Playing off the idea of "T4T" (trans seeking trans, typically associated with the terms found on the app Grindr) I wanted to compile a playlist of trans/nonbinary/gender non-conforming artists that are present in a variety of genres and gender expressions/presentations/labels.

Laura Les, part of the duo 100 gecs, is a trans woman previously known under her project Osno1 (I felt it personally prevalent to include her song “How to Dress as Human” but could only find the link through Youtube)

"Heartbreaker" by Ah-Mer-Ah-Su

In her 2018 album STAR, Ah-Mer-Ah-Su wanted to tell the story of her black trans identity--a story typically connected to struggle and coping with extreme opposition from society at large. “For me, this album simply means that I’m a black girl with something to say. I have a story, and I’ll tell it through my music.” (billboard, August 2018)

"HRT" by Girls Rituals

Devi McCallion has worked in a number of projects centered under her label blacksquares. Her trans identity is touched on in such projects as Cats Millionaire/Mom, blackdresses, and Girls Rituals.

Originally starting her glittery electronica sound under the name Tami Tamaki, Tami T describes many aspects around the love for/between trans femmes // “So fucking brave, so fucking femme”

"Nonbinary" by Arca

Alejandra Ghersi, better known by her stagename Arca, came out as nonbinary and goes by she/her and it/its pronouns.

"Bitch Pudding" by KC Ortiz

Rising in the Chicago hip-hop scene, KC Ortiz wants to be known that she is no different than any other rapper. “I cringe when headlines say ‘Trans Rapper.’ That ain’t me...The only times that even crosses my mind really is when I think about because I’m trans I gotta be dope.” (Art Music Fashion Life, June 2020)

"Faceshopping" by SOPHIE

Sophie Xeon made her breakthrough in Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides, becoming a known name after producing for artists like Charli XCX. She is very reclusive and has a smaller public image, contrary to her Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2020 appearance. (I have also discussed her imagery/lyricism of this song in 5th Avenue’s podcast--you should give it a listen to hear about other great queer artists!)

"Gotta Gimme Your Love" by Sateen

Sateen is the band formally made up of the lesbian power couple Miss Sateen and Exquisite. Originally famous and sensationalized as a “hetero drag couple,” Exquisite came out as a trans woman and shifted the projection of their music and relationship into making disco for a new generation.

"TRANSylvania" by Kim Petras

Known famously on German television for medically transitioning in her teens, Kim Petras’ assertation in her identity as a trans woman gave her much of the internet presence and platform to successfully kick off a music career. “I hate the idea of using my identity as a tool...It made me the person I am and that’s a big part of me, but I think music is about your feelings and your fantasies and it goes deeper than your gender or your sexuality.” (billboard, 2018)

"Breakdown" by Torraine Futurum

Making waves in the fashion industry before walking in New York Fashion Week, Torraine Futurum says she aims to “do whatever the fuck I want to do on this Earth -- and it’s going to be excellent.” (them., 2018)

"I Am America" by Shea Diamond

“I knew at a very young age I loved to sing. My voice was effeminate and I remember feeling afraid to sing in the church choir...Desperate to find the financial means to transition to my true gender, I committed a crime in 1999 and was sentenced to 10 years in a men’s prison. Teddy Geiger has known many lives in popular culture from teen idol, romantic lead, to sought after producer. “I didn’t know anyone who was trans...I had very little connection to that, so it wasn’t really until maybe three years ago I started actually painting my nails and going out. Nobody cared if I was femme.” (Rolling Stone, 2018)

"Genderqueer Love Song" by Schmekel

“Schmekel means little penis is Yiddish, and is a play on the fact that all four members were born female but ow identify themselves on the masculine side of the gender spectrum. It’s an appropriate name for a band that started as a laugh.” (New York Times, 2011)

"Queer Kidz" by Ashby and the Occeanns

Ashlynn Barker is a trans/nonbinary musician based out of Chicago. They write songs about trans issues, queer identity, mental health, and video games.

