⚠ MS MARVEL 106 SPOILERS ⚠
Alright…
I honestly was not expecting much of this episode but since Iman said it was good, I decided to believe it was.
And i was not disappointed. Like, the first thing we see is Kamala's family supporting her, her mom giving her a suit. Ms. Marvel's suit. I'm sorry if I'm emotional.
Nakia calls her asking if she's known something about Bruno, she says no and goes looking for him.
I liked that joke with the red light. Ngl.
Nakia, you're a hero and I love you. How you had everyone showing their id's to DC. Nice.
I also loved that disguise reference with the caps. They only needed a pair of shades and they would be unrecognizable.
Zoe joining them was something I did not expect but liked.
Wait a gOD DAMN MINUTE! Deever was told to back down. She got a call specifically to be told that. And she didn't!! She decided to fully attack kids hiding in a school. She even called the special unit!
I also did not expect Zoe going live for her followers to help, even less having those following actually helping.
I just-- I really liked those sonic weapons DC had.
I hated with all my heart that almost kiss between Kamala and Kamran. I hated that Bruno saw it, realizing he interrupted them.
Dude, when her power made it seem like her body expanded I was so excited.
And her, saving Kamran, buying him time so he could get out of there and to Kareem. Ily girl.
Also, those people running to her to create a wall between her and DC? Yes! We love to see that! Even the cops were in the front line!
And this f-ing agent was called out. Probably fired and I hope reported. I also hate her.
Bruno left this letter? inside a locker. I'm betting it is Kamala's locker and the letter says he's going to Calthec.
Kamala = Kamal = perfect = wonder = MARVEL. “Our little Ms. Marvel.” ajsñdkdñs.
That fRAME!! Just like the poster. Just like the cover. ✨ Art ✨
STOP EVERYTHING, Y'ALL!! THERE'S SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN KAMALA'S GENETICS. I THOUGHT BRUNO WOULD SAY “SOMETHING INHUMAN” BUT HE SAID “A MUTATION” AND IM SIRE I WOKE THE WHOLE BLOCK UP WOTH MY SCREAM.
I know we already had Professor Xavier in MOM, but now, in the 616 of the MCU, we have MUTANTS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.
I don't know if I'm totally okay with that post-credit? Like, I saw people saying Kate Bishop was gonna be there and I let myself believe it.
I also believed with all my heart there were gonna be some Skrulls and I was again disappointed.
But having Carol Danvers in Kamala's room, saying “Oh, no, no, no.” And bursting out of the picture was something I did not expect AT ALL. No what?
Edit: I just remembered one of Kamala's powers is polymorphism so it was not actually Carol in her room. I apologize. Xd

'almost all their films just bad' i disagree with that anon a lot. i mean just objectively, most of the mcu movies are good. i don't know what this revisionism is, but if you look at the critical and audience scores for mcu films, the VAST majority of them are very high which is hugely impressive for a movie series with SO many films and also shows. black panther, captain america, spider-man, iron man, the avengers series, wandavision, loki, they had countless hits and to pretend otherwise is just kind of ridiculous. the mcu is a true achievement and every actor and production member involved should be proud. it's fair for people to not like comic book films, but to dismiss the great content and hard work there is just silly. im excited for what's next with the mcu and dcu, there's so much good potential with a lot of characters!
No I totally agree with you Anon! I don't think ALL (or even "most") Marvel films are bad. I think that's just smthg people are saying now days just coz it's "cool" to hate on Marvel films now. 🙄 I keep saying that people these days don't think for themselves, they just go with the crowd smh.
With that said, I'd be lying if I said that I was happy with the most of the recent stuff Marvel has put out since Avengers Endgame. 👀
Aside from NWH, Wakanda Forever, and a few of the series (Wanda Vision, Loki, etc), a lot of the newer projects have been quite hit or miss and even downright disappointing. 😞
But I think that Marvel can get back on its feet again. I just think it's silly to think that a studio that dominated the film scene for nearly over a decade can continue to have that same success forever in Hollywood. I don't think fans should expect that. 🤷🏾‍♀️
Just hope for good writing and well-done films. 😊👍🏾
I also think the idea to lessen the amount of films that are coming out right now is a very wise idea.
