i was wondering, how did you get to develop your art? im currently in a process where i am trying to experiment and go beyond the need to create art that is realistic (as in "objectively like reality as it is", like I was being told by both school and family). i feel like I struggle a lot to follow my inspiration because of this, and I am also trying to learn how to draw scenes from my own ordinary life, but unfortunately I am quite impatient and frustrated with my inability to create what I wish to create + perfectionism in general makes me scared of using colour as well 😭 I really admire your art so much, both your sketches and finished pieces, and I have always wondered your own learning process throughout the years. please feel free to not reply if you feel uncomfortable cause I know it is a very personal process as well, and above all I hope you are doing well and I am sending you endless love <333

🥺🥺 this is so lovely to receive because if im completely honest there are multiple moments where i feel exactly as you've just described and despite pushing through it, a message like this is very validating that ive progressed in some way

i dont mind sharing at all. i started drawing/painting when i was 21/22 which is relatively late and i was so fearful because despite having a vision for what i wanted to create i lacked any skill that could help me bring what was in my minds eye to fruition. i was also insanely depressed and in the middle of getting my degree at uni (so felt like i had no time to pursue art, at least not to the extent i wanted to). — my plan to get better consisted of multiple things. id draw everyday. i had/have two styles i'd practice, one realism, and the other 'freestyle'? basically draw only from my head and from the rhythms that came naturally to my hand, no references. by doing that, or drawing the human figure/portraits/cars/buildings from my imagination, not only was i reinforcing what id actually learned from my study of the fundamentals, but i was learning to incorporate my own creativity into the rigid structure that sometimes comes from only drawing from reference. by doing that and drawing studies every day i began to build a library in my head of images/poses/character archetypes i could pull from which made drawing from my imagination easier, but also had the structural knowledge of forms/perspective/anatomy to make them look credible. id do this whenever i had free time, and once i left uni began practicing anywhere from 6-9 hours daily. a bit extreme but i felt like i had time to make up for since i started drawing relatively late in life. only tip there is to balance practice with making finished pieces. finished pieces will show you which fundamentals you still need to work on & how much progress you've made. they also show the completion of a thought whereas practice only gives you the tools to bring that thought to reality

just so u know, ur practice of the fundaments is not in vain. you just need to revive your own capacity to draw from your imagination/subconscious. the main thing is knowing your going to find your work horrible for a long time before it gets better. the joy has to come from the process of creating rather than the end product. by the time it gets better, your eye will also have improved, so you still wont be satisfied. thats where growth comes in. being your biggest critic is what will make you great, as long as you remember where you came from (date and keep your work so you can look back on it) and the role criticism plays. separate your skill from your self worth.

something helpful i was once told is along the lines of 'perfectionism is a lie we tell ourselves to justify our procrastination. no one is ever perfect, so the only way to gain skill is to practice. you cant grow if you dont begin. so if your really a perfectionist, your only solution is to start'

I don't recommend this book lol. It could just be me but it's frustrating to follow as he shows his gesture drawings but doesn't explain what they are or his process. I've had dA tutorials that offered me more insight into anatomy tbh. But I'm using it to practice following someone else's lines and putting together shapes in a way my brain doesn't like

Do you have any advice for people who want to start drawing or beginners who don't know how to improve? I apologize if that's a very general question but your comics have been really inspiring and I hope I can reach that level of skill someday, but it's hard to know what direction to head in sometimes. I know some artists say just draw and while that is enjoyable that repetition often seems like I'm just making the same mistakes without actually learning

Hiya! No worried at all!! Thank you so much, its always encouraging to hear that you enjoy my comics :') And don't worry about it, it may be general but its a valid question bc as much as people say to keep drawing, its hard to figure out where to start or how you're even doing when you're not sure what to look out for.

One way thats great to get started is this website : DrawABox It teaches the fundementals from box drawings and working your way up! It's also great for any intermediate artists to train control and steadiness of your hand :D

Another way is to do figure drawing! Figure drawing is slightly different from anatomy studies in which instead of taking your time drawing a body from a photo, you quickly flip through many many photos and only have 10 - 30 seconds to capture the *movement* of the figure. There is a *LOT* i could cover on this topic itself but i'd encourage you to look it up!

Observational drawing is also great! Where you go out with a pen and paper and just draw anything and everything you see. (with a mask and only if you're vaxed etc. please stay safe)

The reason some artists improve faster than others is sometimes due to how quickly they can catch on to their own mistakes and why repetition helps. Doing LOTS of observational drawings from life helps you to recognize mistakes you may potentially make in future. My lecturer compared it to building a visual library for yourself.

There's honestly a *LOT* i could talk about in terms of the artistic journey, but the most important thing I think is just. Even if you dont think something looks good, DONT scrap it. Finish it!! You are your harshest critic, so you *will* draw a lot of things you dont like, but if you throw it out you wont be able to see what mistakes you make to improve on them in future. This is something i struggle with as well.

Drawing my comics has helped me draw LOADS without having to think too hard about how good something looks, and i find myself loosening up because of the amount of repetition I'm doing as well. So find something (or someone) you like drawing, and draw them over and over and over again!

