So this post appeared on my feed because I was dumb and said I was interested in things tagged "Severus Snape" because I forget how things work sometimes.
I gave them a long response but I think it's a banger so I've cleaned it up to share.
To preface, I'll say that I was still in school when the books were starting to come out, and so I was in school during the period the books are set. I wasn't in the UK and can't speak to specifics there, but my own.
Your question feels really disingenuous when you tag it #james potter supremacy but I am a fool and going to answer you honestly anyway.
I liked Snape the moment it was revealed in the first book that he wasn't the villain -- because it showed him as someone who gave no fucks about how others saw him. I had been violently bullied for years at that point, but was told that I needed to stop letting it hurt me or to stop acting in ways to invite the abuse. All I internalized was that it was my fault and I needed to change myself so that they'd like me. So meeting a character who just stopped giving a fuck about other people's opinions was fascinating.
The text doesn't, I think, intend for you to read Snape's behavior as incredibly abusive. A lot of his behavior to the students wouldn't have been seen as abnormal when I was in school. Unkind but within tolerance. He was a prick and the assumption with teachers like that was that A) don't take it personally B) If you can't do A then stay off their radar and count the minutes until class is over. I'm hoping that the sudden uproar about how abusive Snape is now is a sign that school culture has changed. Because you're right, it's awful, and shouldn't happen. But that's now, and not then. Then it was acceptable if not exactly encouraged behavior.
For me, Snape's teaching style would have been within normal limits and at least it wasn't false advertising. I saw popular "kind" teachers bully disabled students, throw coffee mugs, and choke slam 9 year olds. Those teachers were never punished. I preferred the hard asses who didn't pretend, but would restrain themselves to only demoralizing you with words. They never went half so far as those much beloved teachers. These were in schools that had long banned corporal punishment by teachers, by the way.
Plus, Snape's bullying is written in such a way that is so over the top and dramatic it's hard for me to believe that there's any real intent as he never follows through with most of his threats. He's amusing himself, which is fucked up, yes, but so is his situation being forced to teach children (a job he hates) by daylight and fighting a war as a spy by moonlight (a job he also hates).
When book 5 revealed his own history of being bullied the kinship I felt for him just kinda clicked. Game knew game, even if I didn't know it then.
What impressed me about Snape is that he made a terrible decision of joining the DE, he knows it, he regrets it, and most importantly he does something about it. He sabotages them and when he can't do that he tries to reduce harm as much as possible.
He joins a side lead by people who are responsible for his own traumas, who are unrepentant about their roles in it but still expect him to get over it. Snape isn't interested in pretending everything is fine with his allies when everything isn't fine and that's such a challenging and brave stance to take.
Because if I were in his shoes, my first instinct would be to swallow all my anger and stuff it in well inside me and pretend it doesn't exist so that I could be seen as agreeable and the bigger person. I know I'm not alone in that. However, that instinct has caused me so much damage that I will spend the rest of my life fighting that instinct tooth and nail.m, because what it means is that you are minimizing yourself and your safety in order to make other people comfortable.
Snape might have the right idea (but poor execution) when it comes to some people, but he falters when it comes to Lily. I was so disappointed with the reveal that Lily was his primary motivation, even if it's grown on me. He's so damned loyal to someone who wasn't even a great friend to him by the end. Lily smiles before she intercedes in SWM, which to me signaled that the whole scene was just a way for James to pull Lily's metaphorical pigtail (Snape) in their courtship and if I were the pigtail I'd be pissed too. It doesn't justify but it adds context for why he might want to hurt her then.
And Snape spends the rest of his life regretting his moments of weakness and giving his life to prevent Voldemort from winning, for a friend who failed him pretty spectacularly.
Most people don't do that -- they regret and then they try to get on with their lives. They don't want to talk about it. We're STILL finding guards from WWII concentration camps hiding out in suburbs after all. Snape doesn't choose that and that's brave as hell.
