Going Keto/My Eating Disorder & Weight-loss Story
So, I’m doing keto again. After 3 or 4 tried and failed attempts, my boyfriend and I decided after we got back from our holiday we were going to go keto again and really stick to it this time. I have to admit, I was scared at first because every time I’ve tried it, I’ve failed. I’ve lost no weight and been disheartened. But I’m determined to succeed this time, and I have my boyfriend to help and support me. I’m excited to see how much weight I can loose and how my body feels/changes over this time. I stepped on the scales for the first time in ages (I avoid this like the plague, you have no idea) and I weighed in at 96kg. This was really confronting for me and initially I felt a wave of sadness over me - but straight after I felt more determined than ever.
A bit of a back story for you - in 2015/6 I lost approx 35kg on my own. I started on at 110kg and at my lightest I was about 67kg. I felt AMAZING. My confidence was higher, I was ecstatic - everyone who used to call me fat was telling me how great I looked, and it was so satisfying hearing them say that. I loved the fact that I was making them regret how they bullied and picked on me in the past. I had just broken up with my boyfriend and was getting a lot of male attention, which made me feel great. I started off using Tony Ferguson shakes, and after the first 10kgs dropped off, I quit the shakes and just ate super low calorie. But at this time, I was also living out of home with some “friends” who encouraged me to start using drugs. Combined regular drug use with a very strict low calorie diet, the weight just fell off. 
After about 8 months, I had dropped to my lowest weight at 67kgs. But in that time, without me even realising, I have developed an eating disorder. I ate two meals a day and those meals were two steamed zucchinis with salt. Every day, I would eat 4 small zucchinis and nothing else. Sometimes I would even skip lunch. I loved my results so much I didn’t even notice. I began to use drugs as a way to curb my hunger, or to reward myself for not eating/loosing weight. If I felt hungry, I would smoke marijuana until I wasn’t hungry anymore. For most people, they get the “munchies” - but because I was smoking so much and so regularly, it no longer had that effect on me. I stopped getting my period. My hair was falling out and my skin was really bad. I think deep down I knew what I was doing was wrong, but I couldn’t stop. I started incorporating exercise into my regime and cut out eating lunch completely, only dinner. If my friends or family noticed, they didn’t say anything. My housemates were always high so they took no notice. I couldn’t go to bed at night until I’d done 100 squats and 100 sit ups. This number got higher and higher until I was doing 300 squats and 300 sit ups in sets of 50. 
In September of 2015, I started dating someone new. After a few months, he noticed that my eating habits were not right. He and I would smoke weed together and I confessed/realised that I was anorexic. But I was so thin now, and I was scared to get fat again. Slowly, over time, he helped me to eat more and after about 6-8 months I my eating habits became better and better. I saw a therapist and things were getting better - but I was putting on weight. I continued to exercise vigorously, until I injured myself. When I couldn’t exercise anymore, I was so scared that I was going to get even fatter and fatter. 
After about 12 months of dating, I decided that it was time for me to quit smoking weed, it had been a huge part of my life for years and I hated it. I felt gross, I felt dirty, I felt scummy. I smashed our bong and we decided we would quit together. It was one of the hardest things ever, and was I was withdrawing, I turned to food to get me through. I put on 10kgs in the blink of an eye. I was really depressed and this cycle just continued. By the end of 2017, I had put on 20kg and was weighing 83kg. I was so depressed that I had come so far and then put it all back on. I tried starving myself again, I tried to will myself to not eat - but without the drugs to distract me, it was too hard. Its really sad to me that I wanted to be anorexic again, but thats all part of the illness I guess. 
Flash forward to March 2018 and after 3 and half years of dating, my boyfriend at the time became my ex. It has been - to date - the hardest, most heartbreaking and painful experience of my life. I thought we were going to get married. I’d never felt so alone. A month after the break up I reached out to him and wanted to get back together - but he didn’t feel the same way. That made things even harder. I was drinking a lot to get through. And as we all know, alcohol = weight gain. I was so ashamed of myself, and I was getting closer and closer to the weight I was when this whole story started. 
Fastword to right now. I weigh 96kg and hate it. I hate my reflection, and I hate the person I see looking at me. My current boyfriend and I (we started dating about 4 months after my last relationship ended) are going strong, despite my self esteem issues. He is crazy smart (he’s a lawyer!) and has been up and down with his weight like me. He knows everything about everything - including keto and the ketogenic diet. We did a few times but it never really lasted. We went on a holiday recently and decided when we came back, we were going to keto and we were going to do it properly. Its day 5 and I am feeling... okay. 
This is the strictest I’ve been while trying a ketogenic diet. My carbs are super low and my fat is super high. Its really weird for me to be eating a high fat diet - I have a huge fat phobia and my brain is screaming at me for consuming so much fat and so many calories. It feels wrong and weird, but I am sticking at it because I’ve seen how this diet works. Its easy in some ways because I can still enjoy bacon and eggs and other fatty foods, but its hard in others because I’m craving sugar and kero-friendly snacks are hard to come by. Even some fruit and veg are out. Thankfully vodka is in - there no carbs in liquor! Today I felt my energy levels lift and I've been needing to pee a lot more than normal - which are signals of your body moving from using carbohydrates/glycogen for fuel to using fat for fuel. So, my body is burning fat for energy which is exciting to me. I feel excited and hopeful for what will the next number of days, weeks and months will have in store for me and how my body shape and the number on the scales changes.