"Cis Girls" by Dyke Drama

Sadie Switchblade of the band G.L.O.S.S. (Girls Living Outside Society’s Shit) came out with this “transparent” side project. “It’s pretty transparent...The songs are either about trans girl problems or dykey lesbionic friendships.” (Pitchfork, 2016)

"Femme Bitch Top" by Tribe 8

“When the trans-dyke neofeminist rabble-rousers known as Tribe 8 make music, not even heaven is safe.” (SF Gate, 2006) The San Francisco LGBT Film Festival entry “Rise Above” is a rock-documentary anomaly I highly recommend taking the time to watch.

"True Trans Soul Rebel" by Against Me!

Laura Les came out with her release of the album Transgender Dysphoria Blues and furthered this message in Against Me!’s album Shape Shift with Me. She was one of the first trans people I saw openly continue to pursue a passion despite previously having works “pre-transition” out in the world.

A trans woman solo-acoustic based out of Virginia, Wargo’s sound is directly influenced by the punk scene of the east coast. She likes to call her style “Appalachian Power Pop.”

Coming to a place of internet recognition through such vines as “hahaha I do that” Nat Puff’s indie pop project Left at Londed (shorted as /@/) dives into the heart of “what it means to navigate the current political world as a queer person, while still remaining accessible to the general public.” (“About” on /@/ website)

"Body Was Made" by Ezra Furman

“My body was made this particular way // There’s really nothing any old patrician can say // You social police can just get out of my face // My body was made” (Body Was Made music video is a quirky and fun stylistic retelling of these lyrics) Ezra Furman identifies as trans and bisexual and uses he/him and she/her pronouns.

"Complicated" by The Cliks

Lucas Silveira shared that the band’s name derived from two ideas; using The like iconic bands The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and Cliks as a portmanteau of the slang terms clit and dicks. (In The Life interview, 2009)

"Upper West Side" by King Princess

“Although [Mikaela Mullaney Straus] identifies as a genderqueer lesbian, King Princess doesn’t necessarily want her music to be placed in the ‘queer pop’ box.” (MTV, 2019) Who isn’t bored of the heteronormative narrative?

"Extended Vacation" by Ryan Cassata

Ryan Cassata is the first openly transgender musician to perform at Warped, winning the Ernie Ball Battle of The Bands contest twice (both in 2013 and 2015*). He has spoken out about American Idol attempting to exploit openly transgender people to pander to a broader audience banking on new forms of media “diversity”. *I saw him in Mountain View, California in 2015 and you have no idea how happy a newly out genderqueer 16 year old was to stand on stage behind a proud trans man singing on a bumping stage.

JOSEPH’S ROUTE MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE. first of all, we get the nice message of ‘hey look, hes the confirmed bisexual of the series and HE CHEATS ON HIS WIFE. WE TRICKED YOU INTO THINKING HIS WIFE CHEATS ON HIM, BUT NO, IT IS HE, THE BISEXUAL’

so thats the first bad thing.

second bad thing, the whole cheating thing. cheating is wrong. we all know that, some freaks on this site dont, but im gonna assume they arent following me. but the thing is the player is led to believe that joseph finished his relationship with mary and thus he wants to enter a relationship with dadsona. a little bit too fast, a little bit too fairy-tale like but hey, its a dating sim, who am i to question some incredulous events happening in it? WRONG, says the joseph route writer. this is the REAL life and in REAL LIFE people dont just divorce sb to be with you, in real life, there are mlm cheaters who are going to use you and betray your trust and youre an idiot for believing you could have a happy ending with joseph. joseph is the only character in the game with whom u cannot have a happy ending, furthermore hes the only character You Don’t Really Get To Know. the only thing u know at the end of the game is that he puts on these various masks but when does he do that? why does he do that? its interesting, its compelling, u wanna know more about him but you cant and the game says ur a fucking idiot because u wanted to make a married man cheat (even tho at the moment of cheating u hear that their relationship is over).

even if u didnt want to cheat, i dont remember there being an option for saying ‘uhh okay but lets wait till the divorce is finalized’ so idk i guess u dont have a choice

third bad thing is my main gripe, something i already mentioned above. this is a dating sim that is completely unrealistic, its COMPLETLY escapist. what are the odds of moving into a cul de sac filled with mostly single and mostly gay dads. and all of them so beautiful and dare i say, quirky. chances are none. from the very beginning, this game is not realistic and it shouldnt strive to be realistic. none of dating sims are, theyre not meant to mirror real life. they are! escapist! and theres nothing wrong with that!!!! dream daddy is a perfect world where everybody is LGBT, theres no homophobia, no transphobia, everybody is perfectly accepting of one another, u never have to talk about your lgbt experience (which is a topic for another essay but i gotta pace myself), its all perfect!!!!

