Soulmate au where the first thing your soulmate thinks when they see you is written on your skin.

Because Fleur first thought was that Regis sucks at controlling his magic and can he please not touch everything like a sticky-fingered toddler? While Regis' thoughts probably ran along the lines of "damn, I thought she would have left for sure".

Regis has always thought that his soulmate must be the least romantic person on the face of Eos. He had been unfortunate enough to not be blessed with a romantic or witty soulmark. Instead the words 'His magic is everywhere. Toddlers have better control of their aether than this'. It was a soulmark that brought up many questions. Who is this person that can feel Regis' magic? Who is this person that seemingly comes from a place where magic is common?

Regis had always assumed that his soulmate was someone from the line of Oracles. There is no other family capable of feeling the way Regis lets his magic subtly flare and examine the world around him when he first enters a space.

Logic dictates that his soulmate must be from the only other family on Eos capable of understanding the Lucis Caelum magic.

Regis is wrong.

He doesn't realize how wrong he is until Fleur has ripped through a horde of monsters with her chakrams and the flowers that had blossomed with each movement shattered like glass and took the daemons with them.

"You fucking morons." Fleur does not waste time ripping into them. "What were you planning on doing? Letting yourselves become dinner for the daemons?"

Regis moves to step forward. Clarus puts an arm in front of him and bars Regis' way.

Fleur laughs meanly.

"What? Am I threat now?"

"Depends on how you answer our questions," Weskham's voice is apologetic but firm.

Fleur's grin stretches into a cruel thing.

"And here I thought we were allies at least."

"Your contract is over."

"I never knew my loyalty to be bound by words on a page."

"Who are you loyal to then?"

Fleur tilts her head to the side and considers the group. In the night she glows like a small sun and Regis knows without needing to ask that she is keeping the rest of the daemons away.

"I have a better question," Regis interrupts, "What are you?"

Fleur's grin turns into something less sharp.

"I knew I liked you for a reason," she says, "That's the question you should be asking. What is she?" Her smile turns rueful. "I would love to answer you, but I'm unsure how to explain it."

"I owe you for keeping you waiting when we first met," Regis says, "I thought for sure you would have left but you didn't. We have time for your explanation."

Fleur stiffens. Her eyes flashing.

Still she nods.

"Let's head back to town then," she says, "I don't want to waste my energy on keeping this light up for much longer."
