You guys were oddly supportive of my creepy-Morgoth drawing.  I’m concerned.
...
Anyway, here’s a mountain-sized Oromë who may or may not be fused to Nahar’s back.
Tumblr media
That blurry thing above his right antler is a discarded drawing that didn’t erase properly, but we’re going to pretend it was intentional because if you look at it right you can pretend it’s Vala magic or something.  Maybe aurora borealis is the trail of his antlers as he rides across the sky and whenever he stops moving you can see it forming into ghostly outlines of animals and monsters.  Does Middle Earth already have lore for the northern lights or not?

I detested every minute of drawing that horse, I will do it again!
Anyway, I hoped I would get this out before the end of the year, alas it became the first artwork of the year instead. It's the comic I mentioned in my wips notes, and yeah, I know it doesn't make much sense for Fëanor to not recognize Miriel but I needed it for the plot, okay 😭
Plot explanation + Nerdanel bonus under the cut:
Very well, I had this idea stuck in my head for a while due to my dissatisfaction with many post reembodiment fëanorian fic (don't get me wrong, I enjoy the heck out of those fics, they just happen to not fully scratch the itch) and how it's either the fëanorian basically throwing themselves to the ground to apologize to those they hurt, something I don't really see happening, apologizing requires a lot of vulnerability, it's something very raw that I just can't see the fëanorians being able to do right off the halls (and I'm not giving the Valar any credit *harunf*) or, it goes the opposite direction, and none of the fëanorians apologize at all and it's just accepted with at most some control from the Valar, I just can't accept this while also assume they just went back to their regular places in Tirion no problem besides some people being mildly mad at them.
So this was my concoction, the first two stories wouldn't be about Fëanor at all actually, it would be an Aretyel and a Curufinrod stories running concurrently:
The first one is about Aredhel not initially wanting to ever see Celegorm after he used her as a motivation to hurt Luthien, but after Maeglin reembodiement she thinks that if she can take her son back maybe she should give her former friend a chance.
The second is initially basically Curufinrod through the ages as Finrod decides to talk to Curufin despite his better reason saying otherwise, Curufin is at first very scathing and refuses any talk at all but after a difficult conversation with Ëarwen (which is mostly her calling him a bitch) Curufin decides to reevaluate his past with Finrod, eventually reaching Celebrimbor (who is a curufinrodion in this) and their complicated relationship
And then finally, the Fëanor one, it begins some time after the others already began but runs with them as well, the beginning is basically this comic, Fëanor arrives and finds no one besides the woman he doesn't know is Miriel and accepts staying with her rather than trying to talk with his brothers, the truth is that Vairë sent the wrong hour to Arafinwë so that Miriel would get time with her son (Miriel doesn't know this, she also thinks they just left Fëanor alone) (Vairë also thought that at most she would mildly inconvenience a perfectly well paid envoy that at most would get a disappointed look from the king, never imagining that Nerdanel would show up as well)
(Considering having shorted parts for Maglor, who already had his therapy sessions in Rivendell, meeting Maedhros and Elwing again, and another for Caranthir finding out that he and Haleth had a child, Erestor, and not knowing how to go about it)
Bonus:

FIC IDEA VAULT #15: A BAGGINSHIELD AFTERLIFE REUNION/TIME TRAVEL/ FIX-IT/BILBO DESTROYS THE RING IN PLACE OF FRODO FIC
Back on my Bagginshield era, I'm reading fics on them (I stopped bc various SW ships and other ships had me on a chokehold, how about those last 15 on Good Omens Ep6?? :c) and listening to my playlist once more, I think I had since the start of the year with hardly any of my OTP around (except for my phone background) ANYWAY this is to inform you I am also back on my bullshit and I come with another fic idea, which will be put on hold until I can complete the other 164453196859 ideas I have. Ok, not that many, but I do have a lot of very detailed ideas that I do want to write and a bunch of half sentenced ones that are just ideas, so here we goooooooo
Bilbo dies on the way to Valinor and awakens on it as his 50 year old self, to the astonishment of the Elves, Gandalf and Frodo. Something is wrong with the afterlife, it is in the air and everyone is on edge, Frodo most of all, as he has felt this presence before.
Sauron may have died on Arda, but he was still in part present in the afterlife, wrecking havoc on everything. Bilbo embarks to the green hills of Yavanna's garden, the land where all Hobbits go, with Frodo and Gandalf. Upon reunitign with family and friends, Yavanna herself welcomes the brave hobbits but Bilbo can notice the tense manner in which she speaks to Gandalf and offers his help. Yavanna informs them that the various lands of the Valar are on lockdown as they face attacks from the darkness and they fear they may not last until Iluvitar can help them, but that is a mission that Gandalf and the other wizards don't know how long it will take. She is afraid for her husbands and needs a way to contact him. She believes having them all cut off from each other was the wrong choice, uniting their forces they will be able to hold off the darkness better than on their own. So, Bilbo is determined to once more become a burglar and enter another mountain. Yavanna does warn him though that this time, the dragon is on the outside of the mountain. Sauron has set Smaug onto the Mountain that is Mahal's domain.
Bilbo sets off with four trouble hobbits to sneak into the Dwarven Halls, managing to distract the dragon enough that he ramms into the mountain and knocks himself out. They find a way inside and find a funny scene, Bilbo's dwarves are attempting to take down the front doors, despite their maker trying to make them see reason. They had heard Smaug's attempts to draw them out, the last thing the dragon had told them, aimed at Thorin himself, was that he was going to go to the Gardens to find Bilbo himself and get his revenge. Bilbo had at that moment drawn away his attention and having not heard the thunderous racket for awhile, the dwarves inside had panicked and were now attempting to try to kill the dragon themselves. Bilbo laughs at their ridiculousness and is almost squished by 13 dwarves. Mahal knows they wouldn't be there unless his wife had sent them and Bilbo gives him the message Yavanna had given him.
Mahal himself is now more than ever determined to find a way to stop the rampage that Sauron is inflicting on their lands. He goes out the way the hobbits came in to take care of a knocked out Smaug, and together, the hobbits, the dwarves and a Valar set off for the Gardens once more.
