A:TLA romantic ships part 1
yes, no one asked for my opinions, yes I will give them anyway, yes because I have decided making a bunch of meaningless decisions and arguing for them will improve my mental state, yes I watched the show all in one very sleep deprived go and i’m not interested in rewatching it so yes I have absolutely no sources, yes this is a really long grammatical nightmare because I don’ t know how to be succinct and i use way more words than necessary at any opportunity because if my point doesn’ t come across exactly like i intend it will greatly upset me, no I have not yet watched Korra or read the comics because i’m tired now let’s do this.
includes Kataang, Zutara, Jetkara, Jinko, Maiko, Sukka, Taang, Tokka, Toko Ty Lokka, Tyzula, Yukka bc these were on the Avatar wiki ship list, part two will go into gay ships more
from 0 I despise people who ship this immediately to 10 I will read absolutely anything with this, I love it and could draw it for hours on how much I think the relationship would be good and how happy it makes me
Kataang (looks like a comic book sound effect so plus points)
very clearly built up over the series
cute kid crushes also ngl did not know katara was 14 and not older 12 or 13 so didn’t care about age when watching
now I know she’s 14 and he’s 12 it’s a little weird but still
haters say katara was just the avatar’s trophy girl, as if aang didnt kiss the ground she walked on and wouldnt stop telling anyone how amazing she is. Katara was the first face he saw from the new world and they immediately became friends. she was so excited to meet another bender, he clearly is trying to impress her and it is working, he listens to her about bending and offers to take her to the other side of the world to master water, TELL ME at this moment she is not ride or die and she doesn’t even know he’s the avatar, he lets her feel like a kid again, which is a feeling she’s forgotten after years of being a mother to sokka and the children. he literally sweeps her off her feet to save her from the fire nations ship i-. rewatched boy in the iceberg and hoo boy had canon not messed it up, this ship could have been legendary
hard to imagine older them working out what with the whole last airbender, preserve air nomad culture, let’s travel the world bc nomadic lifestyle, what’s marriage i’m a monk without biological family values vs last southern waterbender, preserve southern water tribe culture, I believe in the power of family and am ridiculously dedicated to my tribe,  let me go home to my father and tribe shtick, but I don’t care for after the show finishes much except for following the gang fix the world so I don’t really care about the marriage issue
canon was good until that Mess in season 3, WHY did he kiss her after that speech, wish they talked that out properly, wish he learned letting go of her to open the 7th chakra was the only right decision, wish the ending was a little more vague in ships and just left things open but yk whatever
that finale kiss was sweet, they hugged foremost as friends, no blushing, and then got the fuzzies, that moment standing alone? a+ but without any talking about what happened on ember island, a little unsatisfying
overall, fine ship, not my favourite nor do I actively ship it, but I see a kataang moment, i’m like, sweet so I give it a 6
Zutara (apparently fans are zutarians which looks like an alien race, plus points)
latter half of the show had quite a lot of Zutara potential, but idk about Zutara actual
katara was so ready to drop his ass, no way at the start
there is only one dynamic between them in which I can see Zutara working and that is as in the Stalking Zuko by emletish series where katara is so distrusting over zuko she takes to stalking him to make sure he isn’t doing anything to hurt Aang or about to betray them (her) again but he is just such a sweet dork who keeps trying to apologise to her even while she’s apologising to him for being a bitch that she can’t help but start to trust him, i’m a third into the third book in the series not stalking firelord zuko and I am thriving and tbh this is the only situation where I accept zutara, read the series I love it
age gap is weird, I know it’s the same difference between kataang but they made a point of zuko being older in the show also he’s so much taller and I don’t like 16 year old boys with 14 year old girlfriends in real life and so would katara because jet
katara has a bad experience with bad boy sword weilders (jet) but I guess you could see it as the start of her type idk
they are both the moms of the Gaang. sokka is the fun dad.
there is a parallel between their families, with the leader of their people dad, mom who left the picture when they were young, an older brother who is not a prodigy at/can’ t bend their respective element so they become proficient at swords instead, prodigy at bending younger sister with a violent streak. this is why I see zutara as potentially a really close friendship, almost siblings, but not a romance because to me katara is a little too like azula for comfort...
