17. Ok, so I wasn't looking very hard in my history, but I can’t seem to find a particular fic. It was specifically Pheonix!wwx, who was imprisoned by the Wen, and no one knew about him even being there until lwj gets captured and put in his room. He says the only reason lwj got put with him is because the Wen are likely going to kill him, like everyone else who got put in wwx's room. Instead, wwx and lwj take care of each other and wwx plans an escape for lwj. I think Meng Yao helps (and I THINK he ends up good,) and lwj promises to come back for wwx. Wwx gives him his crystallized tears to keep him from dying of injuries as he escapes.

The Sunshot campaign is in full swing and I don't remember if wwx escaped himself and lwj picked him up part way or if lwj got him out, but wwx gets out and turns the tides of the war by setting things on fire.

18. Hi! I've been looking everywhere for a certain Untamed time travel fanfic. It mostly took place in Lotus Peer. Wei Ying is an inventor. If I'm remembering correctly he has a lot of talismans, and he eventually goes to become a registered talisman maker?

He makes a different spiritual weapon for Madame Yu so she can pass Zidan to Jiang Cheng early, and he makes cool gifts for everyone in his family. I remember that Jiang Cheng got his gift last and it was a second golden core in a cage so that if Core Melting Hand got him again it would break the fake core.

It is absolutely wild to me how people can equate JC's and WWX' journey throughout MDZS and be like "They BOTH went through terrible things and sacrificed a lot for each other!!!1!!1 They should leave the past behind and make up!" Or even worse, when it's suggested that JC has any right to be mad or grieve over the golden core reveal and it will completely reverse their roles when WWX finds out about JC's sacrifice.

Yes, they have both sacrificed for one another and have wronged one another. But there are NUANCES here - one is not like the other!! WWX has carved out the very essence if himself, cultivated over decades in an excruciating, life-threatening procedure over the course of 3 days to save JC's life and legacy. Yes, he lied about it. Yes, he lied about it for a long time. Yes, the lie entailed a not inconsiderable amount of shame for Yunmeng Jiang through his "disrespect" as head disciple. No, this does not even out the sacrifice made.

First of all, the lie was as necessary for Yunmeng Jiang's survival as it was for WWX' and JC's dignity. The sect just rebuilt with the most powerful person alive as head disciple - this very head disciple is coreless? Very killable if you get half a chance? Powerful yes, but more vulnerable than previously thought possible. The sect leader of this sect uses the golden core of the son of a servant? Couldn't even keep his own? Vulnerable, vulnerable, vulnerable. Something all JC stans agree, Yunmeng Jiang couldn't afford at the time. And I can't believe it has to be said but having sacfriced something like a golden core and being lied to about it are NOT equally terrible things happening to a person! Plus, JC was only lied to about the specifics - he knew the core was not his. Does the transfer entail a whole lot emotional baggage that would have influenced his decision on it big time? Yes!!! But the general idea is not news to him.

And yes, JC distracted the guards from WWX, losing his golden core as a result. Did he intend to lose his golden core? NO!!! Would he have done it if he knew what it would cost him? Maybe. Personally, I'm leaning to No given his state after the loss, but one could argue probably along similar lines for WWX and his decision was a measured, deliberate one, even discussing it with others beforehand. Point being, JC did not sacrifice his golden core for WWX. He impulsively distracted the guards, resulting in the loss, but he never made a conscious decision as WWX did. And he did blame WWX for it. He never told him but he blamed him for the fall of Lotus Pier and everything else that happened after.

WWX was bitter over JC losing his golden core for something he thought was a reckless stunt. Which it was, but for him, not for his parents. Which WOULD change much about his perception of himself and his position in his former sect, but not all of it. The point remains that JC chose to let him go. JC chose to blame him for everything that happened to him and his family, while knowing it was wrong. JC chose to lie to himself and blame WWX because it was easier for him to cope. JC chose to lay siege to the Burial Mounds to kill his former martial brother and dozens of innocents because he refused to confront these lies.