- it sucks during exams because even when you two live together youre both in different parts of your apartment

- he'd study in your bedroom and youd study in your bedroom (that you turned into an art room)

- sometimes when youre working on a project you get really into it and just lose track of time

- thats when crybaby eren jaeger walks in and says "baby ? please come to bed i miss you 🥺"

- if you say something like "no i really have to finish this tonight" he'll respect that and leave, but he'll try and stay up until you come to bed. he never stays awake that long

- if youre like "five more minutes please ?" hes like "No ❤️" and will literally just pick you up and take you to bed

- if he knows youre getting low on supplies he takes a picture of the brand and product so he doesnt forget

- and then he gets it for you as like,, a present for christmas or something idk

- one time he went into your art room to try and get pictures of your watercolours after you made a comment abt getting low on it, but he accidentally tripped (he says it was on your supplies but you KNOW he just tripped on his own fucking foot 🙄) and fell onto MORE of your supplies

- he was so upset and felt so bad he tried to salvage some of the materials 😭😭😭

- and you could still use a lot of them !! so there wasnt really that much damage at all

- except for some of your paint tubes,,, they couldnt be saved 😔💔

- you two held a mini funeral for the lost items (his idea, not yours) at a park nearby your apartment building

- one time you were doing an anatomy unit in class and you genuinely came to him asking to sketch him and his face lit up like a puppy

- srsly this man started tearing UP he felt so special and needed and helpful that you were gonna draw him for your class project 😭😭😭

- once he learns more about art and techniques and stuff (all from you ofc) hes actually really good at giving you constructive criticism

- and you appreciate it a lot

- your back and shoulders always hurt from being hunched over or sitting on a stool while you paint for so long, so hes always there to help with a massage 🤩🤚

- he really gets into it too like,, he'll start saying how maybe he should drop out and become a masseuse full time

- on halloween he asks you to do his makeup because he KNOWS youll make it look so good

- he gets so many compliments on his skull face that night omg, he gets so smug when he tells them you did it "yeah y/n did it for me 😏" "oh arent you dating them ?" "yeah im just a lucky guy 🥰"

- he likes to hold your hands and play with them, he thinks theyre so pretty and cool and thinks is so amazing that you can make such beautiful things with your hands

- he genuinely thinks youre one of the most interesting people hes ever met

- for a really big anniversary he'll paint you something 🥺

- he'll get really flustered and say "y'know youre always like, making stuff for me and drawing and doing really cool things so, i just wanted to make something for you" STOPPPP

- and it wont be that bad tbh, sister rlly took what he learned and applied it to his work

- after college when you guys have jobs or whatever, that painting is still hung up in your shared bedroom

- and if you ever have kids, you'll be sure to tell them that their father made it for you

hey! hey! why do you hate the television format??

Ah yes, thank you for reminding me

I would like to state for the record before we begin that this is my personal reasons for not enjoying the format of television and not “why television is bad'' because im sure there's many people whose reasoning for liking TV is the same as my reasons for disliking them. please dont get mad at me if you disagree lmao

I feel like the short answer could be: “I have a degree in theatre and i prefer books” 

But really i hate the fact that the story is subject to change via outside forces.

In a well written play or book, there is a beginning, middle and end. It is a complete story that has been well thought out and woven together. Every detail is important and makes sense dramaturgically. You have your characters and your plot and nothing about that changes. We’re taught in Theatre School (TM) that the playwright is the first artist, and everything goes back to the playwright’s words. The story cannot change because of outside forces and it will not change over time. Once a book has been published, it is done. And yeah in theatre, a play can be done by many people with multiple interpretations of the story but it always goes back to the playwright’s words as they are the first artist and it is about honoring those words. Yada yada. you get it.

TV is always subject to change. Actors leave because there was drama on set or because they have other projects to work on. Writers change and the tone of the show changes. Or they go to a different network and the show changes. You never know how long the show is actually going to go so it could be cancelled in the middle of an important plot they never got to wrap up or the show could extend past the original plot idea and the seasons get more and more ridiculous as they’re just trying to come up with shit to do so they can keep the show running.

Like supernatural, which went on for far too fucking long and just kept spitting out nonsense when they could have wrapped up in season five.

Like the Vampire Diaries, where the main fucking character Elena Gilbert left the show (which was ridiculous!!) or when her little brother Jeremy was just like written out of the show and then never talked about again like what the hell

Like Timeless, which got cancelled after two seasons and left so many loose ends (they had to like, beg for a movie to wrap everything up) 

Like the Magicians, which just, like, sigh. Y’all know. I don’t want to get into it. Y’all know. 

Hell, even Parks and Rec, with Ann and Chris leaving the show. If Parks and Rec had been a book Ann would have never left!!! Never!!! 

Characters get pregnant because the actors who play them get pregnant and suddenly THAT’s the plot line of the season. (Wynonna Earp, Brooklyn 99, The Office, How I Met Your Mother, Sex and The City, Bones, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Once Upon A Time, Charmed, The Vampire Diaries, Parks and Rec, Grey’s Anatomy, The X-Files, Yes I Looked Up This List To Prove My Point)

If an actor breaks their foot then the writers have to change the plot. Everything about the story is subject to change due to outside forces and that might be a selling point for some people but i do not vibe with it!! 

