You're walking through the school library- the carpet muffling your footsteps and the dull drone of air-conditioning drowning out could-be whispers. It smells of something between the pleasant scent of old books and governemnt mandated sanitisation.
You pass some books; five or so textbooks all labelled 'LEARNING STATISTICS' each with different fonts and colours. As you pass by the next bookshelf you noticed they're full of similar books. No effort has been made to label the shelves beyond number codes, so all you can do is assume the mathematics section is as vast as numbers itself.
Once books finally diversify, you think you hear a whisper. If there was one, although you can't actually see them, they must have gone quiet when you approached. You consider looking for them, just to prove you aren't the only person in this entire building, but awkwardness wins and you wander away. With so many books, so many paragraphs and words, would there even be room for more than one human in here? Or would the shelves buckle from being stuffed too full of the contents of another life? Maybe these books are humans. You pass by a shelf full of psychologically books and the human condition. You bend down a little. Beyond the books was more shelves, and between the small gaps, you can see more books.
You could leave anytime. It would be wise to. But for now, you roam a little longer, wondering if another person has touched the dust-filled carpets in the past decade. And if they did, if they were doing anything more than being lost.

tmagp thoughts (this will be pure nonsense I just need to write it down)
alice is so tim coded
obviously there's a connection anyone can make to the multiple statements abt urban exploration/spelunking in tma and the redcanary forum thread.... it invites the horrors (connection to danny?)
gwen is a ✨️bouchard✨️ (implication that while its a parallel universe the same ppl still exist? supports possibility of spelunking forum thread connecting to danny somehow (not actually super sold on that but seen a lot of ppl mention it so))
colin is definitely going to succumb to the horrors :/ (either first to die OR..... this universes version of an avatar?)
CHESTER AND NORRIS!!!
I'm of the firm opinion that they're jmart BUT! but but but! I do believe they're echoes of who they were, this just so happens to be Somewhere Else.
also! yes I understand that we most likely will Not get any tma characters in any meaningful way in tmagp, however I also believe that alex and jonny couldve very easily.... not...... voiced the text to speeches....... like yeah I dont think we're getting jmart as we knew them but..... come on
also also. the text to speeches got less robot sounding the longer they were reading and it really reminded me of how ppl reading statements would slowly get invested as they were reading and emote as if it were happening to them.
sam is on the archivist (or tmagp equivalent) pipeline already yikes
the turpentine line was raw as fuck. so was the canary one obviously. don't want to beat a dead horse by talking abt that bc so many others have already said it. but! the institute is deadly stay away!!
the sound engineering is god tier I love all the bleeps and bloops
colin knows smth is Watching. inadvertently feeding the eye by being paranoid? does the eye even exist the same way it did in tma?
theres definitely smth to be said abt whether or not robert smirke did his thing the way he did in tma and if anyone in the know uses the same classification or if the oiar is the only group categorizing. the fears always kind of blurred together at certain points so maybe without the human interpretation of it being 14 distinct entities it's more of an..... amalgam?
magnus institute is in a different place which is interesting. if it was built for the same reasons (outside of just research) is there another panopticon esque structure underneath? (brings us back to if smirke was doing his thing)
very curious to see if theres gonna be a leitner books equivalent.
I deeply deeply deeply desire a michaela salesa cameo at some point. he's one of my fav side characters.
sam and gwen using classic horror characters to help him try and memorize the classification categories was very cute
another thing I'm sure everyone has talked abt already but the whole world wide WEB thing and possible jmart in the computers and omg they're in the web and the oiar is part of the web and blah blah blah u get the image.
lena is intriguing to me. my guess is she's going to be a gertrude esque character who knows at least the basics of what's really happening and is trying to put a stop to it.
I havent seen anyone talk abt like...... what IS the magnus protocol. like tma was the archives in the magnus institute. the magnus archives. self explanatory from like ep 1. what the hell is the magnus protocol. is it smth fr3-d1 will run? or the text to speeches? is it tmagp's version of a ritual? using protocol to reference the updated tech from tma? is it smth the actual organization has to run in the event of Something Happening? WHAT THE PROTOCOL WHATS IT FORRRRR
I know nothing abt the ARG shit, just to note that
okay I think that's it for now..... feel free to discuss in the notes lol

