my favourite sexuality for comic book characters to be is "we made this other character canonically queer because of their relationship with them but for some reason they are still canonically straight"
like wade wilson? mostly canonically queer because of the period where he was married to cable. he was in a queer relationship, so we have to just make him canonically queer. (Yes I know it's not the only reason, I have read all his extremely camp early 00s comics, but lets be real they'd have kept insisting that was all just a joke if it wasn't for Cable and Deadpool).
cable? definitely straight. 100% straight. obviously cable is straight. his relationship with wade is only gay during the & Deadpool, in the Cable part of the book it's very straight. He stands next to a woman sometimes, that's how you can tell it's not gay.
Kitty has, finally, been allowed to come out, but for like a decade, Illyana was canon queer because she dated Kitty, but Kitty was definitely straight and would never date a woman, and no one at marvel thought there was anything weird about that.
[Image Description: a very straight character, interacting with another straight character, in a very believably straight way]
Marvel has way more of these, mostly by virtue of having more queer characters and also chris clairmont (you can never understate the impact of chris clairmont in these matters) but Tim Drake and Kon Kent spring to mind from DC.
I think you could even make a solid argument that 616 Tony and Steve are that, given Tony is out now and Steve, somehow, still isn't.
anyway you don't really get these in any other medium, because they require multiple writers who all wildly disagree with one another to all write the same characters to happen, but i love them, and as much as I want Cable and Kon to come out, I kind of hope this never stops happening in comics, it's just never not funny.

Top 10 Vigilantes Present Mics
#10: Bucktooth Mic. Young Mic eats a hot dog. That’s it
#9: Crowd Control Mic. The angle of this drawing gives him a unique expression of anguish.
#8: Muppet Mic. I think he hurt his wrist, because it’s merely a noodle now.
#7: Shrug Mic. A special shrug for when you’re just not that into him.
#6: Erased-Voice Mic. As well as this unique shocked expression, this panel has so many Present Mic Lore implications! A truly enriching manga panel.
#5: Trepanning Mic. The use of his speech bubble’s tail to represent the pain caused by his yelling is an especially fun use of panel layout. I have to respect that.
#4: Goggle Mic. If you ever wondered why Mic chose sunglasses for his hero costume/signature look, this panel makes it immediately obvious. (It also took me back to when I showed my friend a picture of Mic, and they immediately clocked him as a sexual predator. But I’ll post more on that another time.)
#3: Flying Mic. He levitates across for several panels like this. Not sure how! Good going, Mic! (Maybe, since they’re paneled together, he was launched by Aizawa!)
#2: Upside Down Mic. He probably posed like this to tease Aizawa about some of his usual moves? Maybe. Or for fun. Probably for fun.
#1: Spin-to-Win Mic. Three Mics, an intricate office chair maneuver, and the much gentler “yeah?” with a toned-down smile to match. This man is pulling out all the stops trying to get that dinner date. He may not have succeeded in-universe, but he definitely succeeded on this list.