These are things not like the other and when comparing their respective actions it's clear that it's a whole pile of a toxic mess - lies, sacrifices no one asked for, bitterness and longing. But but - there is a clear cut who acted consciously to damage the other and who sought to protect the other - in toxic ways, yes - but with the best tools he had at the time.

#i am symathetic to him but he is a huge trash goblin and does not have his life together #which always irritates me when fic casts him as a collected guy who is perpetually Done with wwx #jc did not adequately navigate or even recognize the power structures intrinsic to his relationship w/ wwx #he grew up calling wwx brother but being taught wwx is lesser than. a servant. indebted #and his expectations on wwx were always in conflict with at least one of these things #wwx experiencing disproportionate amounts of abuse in jiang household since childhood was normal to him #of course he couldn't always stand up for wwx but it reflects in his own treatment of wwx too #and when wwx chose to put his morals above lotus pier jc could not understand #and when wwx was in a politically terrible place jc did not act to support him as a brother or share responsibility as a superior #jc was so ready to ignore the wen remnants for political peace & renege on his debts to wq and wn #he did nothing because he was a child not equipped to deal with those politics #but even later he's not a good leader. torturing dark cultivators. scaring his people into avoiding his sect's help #jc is not. a good person #he's not a good politician either #which isn't to say i don't like him #i just don't like certain fics which give him the moral high ground on wwx too much #& honestly with a lifetime of 'serve & die for jc and jyl' indoctrination & few clues that jc reciprocated his loyalty in any way #i can't blame wwx for transferring his core #like i feel its so telling that when jc was upset he made it habit to say cruel things to wwx and wwx always acted to soothe him #thats not. healthy. or acceptable. its a symptom of them living in an abusive household. & at some point jc should have realized #& apologized. or something #as an adult at least #anyway long story short:::: #jc's and wwx's relationship breaking down was not wholly wwx's fault! & it's not just him who should have communicated better #anyway idk jc sure is a multi facetted character & very interesting to explore if one is interested in #the 'young heir of broken family thrust into leadership position unexpectedly' trope playing out realistically

I wondered what would make WN actually want to fight against the sunshot campaign and the Jiangs and I thought.... What if YZY was alive to demand WWX give his golden core to JC? And that WWX agrees out of misplaced guild and blame from YZY. I think WQ would initially against it but tells WWX in private that he should stay with WN and WQ after the transfer where they would hide and protect him seeing how he's treated. WWX agrees after being convinced that he can't be useful for the Jiangs.

YZY watched as WWX endured the transfer with no sympathy. WN and WQ are peeved as she  mutters about the transfer taking forever, questioning WQs abilities, and threats if JC is harmed. The transfer was a success and WWX thanks the siblings before leaving the area before JC wakes up. YZY also leaves following WWX. WN follows WWX wanting to give him something for the pain. When he witnesses YZY killing WWX saying that her husband is no longer here to interfere, and says he outlived his usefulness

WN is furious but his combat power isn't very strong so YZY mocks him for being a Wen Dog saying that he, WQ and WWX are just giving them their dues with zero remorse and that she was simply avenging herself. The Jiang duo leave the mountains, and wen siblings are seething and grieving for WWX. WN decides to avenge his friend.

I think people literally forget that WWX had people to feed and had no food to give them. And they still think he had the time to think about the feeling Lan Zhan could have for him? They were starving!!!!!! Even if just that was happening, it was enough. You can't think clearly when you are starving, when people you love are starving. People should stop looking at WWX's life like it was easy and simple enough that he had time to think about romantic love.