Reunited, the Valar are planning and discarding plans faster than the others can follow, until Mahal has a very dangerous plan, which he calls the Durin Last Resort.
The reason that Sauron is now able to still remain in lands of the Valar is because he was able to draw power from the remaining rings still in Middle Earth at the time of the War of the Ring, destroying it had not completely cut him off. The other rings had to be found and destroyed before the One Ring was finally banished, only then would Sauron finally be defeated. Time was not a straight line, it happened all at once, and still, Mahal and Yavanna could sent people back as Mahal had done before for Durin in his various reincarnations.
This makes Frodo almost collapse from the anxiety, but he swears that he will try his best if he is asked to be the Ring Bearer again. Bilbo can't take seeing his dear nephew in so much pain, not when he knows that he wasted so much time by doing nothing but using the ring as a simple party trick. He offers himself to go and be the Ring Bearer this time, reasoning that even if Frodo went back to the beginning of his adventure, Sauron already had plenty of time to be prepared and on the lookout for the Ring, but when Bilbo got the Ring himself, Sauron was not strong enough to do much but be the necromancer.
Mahal agrees but Yavanna is not happy. She refuses to put Bilbo in such danger, unless the company also go with him. She wishes for this to be a second chance for the line of Durin, and thus Bilbo wouldn't be alone on his trials. They cannot be sure exactly when Bilbo will go back to, just that it will before the retaking of Erebor. He will also be the only one who will initially have his memories, everyone else will need to be told a special message to unlock those memories back in the world of the living.
Bilbo is then send back in time and back to life a couple of years before his adventure and sets to making things right not just for his friends but also for many others in his life.
Anway, sorry for the innaccuracies on the Valar and everything else, I will not read the Silm and will just wing it lol. Essentially, I want BAMF Bilbo who gets to reunite with his dwarves in the afterlife, and then gets send back into his past to redo the Quest and also go on to destroy the Ring in the place of Frodo. If he and his King are able to finally stop being idiots and actually speak on their feelings, well, we will see. Those two are worse at communication than an angel and demon I know, so it might take a while lol.
Any comments are welcome!

🍦🎨 for the ask game !

🍦 ⇢ name three good things about a character you hate
i think we all tend to hate badly-written characters more than characters we wouldn't like if we were in the story, so this question is kind of hard (!) because like. i don't want to find the silver-lining of bad writing? but also i guess by the end of ds9 i did sort of hate dukat for a combination of writing choices and for who that character is in the story, so...
(this is mostly about early seasons dukat)
i like that, in the story, dukat didn't become some sort of anti-hero like garak. i like that there was that comparison with garak, where neither is "reformed" but one is reflective and dynamic and accepts, and even welcomes in certain ways, the shift of power around bajor. i like that dukat was written to be genuinely concerned with power and that said power was something specific and fascistic and he took the chance to snatch at it when it was presented to him.
i like the cloying falsity dukat had with sisko and kira--always looking for an In, a way to be some sort of manipulating yes-man. like he was always operating in a sort of iannucci-death-of-stalin struggle for influence and never quite realizing that he was being laughed at and, despite his scheming, sisko and kira remain utterly unmoved. also it was very funny to witness.
i like that he was written to be the face of the backstory of the cardassian occupation--whether just as the small reminder through his presence or as a vehicle for certain plots (like the story of kira's mother). he wasn't the """charming""" nazi christoph waltz--garak was closer to that, if anyone--though he certainly tried to be charming (see point 2). it was more like: the writers knew they had to have a character there to represent the history they had written for the show's setting and dukat was, for the most part, a good character for that. like, you could see why kira didn't trust him, why she wanted to and did deck him, why she was so angry, why all the bajoran characters were so angry, and you didn't have to see any scenes directly portraying the occupation because the reality of it all was evident in dukat's disdain, insincerity, condescension, and deep lack of single grain of reflective remorse. the simple contrast of kira and dukat does a lot of work for the world-building and the fleshing out of these specific aliens and their political positioning of one another. it's interesting.
those are all sort of related but distinct enough choices for the character that warrant attention. i feel on the whole ds9 wasn't perfect at consistently giving voice to the anti-fascist themes of the story--showing and not telling doesn't always work best--but, with all the power-struggles going on within the world of the show, certain arguments solidified in the form of characters. and dukat for the most part exemplified everything a leader of people shouldn't be. he was a great foil for sisko and kira and even winn. and he felt like a person, which some fans i think have misinterpreted as "very complex," but that just means he felt lived in. familiar. not like an alien at all.
🎨 ⇢ link your favourite piece of fanart and explain why you like it
my favorite piece of fanart might be a bit selfish since this is one i asked for but i think that @matrose sort of went above and beyond on a simple ask-game drawing bc the below art is just sooo perfect to me?
i love the character arien in the silmarillion (or just, like, the tolkien legendarium, i guess, i'm not sure where else she appears) because a) female characters who invariably choose an independent life have always appealed and b) the very brief description tolkien provides of the character is genuinely stunning while also being relevant and thematic for story he builds on top of his made-up lore in the hobbit and the lord of the rings.
like: "The maiden whom the valar chose...to guide the vessel of the Sun was named Arien...[who] tended the golden flowers in the garden of Vana, and watered them with the bright dews of Laurelin [the tree that shed golden light before the Sun]... Arien the maiden was mightier than he, and she was chosen because she had not feared the heats of Laurelin, and was unhurt by them, being from the beginning a spirit of fire...not deceived [...] Too bright were the eyes of Arien... she was a naked flame, terrible in the fullness of her splendour."
not to get too into the sort of literary analysis here, the character tolkien chose for the sun was the kind that could've been corrupted, but wasn't, and who steered the Sun-ship unwavering and without fail while the world was reeling from a deeply-felt loss--a character unharmed by true heat and serving all.
and i think @matrose really captured several things about the above while reinterpreting brilliantly the symbol of this character:
the straight-backed posture, displayed in profile
the unaffected expression on the face
the way she's holding the sun behind her, as if she really is the true guide here
(though the above could be her holding the light of Laurelin before the sun was born, but either way--she is the one who can guide where that very powerful light goes)
the way there's a day and night (dawn/dusk?) version--another expression of arien's unwavering and uncorruputed character
the way the day-light is white, showing how perfectly bright and hot the sun is
the drapery! the jewelry! the way she is dressed with a specific style in the properties of sunlight
the colors of her clothes---my favorite part probably--the fact of a multicolored raiment speaks to the the depth of the character's power, the depth of the power in her charge, and the beauty that, one could say, is the driving force of like the entirety of all of tolkien's books. And she wears it like drapery!