Kawi and his sense of Self
I've had Thoughts jumbling around my head for a few days, ever since @waitmyturtles started watching Be My Favourite (and sped through all 7 eps - so great to have you on board!) and having read some really great posts about time travel, the idea of 'present' and 'past', truth, and Kawi's character growth (here, here, here, and here are just a few examples by @waitmyturtles, @rocketturtle4, @wen-kexing-apologist, and @ginnymoonbeam).
But it was @rocketturtle4's addition on this post that made me think more about Kawi and his sense of self, specifically the bolded part of this line:
The overall theme of being who you are regardless of the time you are in feels like it needs teasing out more.
And this might not be interesting to anyone but me, or relevant to the analysis of the show, but it's bouncing around in my brain and I need to write it down.
The above line (and all the talk about Kawi's present and past) made me think about Antonio Damasio's theory of the construction of the Self in his book The Feeling of What Happens:
The idea each of us constructs of ourself [sic]...is based on autobiographical memory over years of experience and is constantly subject to remodelling. (p. 224)
This remodelling occurs through the reworking of memories - so each time we remember a memory we craft it slightly different based on our accumulative life experiences and innate biases.
BUT what really made an impact on me about this is the following:
The changes which occur in the autobiographical self over an individual lifetime are not due only to the remodelling of the lived past...but also the laying down and remodelling of the anticipated future...The memories of the scenarios that we conceive as desires, wishes, goals, and obligations exert a pull on the self of each moment. No doubt they also play a part in the remodelling of the lived past, consciously and unconsciously, and in the creation of the person we conceive us to be, moment by moment. (pp. 224-225)
So how does this relate to Be My Favourite?
Many people have already talked about how Kawi is not a nice person (this is a great post by @respectthepetty). Why does Pisaeng like him? Kawi doesn't even like himself. And, at the beginning of the show, Kawi's Self - his identity - is built from his memories of the past and his immoveable desire of what he wanted and still wishes his future to look like. Kawi is miserable, stuck in a miserable life (of his own making), and unable to make any changes because his idea of what he wants his future to be is impossible.
But then he gets to go back in time, and his sense of self starts changing. It changes because he's remaking his memories in real time, and in remaking those memories he's being exposed to things which are gradually altering his desires and goals for his future.
And that's a huge shift for Kawi. It's almost like going through a break-up - in a break-up, not only do you lose the person you're with but the future life you imagined with them ceases to exist. So you lose your sense of identity. Who are you without them? - Who is Kawi when he's not pining for Pear? Who is Kawi when he gets and loses Pear? Who is Kawi when he dates Pisaeng?...
And it's no wonder everything is still a mess when Kawi jumps forward to his present - he hasn't had enough time in his changed past to process the new memories of his past, nor to honestly admit to himself (or realise, if he's not quite there yet) what he really wants for his future.
And this journey is such a beautiful one to watch. As his memories and future scenarios change, Kawi's sense of self changes - hopefully to a happier, 'better' person...and I mean 'better' in the sense of nicer to other people because he's nicer to himself (and vice versa) and more open to change, rather the rigidity of his 'older' Self stuck in his miserableness.
I think this is why I'm warming up to him, because he is changing, albeit gradually, and changing for the better. He's becoming more pliable in his outlook, choices, and acceptance of things he can't control. All of which will aid him in being able to see a different future for himself - like an upward positive spiral. (This is a great post by @lurkingshan which is sort of related).
I'd love to be able to connect all this with other people's takes (especially to the discourse around whether Kawi will stay in his past and live his 12 years again or jump forward to an altered present and 'fix' what he can there) but my brain has stopped here. HOWEVER, I welcome others to jump on and expand on this if they wish.
(also tagging @grapejuicegay since we've been shouting to each other in our dms about this show 💖)

i think that a lot of the overworld is simply gone in the aftermath. miles and miles of bedrock, exposed lava veins, hundreds of unprocessed chunks that leave veins of ore hanging unmoving in the sky
but not everything. kristin was quite clearly very familiar with the parts of c!phil's life that were the most important to him, even if her knowledge abt the server as a whole was limited ('niki! im a big fan!' vs 'is the portal near here?') - knew to guide phil's friends + family to safety before c!phil even had a moment to ask.
and phil promised he'd take care of the wolves. the wolves, the polar bears, the foxes, the cows...
so i don't think all of the overworld gets wiped away in the calamity. she's been growing her forest around phil's home for over a year, letting her magic steep in its soil. so it doesn't take much to let the foliage grow up and across, joining hands with itself and covering the arctic sky in a goddesses' silent, loving embrace.
the fungi spore and the flowers bloom - the wolves pile into their shelter together, steve curls up by the fire, the foxes lie down on phil's bed. their heart rates slow, and the noise from the outside world fades as through a dream. the arctic sleeps, and it survives.
niki's city is trickier - kristin had never wanted to impose on what was clearly a such a personal shrine to life, and all of one woman's reasons to keep living. but just like phil's presence is felt there in every block he lent, every enchantment he helped inscribe, every recipe he passed on, so too is kristin's magic felt through phil. it is not the perfect coverage of the arctic, but its something. the city will change, but it will survive.
after all, its not like nothing's happened. the fallout from the nuke will leave scars on the earth for a long, long time, and it will be longer still before the life that used to thrive on its surface will be able to breath its air once more without consequence. the arctic and the city and all of their stories will have to hibernate for a long, long time.
but one day, it will be safe to return. it's not goodbye. it's 'till we meet again.'