Somehow, somewhere along the way, it seems that Marvel got caught up in just putting out as much content as fast as possible in order to move certain storylines down the line in a particular order, but they didn't stop to slow down and think about whether or not this was what the people really wanted. 🤷🏾‍♀️
I personally think it's better if they slow down, and really just focus on GOOD writing and decent plot lines. 😊

ahh, have you watched the new avatar film? i haven't, but i heard it was good. i must ask… have you watched atla? also, i've seen so many scenes from that r+j film, but i haven't watched it — i will soon now though bc of you :) also… calling yourself an aesthete is so accurate pff your blog really does give off that word "aesthete"
i haven't watched constantine either, but the description seems cool — not sure why, but it reminds me of those angel x devil fanfics 💀 10 things about you was sooo cute!! AND YESSSSSSSS OMGG I LOVE TANGLED SMMMMM and mulan is so 💞💓💕💖💘 that makes me so happy to read that you also love tangled 🥹 i haven't watched the lion king live action, but now it's added to my list! you… you also like mcu. and ghibli… wow. you are perfect. but you..YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED SPIDERVERSE??! no, this really is a crime. a sin, even. you MUST watch it one day!! also, howl is so 💘💞💓💕💖 and the whole story behind "there you are, sweetheart. i was looking all over for you" makes me so.. 💕💞💓💖 OKAY, no but seriously ghibli films are amazing :,) have you watched all the ghibli films or just some?
yes, i have watched the way of water and i really really liked it, im so happy i didn't wait thirteen years just to be disappointed!!!!!!! and im so so looking forward to the upcoming avatar films. and yes, i have also watched atla, maybe two years ago (very late to the party, but as a kid i never watched it, if i was doing zapping and happened to land on nickelodeon and they were broadcasting atla i would change channels immediately because i could NOT stand it, i don't know why but i hated it so much!) and i reallyyyyy enjoyed it, especially the third season, zuko's redemption arc is so well done and his honesty was kind of adorable. but i didn't like korra, never finished it.
im so happy you're going to watch romeo+juliet !! let me just say, don't be weirded out by the first ten minutes, i promise if you get past them the movie is good. i swear. “not sure why, but it reminds me of those angel x devil fanfics” this was so funny. i was giggling, blushing, kicking my feet in the air when i read you call me perfect, you're too nice hahaha.
AND YES, “THERE YOU ARE, SWEETHEART, I WAS LOOKING ALL OVER FOR YOU” HAS ME ON A CHOKEHOLD. i just love howl so much. i have such a crush on him. i sadly haven't watched all ghibli films, only howl's, spirited away, kiki's delivery service, grave of the fireflies (i love it but i could never watch it again) and totoro. i have to finish princess mononoke but i will probably restart it because ive had it on hold for months, ive watched random snippets of ponyo and when the wind rises and i have yet to watch marnie, arrietty, whispers of the heart, nausicaä... i realise i haven't watched that many now that im writing this (probably because 9 out of 10 times i decide to watch howl's) but im happy because there're still many left for me to enjoy!

