Why are the StriLondes treated more like a family than the Egbert-Harleys?: My thoughts

So, I've noticed that a lot of the time, despite them both being ectobiological families, in fandom and to some extent canon the StriLondes are more focused on being a family than the Egbert-Harleys. It's very easy to boil that down to the fact that StriLondes are just...more popular than the Egbert-Harleys, so they have more content in general focused on them, including family-based content. And you'd be right! That most certainly is a factor! However it's more than just that.

When you get down to it, the Egbert-Harley's all had very positive parental figures in their lives. John with his dad, Jade with Bec and, to an extent, her stuffed grandfather, Jane with her dad, and Jake with his grandma up until her death.

With the StriLondes, none of them had that. Dirk and Roxy had people they admired and thought of as positive parental figures, sure, but those figures were never properly in their lives. Dave's bro is around but he serves as a negative parental figure in his abuse to Dave. Rose's mom is around and does care for her daughter, but her alcoholism and Rose's way of interpreting certain actions have tilted their relationship into a negative one.

The Egbert-Harley's have experienced positive parental influence, no matter how short lived it was (*cough* Jake *cough*). The StriLondes have not experienced this.

It's why when Dave meets Roxy he wants to call her mom. He wants that positive parental figure like hes seen others have. It's why, despite everything, he and Dirk sit down on that roof and talk over everything.

It's why when Rose and Roxy meet they both fumble over calling each other mom and figuring out what they are to each other. Rose wants to make things right with her mom, even if it's not the version she knew. Roxy wants some semblance of the mom she never had.

When the Egbert-Harley's interact, sure, it's sweet, they have some nice moments. But none of them have that distinct need for a parental figure like the StriLondes do.

Jake and Jade are excited to meet a version of the people they lost so young, but they don't have a particular desire to serve as each other's grandchildren. They're fine if their relationship falls more into friendship than family.

John and Jane are excited to meet each other, it's cool to meet a version of a dead respected member of your family! But John and Jane never knew their grandparents and they didn't grow up admiring them the way Dirk and Roxy looked up to their versions of Dave and Rose.

The StriLondes are more into the whole family thing, using familiar terms and these types of dynamics seeping into their conversations. The Egbert-Harleys are okay wherever their dynamic falls, they're just happy to know each other.

This isn't to say the Egbert-Harleys don't call each other familial terms ever, because they do, but it's not in the same way the StriLondes do it. The Egbert-Harleys call each other familial terms in a "Oh hey you're my [x]! That's so cool! I'm glad I get to meet you!" way rather than a "Holy shit that's our mom holy shit Rose that's our mom that's our fucking mom" way.

TLDR: The StriLondes crave positive parental figures because of their complete lack of them whereas the Egbert-Harleys already had those positive parental figures at one point or another.

having dinner with him, underneath the dimmed light. the noodles you both made together in your kitchen is forgotten to the side as he lowers himself to look at you. the city’s glow could never outshine the sparkle in his crimson eyes, looking into yours in desperation.

your breath hitches, and kazuha's skin shivers.

kazuha softly laughs, and your own skin feels as if it will break underneath his. you only pray that he doesn't notice how you shake at his touch.

but as observant as he is, he knows how he consumes your mind, as you do his.

he slides his hand underneath your jaw, his fingers stroking your skin. he tilts your head to directly look at him.

when you do look at him directly, you barely see his eyes as it is half-lidded, his crimson eyes focused on where his thumb lies.

"you already know what i want, kazuha."

he grins and lean even closer.

"i need a direct answer, my moon."

his moon. your face burns and not even the moonlight could save you from how he whispers about you with so much love and desperation.

with all the words you try to muster, you give him what he asks for.

"yes, just please-"

your voice is muffled as he moves his thumb to your chin and finally closes the distances. your eyes close, and as kazuha kisses you senseless, you swear you see stars in the back of this mind. his name flickers through your mind, and you can't help but lose your self in the way he consumes your thoughts.

Summary: You meet Connor at the bar. He's pleasantly surprised by the topic of conversation.

“You look nice.” 

You almost choke on your drink as you turn to look at the person whose voice those words belonged to. To your surprise, it was a rather gangly, awkward-looking man with slicked hair. You arched your brow at his clothes, a waistcoat over a tee. A tee, which, if you were right (and you were) possibly had some sort of comic graphic on it. 

“Thank you,” you reply, straw from your drink in the corner of your mouth. “You look… stylish.” 

The man grinned, and you noticed the fingerless gloves he was wearing to complete the look. 

“What’s your name, then?” The man asked, sliding onto the bar stool next to you. You swallowed your next sip and replied with your name, twisting to sit more comfortably to face him. You signalled the bartender down and ordered him a drink. 

“Oh- I think I was supposed to do that,” he said, looking a little concerned, hand gesturing towards the barman. “Name’s Connor. Temple. Connor Temple.” 

You chuckle, sipping through your straw. He was sweet, and charming, in an awkward kind of way. Just your type. He’d picked well for a clear first attempt at flirting with someone at the bar. 

“Well, there was only one of us without a drink and that was you. I’m not going to not order you a drink.” You quirk your brows cheekily, shrugging your cardigan off your shoulders and over the back of your stool. 

Connor takes his drink and has a swig, sucking air through his lips after he swallows as he tries to think of something to say. 

“Shit- I- I’m not sure what to do now. My friend didn’t help me past this point,” he says, and you’re not sure whether he’s talking to you or himself. He’s cute, though. You eye him appreciatively. 

“I know,” you say, putting your glass down and propping your chin up on your hand. “Who do you think would win in a fight- Wolverine or Spider-Man?” 

You think Connor might have just creamed his pants with the way he all but fist-pumped the air. He scoffed in disbelief and instantly became about a thousand per cent more comfortable by your calculations.

“No way- you did not-” he cuts himself off with an excited laugh. “Cool! Erm- definitely Wolverine. Thoughts?” 

You stick your lip out in thought, downing the rest of your drink and signalling for another. 

“See- I think Spider-Man. He can swing out of the line of fire, and Logan is all anger. Anger peters out- hah, that was unintentional, I swear.” 

“Spider-Man, really?” The expression on his face is excited but thoughtful as if he’s never really considered the possibility that Spider-Man could win in that fight. “My friend told me people at bars don’t like to talk comic books,” he added, tearing down another few swigs. 

“Well, I think your friend has vastly underestimated the surge of popularity in comics and video games. Really, it’s going to be the next big industry,” you reply, fiddling with your glass. 

“You know, I couldn’t agree more.” 

You rather think you’re going to get along well with Connor.