Wei Wuxian is trying to keep people alive on the single most inhospitable piece of land whilst guarding against the entirety of the cultivation world on all sides and ppl are like: ugh WWX didn't have time? to moodboard his feelings? and then somehow read Lan Wangji's mind? dumbass oblivious clumsy chaos gremlin!!! >:-/

People also forget that in WWX's first life Wangji's view of ghost path cultivation is still unfavorable and WWX is stuck because he can't explain to him that it's because he literally has no other choice without revealing the core transfer that he can't reveal. He still touches upon it when LWJ visits the Burial Mounds and look at this parallel- WWX when he first theorized cultivating w resentful energy in the Cloud Recesses:

“Jiang Cheng warned, “That’s enough. It’s fine if you talk about it, but don’t actually walk such a crooked path.”

Wei WuXian smiled, “Why would I leave the nice, broad road, and walk on a single-plank bridge on a dark, narrow river instead? If it really is that easy, people would have already walked on it. Don’t worry, he was just asking, and I was just answering. Hey, are you guys coming? Since it’s not curfew yet, hunt for pheasants with me.”

Wei Wuxian tried to communicate this to Lan Wangji when LWJ visited the Burial Mounds:

He continued, “Give up the demonic path? Then what about the people on this mountain? Give them up? I won’t be able to do it. I believe that if you were I, you wouldn’t be able to do it either.”

He continued, “Nobody can give me a nice, broad road to walk on. A road where I could protect those I want to protect without having to cultivate the ghostly path.”

Lan WangJi gazed at him. He didn’t reply, but both of them knew the answer in their hearts.

There was no such road. No solution existed.

“Wei WuXian spoke slowly, “Thank you for keeping me company today. Thank you for telling me the news about my shijie’s marriage too. But, let the self judge the right and the wrong, let others decide to praise or to blame, let gains and losses remain uncommented on. I, too, know what I should and shouldn’t do. I believe that I’ll be able to control it as well.”

As if he’d anticipated such an attitude since a long time ago, Lan WangJi nodded slightly and closed his eyes.

And that marked their farewell.”

Wei Wuxian was as honest he could be with Lan Wangji without revealing his sacrifice. While Lan Wangji is starting to trust Wei Wuxian's heart, he doesn't yet fully. Even so, when push comes to shove at Nightless City, Lan Wangji choses to stand by Wei Wuxian regardless:

but by then WWX was too out of it to hear or understand, and they don't get another chance until Wei Wuxian's second life. Lan Wangji now choses not only to accept whatever consequences Wei Wuxian may face, he puts his faith fully in Wei Wuxian's morality and heart and he's rewarded. By the time the core reveal comes around he has the privilege of being on Wei Wuxian's side, of being the person Wei Wuxian trusts with his safety. Things between them happen in their due time and it makes for a wonderful, natural progression as they grow towards each other.

When people claim that WWX learning the truth about JC giving himself up to the Wen soldiers to protect him would make WWX do a total 180 in his attitude towards JC, it’s such a complete misunderstanding of their dynamic! It’s JC who actually needed to learn that WWX sacrificed his golden core to consider hating him a bit less, but the point is that WWX never resented or hated JC during his lives. Not when JC blamed him for the fall of Lotus pier, not when JC strangled him, not when JC kicked1/4

him out of the clan and deserted him, not when JC tried to kill him after rebirth, not when JC berated WWX in the funerary hall or in the temple. Unlike JC, WWX never tried to directly harm JC in the story and sacrificed himself multiple times in order to protect him (to protect his feelings even!) while JC told blatant lies about WWX being the enemy of all clans in an effort to sabotage him, killed/lead an assault against him and then spend a decade torturing people who might have looked lik2/4

WWX. WWX kept loving JC despite how JC behaved or how WWX was treated in return, but it’s just that in the end, WWX decided that he was done and it’s a fair decision imho to exit JC’s life considering that JC always goes on and on about how WWX being here ruined it, and then to let JC make the first steps, if JC’s willing. Even if you want to look at it from a pure debt standpoint and dismiss the GC gift bc ~JC didn’t consent~, WWX had already repaid the debt of JC’s sacrifice by immediately3/4