tbh I think a lot of folk shipped it because ooh fire boy and water girl (not the game) that’ s perfect, and bam army of zutarians
overall, kind of weird but ok and good grounds for humour so I give it a 4
Jetkara (bad ship name, why would you like this, minus points)
Jet is bad. yes Katara really liked him, yes he was definitely her first kiss and she would definitely consider him her first boyfriend but they would not define it because it’s easier to manipulate someone when it’s unclear what your relationship is and Jet is bad, with his weird fricking eyebrows and not even real swords those hook swords
Not wasting my time, 2
Jinko (cool name, reminds me of Hong Jinkyung, plus points)
short but so sweet. not the first thing people remember from watching the tales of ba sing se (brb going to rewatch and cry) but really cute, so here’s a running commentary
his first thought was she knew they were fire nation rather than a pretty girl sat in a teashop giving him looks because she had a crush omg
that honest surprise when his uncle suggested she liked her and then she walked up and asked him on a date, adorable
anyone who looked at that god-awful hairstyle and still thought he looked cute has it bad also aww that hair ruffle and the little grab onto his arm
he’s pushing his food around and she’s trying out ice breaker questions and recieving one word responses he has no idea what he’s doing
“she is not my GIRLFRIEND” he’s not over Mai, clearly but he still is trying his best to be a good date even if he’s terrible at making conversation
anyone who sat through that date and the bad lying and the stilted conversation and still thought he was cute has it bad
he is So Bad At Lying he just told the truth very vaguely and then bam travelling circus
jin so knows the two are fire nation, the whole date she just politely ignores the clear lies and doesn’t react to the obvious firebending, what an icon we love jin
honestly I was really expecting the show to reveal that jin knew he was a firebender if not from the start then from the lights but eh I guess she can keep a secret, good for her
HE KISSED HER BACK BEFORE REALISING A RELATIONSHIP COULD NEVER GO WELL AND HE MAY HAVE ANGSTILY STORMED OFF BUT HE ADMITTED IT WAS A NICE TIME TO HIS UNCLE
that being said I can’t see anything more happening but this date but omg imagine fire lord zuko coming back to visit and they become friends I-
overwhelming support for pre-date jin flirting to an oblivious zuko and the date Jinko, 8
Maiko (name would be a good name for a cat idk why)
childhood sweethearts before the banishment i think
she crushed because he saved her hair from getting burnt by tackling her into a fountain? adorable
I love mai she’s so funny but I think not the best match for zuko? he has a lot of trauma to get over and she doesn’t seem like the let all your feelings out and let’s talk about it until you feel better kind of person.  it was deeply ingrained in her to keep all of her feelings and emotions strongly hidden because she got what she wanted from her politician parents so long as she was quiet, well-mannered, and perfectly behaved according to avatar wiki so I get why she’s that way, until I was 11 I was that way too all the time, I understand freezing your face so you don’t look afraid or upset or angry and risk annoying adults, but I don’t think that that would fit zuko with his social ineptness
they literally broke up twice but are just assumed back together? she just surprised him and said they were back together and I think he forgot she existed
the deadpan firelady and the fire lord would be hilarious together tho she got the ruthlessness he lacks
post coronation I can see it happening, 6 but under Kataang
Sukka (terrible name lmao)
the cutest, sokka very excitedly says “Suki!! :DDD” every time he sees her
she didn’t give him the time of day until HE changed, incredible
just the best canon ship, the two nonbenders in the Gaang but very clearly shown to be important key members.
suki is sneaky and badass, rivalling zuko for position on the team as the sneaky badass one (they tie and bond over being sneaky and badass)
sokka is a great dad, he is the dad of the Gaang and he clearly loves suki and suki loves him back
sokka ships are ELITE, 9
Taang (a delicious orange drink mix that reminds me of home, nostalgia)
foreshadowing from the swamp where someone aang loved in the future really made me think taang was endgame yk
opposite elements ideology that I guess is what zutarians like also leaves everyone in the gang dating a Gaang member if zutara happens
actually the same age but not much else going for it
best friends, 4 but under Zutara
Tokka (great name of a small pet fight me)
sokka ships are elite, childhood crush turned adult strong friendship
I really like seeing the rough, tough, greatest earthbender in  the world have a crush, adorable
sokka is a great friend and his and toph’s canon relationship is so sweet, I wouldn’t change it
toph was fully going to give sokka a kiss on the cheek for saving her life i’m melting
age difference is too weird for a romance he’s like 16 or 17 by the end I think and she’s 12
best friends, 10 as a relationship in the show, 2, but in their 20s after the show... 4 but under Taang
Toko (very forgettable name but both characters have 4 letters so I guess it’s hard to come up with something memorable but every time I read it as Toph because same shape ish so minus points for being annoying)
even weirder age gap than Tokka
not many moments that could be considered romantic?
toph first accepted zuko despite him burning her feet, how she sees, which was big and they resolved problems between them quickly
toph clinging to his arm and asking for a life changing field trip caused him to blush, but I see that as him being like oh someone wants to spend time with me?? she’s hugging me??? what is this
convenient ship for kataangers because the Gaang could be paired off as Kataang, Sukka, Toko
her crush on sokka seemed to go away or calm down when he showed up and she punched him and teased him a lot, her way of bonding
similar strict teaching styles and bonding over secret identities as Blue Spirit and Blind Bandit and parental issues and being the children of important families who made them run away to enjoy not having anything to do with politics and being nobility with impaired vision who have never stepped into a kitchen in their lives and being used to servants and then being on the run
I really see them as siblings with her helping him relax from his duties as fire lord because you already know this boy’s sense of honour is going to make him work tirelessly to fix the world and him helping her relax from the whole i’m not a fragile, weak little blind girl, i’m the greatest earthbender in the world shtick and reminding her she can be both a blind 12 year old girl and the most powerful earthbender in the world, she can accept help without being weak or lesser than anyone, people want to help because they care not that they pity you
best friends 10, relationship in show 1, after show 3
Ty Lokka (I don’t like this name looks like a place but can think of nothing better)
yeah I guess ty lee’s obvious flirting is grounds for a ship but in every interaction he’s involved with someone else and doesn’t seem to like her as a person
do they even interact while on the same side?
friendly aquaintances at best, don’ t understand, 2 but above Jetkara
Tyzula (don’t like this name, like a mineral water?)
canon I don’t care it is canonically a possessive relationship
azula’s only genuine apology goes to ty lee after hurting her feelings
Azula clearly loves ty lee, her betrayal sends her mad
after a lot of therapy for azula and apologies, maybe a healthy relationship could form after the show, 8 above Jinko
Yukka (looks like a childish insult, surely someone could have thought of a better name)
Sokka’s love for Yue stays with him for the rest of his life, she was the first person to die in front of him and he sees the moon as her facing the earth
love this forbidden lovers content, sokka ships stay elite
Sokka and Yue spend as much time together as possible with secret midnight dates flirting (“you wanna do an...activity together?”)  Sokka’s reaction to Yue’s engagement shows that he wants to have a serious relationship with her, and also he thinks Hahn is a bad person for Yue, which he is.