but all of the sudden, when u pick josephs route, you are supposed to go back to the real world. and in the real world, there are cheaters and lying men who are just looking for a quick fuck. and u just fell for those lies, u believed this religious blond bisexual man and he played u like a fiddle. and how could u not see that coming, asks the writer of that route. did u think u were playing an idealistic dating sim?? :thinking:

this clashes HARD with the rest of the game. im not saying dating sims should have no conflict at all, no of course not, conflict is welcome. robert’s route has a very good conflict in it, robert has some issues, ur dadsona helps him get his shit together. good conflict, well written, good resolution. but joseph has a conflict on which u as a player, have no influence over. u never get to discuss his marriage, not in a way that matters, u never get to propose a solution, ur never allowed to critically analyze whats happening.

ur final ending is decided for u, no matter what what u do. and in a dating sim........ thats just.... not how they work. your decisions are what makes the story unfold in certain ways, the agency should be yours. but joseph has no good ending because the writer decided to be realistic in the saddest way, the way that reminds you that bisexual people lie and cheat and that generally, lgbt relationships are built on sensationalized drama and pain

theres so many more things i could cover -- how mary is treated in that route, how religion factors into all of it, how family life influences the route, but ultimately, its all just........ a huge disappointment which feels extremely out of place in the DDADDS universe. nobody who buys this game expects harsh realism of doomed gay relationships. somebody might argue that this is what makes josephs route so interesting but i think thats ... fake, sensationalised interest. we could have the same conflict with robert and mary, already an ex-wife. but instead the writer has to get his ‘haha gotcha. this story cant have a happy ending because this is the real world’

I dont know if I misunderstood your intention with option 3 but I hope it was implying that they addressed it, admitted their feelings, and are keeping it private protected by the 'undefinable' story they devised long ago. Because that is an option. In fact, its the most likely one because it would justify all the unexplainable.

No, that was pretty much my intention :).

The Olympics was the skates of their lives. If I was going into the skates/competition of my life I wouldn’t personally want to go in with anything unaddressed. Why? bc that seems really risky esp. when your literal job is to be on the same page, understand what the other person is going to do next and to trust that person. They’re not stupid and they know how important open communication is to their success. That they have at the very least talked about it is my best guess.

I actually don’t know how other people want them to act bc they are acting exactly how I would expect them (not some generic people who liked to share these kinds of things) to act if they were, in fact, together. How else are they supposed to be?

They have a very specific storyline for how they want their career to be viewed (and have for quite some time now) and I don’t doubt that it is already somewhat disappointing that much of that has been overshadowed with the question of whether they are dating/together.

Their clear love for the sport and for their sport to be as welcoming and accepted and loved as a sport is evident. In ice dance, there is already this huge expectation of passion etc. that really HUGELY and unfairly works against sibling teams like the Shibs who have a connection — but one of an obviously different kind. VM have always exhibited the passion/love narrative on the ice but I wouldn’t use this to assume that that’s all they want to see from the sport. It really does have such potential in other forms that the GOATs revealing that they were a couple whilst winning everything wouldn’t help to nurture at the moment. (or, this sport is so ridiculously fking troubled that literally anything sends it back into the dark ages just give it time).

If we look at GG (the GOATs of pairs), then we also see that much of their prowess on the ice was overshadowed by their (admittedly amazing and beautiful and touching etc.) love story.

Instead of focussing on VM as skaters and the relationship that they have built of trust etc. which is the foundation that any other relationship (romantic or otherwise) would have to be built upon, they have also very often been sensationalized or simplified.

20+ years is a long ass time, so to have your whole career and connection boil down to “u datin?’” (because we really don’t live in a world that likes nuance, have you seen Tumblr???!)… I just don’t see how that wouldn’t hurt. AND to have answered that same question for 10+ years! GOOD LORD. I’m frankly surprised they haven’t decked a so-called ‘reporter’ yet. Because I would. Revealing themselves justifies the fact that those questions were even asked in the first place which is not something I think that they should do or that they would want to do, at least not until they have plausible deniability that they were together circa Feb. Then there’s the attention and expectations that come with being together in the modern age.