How to Pickle Beetroot | Gran’s Trusted Recipe – Kitchen Mason
Ever wondered how to pickle beetroot at home? It’s super simple and it tastes a million times better than shop bought! This is my Gran’s trusted recipe that’s been perfected over many years of trial and error. Trust me, just like with my homemade sweet chilli jam, you won’t want another sandwich without it! Read on for the full recipe and tips, plus how to sterilise jars.
Funny story – When I was little I was the fussiest eater EVER. I basically only ate 3 things. Chocolate (obviously), coleslaw and beetroot. I didn’t even like pizza. I know, what a weirdo right?! So I’ve had a very close relationship with beetroot from a really young age.

My Gran grows lots of delicious fruits and vegetables in her garden, one of them is beetroot. It’s pretty much the only vegetable I make a point of knowing when it’s in season – just so I can get my hands on a jar of the good stuff!
Especially knowing I can make a tasty delicious batch of my apple and beetroot salad with it!!!
I’m not joking, my Gran’s pickled beetroot is like currency in my family! It generates jealousy of the highest kind when you know someone else has a jar and you don’t. It really is that good! Come to think of it, so does her epic ham and cheese quiche. She’s basically a legend!
There’s something about it that’s so special, shop bought genuinely doesn’t even compare! (This applied to these pickled onions too!) It’s so soft and delicate with a punchy yet sweet flavour. I haven’t bought a jar since tasting it and that was a long time ago.
Because my Gran is unbelievably awesome, I asked her what her secret recipe was… and she told me! This made me CRAZY happy as I now have not one, but two jars of the best pickled beetroot in my house and I get to share the recipe with you!
Which vinegar is best for pickling?
According to Gran, it has to be malt vinegar. Over the years she’s tried various vinegars and this is the one she always comes back to.
How long before pickled beetroot is ready to eat?
Most people say to leave your pickled beetroot sealed in a jar for at least 2 weeks before opening and eating. Personally, I’ve opened a jar within a few days and it’s still tasted absolutely delicious!
I see no reason why there should be a time limit – if you want to eat it, open it and enjoy!
What you need to know
In this section of the post, I’m going to share relevant and helpful information that both myself and my Gran have learned over the years of pickling beetroot.