Yue dying devastated him and he never falls out of love with Yue. her last words “[she] will always be with him” are true. swamp visions show Yue as one of the most important people in his life like a season or so after he last saw her. he wouldn’t kiss suki in front of the moon, and cries when Yue appears on stage, ignoring Suki. he talks about the moon as if it is directly Princess Yue in that cactus juice scene.
she died in his arms oh my god don’t look i crying, he feels personally responsible and guilty
yue was great even though she was the indigenous or black girl with light hair and eyes character and I wish she could have helped aang in the spirit world
despite her arranged engagement she clearly really likes sokka even though she knows nothing can happen, 9
Kataang, Zutara, Jetkara, Jinko, Maiko, Sukka, Taang, Tokka, Toko, Ty Lokka, Tyzula, Yukka

Embers - Male dragon shifter x reader, Chapter Five! (sfw)
So... this was supposed to go up on Friday but no one reminded me and I’m clearly not able to set a weekly reminder like an actual adult.
Hope you’re still enjoying this weekly series... Don’t forget to show me it some love if you are.
And I seem to have thrown my 'short chapters/800 words only' thing out of the window. This one is the longest so far, at 2455 words long. *rolls eyes at self*.
One, Two, Three, Four
Tumblr media
An entire week passed without word from Mikaeïl. You had almost given up on the whole commission for this departmental murder mystery dinner, when one lunchtime your phone buzzed and you answered with barely a glance away from what you were doing. With a searingly important deadline looming for work, your stress levels were possibly at their highest since university finals, and you had been staring at the computer screen for what felt like days without a break.
“Yeah?” you barked, still tweaking the design while holding the phone with your other hand.
“It’s Mikaeïl,” came a surprisingly shy, male voice at the other end. “Is now a bad time?”
Your heart skipped a beat or two and you grinned despite the lingering frustration that the design wasn’t looking anywhere near ‘there’ yet. “No, not at all,” you smiled, “I’m at work, but I’d much rather talk to you.”
That seemed to fluster him a little, but he cleared his throat and said, “Well… I spoke with the department and showed them your preliminary design. They loved it and are very happy to commission you to do the posters for the event.”
“Fantastic!” you grinned, genuinely thrilled to have a more exiting project to work on than this steaming pile of minotaur shit currently sitting on your computer.
“I thought we might discuss it in more detail when you bring Celia over on Friday...” he said, his softly-articulated words doing odd things to your insides and heartbeat. You could imagine him standing amongst his hoard of plants, one arm folded protectively across his slim chest as he stood, ramrod straight, surveying the gardens beyond.
A second after that image had flashed through your mind, you realised that it wasn’t your turn to being Celia to her flute lesson that week. When you said as much, he sighed and said, “Never mind.”
“I mean... Celia doesn’t have to be my only reason to come over and see you, does she?” you asked playfully, doodling with the stylus on a new layer of the design. As you listened to him speak, his eyes began to stare out at you from the screen as you drew them, all distant and guarded, but glittering and somehow soft all the same.
“No,” he said slowly, the slight smile audible in his rich voice. “No, of course not. I’m rather busy with work this week, and I’m presenting a paper at a conference on Thursday, but if you’re alright to meet up in town instead during the week we could do that?”
“Stickybeaks?” you suggested, thinking of the cafe where you’d first met him.
He clearly along the same lines because he gave that sonorous chuckle that made your stomach churn pleasurably. “Perfect. What day suits you? I’m free most days after five, except this Thursday.”
“Friday?” you suggested. “I think Stickybeaks stays open til seven. We could have an early supper? That way you can tell me all about the conference too, if you like.”
“I wouldn’t want to bore you,” he said reflexively.
“Oh, I think you’d have to work quite hard to bore me. I’m really quite a curious person...”
There was something melancholic about the tone of his clipped response. “If you say so,” was all he said. “Well, Friday works well for me. Shall I meet you there at half past five? That will give me enough time to walk over from the department.”
“Perfect. Looking forward to it.”
A beat too late, he said with a slight crack in his voice, “So am I.”
You rushed out of work that Friday and ended up getting to the cafe way too early, so you got out your A3 sketch pad and started to draw a number of variations on the same theme that you’d doodled back at Mikaeïl’s house. When he stepped through the doorway at precisely 5.29pm, Mikaeïl glanced around, the lenses of his round glasses glinting in the low light, and when he saw you, the hard line of his tense shoulders eased just a little.
Mikaeïl nodded politely at Lidaë, who was fluttering around behind the counter as usual despite the fact that there weren’t all that many customers in at that time, and then he strode over to your place in the back corner. The pathway through the sleek, modern tables gave you the opportunity to admire the slender form of his body and the effortless grace with which he moved, almost like a dancer. Today he wore a butterscotch coloured trench coat, belted tightly at his slim waist over black skinny jeans, and his autumn-red hair was tied back in a sleek ponytail again, with the shorter sections at the front falling down to mask the full intensity of his bright golden eyes.
“Hey,” you said, half standing.
“I hope you haven’t been here long,” he said by way of a greeting and staring at your drawings again with that odd expression again.
“No, not really,” you said, awkwardly sitting back down again. “I finished work a bit earlier than usual and came straight here. I roughed out a few more designs for the poster anyway.”
“You’ve been here long enough to have finished your drink,” he said pointedly. “Can I get you another?”