rushing to save him for the Wens’ jail in an act that wasn’t less desperate or had more probability to succeed than JC’s. WWX only didn’t end up being captured and killed by a sheer chance meeting with the Wen siblings, but the absolute hopelessness of WWX’s rescue attempt is overlooked in the fandom bc of protagonist armor and bc we just knew WWX wouldn't die at that point in the story.4/4

yeah. the core transfer justifies and provides context for much of wei wuxian's strange behaviour and questionable choices, so it's important for jiang cheng - who has for years resented wei wuxian and been a threat to his safety - to understand what wei wuxian's real debts and motivations were. wei wuxian has never similarly resented jiang cheng & his wariness is a reaction to behaviours jiang cheng displayed completely independently from his hidden sacrifice, so learning about it wouldn't change the situation at all tbh. i can't even say it sheds new light on jiang cheng's assertion that wei wuxian ruined his life, because jiang cheng didn't actually have to feel the consequences of his decision for any significant amount of time (thanks to wwx btw!)

good points abt wei wuxian putting himself in danger to retrieve jiang cheng! it is quite similar to jiang cheng's sacrifice - both brothers putting themselves in harm's way in a desperate attempt to save the other - and i've honestly never thought of that. ig wei wuxian had better odds & results but there's something to be said about how much he protects and takes care of jiang cheng during this time, and how much he sacrifices for him

so! i feel like i've mentioned the ''jc and wwx share a body / wwx kinda sorta possesses jc because golden core transfer bullshit'' au enough that i can now talk about a subplot taking place in that au (that probably wouldn't fit in the main narrative anyway even if i were actually writing this au)

the au takes place about 5 years after wwx's death in the burial mounds (going with novel canon for this one), and the subplot in particular takes place a few months after wwx's consciousness awakens and they realise they are stuck together - they have processed some trauma and talked some things over already but jc hasn't found out about the transfer yet - they have been busy lately because oh shit! jin rusong got murdered! - anyway. the subplot.

they (jc's body with them two in it, that is) go on a nighthunt together with some disciples to investigate a curse. there's something causing people from a nearby village to lose their memory, and in worse cases to completely lose their sense of self - they are breathing and walking and eating, but it's like they are animals: they can't talk, they act purely on instincts, etc. hohoho, something's eating their souls. so they go to investigate and it's bad! they find the monster but it goes awful, one of the disciples gets their memory wiped out.

jc being jc blames himself and gets angry and reckless (well yes theres also wwx in his head being equally angry and reckless and blaming himself) and goes against the monster on his own the next day and. obviously. loses and passes out.

someone finds him passed out on the ground and wakes him, but it's not him who wakes up. it's wei wuxian, and it's like he's alone in the body now, and he freaks out.

they trust each other now enough that jc let him take control of the body quite a few times, they practiced swordriding and nighthunting and all with switching control, but it's the first time he can't hear jc's voice in their head, and it's awful, because what if he doesn't fix this?? he will have to pretend to be jiang cheng forever, and if anyone discovers it's actually him they are going to kill him because yiling laozu posing as the leader of one of the big sects is not fucking ideal. especially since, as i said, rusong got murdered a few weeks ago and everything is very complicated in the cultivation world rn.

so he does his best to pretend to be jc, and the disciples know he's fought the monster but hey, somehow he still has his memories and is conscious so hurray! jiang zongzhu is such a powerful cultivator, nothing can take him down! morale boost etc etc, meanwhile wwx is screaming internally 24/7.

anyway they do beat the monster eventually and jc comes back and is proud and screams about it a little. the end

and soon after that it's time for the golden core reveal in the main plot, so he's gonna be screaming a lot more in the upcoming days