okay ive decided that ive seen all the good posts (and some really bad takes lmao), so here's my 2 cents.
no spoilers:
the first 30ish minutes of this movie are disappointing. the only good thing that happens is meeting America
everything after that gets better and scarier and more violent
please don't take your kids to see this movie and if you do, be prepared for the nightmares
im serious, they pull very little punches this time and shit gets dark fast
this is also one of the best marvel movies imo and probably my second favourite thing they've ever produced after WandaVision (im biased bc i love Wanda but still)
this movie has some really innovative and fun scenes on top of a lot very well executed horror elements. the cinematography is gorgeous in the later acts. sadly the dialogue is often meh at best and some lines are downright cringe worthy, but the script makes up for it with a handful of pretty funny jokes at the right moments
spoilers under the cut
had a similar issue with nwh where they straight up stole the train scene from into the spiderverse, this time they just copied the demon they fight first from the Suicide Squad Film? huge one-eyed, multi-armed monster? poke its eye out with a spear? literally, it's the fucking same
America more than made up for it though, idk bout you guys but i thought she was a delight and was in love from the first second we saw her. i would die for her + her lil pride pin!! also her jacket said love is love
not much to say for the next 30 minutes tbh, they were mediocre at best and just terrible at worst. like, Wanda goes up against the full force of the sorcerers and all they do is block her and try shoot her with a cannon? marvel disease at its finest, how can make this fight that's wholly reliant on magic work like shooting guns and missiles???
i really liked this movie i swear im getting to the praise in a minute
the scene where Strange traps Wanda in that lil mirror dimension prison and the glass shatters and gets all spikey and you hear her breathing get ragged until she forced herself to calm down and reaches out to touch that one surface? yeah man that was the moment.
wanda crawling out of that gong really set the tone for the rest of this movie in hindsight
Wong was having the shittiest time out of everyone and i think he deserves a vacation and a massage
ill be honest i though the way Strange and America bonded while tripping dimensions was cute and all but not the strongest scenes? it was fine though
who was that lady who destroyed the darkhold? i was deadass more invested in her and Wong than Strange and Christine.
when Wong was telling Wanda about the original spells carved into walls i was hyping myself up to be let down but then he actually said "Mt. Wundagore" and i nearly screamed bc!! it made it into the mcu!!
now for the thing that blew this shit out the water and into my top 2 out of all the marvel stuff: meeting the 813 Illuminati
the Christine reveal ?? chef's kiss
WANDA. FUCKING. MAXIMOFF
i loved how she took control of her 838 self
never in my wildest dreams would i have imagined they actually pull through on this. Wanda not just being an actual villain but being terrifying and ruthless and deadly. "what mouth?" was the most chilling line in the entire movie and unlike many others it hit. hard.
that whole sequence is living rent free in my head. give me a "Wanda kills the Marvel Universe" movie, I'd watch the fuck out of that
they really said "men ain't shit" in that scene too, huh
Peggy's death was kinda hard to watch but also so, so awesome
Wanda limping into the room bloody and barefoot added 15 years to my life, i have never been so attracted to her ever and i have loved her since age of ultron
many thoughts on Charles Xavier that would get me anon hate but let's suffice it to say i loved that scene where she snaps his neck
the entire scene of the trio running from Wanda was peak horror film and i loved every second
okay this getting really long so here just my favourite parts from the rest of the movie:
that shot where Stephen walks up the stairs to meet the other Stephen. cinematography on point, legit the most beautiful shot i can remember from marvel ever
the Strange on Strange fight. most creative and innovative thing Marvel's done in a while, maybe ever. really liked seeing that
America going "I can't beat you. So I'll give you what you want." and Stephen then telling her "not yet" when she wants to pull Wanda out of that reality again. i can't really explain why but i really liked that ending
the third eye popping up scene was v alien-esque, nicely done
yeah so far so good. let me know what you thought, what you liked about this movie preferably, if my criticisms are invalid or just whatever you feel like as long as it's nice. have a good night

Thank you for answering my questions :)
I never thought you this was a hate blog, I know *some* Wanda and Bucky can be some of the worst with Tony hate. So I get bring protective, and I’m you and other Tony blogs provide a place for people who just love Tony and how his dynamics.
I just know that even know it can be a testy subject when the characters are talked about together, more than anything I wish we could have got heart to heart scenes with where Tony/Wanda & Tony/Bucky were able to just talk.