You eyed your empty cup and then glanced at your watch. “I just turned in a major project that’s been bugging me for weeks,” you grinned. “I think I earned a grown up drink…”
He cocked his head slightly and the corner of his pretty mouth twitched ever so slightly to show his amusement. “Congratulations. And I think I might join you in that.”
By the time he returned, you’d shunted the sketch book to one side and once he’d set your drink down, he took his coat off to hang it on the back of his chair. It was a real effort not to stare at the beauty of his figure. Perhaps it was the artist in you, but you really noticed the strong, straight lines of his waist and thighs, his body clearly tightly corded with extremely lean muscle, and the elegant movements of his fingers as he worked the buttons of his coat.
When he was finished, he sat and shyly drew his ponytail over one shoulder, twisting the end of it between his fingertips and blinked softly at you. “What?” he asked in a breathy murmur.
“I… Uh…” you blushed, and settled on a bashful, “Nothing. Have you come straight from teaching?”
He nodded.
“Oh boy,” you laughed. “Your students must love you.”
“I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not,” he said bluntly.
“I wasn’t,” you said, feeling a heat creeping up your neck. Did he seriously not have any idea how attractive he was? “Don’t take this the wrong way then,” you said, sipping your drink and letting the warmth of the alcohol ignite a little courage in you, “But if you were my professor, I’m not sure I’d get much learning done…”
“Then I’d be failing in my duties as a teacher…”
Damn but he was hard work.
“Never mind,” you said. “How did the conference go?”
“Very well, to my surprise,” he said, holding the stem of his wine glass as if it were a rare specimen rose. He inhaled the scent of the wine before drinking, and closed his eyes briefly as he savoured it. His throat worked and you watched his sharp Adam’s apple bob as he swallowed, and that newly-kindled heat in your cheeks flared a little hotter while blood rushed south away from your brain to somewhere a little less articulate.
“What was your paper on?” you managed to rasp.
He cleared his throat and swirled his wine absentmindedly around his glass. “It’s… hardly a dinner time conversation,” he said.
“What, because you study bodies and death?”
His golden gaze flicked up to meet yours. “Most people find it repulsive.”
“You’re searching for answers,” you said. “I’m sure you’re respectful about the way you treat the remains. What’s repulsive about that?”
Mikaeïl blinked, and then his hard, wary expression flickered to something a little gentler, bordering on relief. “Well, alright. I was presenting my preliminary findings on the use of MRI and CT scans to determine the presence of necromantic activity in long-dead remains…”
“That stuff shows up? Even centuries later?” you asked, instantly intrigued.
He made a side to side shake of his head. “That’s what I’m trying to find out. X-ray has been used in the past, but because any damage caused post-mortem usually presents exactly the same whether the person in question was truly alive or undead, it’s not always particularly accurate… I want to explore the use of other technology to explore the effects that necromantic magic in particular has on the body after the heart has ceased beating.”
“That’s awesome,” you breathed, and he smiled again. “Was it well received?” you asked tentatively.
“Yes, for the most part. Non-invasive examination is always preferable, so there was a deal of interest from others in the field. I even had a lich in the audience who was willing to undergo some testing, which was encouraging.”
“Did you study medicine at the university here?” you asked, and he nodded.
“Quite some while ago though,” he said. “I worked as a medical examiner for a long time.”
You frowned, and he read your next question in your eyes.
“I’m not as youthful as I look,” he said. “My kind is long lived. And before you ask, I’m just over two hundred and sixty.”
“Whoa…” Honestly, it wasn’t actually that much of a surprise, given how… ‘remote’ he seemed at times. A moment later you added with a wry smile, “You must have enjoyed watching the leaps and bounds that science has made then in the last hundred or so years! I’d love to witness something like that…”
“That’s…” he faltered into silence.
“What?”
Mikaeïl steepled his long, fingers and rested his lips against his index and middle fingertips, elbows resting on the table. “That’s… honestly not a reaction I’ve had before.”
“I don’t understand?”
With a dry chuckle, he said, “Most people - though the number is admittedly few - discover I’m old enough to be their ancestor, and they start to act strangely. Friendships have been hard to initiate, and even tougher to maintain, though I’m sure that’s partly due to my own…” he swallowed, apparently unsure of the word before settling on, “‘Quirks’.”
You shrugged. “It sucks, I’m sure, but anyone who doesn’t at least try to understand or get to know you is missing out, and probably isn’t worth the effort anyway, at least in my limited experience. Can I ask you another question though?”
As his lips hitched up on one side, he nodded. “Of course.” And with that, he seemed to relax a little more in your presence.
“Is it super rude of me to ask what you are? I had thought you were at least part tiefling, but that was literally just from the horns and the eyes.”
“A common misconception,” he said over the rim of his wineglass before he took another sip. “And one I usually let slide. But no, I am not any part tiefling. I am… my family is… that is to say…” He set his wine down, took off his glasses, and cleaned them with a little cloth that he drew from his top pocket while he said quietly, “We are dragon shifters. Wyvern, technically.”
You blinked in silence for a stunned moment. Dragon shifters were exceptionally rare these days, having been hunted ruthlessly for sport, mostly by orcs but also by humans, about five hundred years ago. They’d been massacred in droves almost to the point of extinction. “No way,” you finally breathed.
He acknowledged the truth with a brief pursing of his lips, and returned his glasses to his face. Tersely, he added, “Please don’t ask me to prove it here. I won’t fit into this corner of the cafe, and besides, shifting is a huge inconvenience to say the very least.”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” you said hastily. “I’m just… amazed? Surprised? Honoured?”