And also, you’re watching the story unfold over the course of time and something could change halfway through the season and they abandon the really cool plot they were working on to suddenly set up a way for them to kill off the main character of the show. (okay apparently i do want to get into it with the magicians).

Like call me a snob but i like a concise arch! Something that the show is working towards, the story that they’re telling and the thesis of the show, and the end goal they’re working towards. I just honestly don’t like the “stories wrap up in one season and will we get another? Maybe? Okay yes we will so let’s come up with a new big bad for the characters to fight who’s got ideas” or like if you get seven seasons into a show and they’re like “And here’s my long lost sister that ive literally never mentioned before but we needed something exciting for the plot so here she is!” like i hate that shit. I know my old roommate loooooved when TV shows pulled twists like that so im not saying it’s bad writing im saying I personally hate this style of writing. 

I just keep throwing in these disclaimers so no one gets pissy at me lmao 

I think what caused me to realize and put a name to these feelings was watching the Schitt’s Creek Finale. I love Schitt’s Creek because it feels like one concise story. The characters all grow and develop and have an arch and at the natural conclusion of that arch, the story wrapped up. I loved that shit. It was a game changer for me. Any other show would have kept going and the tone of the show would have been totally different and frankly im glad they wrapped it up when they did and as they did. It was a perfect ending. 

I haven’t really watched the Good Place but I’m told similar things about it. 

Avatar the Last Airbender which we can all agree is the greatest show ever written had a clear plotline throughout the whole series and a goal they were working towards even if they did have side plots, it was all building up to one endgame. And it was stellar. 

I also recently rewatched parks and rec which is one of my favorite shows of all time and i do truly love it but like the whole point of the show originally was that they were gonna build a park and there were times in the show that they just totally forgot about that goal to work on other storylines until they were like ANN’S LEAVING WE GOTTA BREAK GROUND. That’s annoying! And once parks and rec started getting really popular and making more money they were able to be like “let’s send them to england! France! DC! Scotland! San Francisco! Let’s bring in Michelle Obama and Joe Biden and John McCain and Madeleine Albright! Which like all of that was really cool and some of the best parts of the series but also just another example of how the show changed over time as they got more name recognition and money. 

Also lmao i just had the thought that it doesn't really matter what community did because the point of that show was to be batshit and they succeeded spectacularly. What a good time. Just had to add that in there. 

So yeah that’s why i hate the television format because everything is subject to change from the plot to the tone to the writing to the characters and a lot of times there isn’t a clear narrative arch as they’re just coming up with nonsense to keep the show going and i just don’t vibe with that. 

So if i hate the television format why do i still watch it, you ask? You never shut about tv shows on your blog and yet here you are declaring that you hate them. What’s up with that. Well, the answer is simple. I have major FOMO. Also lmao quite honestly i just recently came to these conclusions and put words to these feelings during the quarantine so after 23 years of being pissy at tv shows all the time i honestly probably will watch less of it. I probably wont stop completely tho. Ive already said that im not gonna watch tv shows with queer characters until the show is over and its been confirmed for me that the show treats its queer characters and viewers with respect and dignity and i stand by that. (It’s the only reason why ive started to watch black sails.) im for sure never watching another cw show again. I have literally never finished a CW show because something has happened in it halfway through that pissed me off so much i never finished the series

So that’s my opinion does anyone also feel the same way? I feel like im crazy

| Cells at Work | (9.5/10)

themes: educational about medicine

opinion: completely lovely and cute, kinda didn’t like the lack of names for the characters but it made sense anyways. It’s very educational about anatomy, medicine and biology, so if you dont like weird scientific names and explanations of medicine, you wont like it 

| Kakegurui | (10/10)

themes: betting and girls lol 

opinion: one of my favorites so far, all characters are so unique and even if they aren’t supposed to be good guys, you end up loving them. Plot can get kinda confusing at parts but wont last long. Also u must like at least games with bets like a casino cause it’s the base of the show. Know that it contains some weird scenes that sort of sexualizes the girls but are we surprised by now? 

| Beastars | (10/10)

themes: animals and else, look at your own risk 

opinion: this one blew my mind i swear, the animation is perfect. It felt like a movie, the dialogues were perfect, characters were relatable, i felt like sometimes it was a reference to the real world with discrimination and so, like a japanese sort of graphic zootopia lol but it’s a must

themes: movie - cyberfuturistic 

opinion: you gotta love cybergs and blood and weird monsters to like this one. It’s a movie tho, and the end got me sort of confused. Lots of sexualizing female characters but nothing we haven’t seen before. All characters are endearing and makes u get attached fast 

| Devilman Crybaby | (8/10)

themes: graphic af and supernatural kinda 

opinion: ok i have mixed feelings about this one, i liked and cried the ending lol, plot is lowkey messy but i think it’s worth a shot. Know that it contains graphic scenes with s*x, drugs, violence and adult language. 

| A Silent Voice | (100/10)

themes: movie - drama for sure 

opinion: hands down one of the best movies, no cap. Carries a strong message, all the characters teach you something for life, you will cry a lot, let me alert you. I cried like six times but i fucking loved this movie with my whole heart, is one of my favorite ones 

| Japan Sinks | (9/10)

themes: drama - natural disasters

opinion: ok this one was good, maybe could be better tbh, many sad parts, also dialogues were weird to me like a bit senseless and there was a weird part of the story but overall it’s entertaining! 

