see through the fabric of his robes that where clinging tightly to his torso. His clothes mostly consisted of white and blue shades with golden accents, which where quite unusual colors for a Skeks. His face too wasn’t as bony, his facial features smoother, making him look less morose and agonizing, almost benevolent. A full set of grayish-silver hair decorated his head, and was tied together in a loose braid, that ran down his back. But it where his bright turquoise eyes that caught her attention the most, they reminded her of the waters of the silver sea or the sky on a warm summer day. He was the most beautiful Skeksis she had ever seen.
He came to a halt in front of the divan, his claws reaching out to her, which made her wince and push herself against the Sofa, trying to get away from him. “Please don’t hurt me.” These words made him stop, slowly pulling back his arm “I wont” he assured her, his voice deep, melodic almost, not as raspy and shrill like those from the others of his kin. He placed the cup of tea on a small table next to the divan, knowing very well that she carefully observed each of his steps. “You should drink this, it will help you calm your nerves.”
“Who are you?” she asked the Skeks again, who was again wandering towards the alcove. Her voice was shaky and barely above a whisper, but it was loud enough to reach his ears.
He lightly turned his head in her direction “The ones I used to call my brethren gave me the name SkekVazur, the Alchemist, but I prefer to just be called Vazur now”
She swallowed hard before forming her next question “What are you doing with me now?”
Upon hearing the fear in her voice he turned towards her completely, his face showing no trace of evil or mischief “Nothing, I just wanted to bring you to a place where they will not find you, you are safe here, but you are free to leave, if that is your wish.”
Her gaze wandered over to the wooden door, what would happen if she left the room? A wave of different emotions ran through her mind, each connected to the many thoughts that did not allow her to calm down. SkekUng wouldn't stay unconscious forever. Maybe he would start searching for her, try to finish what he had started in the cold dusty chamber. Maybe he would kill her so the others would never hear of his assault on her. She wasn’t safe in the Castle anymore, not with SkekUng as the Emperor. But would she be save anywhere else? What would SkekEkt do if she would never return to her? She hadn’t seen her foster mother a lot after she had moved to the lower chambers of the Castle, but she had still visited her as often as her duties allowed her to, gifting some new gowns and Jewelry to Mara. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath in, one of her arms came crawling out from underneath the blanket and grabbed the cup of tea that still sat on the wooden table. She brought it to her nose and immediately her nostrils were filled with the lovely floral scent of the concoction. Her lips closed around the rim of the cup, leaving a wide enough gab for her to let the liquid flood her mouth and play around with her taste buds. Valerian Root, Honeymoss and Hogweed, all these Aromas mixed together into a symphony of flavors.
She immediately felt the soothing effect of the brew, her thoughts calmed down and her body stopped shacking. When she opened her eyes, Vazur stood in front of her, a folded piece of clothing in his hand “Here, you can put these on” he said and turned around, giving her some privacy while she dressed in the robes, that were way to big for her, but they would have to do for now. “I have never seen you in the Castle before, why are you not with the others Skeksis?”
His brows furrowed slightly “I….left them a long time ago, I do not exactly feel of them as my brethren anymore?”
She draped the robes over her body and sat down on the chair again, taking another sip of the tea “I can tell that you are not like them, there is something different about you, who are you”
“I told you already, my name Is Vazur.”
A weak smile formed on her lips “You told me your name, but that still does not tell me who you are, please, I only want to know who my Saviour is.”
A soft sigh escaped his lips before he turned around and sat on the far end of the Divan “Do you now the story about the Urskeks and the Great Division?
She nodded in response, SkekEkt had told her everything about it, The UrSkeks were beings that had been banished from their home planet and came to Thra, they sought to purify themselves to get back to their Home world through the Crystal during the second great conjunction. But instead of being sent home, each of the fallen UrSkeks were inadvertently divided into two separate beings, the Evil and violent Skeksis, and the gentle and contemplative UrRu. They were however still connected to one another, if one part of them died, the other would do so as well.
“Good” he said and continued to explain “I was there too, during the Great division, but something went wrong, the personalities of me and my UrRu self got exchanged, UrJellak got the evil and destructive soul that was originally intended for me, while his was planted inside my body. The others living in the Castle soon realized that I was different, where they sought immortality and power, I searched for answers, answers that would allow us to return to our former selves. But they would not listen to me, their greed turned them into incorrigible beings, lead by the fear of death. And even though they keep the Crystal of truth as their slave, it is them that have become slaves to the Crystal.”
As he continued to tell her the story she realized how few she actually new about the Skeksis, there were a lot of things she didn’t new about them and their plans for Thra. But then it did not really surprise her, as she was never allowed to leave the Castle. All that she knew about the outside world she had heard from the stories SkekEkt had told her when she had been a child but she had never seen it herself. They had always told her that they were trying to rule over it to bring back order and justice but their real intentions were to drain the Essence of the Gelflings to turn themselves immortal and now there were only two Gelflings left, fighting for existence. She didn't know how to feel about all these newly achieved information, it was to much to process for one day, especially after what happened earlier. But sadly the bad news wouldn’t stop there.
“What happened then? Why are you down here?” Mara asked.
“They first started their unethical experiments on me, trying to exchange the soul of me and my UrRu self but things didn’t go as planned so they banished me into the lower floors of the Castle to prevent me from disturbing their experiments and crossing their plans. That's when I realized that hope for them is lost, they wont turn from their plans, even if it means to banish the ones of their own kind.”
Mara sighed, her heart felt Heavy and her soul crushed “I cant imagine they are this cruel, they experimented on me as well, but it was just to save my life, I would be dead if it wasn’t for them, well some of them.”
A small chuckle escaped Vazur’s snout “Do you really think they tried to keep you alive because they care for you? They saved you so that your powers could serve them in the future, you are nothing but a tool to them, a tool that they used to hunt down the Gelflings and bring the Garthim to life, it is the Darkening that has destroyed a lot of Thra, and will still continue to do so as long as the Skeksis keep misusing the Crystal.”
Was that true, this they really use her own powers without her consent? Did SkekEkt knew about this? Had she lied to her all these years? No this couldn't be, it couldn't it just…
“Do you want to see it?”
His deep voice ripped her from her thoughts “What?”
“Do you wish to see the outside, see for yourself what the Darkening has caused?” for a moment she thought he had ost his patience with her, bot he stayed calm and collected, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Yes”