What ingredients do you need to pickle beetroot?
There are just 3 ingredients required to make pickled beetroot. That’s all!
Whole Beetroot – Try to use beetroot that is all similar in size and that are not really small or really large, but somewhere in between.
Vinegar – My Gran swears by using malt (brown) vinegar as opposed to white. I trust her completely as it always works out so delicious!
Sugar – Soft light brown sugar gives a slightly more caramelised flavour here but if you don’t have that, most sugars will get the job done fine.
How easy is it to pickle beetroot? (Simplified)
It really is very simple to make your own pickled beetroot. All you really need is time, there’s actually very little hands on with this!
Wash the beetroot and trim the stems
Place in a pan of cold water and bring to the boil
Simmer with a lid on for 1 hour
Dissolve a little sugar into vinegar over a low heat
Peel the skins off the beetroot and slice thinly
Place the beetroot into sterilised jars and cover with hot vinegar
Seal and allow to cool completely

Tips on How to Pickle Beetroot
As with any recipe, no matter how simple, we are all human and we all make mistakes! Here’s a few helpful pointers so you can nail it first time.
Use a toothbrush to wash your beetroot before cooking. It’s gentle enough that it won’t break the skin but does a perfect job of removing all the dirt!
Make sure your beetroot is nice and soft before you slice it. This is what sets this pickled beetroot apart from the shop bought versions.
Try and peel the skins while the beetroot is still hot. If the beetroot and vinegar are hot, they will seal better in the jar.
Don’t forget to remove any rubber seals before sterilising your jars! (I’ve done this before and trust me, it’s messy and STINKS!)
Fill the jar as close to the top as you can. This helps the beetroot keep better over time.
How to Pickle Beetroot – Step by Step Picture Recipe

Ingredients
Here is what you will need to fill approx 1 x 500ml Jar. (There may be enough for a 250ml jar too, depending on the size of your beetroot.)
550g (19.4 oz) of Raw Whole Beetroot
270ml (1 + 1/8 Cup) Malt Vinegar
3 – 4 tbsp Soft Light Brown Sugar
Essential equipment
Large Lidded Saucepan
500ml Preserve Jar
Small Saucepan
Sharp Knife
Instructions
First, trim the beetroot stems (550g | 19.4 oz raw whole beetroot) to about 1″ and give them a good wash. I like to use a toothbrush as it’s perfect for getting into all those nooks and crannies!
Now place them into a large saucepan (that you have a lid for).
Then cover them with cold water to about an inch above the tops, and place over a high heat.
Bring it to the boil…
Then reduce the heat to a simmer and pop a lid on. Leave to simmer for 1 hour so the beetroot gets nice and soft.
How to sterilise your jars
Preheat your oven to 190°C/Fan 180°C/374°F and wash your jar(s) in hot soapy water. When there is about 15-20 minutes left on your beetroot timer, place your preserve jar(s) onto a baking tray with the lids off/open. Don’t forget to remove any rubber seals!
Place them into the centre of the preheated oven for 20 minutes. This is all you need to do to sterilise your jars.
Just make sure you don’t touch the inside of the jars with anything other than the beetroot/vinegar, or it will no longer be sterile.
How to make the pickling vinegar
Meanwhile, with about 5-10 minutes to go, pour the vinegar (560ml | 2 + 1/8 Cup) into a small saucepan and set over a low/medium heat. 
1 tbsp at a time, add around 3-4 tbsp of sugar and stir through until it’s dissolved. If you can brave it, have a taste to check the sweetness is to your liking. Although, brace yourself – this is gonna tickle your throat a bit! (Well, it is pure vinegar!)
Keep this hot (but not boiling) until you’re ready to bottle your beetroot.
How to prepare your cooked beetroot
When the hour is up, drain the beetroot.
Then, as soon as you can handle them, remove the beetroot from the pan and peel the skins off. They should slip off very easily.