| Altered Carbon: Resleeved | (9.5/10)

themes: movie - sci fi cyberpunk kinda +18

opinion: there are a bunch of graphic things like violence and all but overall i really loved this movie, the animation was on point, it felt like a video game tbh maybe there’s a bit of sexualization of women but she’s still badass and i really liked her 

| B: The Beginning | (7/10)

themes: half fantasy half crime

opinion: i’m not sure how i feel about this one, it was veeery entertaining, had funny things and interesting characters, only the plot felt a bit confusing at some parts but generally the anime was very good, good ending as well, and keith flick owns my heart and soul so yeah lol 

| The Promised Neverland | (1000/10)

themes: kinda horror, more like psychological suspense)

opinion: one of the best animes i’ve watched so far, i don’t even know where to start, just read this because it says it all 

| Shiki Oriori | (9/10)

themes: movie - wholesome drama ig

opinion: it’s has the whole ghibli vibe, it’s divided in three stories with similar meanings, it’s about love and life in general, don’t expect a big plot, it makes you feel things tho, i enjoyed it a lot 

| Ajin | (8/10)

themes: supernatural, action

opinion: ok i finally finished it and let me say many things. first, it was frustrating many times and kinda slow too, that’s why it took me a lot to finish it. but the plot is SO good, the characters are iconic (i’m in love with mr. tosaki) and the animation is so different to other kinds of anime. it’s hard to recommend tbh, it has its pros and cons and a lot of violence, but its good overall

themes: movie - sci fi cyberpunk

opinion: i personally loved this movie because i enjoy these cyberpunk stories, though the plot was sort of confusing at first. the characters are not so deep and it’s truly enjoyable. overall it was good tho slow at first.

themes: PURE SADNESS, loads of mentions of death

opinion: destroyed my little heart. it was extraordinary, a bit dense at times but overall it really just kills you. it’s very well done and it’s impossible to finish it without crying at least once.

| Hwarang | (10000/10)

themes: historical 

best ost: the divine move

opinion: wouldn’t recommend it as a first kdrama to watch since it is basically about ancient korea but if you like shinee and bts, i’m sure you will like to see minho and taehyung together, also the cast is perfect and the bromances of the show are everything 

| Strong Girl Bong Soon | (9.5/10)

themes: rom com mostly with superpowers

opinion: extremely adorable, bo young and hyung sik have such a good chemistry, i didn’t like much the funny parts but it’s bearable i guess 

| The K2 | (100000000/10 no lying)

themes: action with good villain

best ost: love you

opinion: this is my real must watch, this drama is beyond amazing, the acting is on point, the plot twists so much that i love it, action parts are kinda choreographed obvs but it’s tolerable, ji chang wook’s acting is on point btw 

| Suspicious Partner | (10/10)

themes: a bit of everything but mostly rom com

best ost: 101 reasons why i like you

opinion: gosh i love this cast so much, ji wook and bong hee’s relationship is everything, u can tell the actors also have amazing chemistry. Funny parts were well done and not annoying, and the plot twists are so good you can’t be mad, i only hated how long it was 

| The Bros | (9/10)

themes: movie - comedy mostly

opinion: it’s actually a mix of everything lmao i cried and laughed and was lowkey confused but it’s such a rollercoaster i really loved it also ma dong seok is the best actor korea has, no cap 

| Derailed | (8/10)

themes: movie - suspense and action

opinion: starring shinee’s minho, the plot is a bit confusing at first, but it is very entertaining, with adult language and maybe violent scenes but honestly it’s very good and underrated 

| Argon | (8.5/10)

themes: journalism - drama 

opinion: it’s from netlix, super short (8 eps) and is so damn good, maybe the end left me a bit underwhelmed but throughout the show it was all so damn good, i like for once that the romance wasn’t the principal issue, it’s all focused on the corruption inside the media and the press, i really recommend it 

| Psychokinesis | (9/10)

themes: movie - superheroe-ish comedy

opinion: it’s quite funny tbh, the whole superpowers thing was carried quite well (still a little bit too much sometimes) and the characters are loveable 

| Don’t Cry Mommy | (9/10)

themes: movie - drama

opinion: honest to god this was a very good movie, amazing acting and very touching story. It’s veeery sad tho, trigger warning though there are scenes about rape, i recommend searching up the plot before watching but overall the movie is very well done, i personally don’t agree with the end but i guess it’s just my way of seeing it all

themes: musical with magic, like a korean greatest showman but mixed up

best ost: a curse of asphalt

opinion: it’s delightful to watch, the cinematography is extraordinary and i can’t even begin telling you about the music. musicals can be done terribly wrong but this is not the case, no. it was done in such a elegant and beautiful way that it’s not even dull. ji chang wook steals the spotlight in my opinion, he knows how to make you feel things and his voice oh god. i’m his biggest fan btw

opinion: not my favorite one, since i’m not a fan of shows or movies located on 1905 but the characters are memorable, the place of women is well shown (for the time right?), tho some things are lowkey questionable as well

themes: pretty self explanatory, also +18) 

opinion: it has so much violence and s*x scenes tbh but the animations being different in each episode it’s so cool and it only lasts 10 minutes each episode, tho i warn you about this one is super weird

themes: thriller/suspense i guess

opinion: i’m so sad it only lasts 2 seasons, the show is amazing and the suspense is carried on very well

opinion: if you’re jewish, is a must watch and if you’re not jewish, and even bigger must watch. It teaches so much about the role of women in the orthodox jewish communities, and it’s based on real events

opinion: this show is short but so good, each story teaches that actions have consequences and that karma arrives at some moment, it may be hard to endure some parts but it’s totally worth it.