(And it also comes with the implications that everything has always been sunshine etc. which VM have been very clear is not the case.)

Summary of why not: not magnificent for the development of the sport, focus off of skating, focus off of work put in to trust etc., doesn’t allow for nuance in modern times, pseudo-justification that they were even asked in the first place, attention, expectations, and then a little point on the romanticisation of their hard work and implications that everything has always been sunshine and roses. I don’t even think that’s it is just one of these things. I believe that it is possibly many or all.

To finish, their relationship is so different from what so many people have and will see in their lives so I get that it might be hard to empathise with them when they say that they can’t/don’t want to name it but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try.

holly was born in cookeville, tennessee, and lived there up until she graduated. she grew up in the middle of five siblings, and was, notably, the bleeding heart of the group. her older siblings picked at her for being the crybaby, but her parents never did much in trying to help her grow thicker skin: they let her stay soft as long as she needed, trusting that one day she would come into her own. and, luckily enough, she did.

her parents kept this kind of approach to parenting their middle child. she appreciates them immensely, and knows how lucky she was to have parents that embraced her for who she was no matter what, and never pushed their own agendas onto her, but sometimes, she wishes they’d been a little more stern. because while they did manage to raise her into a compassionate and creative person this way, she got hard on herself, and for a while, she blamed them for it. holly has always been her own biggest critic, and a tougher one than any external influence in her life. she’s one of those kids that makes angry tweets about how the gifted and talented program fucks you up

when holly was 16, she was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. she was diagnosed at one of her lowest points, when the pressure of school and planning for the future had pushed her almost into a burnout. she still heralds her old therapist for all the good she did for her, and is a fierce advocate for communication and seeking that sort of treatment.

once she graduated, she moved to moved to carina and commuted to a nearby university. she always wanted to live by the ocean, and, sure, the commute was a bitch, but well worth it in her mind. she changed her major and minor about 294 times before settling on double majoring in english and french. she loves literature, but also, the art of translating, and the way that, depending on who’s translating, a text can take on a hundred

she moved in with a pair of roommates, allie and marilyn, and, like in any trinity, there were clear roles. she became a shoulder to cry on and someone to vent to when you got stood up on another tinder date. she embraced her role as pack mom.

tw death, implied suicide which is why, as if she didn’t feel cliche enough sometimes, she felt a little responsible for not noticing the signs that lead to allie’s death. she was the one allie vented to, the one who was supposed to pick up on if something was bothering her, or hurting her that bad. things became strained overtime between holly and marilyn as well, as they began to notice how the third piece of their puzzle may have been the glue that held it together all along.

after skidding past the finish line at graduation and taking some time to go home and be with her family, holly’s found herself back in carina. as much as she would love to escape the darker memories of the town, she was ultimately drawn back to the ocean she loves and the clear mind it gives her.

Its reasoning was based on collecting data that didn’t distinguish between transgender children & gender non-conforming children. The doctors who participated in the study used Conversion Therapy on the children, so the children would either go back into the closet or they would not return back to the “doctor” to tell them their conversion therapy didn’t work, both of which were counted as “successes” in detransitioning.

Basically if you’re just GNC or didn’t want to return to a doctor who tortured you or the torture scared you & made you hate yourself all of those contributed to the 80% of detransitions (which according to the myth implies healthy & happy too).

I believe the fact that 1 in 5 people Still reported being transgender, after all of that fraud, is a testament of how persistent transgender identity is.

That being said though, according to those polls, we still got a bunch of work to do for this community.

Now, you could be gender non-conforming or questioning like not trusting gender essentialist crap regardless of whether you’re transgender or not, but yeah, if those labels don’t seem to cover it then yes you are trans.

Like for example, a reason why I know I’m trans is because when I hear stuff about gender-neutral bathrooms existing or gender-neutral treatments of young children in places like daycares & such, or people being finally allowed to embrace their gender identity I’m like grieving & like “thank you”, I get sniffly, I want to cry, I ask the universe “¡where the hell was that for me?” [1]… It’s not just excitement about progress in gender equality or what have you; it’s like cutting to my core & such.