Also I loved your descriptions you gave with all the most important people list. :) it made me smile, but when I said kids & flesh and bots I was including everyone from Dum-E,Friday to Nebula,Peter,Harley and his RiRi in a way too)!
Speaking of RiRi, I’m excited and nervous! If I’m being honest I haven’t been the biggest fan of phase 4, I love seeing all the other characters get time to shine but sone of things see more about being being politically correct than making the fans happy.
I’m sure she will do great carrying on Tony’s legacy,Im hoping Iron Heart captures my heart! I just wish we could have seen them interact on screen so it would be more meaningful. I checked out some of their comic scenes and I enjoyed them.
People thought that a lot of Tony fans wanted Harley to be iron lad for weird reasons when really it was because we wanted to be someone who was close to Tony. And Harley deserved something else in the mcu to do, him being at the funeral was bittersweet. I keep hoping him and Peter will meet.
Oh I really love these kind of interactions where I can share my thoughts about the characters with people willing to debate in a healthy and FUN way (sometimes we forget how fun being part of a fandom can be because of all the drama) so I who thank you for your asks 😍✨
Yeah I get it, I just took the opportunity to clarify this for new followers who haven't read my initial posts about it at the top of this page. Sometimes I get asks saying bad things about ships and characters, not out of malice, just being ultra defensive about tony and I privately clarify that this kind of stuff will not be posted here. So as not to repeat it all the time and you guys start saying "what is this bitch trying to prove fgs". I just took this perfect opportunity in the ask you sent me (precisely because it was a positive debate about tony and wanda).
I'm also kind of disappointed with phase IV. Obviously tony, steve and nat are sorely missed but I really wanted to believe that this would - somehow - be alleviated with new characters and interesting possibilities with the Multiverse.
That being said I'm already so done with the Multiverse. 😭 The feeling I have is that it diminishes the achievements and sacrifices of the original line. And I could even forgive that (too) if it was more interesting (like the wonderful Everything Everywhere All at Once) but the way it's been brought into the MCU is so silly…
I don't know if I'm having MCU fatigue right now or if it's just become plain uninteresting. I haven't even seen everything they've released (and I don't intend to). To be honest, the only thing I genuinely enjoyed and have intentions of continuing to follow is MOON KNIGHT and I want to see what they have in store for Black Panther, but with reservations. I'm concerned about introducing Namor, his culture and conflicts with the surface, Riri Williams and her backstory, maybe Dr Doom, Black Panther's new arc and the aftermath of the blip and the loss of T'Challa in Wakanda ALL in one movie. It's a big margin to make everything shallow. I really hope the MCU finds itself again in these new phases. I miss getting excited about it. 😩🤧 Last time I felt was at No Way Home but purely out of nostalgia.

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness thoughts!!
okay so now that mom is on disney+, i am sharing my thoughts. i wrote this right after i saw the movie and it's literally just been sitting in my drafts.
obvious spoiler warning for the movie
overall, i didn't love it. i'm really disappointed and i think it could have been so so so cool and opened up so much potential for future storylines and it just..... didn't? but that doesn't mean there weren't good things about it!! anyways, here's my thoughts:
things i liked
wanda. my love. what a fantastic arc (up until the end). everyone complaining about her going evil for no reason clearly missed wandavision. she literally just wants her kids back and girl i get it. also how many times do we have to go over how the darkhold corrupts people for y'all to get it??
the first 30ish minutes. like everything up until america and stephen jump universes for the first time. it was perfect and fun and i love love loved it
the whole mirror/reflection sequence thing
the convo about spiderman without mentioning peter parker
the illuminati!!!!! so cool!!!! i love the fun casting!!!!