opinion: it’s from 2012 i believe but the story is super entertaining, many plot twists, very good cast and i may say very good soundtrack too lol 

| Everything Sucks! | (10000/10)

opinion: just one word: A-FUCKING-MAZING!. This show was the best seriously, i couldn’t care less about the end, the whole show had it all: lgbtq+ representation (and very well done), biracial couples, healthy relationships between parents and children, beautiful friendships, character development very well done as well, it takes place on the fucking 90s which makes it even better. Please watch this one, you’re gonna love it

opinion: ok this show had my heart, i lived for these girls and all, but the end really fucked me up, i didn’t like it one bit (my opinion tho), but i still recommend it, also Óscar and Marga own me

opinion: it’s a very short film starring rihanna and childish gambino, it’s so fucking good i recommend it especially for the music and the good messages it has

This is just the lower shelf. I’ve decided to keep my Eragon coloring book pages, Peace and Sirenity binder and folder, and all my paints, pencils, art stuff, etc down here.

Main shelf!

Eragon and Eldest, OFC. I’ve not read Prisoner B-3087 yet, I just got it yesterday. Next is Escape from Camp 14, a biography from a defector from NK who grew up in the ‘three generation’ secret prison camps (this isn’t a long past thing, it’s relatively recent). After that is another new book from yesterday, How to Build a Dinosaur because who wouldn’t want that book? Also I’m lacking paleo and geo books. My Side of the Mountain is always worth some rereading imo, it’s a good book. 

Now on to the stranger stuff. The Woman with a Worm in Her Head is a book about some of the more whacky infectious disease and parasites and stories about them. The Hot Zone, while completely exaggerating Ebola a disgusting amount, did boost my interest in infectious disease to a level that led me to enrolling as a microbio student when I first started uni before I switched to Geology. 

I’d admit, I bought Pandemic ages ago. It was written in the years following the first SARS outbreak, when everyone was terrified of a combination of another SARS outbreak (oh look what we have now!) and post-9/11 bioterrorism fears. I’ve never really been able to finish it, due to being disgusted by the stereotyping at some points, but I figure i should choke through it due to the current situation.

Next is Spillover. 10/10, ALWAYS recommend Spillover, read it (or at least the first two sections or so) BEFORE you read The Hot Zone. It’s gotten more press due to the current pandemic which is good but means it’s kinda hard to find now.

The Desserts Cookbook. Mama Cat gave this to me. 

What if? is hillarous and super informative. If it helps, the front is a picture of a TRex being lowered into a Sarlacc pit. A guy answers all the crazy questions like ‘what if you collected ALL the elements of the periodic table one by one and placed them in a periodic table?’ (the answer is lots of terrible things) or ‘what if you threw a baseball at the speed of light?’ etc etc. I really recommend this one.

Jurassic Park and The Lost World. Because I’m a motherfluffin’ paleontology student, ofc I needed to read them! I’m actually in the middle of The Lost World right now but had to put it on hold.

The Ends of the World. Extinction events. They’re like crack to me.

Heheheh. Calvin and Hobbs: Yukon Ho! You gotta have some of that in a new place.

This is the reference shelf. The two books on the far left are Dr Halsey’s ‘journal’ that came with the limited/extra special edition of Halo Reach. I actually bought it off ebay for a ridiculous amount of money that I wont specify, but it was worth it for all the cool notes on SPARTAN-II augmentations (which I frequently use as baseline reference for Modern Inheritance Cycle elves). The second book is The Book of Runes. Because I’ve always had it with me and it always ends up being useful somehow. 

Starting from the bottom of the left stack we haaaaave:

A Guide to Nuclear Power Technology: A Resource for Decision Making. Ironically published two years before the Chernobyl disaster. I’ve read the first three chapters. Having a general understanding is a personal choice. 

The A to Z of INfectious Diseases. I mentioned I was going into infectious disease before, right? I’ve read that from front to back and wrote some notes on the 2014 Ebola epidemic. I should probably write an entry on Covid at some point too. 

Surviving the Wilds of Florida. Quick and handy reference!

That last one is a book about the crafts of Florida’s indigenous peoples. Nice little book. 

Second stack, starting from the bottom again!

Gray’s Anatomy. And no, it’s not the compilation of all episode transcripts, that’s the real, dense deal right there. You gotta know what you could be breaking if you’re writing torture and injuries in fanfiction....

Genki 1 and 2. Still trying to keep up with my summer studies. 