Now thinly slice the beetroot using a sharp knife.
How to bottle your pickled beetroot
While everything is still hot (the beetroot, vinegar and jars), fill your jar(s) as full as you can with sliced beetroot.
Then pour over the hot vinegar and fill it as close to the top as you can.
All that’s left to do is seal the lid and allow it to cool. 
Everything needs to be hot when you do this because they expand when hot. Then, when things cool, they shrink. This is how the jars seal.
That’s all there is to it! Unopened, your beetroot will last in a cool cupboard for up to 1 year. Once opened, it will keep well in the fridge for up to 3 months.
Let’s be honest though, it’s addictive and is never gonna last that long anyway!

550g (19.4 oz) of Raw Whole Beetroot
270ml (1 + 1/8 Cup) Malt Vinegar
3 – 4 tbsp Soft Light Brown Sugar

Large Lidded Saucepan
500ml Preserve Jar
Small Saucepan
Sharp Knife
Instructions
Trim the beetroot stems to 1″ and wash them well.
Place in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil.
Reduce to a simmer and put a lid on. Simmer for 1 hour.
Meanwhile, sterilise your jar (see below).
Pour the vinegar in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Add the sugar to taste and keep hot (but not boiling) until your beetroot is ready.
When the beetroot is cooked, drain the water and peel the skins off.
Thinly slice it with a sharp knife then fill your hot jar to the top with beetroot.
Pour over the hot vinegar (as close to the top as you can) and seal.
How to Sterilise a Jar
Preheat your oven to 190°C/Fan 180°C/374°F and make sure your jar is clean. (Washed in hot soapy water.) Place your jar on a baking tray, with seals removed, and bake for 20 minutes.
Seal while your jar is still hot for best results.

How To Recognize The Best Olive Oil
Just because we mentioned earlier that Extra Virgin oil is the best for treating psoriasis, it doesn’t mean that you should trust any brand that claims to sell it. Here are some tips for identifying the best extra virgin olive oil:
Expiry Date
Most of the healing components of the olive oil are found in polyphenols. However, it has been noted that the benefits of polyphenol reduce with time. Hence, it is highly recommended that you purchase olive oil that is not older than a year. If the product does not have a harvest date, then check for an expiry date that is at least a year away.
Color
The color of olive oil is not an indicator of quality. Olive oil can be in a golden, light green or medium green color.
Packaging
The olive oil should be packed in an opaque bottle to prevent oxidative damage.
Taste And Aroma
Fresh olive oil has a peppery, bitter taste. If your olive oil smells rancid like vinegar, wine, wax or a sweaty sock, discard it. Also, if it tastes musty or moldy, do not use it.
Where Can You Buy Olive Oil For Psoriasis?
You can buy a bottle of extra virgin olive oil online or from a store near you.
How To Store It
You should always keep your olive oil in a cool and dark place away from direct sunlight, heat and atmospheric air. Make sure its lid is tightly closed. Once you break the seal, make sure to use its content within two months and not linger.
Precautions And Tips
Perform a patch test to know if you are allergic to olive oil before applying it to a larger area
Do not use olive oil on infants as it may lead to eczema
Wipe your skin after using any of the mentioned procedures to prevent clogging
Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and flush out toxins
Do not heat extra virgin olive oil with more than mild heat
Avoid scratching psoriasis- affected areas
Replace your cooking oil with olive oil to strengthen your immunity
Avoid spicy, sugary and oily foods as they can worsen your condition
Olive Oil For Scalp Psoriasis
While olive oil can also be used as a topical treatment for scalp psoriasis, I would recommend using coconut oil as it absorbs better, has a better scent and better healing properties (based on my personal experience). If you do end up using olive oil on your head to treat the itchy flakes, then rest assured that it will stay moisturized and keep the dry skin at bay for approx 6 hours.

Gluten-Free Diets Linked To Increased Risk Of Diabetes

These days the bread basket is practically obsolete.
Millions of people around the world are working to avoid gluten – even though only around 1 per cent of the population actually has celiac disease, the main medical reason for adopting the diet.
In 2015, a YouGov poll revealed that 60 per cent of adults have bought a gluten-free product and one household in 10 – 2.7 million – contains someone who believes gluten is bad for them.
And why shouldn’t they? We’re taught by celebrities and fitness advocates that going gluten-free can help us lose weight, boost energy levels and end stomach bloating – it’s the holy grail of healthy eating, or so they say.