(her raiment could be an interpretation of her pre-Sun-Ship, but again that doesn't undercut the thematics of the above detail)
her hair looks like embers
the Profile position again! because she is facing away from the viewer, so we don't have to look into her terrible eyes
it's just a really beautiful piece in my opinion and a lovely demonstration of how the artist interprets tolkien and the world <3
(i got so crazy about this fanart that i wrote a whole Extremely Weird fic about it)
anyway, i didn't want to repost matrose's art here, but everyone should please click on the link to go look at It.

This has been said by another anon, but you honestly have the best interpretation of the events in the Silmarillion, especially with Elwing's situation which I super super love (I had to unfollow and block other good blogs because of how borderline misogynistic their takes were on her). I wanna know, what is your reaction to Finwe joining Feanor in exile “because of the love that he bore Feanor” which basically makes Tirion kingless, showing his favoritism and cementing Fingolfin as a 'usurper' to most, especially in the fandom? For me, that was the moment I saw how he made such stupid-ass decisions. Like I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt with being considered a 'good' father and king but no way is my response to my oldest son pulling a knife on my younger son at some kind of meeting and getting exiled with 'ah well I’m siding with your brother who almost stabbed you'. He sucks so bad like y'all chose this dumbass over Thingol????
You're too kind, anon (^///^)
Finwe choosing to join Feanor is one of those things that I think was objectively the wrong choice, but I see how he got there. To me, it was one of Finwe's deeply flawed moments, which makes him a real character and not just an idealized Fantasy Elf King. It's also one of those moments where I would love to have more detail, because we get almost nothing on what Finwe's relationship with his later four children was like. Silm virtually only addresses his relationship with Feanor, so I understand why a lot of fans interpret this to mean Finwe showed favoritism towards Feanor/preferred him to his other kids, and the narrative does tell us Finwe paid particular attention to Feanor (however, given their family history, I don't think this is a huge surprise--he has a lot of reason to be worried about how Feanor will handle the family growing). The result though is that we get basically nothing about how Finwe and Fingolfin addressed the "Feanor pulls weapons on his brother in public" incident between them.
However--and maybe you will feel this is splitting hairs--I don't think Finwe chooses to go into exile because he thinks Feanor was in the right, but because he believed the Valar's punishment was unfair. He only has one quote on it:
"Feanor came indeed, for him alone Manwe had commanded to come; but Finwe came not, nor any of the others of the Noldor of Formenos. For said Finwe: 'While the ban lasts upon Feanor my son, that he may not go to Tirion, I hold myself unkinged, and I will not meet my people.'" (Of the Darkening of Valinor)
It's not much, but it's always suggested to me his issue was with the punishment imposed...and I find it hard to believe Tolkien held Finwe up intending him to be "good" and would then have him approve of one of his sons drawing a weapon on the other.
Furthermore, we know how highly Feanor values loyalty and how much he values Finwe's attention, so Finwe would have to know what a significant gesture this would be to Feanor in the wake of his being publicly exposed as having been manipulated by Melkor, and exiled. There's also the fact that Feanor's behavior is increasingly erratic and extreme, which must be an additional concern.
By the other side of the coin though, he must also know how it will look to Fingolfin.
It's true that at this time, Feanor and Fingolfin are both grown adults with families of their own. They aren't little boys chasing after daddy, but clearly Finwe's attention and affection still means something to him. And given Elves' immortality, I've always found it easy to believe that Elven parents maintain a much stronger presence in their children's esteem, simply because they never undergo the slow degradation of mind and body that mortal children expect to see in their parents as they age. But even setting that aside, it would be hard, I think, for Fingolfin not to be hurt by Finwe's choice, even if he understands why it was made. If Fingolfin harbored no resentment about the choice, I'd say we should nominate him for sainthood.
We see that during Feanor's "trial," Fingolfin is already asserting a willingness to forgive him for what was done. I talked about that here, and why I don't find "Fingolfin the usurper" a convincing take. It may be that Finwe and Fingolfin were not in disagreement that Finwe's going with Feanor was best--it may be that even Fingolfin thought it was better to have Finwe there to try to constrain Feanor and make him see sense (This is what he was talking to Finwe about when Feanor originally bursts in with the sword) rather than leave him to fester in Formenos with only his sons, all of whom support him (In Morgoth's Ring, even Nerdanel is not with him in Formenos, one of the few people he actually listened to; they've separated due to Feanor's troubling recent behavior).
When it comes to fights between kids, parents are often reluctant to take sides. This can be true even where one child is obviously in the wrong, even repeatedly. There are any number of reasons Finwe didn't want to see the rift between Feanor and Fingolfin as being that serious, not least of all because I'm sure he wanted them to get along and be brothers, and he loved both of them. When Melkor's hand in Feanor's unrest comes to light, this must have been deeply upsetting for Finwe. Thinking that his child had been targeted by Melkor and used by him to cause these problems among the Noldor would be alarming, and there would be a sense of violation there, probably especially for Feanor. Very possibly Finwe believes that the Valar are punishing Feanor for Melkor's actions.
"Now the unrest of the Noldor was not indeed hidden from the Valar...Then at last the root was laid bare, and the malice of Melkor revealed; and straightway Tulkas left the council to lay hands upon him and bring him to judgement. But Feanor was not held guiltless, for he it was that had broken the peace of Valinor and drawn his sword upon his kinsman..." (Of the Silmarils)
I've said this a lot about the situation of the House of Finwe, but it was complicated. Do I think Finwe made the right choice in exiling himself with Feanor? No, not really. Do I see how he thought it was necessary or would cause less damage? Yeah, I do. People often don't see clearly when it comes to their kids, and I think Finwe has probably always harbored a lot of concern over Feanor because of what happened with Miriel, and possibly guilt over the fact that Feanor never reconciled himself to Finwe's remarriage or his additional children. He may feel that he needs to show this loyalty to Feanor to make up for the other things, or he may feel that leaving Feanor alone at this time will only make his mental condition worse.