I am Not saying that my experience is required, but I wanted to let you know my experience because I know it can be hard to take on labels without knowing people who do.

I want to add something to your Akechi meta but the problem is I don't know how to word it because so many people react as if he's a real dude and even you feel you have to add disclaimers when talking about fictional context because then people will say you're dumb enough to not know murder is bad (lmao). its frustrating because I want to discuss the themes and writing of him. 1/

2/ I have issues with the ultimate message of his character and don’t want to be accused of things if I say I dont agree with the redemption equals death message. That does have to do with how victims of abuse who react like him are often written in fiction, and viewed and talked about as worse than just pure evil characters, but there’s no way to word it that won’t get people jumping. I want a way to discuss it from a writing theme perspective instead of acting like a real person is on trial yk

hello!! yeah, i’ve my own problems with the narrative of the character that i haven’t talked about on here before, particularly the way he & his whole situation is treated by the narrative. my main problem is that all of his issues come down to the fact that he didn’t know how to steal hearts bc he didn’t have a talking cat around to tell him how, and how he was set up on a bad path from the start isn’t really brought up in a satisfactory manner? a friend of mine described it at giving him a fork and then the narrative yelling at him for not eating with a spoon, which i liked a lot.

i’ve said similar things before, but, there’s a serious realness of his personal situation and his upbringing vs the highly sensationalized fantasy circumstances of his crimes and the game’s setting. yes, i am fully aware murder is bad, i know he did things wrong, the fact he did it at all disqualifies from innocence. yes, i believe he should deal with the fallout of his actions. but, context in a fantasy setting is important, why else would it be given to you?

it feels ridiculous i need the disclaimer at all, but, i don’t wanna be accused of coddling him when i’m just trying to clear up misunderstandings about him. he’s a complex character, and reducing him to one or the other is such a waste.

his narrative is disappointing to me, personally, if his “death” isn’t the bridge to something more. i fundamentally do not trust offscreen deaths and expect him to be back in some spinoff or another, but, only time will tell.

[Idea] #MediainIndia #ethicaljournalism There is an outcry against the way the media has been covering certain incidents in our society. Be it the death of a celebrity, or the recent premature attacks on an individual and club, it somehow feels like the media fraternity isn't holding its standards as high as it should be, doesnt it? That said i know of several journalists, people whom i am proud to call friends who slog day in and day out and try to make a difference just as you and I do. A few years ago there was an issue that popped up. Bloggers would run stories backed by zero research and it started to create a vicious negative cycle, with lots of vitriol all around. The O'Reily group proposed a code of ethics be taken by bloggers of influence that would set a standard. Several publishing houses ran that code of conduct, that eventually it helped the blogging world to mature (by enlarge). Ive overheard some folks talk about a civil suit against media houses - but i dont believe it is the right approach. Media houses today also impose a lot of restrictions on journalists in the name of running a business. What i would suggest is perhaps revisiting the same solution. Id propose putting together a manifesto for ethical journalists that the journalist themselves collaboratively put together - and once arrived at a consensus, for the journalism fraternity to sign their names underneath it - and become guardians to uphold their sacred profession in a Democratic state, to the best of their abilities - even if it is to go up against the media houses they work for. What we as the public can do is make a list of media houses and track the ones that have ethical journalists on their teams and vote with our wallets and attention. Shun those who use the power of the free press towards sensationalism and support those who embrace facts (even if it takes a little while to confirm it, and not "break things for the sake of breaking"). In a magical way, it could save the media industry, restore our trust with the media and fix the issue of fake news - all in one go. If you think this makes sense, share.

Any examples? I hear this said but in context his videos have always seemed equally damning. Taking down ACORN put a target on his back during an adminstration known for prosecuting joirnalists and political enemies so saying “zomg community service” doesn’t cut it for me.

Any examples? How about the one you named yourself. O’Keefe had to pay out $100,000 to one of the former ACORN employees after he handed over the entire unedited videos which the California AG reviewed and found, “no evidence of criminal conduct on the part of ACORN employees nor any evidence that any employee intended to aid or abet criminal conduct.”

He even admitted in that case that he was just trying to damage ACORN and wasn’t acting with any sort of journalistic objectivity.