A Reader’s Guide to R.A. Salvatore’s The Legend of Drizzt. This was given to me by a woman who tutored/babysat me in middle school. She introduced me to LoD, and thus my first introduction to the world of DnD (though i didn’t realize it at the time), and is why I always chose Undercommon as an extra language in DnD. Fantastic series, beautiful art. 

That turned book is actually a custom printed book someone made of me through middle and high school and gave as a gift at graduation. 

Woop Woop, Eragon coloring book!!

A Practical Guide to Dragons. I think this might be tied in to one of the older DnD editions. It’s still a fun book with lots of different dragons in shapes, sizes and colors.

i just wanted to hop by and tell you i love your stories, "How ruthless are the gentle" in particular. Are you ever going to continue any of your older ones, like "Tokens of life"? I really loved that one too!

thank you so much! im really glad you’re having fun with ‘how ruthless are the gentle’. its been a ride, for sure lol. 

as for your second question, and honest answer would be ‘i dont know’. I loved writing ‘Tokens of life’ but the idea that is obsessing me right now is the one i had when i started ‘anatomy of a second language’[which i am going to rename ‘anatomy of a hidden language’ or something else altogether, but still something that manages to telegraph what i want to do with it: a study in the hidden/silent  language of intimacy and closeness - the si]. it just wont leave me be!!!  i might   delete the original posted one tho, because im not going to be editing so much as wholly rewriting it, but the concept will be the same: the Starks meeting up again in Winterfell, following the books for a part (as much as i can anyway), and wholly imagination for another. With Sansa and the Vale, Jon and the Freefolk, Rickon and the Manderlys and Arya in the Riverlands. And Dany in the mix too! 

I just really want to explore this idea of Jon being back from the dead and what that means, and a different dynamic between him and Sansa where she kind of wrenches him back to the world of the living by sheer force of loving him (and him having to meet that in the middle with his own will to live, for himself as well as her because one cannot survive only by being loved. Love can help you ut not save you).  I’m fascinated by the idea of a violent world with a soft spot in the middle, between these two people. And I want to write all the Starks as a family, finding each other again and being happier than they have been in a decade even as the world is ending around them, because they are alive and together.  

so yeah, most probably that one is the one i will start writing immediately after i finish ‘how ruthless are the gentle’. 

then there’s the whole ‘essos au’ which i haven’t developed a lot and which i will probably make into a one shot or a short story. Based around the idea that Jon grew up in Essos and is with Dany while she is in Mereen (and in this au maybe Rhaelle and Viserys are still alive, and Arthur Dayne is too), and Sansa escapes King’s Landing with Tyrion rather than with Littlefinger, and ends up in Daenerys’ court. And Sansa and Jon end up having the whole ‘henry tudor x elisabeth of york’ vibe to them, where they have a union of convenience through which Sansa would take back the North - that grows into love in time.

time’s arrow {Roger Taylor}

Anon asked: Hi, I love your roger/ben imagines so much and was wondering if you could do some angst with Roger x female, maybe they are good friends and she sees him with another. Whatever you would like! Thank you x :)

A/N: 2727 words. A story told through Seasons. I took a little bit of liberties with the prompt, if that’s okay? This hit me like a lightning bolt and I had to write it. Angst with a happy ending. (I’m just trying to show I’ve got versatility in writing, okay?)

Warnings: Implied sex.

You meet him in Spring, before it all begins, he sits up the back of your Intro to Head and Neck Anatomy lectures, the only class with open spots available by the time you were looking for a science credit. You find out he’s in a band three weeks into the first class, finally going to the local bar, sick of cramming your brain full of information you’re not even sure is necessary for your degree. He grins at you and wow okay, you didn’t even think he’d recognise you.

“You’re in, um,” he’s leaning against the bar next to you in this dimly lit pub, grabbing a drink between sets. Faltering for a moment, his eyes travel down before you clear your throat, angry at yourself for blushing, but his smile widens, “my class.” He finishes, taking a sip of his beer. You agree, rolling your eyes at him, but even that seems to amuse him. He asks your name. The guitarist is calling him over, setting up for the next set, but you tell him before he leaves. Something tightens in your chest when, later that night, he catches your eyes mid-song, his look of intense focus shifting for a moment as he grins, giving you a wink.

He takes to sitting next to you in lectures, chewing the end of his pencil and taking occasional notes in a falling apart notebook that looks as though he uses it for every class. You catch lyrics in the margins and at the bottom of some pages, but he’s cagey about that in a strange way, just says you’ll have to come to a gig to find out what they’re about. So you do.

Gigs become a regular for you, and you start to become friends with the girls who frequent the shows, often hosting predrinks in your dorm room for Mary and her friends on a Friday night. You learn on one of those nights that at least two of the girls have hooked up with him, and there’s a strange, sinking sensation in your chest. You’re not sad, or at least, you tell yourself you shouldn’t be. You and Roger are just friends, it’s not like there’s anything going on there, sure, sometimes after a really good show he’ll give you a pash, but it’s- that’s just him. 

It’s not like you’ve never thought about it, but you also know his reputation, and that it’ll do more harm than good to get involved with that. He’s the one mistake you don’t think you want to make.