Or he may just love Feanor more than his other kids. But I don't prefer that explanation.
Finwe is a flawed person. I certainly think it's possible to characterized him as a little selfish, and willfully blind to his children's conflict, and the scale of Feanor's dislike for his step-mother and her kids. But he'd hardly be the first parent to do that. I don't think there was ever any malice in it, and I don't generally take to interpretations that he openly and heavily favored Feanor over his other children. I think it may have felt that way to Indis' kids at times (although I don't think Feanor ever saw it that way, since he never seems to have managed to feel secure about anyone's affection), but I don't think Finwe genuinely loved Feanor more or wanted better things for him than the other kids. I think he was trying to balance Feanor's huge and volatile feelings with his own desires, and then with Indis' needs and the needs and desires of their children, and he probably was excessively concerned with Feanor's feelings--but Feanor also has a way of demanding people pay attention to his feelings.
In conclusion: Yeah I think Finwe made a subpar choice there, but I don't hate him or think he was awful (although perhaps something of an oblivious father). I think he wanted very much to believe that everything could be fine and good in Aman, so much so that he downplayed actual conflicts among the Noldor and particularly among his children, on the hope that everything would work itself out eventually (And who's to say? If not for Melkor, maybe it would have.) And in the end, he pays for those choices with his life.

23 (tulip)!! for guys of choice
The sky has never felt so big or so blue. Ashe lies on her back and stretches her arms out to both sides, letting the sun warm her tired muscles.
There had been so much horse riding. So much walking. Not that Ashe would ever complain -- especially not where anyone else could hear, she would rather die than let Nova know she needed a break -- but it was nice, either way, to be still. To be surrounded by nature.
The sunflower she'd scrambled up onto swayed, lightly, in the breeze. Bees the size of a house floated overhead with small figures on their backs. Wood elves, Ashe assumed; the thought made her smile.
She hadn't seen so many gathered in one place since leaving home. Even then, it was frowned upon. Too many of them in one place ran the risk of drawing attention, of bringing trouble. They'd mostly hid out in their little tunnels, the holes between roots of towering redwoods.
A shrill whistle startles Ashe out of her reverie. She jumps, setting the flower she rests on to swaying. In a breath, in a blink, she's leaning over the edge with an arrow notched and pointed downward, already glaring.
But no; there's no threat. Only Balgar, standing with one hand held over his eyes and a pair of shears in one hand.
"Steady, friend," he calls. "I call truce. I wanted to help with the, ah..."
He trails off, gesturing to the towering flower stalks around him. The rest of the sentence goes unsaid, but Ashe catches his meaning anyway. She lets her bow rest and drops the arrow back into her quiver, then flips down to wrap her arms around the stalk of her sunflower.
The ride down makes her laugh despite herself, squinting at the fast-approaching ground. She nearly falls, but a hand at her back holds her steady.
"Oh!" Ashe exclaims, turning to face her second visitor.
She'd failed to notice Nova, somehow. Unusual; he rarely managed to keep himself quiet even when they needed stealth. But he's quieter now, at least, only clearing his throat when she raises an eyebrow at him.
"Ah, yes. Well... I thought it might provide some helpful insight into the local magics, to study what you've learned," he offers, looking a little sheepish and a lottish disgruntled.
Ashe sighs. "You won't be able to do it yourself. It isn't proper magic like yours. But you can watch, I guess."
Nova nods at that, apparently willing to follow instructions. Ashe bites her tongue to keep from a snappish remark; it won't help anyone if she spends her time riling him up. So she takes the shears from Balgar's hands and sets, instead, to snipping the buds of tulips from the ground beneath their feet.
"This won't be as potent as the formal valar," Ashe offers, piling the flowers into Nova's empty hands. "You have to wait for the flowers to reach their full size for that. But this is just for practice, and you don't need the real enchantments, anyway."
Balgar blinks at Nova, and then back to her. "Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I was under the impression you weren't a magical lady."
It takes a lot of restraint for Ashe to bite back the angry retort that sits, barbed and pointed, on her tongue. She flaps a hand at Balgar instead.
"Give me your helmet. Come on, before the flowers wilt."
He does as he's told, at least, which is nice. The only reason he doesn't ask questions, Ashe suspects, is because he's too baffled to know where to start. She takes his helmet and flips it upside down, rests it in the damp grass. Then she pulls the tulips from Nova's hands and sets the bulbs inside.
Ashe leans to pick up a rock from the ground, with a few sprigs of the golden baby's breath stems that hide among the blades of grass. She smashes the flowers together as thoroughly as she can without denting the helmet, until the tulip petals are nothing but smudges of color on the metal, until the baby's breath starts to leak the shimmering metallic ichor that gives the ink its distinctive color.
Then she gestures for Balgar and Nova to sit down in front of where she crouches. To her surprise, they both do; they don't even question it.
It's nice to be the one who knows things, for once, Ashe decides. Then she sticks her fingers into the gold pigment she's created and starts to draw in big, looping movements across Balgar's bare palm.
"What kind of boon am I getting?" he asks. "Luck? Dexterity?"
Ashe shakes her head. She realizes, belatedly, that her tongue is poking through her teeth, and she tucks it away. "I'm not that good at it yet. This is just to help with exhaustion and hunger."
It had been the first one she'd learned. It's simple, repetitive: a series of overlapping circles, enough of them that it almost starts to look like vines on his skin.
"Hmph," Balgar says. "I'd like to still be able to eat my dinner, though."
"Do whatever you want," Ashe says. "It'll fade if you wash it off."
Balgar nods, satisfied. When she's done with his hand, Ashe turns to Nova expectantly. He doesn't hold out a hand right away; she has to offer her own, first, and only then does he lay his fingers over hers.