His entire career is like that. He releases “damning” video evidence which when compared to the raw video prove to be heavily edited segments which misrepresent the stated views of the people he films by removing context or chronologically shifting the video to make it appear bad.

By comparison, O’Keefe makes media outlets like CNN and Fox with their horribly biased and non-journalistic practices look like absolute angels.

You’re acting like the one good employee ACORN had absolves the other horrible employees who willingly helped a supposed pimp who was prostituting out underage girls and never sought help from a child advocacy group let alone the police after the meeting. You’re doing some subterfuge yourself. If O’Keefe’s undercover vids on ACORN encouraged a reform and improved protocol on how employees react to pimps and who they should contact after, then it was worth it bc, apparently, most of the employees don’t have an idea of what is right or wrong, including when it involves pedophilia.

No wrongdoing was found to have occurred by ACORN when the full video came out. That was the findings of the California AG office and the federal Government Accountability Office.

Well, half true. The case in California was a terrible case and Okeefe should be ashamed for not following through on what the workers did after he left. But the Brooklyn DA reviewed the tapes that affected their region and found that although they were heavily edited, the most damning words were still very much in context.

There was 100% wrong doing found at ACORN. You’re a liar. There was no criminal wrong doing. As being an unethical asshole is not against the law. One of the employees caught on tape had gone to the police and had been leading on O’Keefe. There was no way for O’Keefe to know that; the rest of the employees did not. That employee sued him as they lost their job and were doing the right thing.

Which means the rest of them were actively giving advice for criminal conduct and had no intention of reporting it to the police.

Not really, the msm just do to okeefe what they did to center of medical progress. Throw around ‘deceptive edit’ and dont back it up when the full tapes are released.

What part is fake?

It’s a project veritas release. The people who keep getting busted for releasing edited and out of context videos. The odds of this being legit are approaching zero. Basically, nothing this guy releases is true. He literally generates the fake for fake news.

I’m sure I’m the minority opinion here but project veritas has a history of editing video. I don’t think we should look too much into what they do until they release raw footage. When it cuts to the background images for the “because it’s ratings” part it sounds very different than the preceding lines. CNN does suck 99% of the time but that doesn’t mean any attack against it is credible.

All videos are edited. Every single one. This ‘deceptive edit’ crap falls apart when the full vidoes are released showing it in the same context.

Ok then let’s wait until the full video is released before making concrete judgments.

So, politics aside. People stopped paying for real reporting and news. Combine the lack of interest in actual reporting, and the media mergers and newspaper buyouts, etc and you get this media environment. It rewards shock headlines and ‘fake news,’ because no one wanted to purchase journalism and even if they did, public trading of news companies means cost cutting and share holder profits are more important than news…. so what?

And NPR ain’t great, because government funding for it got cut years ago and the replacement ‘funding from ‘charitable foundations for agenda reporting,’ and listener donations sucks. So decent reporters bounce out of NPR ASAP and American suffers.

But this isn’t anything new. Sensationalist news has been a part of the human experience for centuries.

Media mongrel Hearst from the early 20th century made his fortune off of fake news. It was common in the 19th and early 20th century. Some what died down in the mid 20th century; and became dominant again at the end of the 20th century.

we have only one model that doesn’t get fucked by this and it is NPR.

NPR has a horrible liberal bias. They’ll pick a topic like ‘The benefits of abortion’ and then discuss the topic in a somewhat fair manner. But the bias was built into the topic and no amount of honest discussion can overcome that, especially when 90% of the people talking are liberals.

I really like this response, because I agree, but not exactly in the same way. Your response illustrates a particular problem: You think NPR has a liberal bias, because you are to the right of it. I think NPR has a centrist bias, because I’m to the left of it. Either way, we both think NPR doesn’t represent our views fairly and doesn’t ask questions in an objective way.

NPR leans left; though not as much as CNN. If you were going to give it a scale of -10 to 10 (positive 10 being extreme conservative):

MSNBC: -8

CNN: -4

NPR: -2/-3

Fox: 4

So if you’re a typical reader of Salon or viewer of MSNBC and you have been duped into thinking you’re somewhat moderate; than you may think NPR is “towards” the center. But there is no doubt that it leans left.

Business Insider did a piece of news source bias a few years back. NPR is, as per their research, not close to centrist but leftist .