okay i have to talk about this.
TMA S5 SPOILERS AND BRAINROT BELOW THE CUT
in magnus archives, martin becomes a meshing between the eye and the lonely, or rather his domain does.
but his domain is about being alone in the sense that no one will ever remember you.
but something that is grossly underutilized for the lonely is crowds.
typically, crowds are seen as an eye thing, so many eyes watching and judging you, thats obvious.
but the loneliness found in crowds, dozens of people who dont know you, nor do they want to know you, that kind of loneliness is far more devistating than being literally alone, because when youre alone, you can still cry, you can let it out. but you cant do that in a crowd, you have to keep a facade up just in case someone notices you, even though theyll never interact with you.
martins domain was such a missed opportunity, the combination of the eye and the lonely in his domain could be argued to be more dark than eye because youre NOT being seen. but in a crowd, people are always watching, but even though theres so many people judging you, you are still truly alone.
here’s to tmagp hopefully playing off of my heavy fear of crowds more than tma did, or really more than any sort of horror story because seriously i cant be the only person like this

BIG OL WARNING OF SPOILERS FOR BOTH TMA AND TMAGP. THIS IS JUST A RAMBLING OF THOUGHTS I HAVE ON BOTH SERIES.
i remember seeing a post saying how all the entries in the magnus protocol feel like the priest from the 2 parter episodes in season one of tma,and after this weeks episode, yeah i definitely see it.
this go around feels so much more visceral, like the season 5 episodes, except not as abstract if that makes sense. like i feel like the horrors were a-step away from people. like yes the horrors were still happening but in a thematic way and through a conduit of some sort. like the leigtner books or the avatars or the nature of the fear entity. like it felt like a distinct separation from reality and the supernatural, even though they were throughly mixed.
however with Protocol, the supernatural feels more incorporated. like TMA felt like a water and oil suspension and tmagp feels like an emulsion. like milk. that change from reality and the supernatural is no longer a distinct line, but a gradual transition.
the supernatrual feels crueler this go around, with the amount of things happening to peoples bodies, ie the dudes eyeballs in the violin episode, red canary's eyes in the first episode, needles victim also having their eyes targeted, and now episode eight having the victim being bitten into and parts of him consumed(his finger). Sure TMA is no stranger to body horror and pretty horrible things happening to peoples bodies, but i feel like the extreme severity of body horror( ie the choir of the Stranger) and other horror in genral made it not as jarring to hear, since it was so outlandish that it didnt really feel like it could happen in person.
which brings me back to the priest. what made his statement so memorable, apart from the fact thats its the only 2 parter episode( if i remember right), was how multiple entities were involved and how mixed and emulsified they felt and how jarring it was to hear. Like that , and the episode where a Achilles tendon is cut with a bolt cutter, brought the body horror into real life. i could see it happeing to myself or somebody else. Which is also how i feel with TMAGP. it can be imagined more easily so it makes it more jarring to hear.
up until season 5, the fears had felt more separate and the change between reality and supernatural felt distinct. However, you could argue that even in season 5 there was separation between the fears and reality, even though the fears had become the new reality as can been seen by how there were distinct sections for specific fears.
But now, everything is emulsified, and the separation is gone. Body parts are being chomped, and gnawed, and popped. and i dont know how to feel about it. i like it to an extant but in hoping it doesnt become to much like a Saw film. i dont think the series will, given the episode of the guy in the garden or the voyeur movie goer, but it certainly has up-ticked in body related horror. Still, I cant wait to see how it all unfolds.