She sets to work on a much bigger piece, this time. It's a more intricate pattern, stretching from his wrist to his elbow. She has to concentrate all her energy into it, trying to remember what she'd seen one of the other elves do just this morning.
Nova watches her intently, his brow creased. "What does this one do?" he asks. His hand, clearly itching for a pencil, twitches against Ashe's thigh.
"Nullifies arcane energies," Ashe says, grinning with one half of her mouth. "Good luck casting any spells for the next twelve hours. This one doesn't wash."
Nova curses and snatches his hand back from her. Ashe can't help laughing. It turns to wheezes when Nova raises his hand, clearly intending to cast a cantrip that will send her running, and instead only manages a few errant sparks of gold.

In the Third Age, what kind of relationship did Thranduil have with the remaining great Elves (Galadriel, Elrond, Círdan, Glorfindel and Celeborn) who were still in Middle Earth? How do you think they felt about him and vice versa? Also, what kind of presence would Thranduil have at council (such as a meeting of the White Council or the Council of Elrond), in your opinion?
My opinion on this changed (relatively) recently, and it is based on: In the ruins of Eregion and before the gates of Moria, Legolas said the people of Eregion were 'strange', but there was no hostility. No reaction to 'star of the House of Fëanor'. He didn't even try to draw any line between himself and them when their friendship with dwarves was mentioned. (The friendship faded because all the specific elves and dwarves involved DIED, you guys.) And, of course, Legolas shows nothing but respect and admiration for Elrond and Galadriel.
My conclusion: Unless Legolas slept through all his history classes, Thranduil has been deliberately downplaying divisions between different groups of elves. (Possibly this has to do with how his father embracing those divisions was a not-insignificant contributing factor in his death.) And unless Legolas was displaying considerably more diplomacy and restraint than he displayed at any other time, he has a good impression of Elrond and Galadriel.
(Also, Aragorn is clearly reasonably well-respected in Mirkwood, presumably at least partially on Elrond's recommendation.)
So my analysis is: Thranduil is on good terms with the remaining High Elves. There's no evidence regarding his participation or lack thereof in councils, but whatever it was he was evidently satisfied with it.
Moving on to headcanon:
Oropher was Celeborn's cousin (through his mother; Oropher isn't a descendant of Elmo). They knew each other well in Doriath, but their falling-out over Oropher's hatred of Galadriel was severe, though they both remained on good terms with additional cousin Amdír.
So when Thranduil deliberately distances himself from Oropher's hostility, he categorizes Celeborn as an uncle-figure (and Celebrían and Amroth were already his younger cousins).
So basically: Celeborn and Galadriel are Thranduil's 'uncle' and 'aunt'. He respects and cares for them a lot but he does have to push back a bit because they can be overbearing. (And he is a 'nephew' who they care for and support, though they don't agree with all of his decisions.)
Elrond, who married Celebrían, is therefore Thranduil's cousin and more of a peer. No, he doesn't think he's Elrond's equal in loremaster-ness or healing or mystic line-of-Lúthien power, but they're not too far apart in age, they're the same generation if you class Elrond with Celebrían, and at the beginning of the Third Age they were both new-ishly bereft of the leader they'd been following, and ffs they are grown adults. They each think the other can be ridiculously bullheaded.
Glorfindel is A WEIRDO. Thranduil has what he would consider to be a healthy skepticism of the Valar, and thinks their wishy-washy careful interference in the Second/Third Ages was either too much or too little, possibly both. Glorfindel seems… fine, basically, but VERY weird, and Thranduil isn't keen on what he represents. (Glorfindel has seen Thranduil's partying habits in at least one other Lord of Gondolin.)
Círdan is Everyone's Grandpa — lack of blood relationship in many cases is irrelevant — and reserves the right to think they're being ridiculous.
…I'm going to say Thranduil was invited to White Council meetings but only went to one because he really, really didn't like Saruman. (When he found out about Saruman's fall he didn't say 'I told you so', but he did say 'I knew it'. A lot.) He may have sent an observer to take notes.

Alright. I listen to the LotR soundtrack WAY too much while I'm studying/doing homework, so, in honor of my classes starting up again (whee) here are some of my favorite tracks.
Under the cut because I tend to rant:
The Shire and Bag End: Warm, homey, pastoral. I love it. The most calming songs I've ever listened to. It always makes me jump when Gandalf starts singing but that's ok.
Flaming Red Hair: Reminds me of Celtic folk/trad music, which I listen to a lot. Cheerful and upbeat
The Passing of the Elves: Haunting, beautiful. Gives me shivers. I can't really listen to it while I'm reading because I get distracted.
Rivendell: Light and beautiful. Captures the feeling of the elves who remain in Middle Earth perfectly. I love how it incorporates the Shire theme because Elrond was really just trying to establish a home and we're seeing it from the hobbit's point of view, so it means he succeeded and ---
The Road Goes Ever On... (parts 1 and 2): The way the Fellowship theme and the Shire theme are blended together, home and heroism, boldness and unassuming strength, sorrow and hope. This one usually makes me tear up. Which is a problem.
The Three Hunters: Quintessential Lord of the Rings. When I think of the soundtrack I hear this track.
Edoras, The Court of Meduseld, and Theoden King/"The Funeral of Theodred": The polar opposite of the Shire theme, rugged and dangerous, bleak and betrayed, but with the feeling that there's still something there worth protecting. Also I just really love Rohan.
Arwen's Fate/"The Grace of the Valar": This one usually makes me cry. The feeling of Middle Earth as post-apocalyptic really comes out in this one. Evokes a setting that was once much higher and more beautiful, but is now fading along with the elves as the age of men draws near. The shadow of the Silmarillion that overlies all parts of LotR really hits me with this track.
and, an honorable mention: Erebor, from The Hobbit soundtrack. I don't agree with all the choices they made for those movies, but the music remains great.

12,20,22 silm or just the legendarium in general?
Ooh, nice! Thanks anon!