Mikaeïl deftly and promptly steered the conversation onto your drawings and drafts after that, and you allowed him to slide the limelight onto you. Clearly an intensely private individual, Mikaeïl had just honoured you with the truth about himself, and, curious as you were about what he might look like in his wyvern form, you respected his gift by focusing on the real reason you were there. This was not a date after all, no matter how much you wished it were.
Despite that fact, however, it was five minutes before closing time when Lidaë flitted over to you, her iridescent hummingbird’s plumage shimmering, and politely asked if you’d mind wrapping up so she could close up her cafe.
Mikaeïl startled from your conversation as if he’d suffered an electric shock. “I’m so sorry, Lidaë,” he said, standing abruptly and pushing his chair back with a decidedly ungraceful scrape on the wooden floorboards. “I had no idea it was so late.”
She patted his arm fondly and shook her head. “Never you mind, my lovely. I’m glad to see you having such a good evening.”
For the first time since you’d met him, his pale cheeks flushed and he glanced briefly at you before fumbling to pick up his coat. Once he’d slid it on, he fished out his wallet and insisted that he pay for everything.
Outside, with your bag packed and a design finalised, you looked up at him and he turned his deep, golden eyes on you. In the light from the street lamps overhead, his yellow eyes reflected the soft glow in a decidedly inhuman way, and you felt something stirring inside you again.
Feeling perhaps a little uncharacteristically bold, you reached for his shoulders, took them gently in your hands, and leaned in to kiss his smooth, cool cheek. As you withdrew, you saw that he’d gone rigid, his eyes wide with surprise. Allowing yourself a small giggle at his expense, you grinned at him.
“I’ll bring the finished design with me when I bring Celia over next Friday, if that’s ok.”
“Mmhmm,” he hummed softly.
“Looking forward to it,” you said. “And thank you again for supper.”
“My pleasure,” he croaked, bowing his head. “Sincerely.”
Tossing a final grin and a wave his way, you walked off down the street, leaving him standing there, and when you glanced back, you saw that he was walking away in the opposite direction, his fingertips just brushing his cheek where your lips had kissed his skin.
To be continued next Friday! (don’t let me forget!)

marketplace au (cont.): part 2  y’all I’m sorry this prompt is a MESS. I’ll post to ao3 when it’s all said and done. Still need to finish writing part 3, but for now, welcome Keith!!!!!
The first time Shiro brought him a cinnamon bagel from Lance’s bakery, Keith was lying on the floor of their new apartment surrounded by unpacked boxes and crumpled newspaper.
He continued to lay motionless as he heard Shiro’s footsteps approaching their unit from the outside hallway. He didn’t stir when he heard the click of the door unlocking, or when Shiro walked inside. It was only when Shiro nonchalantly tossed a warm package across the room, landing on top of his stomach and square above his bellybutton, that Keith turned his head to look at his brother.
“Breakfast.” Shiro shrugged, responding to Keith’s raised brow. “I also brought you some tea.” He watched as Shiro weaved through the maze of piled boxes the movers had carelessly placed, easily reaching the kitchen counter and setting down the steaming cup. Being a firefighter had its perks, one of them being the ability to move and coordinate a large, muscled body with inhuman grace. “You’re lucky that I remember to feed you, or else you’d starve.”
Keith huffed, sitting up slowly with a long, drawn out breath. He stretched his arms up high above his head, letting the paper bag roll down his stomach and fall into his lap as he straightened. He flinched as a strip of unexpected morning sunlight caught his eye, vision turning spotty. They’d both spent the entire night unpacking, but only Shiro had managed to keep track of the time. How Shiro was always able to remain awake and aware was beyond Keith, and he’d stopped trying to understand his brother’s innate and God-like ability to completely Have His Shit Together™ long ago. Which is why he didn’t question him any further as he reached for the package in his lap, heavy lidded and in a sleep deprived haze. He shivered as he took the paper bag in his hands, its absence leaving his lap feeling empty and cold. With clumsy fingers he unwrapped his breakfast, and without pausing to question what it might be, took his first bite. Immediately, his eyes fluttered wide. A warm flush of pleasure crept up his neck and warmed his cheeks as he began to chew.
“Oho,” Shiro cooed from across the room “Looks like Mr. Picky actually likes his breakfast.” Keith scoffed, crumpling up the bagel wrappings and launching them across the room. His aim was perfect, but so was his brother’s ability to dodge. Shiro side stepped the throw and caught the empty package with ease, shooting Keith a cocky grin that he returned with a scowl. Shiro answered with a light-hearted laugh, grabbing Keith’s tea and heading over to join him at his makeshift newspaper picnic.
The second time Shiro brought him a bagel, he set it down next to him without a word. The small action startled him, tearing him away from his work and bringing him sharply back to reality. It took Keith a moment to adjust, vision blurry from staring for too long at his laptop.
“You haven’t eaten yet today.” Shiro stated, matter of fact.
“I…what?” Half of Keith’s focus was still swimming in the colours and swirls on his computer screen, hands still poised to draw. He’d spent the entirety of the day working on overdue art commissions, completely sinking into his work and losing track of time. He leaned back in his chair, taking a moment to adjust to his surroundings. The sun, which had been high above the horizon when Keith had started work, was now setting, painting the room with vibrant pinks and reds. He slowly came back into his body, the hunger that was once distant now clawing at his stomach, desperate in its chance to finally be heard. Keith turned his attention to his desk, eyes travelling to where Shiro had set down a small, familiar brown package and peppermint tea. “Oh,” he stammered, the full reality of the situation finally hitting him “Thanks man.” They let the silence grow for a few moments, Keith taking the opportunity to unwrap his food.