If you like TMA and HOTD, which Fears do you think the HOTD characters would be?
!! fun question had to think about it
broadly the targs are desolation-aligned fire and blood lets burn another woman to death in childbirth to produce our unburnt messiah etc. rhaenyra and daemon(+aemond) especially desolationpilled bc theyre both mimicking visenya the most desolation targ ever. however i dont think they actively worship the desolation in the way most cults do i think its almost a byproduct of their family imperial cult and idealisation of old valyria. viserys idealises a kind of glorious conquerer’s desolation of the past but is not cognisant of the destruction his own wellmeaning peoplepleasing is wreaking
velaryons strongly vast-aligned the wide open sea and the wide open sky, fear of majesty and the dizzying superiority of others, but as the dance goes on and they lose everything become more lonely-aligned. me and the sea with my children at the bottom and the fog and the fog and the fog
otto is eye-aligned but not in a sincere faith actually believes in the cult’s goals or ideals way but in an elias following the eye bc the insight it grants him can be used to further his own murderous scheming way. alicent is eye-aligned in a being raised by otto has made her constantly obsessively paranoid about being watched by others or a higher power and found wanting and has in response developed a sort of spiteful self-defensive watching rhaenyra’s indiscretions with her lip curled faith
larys has some eye tendencies type of guy to crank off to a four car pile up and there is something to be said for him being a bit like otto as part of his relationship w alicent. however imo he’s corruption-aligned fear of rot deformity/disease and unhealthy love relationships. hes not into the flesh hive or the collective angle but i would lean into the he controls and listens through vermin theory thats vv fun
i think the horror of the construction of harrenhal was a huge fear event it got the attention of half the entities i think the bones of harrenhal are aligned with the flesh/corruption/buried/web/slaughter and any lord who holds it never leaves without taking one with him
all knights slaughter-aligned to some extent chivalric cult and soldiers are a slaughter institution but criston is like. ridiculously insanely slaughter aligned. senseless violence and butchery especially when enmeshed in some papery shell of i didnt have a choice it was out of my hands hands bloody all the time even when they arent. lancelot did many people see me while i was mad quote
helaena is strongly end-aligned fear of death often prophets and dives much further into this after b&c thats her madness. cassandra girl also not a single person notices
i want one of the great houses to be hunt-aligned (in a combination of jocular aristocratic hunting culture and peasant fear of being a resource hunted for sport cannon fodder) or flesh-aligned (eat your young class and body horror) feeling baratheon and lannister

so phantom would you say you're past the point of no return with tma yet? is it joever as they say? could i have your detailed thoughts i like hearing detailed thoughts
also i just realized i haven't been following you woops
uhm... stares at my pile of fic ideas building up n kicks them under the rug.... uh no no I have uh no idea what you're talking about uhm.. tma???? never heard of it, dont know what that is uhm... (its joever for me)
I really am enjoying the characters, I like them a lot and the way of storytelling is SO interesting to me that I am so enamored by it. The worldbuilding is fun and it's like the exact type of horror that I eat up so much (what I like to call Evil Dimension /pos style horror where the horror is just intermingled with everyday life but for the most part it's kinda just normal tbh. Still horrifying in this case but it's a part of life for them).
The statements are honestly probably my favorite part because Imma be honest I think it's one of the best executions i've seen of the catch all be all style horror where you try to hit as much types of horror as you can to scare as large of an audience as you can. Bc everything still feels interconnected and like there's a point to it, not that they're trying to be scary just for the sake of being scary, it's giving you a reason to keep watching and to be scared. I'm also a little biased because there have been a few episodes that have genuinely scared me (like cold sweats shivering and trying not to panic kind of scared which I've never felt like that before from a media and I ATE IT UP) (though that was late at night and it was an episode that catered to my specific fears).
As a horror medium it's so interesting to me and I am so intrigued by it, not to mention the characters are silly and so compelling to me and I love all the characters so dearly. I have latched onto Jon like a chewtoy n I also really like Sasha. The short episodes are also like a goldmine for me because it's like rewarding when I finish an episode and I can actually get thru more than one in one sitting so it's really easy for me to listen to, I don't know what it is about it that makes it easier than other media that I interact with. Normally podcasts are hard for me but I've been having a pretty easy time working through it tbh and it feels a little easier for me. The mostly episodic style to a lot of the statements takes off a surprising amount of pressure for some reaosn so I'm just here enjoying the ride and the lil bits of lore.
Very fun, very enjoyable. And Jon's voice is so soothing that it makes it easier to listen to bc I like it all that much more.