FUCKING CAPTAIN CARTER MY WIFE SPIT ON ME
the horror elements used when wanda is fighting the illuminati. the mouth disappearing? john krasinski getting unzipped into a bunch of rubber bands? very disturbing! very cool!
the ultron bots were neat
the costumes were beautiful
also the effects on wanda's hair
wong. literally obsessed w him. his lil whip??? we love our sorcerer supreme
they did a good job explaining the darkhold
"I love you in every universe"
stephen and wanda being contrasted without ever questioning whether or not wanda is the strongest avenger
wanda being the one to stop herself. no one else could
things i didn't like
so much of the dialogue was just........ bad? like stephen's speech to america at the end was really really not good and it should have been because those moments are so important, especially for young girls!!! like i really didn't like the script
also most of americas dialogue was bad which didn't even give her a fighting chance. like im not sure if i like her as an actor cause she just didnt have good material
also so much of americas screentime was her screaming. which like fair cause its scary shit but also maybe give her something more?
ALSO we literally got three seconds of americas moms before they got disappeared. what the actual fuck. marvel we've been over this.
tuning fork man???? what the hell????? why couldn't we get a female bucky barnes or yelena as black widow or like even loki being there randomly would have been fine. that is NOT the way to introduce a new character to the mcu
captain marvel and the scarlet witch should literally never fight. ever. i hated that. they are the two most powerful avengers
zombie stephen. what the fuck
also the cape made out of souls?????
wanda did not need to die to complete her arc. that was entirely unnecessary
also why wasn't wanda also looking for a universe where her brother is alive?? and vision???? i don't understand
why would you do a post credit scene with shang chi and wong only to not have shang chi appear anywhere??? like i kept waiting for him to show up and he just didn't
christine!!!!!! literally why does she always need to be part of stephen's arc??? we had an entire what if? episode about this. they can't be together in any universe. let it go. this is creepy borderline incel behaviour at this point. get over it stephen (though your dialogue was very romantic i will give you that)
the fucking mid credit scene. make these scenes important to the plot instead of random new character drop
so yeah overall i didn't love the movie but i think part of that is how high my expectations were. so i'm going to work really hard to not have expectations of movies i'm excited about going forward cause that really wrecked this experience. also i'm probably going to rewatch it just to see if i like it better the second time.

let's talk about the whitewashing of america chavez in the mcu !
so america chavez is one of the founding members of the young avengers, she's also a lesbian and afro-latina.
but before i go off, i want to say please do not send hate to the actress potraying her, xochitl gomez is just a 15 year old kid and i don't think anyone, especially a kid should have tons of hate sent towards her.
so! we know that chavez is gonna make her mcu debut in doctor strange : multiverse of maddness, we dont know what her exact role is, but since she has multidimensional powers, i can see why she makes her debut.
now here's the issue according to me.
first here's a few pictures of comic america
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and heres the actress xochitl gomez
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she's light-skinned, and her parents are of mexican descent, making her ethnicity mexican.
and im not going to lie, when i first saw the trailer, i texted a friend of mine and asked whether chavez was being potrayed by a white person (which honestly wouldnt surprise me considering well, mcu wanda but yes back to my point), i genuinely feel like if it weren't for america's jacket, we wouldn't have even known she was going to be america.
potraying racial diversity on screen is important, especially when it comes to issues like colourism, preferring lighter skinned individuals over darker skinned individuals.
an argument that i have seen going around is, "oh but america is an alien, with alien origins! so it wont really matter what she looks like".
and just,, no?? her character's origin is based off of how she's racially portrayed. she even has a couple of lines which help explain that she has faced racial discrimination due to her skin colour and ethnicity. (i do not remember the exact ones, but when i do i will link it here)
so i think we can call this another classic case of marvel's whitewashing ! (yay !! /sarc)
the thing is, america was raised in a puerto-rican family and does identify as afro-latina. so by doing so, you are completely erasing her identity.
and this is quite a harsh remark, and i am well aware that the casting directors should be blamed for this, but a part of me is also like, the actress should've looked up the character, seen how she was portrayed and realised that maybe this role wasnt meant for her. but then again, 1) i do not personally know gomez or how she ended up with this role 2) i do not know enough on the acting industry and how it works to be able to come to an educated conclusion here.