Wei Wuxian is selfish, actually~ is the deeper meaning of mdzs? I can't believe I had to read this with my own two eyeballs. Exactly how low is the reading comprehension on this site lmfao. Was his decision to give his golden core to Jiang Cheng without telling him Not A Great Idea™? Yes I think so. Objectively giving your "organ" to someone and not telling them is fucked up. But was it selfish? Exactly how? It was arguably the result of his upbringing and him feeling indebted to the Jiangs. He said it himself if I remember correctly that without the Jiangs he wouldn't have a gc anyway so he owes it to them. Which feels like unhealthy attitude to have towards oneself but like the exact opposite of selfishness. If we tried to stretch this to max, one could argue that wei wwx keeping the transfer itself a secret was selfish because he didn't want Jiang Cheng mad at him. But Jiang Cheng was mad at him anyway and if that theory was true, if Wuxian did give up his core for selfish reasons and because he's somehow selfish then this would be the first thing he'd throw into Jiang Cheng's face the second he needs to guilt trip him. You know? Like Jing Huangyao did to Xichen with "Didn't I take care of you?" in the Guanyin temple. sorry for the rant

tbh i think the person who bore the worst of the bad decision of the golden core transfer was wwx himself. its one of the main factors that lead to his downfall and then his death. jc wouldnt have been able to be the sect leader, but it would have been his family pride and his own that would have been hurt in this situation. im sure given time he would have been able to make something out of himself, plus at this stage he was already out of immediate danger, so he wouldn't have been able to fight in the war, but he could have stayed alive but sticking to his sisters side.

wwx tho, through giving up his golden core, was immediately beaten and thrown off a cliff where he had to survive in corpse hell for three months, inventing a heretic path that made him unbelievably powerful but also an enemy because of said unknown power, and then died.

like clearly giving up his core here was the worse option here for everyone but jiang cheng. but like you said, this version of wwx would always give up his golden core for jiang cheng, because he thought it was what was owed to him, that he didnt have any right to a core if jc didnt because without the jiangs he wouldnt have had a chance to cultivate one in the first place. and again like you said, this is a really unhealthy way to look at it, because ultimately the golden core was his and no one elses, he cultivated it using his own talent and merits and how powerful he was really had nothing to do with the jiangs. its the same thought process he had about yzy cuttin off his hand, than he would gladly lose a hand for the sect, because that was what is expected of him. to give up every little bit of himself for the jiang sect, whether or not they ever repaid back that loyalty to him like... at all. he was expected to blindly follow along whether they treated him well or not.

and youre right, if we stretch it you could argue that wwx didnt tell jc about it because he didnt want to have to deal with him getting angry at him. but also, i think the main reason he didnt tell him is because he knew what sort of mentality jc had, and that jc wouldnt see this as a sacrifice wwx was willing to make for the jiang sect, but rather wwx trying to one up him once again. tbh wwx doesnt even view this as a noble sacrifice on his part, he did it because he believed it to be his duty, and i dont really blame him for not wanting to deal with jcs bullshit over it when he could just pop his core into him and they can all go about his life (but heres where wwxs actual flaw is, believe that everyone can let things go as easily as he can. which is clearly not the case, and it leads him into situations such as this one).

and thats also a good point, if he did it for selfish reasons, what was stopping him after he came back to life and jc was trying to capture him, from rubbing it in his face?? trying to make jiang cheng suffer for spending a decade obsessed with finding him and using his own core to whip demonic cultivators in effort to prove it was wwx. why wouldnt he use this to his advantage to try and escape the blame that jc constantly puts on him. because he didnt do it to hold over jiang cheng or to help himself sleep at night, he gave up his core because thats what he believed he should've done as a head disciple/to pay back his debt, thats about as deep as it was for him.