Snape's "redemption" is a hot debate, but I don't know that redemption is even his goal. He's just trying to do what's right. If he were really searching for redemption then certainly I think he'd have sought a more friendly relationship with Harry, if only on the side.
Which brings me back to how can you claim "James Potter Supremacy" when he's only seen in SWM, where he's a cruel bully to someone minding their own business (SWM takes place after the Shack per canon), and we only have the testimony of Sirius and Remus, a decade after his death, to say that he "got better" -- which meant not publicly tormenting Snape, but doing it in private. We never get to see this better version of James.
Sirius and Remus are highly motivated to put James in the best light possible to his orphaned son, which is natural, but it doesn't make it gospel truth. I think he may have become a better person with time, because that typically happens, and certainly he had the capacity for great kindness (befriending Remus) which makes his decisions to be so cruel even more painful. But he died and we never get to see any of him in canon except him being a complete asshole.
So why would you question how people can like Snape when there is so much more canonical evidence that Snape was a good person with serious faults than there is for James being anything other than a school bully who died young?

We don’t go to earth...
Chu looked at images of earth of their data-pad, staring at the magnificent cities, the majestic countryside, the beautiful blue oceans, and more.
Chu glanced over at their friend, a human named Marie. “We take our next shore-leave together.”
Marie smiled at him, “I’d like that.”
Chu managed to imitate the smile, though his face hadn’t evolved to express itself the same way. Marie said it made him look ‘constipated.’ “Maybe we could visit your home, earth?”
Marie’s smile dropped. “We don’t go to earth.”
Chu cocked their head. A gesture which usually amused Marie because it reminded her so much of a confused dog. She showed no amusement this time. He voiced his thoughts, “I know earth has this reputation as a death-world but -”
“We don’t go to earth,” Marie stated in a more serious tone. “Not even humans go back to earth. Not because it’s a death-world, although, from what I’ve heard, it totally is! You wouldn’t last a day with the climate alone. We don’t go to earth, because there are earthlings down there.”
Now Chu’s confusion was mounting, “earthlings?” he queried, “You mean ‘humans,’ don’t you?”
He’d seen enough human expressions to know a grimace when he saw one. “I’m sure that’s what they call themselves, but no one else does.” She saw his bewilderment and continued, “How many humans are on this ship? A few hundred? how many humans serve in the space-core? Millions? Maybe a billion or so? How many of them do you think list earth as their home?” She didn’t even wait for him to speculate. “None. A big, fat, zero. No human has come from earth since the last of the pioneers left, about 200 years ago.
“I was born on the Seti-Alpha colony. Ask any human on this ship and you’ll get similar answers; Seti-Alpha, Earth 2, New India, New Australia, Nova, Sherman’s Planet, Arian, Arkas, Dagon, and so on. No one is from earth anymore.”
“But why?”
She just shook her head slowly. “We left all the idiots back there.”
His head cocked again, this time in the other direction.
She continued, “It’s what I heard in school growing up. Earth used to have a population of idiots. Some believed the earth was flat, and space wasn’t real.” She noted his surprised expression. “Yeah. Some kind of twisted misinterpretation of ancient religious text. Earth was made by a creator deity, it was a flat plane, covered by a dome called a ‘firmament.’ Space, planets, stars, all that stuff, was just a lie made up by governments to trick people into not beliving in the creator deity.”
Chu’s head began to hurt as he took a second to even try and understand this point of view.
He didn’t have to speak, Marie could tell what he was thinking. “I know. It doesn’t make sense to me either.
“They were shown evidence, they said it was fake. We landed on our moon, they said it was fake. We colonised mars, they said it was fake, like actors in a studio or something.
“Some people even offered to take them into actual space, so they could see it was real. They said it would all be fake, with TV screens, CGI, and VR headsets and other dumb stuff.