It’s Summer, a few years later, when they trade in the van to get money to hire the recording studio. Roger had really loved that van, and he lay on your sofa for a solid hour grumbling about it, about how Freddie had some kind of nerve. You roll your eyes at him, call him a drama queen, which he takes offence to, but moves obligingly when you sit down, letting him rest his head in your lap.

When you raise the point that it might be worth it, he looks frankly aghast, griping about how he has to catch lifts everywhere now. He calms down somewhat when you start carding your fingers through his hair, though he still pouts.

“If it comes to it, I’ll buy you a car, you baby.” You snort, despite the fact that you’re currently barely making a living wage on some retail job, it’s not where you’d thought you’d be after university, but sometimes that’s just how it is. He looks up at you, and when you look down at him, he’s looking very intense. Perhaps he might say something poignant about your offer, you think, but instead he reaches up and pokes your nose.

“I can see up your nostrils.” He tells you, and you smack his hand away, scowling. You stand abruptly, ignoring his complaints, smoothing your pants out against your thighs.

“Come on,” you offer your hand, which he regards with both confusion and a bit of disdain, “you can’t mope around my apartment and complain about the band again. We’re going out.” That gets his interest.

You’ve been to bars with him before, and usually you go home alone while he gets the pick of the prettiest girls of the night, or he decides to wingman you, which hurts your heart a little, but you won’t decline. You were attractive in your own right, you won’t deny that, you didn’t technically need his help, but a selfish part of you likes the way the attention to you, even if it’s to help you get with other people.

Tonight is different, tonight he doesn’t leave your side, he slings an arm around you as the two of you stand by the bar watching the truly mediocre band they had on that night. 

“You know why they aren’t recording an album?” You ask as the set ends.

“Because they didn’t sell their van?” Roger mused, vaguely bitter, but not melancholy as he swirled the last of his drink in his free hand.

“No, it’s because they’re terrible.” Turning, you smile at your own blunt remark, and when he looks back at you, he’s grinning with a little disbelief. There’s very little space between the two of you, but that doesn’t make your heart race anymore, he’s your best friend, close contact was part of the bargain. But he kissed you, quickly, without warning, and when he pulls back, he turns away to order another drink like nothing had happened.

Your mind is spiralling, this isn’t post-gig excitement, this wasn’t something you were expecting. The selfish creature in your chest that you tried to deny for so long was crowing with victory. Taking a quick look around the bar, you don’t recognise anyone, though there are a few girls who look like they’d be his type- but his hand is moving to wrap around your waist as he turns back.

“What was that?” Voice quiet, you take his drink and have a sip of it yourself, the movement done from muscle memory alone. He raises his eyebrows at you, not regarding the drink, that was a usual occurrence, but at the question. He doesn’t seem to know how to answer, baffled at the question. Dropping you gaze, you take a sip of your own drink. “Why me? Why tonight?” You asked. Looking incredulous, he stepped back, looking you over.

“Have you seen yourself tonight, love? Couldn’t help myself.” You’ve heard him talk like this before, to other girls, not as blunt, but with you he can get away with it. The creature in your chest is elated, and you find yourself smiling, actually blushing. He moves closer once more, his arm around you, voice low as he spoke into your ear. “Trust me, you look very fit tonight, any man would be lucky to have a crack at you.” Heart in your throat, you hope you’re reading the situation right, at the same time ignoring the part of you that knew this was a bad idea.

“Even you?” You turned to face him, watching the way his smile shifted to a smirk, and he pulled you a little closer.

“You know I’m always feeling lucky.” 

You kiss him, feeling your blood thumping in your veins, selfish and excited in equal measure, but with his hands on you, you can’t find the focus to care about the former. 

Once the bad starts up again, Roger pulls away, making a face at them, asking if you wanted to get out of there. You do, and the two of you are elated on the quick walk back to his apartment, stopping only when he pressed you up against the wall of an closed shop to suck a hickey into the skin of your neck. You catch sight of it in his bedroom mirror, but he’s pulling off your jacket and you have better things to worry about.

It’s not weird, like you thought it would be, when you wake the next morning and he’s curled up, fast asleep with his back to you, but your chest aches just a little. He avoids eye contact over breakfast, though you chat like normal. The gripes about his van have died down, though he makes an offhand comment about things are changing that you read enough into to realise what had happened.

“You’ll always have me, Rog.” You reach across the table to take his hand, and he finally looks you in the eye, he looks so relieved, not that he’d ever say it. Afraid of losing another thing he cared about, he had panicked last night and tried to keep you close in the only way he knew how. He certainly loved you, but not in the way you wanted him to. Giving his hand a gentle squeeze, you give him a smile that doesn’t reach your eyes. It’s not his fault.

Bohemian Rhapsody airs in Autumn, you’re regional manager now, and you’re sitting in your office when you hear for the first time; you almost scream when the first harmony comes in after the radio host introduces the song.

“You’re a star, Rog!” You gush over the phone on your break, unable to wait until that night when the band was having a celebratory get-together to talk to him.

“Of course, I am, you think I sing that high to be paid in peanuts?” You can hear the smile in his words without even seeing him, and being able to hear his voice warms your heart.

“That was you?” You laugh, the ‘Galileo's playing back in your head, and you try to picture him singing it, which only made you laugh harder.