but i want to say again, and emphasize on it, i do not think sending hate towards a 15 year old is a justification of your anger, i wish nothing but luck for her in this role and im sure she'll do great, im just still a bit disappointed.
i think it would be amazing to have a dark skinned lesbian afro latina just kick ass in the movies. but im not sure as to how much i can trust marvel in terms of queer rep, especially with the shit show loki. but we can't forget the good eternals rep ! (phastos rly was good rep)
i hope they don't erase the young avengers diversity and sexuality, but considering that it's marvel, i wont have any expectations for anything honestly.
(to the comic fans who might come at me, please remember that colourism is an issue in the comics as well, wanda is a prime example, so is storm)

i'm more upset about the lack of genderfluidity than I am anything else (im genderfluid and DYING for more rep) but also iirc it was literally reported that loki would have a male love interest so that kinda sucked. But like I said I just... want the genderfluidity. And as for Loki/Sylvie they're cute but I don't like that the first romance Loki has as a bi person with another bi person is referred to as sick and twisted in the show itself it makes me sad. basically marvel step up
if by "it was reported" you mean "fake leaks said there would be a male love interest" then yes, that did happen, and it definitely is disappointing that that turned out to be false but, as much as i hate to say it (as somebody who fucking HATES Disney) it's not queerbaiting, and it isn't something we were promised and then lied about
i, as a trans person, definitely definitely want them to mention that Loki is genderfluid in the next season, and i'm very disappointed that it never really came up. i'd also love for them to confirm that Sylvie was assigned male at birth, and chose the name Sylvie specifically because she identifies more as a woman than the main Loki in the show. i think that would be really cool to explore! like, in my head, Sylvie is transfem (though still possible genderfluid? it would be REALLY cool to see a conversation about their respective genders in the next season, similar to the one they had about their sexualities in s1)
that being said, i really don't think it's biphobic that Loki's first romance is referred to as "sick and twisted" because that's obviously in reference to the fact that he's getting feelings for an alt version of himself, not because they're like, both bi. i get why people would feel like, oof ouchie ow that hurts to see, but any relationship Loki has is probably going to be some levels of fucked up because, y'know, he's fucked up. the REAL problem here is that there aren't MORE bi characters to contrast with these twisted, fucked up (but still cool) bi characters, you feel me? like, if they peppered in that Peter Parker is bi, and Thor is bi, and if they focus on Valkyrie being bi in Thor: Love and Thunder (FINGERS CROSSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!) then tbh i think Loki's relationship with Sylvie is fine. i definitely don't feel it undercuts his existence as a bi character, it's MORE biphobic that there aren't more bi characters in more... let's say traditional relationships throughout the MCU. give me bi Wanda! bi Bucky! bi Stephen fucking Strange, why not! they should canonize Star-Lord as bi (as he is in the comics) in the next Guardians, the issue here is that there isn't enough, not that Loki's rep is bad, ygm?

🔥 something abt the Loki show, anything. Like go insane if u want. I have never seen it but I used to be obsessed w Loki when I was like 14 and u r the only exposure to ANYTHING abt the show I have bc I don't follow anyone else who talks abt it. Which is rly all I need as I don't think I could survive watching it
good lord. right so basically I don't give a shit either I just have a soft spot for loki as the thor movies always make me cry (daddy issues idk) so I thought I'd watch and I've been sucked in again by a cool plot and initially well done character study.
considering I hate marvel idk how im surprised but they started off giving the fans everything they wanted with this mystery sci-fi buddy cop plot and confirmation of genderfluid, bi loki. everyone was on cloud nine with this new female loki and the fun bi chaotic siblings dynamic they had.