Between 2009 and 2014, the proportion of Americans eating gluten-free products despite not having celiac disease more than tripled, according to a 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine.
It’s no surprise then that the gluten-free industry is estimated to be worth $4 billion globally (and growing).
But while people with celiac disease and genuine intolerances have to avoid gluten for medical reasons, adopting the diet as a lifestyle choice may be doing more harm than good – researchers from Harvard University have found a link between going gluten-free and type 2 diabetes.

The major study, which observed the gluten intake of 200,000 people over 30 years, found that the 20 per cent of participants who consumed the most gluten had a 13 per cent lower chance of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who ate the least.
This means that consuming gluten could lower the risk of developing diabetes, lead author Geng Zong from Harvard University’s Department of Nutrition said.
Zong warned against avoiding gluten-free versions of products like bread and pasta: “Gluten-free foods often have less dietary fibre and other micronutrients [such as vitamins and minerals], making them less nutritious and they also tend to cost more.”
And people who deliberately cut gluten from their diets could be unknowingly increasing their risk of diabetes by avoiding it.

While gluten itself – a protein found in wheat, rye and barley – doesn’t offer special nutritional benefits, many whole grains that contain gluten do.
They’re rich in vitamins and minerals, like iron and B vitamins, as well as fibre. And studies – like the one by Harvard University – show that, as part of a healthy diet, may help lower risk of some forms of cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
And including them in our diet is essential.
Cassie Day, a Toronto-based personal trainer and wellness coach, told UNILAD:
We need healthy carbohydrates. Whole grains are health promoting, linked to reduced risk of coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and other chronic diseases.
The trendy diet fad right now is to be ‘gluten free’, so the first question I ask my clients is if a doctor has diagnosed a gluten allergy, and 9/10 times they haven’t. They have chosen to remove it from their diet for weight loss reasons or because they were told gluten causes bloating. There are a couple of issues I have with this.
I love stealing restaurants versions of "healthy meals" and making them actually healthy . Lately I've been addicted to pistachio crusted salmon . (Stolen from @thekegsteakhouse) . . For everyone asking here is recipe I've been snapping all month… INGREDIENTS * 4 salmon fillets (approx. 6 oz. each ,skin on) I buy mine at The Healthy Butcher. *Celtic sea salt and pepper to taste * 1 Lemon, juiced * 2 Tbsp course grain mustard (or Dijon) * 1 Tbsp unpasteurized honey * 1/3 Cup raw pistachio nuts, shelled * 4 Tbsp home made rye bread crumbs (shredded on my cheese grater) * 1 Tbsp coconut oil . . 1. Preheat oven to 375F 2. Rinse salmon and pat dry with paper towel. Arrange salmon on baking sheet, skin side down. Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste. 3. In a small bowl, combine lemon juice, mustard and honey. Spoon mixture and spread evenly over top of each salmon fillet. 4. Coarsely chop pistachios in a food processor (or in a sandwich bag and jump on them like me ) and combine with breadcrumbs and oil. Spread pistachio mixture on top of salmon, pressing lightly to adhere. 5. Bake until salmon is cooked through to your liking and pistachios are golden, approx. 15-20 min.

Cassie says if you find you are bloating, it is likely that gluten is not the culprit. Instead, it’s ‘other food choices you are making or stress that cause the inflammation in your body’.
“Just because you remove gluten from the bread, cookies, and pasta, it does not make them ‘healthier’ choices to eat,” she said.
While popular opinion states that removing gluten from a recipe makes the product a healthier choice, Cassie says, in most cases, more sugar is added in replacement of the gluten for taste.
And Jo Traverse, registered dietitian and author of The Low-Fad Diet, agrees.
Speaking to UNILAD, Jo, who does not recommend buying gluten-free products unless medically necessary, said: “It’s important to realise that when you remove the gluten from a product, you need to put in a whole lot of other ingredients to get the flavour and texture like the original product. This doesn’t necessarily make them healthier.”
Instead, it can often do the opposite.

