What if Niall never went Solo. What if he continued with Songwriting, but not using the songs for himself. What do you think, of all the flicker songs, if he sold them, who would sing them now? Would you have an artist in mind for each of his songs?
OHH, THIS IS SUCH A COOL QUESTION? i’m gonna give it my best shot but if anybody else wants to jump in, i’d love to hear what y’all come up with!
(i decided to mostly go with younger artists for these answers just as a means of simplifying how to decide for my own sake, but that’s no hard rule! i also tended to favor artists that i thought would adopt songs without co-writing on them, but sometimes i made exceptions to that ~rule too!)
on the loose: haim. u KNOW i had to lmao; they’re so good at capturing a similar 80s-inspired rock sound, and i think ‘otl’ with their particular harmonies and clashing percussion would be a treat, not to mention how hard stevie nicks they’d make the lyrics
the tide: catfish and the bottlemen. i went with the obvious choice here tbh; ‘the tide’ sounds like u2 to me, and do catb, so i think they’d be a great, natural fit! on top of that though i think their guitarist does a great job (though he’s no edge lmao), and they could get enough momentum going to get this song aloft, the way it should be. i just don’t want to get so far away from the origins of this song to change its integrity!
this town: vance joy would be my top pick for this song particularly in light of his second album! his penchant for detailed lyrics makes him a natural fit, but i love his vocals, too; if anything, i think niall could vary his voice a little bit more in this song, so if vance would that’d be sick!
paper houses: jade bird would sound amazing on this song. she can hold that note that always makes niall sound like a disney prince to me, and the stuff she sings about anyhow is so preoccupied with deceptive exteriors. and her voice is just gorgeous.
you and me: hudson taylor, another obvious choice!! i think the lyrics are so earnest, though, you’d have a hard time applying them to a band who wouldn’t sing them in a similar way, but i would love to hear the guys harmonize on the verses, and in a different key, i think the song would have a little more mobility, as well!
seeing blind: i’m actually gonna go out on a limb a little bit and slot wild youth in here, rather than for mirrors, which i think they’d also be a great fit for! but i think they could modernize seeing blind even further and electrify the guitar without losing the integrity of the lyrics!
too much to ask: demi lovato, maybe?? i think she’d definitely ramp up the vocals; she tends to belt her lyrics out, and i love the idea of ‘tmta’ gaining that kind of force!
flicker: the academic!! they’re niall’s friends, but i love the way the singer’s voice strikes like a blunt knife, and the way he makes vulnerability sound brazen! not to mention how hard the guitar goes in their songs
so long: sigrid would sound really cool on this song, and it has that big, clashing buildup to the chorus, which her songs haven’t really done yet, but i looove her drums!
since we’re alone: i think troye’s version of this song would be excellent, but it’d also have to be suuper different; that simple guitar part would have to be totally upscaled and run through a synthesizer, but he’s got the emotion in his voice for it for sure, and u can’t say that for everyone!
fire away: i know people don’t go hard for this song but i lOVE it, and i would love the lumineers take it on! they do something cool with the ambient space at the back of their songs that i’d love to hear on ‘fire away;’ they sound like metallic notes to me, almost, and the sadness in the lead singer’s voice would mesh well with this tune
mirrors: i would love to hear a woman sing this song, and in particular lorde. she can obviously sing like a bird but there’s a massive disconnect for me between the lyrics of her verses and her choruses, so i’d love that third-person removal from the song to mirror the way the lyrics are a little more direct; things make more sense when you’re not in the middle of them, etc. but also bc it’d be wonderful to hear a woman sing that song, esp. w a jack antonoff-style synth-pop production.
slow hands: it’s REALLY hard to think of someone who could land the ‘like sweaty dripping down our dirty laundry’ lyric without sounding totally lecherous a;lkdfj so actually rather than ‘selling’ this particular song, i think it’d be neat for someone in hip-hop like chance to sample it and layer it into their own production!
on my own: ok, this could go one of two ways: u could pick another irish artist who’d make it sound similar, or u could go totally off the wall, and since i can’t think of any other irish bands i’d want on it (ciaran lavery would be good but i am actually not sure he has the vocals to land it), i’m just gonna go with my favorite fun band, hippo campus. those guys fuckin JAM, which is all i really want from omo lmao