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
I mean, the obvious answer is Elwing, but there's already a lot of posts out there about why people should at least treat her with more understanding and compassion even if they don't like her. So I'm actually gonna go with the Valar as a whole! I think there's a common perception in the fandom of the Valar as gods given the roles they occupy in the story and the world, which leads into a weird dissonance where they're simultaneously criticized for interfering too much and not enough. After all, if they're all-powerful beings, isn't it their responsibility to *checks notes* make sure nothing bad ever happens while also never infringing on the free will of any being in existence?
If they are gods or god-like figures though, I think they're less akin to depictions of the Christian god and more like the Norse or the Greek gods - very powerful beings with unique perspectives on the world due to their responsibilities and relationships within it, who also have flaws and who make mistakes that have drastic consequences. And on a meta level, they need to make those mistakes because there is no story otherwise - let's just avoid the whole Trojan war by having Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera wisely and peaceably agree to a draw!
Anyways, while I think it's valid to criticize and disagree with the Valar's decisions, I also think it's a lot more interesting to examine them as actual characters inextricably involved in the events of the narrative, looking at what kinds of roles they occupy in the legendarium - both in terms of their in-universe positions and in terms of their meta significance. What concepts or themes do they represent? What do they see their role in the world as, and what roles are they perceived as having by others? What types of perspectives or relationships do they have with other characters, and how does that inform their decisions? It might also be interesting to do an intertextual comparison of the Valar with other mythological figures.
20. part of canon you found tedious or boring
I still have not actually finished the Unfinished Tales, and at this point, I'm committed to the bit.
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
I don't know how ignored it is, but I am intrigued by whatever the hell Galadriel was doing for most of the First Age. Girl explicitly comes to Middle-earth on a colonizing mission (as opposed to revenge or familial loyalty or Noldorin self-determination), spends a while chilling in Doriath learning magic from Melian and presumably making sexually charged eye contact with Celeborn, and then goes on an ambiguously prolonged trip over the mountains before coming back after half the continent's been destroyed to tell Eönwe thanks but no thanks on that pardon. What were you up to, o maiden crowned with radiant garland? What were you doing (apart from Celeborn)?

I have a lot of joking reasons (and one serious one) for why Beleg didn’t get reincarnated during the First Age, but my favorite is that everyone in the Halls of Mandos was always talking smack about Túrin (especially the ones that died as a direct result of existing in his Aurora of Doom™) except for Beleg who was like “Heck no not on my watch” and kept beating everybody up and got grounded in the Halls until the Third Age as a result.
Transcription:
[Mandos:] “And why are you here, my child?” [Finduilas:] “I--I’m not quite sure.  I--” [Gwindor:] “Finduilas!! ... Eru, I knew Túrin would screw up protecting you.” [Mandos:] “Túrin again?  I swear, if I had a Silmaril for every time someone--” [Fëanor:] “No!  My Silmarils!  (Only mine.)” [Mandos:] “Shut up Fëanor, we know.  Anyway, as I was saying, I kinda hope he dies soon or something before he can cause any more--” {action frame} [Mandos:] “That just earned you another thousand years here, young man!” [Beleg:] “Worth it.”

Part 2 - Basic Concepts of Miraculous Ladybug: Kwami
Kwamis are a fun concept and one of the main draws of the series. They make sense story-wise because, firstly, our characters need some support system. And since a lot of conflicts are centred around secret identities, characters should be able to discuss their double life with someone. As magical beings they could also be used to expand the lore, introduce new concepts and drive forward both the plot and character development. It doesn't always happen but Kwamis are a good idea. Some people who write AU's think that Kwamis are redundant, but I have to disagree.
Tumblr media
Origins and nature
Where do Kwamis come from? What are they? It's never explained. Oh wait, it was explained in a comic people can accidentally find. You decide to explain the origins and nature of magical beings who are one of the key elements in your magic system and worldbuilding IN A SIDE COMIC, which has zero effect on your main story. Sounds legit.
Here it is.
Tumblr media
So, Kwamis are abstract creatures. They can become tangible and interact with the world because of the miraculous jewels. Essentially, each Miraculous acts as an anchor to the material world for Kwami. They existed since the beginning of time and were invisible observers of the universe. Until they settled on Earth and observed how humanity came to be. This is where things get interesting.
Kwamis are the embodiment of abstract concepts. But, some abstract concepts were created by people (like everything mentioned in the comic: beauty, math, love, etc).
Kwamis wanted to help humans. And then, a human, who couldn't see, hear or touch a Kwami creates miraculous jewels. And now these beings can interact with the world, use their powers and grant them to humans. Yet, they are completely under control of their holder. I'll discuss it later, but why did Kwamis accept this deal? They are practically enslaved. At the same time they care about people and generally love humanity.
Tumblr media
According to the wiki Kwamis grant powers because of "the privilege of having the ability to be perceived by mortals". What? Did I read that right? Kwamis agreed to be enslaved and used as a power source, because they wanted to interact with material world. That's it, guys, end of the story.
We also know these things about nature and abilities of Kwamis from the show:
1) need food, but only to provide the power for the holder;
2) can't phase through precious metals (Chloe's bracelet in "Rogercop"), their own miraculous and humans;
3) they can control if they phase through things or not – meaning that if they want to, they can (this way Tikki can stay in Marinette’s purse without much trouble and Plagg sleeps on Adrien’s pillow);
4) they can perform magic without a holder but they don’t control it very well, there are certain types of things that they can’t do without a holder;
5) they are immortal but can get sick for some reason, a non-magical reason mind you;
6) technology can't detect them in any way, you can't film, photograph or record their voices (writers establish this many times, but promptly forget all about their own rules in "Optigami", where Marinette talks with Kwamis over the phone without any problems).
If I missed something important, then let me know.
Look, the questions related to origins and motivations of Kwamis might not be very prominent in your story right now, but you must answer them in case you might need to involve these facts in the plot down the line. It's important to avoid contradictions in the serialised story with liquid plot, that can't be set in stone. It's a made up world for the sake of everything sacred! You can make up explanations and rules, of course as long as they don't contradict common sense.
Plausible ideas for origins and nature of Kwamis:
1) Kwamis are immortal spirits, whom humans accidentally summoned and bound with spells to Miraculous stones. They remember their existence before this. This version doesn't really explain their desire to serve people and love for humanity, however. It would be more logical for Kwamis to resent people for enslaving them. It doesn't explain how humans could create those spells and Miraculous stones either.