With all the "it was an experimental procedure without consent" nonsense statements re the gc transfer, you would think that XXC giving SL his eyes would come up as something similar. But the only commentary I really see about it is "XXC/SL can't do math. Each should get one eye." Almost like the sacrifice... was a big deal for both parties and was done out of love/duty. But that can't *possibly* bear any resemblance to what WWX did, can it? How would we defend JC being Like That otherwise? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, it’s a whole thing because XXC and SL and the eye thing is (I’m pretty sure) a deliberate parallel to the golden core transfer! But the difference is that when SL learned what XXC had done and sacrificed for him he realised his anger and the blame he laid at XXC’s feet for the destruction of his sect were wrong and he spent pretty much the rest of his life trying to find XXC and apologize. XXC sacrificed his sight out of love for SL, and when SL learned of that it reminded him of his love for XXC and he realised he’d made a mistake in lashing out at him. Also XXC presumably didn’t feel the need to hide what he’d done from SL, given... well, SL knows, it’s not a secret. The eye sacrifice (and in fact all of SL and XXC’s story) is a clear show of mutual love and respect and a desire to help the person they care for and do their best to be good to them. XXC didn’t ask because he wanted to save his friend and probably because he felt guilty; SL isn’t angry at him for it because he knows why XXC did it. He just wants to apologise for doubting him and offer what support he can. 

Meanwhile the golden core transfer is... frankly kind of horrifying. It’s WWX handing over everything he has without hesitation and getting less than nothing in return. Keep in mind that even before learning the truth JC knew WWX had sacrificed something he could never get back, he just thought it was WWX’s chance at ever meeting his grandmother or learning about his family instead of his golden core; you’d think that would be worth at least a show of gratitude, wouldn’t you? WWX loses his cultivation, and the “thanks” he gets is being betrayed a few years later. It’s a show of devotion and love, but it is entirely one-sided. And then when JC does learn what WWX did for him, he does the exact opposite of what SL did. SL reconsidered the guilt he’d flung at XXC, thinking it through and realizing that what happened wasn’t XXC’s fault; JC doubles down, despite knowing from the start that WWX wasn’t to blame. So you see, if you want to insist JC was never unfair to WWX you can’t judge the golden core transfer in the same terms you judge the eye transfer. Any direct comparison between the two makes JC look even worse than he does without that comparison, so the golden core transfer can’t be a sacrifice like the eye transfer is; it has to be an attack, something done to JC against his will, because that is the only way to make JC’s response anything close to justifiable. Basically, SL’s reaction to XXC’s sacrifice is such that there’s no reason for his fans to twist it into a wrong committed against him; he’s heartbroken at the cost to someone he loves and horrified at how badly he misjudged XXC, but he’s also grateful and wants nothing more than to find a way to return the favour and give XXC whatever support he can. Meanwhile JC’s reaction to the golden core transfer is such that the only way to make him look sympathetic is to twist it into a wrong committed against him, because otherwise... well, “ungrateful” is the kindest word for his reaction by far.

15. Hi! So I have three fanfics that I can't seem to find and I don't know if I can send all at once or just one per request, but just in case I will leave them here:

A) A modern au in which both are young adults (I guess the title has something to do with rain/water), LZ is studying (?), WY is bored and starts trying to get LZ's attention. Soon they start rolling on the floor, the moment ends up creating a sexual tension between them and WY suggests LZ to fuck him, so they have sex.

B) Another modern au fic in which WY is accused of a crime when he's younger, perhaps in his teens (I don't remember what he did exactly or if he actually committed it), but he still ends up getting arrested and LZ is the only one who stood up to him at the time. Then a couple of years later WY is released, becomes a police officer and works together with LZ at the same police station, probably as partners. I think LZ is kinda ooc, instead of being shy, quiet and frigid, he's quite bold and sweary in this fic. Also I recall a specific part that is set by the end of the story (it could be the last chapter), a party is happening, maybe a wedding or celebration of some sort, and Wangxian goes to the bathroom to hook up or have sex. There's a chance that this belongs to another fic, but it doesn't hurt to try.

C) Last but not least, a fic that takes place during the Sunshot Campaign or a little after it, where WY goes back to Gusu, but I don't remember if willingly or against his will. At first I think he is isolated in the house that belonged to LZ's mother. He is super angry, traumatized and sometimes emotionless, he even treats LZ really bad, especially for being made some sort of prisioner. I remember the two of them having heated arguments about the situation, then it gets to a certain point when they both start to understand each other and end up together.