“His name is Lance.” Shiro finally spoke, leaning against the side of Keith’s desk as he did. Keith paused, bagel in hand, mouth gaping around the ghost of what was going to be his first bite.
“What?” He spoke after a few moments, drawing out the silence. He must have looked completely bewildered, as his expression had Shiro laughing within seconds.
“The owner of the bakery.” He said, smile still etching his features. Keith blinked twice, utterly lost. Shiro held in his laugh this time, eyes travelling to the bagel and back to meet Keith’s. “Where I keep getting the bagels, Keith. Jesus.” Keith’s expression quickly turned skeptical, questioning. He let his eyes linger on his brother for as long as his hunger let him, but it was only a matter of moments before he shifted his gaze and took his first bite. He was immediately contented as the warm pastry settled on his tongue. He could feel Shiro’s eyes on him as he chewed. “First man I know who’s been able to win over your taste buds on the first go.”
“I’m not that bad!” Keith snapped, forgetting that his mouth was full, words cascading out sharp and messy. A blush quickly spread from his neck to the tips of his ears and he shot up a hand to cover his mouth. He refused to look at Shiro, who kept his eyes trained on him and watched in quiet amusement. Mouth still covered, he took a few moments to chew and swallow properly. Afterwards, blush still bright and patchy, he cleared his throat. “I mean… I’m not that picky.”
“Whatever you say.” Shiro straightened, deciding to let Keith eat and resume work in peace. “All I know is that I’m grateful to the man, he’s making my life a lot easier.”
This time, the crumpled bagel package caught Shiro on the side of the head as he turned to leave the room.
Every time Shiro brought him a bagel thereafter, it came with new information about Lance.
The third time, after Shiro had placed the bagel directly on top of Keith’s keyboard, he’d said: “Lance looks like he’s about your age.” When Keith responded with a gruff “What does that have to do with anything?” he’d simply shrugged, turning out of the room with a casual “Oh nothing, just an observation.”
The fourth time, he learned about Lance’s business. “He took the business over from his father, isn’t that interesting?” Shiro spoke from where he sat next to him on the couch. He’d just returned from picking Keith up his now go to meal, and was binging on some Chinese takeout himself.
“Mhm,” Keith hummed, mouth full and attention glued to the TV in front of them, buzzing with the evening’s news. He felt an elbow dig into his side, quick and abrupt, causing him to choke on a piece of bagel.
“Runs the whole place by himself. Seems like he’s doing pretty well.” Shiro continued a little too casually, prodding the contents of his takeout container with his chopsticks as though he hadn’t just elbowed Keith in the ribs.
“Shiro, why do you keep telling me all of this stuff about that baker? Last time I checked, you and Allura were in a long-distance relationship.” He drew out the last word for emphasis, knitting his eyebrows in frustration as he looked over at his brother.
“Yes, and a happy one at that.” Shiro continued to prod at his food, withholding eye contact. “Also, his name is Lance.”
“Alright. Why do you keep telling me all of this stuff about Lance, then?” He huffed in frustration, the conversation beginning to feel like pulling teeth. Shiro looked up at the mention of Lance’s name, a coy smile playing at his lips as he popped a piece of broccoli into his mouth. Keith stared, utterly lost.
“Just seems like an interesting guy is all.” He ate with a cheeriness Keith couldn’t place, like he was up to something. But for the life of him Keith couldn’t figure out what it was, and he had his upcoming commissions to focus on, so he let it go and continued to eat. If he had to listen about Lance in order to keep eating his bagels, he resigned, it was a small price to pay.
Keith leaned back in his chair, locking his fingers and stretching his arms far behind his head. He proceeded to rub his eyes, which were, again, overworked and tired from the strain of looking at a computer screen all day. He’d finally finished his work, and as usual, was having trouble adjusting to the reality that now surrounded him. The sun was almost below the horizon, the only light that remained in the sky burning like an ember about to go out. He didn’t know exactly how long he’d been working, but he did know that when he sat down to start, it was just after lunch. He put a palm to the back of his neck, stretching his muscles and cracking his tired bones. Now that his focus was shifted away from his work, his stomach had turned indignant, nagging and nagging to be obliged. He sighed, reaching into his pocket to grab his phone.
Keith: Where are you? 6:47p.m.
Shiro: Still at work, what’s up? 6:51p.m.
Keith: Can you bring your favourite brother a bagel on your way home? Haven’t eaten since lunch… 6:52p.m.
Shiro: Won’t be home for another hour or two, you’re on your own kid 7:00p.m.
Shiro: Also… you gotta start taking better care of yourself 7:00p.m.
Keith: I know I know 7:02p.m.
Keith: I don’t know where the place is tho… 7:03p.m.
Shiro: It’s in the indoor marketplace about a block away on 5th, fourth store to the right. Can’t miss it – but hurry, he closes at 8 7:05p.m.
Keith: I can’t believe you’re making me go outside 7:06:p.m.
Shiro: Tell Lance I said hi ;) 7:14p.m.
Keith had been in an art haze for days. He’d been able to take complete advantage of it, as Shiro was usually home early, but they were starting to trust him more at his new job, which incidentally meant more work and longer hours. He shuffled around his room in the dark, spying a bright red hoodie among the wreckage that was his bedroom floor. He sniffed it quickly, deemed it okay, and threw it on over his t-shirt. He tied his hair into a messy bun, swapped his pajama pants for a pair of dark jeans, and grabbed his leather jacket, keys, and wallet before heading out the door. He was a bit of a mess, the bun being a necessity to contain his second day hair, and his clothes wrinkled and disheveled after having spent God knows how long crumpled on his floor. His skin was pale from lack of sunlight and his eyes were heavy lidded and tired, but, he thought casually, swinging his keys on one finger and walking out onto the street, it’s not like he had anyone to impress around here anyway.