Unfortunately, not all the foods being marketed as ‘gluten-free’ are healthy. Some are high in calories but contain very little nutrition, while others are high in saturated fat and cholesterol.
Instead, Severine Menem, Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach, says avoid reaching for gluten-free products and instead replace them with fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils and pulses.
Speaking with UNILAD, she said:
If you switch gluten-containing products with gluten-free products, then there is absolutely no doubt [that] your health is going to suffer as gluten-free (processed) products are well known for not being as nutritious as the products they’re trying to replace.
If people go on a non-strict gluten-free diet while increasing their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, they are likely to benefit from the switch.
While Severine believes most people would benefit from reducing their consumption of gluten, she says there is no point going gluten free if you don’t have a medical reason to do so.

The bottom line? If you think you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it’s best to see a doctor before giving up whole grains.
And if you’re determined to go gluten-free just because, it’s important to know that it can set you up for some nutritional deficiencies.

How many calories required to lose weight is the most non-important question for weight loss.
You must be believing the calorie calculator all this while and what I am going to state here might not seem believable but, are these numbers reliable and should you base your diet depending on them?
Well, the truth is counting calories is getting you nowhere close to healthy weight loss. In the calorie view, apple has more calories than cola.
But that doesn’t make cola any healthier, right? Calories simply equate every food without considering the vitamins and minerals. Watch the video given below that will point you out the bizarreness of calorie counting!

So, how many calories required to lose weight?
50, 100, 1000???
Calories model say you can lose weight by burning more calories than what you are consuming.
If you are consuming 1500 calories and you are burning 2000 calories, you will lose 500 calories every day. And 1 kg is equivalent to 7500 calories, so in 15 days, you will lose 1 kg.
I am 72 kgs, which is 5.4 lakh calories. If I exercise daily and eat a little less and create a calorie deficit diet of 500 calories every day, then I will need just 3 years to reach 0 kg of body weight!!!!
Even if I go for a modest 250 calories deficit diet every day, I will vanish in 6 years. Does a weight loss till 0kg make any sense? At least not to me. That is, there must be something fishy in the calorie model. (1)
Calorie counter and diet tracker doesn’t because
1. The number of calories doesn’t decide the health quotient.
If you think calories in food can help you determine how to lose weight then you, my friend, are wrong! An apple has more calories than 200 ml of cola. So, if we are to go by calorie model, cola is better than apple. Doesn’t it sound funny?

  2. Zero calorie products aren’t always healthy.
According to the calorie model, diet cola is the best product in the world, as it has 0 calories, and so are artificial sweeteners. But both are extremely harmful.
It can only cause deadly diseases (including cancer) and it is not great for weight loss either. Research shows, if you want to lose weight, regular cola is better than diet cola.

  3. Zero calorie products have additives too.
Salt and MSG have 0 calories. And so do preservatives, harmful additives. So, calories tracking model allows you to have all these harmful things in unlimited quantity. Ridiculous!
4. Calorie model does not give importance to time.
According to the model, Paratha, whether eaten during the day or at night, will produce same calories. But talk to a nutrition expert and you would know that the timing plays a big role.
And as you are active throughout the day, you can afford to have a heavy breakfast, but your dinner should be light. So calculating calories is not always right!
5. Calorie counter concept does not give any importance to minerals, vitamins, calcium and other nutrients in the food.
Are they not important? Is food just about calories and weight loss? Try ignoring these minerals, nutrients for a month and focus just on calories, you will see what harm it can cause to your body.
6. Calorie counter does not differentiate foods. 
It doesn’t bring out differences between healthy and unhealthy fat; healthy and unhealthy carbs; or between dal and rice. It does not differentiate between organic and inorganic food or normal and GM food. Eat whatever you want, it does not care.