LWJ (human) crashes his spaceship Bichen on a planet that has a lot of red colors in different hues. And then he stays there waiting for his brither when alien!WY steals his forehead ribbon. He has limited speech here but they can understand each other. Turns out WY was exiled or something on the planet bcs he protected a bunch of ppl (so the Wens basically). They do the deed when WY gets a heat. By the end of the fic, LXC does find LWJ on the planet and WY announces that he can feel the baby (alien senses, idk) and he wears a Baby on Board tshirt. 18. Hello Mods - I'm looking for two specific fics, both are post canon.

A) is a case fic with a haunted manor. Everybody was trapped in the house. In the courtyard the servants are slowly turning to terracotta. They grind and break as they try to carry out their tasks. In another room theres a set of people, frozen in time, just before one of them takes a fatal injury.

19. I have lost a fic I'm desperate to find again; so I only remember... like... One and a half??? Maybe two collective scenes???? but it was a fic specifically pertaining to a magical property of the Lan forehead ribbons, where the Lan's spouses were ALWAYS able to take off their Lan's ribbon, no matter how knotted or intricately tied it was because magic, and after the cold pond cave wwx had pulled it off in public, once earlier in the fic, I don't remember if it was the Qishan hunt or somewhere else, when he had no idea what happened or why everyone is surprised (until lwj explains later after angsting for a bit and has him pull it off in private) and then again at the very end of the fic after they confess. Specifically remember lwj saying his ribbon was looped in his hair 5 times. Thanks for the help!!

I'm the anon who send the JC's angst time prompt. And I love how you wrote it. It made me think in a second part where they knock JC out to perform the transfer. That he wakes up with a core he shouldn't have. With his mothers spiteful remarks toward WWX, his father asuring him WWX is safe and his sister's soup. JC's drowing in anger and shame. He can't bring himself to hate/blame his parents (1/2).

He can only blame WWX and looking for him with LWJ. Then WC told him they had thrown WWX to BM. And all his feelings explode he goes in a qi deviation, he kills WC, WZL and almost his allies, but he was stoped by LWJ. When he wakes up he's the only who can see WWX's ghostly figure around. (2/2)

When Jiang Cheng wakes up he is in a carriage with his parents and sister and he feels a strong golden core inside of him. He immediately begins to scream and has to be restrained. He keeps demanding to know where Wei Wuxian is, if he's ok, please say it's not his, please, say it's not his brothers core. He screams until his mother gags him.

His mother lectures and his father tries to side step issues and his sister half heartedly mediates and somehow an explanation is pieced together. Wei Wuxian managed to convince Wen Qing to do the surgery while Jiang Cheng was unconcious. His mother managed to make contact with her family in Meishàn and insisted that they leave immediately after the surgery. Wei Wuxian was in a fragile state after the surgery and needed more time to recover. Jiang Fengmian promised to take Wen Qing's family in and protect them if Wen Ruohan found out she had helped them in exchange for hiding Wei Wuxian while he recovered. The family left without Wei Wuxian.

They reassure Jiang Cheng that Wei Wuxian would make his own way to Meishan after he recovers. They have bigger things to worry about. A war to plan and a sect to rebuild.

Wei Wuxian never joins them in Meishan.

that shot of wwx rowing the boat out in the rain while jyl and jc sit inside, like he's actually their servant, always makes me want to throw things. like you treat him like this and act like you don't know why he keeps sacrificing himself and putting himself down? 😒

wei wuxian, after watching his adoptive parents act affectionate towards his siblings but order him to die for them if need be AND having the responsibility for his sect's destruction placed squarely on his shoulders, spends the entire journey away from lotus pier looking after his siblings and rowing them around and checking on jiang yanli's health and keeping jiang cheng out of danger and doing the absolute most to protect them no matter how miserable he clearly is. all while jiang cheng alternates between using wei wuxian as a punching bag and just straight up ignoring him. sweet

i can't honestly blame jiang yanli and jiang cheng for this since they're also... grieving a horrific loss and dealing with newfound extreme trauma while in a dangerous situation, but it does establish a pattern of behaviour that leads to things like wei wuxian agreeing to the core transfer within seconds of discovering it & figuring it'd be easy to hide because he's gonna die anyway! the specific events that occurred and the way he was treated throughout were so deeply formative for the person he winds up becoming & the fact that people still act clueless as to why he keeps sacrificing himself IRKS me!!!