2) Kwamis are physical manifestations of abstract concepts who existed simply as fragments of matter for a very long time without sentience, until they were accidentally summoned through the Miraculous stones and bound by humans to serve them. Kwamis do not remember their existence before Miraculous. In this version Kwamis serve humans and love them because they have never known a different kind of existence. Unfortunately, it doesn't provide any explanation on the creation of Miraculous and spells.
3) Kwamis are gods, who created the universe with all its elements and concepts including humanity (similar to Valar and Maiar in Tolkien's Legendarium). They wanted to help their creations but discovered that their power was too wild and unpredictable for that. So, Kwamis decided to give up their free will and magical independence to help humanity. Together they created Miraculous stones for humans to use and sealed themselves inside. Kwamis as gods were abstract concepts, who didn't have a body. The act of sealing their power in the Miraculous gave them an opportunity to interact with outside world (an anchor) and each Kwami chose an small animal form (because humans easily formed bonds with animals, had animal companions (pets), small animals look non-threatening and familiar). Kwamis intentionally choose certain animal forms to suit the human symbolism. Humans later used magic that Kwamis discovered for them to place spells upon small gods (spells related to identity protection and so on). This version answers most questions, but if Kwamis are gods then powers they grant to people seem to be rather small.
Feel free to add more. I would be interested to hear your ideas.
Identity Protection
In "Origins" we learn that Wayzz can sense the aura of Butterfly Miraculous, a negative aura of activated Butterfly Miraculous, to be more precise. And yet, Tikki and Plagg are genuinely surprised to discover the identities of their holders in "Dark Owl". There are several things wrong with that.
Can Kwamis sense each other's presence? They shouldn't be able to do this to protect the identities of their holders. On the other hand, they are ancient spirits. So, their inability to sense each other seems weird. Unless it's the same situation as with the spell that does not allow them to speak the name of their holder aloud.
But if they can sense each other like Wayzz did, then it means that Plagg and Nooroo were living in the same house for over a year and nothing happened. I mean, Plagg could have just come upstairs, take off the brooch from Gabriel, while he is asleep and return it back to Fu.
This question lies right here, on the surface. And that's only one massive and very obvious plothole. How to fix it? Establish that Kwami can't sense each other for identity protection. In "Origins" Fu meditates on his balcony and Wayzz sees a charged Akuma flying by. That's how they discover that Butterfly is in Paris and the Miraculous is in the wrong hands. Perhaps, Gabriel akumatizes someone for the first time to survey the surroundings and general public is not aware of this. This works better in the narrative, giving Fu time to select holders for Ladybug and Black Cat. It also establishes whether Hawkmoth can remove the Akuma from someone without Ladybug and discharge it. Maybe it depends on the circumstances (sometimes he can, but if this person was akumatized many times or their emotions are too strong and their mind doesn't want to let Akuma go then Hawkmoth can't pull the butterfly out with his magic). This scenario allows for Volpina to happen on "Heroes' Day". Silly recurring Akumas like Gigantitan and Mr. Pigeon could still happen. In this case Gabriel didn't want to akumatize the guy more than 70 times on purpose. It just keeps happening against his better judgement because evil butterflies are automatically attracted to Mr. Ramier. This way repeated attacks of Mr. Pigeon annoy Hawkmoth just as much as they do the heroic duo of Paris (I did not sign up for this Nathalie!).
Let's come back to the spell mentioned earlier for a moment. Kwamis can't say the name of their current holder out loud, but apparently, they can exploit a loophole in the spell by confirming the identity of their holder in another way. The spell doesn't work with other holders. Kwami can say the names of other holders if they know their identity. That being said, can the holder order the Kwami to tell them the identities of other heroes if they know them?
Kwamis know how each Miraculous looks with or without camouflage. Can the holder order the Kwami to tell them how each Miraculous looks in disguise (I liked that Grimoire doesn't have pictures of camouflage for identity protection)? Guardians can recognise Miraculous in any mode (Su Han). Did Fu teach Marinette this? Does she know how each Miraculous looks like unactivated?
Oh! Since we are discussing camouflage, let's take a moment to appreciate the Mother Of All Plotholes. Plagg didn't recognise Peacock because of the plot.
Tumblr media
Relationship with Holder
I absolutely loved the idea that Kwamis must obey their holder introduced in "Sandboy". This concept opens tons of plot opportunities. It's such a great idea that makes sense, has potential, can create conflict. Why, oh, why didn't writers develop it more?
Like, it was so good. It can be a great push for character development. This concept resolves so many existing inconsistencies within the plot. It's mind-blowing.
Why can't Nooroo simply leave Gabriel, so that he wouldn't be able to transform? Because Gabriel bound him with Miraculous to always stay near.
In "Sandboy" Tikki asks Marinette's permission before going to the meeting. Plagg lies to Adrien instead. This implies that usually Plagg's holders weren't kind to him or feared his power (Su Han's remark in "Furious Fu"). Perhaps, his holders were taught to keep the Kwami of destruction under constant control. So, Plagg in turn has learned not to ask, because if he doesn't ask permission then his holder can't deny him freedom with magic.
Can Kwami lie to their holder? Maybe they can't lie to their holder about their nature, origins and powers and other Miraculous (but Kwamis can't reveal the location of Miracle Box, Guardian's identity and can't confirm identities of other holders known to them in any way). Kwami would be forced to speak even if they don't want to. That's why Nooroo told Gabriel everything about the abilities of the Butterfly Miraculous and the wish secret of Ladybug and Black Cat.
But Kwamis can lie to their holder according to Plagg in "Sandboy". If Kwamis can lie about everything (including powers) then Nooroo didn't have any reason to be honest with Gabriel way back in "Origins".
Speaking of Gabriel and Nooroo. Can Kwamis harm their holder? Maybe doing so would harm the Kwami as well. Can they do it only when the holder is not wearing the Miraculous? Can Kwami take their Miraculous from their holder? Will they disappear if they try to do so? It seems like Kwami disappears only when the holder takes off the Miraculous with the intention of renouncing power, the words "I renounce you" are not necessary.
