‘The Sound of Magic’ ep 1 - thoughts

I did it! I watched the first episode of The Sound of Magic. But you knew I would because I’ll always give anything Ji Chang Wook does a chance because I’m a softie (and I never learn a lesson). Also, Hwang In Yeop is the cutest 31 year old high school kid ever!

Anyways, I have mixed feelings but before I go further, you should know I do not enjoy television musicals. I don’t hate them I’m just very meh about them. But being the first musical K-drama, I want to give it a chance because I love fantasy stories and I can get past the musical part (I think).

About The Sound Of Magic:

The set up is pretty simple - there’s a poor student who is bullied in school, and can’t seem to catch a break. There’s rumors of a magician who is basically “the witch who lives at the end of the block” trope. People fear him and tell tales but haven’t experienced anything first hand. It’s not breaking boundaries or anything but there’s nothing bad about it so far.

The Music:

If you love Disney movies, you’ll probably love this drama. The song formats are super Disneyfied like Beauty and the Beast, Frozen, etc. There’s that intro song where the whole town (for this it’s all of the students) dances and then there is “the want” song where the lead sings about wanting a better situation. Then there’s the “I can show you the world” song the magician sings to draw the lead in.

Personally I find that very predictable so I fast forwarded through most of the songs (after about 30 seconds of making sure I know what they’ll be singing about.) But if you DO love musicals, the songs are well done and the singing is lovely.

The acting issue:

Choi Song Eun plays the leading lady and she’s great!  She’s acting her heart out and I’m loving her story line even if it is a bit predictable. Hwang In Yeop has barely done anything yet so I have no idea what he’ll be like but so far so good. I’m hoping the drama will be about lonely people who need comfort and I’m 100% here for that.

Let’s talk about Ji Chang Wook though: The issue (and I’m sure you knew this was coming) is Ji Chang Wook’s character The Magician. I’ve been looking at the tumblr tags seeing what people are saying (also hoping I’m not the only one feeling the way I do - I am though) and everyone’s like “he’s so hot” “love this drama cause he’s hot” and yes, he is very very hot. This is true. But his character just doesn’t translate very well. He spends a lot of time saying “do you believe in magic?” and taking large fancy steps and hanging off of carousels while showing off his cape. It feels like everyone in the drama is a real person and he’s sort of a cartoon lacking depth.

I’m watching his face and he’s trying to look thoughtful, etc and I can’t really figure out his motivation for anything. It’s like he’s missing depth (which I’m guessing is a directing problem since the dude can act). It’s only episode 1 but k-dramas are not usually subtle so we’ll see. On top of that he’s constantly having these conversations with the high school lead and it feels a little inappropriate? I know I know - it’s just a magical musical! But like, he’s a 35 year old man trying to playfully engage with a 16 year old at night and it just feels kinda weird. If you watch it you’ll see what I mean ;-)

Should You Watch The Sound Of Magic?

Yes! I’m very selfish and want you to watch it so we can talk about it (good or bad!). It’s doing a decent job telling the story and with the music. It’s not the best thing I’ve watched by a mile but it’s an interesting effort. And though I’ll probably make fun of it a lot, I’ll still enjoy parts of it (mostly Ji Chang Wook’s long floofy hair - LOVE IT ).

So it's been great to learn to cook via meal boxes given that I never learned from my mother due to her being the cooking equivalent of the Chernobyl meltdown, but my one thing with my meal box of choice is that every recipe is like "okay cook your seasoned delicious main item in some oil.... Now throw all that icky gross used oil out and put in some nice clean fresh oil for the next step :)" like who hurt you, recipe writer.