i was reading a fic that was pretty good but it had jyl and jc find out about the core transfer and that's always such a gamble. like it's so popular to have jyl go girlboss over her lack of agency...at wwx, who is horrifically traumatized and literally not in control of his mental faculties, not to mention is selfless to a painfully unhealthy degree. like the fic i just read had her getting angry that wwx "sent her away" to do the core transfer and how victimized both she and jc were by wwx's choice. ironically, the essential core of the argument that jc (and jyl? ig?) is a victim of the core transfer not only relies on the idea that jc was healed (like literally HEALED) without his consent but that it's only so bad because he accepted it without knowing the pain wwx would go through to pull it off. you'd think then that people wouldn't try to ignore the pain wwx went through, the huge cost he paid, but they do. the whole point of this rose tinted view of jc's anger about the core transfer is that he supposedly cares that wwx suffered in his place. without even getting INTO how like, demonstrably false that is; somehow this means that jc actually suffered More and somehow has this right to act like a fool, where wwx is a demon for having understandable trauma responses that never ever intentionally/maliciously hurt his loved ones (unlike jc who copes BY hurting people on purpose). tbh i don't get why it's popular now to pretend like it's revolutionary to have the mentally ill characters get berated for their self destructive behavior by other characters instead of being treated with empathy. and what's with this trend of other characters getting so smug and dismissive about another character confronting their issues or getting treatment like "oh you finally got your shit together?" or getting mad that a character is "wallowing in self pity" like the stigma against mentally ill and disordered people is so present despite it also being romanticized in the worst ways.

i think one thing people miss when trying to justify jiang cheng's anger over the core transfer is that jiang cheng wasn't... actually angry about the core transfer? his outrage was explicitly tied to the idea that wei wuxian managed to justify the behaviour / pay off the debts jiang cheng spent years hatefully obsessing over. he never says how dare you do this to me, i didn't want this, i never wanted you to do this; he says why can't i hate you, do you think this is enough to repay me, etc etc. he's angry not because wei wuxian harmed him, but because wei wuxian helped him. wei wuxian has retroactively invalidated the reason jiang cheng has been stewing in anger and hunting people down for years, and he can't deal with it. that's the source of his turmoil.

as a result, in a scenario where jiang yanli and jiang cheng figure it out before wei wuxian even dies... neither of them has a reason to consider it a bad thing. like at all. you could take the 'i can't believe wei wuxian would do this to himself!' route but jiang cheng... honestly doesn't seem to care much about wei wuxian's suffering, and while jiang yanli would be horrified she'd know to approach it with compassion instead of frustration. if anything, she'd be frustrated with herself for not noticing what he was up to.

imo most fic where jiang yanli blames wei wuxian for the core transfer reads like the author is using her as a mouthpiece to validate their own interpretation, or just assumes that because jiang yanli is Perfect and Sensible she must share the Perfect and Sensible opinion that jiang cheng is a victim of Getting Exactly What He Asked For... But Non-Consensually! because lbr there is no way jiang yanli would view self-sacrifice as a negative, given that the one thing she did with agency is. you know. sacrifice herself. for someone who she must've known would struggle with it, but who she loved too much to let die.

i wholly agree w you about the trend of characters displaying self-destructive behaviour being met with the least compassion possible. omg. this is so clear with wei wuxian too; he goes through insane levels of trauma, most of which has lasting mental or physical consequences, for the sake of justice or saving his loved ones, yet fans rankle at the thought of treating him with any empathy and instead punish him even further by having other characters hate him for daring to help them. how is that going to do anything but make him more miserable? why are we abandoning kindness?