but then it turn out the 'genderfluid' representation was actually just this is the only ever shockingly female oki variants in the multiverse!! and therefore loki is in love with her after just meeting. and they keep flip flopping on "it's not incesteous they're completely different people!" to regularly putting in lines like "we are stronger than we think" and constantly being reminded they're the same person with the same family etc so it's just incredibly uncomfortable. I don't like it but im used to disappointment and if they're desperate to do a underdeveloped heterosexual romance as an on the nose metaphor for self love then sure whatever I guess but I wish they'd comit. they keep doing these excruciating romantic building moments but then reminding us how weird it is and holding off from any romantic confirmation it's truly painful to watch rip the bandaid off
also some people are saying it's great representation to have two genderfluid bisexuals in love with each other but that's the same old bs good omens argument where's it's like if they're completely shown as binary genders and heteronomativley portrayed then it literally doesn't matter if tptb have said "you can see them how you like uwu give us credit for nothing" ya know? plus having a bi man and a bi woman in a relationship is really cool, in theory, if the mcu has any history of representation but considering its technically the first ever 'queer relationship' in the whole mcu (I think?) and they're kinda related ? that's erm...
it's got wonderful production design though and the time travel/multiverse aspect is really cool! they've just decided to focus on this universe shattering romance though in the later episodes and it's so unececesary. could've kept them in familial platonic love and mutual respect and literally nothing about their bond or the plot would've changed.
another thing to note: there's another white boy mlm ship which I saw a mile off bc they have great chemistry, instantly care for each other and most importantly aren't related but the writers are getting upset at the fans for "taking things the wrong way" and making every connection romantic which is incredibly ironic considering they did just that but as always queer characters aren't allowed to be demonstrably queer ever it's just a bromance
there's a s2 confirmed so I'm hoping that maybe they either calm down in the self-cest thing (it's unpopular even with normal audience it seems) and we just get back to this central trio vibing through time and space as besties which would be cool. OR. I've seen a decent theory that maybe in the finale loki and sylvie (the female variant) will merge into one being as we then have an actual genderfluid loki going forward.. which id be okay with if they're insistent on making them in love (though pissed off bc she's a really cool female character and that's making her a love interest then fridging but maybe that form would revisit???)
send me a 🔥for unpopular opinion. usually not essay length

the relationship between tony and howard fucks me up a lot, especially since you don't really find out how bad it actually was unless you're down with the comics.. and im not American so i was introduced to marvel through the iron man movie, and obviously i was curious about Tony's past, and the way he gets betrayed by father figures so i dug deeper and I haven't stopped defending him since. Im so upset about how he always gets fucked over by marvel, either in the mcu or the comics
I have so many feelings about Howard Stark. Like, SO MANY. I’ve found that I always have to differentiate between when I’m talking about MCU Howard Stark and Comic Book Howard Stark because my feeling are so mixed up.
Dominic Cooper did an amazing job as Howard Stark in CATFA and in Agent Carter. Watching him as Howard Stark it was easy to see how this man would one day be the father of Tony Stark because they were similar in certain ways. Their mannerisms and certain aspects of their personalities were similar. And because Dominic Cooper made Howard so charming he was a likable character, which caused me a lot of consternation when watching Agent Carter because I knew what Howard was like as a father in the comics. I already had an opinion on Howard Stark as a character and it didn’t match what I saw on TV. I actually had a situation a couple months ago where I said I hated Howard Stark and had to distinguish that I was talking about comic!Howard because I forgot that some people don’t know about comic!Howard, they only know Dominic Cooper’s Howard and were a fan of that character. Which is understandable, Dominic Cooper was a great Howard Stark. But he was also the Howard Stark from before Tony was born, which is a different Howard Stark from after.
In the MCU they don’t really touch on it, what Howard was like as a father. We get glimpses of the relationship between Howard and Tony in Iron Man 2 and in CACW, and while they aren’t downright hostile to each other, you can sense some tension in their relationship. There are two scenes in particular that I think about a lot in regards to MCU Howard and Tony:
What is, and always will be, my greatest creation… is you. from IM2 and the scene in CACW when Tony is demonstrating the BARF technology: “You know whats about to happen. Say something now or you’ll regret it.” “I love you, dad. And I know you did the best you could.” and when the scene is over when Tony says “That’s what I wish had happened.”