7. Calorie counter method makes you start looking at foods as enemies.
Even healthy foods have calories and calories are not good. But food is not your enemy. Food is nature’s greatest gift to mankind (or any other living organism).
Without food, we cannot survive. Food gives us energy, minerals, vitamins and the fuel to survive. It is sad that we have started seeing food as our enemy, just calories.
8. The calorie counter is a very simplistic approach that is not true.
The best thing about the calorie counter concept is that it is the most simple model. Anybody can understand the “Calories In, Calories Out” (2) model.
You can judge any food by just reading the calories on the packet i.e. fewer calories is always better than more calories.
But unfortunately, its simplicity is also its greatest weakness.
The author of “The Gnolls Credo”, J. Stanton is popular for his interesting and detailed blog series ridiculing the calories-in-calories-out model(3).
He writes, “The problem with explaining complicated systems to the layman is this: it’s easy to simplify a concept to the point that it’s no longer true.
The concept of calories, as applied to nutrition, is an oversimplification so extreme as to be untrue in practice.”
Weight loss is not something based solely on calculation!
9. Our body is not a weight loss lab!
According to Newton’s First Law of Thermodynamics, “in an isolated system energy can neither be created nor destroyed”. (4) So, in a controlled lab set up, whether you burn 1000 calories from broccoli or 1000 calories from chocolate, it will release the same amount of energy.
But Newton’s law does not apply when food is processed in a living body. In a living body, there are so many factors which determine how food is processed e.g., hormones, enzymes, probiotics, etc.
People who vouch for weight loss using the calorie counter based on science and physics should also remember the second law of thermodynamics.
Nutrition and Metabolism Society founder, Richard Feinman says that “calorie is a calorie” model violates the second law of thermodynamics.
He says, “The second law is a dissipation law [which] says that variation of efficiency for different metabolic pathways is to be expected. Thus, ironically the dictum that a “calorie is a calorie” violates the second law of thermodynamics”
The science behind weight loss!
10. Our body reacts differently to different foods!
Show a kid 100 calories of apple and 100 calories of ice-cream and ask him which of the food calories will make him fatter and whether both will have the same effect on the body.
Even a kid with common sense will answer this question rightly, but unfortunately, a lot of experts are propagating the wrong information for weight management.
The calorie counter assumes whether you consume 100 calories of sugar or 100 calories of fibre, it will have the same effect on your body! It is the most absurd thing I have ever heard.
Most of the calories in fibre do not even get absorbed by your body. It just acts as a sponge and passes out of your body along with the stool.
If the body does not break down fibre and absorb it, is that calorie bad for your body and weight reduction?
Explanation behind the number of calories a day to lose weight
Sam Feltham, a weight loss expert and CEO of the very successful “Smash The Fat” franchise, made news when he conducted a random experiment to test the validity of the calorie model.
For 21 days he ate 5,794 calories a day of a high-fat, low-carb diet of natural foods! Mind it, high-fat; every day he ate almost half a kg of fat.
By the conventional theory of calories in calories out model,  he should have gained 7.5 kgs in 21 days. But he gained marginally 1.3 kgs.
And he actually lost inches from his waist (approx. 3 cms from waist). He was successful in proving that a calorie is not a calorie. And as per his hypothesis, eating low-carb is key to not gaining weight. (5)
Dr. Ludwig and his colleagues, in 2004, published a study in The Lancet, a medical journal, where it is suggested that a poor-quality diet, in spite of having low calories, could make you obese.
The study was on rats, some of them were fed with rapidly digesting (high “glycemic index”) carbohydrate and the rest of the rats ate more calories in the form of slowly digesting carbohydrate.
But the rats who were fed with rapidly digesting carbohydrate gained 71 percent more fat than their counterparts. (6)
Do you know what are basal calories?
Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is an estimate of how many calories your body burns at rest. It indicates the minimum amount of energy needed to keep your body functioning, including breathing and heartbeat. BMR uses up about two-thirds of your daily calories.
  What is superior, chocolate or an apple? Calories do not matter always!