“In the end, all the humans who knew space was real left the planet and went out to the colonies to start new lives. The rich at first, then the well-off, and then space travel got so cheap almost anyone could do it. Until the last of the great pioneers left earth and the only people left behind were those people who didn’t think space was real.”
Chu shook his head violently. “That is ridiculous! Where do they think all of the colonists went?!!”
Marie shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know,” she admitted, “Some big hidden city in an isolated area? Culled by the evil secret cabal that’s running the world from the shadows? Underground bases? In cities around the hidden ice wall that’s supposed to surround the flat earth? It was a few hundred years ago and I wasn’t really paying much attention in history class.
“The point is that, the real humans took to the stars and we left the idiots isolated on earth. They’ve had that place to themselves for the last two hundred years.
“That’s why we don’t go back to earth.”

Global genocide, what a beautiful choice...
In case you missed it - and a golf update seems to have knocked it off the front page - Republicans are threatening to kill millions of people in order to protect "the unborn child." No, not just pregnant women like usual, but men and children - everyone.
The US has been giving HIV/AIDS meds to people who can't afford them, internationally, for about two decades. Most of the institutions distributing these meds are Catholic. Catholics are infamously anti-abortion - to the point of allowing mothers to suffer and die, just like Republicans! This program has a requirement to spend money teaching abstinence - it was penned into law by G. W. Bush! It seems like there shouldn't be a conflict of interest between these two groups, but there is now, and there's a clock ticking down to when these people won't get the meds they need to stay alive.
I suspect our old friend "intellectual property" also has a hand in this situation. It doesn't look like we've spent any money over the last two decades on building infrastructure so these places can make their own damn meds, we just buy them premade and ship them. Actually helping these places manufacture these very expensive drugs would eat into the profits of the pharmaceutical companies that "own" them. It's much better for Gilead there if people just buy drugs and send them. We can just keep doing that forever, right? It's good PR!
Well, now we're in a position where a grandstanding, megalomaniacal political party can hold millions of orphaned children hostage while crowing that they're "saving babies". The Republican solution is that these foreigners should be "responsible" and pay for their own meds... while US companies sit on the patents and jack up the damn prices as high as the market will bear. Yeah, that'll work great.
I've already fled the States. If Democrats can't stop this from happening... You... You can't expect me to keep filling out a ballot and giving you a fig leaf of legitimacy. I found out this year that you didn't even stop stealing children at the border. You can't ask me to keep behaving like it's going to be fine and the system can heal itself if I just keep participating in it. I don't want anything to do with this. I am being dragged kicking and screaming to check a box for people who throw up their hands and refuse to help because, I dunno, maybe this time they might? And then they try to tell me this is my fault, for not being centrist enough.
I dunno what I'm gonna do. I mean, distract myself. Keep redistributing wealth by fair means and foul. And keep yelling about these things. But apart from that...?

Hey, how about that Tumblr NSFW ban? The Pornhub purge? Remember OnlyFans? This particular article was from a few months ago, but these same assholes are now going after PayPal and other processing companies directly, making it harder for creators to support themselves, regardless of legality.
This is going to hurt the livelihoods of so many people, from artists to performers and beyond, but so-called “Christian” conservatives don’t care. They’re pissed that trans and other LGBT+ folks aren’t being discriminated against as much, and that more women are daring to have pride in their bodies, so they cloak themselves in “think of the children!” rhetoric and false feminism.
Fuck that, and fuck them!
At least I can still say that here.. right?

Yesterday we attended the resident assembly and it was a total shitshow. Let me share my favourite snippets:
"I don't understand why I have to pay to repaire the water membrane on the roof when my appartment isn't on the top floor"
"We don't have to get fire safety doors to the storage units, the existing doors are metal. Metal is not flammable."
"I have no problem with the maintenance guys, they are really nice and always helpful, I actually really like them. I just don't want them to earn the living wage."
"-Even I could be board director here! -Then fucking do it! -Maybe I fucking will!"
Anyway, who wants to run away with me and found a commune?