This is cool link, however it does not say what you say it does, it says the ‘Audience of NPR is more liberal.’ It makes no conclusions about the content.

As a regular NPR listener, I can assure you that they spend a wildly disproportionate amount of time pushing issues that are only important to a tiny minority of the population (surprise: that would be a varied number of far-left activist groups that send them press releases on the topic). In the particular example I’m thinking of, the cause represents something like 10% of a 5-10% minority in the U.S. I hear the same “news” and “personal interest” stories promoting that issue literally every day. The only things that ever change are the names of the people involved (and maybe one or two minor details). It’s the exact same political narrative, hammered over and over and over again. It is literally no longer newsworthy, yet I still hear it in their “news” coverage every day.

The thing is, I’m sure that NPR doesn’t even realize how disproportionately they’re covering the topic. It’s of particular interest to them and most of their audience because it reinforces their preexisting worldview biases…and the issue has been weaponized and is now being used to attack anyone on the “other” side of that issue.

The thing is that they make no bones about it being liberal, and they are at least good at disclosure. You hear how liberal they are every 15 minutes when the call out supporters.

They also have conservative guests on all the time. Congressmen, PR staff from think-tanks, candidates and staff. They come off as smart, engaged people just looking to make things better. Sure, most of the audience and all the staff think they’re wrong. But it’s opposition, not smears

If you just want to know what’s going on in the world, you could do a whole lot worse.

I stopped listening to NPR during the 2012 election. They would have a “panel” about a political topic. The Moderator would be a hard core democrat. Then he would have 3 panelists on. One who was extremely far left (socialist), one who was a hard core Democrat, and one who was moderate (who they called a Republican). The “Republican” threw Romney and Republicans under the bus on every topic and talked about how Republicans were extreme (the guy supposedly representing Right).

That panel would have been horrible enough had they had a real conservative on there who actually believed in Republican policies (as he would be out numbered 3:1); but the fact that they put up a strawman of a Republican on just so he could provide legitimacy to the program was down right infuriating. Fuck that network.

Thank you for being a voice of reason. The real shock of this video should be the realization that all our media is like this, not just CNN.

I may not agree with most of y’all on a lot of issues, but I do agree that there are loads of issues plagueing(sp?) this country. Media and journalism being pretty damn high up there. Especially the fact that it is a driving force if the polarization and partisanship of politics we have today.

I am a big fan of government funded stuff like NPR/PBS/etc, but the thing I am worried about just as you are is how can this be funded by the [insert political party] without them having undue influence over content and context that is out out…it’s a tough question with a probably even tougher solution.

Every group will deny and try to fight news and reporting that makes them look bad. It’s PR, I get it, but when that party is directly responsible for the funding of said programming, how can one prevent retaliation when they report on the actions (good or bad) of that party.

If liberals can post salon and mother jones articles 24/7 on r/politics, they’ll probably believe whatever CNN told them anyway.

My new favorite is holding the independent up as some holy bastion of new reporting. Its little more than a tabloid

Consensus and time.

Most of the time, most of the news from all these different “partisan” outlets is actually identical. There’s not much difference in the handling of facts, only the angle or the narrative. So when you’re looking up a story that actually matters, read the same story from 8 different, competing, clashing outlets so that forming a narrative is impossible.

News outlets are dishonest, but they don’t usually fabricate. Their spin is more like a reality TV show being edited, inserting context, or removing relevant facts. Reading all the different edits at the same time quickly reveals what is craft, and what is real. Once you do that, you have the facts.

The news brings you the facts because that’s what you ask for. But that’s not really what people want. Their business model is about offering clarity, interpreting the facts into understandable storylines. They take a complicated, crowded, confusing world, and make it nice and neat. Demand is created for a product that has nothing to do with facts. If the news industry was a gas station, facts would be the gasoline, and narrative would be the snacks and drinks.

“The news” is an entertainment product. News junkies are not informed people, they are just entertainment addicts. If you want to be informed, you have to think like a journalist, not an addict.

I only trust news that doesn’t use click bait titles, doesn’t use dramatic language, and moves on to something else once the segment is over. That pretty much leaves pbs.