Other Kwamis can take the Miraculous from people if it's not their own (Wayzz in "Feast"). But what if it wasn't possible. Imagine what could happen if it's not possible to take the Miraculous by force from the transformed or untransformed hero. Just like Lady WiFi couldn't remove Ladybug's mask. A person has to willingly give up the Miraculous. Only in this case, it's possible to take it. For example, somewhere around the middle of season 3 Hawkmoth could have trapped Ladybug and Chat Noir and cut off any escape routes. His Akuma tries to take both Miraculous, but they don't budge. Then afterwards, every Akuma tries to manipulate the heroes using hostages, illusions or mind control. It's hard to say whether this version will be better than canon, but it's a fascinating theory.
You can use the idea of obedience to create more situations contrasting the relationship of Plagg and Adrien, Gabriel and Nooroo. I liked how canon created a storyline about Plagg learning to control his powers without a holder and Adrien helping him. However, why would you stop here? Give us some flashbacks about Plagg's previous holders, tell us what kind of people they were. Expand the lore and add some character development for Plagg and Adrien. The same thing goes for Marinette. What kind of battles did they have in the past? What kind of people past holders were? Did Ladybug and Black Cat heroes always get along well? Were they allies or enemies? Were they always lovers?
Give us more information about Butterfly and Peacock holders. Perhaps Nooroo has dreams about his past holders who were good people. Show us what kind of things a Butterfly holder with good intentions can do. Tell us more about Duusu and her past holders, sprinkle in a few bits of info about Emilie and Duusu's relationship, just a few vague hints to preserve the mystery. You have a lot of screentime each season and instead of doing filler episodes dedicated to love drama, you can use them for developing minor characters, relationships between them and lore.

Torn Apart (Kili x Reader)
A/N: So this is a oneshot from my LOTR book on Wattpad. It's angsty and probably not very good, but if you'd like to give it a read I'd love to hear what you think! If you like it, feel free to reblog. ALSO, since I'll probably be posting a lot of oneshots from my Wattpad, please let me know if there are any other warnings that you think should be given at the beginnings of my chapters.
Warnings: angst/violence, death, Hobbit movie canon
~~~
You ran up the side of the mountain, clumsily slashing at orcs as they came at you from either side.  As you fought them off, however, there was only one thing in your mind.  Kili.  You had to get to Kili.  From below, you had seen him up on a ledge, and then, to your horror, you had seen Azog scaling the mountain to reach the dwarf.  In that moment, a deep emotion that you couldn't quite identify prompted you to follow.
    So there you were, running as fast as you could towards the ledge.  You were very clumsy and tall for an elf, tripping over stones with your exceptionally long legs.  Despite this, however, you still managed to make it to the top- and just in time, it seemed.  Your heart plummeted as you froze in your tracks, horrified at the sight before you.
      There was the Pale Orc, holding Kili roughly with a dagger pointed at his stomach.  As he raised the knife above his head, ready to strike, you snapped out of your daze and charged at Azog, yelling to try and distract him.  Making a quick decision, you knocked Kili forcefully out of the orc's grip and redirected his aim at yourself.
      ----
      It seemed to happen in slow motion.  Y/N grabbed Azog's forearm and he struck, his knife going straight into her stomach.
      Y/N's laugh immediately came to his mind.  Her smile, the first time they had met.  Her kindness towards him when he was locked in Mirkwood's dungeons.  Their late conversations that lasted hours.  How she had confided in him of her wish to know what haplened to those who had passed.  Her desire to "go home," as she said.  To see her dead mother and father again.  Her gentle spirit.  Her smile.  Her voice.
      "No!" Kili screamed, scrambling to get up.  "No!"
      Azog dropped Y/N's body, turning to Kili and drawing his weapon again, before hearing a shout from Thorin and running off in that direction.
      Breathing heavily, Kili kneeled down next to Y/N and picked up her top half, laying it in his lap.  He stroked her hair gently, tears running down his face.
      Y/N was struggling to keep her eyes open.  Her wound was bleeding rapidly, and her skin was losing its color.  Blood was everywhere.  Kili tried to stop the bleeding, but he felt a hand push his away weakly.
      "It- it's no use, Kili," Y/N whispered, her breathing ragged and shallow.  "Let-" she coughed, her lips stained red with blood, "Let me die... in peace."
      "Please, Y/N," Kili pleases with her, tears running down his face.  "Please don't say that."
      "Why not?" she breathed, smiling weakly.  "It is only how I wish to die."
      Straining to smile back, Kili took her hand in his own, placing it on his cheek.  Y/N sucked in a breath and winced as a wave of pain came over her.  She squeezed Kili's hand, closing her eyes and groaning softly.  Panicking, Kili began to talk to her, trying anything to keep her awake.  Anything to give them a moment longer.
      "Y/N, do you remember when we first met? When I was imprisoned, and you brought me food?  You were so kind to me and my kin, even my uncle Thorin liked you."
      "Shhh," Y/N breathed, and Kili fell silent.  "Do you hear that?"
      "Hear what?" Kili furrowed his brow, confused.  All he could hear was the clanking of swords and shouts of pain from the battlefield below.  It all seemed so far away now.
      "The music," Y/N smiled, her eyes still closed.  "Isn't it beautiful, Kili?  It's just the way my mother always said it would be, when she told the stories of the Valar.  Oh, isn't it beautiful?"
      "Yes," Kili breathed, knowing that Y/N was nearly gone.  This was his only chance.
      "Amrilame, Y/N," he whispered, feeling her body beginning to tremble.
      "I- I don't know what... What that means," she said in a barely audible voice.  Her eyes fluttered open, and though their eyes met, Kili could tell that she was not looking at him.  She was seeing something else.
    "It means I love you."
      Y/N smiled peacefully, her hand squeezing his before going limp.  Her chest was still, and her cheeks were pale.  She was gone.  Y/N was gone. She had been torn away from Kili before they had even truly come to know each other.
      ----
      Y/N's body was burned along with Thorin and Fili's.  Kili stood next to her corpse, looking over her peaceful features one last time before they were enveloped by flames.  Y/N was home.
