Thrawn and Anakin, to me at the very least, are incredibly compelling characters on account of the fact that -and this is an extreme simplification- they don't always make the right choices, but they do them for 'good' (read: easy to sympathize with) reasons that end up being their respective downfalls.

Thrawn's whole thing in the is the preservation and protection of his people. Seemingly every action he takes from the moment he joins the Mitth family all the way up until he ends up getting Space-Whaled at the end of Rebels is taken in service of the Chiss Ascendancy. He's willing to give up their most important secrets (re: the Sky-Walkers) to The Emperor, thus weakening them as a whole, in order to save them. If he hadn't been space-whaled, and Sheev hadn't been killed, the Ascendancy would've been in helluva lot more trouble than just by the Grysks. Especially with how Palpatine already had his sights on the Unknown Regions. That's to say nothing about how Sheev is known to have treated other Force Sensitive cultures (the destruction of the Jedi. the Guardian of the Whills. The Lasat. Hell, the man even perverted the Rule of Two with the Sith by cloning himself and intentionally keeping Vader from taking over)

Anakin, on the other hand, is a man who just couldn't stop himself from caring about the people he called his friends to the point of removing their agency entirely when it came to life-or-death situations, especially in Padmé's case. Shmi, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, Palpatine, Padme, his clones - all of them he'd gladly put his life on the line for, even die for them if the situation called for it, and Palpatine took notice of that and used it to his advantage - turning the Jedi's chosen one, to whom he never truly saw as a family on account of them seemingly fearing his power*, into a willing accomplice of their destruction by dangling the life of Padmé and his unborn child(ren) over his eyes and orchestrating a situation in which the Jedi would never have granted him the rank of Master (which, per the Revenge of the Sith novelization, says that it would have allowed him to access the archives he believed would have contained something that may have saved their lives)