The current media situation is a direct result of the elimination of the fairness doctrine by Reagan, and especially the Telecommunications act of 1996 courtesy of Clinton. It’s astoundingly difficult to get a straight true version of almost any news event these days.

With the internet and the democratization of information, it is not that difficult to get actual hard facts and even read spin from all sides and form your own opinion.

I think most people are just either lazy, don’t care, or want to read something from their perspective. With your take, it seems the only logical solution would be some state intervention or some new law, which would not be good.

That is a lot of trust in people. Most people just use the internet to find the “facts” to back their pre-conceived belief and stop there.

I sort of disagree about the internet part. I think the internet contributes to the problem because it allows people with zero critical thinking skills access to reams of truly fake news that they aren’t equipped to deal with. I recall a few months ago my Facebook feed lit up with stories posted by my more conservative friends and relatives about how Clinton was under indictment, and had fled the country in a private jet with the FBI hot on her heels. Then there was the whole pizzagate thing that ended with a guy barging into a pizza restaurant with a gun looking for a nonexistent basement full of pedophilia victims. I don’t know what the solution to all this is because regulating the internet in any way that would alleviate the problem would have massive negative consequences, and would most likely be unconstitutional to boot.

I just completely disagree, and believe you, and others, are blowing it out of proportion. One, I understand many people get their “news” from facebook, but it is not a news source. Rarely are people actually reading the articles posted, just the headlines and others’ opinions and then arguing in the comment section. It is more of an activity than just getting the news.

That guy who went to the pizza parlor clearly was crazy and has some other issues, and was he motivated or spurred by this small fringe conspiracy community? Yes, probably, but again, it was very, very small. I am more concerned about main stream news outlets and the left openly saying the GOP is going to kill people and all republicans are Nazis, which is all accepted and mainstream, and if true, I mean somewhat justifies violence, if they are all Nazis and going to kill people?

So, you speak of trying to find a solution to something that is not really a problem. That is just what scares me, the left and right do that all the time. Err on the side of not making laws or regulations or “solutions”, freedom and the market takes care of it. The internet is much more of solution than contributing to a small problem. That form of thinking, even from a conservative point of view, only leads down the road to regulation and control, and less freedom.

I’d agree with you if I didn’t see people I regarded as reasonable and intelligent falling for this crap on a daily basis. I’ll also reiterate that I’m in no way advocating for more internet regulation, but I don’t buy the free market will fix things argument either. The free market follows profits, and telling people what they want to hear will always be more profitable, than telling simple truth.

Yes, the internet gives critical-thinkers the power to consume a ton of reports and form their own opinions, but most people aren’t doing this. Most people don’t use the internet for investigative or comparative journalism. Most people get their “news” from their television or radio broadcast of choice.

We don’t need new laws to regulate what can and cannot be reported. We don’t need a government agency picking winners and losers by controlling funding or airtime. We need some goddamn leadership. We need a president or other high-visibility leader who can be trusted, who has proven integrity, and who communicates with “both sides” to speak to the importance of holding journalists and media networks accountable.

We need the press to keep the government in check, but we need to keep the press in check. “We”, on average, don’t give a shit, so it’s hard to see this starting with us. The corporate click-bait press isn’t likely to usher a true leader into the White House, and the people there now sure as hell aren’t going to change their tune to their own detriment, so I don’t know how we get here. Sad.

This same video was posted there, and rather than be concerned about a CNN producer laughing at the idea of ‘ethics’ in their reporting, they instead claim that Okeefe only makes fake news. PP does actually sell fetal organs though… totaling on avg. $2-3k for all the organs sold in 1 fetus. This is not some conspiracy theory either. There are published receipts and invoices from organ/tissue repository companies ordering these fetal organs directly from PP to then sell to biotech or academic centers.

While I must admit I am generally liberal, even I have to say all the Trump-Russia collusion stories are getting old to see. Do I think some of the things that are reported, and some of Trump’s own actions and statements seem a little sketchy? Sure. But ultimately, that’s why there is currently some sort of investigation going on. I don’t need to hear about it every day because at this point there really isn’t too much more to report, and to be honest it just takes away from actually debating the policies that are being put out, especially health care currently. If something comes up in the future from this investigation or otherwise, sure let’s bring it up again and discuss it, but unless/until something like that occurs I would rather see more talk about policies.