relistening to tma and I just got to tma 71 - underground. goddd. the narrator is such a fascinating individual. I dont think there's any other person in tma that has the same "well. I guess this is my fate now" reaction as she does. she's on a muddy dirty ghost train for far longer than should be physically possible and her reaction upon it grinding to a halt is to try and find the driver and see what's wrong. she sees another victim of the Horror and sees the door seal shut behind her and decides "i guess im going to die. nothing to be done about it now. I'll just lie on the floor and hope it's a dream". she seems so unphazed by it. I wonder if the fears spit her back out because she's such a perplexing unflappable person. they just had no idea what to do with her. absolute legend.

Whatcha thinking about rn?
i like horror, but you know what i like more than horror? what happens after the horror. what happens to the ones who survive.
an experience like that leaves you pretty messed up, especially if the events were in some way supernatural. like what are you gonna do when a demon kills all your friends? the cops show up and find you covered in blood, surrounded by bodies and you’re gonna tell them it was a demon? a monster? a ghost? there is no way they’ll believe you. and if they don’t think it was you, you’ll probably get institutionalized for telling people what really happened.
but if you choose to lie, keep the magical business a secret, you’re left with this horrible truth rotting a hole into your mind. you can reason away the events, try to forget it, but something like that will never really fully leave you. maybe you manage to block out at least the ghost parts, but those memories, that fear, will always be lingering in your subconscious. you will always, in the back of your mind, know.
and you’re suck with this. alone. everyone else who would fully believe you is dead. anyone you tell might apprehensively listen to your story, but they can’t fully believe you. how could they? they weren’t there. they didn’t see it all. but you did. only you did. you’re alone in this truth, no one to tell, no one to talk to who would really listen.
it’s a special kind of loneliness, the isolation that comes with such a burning secret.
(tma the lonely tma the lonely???? i could talk a lot most abt how this ties in specifically with the lonely from the magnus archives)
the horrors you experienced cast a shadow over your whole life, your whole future. what’s the point of anything if there are demons and monsters and horrible evil things beyond mortal human powers? college certainly seems insignificant in the face of an eternally hungry evil.
it’s interesting to see how traces of these themes show up in media that isn’t horror as well. children’s media where the teen main character discovers another world? so often in those stories, keeping this discovery a secret from their family and the rest of the world is a major point of distress. We see them bonding with people in this new world, but when they inevitably have to return to their own dimension, of course it’s so much harder for them to connect with their peers or participate in normal activities. befriending jessica seems a lot less significant now that you’ll never be able to share with her this place that is so important to you. history class or ballet lessons dont seem so useful when you’re learning to cast spells with your new fairy friends.
in more recent media(i’m thinking of two specific cartoons that i won’t name bc spoilers), the main characters share a lot more with their family and friends, and they’re mainly very supportive and loving which i find really nice. it helps the main character feel grounded in their own world and less isolated.
anyway back to horror movies, so many of them cut off right after the “final girl” is saved, which i think is a real shame. i knowww i know the main plot is over and the after stuff isn’t really necessary but MAN is it interesting. show me the survivor going back to school and not being able to find words for what happened when someone asks. show me them debating how much to tell their family and friends. show me them trying to return to normal and ignore how everything feels hollow. show me them struggling and healing and falling apart. pls and ty.
(also like two hours ago i saw a guy with the LONGEST pair of wireless earbuds i’ve ever seen and i’m still reeling from how strange they looked)