“Oi,” he bristled, indignant at your laughter, “I’m the only one with the range to execute Freddie’s vision.” You could see him in your mind now, proud and stubborn, standing tall to defend the decision.

“I’m proud of you.” Suddenly sincere, you find your smile turning to something more genuine as you think back on far he’s come.

“Thank you.” His own voice has become less animated, more sincere, though you can still hear him smiling.

“Love you, Rog.” You tell him, just as you always did when you parted ways.

“I’ll see you tonight.”

He’s grinning, draped with casual confidence in an armchair in Freddie’s living room when you arrive, and you feel like you’ve been taken back five years, the casual enthusiasm he’s exerting. Smile brightening, he stands when he sees you, striding across the room to enfold you in a hug.

“Good to see you!” He practically beams at you, holding your shoulders as he looks over you, as if assessing you, seeing if anything has changed.

“Of course, you’ve been holed up for weeks, I wouldn’t miss this for the world!” Though he’s in front of you, you’re words address the room as a whole, and when he steps back, Brian moves in to hug you as well, asking how you’ve been.

The boys are your friends, all of them, you’ve been around for most of their big band moments, and it eases something in your chest to be here for this one too. But then the ease sharply tightens as a woman you’ve never seen before sits on the arm of Roger’s chair, and he rests a hand on her thigh, smiling up at her.

Mary follows your gaze, and her smile is sad as she pulls you down to sit beside her, asking you about your thoughts on the single. You answer, though your heart’s not in it, and the selfish creature in your chest rears it’s ugly head after such a long slumber. 

The monster has shifted, changed and grown, it hadn’t cared about him running around with any pretty girl he could find for the past few years, but this was different. Roger had made it clear that he was far from sacred, but this was the band, this was Freddie’s home, this was the place of some of your happiest memories; this was yours. 

You stay well into the early hours of the following morning, despite the interloper, but Roger still stopped you at the door.

“I’m really glad you could make it, I feel like I haven’t seen you in ages.” He’s smiling at you, but you don’t smile back. It’s been a long night of being kind and pretending that you’re heart didn’t hurt.

“Well, you’ve very busy.” You shrug, punctuating it with a yawn. His expression turns confused, and you open the door.

“Y/N.” He tried to get your attention, but you left, throwing a goodbye over your shoulder to him. “Love you.” He calls through the door, but you stay quiet, refuse to say it back, just keep walking. You’re too tired to be upset, but maybe you’ll get there tomorrow.

Things change, and you’ve grown to accept that, but sometimes old aches don’t heal like they should. Or at all.

“I’m getting married.” He calls you at the end of Winter.

“Oh.”

“Oh?” 

Your relationship’s been on the mend in the years since the Bohemian Rhapsody launch night. You two smile and laugh like you had when you were younger, and you’ve learned to listen to his exploits and his gripes about women, offering your own about your partners, though they’re few and far between. He’s still your best friend, and you learn to act like it. 

“Congratulations.” Your voice is flat. It had been a shock, you’d heard about his latest on-again off-again girlfriend, and had even offered advice in certain situations, actual advice, no malice at all.

“Thanks.” He doesn’t seem to know where to go from here, and silence stretches out between the two of you.

“I should go.” You finally murmur.

“What? Why?” He spluttered, and you sighed deeply.

“Was there something else you wanted to talk about?” You asked, closing your eyes and leaning your forehead against the wall.

“I- no, but I want you to be there.” He paused. “And I wanted to be the one to tell you.” Clenching your jaw, you make a snap decision.

“I can’t-”

“Why not?” He actually sounded angry, which was perhaps warranted, though your next words shut him up.

“Because it hurts, Roger.” After a beat, your voice is quiet. “Because I love you.” Taking a breath, you let yourself relax. “I want you to be happy, but I can’t watch you marry someone else.” There’s silence for a very long moment, but you hang up before he can respond. You take the phone off the hook. You need to be alone, just for now.

“After everything, you still-?” It’s the first day of Spring, and he’s on your doorstep, seemingly unable to say the word love. You’re wearing your pyjamas and he looks like he’s just walked out of a Rolling Stone cover shoot, though he just sort of looks like that now, you supposed.

“Don’t worry about it.” You try not to betray how much his visit shocked you, or the way his very presence after your recent conversation hurt you.

“You’re my best friend! Of course I’m gonna worry about it!” He threw his hands up in the air, exasperated. Sighing deeply, he stepped forward. “I thought I fucked everything up when we hooked up, I’m sorry, I panicked.” He was looking at his fidgeting hands, rather than your surprised expression. “And then... I thought I fucked it up again when I chose the band over you.”

“You never-” You tried to protest, but he smiled self-deprecatingly.

“No, I did. I loved you, and I thought that would get in the way of the band.” Clenching his jaw, he looked up and you could see the regret in his eyes. “It was easier to fuck around that tell you I love you.” Your breath stopped in your throat as he finally walked closer. “And I thought after everything, that you deserved better; you know what I’m like, why would you-?” But you cut him off with a kiss.

“You’ll always have me.” You murmured, finally letting yourself smile. Nothing about it felt selfish, in fact, it felt as though the sun was finally shining on you, warming you from the inside out.

“I know,” he agreed quietly, wrapping you up in a hug.