GreatDrams gets hands on with Diageo Special Releases 2017
Oh holy wow it is that time of year again where Diageo release the Diageo Special Releases 2017 and you hope to Christ that come mid-August you have had the invite land in your inbox, as it is never guaranteed and I treat each year as if it might be my last. You just never know, so why waste the brilliance?
For those who don't know, Diageo Special Releases 2017 is essentially one of the pinnacle events of the year for whisky writers, bloggers and trade partners where we get to try the best of the best of what Diageo are creating fr whisky collectors and drinkers globally. This is the sixteenth edition of their releases, but only the third I've been to - I've got the hat trick!
There is normally a healthy mix between dead and functioning distilleries and the Diageo Special Releases 2017 is no different, and adds a new idea to the mix; the Collectivum XXVIII - a blend of all twenty-eight active Diageo distilleries in Scotland. Interesting, tho probably not my favourite of the night, that will be revealed later.
The whiskies are always going to be great, as is the company, but, instead of going into each one in detail - as lots of blogs and retailers will do that - I would prefer to focus on my top five, as they were really bloody special.
BLAIR ATHOL 24 year old Distilled 1993 ABV 58.4% Region: Highlands Cask: Ex-Bodega European Oak ButtsMax. 5,514 available worldwide Bottle cost: £400
Oh wow this was special - it is so rare to get to try aged Blair Athol, even at the distillery itself, and this was pretty incredible. The nose was surprisingly herbaceous, lots of deep dark Christmas fruits for me, maybe some tobacco notes and almost a molasses note too.
That Christmas character carried through to the palate too, oh yes, like a dried fruit bonanza with all the fun parts of Christmas; Terry's Choclate Orange (not Terry's, it... is... mine!), vanilla fudge, raisins, the thick molasses note still and some sharper fruits too. Wham! A great spicy finish too. Lovely.
BRORA 34 year old Distilled: 1982 ABV 51.9% Region: Coastal Highlands Cask: Refill American Oak HogsheadsMax. 3,000 available worldwide Bottle cost: £1,450
Oh Brora, you old rogue. It is one of the most incredible reasons to attend this event, but just as last year's tasting showed, the Diageo Special Releases 2017 left me thinking this was one of the absolute standout drams of the night, nay the year.
Present at each of the Special Releases events to date, Brora is always a crowd pleaser, and man I loved it... managing to nab two samples of this guy as I chatted with fabulous people including Martin Eber of TimeForWhisky.com, Jason who is one of my biggest fans on YouTube, Chris M who has a ridiculously brilliant life and Kristy who is now the editor of all things Master of Malt.
As it has been ever present at these events, it is sometimes shocking - if not saddening - to remember that this distillery died in the early eighties... sureles there is only so many more casks left?! Or maybe they are all in Dr. Nick Mogan's back garden? Who knows.
For me this dram was all about tropical fruits, wisps of smoke - but not too much, and a hint of baby sick - not in a bad way, encapsulated in vanilla, mango, pineapple and kiwi loveliness.
Ah I wish I had had a third... so good. Those smokey notes were akin to the very last embers of a bonfire, long after the marshmellows have melted, the random banana thin in tin foil has been discarded, the las moments before the collective sing-song finishes. Incredible.
COLLECTIVUM XXVIII Distilled: NAS ABV: 57.3% Region: Speyside, Islay, Island, Lowland, HighlandCask: Blend of Refill American Oak Hogsheads,Refill European Oak Butts, Ex-Bodega EuropeanOak and First Fill Bourbon Casks Bottle cost: £150
None of us really saw this coming; a blend of all twenty-eight operating distilleries that Diageo own in Scotland. Should be obvious really, but it wasn't, and it is actually not a bad price for the privilege of trying something that probably took a lot of effort to balance and make work vs. other products.
I tried this late on in the evening, after the Port Ellen and the Brora, so my palate my have been a bit confused, but I was getting tonnes of honey, molasses, orchard fruits, quite a strong grain note actually which I did not expect but with some decent mouth fell and wafts of peated brilliance from Islay.
There was definitely a sweetness, a strong citrus note - more lime and orange than lemon, followed by more peat and maybe even a minty note - definitely did not expect that.
PORT DUNDAS 52 year old Distilled: 1964 ABV 44.6% Region: Lowlands Cask: Refill American Oak HogsheadsMax. 752 available worldwide Bottle cost: £775
One of my favourite people in whisky, and one of the nicest people in whisky, Ewan Gunn (bloody great name too, whilst we are here and giving him a load of kudos), was on the Port Dundas stand, one swamped at night he beginning, and the end of the night as single grain is a nice soft opener, but also a decent closure for any whisky evening. He had the honour, I think, of my final pour.
Stunning. Awesome. Unique. Glorious. Insert more superlatives here please. That's how great this whisky was - tonnes of vanilla, sweet butterscotch, butter, molten marzipan and nutty notes were present.
The colour told a truth not often given - this had to have been in more than an ex-bourbon cask, surely?!
The palate opened up more into Christmas fruits, dried raisins, a marvellous concoction of the exotic blended with the traditional orchard fruits, oh man this kept me enthralled for ages - do you see why I went back at the end? Beautiful, with a cheeky tang of spice to finish and close off something pretty damned special.