It always gets to me when I think about Howard calling Tony his “greatest creation.” I don’t know whether to be angry or frustrated because it could be taken two different ways: Howard thinks of Tony as just another creation, another invention, another machine, and that’s why he gets angry or frustrated when Tony doesn’t behave or act the way Howard believes he should. That’s why Tony and Howard butt heads so much; because Howard doesn’t see Tony as his own person, he sees him as another one of his creations that should just do what Howard expects it or wants it to do. So maybe Tony wants to do his own thing, not follow in his fathers footsteps and make weapons but he wants to create, he wants to make things like JARVIS and Dum-E and the bots, technology to help humanity, not destroy it. And when Tony expresses this it goes against what Howard expects of Tony, of his creation, so he sees that creation as a failure or a disappointment, because that’s not what he created this thing to do. And because Tony is a human being and not just another thing Howard made, he picks up on those feelings and they affect him. And that makes me so mad to think about.
On a more optimistic side, it could just be that Howard (like tony tbh) has no idea how to navigate his feelings towards and his relationships with other people, so he relates them to the next best thing he can understand: his creations. An inventor is proud of his creations, he has some sort of connection to each one of them, some form of proud affection that connects him to each one. So maybe that’s just how he relates his feelings toward Tony, this strange familial affection he doesn’t understand, but understands the closest thing to it. Which is frustrating because it means he cares about Tony (in his own strange way), but can’t express it correctly, so it comes across as uncaring or indifferent, which is what Tony picks up on.
Like I said, they don’t touch on it much in the MCU because, honestly, it’s never really been too relevant to the plot. So with so little information to go on, I could see it going either way. Because either way Tony ends up thinking his father doesn’t love him or never cared, and Tony ends up being neglected as a child.
The scene in CW, I just don’t know what to think. There’s obviously some tension between Tony and Howard in that scene, but there’s some affection towards his father from Tony in his recreation of the memory as well. “I love you, dad. And I know you did the best you could.” It could be that Tony does care for his father in some way. Maybe he matured a bit, understood his father more after dealing with everything he has in his life; Stark Industries, Obadiah, Iron Man, The Avengers, Ultron, etc. Or maybe he just pretended to care because he was showing a bunch of 18-23 year olds a personal memory and he didn’t want to air his dirty laundry in front of everyone. I just don’t know. What I do know is that when Tony says “That’s what I wish had happened.” I can’t help but wonder what really did happen in that moment. Did they have a huge fight? Did he just not say anything, and the last interaction he had with his father was giving him the silent treatment? I don’t know but I dread to find out, I think about that scene ALL the time.
So I have a double understanding of Howard Stark and I struggle with it sometimes. When it comes to MCU!Howard, I believe that MCU!Howard did care about Tony in his own weird, convoluted way, he just didn’t know how to show it so there was some miscommunication between the two as a result.
On the other hand I loath comic book Howard Stark. He’s an alcoholic, physically abusive, emotionally manipulative asshole who does not deserve any type of affection from Tony. I was almost relived when I found out Tony was adopted because it meant he wasn’t related to that dickhead Howard. I have yet to meet a single comic book reader who genuinely likes Howard Stark, he’s so terrible.
But oh boy do I haaaate comic!Howard Stark, man that guy is a bag of dicks, fuck him. Telling Tony he’s not good enough? Always comparing him to Captain America and only acknowledging his mistakes and failures? Sending him to boarding school at 4? Forcing him to start drinking at nine years old?? Beating him, slapping him, punching him, tossing him around??? Fuck that, no thank you, please stay away from the precious child that is Tony Stark, thank you. I. Hate. Him.