PORT ELLEN 37 year old Distilled: 1979 ABV 51% Region: Islay Cask: Refill American Oak Hogsheads & RefillAmerican Oak Butts Max. 2,988 available worldwide Bottle cost: £2,625
Oh Port Ellen you filthy beast that only draws me in, makes my lust after you and then throws me out to count the pound coins in the piggy bank hoping to meet your new annual benchmark in pricing strategy... you were lovely.
Since you ceased production in 1983 you have only drawn us all in further, wanting, hoping, needing you to under deliver, but yet you still smash your annual benchmark and make it an interesting comparison between others, but no, you nailed it again, as you always do.
A nose full of sweet, honeyed notes hiding the underlying peated notes that we know are about to appear with the addition of stone fruits and an evolving sweetness... then comes the beefy note of smoky brilliance I wanted; bacon, cinnamon, cayenne and some tropical pineapple notes I did not see coming. You were truly a rogue, but god damn you were a lovable one. #addstochristmaslist.
The rest of the line up included:
CAOL ILA 18 year old ABV 59.8% Region: Islay Cask: Refill American Oak HogsheadsLimited quantities available worldwide

Conversation
Kame Interview
Kame: I'm Charlie but most people call me Kame.
CS: Damn, that's sick honestly. Is it pronounced Kame as in like Kamehameha?
Kame: Yeah my dude!
CS: Is it something your family has called you since you were a child or what?
Kame: Nah, I use to draw it everywhere. Like if there was a piece of paper I would just write Kame on it haha. Then it just caught on from there.
CS: That's whats up man! So, how old are you and where are you from?
Kame: I am 20 years old from New Plymouth, New Zealand, aka Nug City.
CS: That's tight! What was it like growing up there?
Kame: It's cool and small. There's not a lot to do so I spend everyday skating and making music.
CS: What made you want to start making music?
Kame: When I was around 6 years old I started writing songs. I remember I was 9 years old when I learned basic chord progression on guitar and from there I was obsessed with music. I guess it gave me a sense of purpose.
CS: So you could say from a young age you knew you wanted to make music?
Kame: Yeah for sure. It's been my favourite thing to do ever since! I knew it would be my future since a young age.
CS: So was rapping something you got into later? Considering you were learning guitar at 9. Or were you into a bunch of different music as a kid?
Kame: My mum always listened to hip-hop and R&B like Biggie, Boyz II Men, and Aaliyah. But I got into heavy metal as kid. That's what got me into guitar, so I have a very eclectic taste in music.
CS: When did you start making music and putting it our for people to hear?
Kame: I was always in bands growing up. I would have been 14 when I released my first EP with my band, An Ember in Ashes, it was some metal-core shit I recorded on Garage Band. But I started releasing music as Kame in late 2014.
CS: I found about your music through Hxrman (@lilbbhxrman) because I started listening to him in late 2016 or early 2017 and then followed him on Twitter and saw him retweeting your music. How did you meet him?
Kame: I known Hxrman since I was a sprout! We both from the same hood, cut from the same cloth. That's big bro! He's the only father I really had.
CS: So when did NNB come together?
Kame: Around 2014, Hxrman (Oosh Nugs at the time) and GREENLVNTS (Rest In Peace) started NNB. They started making rap music together and our homie Taskone started making music videos for them. That's really what started NNB. I was just an honorary member because we all like brothers. NNB is more than a group of musicians, it's more like a brotherhood. We all grew up in shitty circumstances and we all grew up together, it's like a family. We all got crazy shit going on in our lives so we stay high to keep us going. We all spent years trying to let the government fix our problems with medication and we all found out together how to do it on our own and none of it would be possible without GREENLVNTS.
///We took a 2 day hiatus due to me having a bad migraine and time issues because of time zone differences.
CS: So we left off with you telling me how NNB came together so we'll start with a new topic. How would you describe the New Zealand underground rap scene?
Kame: It's fire! There's a lot of talented people in New Zealand making great music. Some people get caught up in the clout tho.
CS: Getting caught up in clout doesn't seem to uncommon in any scene. Do you ever get recognized by someone? Or stopped by an old classmate that listens to your music?
Kame: Nah dude, that's never actually happened to me before. But New Plymouth is pretty small so everybody knows everyone haha.
CS: Have you been on tour yet? Or has NNB as a whole gone a tour before?
Kame: I've never even done my own show, but I'm working on it. I've been at a few shows with Hxrman but never any tours. Keep your eyes peeled though because big things are on the horizon.
CS: No doubt man. If y'all came to the States then I'd definitely have to see y'all perform. So, changing the topic real quick, making your Underdog EP. What was that like and what is the feedback you've gained?
Kame: Making any project, for me, is always a start to finish thing. I wanted every song to complement each other. At the time I was listening to a lot of Blink182 so a lot of the melodies are inspired by that. And I haven't gained much feedback. The homies said it's dope, my mum bumps it lmao.
CS: Hahaha that's tight. That's awesome your mom bumps it. Seems like a lot of artists have a hard time getting their parents to take them serious. Does she help you with paying for equipment and stuff you need to record?
Kame: Lmaooooo, hell no! I ain't no trust fund kid. Everything I got I worked for. My mum is like my sister. She supports me no matter what, I support her no matter what.
CS: That's very admirable. Alright man, we're about to wrap this up I just have two more questions. Is there anything else Kame fans should look forward to in 2018?
Kame: You can expect a lot more new music, more videos, more NNB, more shows, more blazing.
CS: And is there something you want to say or anybody you want to give a shout out to?
Kame: RIP GREENLVNTERN. Go fuck with NNB. Shout out Hxrman, shout out Taskone, shout out Bvnde, shout out Rich James (@richjames_sf), shout out Kil6. 2018 we work, 2019 we coming for you.
